Abstract

The starch metabolic network was investigated in relation to other metabolic processes by examining a mutant with altered single-gene expression of ATP citrate lyase (ACL), an enzyme responsible for generating cytosolic acetyl-CoA pool from citrate. Previous research has shown that transgenic antisense plants with reduced ACL activity accumulate abnormally enlarged starch granules. In this study, we explored the underlying molecular mechanisms linking cytosolic acetyl-CoA generation and starch metabolism under short-day photoperiods. We performed transcriptome and quantification of starch accumulation in the leaves of wild-type and antisense seedlings with reduced ACL activity. The antisense-ACLA mutant accumulated more starch than the wild type under short-day conditions. Zymogram analyses were conducted to compare the activities of starch-metabolizing enzymes with transcriptomic changes in the seedling. Differential expression between wild-type and antisense-ACLA plants was detected in genes implicated in starch and acetyl-CoA metabolism, and cell wall metabolism. These analyses revealed a strong correlation between the transcript levels of genes responsible for starch synthesis and degradation, reflecting coordinated regulation at the transcriptomic level. 5. Development of a Policies, Procedures, and Reference Manual for Visual Arts Teachers.

Abstract

This report chronicles the development of a written compendium of commonly used policies, procedures, and references for use by the visual arts teachers of a fine and performing arts department in a large county-wide school district. The compendium was researched, written, and correlated with shared vision, mission, and purpose statements that evolved through consensus of the target group. The discrepancy addressed by this project was identified through a needs assessment survey of the target group shortly after the writer assumed the role of coordinator of the newly restructured department. The creation of these products increased the efficiency of the department office by diminishing telephone calls over routine matters, and increased teacher empowerment and effectiveness by providing the target group with previously inaccessible information. Furthermore, by employing participative input and target group consensus, significant ownership and bonding took place. The success of this project was measured by a comparison of pre- and post-implementation survey results, a comparison of pre- and post-implementation telephone logs, and the production of completed vision, mission, and purpose statements that are included in the appendices. Abstract

This thesis puts forward a formal theory of levels and algorithms to provide a foundation for those terms as they are used in much of cognitive science and computer science. Abstraction with respect to concreteness is distinguished from abstraction with respect to detail, resulting in three levels of concreteness and a large number of algorithmic levels, which are levels of detail and the primary focus of the theory. An algorithm or ideal machine is a set of sequences of states defining a particular level of detail. Rather than one fundamental ideal machine to describe the behaviour of a complex system, there are many possible ideal machines, extending Turing's approach to reflect the multiplicity of system descriptions required to express more than weak input-output equivalence of systems. Cognitive science is concerned with stronger equivalence; e.g., do two models go through the same states at some level of description? The state-based definition of algorithms serves as a basis for such strong equivalence and facilitates formal renditions of abstraction and implementation as relations between algorithms. It is possible to prove within the new framework whether or not one given algorithm is a valid implementation of another, or whether two unequal algorithms have a common abstraction, for example. Some implications of the theory are discussed, notably a characterisation of connectionist versus classical models.

Abstract

Background: Falls and their sequelae cost more than $50 billion every year. Older adults with hearing loss are at 2.4 times greater risk of falls than their normal hearing peers. Current research is inconclusive about whether hearing aids can offset this increased fall risk, and no previous studies considered if outcomes differed based on the consistency of hearing aid use. Methods: Individuals 60 years and older with bilateral hearing loss completed a survey consisting of the Fall Risk Questionnaire (FRQ) and questions about hearing loss history, hearing aid use, and other common fall risk factors. In this cross‐sectional study, fall prevalence, as well as fall risk (based on FRQ score), was compared between hearing aid users and non‐users. A separate group of consistent hearing‐aid users (at least 4 h daily use for more than 1 year) was also compared with inconsistent/non‐users. Results: Responses from 299 surveys were analyzed. Bivariate analysis found 50% reduced odds of experiencing a fall for hearing aid users compared with non‐users (OR = 0.50 [95% CI: 0.29–0.85], p = 0.01). After adjusting for age, sex, hearing loss severity, and medication usage, those who reported any hearing aid use still had lower odds of falls (OR = 0.48 [95% CI: 0.26–0.90], p = 0.02) and lower odds of being at risk for falls (OR = 0.36 [95% CI: 0.19–0.66] p < 0.001) than non‐users. Results for consistent hearing aid users demonstrate an even stronger association of lowered odds of falling (OR = 0.35 [95% CI: 0.19–0.67], p < 0.001) and lower odds of being at risk for falls (OR = 0.32 [95% CI: 0.12–0.59], p < 0.001), suggesting a potential dose–response relationship. Conclusions: These findings suggest that use of hearing aids—especially consistent hearing aid use—is associated with lower odds of experiencing a fall or being classified as at risk for falls in older individuals with hearing loss. Abstract

We present an overview of the Middle Ages Galaxy Properties with Integral Field Spectroscopy (MAGPI) survey, a Large Program on the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope. MAGPI is designed to study the physical drivers of galaxy transformation at a lookback time of 3–4 Gyr, during which the dynamical, morphological, and chemical properties of galaxies are predicted to evolve significantly. The survey uses new medium-deep adaptive optics aided Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations of fields selected from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, providing a wealth of publicly available ancillary multi-wavelength data. With these data, MAGPI will map the kinematic and chemical properties of stars and ionised gas for a sample of 60 massive ( ) central galaxies at in a representative range of environments (isolated, groups and clusters). The spatial resolution delivered by MUSE with Ground Layer Adaptive Optics ( arcsec FWHM) will facilitate a direct comparison with Integral Field Spectroscopy surveys of the nearby Universe, such as SAMI and MaNGA, and at higher redshifts using adaptive optics, for example, SINS. In addition to the primary (central) galaxy sample, MAGPI will deliver resolved and unresolved spectra for as many as 150 satellite galaxies at , as well as hundreds of emission-line sources at . This paper outlines the science goals, survey design, and observing strategy of MAGPI. We also present a first look at the MAGPI data, and the theoretical framework to which MAGPI data will be compared using the current generation of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations including EAGLE, MAGNETICUM, HORIZON-AGN, and ILLUSTRIS-TNG. Our results show that cosmological hydrodynamical simulations make discrepant predictions in the spatially resolved properties of galaxies at . MAGPI observations will place new constraints and allow for tangible improvements in galaxy formation theory.

Abstract

Objective. To determine social factors associated with increased risk of hospital admission from diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or diabetic coma as well as risk of prolonged hospital stay. Methods. A cohort of all children ([less than or equal to] 21 years) with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) in the National Inpatient Sample admitted for DKA or diabetic coma during 1996 or 1997 was conducted. Patients&apos; age, race, gender, and insurance coverage were identified. Length of stay and charges were examined; prolonged length of stay was defined as [greater than or equal to] 7 days. Results. A total of 8443 children with a primary hospital diagnosis of DKA and 123 children with type 1 DM and coma were identified; 55% of the children were girls, 32% were nonwhite, 29% received Medicaid insurance, and 33% resided in areas of poverty. Children with prolonged hospital stay were significantly more likely to be of nonwhite race (odds ratio [OR]: 2.0; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.6-2.5), to receive Medicaid insurance (OR: 1.4; 95% CI: 1.1-1.7), to live in areas of poverty (OR: 1.3; 95% CI: 1.1-1.7), and to be of younger age. Conclusions. When compared with state census data, nonwhite and poor children were more likely to be admitted with complications of DM and to have significantly prolonged and expensive hospital stays. These children should be targeted for intensive diabetes education and outpatient medical support both to improve their health and potentially to decrease total health care costs.
