Coulomb excitation of the exotic neutron-rich nucleus Ne26 on a Pb208 target was measured at 58 MeV/u in order to search for low-lying E1 strength above the neutron emission threshold. This radioactive beam experiment was carried out at the RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility. Using the invariant mass method in the Ne25+n channel, we observe a sizable amount of E1 strength between 6 and 10 MeV excitation energy. By performing a multipole decomposition of the differential cross section, a reduced dipole transition probability of B(E1)=0.49+-0.16e2fm2 is deduced, corresponding to 4.9+-1.6% of the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule. For the first time, the decay pattern of low-lying strength in a neutron-rich nucleus is measured. The extracted decay pattern is not consistent with several mean-field theory descriptions of the pygmy states., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:0705.1753

It has been suggested that hydrogen ingestion into the helium shell of massive stars could lead to high $^{13}$C and $^{15}$N excesses when the shock of a core-collapse supernova passes through its helium shell. This prediction questions the origin of extremely high $^{13}$C and $^{15}$N abundances observed in rare presolar SiC grains which is usually attributed to classical novae. In this context $^{13}$N($\alpha$,p)$^{16}$O the reaction plays an important role since it is in competition with $^{13}$N $\beta^+$-decay to $^{13}$C. The $^{13}$N($\alpha$,p)$^{16}$O reaction rate used in stellar evolution calculations comes from the CF88 compilation with very scarce information on the origin of this rate. The goal of this work is to provide a recommended $^{13}$N($\alpha$,p)$^{16}$O reaction rate, based on available experimental data. Unbound nuclear states in the $^{17}$F compound nucleus were studied using the spectroscopic information of the analog states in $^{17}$O nucleus that were measured at the Alto facility using the $^{13}$C($^7$Li,t)$^{17}$O alpha-transfer reaction, and spectroscopic factors were derived using a DWBA analysis. This spectroscopic information was used to calculate a recommended $^{13}$N($\alpha$,p)$^{16}$O reaction rate with meaningful uncertainty using a Monte Carlo approach. The present $^{13}$N($\alpha$,p)$^{16}$O reaction rate is found to be within a factor of two of the previous evaluation, with a typical uncertainty of a factor 2-3. The source of this uncertainty comes from the three resonances at $E_r^{c.m.} = 221$, 741 and 959 keV. This new error estimation translates to an overall uncertainty in the $^{13}$C production of a factor of 50. The main source of uncertainty on the re-evaluated $^{13}$N($\alpha$,p)$^{16}$O reaction rate currently comes from the uncertain alpha-width of relevant $^{17}$F states.

The angular distributions of $^{8}$Be states in the excitation energy region, E$_{x}$ $\ \sim$($16.5-18.2$) MeV, produced in the $^{7}$Li($^{3}% $He,d)$^{8}$Be proton transfer reaction have been measured at the Orsay 14.8$-$MV tandem accelerator for $^{3}$He$^{2+}$ ion bombarding energy, E$_{lab}$ $=20$ MeV, and forward anglular range, $\theta_{lab}=5^{\circ}-50^{\circ}$. A high energy resolution detection system composed of a split-pole magnetic spectrometer and a $\Delta E-E$,\ position-sensitive drift chamber was used to record the energy spectra of outgoing deuterons. The measured cross section data for the direct reaction component have been separated from the compound nucleus one, then analyzed in the framework of the non local, FR-DWBA theory. New values of the $C^{2}S$ and ($S_{p1/2},$ $S_{p3/2})$ proton absolute and partial spectroscopic factors and related $\gamma_{p}^{2}(a)$\ proton reduced widths versus the p $+$ $^{7}$Li channel radius have been extracted for the $2^{+}(16.626)$ and $2^{+}(16.922),T=0+1$ isospin-mixed loosely bound states of astrophysical interest and the $1^{+}(17.640)$, $T=1$ unbound state of $^{8}$Be. They are compared to sparse earlier experimental values and to shell-model predicted ones from the literature, and are discussed. In particular, the status of the spectroscopic information on the $2^{+}$ isospin-mixed doublet is reviewed and up-dated. The application in nuclear astrophysics of the DWBA derived results is emphasised.

The Seebeck coefficient $S$ of the cuprate YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ was measured in magnetic fields large enough to suppress superconductivity, at hole dopings $p = 0.11$ and $p = 0.12$, for heat currents along the $a$ and $b$ directions of the orthorhombic crystal structure. For both directions, $S/T$ decreases and becomes negative at low temperature, a signature that the Fermi surface undergoes a reconstruction due to broken translational symmetry. Above a clear threshold field, a strong new feature appears in $S_{\rm b}$, for conduction along the $b$ axis only. We attribute this feature to the onset of 3D-coherent unidirectional charge-density-wave modulations seen by x-ray diffraction, also along the $b$ axis only. Because these modulations have a sharp onset temperature well below the temperature where $S/T$ starts to drop towards negative values, we infer that they are not the cause of Fermi-surface reconstruction. Instead, the reconstruction must be caused by the quasi-2D bidirectional modulations that develop at significantly higher temperature., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The Seebeck coefficient $S$ of the cuprate superconductor La$ _{2-x} $Sr$_{x} $CuO$ _{4}$ (LSCO) was measured in magnetic fields large enough to access the normal state at low temperatures, for a range of Sr concentrations from $x = 0.07$ to $x = 0.15$. For $x = 0.11$, 0.12, 0.125 and 0.13, $S/T$ decreases upon cooling to become negative at low temperatures. The same behavior is observed in the Hall coefficient $R_{H}(T)$. In analogy with other hole-doped cuprates at similar hole concentrations $p$, the negative $S$ and $R_{H}$ show that the Fermi surface of LSCO undergoes a reconstruction caused by the onset of charge-density-wave modulations. Such modulations have indeed been detected in LSCO by X-ray diffraction in precisely the same doping range. Our data show that in LSCO this Fermi-surface reconstruction is confined to $0.085 < p < 0.15$. We argue that in the field-induced normal state of LSCO, charge-density-wave order ends at a critical doping $p_{\rm CDW} = 0.15 \pm 0.005$, well below the pseudogap critical doping $p^\star \simeq 0.19$.

Coulomb excitation of the exotic neutron-rich nucleus $^{26}$Ne on a $^{nat}$Pb target was measured at 58 A.MeV in order to search for low-lying E1 strength above the neutron emission threshold. Data were also taken on an $^{nat}$Al target to estimate the nuclear contribution. The radioactive beam was produced by fragmentation of a 95 A.MeV $^{40}$Ar beam delivered by the RIKEN Research Facility. The set-up included a NaI gamma-ray array, a charged fragment hodoscope and a neutron wall. Using the invariant mass method in the $^{25}$Ne+n channel, we observe a sizable amount of E1 strength between 6 and 10 MeV. The reconstructed $^{26}$Ne angular distribution confirms its E1 nature. A reduced dipole transition probability of B(E1)=0.49$\pm$0.16 $e^2fm^2$ is deduced. For the first time, the decay pattern of low-lying strength in a neutron-rich nucleus is obtained. The results are discussed in terms of a pygmy resonance centered around 9 MeV.

The early E < 511 keV gamma-ray emission from novae depends critically on the 18F(p,a)15O reaction. Unfortunately the reaction rate of the 18F(p,a)15O reaction is still largely uncertain due to the unknown strengths of low-lying proton resonances near the 18F+p threshold which play an important role in the nova temperature regime. We report here our last results concerning the study of the d(18F,p)19F(alpha)15N transfer reaction. We show in particular that these two low-lying resonances cannot be neglected. These results are then used to perform a careful study of the remaining uncertainties associated to the 18F(p,a)15O and 18F(p,g)19Ne reaction rates., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures. The spectrum of $^9$He was studied by means of the $^8$He($d$,$p$)$^9$He reaction at a lab energy of 25 MeV/n and small center of mass (c.m.) angles. Energy and angular correlations were obtained for the $^9$He decay products by complete kinematical reconstruction. The data do not show narrow states at $\sim $1.3 and $\sim $2.4 MeV reported before for $^9$He. The lowest resonant state of $^9$He is found at about 2 MeV with a width of $\sim $2 MeV and is identified as $1/2^-$. The observed angular correlation pattern is uniquely explained by the interference of the $1/2^-$ resonance with a virtual state $1/2^+$ (limit on the scattering length is obtained as $a > -20$ fm), and with the $5/2^+$ resonance at energy $\geq 4.2$ MeV., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

The 18F(p,alpha)15O reaction is recognized to be one of the most important reactions for nova gamma-ray astronomy as it governs the early E <= 511keV gamma emission. However in the nova temperature regime, its rate remains largely uncertain due to unknown low-energy resonance strengths. We report here the measurement of the D(18F,p)19F(alpha)15N one-nucleon transfer reaction, induced by a 14 MeV 18F radioactive beam impinging on a CD2 target; outgoing protons and 15N (or alpha-particles) were detected in coincidence in two silicon strip detectors. The ^18F(p, alpha)^15O reaction is recognized as one of the most important reaction for nova gamma-ray astronomy as it governs the early =< 511 keV emission. However, its rate remains largely uncertain at nova temperatures due to unknown low-energy resonance strengths. In order to better constrain this reaction rate, we have studied the one-nucleon transfer reaction, D(^18F,p alpha)^15N, at the CRC-RIB facility at Louvain La Neuve., Comment: Contribution to The Seventh International Symposium on Nuclei in the Cosmos

The 18F(p,alpha) reaction was recognized as one of the most important for gamma ray astronomy in novae as it governs the early 511 keV emission. However, its rate remains largely uncertain at nova temperatures. A direct measurement of the cross section over the full range of nova energies is impossible because of its vanishing value at low energy and of the short 18F lifetime. Therefore, in order to better constrain this reaction rate, we have performed an indirect experiment taking advantage of the availability of a high purity and intense radioactive 18F beam at the Louvain La Neuve RIB facility. The 11Be(p,d)10Be reaction has been performed in inverse kinematics with a radioactive 11Be beam of E/A = 35.3 MeV. Angular distributions for the 0+ ground state, the 2+, 3.37 MeV state and the multiplet of states around 6 MeV in 10Be were measured at angles up to 16 deg CM by detecting the 10Be in a dispersion-matched spectrometer and the coincident deuterons in a silicon array. Distorted wave and coupled-channels calculations have been performed to investigate the amount of 2+ core excitation in 11Be gs. The use of "realistic" 11Be wave functions is emphasised and bound state form factors have been obtained by solving the particle-vibration coupling equations. This calculation gives a dominant 2s component in the 11Be gs wave function with a 16% [2+ x 1d] core excitation admixture. Cross sections calculated with these form factors are in good agreement with the present data. The Separation Energy prescription for the bound state wave function also gives satisfactory fits to the data, but leads to a significantly larger [2 x 1d] component in 11Be gs., Comment: 39 pages, 12 figures. A fundamental goal of research in molecular biology is to understand protein structure. Protein crystallography is currently the most successful method for determining the three-dimensional (3D) conformation of a protein, yet it remains labor intensive and relies on an expert's ability to derive and evaluate a protein scene model. In this paper, the problem of protein structure determination is formulated as an exercise in scene analysis. A computational methodology is presented in which a 3D image of a protein is segmented into a graph of critical points. Bayesian and certainty factor approaches are described and used to analyze critical point graphs and identify meaningful substructures, such as alpha-helices and beta-sheets. Results of applying the methodologies to protein images at low and medium resolution are reported. A disagreement between two determinations of Gamma_alpha of the astro- physically relevant level at E_x=4.378 MeV in 19F has been stated in two recent papers by Wilmes et al. and de Oliveira et al. In this work the uncertainties of both papers are discussed in detail, and we adopt the value Gamma_alpha=(1.5^{+1.5}_{-0.8})10^-9eV for the 4.378 MeV state. In addition, the validity and the uncertainties of the usual approximations for mirror nuclei Gamma_gamma(19F) approx Gamma_gamma(19Ne), theta^2_alpha(19F) approx theta^2_alpha(19Ne) are discussed, together with the resulting uncertainties on the resonance strengths in 19Ne and on the 15O(alpha,gamma)19Ne rate., Comment: 9 pages, Latex, To appear in Phys.
