1. Experimental study of the effect of limestone grading on some mechanical properties of concrete

Abstract

This study reports the experimental work undertaken to investigate the optimum grading of limestone to be used in concrete mixes. 36 concrete cubes were prepared for testing. Four different Fineness Moduli and grading were tested 2.4, 2.6, 2.92 and 3. For all tests, the cubes were left in curing until testing at the age of 3, 7 and 28 days respectively. Samples were loaded to failure and the average compressive strength was used for comparison purposes. Flow table test has been performed on the fresh concrete directly after mixing to measure workability and the average of the maximum concrete spread parallel to the two edges of the table was recorded. Results revealed that the optimum Fineness Modulus for the limestone to be used as fine aggregate in the concrete mix to get maximum compressive strength is 2.78. The flow table tests revealed an increment in the workability of fresh concrete with higher Fineness Modulus of limestone used in the concrete mix as fine aggregate. The workability of the optimum Fineness Modulus, 2.78, was found to be 412 mm which is a mix with considerable workability. An ideal grading has been recommended in this research study and checked to match the ASTM grading requirements for fine aggregate.

Abstract

The Visual Analysis System (VAS) was developed to couple emerging successes in data mining with information visualization techniques in order to create a richly interactive environment for information retrieval from the World Wide Web. VAS's retrieval strategy operates by first using a conventional search engine to form a core set of retrieved documents. This core set is expanded by crawling from links in these documents to form a much larger set. The link topology of the larger set is then examined using data mining techniques to identify pages likely to be both relevant to the query and reliable as sources of information. Information visualization techniques are used to display the filtered set in a form amenable to the use of perceptual processes to filter and guide further user directed search. 19. The acid tolerance response of enteropathogenic Salmonella and Escherichia coli strains : a proteomic characterisation and novel links with motility and virulence

Abstract

This thesis concentrates on elucidating the mechanisms involved in the adaptation of exponentially growing EPEC and Salmonellai to inorganic and weak organic acids. An understanding of these mechanisms, collectively known as the acid tolerance response (ATR) is of relevance to both the food production and medicinal industries. One of the most striking findings is that flagellin, the major structural component of the bacterial flagellum, is down-regulated at pH 3.0 in acid adapted Salmonella. Further studies using reporter gene fusions indicate that the entire flagellar apparatus is transcriptionally repressed under these conditions. PhoPQ is found to mediate this mechanism, which results in a loss of cell motility, by acting directly or indirectly at the level of the flagellar fhCD master operon. One of the most striking findings is that flagellin, the major structural component of the bacterial flagellum, is down-regulated at pH 3.0 in acid adapted Salmonella. Further studies using reporter gene fusions indicate that the entire flagellar apparatus is transcriptionally repressed under these conditions. PhoPQ is found to mediate this mechanism, which results in a loss of cell motility, by acting directly or indirectly at the level of the flagellar flhCD master operon. Additional links between other virulence associated mechanisms and the ATR are also investigated. 2 ATR proteins regulated by PhoPQ are expressed similarly during the oxidative stress response. Correspondingly, survival assays indicate that an acid induced cross protection of oxidative stress in Salmonella is mediated by this global regulator. A further two regulators of pathogenesis (the BipA GTPase and the EAF plasmid) are characterised as negative regulators of the ATR in certain EPEC strains. It is concluded that ATR mechanisms are variable between different species and strains. Based on these results, it is proposed that intimate connections exist between the regulation of the ATR and virulence associated processes, such as motility, that are essential for pathogenesis. The full elucidation of the mechanisms behind the regulation and implementation of these systems may pave the way for future treatments of food-borne disease. The global regulatory molecules involved constitute putative drug targets.

42. Towards a Blueprint for a Music Centred Feature Film

Abstract

This research examines how insights drawn from the domain of film can provide provocation for creativity in the praxis of a musically inclined screenwriter-director. Through a research-based approach, a framework was sought to underpin the writing of a screenplay for a music-centred feature film. An extensive survey of films led to the fashioning of the Integrated Montage Interface - a digital tool for the process of script development. Nova emerged as an original screenplay, in which the exploration of narrative threads called for a more holistic praxis. Narrative directions were interrogated and refined to reflect the creative development within the discrete phases of filmmaking. Scaffolded by the unique perspective of the Integrated Montage Interface, a new multi-modal impetus was given voice within the work, engendering nuanced storytelling. Combinatory possibilities established a blueprint for a fully-fledged feature film production in emotional relief, where momentary tensions are mapped to multi-modal phrasing across audio, dialogue and visual strands. In purposed irony, the Nova-project’s protagonist mirrors the thesis - both being liberated by a fundamental reliance on synaesthesia found so readily in the cinematic experience and so crucially in Nova’s.

Abstract

The partial reduction of the xenon(II) salt XeF(super 1+)Sb2F11(super 1-) with antimony pentafluoride as the reaction medium generated the green product which has been identified as Xe2(super 1+)Sb2F11(super 1-).XeF(super 1+)Sb2F11(super 1-). This product was found to be long-lived at room temperature. Spectroscopic properties implied that the Xe2+ species is responsible for the ESR, UV-visible and Raman spectra. Moreover, antimony pentafluoride acts as the source of the Sb2F11(super 1-) anion associated with the Xe2+ anion.

The San Diego Suicide Study involved psychological autopsy and toxicological examination of 283 suicides. Of the 133 consecutive cases under age 30, 14 were under age 20. In this paper, detailed data on the 14 adolescent cases are presented and the findings compared to other studies.
