4. Understanding Female Sport Attrition in a Stereotypical Male Sport within the Framework of Eccles's Expectancy-Value Model

Abstract

An empirical research study based upon the expectancy-value model of Eccles and colleagues (1983) investigated the effect of gender-role orientations on psychological dimensions of female athletes' sport participation and the likelihood of their continued participation in a stereotypical masculine activity. The model (Eccles et al., 1983) posits that gender-role orientation is linked to the intention to persist or discontinue sport participation, which is acted upon indirectly through mediation by two motivational variables: an individual's perceived competence and the perceived value of the activity. Three models were compared to test this mediation hypothesis with 333 female adolescent handball players in a prospective study. Results from structural equation modeling showed that a fully mediated model fit the data. The masculinity orientation positively predicted value for and perceived competence in handball, whereas the femininity orientation negatively predicted perceived competence. In addition, the two motivational variables negatively predicted intention to drop out. Finally, such intentions are the more proximal predictors of actual dropout.

20. Athletes' perceptions of role ambiguity and coaching competency in sport teams: a multilevel analysis.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between athletes' perceptions of role ambiguity and two theoretically derived dimensions of coaching competency (i.e., game strategy and technique competencies). A total of 243 players from 26 teams representing various interdependent sports completed French versions of the Role Ambiguity Scale and the Coaching Competency Scale. Multilevel analyses supported the existence of relationships between the four dimensions of role ambiguity and the two dimensions of coaching competency at both individual and team levels. When the levels were considered jointly, athletes perceiving greater ambiguity in their role in both offensive and defensive contexts were more critical of their coach's capacities to lead their team during competitions and to diagnose or formulate instructions during training sessions. The results also indicated that the dimension of scope of responsibilities was the main contributor to the relationship with coaching competency at an individual level, whereas role evaluation was the main contributor to this relationship at a group level. Findings are discussed in relation to the role episode model, the role ambiguity dimensions involved in the relationships according to the level of analysis considered, and the salience of ambiguity perceptions in the offensive context. Abstract

The present report provides a summary of five studies undertaken to develop a French-language instrument to assess cohesiveness in sport teams—the “Questionnaire sur l' Ambiance du Groupe” (QAG). For the initial version of the instrument, the Group Environment Questionnaire (Carron, Widmeyer, & Brawley, 1985) was translated into French using the protocol outlined by Vallerand (1989). However, psychometric analyses undertaken in Studies 1, 2, and 3 failed to yield acceptable evidence of construct validity. Items were then revised in an attempt to make them more suitable for the French culture. Subsequent analyses in Study 4 provided support for the construct validity and reliability (internal consistency and interscale equivalence) of the QAG. In Study 5, predictive validity was demonstrated. The QAG has been found to possess satisfactory psychometric properties as a measure of cohesion in sport teams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Happiness is the current hot topic whether in television, press or research. For some, it is immeasurable; for others it is quantifiable and thus has numerous measurement tools. After having defined happiness, the aim of the four studies presented below is to propose a valid French adaptation of the three-dimensional Orientation To Happiness questionnaire (OTH; Peterson, Park, & Seligman, 2005). In Study 1, successive PCA and CFA revealed that there exists a three factor structure conforming to its theoretical framework. Study 2 was used to test different models to confirm this factor structure. We found two models that proved to be adequate. The results of Study 3 demonstrate satisfactory test-retest stability for each of the three subscales. Study 4 was undertaken to test the convergent validity of the scale. Moreover, this study showed the relationship between variables linked to quality of life and their impact on happiness. To summarize, the four studies together demonstrate satisfactory psychometric qualities of the scale that is now called "Échelle Francophone d'Inclinaison au Bonheur" (EFIB), and show how happiness is impacted by different variables linked to quality of life.

International audience; Abstract Introduction Sports are traditionally considered to be masculine activities, but recent studies have shown that femininity and women may be more highly valued in this domain than previously thought. Objective This study sought to elucidate the apparent ambivalence about women in sports and specifically examined the social value of gender and sex in physical education classes. Method French physical education teachers from primary and middle schools and students in the fifth and ninth grades participated in two studies using the judge's paradigm and the self-presentation paradigm, respectively. Results The first study indicated that both masculinity and femininity were valued by teachers but were differently anchored in the components of social value. While masculinity was associated with the likelihood of success (social utility), femininity was associated with likeableness (social desirability). The stereotype of "male superiority in sport" also modulated social utility judgments. The second study revealed that ninth graders presented themselves as highly feminine and masculine when they strove to gain approval. Fifth graders only used femininity as a self-presentation strategy, suggesting that at this age children do not yet attempt to conform to teachers' expectations. Conclusion These studies suggest that future research on stereotypes in sports would benefit from theoretical approaches that take ambivalence in personal judgments into account, as this would avoid misinterpreting null or counter-stereotypical effects as apparently positive.

International audience; Ce travail s’inscrit dans la poursuite d’une recherche initiée en 1999 qui visait principalement à identifier le « genre » et les « styles » (Clot & Faïta, 2000) de jeu d’équipes Nationales de rugby. Par une approche technologique, cette recherche interroge des concepts de la clinique de l’activité avec des visées de didactique professionnelle utiles pour les intervenants éducatifs en sport. A l’aide d’un outil de recueil de données (le scénario du match), nous comparons les phases de jeu de 1999 avec celles observées lors de la Coupe du Monde 2007. Cette confrontation entre les données des deux événements nous permet de déterminer un « genre » du jeu pour la coupe du monde 2007. De plus, une analyse de l’évolution du jeu de chaque équipe entre 1999 et 2007 nous conduit à identifier des « styles » particuliers d’équipes. Nos résultats sont alors discutés afin d’envisager des pistes pour la formation des enseignants ou entraîneurs spécialisés en rugby.

Abstract

International audience; Examined the validity and reliability of a French short version of the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (S. Bem, 1974, BSRI) for adolescents, and the organization of gender-related self-schemata. Four studies involving 1,204 adolescents (average ages 14.91, 15.60, and 15.38 yrs) residing in France were carried out to translate BSRI items and evaluate their clarity; assess concurrent validity, construct validity, and reliability; and analyze the psychological construct correlates and produce statistical norms. Results show a positive linkage between masculinity and sports practice on the 1 hand, and self-esteem on the other. Femininity was negatively linked to self-esteem and sports practice. Factor analysis confirmed correlations between gathered data and theoretical constructs. There was a general lack of connection between the subscales. The questionnaire demonstrated sufficient internal consistency and test-retest reliability.

International audience; Examined the effect of sex-role attitudes in adolescent females on quitting handball, a perceived sex-inappropriate sport. In the 3-yr study, 336 French female handballers (aged 13-15 yrs) completed a French version (P. Fontayne et al, 2000) of the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (S. L. Bem, 1974) concerning femininity and masculinity. Other collected data included observation of sport seasons. Results show that feminine and undifferentiated Ss stopped the practice of handball significantly earlier than did masculine and androgynous Ss. After 173 days, 62% of feminine Ss continued playing handball; in contrast, 81% of the undifferentiated, 82% of the masculine, and 87% of the androgynous Ss continued playing handball at the end of the period. After 498 days, 80% of androgynous Ss continued playing handball, compared with 75% of masculine, 68% of undifferentiated, and 60% of feminine Ss. After 823 days, 76% of androgynous Ss continued playing handball, compared with 69% of masculine, 56% of feminine, and 50% of undifferentiated Ss. Findings suggest that the involvement and perseverance of females in sports remains problematic as long as some activities are considered as stereotypically masculine.
