Abstract

Laser Plasma Acceleration (LPA) is capable of producing a GeV beam within a cm accelerating distance, but with a rather high initial divergence and large energy spread. COXINEL aims to demonstrate a compact Free Electron Laser using such a source, where a specific transport line with adequate elements is used, such as tunable high gradient quadrupoles for handling the divergence. An innovative permanent magnet based quadrupole (QUAPEVA) made of two quadrupoles superimposed capable of generating a gradient of 200 T/m is presented. The first quadrupole consists of magnets shaped as a ring and attaining a constant gradient of 155 T/m, and the second one made of four cylindrical magnets surrounding the ring and capable of rotating around their axis to achieve a gradient tunability of $\pm$ 46 T/m. Each tuning magnet is connected to a motor and controlled independently, enabling the gradient to be tuned with a rather good magnetic center stability ($\pm$10 $\mu$m) and without any field asymmetry. The measurements and field optimization of seven quadrupoles with different magnetic lengths are reported. A set of QUAPEVA triplet, installed at COXINEL, achieved good focusing and enabled beam based alignment., Comment: 4 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

High gradient quadrupoles are necessary for different applications such as laser plasma acceleration, colliders, and diffraction limited light sources. Permanent magnet quadrupoles provide a higher field strength and compactness than conventional electro-magnets. An original design of permanent magnet based quadrupole (so-called "QUAPEVA"), composed of a Halbach ring placed in the center with a bore radius of 6 mm and surrounded by four permanent magnet cylinders capable of providing a gradient of 210 T/m, is presented. The design of the QUAPEVAs, including magnetic simulation modeling, and mechanical issues are reported. Magnetic measurements of seven systems of different lengths are presented and confirmed the theoretical expectations. The variation of the magnetic center while changing the gradient strength is +/- 10 micrometer. A triplet of three QUAPEVA magnets are used to focus a beam with large energy spread and high divergence that is generated by Laser Plasma Acceleration source for a free electron laser demonstration., Comment: 4 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The field of gamma-ray astronomy has seen important progress during the last decade, yet there exists so far no common software framework for the scientific analysis of gamma-ray telescope data. We propose to fill this gap by means of the GammaLib software, a generic library that we have developed to support the analysis of gamma-ray event data. GammaLib has been written in C++ and all functionality is available in Python through an extension module. On top of this framework we have developed the ctools software package, a suite of software tools that enables building of flexible workflows for the analysis of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescope event data. The ctools are inspired by science analysis software available for existing high-energy astronomy instruments, and they follow the modular ftools model developed by the High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center. The ctools have been written in Python and C++, and can be either used from the command line, via shell scripts, or directly from Python. In this paper we present the GammaLib and ctools software versions 1.0 that have been released end of 2015. GammaLib and ctools are ready for the science analysis of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescope event data, and also support the analysis of Fermi-LAT data and the exploitation of the COMPTEL legacy data archive. Abstract

Tiganophytaceae Swanepoel, F. Forest & A. E.vanWyk, fam. nov. Type:������ Tiganophyton Swanepoel, F. Forest & A.E.van Wyk. A member of Brassicales, our new family is most closely related to Bataceae and Salvadoraceae and more distantly to Koeberliniaceae. It is morphologically distinct from these and all other known families of the order and easily distinguished by, amongst others, the following combination of characters (for a more comprehensive comparison, see Table 1): dwarf shrub with stems distinctly differentiated into long and short shoots; leaves minute, dimorphic, spirally arranged; glucosinolates present; flowers bisexual, laterally flattened, borne singly in bract axils on short shoots only; calyx, corolla and androecium tetramerous; sepals fused; petals free, not clawed; staminal disc (receptacle?) present; nectary glands absent; ovary deeply bilobed, apparently bilocular; gynophore present, bent in near S-shape; ovary horizontally orientated or occasionally inverted; style gynobasic; ovules two per locule; fruit a dry, persistent, oneseeded nutlet. Tiganophytaceae differ from Bataceae, Salvadoraceae and Koeberliniaceae by the distinct differentiation of vegetative axes into long and short shoots (vs. mainly long shoots), dimorphic foliage leaves (vs. monomorphic), fruit a nutlet (vs. berry or drupe), ovary bilobed and horizontally orientated or inverted (vs. not lobed and upright), and gynobasic style (vs. apical). It furthermore is easily distinguished from Bataceae by spirally arranged leaves (vs. decussate), hermaphroditic plants (vs. monoecious or dioecious), no stipules (vs. present, early deciduous), solitary flowers in bract axils (vs. in cone-like spikes), sessile petals (vs. long clawed in males; absent in females), gynophore present (vs. absent), and two ovules per locule (vs. one); from Salvadoraceae it differs also by having no stipules (vs. present), spirally arranged leaves (vs. opposite), solitary flowers in bract axils (vs. racemes, panicles or axillary fascicles), free petals (vs. basally fused), no nectar glands (vs. often present), and well-developed and near S-shaped gynophore (vs. absent or short and straight); from Koeberliniaceae it differs also by the lack of thorns (vs. present), solitary flowers in bract axils (vs. axillary umbel-like racemes), fused sepals (vs. free), sessile petals (vs. shortly clawed), four stamens (vs. eight, rarely ten), no separate nectar glands (vs. present), and two ovules per locule (vs. many). As families, Tiganophytaceae, Bataceae and Koeberliniaceae are morphologically distinct.However, our molecular evidence indicates that Bataceae are nested in Salvadoraceae (also Sun et al. 2016), making Salvadoraceae paraphyletic, but data on more taxa are needed to fully resolve the possible relationships among these families. A phylogenetic analysis of Brassicales inferred from 72 plastid genes by Edger et al. (2018) showed Salvadoraceae and Bataceae to be sisters, but this is of little significance for our use as it was based on a limited sampling of Salvadoraceae, with both Dobera and Azima absent. From a practical point of view, it would serve little purpose to create heterogeneous families with little or no predictive value, although some may argue that monotypic families do little in the way of summarizing information, perhaps preferring to opt for subfamily or tribal status. Considering available evidence for these families, indications are that the largest one, Salvadoraceae, is heterogeneous as currently circumscribed. For example, Azima is, amongst others, morphologically and anatomically distinct from other members of the family (e.g. Takhtajan 2009), and in the past has been placed in a family of its own, namely Azimaceae (Wight & Gardner 1845). However, Azima does share some morphological features with Batis, notably the possession of unisexual flowers (Ronse De Craene 2005) and an ovary with a false septum, albeit only an apical one (Kshetrapal 1970), as is also present in Dobera (Ronse De Craene & Wanntop 2009). Abstract

La simulation thermodynamique commence à s’utiliser dans le domaine des matériaux cimentaires. Cet outil thermodynamique est actuellement employé principalement comme moyen de vérification où d’interpolation de résultats pour des mélanges dont la composition chimique est connue de façon précise. Cependant, les avancées de cette technologie nous laissent penser qu’il est possible de l’utiliser comme outils de conception ou de préformulation permettant d’affiner et d’optimiser les matériaux cimentaires. Nous avons donc tenté à l’aide de la seule composition chimique et du taux d’hydratation de nos matériaux de simuler quatre mélanges cimentaires à base de ciment Portland, de laitier de haut fourneau et de filler calcaire. Nous avons, ensuite comparé les résultats ainsi obtenus à ceux obtenus par l’analyse DRX. Ainsi nous avons constaté que la plupart des mécanismes d’hydratation qui ont lieu dans ces mélanges ont été prédits par le calcul thermodynamique. Abstract

Aim: The Guineo‐Congolian region in Africa constitutes the second largest area of tropical rainforest (TRF) in the world. It covered an estimated 15–22 million km² during the late Miocene (55–11 Ma) and it has experienced since a declining trend, currently reaching 3.4 million km², associated with increasing aridification and the replacement of TRF by savanna habitats. Here, we examine whether rainforest area contraction led to a decrease in net diversification rates linked to increasing extinction, or if it is associated with increasing opportunities for allopatric or ecological speciation during periods of forest fragmentation. Location: Tropical Africa, Guineo‐Congolian region. Taxon: Anthonotha, Englerodendron, Berlinia clade (Leguminosae). Methods: We used a target enrichment approach combined with a complete data set representing all genera within the Berlinia clade. We combined phylogenomic, dating estimates, habitat reconstruction and diversification rate analyses to infer the effect of change in rainforest area coverage at two taxonomic levels: among genera, and within Anthonotha and Englerodendron. Results: We recovered fully resolved and well‐supported relationships among all genera and among species within the two genera. Most genera (87.5%) diverged before the Pleistocene, but Anthonotha and Englerodendron diversified recently, during the most recent cycles of forest contraction and expansion of the Pleistocene. Main conclusions: Our results suggest that the Berlinia clade displays an overall trend of accumulation of species over evolutionary time, suggesting the reduction in TRF area has not decreased net diversification rates. Most habitat shifts to savanna occurred in the Miocene, with no major habitat shifts during the most recent phases of forest expansion–contraction in the Pleistocene. Shifts in habitat from lowland forest to savanna did not trigger diversification rates, but habitat fragmentation might have increased diversification rates through allopatric speciation.
