Economic, societal and environmental impacts of these phenomena are major. The articles in this issue, coming from the contributions to the Forum of Young Researchers, organized by the "Biodeterioration of Materials" Committee of CEFRACOR, represent a significant sample of the research carried out in France in different topics related to the microorganisms-materials interactions.; Les interactions entre les microorganismes et les matériaux de construction dans leur environne-ment influencent la durabilité des ouvrages, la santé et le confort dans les bâtiments ainsi que les qualités esthétiques des ouvrages. Les impacts économiques, sociétaux et environnementaux de ces phénomènes sont majeurs. Les articles présentés dans ce numéro, issus des contributions au Forum Jeunes Chercheurs, organisé par la Commission Biodétérioration des Matériaux du CEFRACOR, montrent unéchantillon significatif des recherches réalisées en France dans les différentes thématiques relatives aux interactions microorganismes-matériaux.

http://dx.doi.org/10.1051/mattech/2015016; International audience; Abstract – Effect of the chemical composition of fresh concrete pore solutions on the passiva-tion of mild steel. The passivity of reinforcing steel in concrete is generally attributed to the formation of a protective oxide layer on the steel surface due to the high alkalinity of the surrounding pore solution. The objective of this work was to study the influence of the chemical composition of fresh concrete pore solutions on the electrochemical behaviour and the surface chemical composition of C15 mild steel , used for reinforcement of building concrete. For that purpose , electrochemical measurements were performed at pH 13 in various simulated concrete pore solutions (CEM I , II and III) , as well as in the 0. 1 M NaOH reference solution , and were combined to surface analysis by XPS. The anodic polarization curves show the importance of steady-state measurements. The electrochemical impedance diagrams , plotted at the corrosion potential and at anodic potentials , show the presence of a protective passive layer on the steel surface with a thickness of about 2. 5 – 3 nm , in good agreement with XPS results. The pH is not the only determining parameter for predicting the corrosion behaviour of steel in concrete environments. Thus , the steady-state passive current density increases and the oxide layer becomes less protective with increasing sulfate concentration in solution. Furthermore , the strong protective nature of the passive layer in CEM III solution could be correlated to the presence of Fe 2+ on the steel surface .; – L ' alcalinité de la solution interstitielle contenue dans les pores du béton engendre la formation d ' une couche d ' oxyde protectricè a la surface des armatures métalliques. L ' objectif de ce travail est d ' ´ evaluer l ' influence de la composition chimique de la solution interstitielle de bétons jeunes sur la qualité du film d ' oxyde formé sur un acier doux C15. Pour ce faire , des mesures electrochimiques sont réalisées a pH 13 , dans différentes solutions interstitielles synthétiques (CEM I , II et III) , ainsi que dans une solution de référence NaOH 0 , 1 M et sont combinées a des analyses de surface par XPS. Les courbes de polarisation anodiques montrent l ' intérêt des mesures stationnaires. Les diagrammes d ' impédancé electrochimique , tracés au potentiel de corrosion et a potentiels anodiques , mettent en evidence la présence d ' une couche passive protectrice sur la surface d ' acier , dont l ' ´ epaisseur est de l ' ordre de 2 , 5 ` a 3 nm , en bon accord avec celle estimée par XPS. Le pH n ' est pas le seul param etre déterminant pour prédire le comportement a la corrosion de l ' acier. Ainsi , plus la concentration en sulfate en solution est importante , plus la densité de courant passif stationnaire est elevée et moins la solution est passivante. Par ailleurs , la présence de Fe 2+ a la surface du matériau pourrait en partie expliquer le fort pouvoir passivant de la solution CEM III.

http://www.mattech-journal.org; International audience; The electroless nickel plating on a conductive or insulating substrate is a widely used technique in various industries. The different deposition processes are relatively complex, and depend on several factors such as pH, temperature, composition of nickel baths and nature of the substrate. This review presents the effect of these parameters on the quality of the nickel deposit. Then, it focuses on the nickel electroless plating of plastics, and details the different stages of pre-treatment of this kind of material. During the different steps, toxic chemical products such as sulfochromic acid have always been used. To replace such products, environmentally friendly processes have been developed. Recent work on this topic as well as the effectiveness of the proposed methods are discussed at the end of this review.; Le dépôt chimique de nickel sur un substrat conducteur ou isolant est une technique très utilisée dans diverses activités industrielles. Les différents procédés de dépôt sont relativement complexes et dépendent de plusieurs facteurs tels que le pH, la température, la composition des bains de nickelage et la nature du substrat. Cette synthèse bibliographique présente les effets de ces paramètres sur la qualité du dépôt de nickel chimique. Elle met ensuite l’accent sur le nickelage chimique des matières plastiques et détaille les différentes étapes de pré-traitement de ce type de matériau. Au cours des différentes étapes, des produits toxiques tels que l’acide sulfochromique sont toujours utilisés. Afin de remplacer ces produits et répondre aux contraintes environnementales, plusieurs procédés respectueux de l’environnement ont éteé´laborés. Les derniers travaux sur ce thème ainsi que l’efficacité des méthodes proposées sont discutés en fin de revue.

Biofouling refers to the accumulation of organisms and their products onto surfaces immersed in a biological aqueous environment. It includes molecular-, micro- and macro-fouling. Molecular fouling is the initial step of biofouling, in which a conditioning film is formed by adsorption of organic biomolecules. Furthermore, surface-associated aggregates of microorganisms with their extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are called biofilm, known to provoke the biocorrosion of metals. Chlorination is still the most common treatment to control biofouling of cooling condensers fed with fresh- or seawater in power plants, provoking harmful effects to the aquatic environment. An environmental-friendly way to replace chlorination is thus highly desired. The aim of this thesis is to design a renewable poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based coating on metals (Ti, stainless steel and Al brass) used in cooling condensers, with a view to reduce biofouling. Adsorption of a PEO-poly(propylene oxide)-PEO copolymer was performed on native and hydrophobized metal surfaces. Three proteins (albumin, fibrinogen, cytochrome C) and Pseudomonas 2021, a marine bacterium, were used as model molecular- and micro-fouling agents, respectively. The results show that the adsorbed triblock copolymer prevents protein adsorption and significantly reduces bacterial adhesion on hydrophobized metal substrates, but not on native ones. The copolymer conformation plays a key role in biofouling reduction; it is believed to form a brush structure on hydrophobized substrates. In addition, proteins were highlighted as an important constituent of EPS and their conditioning films, as analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
