A silicon microstrip detector (SSD) system for use in very high rate experiments has been designed [1,2,3,4,5,6] for Experiment E771[7] at Fermi National Accelerator laboratory. The detector electronics were designed from the ground up using ASIC chip sets where commercial circuits where not suitable. The electronics for the SSD were designed to operate with interaction rates up to [10.sup.7] interaction/sec (beam rates of 2 x [10.sup.8] proton/sec). In addition to speed, the detector for the current run is very compact with 10000 channels of active detector in a volume of 5cm x 5cm x 10cm. The system will be expanded to 16000 channels in the next Fermilab fixed target run. The strip pitch ranges from 25 [mu]m in the center of the detector near the target to 100 [mu]m pitch at the most downstream, outer edge of the detector. The readout is a latch design with efficiencies of 95% even in the presence of radiation damage and high leakage currents. The detector and associated amplifier electronics has presently been operated at 20 [degrees] C and is designed to operate at 80 [degrees] C.

International audience; BACKGROUND & AIMS: Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) and transient elastography (TE) are noninvasive techniques used to detect liver fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. MRE detects fibrosis more accurately than TE, but MRE is more expensive, and the concordance between MRE and TE have not been optimally assessed in obese patients. It is important to determine under which conditions TE and MRE produce the same readings, so that some patients can simply undergo TE evaluation to detect fibrosis. We aimed to assess the association between body mass index (BMI) and discordancy between MRE and TE findings, using liver biopsy as the reference, and validated our findings in a separate cohort. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study of 119 adults with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease who underwent MRE, TE with M and XL probe, and liver biopsy analysis from October 2011 through January 2017 (training cohort). MRE and TE results were considered to be concordant if they found patients to have the same stage fibrosis as liver biopsy analysis. We validated our findings in 75 adults with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease who underwent contemporaneous MRE, TE, and liver biopsy at a separate institution from March 2010 through May 2013. The primary outcome was rate of discordance between MRE and TE in determining stage of fibrosis (stage 2-4 vs 0-1). Secondary outcomes were the rate of discordance between MRE and TE in determining dichotomized stage of fibrosis (1-4 vs 0, 3-4 vs 0-2, and 4 vs 0-3). RESULTS: In the training cohort, there was 43.7% discordance in findings from MRE versus TE. BMI associated significantly with discordance in findings from MRE versus TE (odds ratio, 1.69; 95% confidence interval, 1.15-2.51; P = .008) after multivariable adjustment by age and sex. The findings were confirmed in the validation cohort: there was 45.3% discordance in findings from MRE versus TE. BMI again associated significantly with discordance in findings from MRE versus TE (odds ratio, 1.52; 95% confidence interval, 1.04-2.21; P = .029) after multivariable adjustment by age and sex. CONCLUSIONS: We identified and validated BMI as a factor significantly associated with discordance of findings from MRE versus TE in assessment of fibrosis stage. The degree of discordancy increases with BMI.

We present a measurement and comparison of the [chi][sub [ital c]1] and [chi][sub [ital c]2] production cross sections determined from interactions of 300-GeV/[ital c] [pi][sup [plus minus]] and [ital p] with a Li target. We find [chi][sub [ital c]1]/[chi][sub [ital c]2] production ratios of 0.52[sub [minus]0.27][sup +0.57] and 0.08[sub [minus]0.15][sup +0.25] from reactions induced by [pi][sup [plus minus]] and [ital p], respectively.

The production of the [chi][sub 1] and [chi][sub 2] states of charmonium has been observed in 300 GeV/[ital c] [pi][sup [plus minus]][ital N] and [ital pN] interactions. The fraction of the total inclusive [ital J]/[psi] production due to radiative [chi] decay has been determined to be 0.40[plus minus]0.04, 0.37[plus minus]0.03, and 0.30[plus minus]0.04 for the [pi][sup +], [pi][sup [minus]], and proton data, respectively. Total cross sections have been obtained of 131[plus minus]18[plus minus]14 and 188[plus minus]30[plus minus]21 nb/nucleon in the 300 GeV/[ital c] [pi][sup [minus]][ital N] interactions for [chi][sub 1] and [chi][sub 2] production. By measuring the contributions to the [ital J]/[psi] production due to both [psi][prime] and radiative [chi] decay, the cross sections for direct [ital J]/[psi] production have been determined to be 97[plus minus]14, 102[plus minus]14, and 89[plus minus]12 nb/nucleon for [pi][sup +], [pi][sup [minus]], and protons, respectively.

Hadroproduction of the {ital J}/{psi} and {psi}{prime} states has been studied in 300-GeV/{ital c} proton, antiproton, and {pi}{sup {plus minus}}Li interactions. Both total and differential cross sections in {ital x}{sub {ital F}} and {ital p}{sub {ital T}} have been measured for the {ital J}/{psi} for the {pi}{sup {plus minus}}, proton, and antiproton interactions. The ratio of {psi}{prime} to {ital J}/{psi} production has been determined for the four types of beam particles.

We have used 106 pb^-1 of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab to search for new particles decaying to dijets. We exclude at the 95% confidence level models containing the following new particles: axigluons and flavor universal colorons with mass between 200 and 980 GeV/c, excited quarks with mass between 80 and 570 GeV/c^2 and between 580 and 760 GeV/c^2, color octet technirhos with mass between 260 and 480 GeV/c^2, W' bosons with mass between 300 and 420 GeV/c^2, and E_6 diquarks with mass between 290 and 420 GeV/c^2., 18 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. A search has been made in 300 GeV/c pi+/– and proton-Li interactions for production of states that decay into J/psi or psi’ plus one or two pions. A 2.5sigma enhancement in the J/psi pi0 spectrum, possibly the recently reported 1P1 state of charmonium, is observed at a mass of 3.527 GeV/c2. In the J/psi plus two pion mass spectrum, we report, together with the expected psi’ –> J/psi pi+pi-, the tentative observation of a structure at a mass of 3.836 GeV/c2. No enhancements are seen in the J/psi pi+/-pi+/-, J/psi pi+/-pi0, J/psi pi+/-, or psi’ pi+/- mass spectra.

Experiment 705 at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has designed, built, and operated a large acceptance, highly segmented electromagnetic shower calorimeter using SF5 lead glass, SCG1-C scintillating glass, and two types of gas-based fine-grained hodoscopes. The calorimeter was used to reconstruct photons and electrons with energies ranging from a few GeV/c2 to over 100 GeV/c2 in 300 GeV/c pion and proton interactions on a lithium target at instantaneous interaction rates approaching several MHz. Construction details of the calorimeter are given. The readout electronics, calibration, and algorithms used to reconstruct the positions and energies of showering particles are discussed. Energy resolution, position resolution, and reconstruction efficiency are assessed using both calibration electron beams and electrons and pi0 mesons reconstructed in 300 GeV/c interactions.

- Abstract
The production of the chi2 and chi2 states of charmonium has been observed in 300 GeV/c pi+/-N and pN interactions. The fraction of the total inclusive J/psi production due to radiative chi decay has been determined to be 0.40 +/- 0.04, 0.37 +/- 0.03, and 0.30 +/- 0.04 for the pi+, pi-, and proton data, respectively. Total cross sections for chi1 and chi2 production of 131 +/- 18 +/- 14 and 188 +/- 30 +/- 21 nb/nucleon in the 300 GeV/c pi-N interactions have been obtained. By measuring the contributions to the J/psi production due to both psi’ and radiative chi decay, the cross sections for direct J/psi production have been determined to be 97 +/- 14, 102 +/- 14, and 89 +/- 12 nb/nucleon for pi+, pi-, and protons, respectively.

High Energy Physics::Experiment - Abstract
The rationale for pursuing beauty physics at the SSC in a fixed target configuration is described. The increased beauty production cross section at the SSC, combined with high interaction rate capability of the proposed detector, results in 1010-11 produced BB events per year. The long decay length of the B hadrons (all equal to10 cm) allows direct observation of B decays in the high resolution silicon microstrip vertex detector. To optimize the operation of the proposed beauty spectrometer and the SSC, parasitic extraction of attendant or artificially generated large amplitude protons using crystal channeling is proposed and explored. The large sample of fully reconstructed B events allows detailed studies various CP violating decays with requisite statistics to confront the standard model. The CP physics potentials of the proposed experiment is evaluated and compared with alternative approaches, such as asymmetric e+e- B Factories and specialized hadron colliders. © 1992.

Hadroproduction of the J/psi and psi’ states has been studied in 300-GeV/c proton, antiproton, and pi+-Li interactions. Both total and differential cross sections in x(F) and p(T) have been measured for the J/psi for the pi+-, proton, and antiproton interactions. The ratio of psi’ to J/psi production has been determined for the four types of beam particles.
