We consider the effect that an upstream cylinder has on the effective inertial collection efficiency of a downstream cylinder. We consider an initially uniform distribution of particles moving past a cylindrical fiber in a potential crossflow and numerically calculate the resulting particle distribution far downstream of the fiber using finite differences. We then investigate the effect that the downstream distribution of particles has on the effective inertial collision efficiency of a downstream test cylinder oriented parallel to the first. We show that the effective collision efficiency of the test cylinder depends on its relative offset in the transverse direction (normal to the flow) with respect to the upstream cylinder. For relatively small offsets there is complete shielding, and no particles collide with the test cylinder. As the offset increases, a growing effective collision efficiency is observed leading to a significant enhancement relative to the collision efficiency of an isolated cylinder for intermediate offsets and Stokes numbers close to unity. Importantly, we observe relative gains in effective collision efficiency above 100% for a range of Stokes number and offset values. For larger offsets and Stokes numbers, the effect of the upstream cylinder on the effective collision efficiency of the test cylinder decreases and eventually becomes negligible. Detailed results are provided for Stokes drag acting on the particles and we also show that a non-linear drag has negligible effect on the observed trends for the conditions relevant to filtration systems. These results suggest that the arrangement of fibers has a substantial effect on inertial particle impaction even when neighboring fibers do not alter the flow field around each individual collector. Moreover, periodic arrangements with specific orientations with respect of the flow could lead to a significant enhancement of the inertial collision of particles on an array of collectors, thus contributing towards a better filtration performance.

Flow over stepped weirs are characterized by their strong turbulent mixing which enhances the oxygen transfer and dissolved oxygen (DO). This paper investigates the aeration performance of stepped weirs, and in particular, the effects of installation of the labyrinths on the steps, various weir slopes, upstream DO concentrations and tailwater depths. 19 physical models of flat, stepped-labyrinth and pooled-stepped weirs with three different slopes (1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 V: H) were tested. For each configuration, the downstream concentration of DO was measured utilizing a wide range of upstream concentrations of DO. The results indicated that the DO ratio with the best configurations were the stepped-labyrinth weirs with slopes of 1:1 and 1:2; approximately 62% higher than that of the flat stepped weirs. However, the dissolved oxygen efficiency showed a 15% decrease in models with a slope of 1:3 compared to those with a slope of 1:1. In all cases, the results demonstrated that the dissolved oxygen efficiency decreased either by increasing the upstream DO concentration or by increasing the flow discharge. The results yielded new design criteria for flat and stepped-labyrinth weirs to attain maximum aeration performance. Finally, empirical correlations were proposed for predicting the DO over stepped-labyrinth weirs.

This paper explores the potential of water jet eductor to replace large condensers and vacuum pump in the thermal desalination systems, with heat source temperatures below 95 °C. The operational limit of eductor has been investigated for active vapor transport and condensation to produce permeate. Combined system and its operational principle have been proposed with critical examination based on suction performance of Eductor. Experimental and computational study are the primary methodology of this work. The computational analysis of single-phase flow in Eductor, is in proper agreement with the experimental data. The result showed primary pressure & area ratio has positive impact and swirl ratio has negative impact on suction. The extended thermal analysis summarizes strength of Eductor while working with lower temperature sources and optimum cooling capacity of proposed system. Considering the simplicity and reduction in footprint, proposed application has been highlighted. The research disseminates knowledge on maximum vacuum generation capacity of Eductor and operational limit of thermal desalination system.

For the accuracy of simulated water surface profiles, the choosing of the required Manning coefficient is important. Furthermore, in the analysis of flow in open-channel, especially in hydraulic modeling, channel roughness variable forecasting is done. Therefore, it is important to calibrate the channel coefficient roughness for open channels, either artificial or natural. In the current investigation, the magnitude of Manning's coefficient “n” is occurred to calibrate the magnitude of the “n” coefficient by contrasting the simulated profiles of water surface with one reported, utilizing the HEC-RAS turbulent flow model for the Euphrates canal. The flows for the year 2020 were considered for this calibration. The magnitude of the roughness coefficient of Manning for the Euphrates river from Hindiya dam to Kufa dam indicates a strong agreement between the water surface profiles of observed and computed, n = 0.045 and n = 0.047 for the major channel and floodplain, respectively.

This paper investigates suppressing the pitching oscillation of a NACA 0012 airfoil at a Reynolds number of [Formula: see text] by using phase-shifted trailing-edge morphing. The latter considering geometric nonlinearity is simulated numerically based on spatiotemporal polynomial surface fitting. Flowfield results and aerodynamic forces are obtained by solving the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations accompanied by a low-Reynolds-number modified-shear-stress transport model. Dynamic meshing combining a sliding mesh and Laplacian diffusion is developed to deal with the deformation of the computational grid due to the large-amplitude coupled pitching and morphing motion of the airfoil. The airfoil is subjected to stall-flutter analysis from an energy perspective by calculating the energy extracted by the airfoil from the freestream in an oscillation cycle. The flow control mechanism of the phase-offset trailing-edge morphing is analyzed in terms of the pressure distribution and moment contribution. The results suggest that trailing-edge motion with a phase of [Formula: see text] reduces the energy extraction by more than 300% and could be effective for suppressing the stall-flutter limit-cycle oscillation amplitude in specific ranges of amplitude and frequency.

Abrasive flow jet machining (ASJM) is modern manufacturing technique which uses comparatively low-pressure abrasive flow jet for machining various machined surfaces like holes, channels and intricate shapes which is not possible from conventional machining processes. The effect of abrasive particle concentration on the impacting slurry velocity on the surface was examined in the present CFD simulation, resulting in target surface erosion. To predict the impact velocity of abrasive particles hitting the surface, a 2D CFD model was used. The depth of machined surface, surface irregularity and surface removal rate at normal incidence mainly depend on the KE of particle, impact angle, etc. in line with previously published research work on highly pressurised air and water driven abrasive jet. In the present work CFD simulation is performed to predict the effect of solid particle concentration on the impacting slurry jet velocity at the target surface and also turbulence kinetic energy near the surface is studied. As per the CFD results the simulation model predictions the velocity of impacting particle goes on decreasing due to internal frictional resistance between solid and liquid phase and it shows scope of further parametric analysis in this area.

We are developing a universal, advanced ventricular assist device (AVAD) with automatic pressure regulation suitable for both left and right ventricular support. The primary goal of this computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was to analyze the biventricular performance of the AVAD across its wide range of operating conditions. An AVAD CFD model was created and validated using in vitro hydraulic performance measurements taken over conditions spanning both left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and right ventricular assist device (RVAD) operation. Static pressure taps, placed throughout the pump, were used to validate the CFD results. The CFD model was then used to assess the change in hydraulic performance with varying rotor axial positions and identify potential design improvements. The hydraulic performance was simulated and measured at rotor speeds from 2,300 to 3,600 revolutions/min and flow rates from 2.0 to 8.0 L/min. The CFD-predicted hydraulic pressure rise agreed well with the in vitro measured data, within 6.5% at 2300 rpm and within 3.5% for the higher rotor speeds. The CFD successfully predicted wall static pressures, matching experimental values within 7%. High degree of similarity and circumferential uniformity in the pump's flow fields were observed over the pump operation as an LVAD and an RVAD. A secondary impeller axial clearance reduction resulted in a 10% decrease in peak flow residence time and lower static pressures on the secondary impeller. These lower static pressures suggest a reduction in the upwards rotor forces from the secondary impeller and a desired increase in the pressure sensitivity of the pump. The CFD analyses supported the feasibility of the proposed AVAD's use as an LVAD or an RVAD, over a wide range of operating conditions. The CFD results demonstrated the operability of the pump in providing the desired circumferential flow similarity over the intended range of flow/speed conditions and the intended functionality of the AVAD's automated pressure regulation.

A novel tribologic system was developed in which volatile lubricants (carbon dioxide-CO2 or nitrogen-N2) were used as a substitute for mineral oil-based lubricants in deep drawing processes. This process allows an intermediate medium to be introduced into the tool contact surfaces under high pressure by flow-optimized, laser-drilled microholes. This eliminates the need for subsequent cost-intensive cleaning processes as volatile lubricants evaporate while expanding to ambient pressure without leaving any residue. This article gives an overview of the current findings to enable and characterize the novel tribologic system. The areas of microhole laser drilling by ultrashort pulsed laser radiation, characterization of the novel tribologic system and realization of the system using a prototype tool will be described., Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Projekt DEAL

A mechanistic model has been applied for the prediction of corrosion rate in multiphase (water–oil-gas) flow regimes. This is due to inadequacies of existing models to adequately address a wide variety of corrosion dependent parameters with special emphasis on multiphase flow parameters. This model takes into account; water cut, volumetric phase fraction of oil and gas, temperature, pressure, other data collected relating to the pipe age, sand particle deposit, CO2 partial pressure, flow velocity, pH, chloride contents, mass transfer coefficients, and hydrogen sulfide. The applied model results show well above 91 percent prediction accuracy, while the prediction error ranges between 0.022 and 0.045 percent. When predicted results compared actual value (experimental data) with DeWaard and Milliams’ model; used in the oil and gas industries, it showed good agreement. It is seen that the resulting model produced an R2 value of 0.91 in comparison to 0.53, the value for Dewaard and Milliams’. It is obvious from numerical simulation that the multiphase flow parameters have major effects on the entire rate of corrosion of oil and gas multiphase flow pipelines. Finally, this research concluded by showing the developed model performance and comparison was made with numerical results. It is expected that the outcome of this research will be of significant help for the strengthening of the application of mechanistic models for predicting corrosion rate. This model will be useful for oil and gas industries worldwide for accurate prediction of corrosion rate.

Particle Impact Drilling (PID) is a new technology to effectively improve the rate of penetration (ROP) for oil and gas drilling in hard and strongly abrasive formations. In this paper, numerical simulation method is used to analyse the motion characteristics and the modulation method of particle swarm in high-pressure tank for the particle injection system based on differential pressure ejection in PID. The numerical simulation results show that: when there is no modulation elements, the motion of particle swarm in the high-pressure tank follows an asymmetric funnel flow with pulsating state, which could be divided into vertical flow domain, fast flow domain, slow flow domain and stagnation domain. The unstable dynamic arching effect of the funnel flow, the viscous effect of the liquid bridge force and the collapsing effect of the particle swarm could probably lead to the blockage of the discharge port of the high-pressure tank. When the semiapex angles of the high-pressure tank decreases, the volume flow rate of particles increases and the stagnation domain becomes smaller, but it becomes easier to form arching and blockage. The modelling results indicate that the pulsation of the funnel flow is minimum when the semiapex angle is 45° without the mutilation element, which means the funnel flow of the particle swarm is relatively stable. By introducing a conical modulating element above the discharge port, the unstable funnel flow of the particle swarm could be transformed to an overall uniform flow. The modelling results indicate that the installation height of the modulation element has the greatest influence on the pulsation degree. The optimized parameters for the conical modulation element based on numerical modelling tests are 70° for the vertex angle, 35 mm for the length of the flank and 70 mm for the installation heigh.

In contrast to the concurrent mixer-settler, the interaction between the mixing and settling chambers have to be taken into account in the simulation of the countercurrent mixer-settler, and no work has been reported for this equipment. In this work, a three-phase flow model based on the Eulerian multiphase model, coupled with a sliding mesh model is proposed for a countercurrent mixer-settler. Based on this, the dispersed phase distribution, flow pattern, and pressure distribution are investigated, which can help to fill the gap in the operation mechanism. In addition, the velocity vector distribution at the phase port shows an intriguing phenomenon that two types of vectors with opposite directions are distributed on the left and right sides of the same plane, which indicates that the material exchange in the mixing and settling chambers is simultaneous. Analysis of this variation at this location by a fast Fourier transform (FFT) method reveals that it is mainly influenced by the mixing chamber and is consistent with the main period of the outlet flow fluctuations. Therefore, by monitoring the fluctuation of the outlet flow and then analyzing it by the FFT method, the state of the whole tank can be determined, which makes it promising for the design of control systems for countercurrent mixer-settlers.

Well killing remains to be the critical technological stage before proceeding with workover operations. Well killing using Visco-Elastic Gel (VEG) has been found to preserve and reinstate the filtration characteristics of bottom-hole formation zone efficiently. Since, these methods exclude the possibility of penetration of well-killing fluids into the reservoirs, the natural permeability of the reservoir retained. In this article, the authors have reported for the first time about a new VEG with controlled fracture times that remains appropriate for killing oil wells associated with both terrigenous carbonate reservoir operations. A distinctive feature of the proposed technology using a VEG with adjustable degradation times (can vary from 3 to 120 h) is that it requires a relatively smaller volumes of the composition in comparison with that of the conventional technologies. As a result, a significant reduction in the negative impact on the reservoir is achieved resulting from a relatively low penetrating ability of the proposed VEG. High structural properties of the VEG make it possible to reliably block the overlapped reservoir interval and it excludes the penetration of process fluid into the reservoir. In addition, it also eliminates the flow of formation fluid from the reservoir, which is absolutely necessary for trouble-free repairing work. It was found from the present study that the use of a breaker of a particular, single type does not provide the desired results and in the present study, the authors have deduced a relatively complex breaker based on peroxyhydrate and citric acid with a 1:1 ratio. The introduction of the encapsulated peroxyhydrate at the stage of preparation of the VEG ensures monodispersity of its dispersion characteristics. The developed VEG was successfully tested in 32 wells of oil fields in the Perm Krai fields in Russia. The well killing technology developed and described in this article using a VEG with adjustable destruction times has successfully been applied in the fields of the Perm Krai. The economic effect from the application of this technology was found to be $6.000 per well.

This paper explores the transient upward flow of saline water in one-dimensional soil and soil–geosynthetics columns to evaluate preventive measures to mitigate salinity rise. Unsaturated soil concepts are utilised to elucidate the salinity movement through geotextile and geocomposite drain interfaces. The presence of a geotextile layer slowed down the capillary rise of the saline water. However, it did not prevent the breakthrough of the saline water due to the hydrophilicity of the geotextile and the suction at the geotextile base being close to the geotextile's water entry suction value. In contrast, using a geocomposite drain mitigated the upward saline wetting front. It acted as a salinity capillary barrier due to the initial hydrophobicity of its geotextile component and the air gap present in the geonet core.

Ti6Al4V is widely applied in the integral cascades of aero engines. As an effective machining method, electrochemical trepanning (ECTr) has unique advantages in processing surface parts made of hard-to-cut materials. In ECTr, the state of the flow field has a significant effect on processing stability and machining quality. To improve the uniformity of the flow field when ECTr is applied to Ti6Al4V, two different flow modes are designed, namely full-profile electrolyte supply (FPES) and edges electrolyte supply (EES). Different from the traditional forward flow mode, the flow directions of the electrolyte in the proposed modes are controlled by inlet channels. Simulations show that the flow field under EES is more uniform than that under FPES. To further enhance the uniformity of the flow field, the structure of EES is optimized by modifying the insulating sleeve. In the optimized configuration, the longitudinal distance between the center of the inlet hole and the center of the blade is 6.0 mm, the lateral distance between the centers of the inlet holes on both sides is 16.5 mm, the length to which the electrolyte enters the machining area is 1.5 mm, and the height of the insulating sleeve is 13.5 mm. A series of ECTr experiments are performed under the two flow modes. Compared with EES, the blade machined by FPES is less accurate and has poorer surface quality, with a surface roughness (Ra) of 3.346 μm. Under the optimized EES, the machining quality is effectively enhanced, with the surface quality improved from Ra = 2.621 μm to Ra = 1.815 μm, thus confirming the efficacy of the proposed methods.

The gas–liquid–solid mini fluidized bed (GLSMFB) combines the advantages of fluidized bed and micro-reactor, and meets the requirements for safety and efficiency of green development of process industry. However, there are few studies on its flow performance and no studies on its mass and heat transfer performance. In this paper, the characteristics of gas–liquid mass transfer in a GLSMFB were studied in order to provide basic guidance for the study of GLSMFB reaction performance and application. Using CO2 absorption by NaOH as the model process, the gas–liquid mass transfer performance of GLSMFB was investigated. The results show that the liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient and the gas–liquid interfacial area both increase with the increase of the superficial gas velocity within the experimental parameter range under the same given superficial liquid velocity. At the same ratio of superficial gas to liquid velocity, the liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient increases with the increase of the superficial liquid velocity. Fluidized solid particles strengthen the liquid mass transfer process, and the liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient is about 13% higher than that of gas–liquid mini bubble column.

As interconnects dominate circuit performance in modern FPGAs, placement becomes a crucial stage for timing closure. Traditional FPGA placers seldom consider the timing constraints, and thus may lead to illegal routing solutions. In this paper, we present an incremental timing-driven placement flow for advanced FPGAs. First, a timing-based global placement strategy is designed to guide heterogeneous blocks to desired locations with satisfied timing constraints. Then, a timing-aware packing algorithm is developed to mitigate the design complexity while improving the timing results. Finally, we propose a critical path-based optimization method to generate optimized layout without timing violations. We evaluate our algorithm based on industrial circuits using an advanced FPGA device. The experimental results show that our placer achieves an 5.1% improvement in worst slack, and produces placements that require 16.7% less time to route when compared with the leading commercial tool Xilinx Vivado.

Non-blade-order flow disturbances, also referred to as pre-stall disturbances or tip flow unsteadiness, are closely related with compressor instabilities. The present work provides a comprehensive investigation on multi-scale nature of non-blade-order disturbances and the underlying flow physics in axial compressors. By applying full-annulus Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations, along with space-time correlation and spatial Fourier decomposition, to the disturbed pressure, the propagating feature of the non-blade-order disturbances is obtained. Further, a bridge between non-blade-order disturbances and the evolution of unsteady vortex has been set up. The results show that non-blade-order disturbances, featured as short-length-scale (35 modes across annulus), first appear as the occurrence of tip leakage vortex fluctuation, while the compressor still operates far from stall. Leading-edge radial vortex appears at near stall condition, and its movement induces a circumferential propagating disturbance overlaying on the one induced by oscillating tip leakage vortex. The interaction of the short-scale disturbances with a low-amplitude long-scale (of circumference) disturbance is observed, which results in disturbances with multiple scales of consecutive spatial modes, along with multiple frequency peaks in spectra. The compressor falls into stall as the circumferential nonuniform scattering of the leading-edge vortexes occurs. The densely- and sparsely-scattered leading-edge radial vortexes induce a high-amplitude long-scale (of circumference) disturbance, i.e. stall disturbance.

Characteristics of the natural open fractures on the oil and gas reservoirs is crucial in drilling and production planning. Direct methods of fractures studies such as core analysis and image log interpretation are usually not performed in all drilled wells in a field. Therefore, in absence of these data, the indirect methods can play an important role. In this study, an integrated algorithm is introduced to identify the fractures and estimate its permeability employing conventional well logs. First, open fractures were identified and their properties including density, aperture, porosity and permeability were estimated using FMI log. Subsequently, the fracture index log (FR_Index) was estimated utilizing conventional logs including density, micro-resistivity, sonic (compressional, shear and stoneley slownesses), and caliper logs. After that, the fracture index permeability was estimated by improving the FZI permeability equation. The coherence coefficient between two estimated fracture permeability logs is 0.66. A good correlation is observed on the high permeability zones, but the lower correlation on the low permeability zones. It is notified that, in the high fracture permeability zones, the conventional logs are heavily impacted by fracture permeability. However, due to lower vertical resolution of conventional logs compared with the image logs, the conventional logs are less influenced by less dense fracture zones. However, this algorithm can be used with acceptable accuracy in all uncored and image log wells.

Liquid–solid fluidized beds (LSFB) modeling validation is crucial for establishing design rules and monitoring tools. However, it generally relies on comparing global variables, which overlook dynamic features that influence reaction outputs. This work aims to implement time series analysis tools to compare Radioactive Particle Tracking data with a simulation consisting of Computational Fluid Dynamics coupled with Discrete-Element Method. Experiments have been performed in a pilot-scale LSFB of calcium alginate spheres fluidized with a calcium chloride solution. The Diks’ test indicates that the simulation can capture the LSFB behavior. It also allows diagnosing flow regime transitions from the simulation. Trends of solid dispersion coefficients and mixing times predicted by the simulation are in good agreement with the experiments.

Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis is an important route to achieve the clean fuel production. The performance of gas–liquid separation equipment involving in the progressive condensation and separation of light and heavy hydrocarbons in the oil-gas products has become a bottleneck restricting the smooth operation of the F-T process. In order to remove the bottleneck, a gas–liquid vortex separator with simple structure, low pressure drop and big separation capacity was designed to achieve the efficient separation between gas and droplets for a long period. The RSM (Reynolds Stress Model) and DPM (Discrete Phase Method) are employed to simulate the flow characteristics and liquid distribution in the separator. The results show that the separation efficiency is influenced by the flow field and liquid phase concentration in the annular zone. The transverse vortex at the top of spiral arm entrains the droplets with small diameter into the upper annular zone. The entrained droplets rotate upward at an angle of about 37.4°. The screw pitch between neighbor liquid threads is about 0.3 m. There is a top liquid ring in the top of annular zone, where the higher is the liquid phase concentration, the lower is the separation efficiency. It is found that by changing the operating condition and the annular zone height the vortex can be strengthened but not enlarged by the inlet velocity. The screw pitch is not affected by both inlet velocity and annular zone height. The liquid phase concentration in the top liquid ring decreases with both the increases of inlet velocity and annular zone height. The total pressure drop is almost not affected by the annular zone height but is obviously affected by the inlet velocity. When the height of annular zone is more than 940 mm, the separation efficiency is not changed. Therefore, the annular zone height of 940 mm is thought to be the most economical design.

The supply of species gases and removal of liquid water in a PEM fuel cell are performed through gas flow channels. Therefore, optimising the flow channel configurations is critical for maximising performance of fuel cells. In this paper, the ANSYS PEM Fuel Cell Module is used to simulate a PEM fuel cell with an active area of 100 cm2 and four different flow channel configurations: single-channel serpentine, two-channel serpentine, three-channel serpentine, and parallel channel with headers under two set of different operating conditions. Under both sets of operating conditions, the simulation results indicated that 3-channel serpentine configuration has the best performance due to uniform distribution of species gases over the catalyst layer. It was concluded from the simulation results that the pressure-drop along the 3-channel serpentine configuration is less compared to other serpentine channel configurations, which will require less power for the blowing in of the species gases. The results obtained from simulation under more optimal operating conditions (set 2) used by Hwang’s URFC, predicted increase in the performance of all the four channel configurations compared to the set 1 operating conditions due to higher cell temperature and stichometry of inlet gases. Under set 2 operating conditions, the values of pressure drop across all the channel configurations have increased substantially due to higher flow rates of inlet gases.

Electrolyte jet machining (EJM) is a promising method for shaping titanium alloys due to its lack of tool wear, thermal and residual stress, and cracks and burrs. Recently, macro-EJM has attracted increasing attention for its high efficiency in machining wide grooves or planes. However, macro-EJM generates large amounts of electrolytic products, thereby increasing the difficulty of rapid product removal with a standard tool and reducing the surface quality. Therefore, for enhanced product transport, a novel tool with a back inclined end face was proposed for macro-EJM of TC4 titanium alloy. For comparison, also proposed were ones with a standard flat end face, a front inclined end face, and both front and back inclined end faces. The flow field distributions of all proposed tools were simulated numerically, and experiments were also conducted to validate the simulation results. The results show that one with a 5° back inclined end face can decrease the low-velocity flow zone in the machining area and increase the high-velocity flow zone at the back end of tool, thereby promoting rapid product removal. A relatively smooth bright-white groove surface was obtained. The same tool also resulted in the highest machining depth and material removal rate among the tested ones. In addition, rapid product removal was beneficial to the subsequent processing. Because of its rapid product removal, the machining depth and material removal rate during deep groove machining using the tool with a 5° back inclined end face were respectively 7% and 14% higher than those produced using a standard one. Moreover, the lowest bottom height difference of 0.027 mm can be obtained when the step-over value was 8.2 mm, and a plane with a depth of 0.285 mm and a bottom height difference of 0.03 mm was fabricated using the tool with a 5° back inclined end face.

The power capture performance of an adaptive bistable point absorber wave energy converter (WEC) in irregular waves is investigated in this paper. Based on the linear potential flow theory and Cummins equations, the equation of motion for the WEC is established in time domain. Then a parametric study is performed on the power capture performance of the WEC by considering the influences of different wave and system parameters such as the spring combination parameter, the stiffness of auxiliary springs and main springs, the original length value of the main spring, damping coefficient of the PTO systems and the significant wave height. The results show that in an irregular wave, each parameter will have a certain impact on the performance of the device. Appropriate device parameters need to be selected according to actual environmental parameters to ensure that the adaptive bistable WEC has better power capture performance than its linear and conventional bistable counterparts.

An integrated boost impeller can effectively improve the suction performance of an aircraft hydraulic pump (AHP). It must be designed very carefully; however, few studies thus far have investigated boost impellers. To explore the effect of the boost impeller, this study developed a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for an AHP based on the k-e turbulence model and full cavitation model. The results of verification tests demonstrated that the model is reliable for simulating the delivery characteristics of piston pumps and the boost capacity of the inlet impeller. Steady-state simulations reveal that the boost impeller can remarkably improve the suction performance and mitigate the cavitation damage due to insufficient fluid filling while only consuming a small proportion of the total input power. Transient-state simulations show that the pump with an impeller is more capable of catching up with a sudden increase in flow demand, and it has a lower suction flow ripple and impact. However, such a boost impeller also has some limitations such as magnifying the suction pressure fluctuation and having little effect on mitigating the cavitation caused by the back-flow jet.

Slugging represents one of the major regimes in fluidization, which occurs in small diameter beds with large bed height-to-diameter ratio or in large diameter beds with internals that resemble multiple small diameter fluidized beds. Slug types include round-nosed slug, wall slug and square-nosed slug. Studies of the slugs have been mainly focused on round-nosed or wall slugs known as half slug, typically occurring in Geldart group A particle fluidization. The square-nosed slug typically occurring for Geldart group D particles appears to be regarded as simple in its structure. The Electrical Capacitance Volume Tomography (ECVT) imaging of the square-nosed slugging phenomena conducted in this study reveals otherwise. That is the structure of the square-nosed slug is, in fact, complex, particularly with respect to its dynamic variation in fluidization. More broadly, this study examines experimentally the hydrodynamic characteristics of the square-nosed fluidization regime. Specifically, simultaneous measurements from multiple ECVT sensors provide non-invasive, continuous, 3-dimensional imaging of the entire flow region of the slugging bed and hence enabling the dynamic characterization of the evolution of the slugs. The analysis of the 3D images reconstructed for real-time gas–solid volume fraction profile of the slugging fluidized bed indicates that there are three different zones, namely, the bottom fluidization zone, the gas slug zone, and the solid slug zone, co-existing in the bed. The three zones present different hydrodynamic characteristics during the slug evolution. It is found that varying the gas velocity of the slugging bed mainly varies the maximum length of the gas slug zone, while it only has a minor effect on the lengths of the bottom fluidization zone and solid slug zone. It also has an insignificant effect on the solid volume fraction of the three zones.

The three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (3D-CFD) of a pulsating flow applied to the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) reaction was investigated in the riser of a circulating fluidized bed reactor. The kinetic parameters of the FCC and coke burning reactions for predicting the reactant conversion and product yield percentages were applied. To increase the reactant conversion level and product yield, the effect of the pulsating flow operating parameters was considered using a 2k statistical experimental design with four factors (amplitude, frequency, types of the waveform, and amplitude ratio). The 3D-CFD simulation was successfully validated from the experimental literature data. The frequency and type of the waveform were found to be the significant operating parameters. The expression of the fitted regression model and response surface contour were derived and revealed that the pulsating flow provides a higher reactant conversion level and product yield percentages compared to a non-pulsating or steady flow.

Supercritical water fluidized bed reactor (SCWFBR) is a novel concept for the gasification of coal and biomass to produce hydrogen. In this work, to enhance the mixing in the axial direction, an inclined distributor is introduced to optimize the flow dynamics in SCWFBR with partitioned fluid supply. Through numerical simulations based on the two fluid model (TFM), the effects of the inclined distributor structure and operating parameters on the solid distribution and the residence time are evaluated with the optimal values determined. Numerical results show that, area ratio = 2:1, SCW velocity ratio = 3:1, flow ratio = 3.36:1 and inclination angle = 20 ° are the optimal design in this paper. A predictive correlation of the minimum fluidization velocity for the improved SCWFBR is also proposed based on the numerical data. The average error between the correlation and numerical simulation results is approximately 1.4% which strongly demonstrates its capability. Finally, based on the optimal design, the lab-scale reactor is further scaled up and the studies about two scale-up rules are carried out. Only the cold flow is simulated in this study without considering chemical reaction which would be involved in future work.

Small tube irrigation is a new type of micro-irrigation that the emitters were replaced by small tubes. The small tubes of 4 mm diameter were connected to the laterals through the flow stabilizer or directly to the laterals. The discharge formulations and total heads of the system have been driven from the basic formulas of friction losses and other minor losses of the laterals. Based on hydraulic analysis of laterals, the cost function of lateral and pump, the operation cost and the objective function of lateral diameter optimization technique was established. In the study, a typical irrigation system of fruit tree was taken as an example, in which the length of lateral pipe was 100 m, and assuming that the small tube flow range is 10–40L/h, lateral diameter ranges 12–25 mm, and the field slope ranges −20%∼20%. The results showed that the minimum total cost was obtained with a lateral diameter of 13.6 mm at 10 L/h flow rate, for the flow rate of 20L/h, the minimum cost is obtained at the diameter of 13.6 mm for down-slopes and 17.2 for flat land and up-slopes, and for the flow rate of 30L/h and 40L/h the minimum cost is obtained at 17.2 mm diameter for any slopes.

Static electricity has an important effect on gas–solid fluidized bed reactor fluidization performance. In the process of fluidization, electrostatic interaction between particles will obviously accelerate particle agglomerate formation, which consequently reduces the fluidization performance. Pulsed gas flow injection is an efficient method to enhance particle mixing, thereby weakening the occurrence of particle agglomerate. In this study, the two-dimensional hybrid pulsed fluidized bed is established. The flow characteristics are studied by using the coupled CFD-DEM numerical simulation model considering electrostatic effects. Influences of different pulsed frequencies and gas flow ratios on fluidized bed fluidization performance are investigated to obtain the optimal pulsed gas flow condition. Results show that in the presence of static electricity, the bubble generation position is lower, which is conducive to the particle flow. Pulsed gas flow can increase the particle velocity and improve the diffusion ability. The bubble generation time is different at different frequencies, and the frequency of 2.5 Hz has the most obvious effect on the flow characteristics. Different gas flow ratios have significant impacts on the particle movement amplitude. When the pulse gas flow accounts for a large ratio, the particle agglomerate tends to be larger. Therefore, in order to improve the fluidization effect, the ratio of pulsed gas flow to stable gas flow should be appropriately reduced to 0.5 or less.

Thermoacoustics is about conversion between thermal and acoustical energies to provide alternative green technology for power cycle and cooling system. The oscillatory flow across porous structure inside the system is playing the role of energy conversion between the acoustic wave and the surface of the porous structure. Better understanding of fluid dynamics of oscillatory flow inside thermoacoustic system is therefore important for the thermoacoustic based energy conversion system. This paper presents the ‘entrance’ and ‘exit’ effects of the oscillatory flow within a parallel-plate structure that is placed inside a standing-wave thermoacoustic environment. Two-dimensional SST k-ω CFD models which were validated using experimental data and theoretical predictions were used for this investigation. Two different operating frequencies of 14.2 Hz and 23.6 Hz were studied for flow with five different amplitudes that were represented using drive ratios of 0.3%, 0.83%, 1.5%, 2.1% and 3%. These correspond to cases with Reynolds numbers between 5936 and 62926. Due to the cyclic nature of the flow, a region defined as an ‘exit’ region was observed in addition to the usual ‘entrance’ region and the fully developed region for flow inside a channel. The change of shape of velocity profiles from the ‘m’ shape profile, to the ‘slug-like’ profile and ‘parabolic-like’ profile was discussed in relation to the ‘entrance’ and ‘exit’ effects on flow inside the channel. The ‘entrance’ and ‘exit’ effects become bigger as drive ratio increases. The effect of ‘entrance’ and ‘exit’ are slightly reducing as frequency increases from 14.2 Hz to 23.6 Hz. This may be related to the shorter travel distance of fluid as the frequency increases. The results shown in this paper suggest that the flow within a 200 mm parallel-plate structure should be treated as developing flow especially for flow with low resonance frequency at drive ratio higher than 1%.

Reactor performance of bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) and turbulent fluidized bed (TFB) was carefully examined and systematically compared using catalytic ozone decomposition as a model reaction, based on a complete mapping of local flow structures and spatial distributions of ozone conversion and solids holdup. TFB clearly has a higher conversion and shows better reactor performance than BFB as a result of the vigorously turbulent flow and the relatively homogeneous gas–solids mixing in TEB. Besides, the intensive interaction between gas and solids in TFB leads to greater gas–solids contact efficiency of TFB over that of BFB. Due to gas bypassing and backmixing caused by bubbling behaviours and two-phase structure, BFB deviates significantly from a plug flow reactor and sometimes from a continuously stirred tank reactor. The flow structures essentially dictate the reactor performance in the low-velocity fluidized beds.

A basal clearance is usually designed beneath barriers to enable sufficient discharge to minimise the maintenance work over service life. Current design guidelines for multiple barriers usually neglect the influence of basal clearance, resulting in either an overconservative or a nonconservative design impact force acting on the subsequent barriers. In this study, physical model tests were carried out to investigate the effects of basal clearance height (Hc) beneath first barrier on the interaction between dry granular flow and dual rigid barriers. A new approach based on the hydrodynamic equation is proposed to estimate the impact force on the second barrier exerted by the basal discharge and overflow from the first barrier. The basal discharge can attenuate the impact force exerted on the second barrier by dissipating the kinetic energy of landing flow and apportioning the load contributions from basal discharge and overflow. For the first barrier with a barrier height HB1 that was twice the flow depth h0, the impact force on the second barrier was governed by overflow when Hc/h0 ≤ 0.6 and was dominated by basal discharge when Hc/h0 ≥ 0.8. These two criteria provide a basis for optimising the impact forces for multiple-barrier systems with basal clearances.

An analysis has been completed for a comprehensive set of vertical, dilute-phase pneumatic conveying pressure drop data from an investigation by Flatow. The data were collected in the established flow region for eight different materials conveyed in 0.05-, 0.10-, 0.20-m internal diameter, 20-m tall steel risers. Particle velocities derived from the pressure drop data were used to develop an equation of motion that includes terms for pipe diameter, terminal velocity, coefficient of restitution, and particle shape. The best data fit was achieved using the actual gas density and the actual gas velocity adjusted for voidage. Adjusting the terminal velocity for voidage, an approach recommended by many investigators, did not improve the fit for reasons identified by the present research. Using the equation of motion, particle velocities were predicted and used to calculate total pressure drops that are within ±15% of the measured values. The calculated values also produce the characteristic trough-shaped total pressure drop curves allowing the minimum pressure drop gas velocity to be determined without recourse to a separate correlation. A comparison with other studies using shorter risers indicates that data from these studies likely include acceleration effects. A separate study will investigate this observation further.

Due to the non-linear nature of most of the loads, there is a greater demand for reactive power in the distribution network. Further, it wasted high energy on distribution and dropped the bus voltages. The integration of the distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM) mechanism into the power distribution sector increases load capacity, compensates reactive power, and reduces power losses while enhancing the voltage profile and stability. This research utilized the improved bacterial foraging search algorithm (IBFA) for the optimum sizing and placement of the DSTATCOM in the distribution sector to minimize power losses and improve voltage stability and profile. The power flow model is developed using the back-forward load flow technique. The outputs obtained are compared with those from the conventional bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA) and the base case scenario. The optimum size of DSTATCOM computed is 3697.3kVAr with the optimal placement at bus 19. The percentage drop in power losses obtained with the installation of DSTATCOM using an improved bacterial search algorithm (IBFA) is 49.021% as compared to the base case scenario. Similarly, the IBFA approach resulted in a 12.8% enhancement in voltage stability and a 3.32% improvement in voltage profile as compared to the base case scenario. The results obtained clearly indicate the efficiency and applicability of the applied IBFA technique to the optimum placing and sizing of DSTATCOM in the radial power distribution sector for minimizing power loss and improving the voltage profile and stability.

Water-based fire extinguishing agent is the main means to deal with smoldering fires. However, due to the hydrophobic properties of the particle surface, the porous medium channel provide resistance and slow down the extinguishing agent flow during the downward permeation process. To promote the liquid permeation process in such porous media, this work studied liquid imbibition process and analyzed the oscillating and attenuating process of liquid level in capillary channel by theoretical, experimental, and numerical methods. An empirical mathematical equation was proposed to describe the oscillating process, and the effects of the capillary diameter and contact angle parameters on the transportation process were analyzed. Based on this, the “relay-mode” was proposed to promote the liquid transportation forward. Finally, the transient simulation results of liquid permeation in coal stacks showed when the liquid flowed through the channel with changed diameter from large to small ones, the transportation distance was several times longer than that through the unidiameter ones. The trend of liquid “relay-mode” in capillaries can be used to promote the permeation in granular materials porous media stacks. The relevant results also provide new thoughts to develop the water-based fire extinguishing agents and then improve the firefighting efficiency of deep-seated fire in porous media stacks.

The flow and thermal breakthrough phenomenon in a forced external circulation standing column well (FECSCW) directly affects heat transfer efficiency and load-carrying capacity. A numerical model for FECSCW is developed to analyze the migration of the temperature and velocity front under the flow and thermal breakthrough. The results indicated that thermal breakthrough began after simulation running 2.5 min and was completely formed after 12 min. The inlet water, which directly entered the production well without heat exchange with the aquifer, accounted for 12.8%. When the porosity of the backfill material decreased from 0.35 to 0, the coefficient of performance (COP) of the heat pump unit increased by 1.6% on average, and the thermal breakthrough strength decreased by an average of 45.3% within 25 min. Where seepage velocity near the well wall was greater than 1 × 10−3 m•s−1, faster velocity front migration was observed, while the migration advantage of the temperature front was more prominent outside of this region. Through quantitative analysis of flow and thermal breakthrough, temperature and velocity front migration, and COP change of heat pump unit, theoretical suggestions were provided for the thermal transfer mechanism near the thermal well wall. The extended research in this study can be applied to the design and optimization of forced external circulation standing column well system.

The service life of refractory brick in the slag tapping hole of the entrained flow gasifier was significantly lower than that in other locations. It was critically important to study the corrosion mechanism of refractory brick in the slag tapping hole for guiding industrial production. Considering the complex flow field in the slag tapping hole, the influence of gas velocity and temperature fluctuation on the service life of refractory brick was investigated in this study. The results showed that the slag flow characteristics periodically changed with the gas temperature and velocity fluctuations. The brick corrosion rate increased with the decrease of fluctuation frequency. Compared with the gas-phase velocity fluctuation, the gas-phase temperature fluctuation had a more significant influence on the brick corrosion rate. When the fluctuation frequency was 0.01 Hz and the gas temperature fluctuation amplitude was 200 K, the corrosion rate of refractory bricks increased by 25%. It could be concluded that the fluctuation of gas-phase temperature was the main cause for the low service life of refractory bricks in the tapping hole.

A three-dimensional nonhydrostatic coastal model SUNTANS is used to study hyperpycnal plumes on sloping continental shelves with idealized domain setup. The study aims to examine the nonhydrostatic effect of the plunging hyperpycnal plume and the associated flow structures on different shelf slopes. The unstructured triangular grid in SUNTANS allows for local refinement of the grid size for regions in which the flow varies abruptly, while retaining low-cost computation using the coarse grid resolution for regions in which the flow is more uniform. These nonhydrostatic simulations reveal detailed three-dimensional flow structures in both transient and steady states. Via comparison with the hydrostatic simulation, we show that the nonhydrostatic effect is particularly important before plunging, when the plume is subject to significant changes in both the along-shore and vertical directions. After plunging, where the plume becomes an undercurrent that is more spatially uniform, little difference is found between the hydrostatic and nonhydrostatic simulations in the present gentle- and mild-slope cases. A grid-dependence study shows that the nonhydrostatic effect can be seen only when the grid resolution is sufficiently fine that the calculation is not overly diffusive. A depth-integrated momentum budget analysis is then conducted to show that the flow convergence due to plunging is an important factor in the three-dimensional flow structures. Moreover, it shows that the nonhydrostatic effect becomes more important as the slope increases, and in the steep-slope case, neglect of transport of the vertical momentum during plunging in the hydrostatic case further leads to an erroneous prediction for the undercurrent.

Research on aircraft bleed air systems has been performed at Ryerson University for the last eight years. During this time, the requirements of the test apparatus have been constantly expanding. This thesis work aims at developing a new reconfigurable rig that supports current and future research on aircraft bleed air control systems and takes advantage of lessons learned from previous test rigs. The new rig consists of two temperature control channels in a parallel arrangement to allow for flow sharing control, and a load tank with variable exhaust. Beyond the development of the test rig, research has been performed to improve mass flow measurement based on signals from traditional thermal mass flow and pressure sensors. The proposed method utilized these redundant means of indicating flow to obtain fast and accurate flow measurement through the use of a dynamically weighted average. This method has been experimentally investigated using the test rig.

Multidimensional exploratory techniques, such as the Principal Component Analysis (PCA), have been used to analyze long-term changes in the fl ow regime and quality of water of the lowland dam reservoir Turawa (south-west Poland) in the catchment of the Mała Panew river (a tributary of the Odra). The paper proves that during the period of 1998–2016 the Turawa reservoir was equalizing the river’s water fl ow. Moreover, various physicochemical water quality indicators were analyzed at three measurement points (at the tributary’s mouth into the reservoir, in the reservoir itself and at the outfl ow from the reservoir). The water quality assessment was performed by analyzing physicochemical indicators such as water temperature, TSS, pH, dissolved oxygen, BOD5, NH4 +, NO3 -, NO2 -, N, PO4 3-, P, electrolytic conductivity, DS, SO4 2- and Cl-. Furthermore, the correlations between all these water quality indicators were analyzed statistically at each measurement point, at the statistical signifi cance level of p ≤ 0.05. PCA was used to determine the structures between these water quality variables at each measurement point. As a result, a theoretical model was obtained that describes the regularities in the relationships between the indicators. PCA has shown that biogenic indicators have the strongest infl uence on the water quality in the Mała Panew. Lastly, the differences between the averages of the water quality indicators of the infl owing and of the outfl owing water were considered and their signifi cance was analyzed. PCA unveiled structure and complexity of interconnections between river fl ow and water quality. The paper shows that such statistical methods can be valuable tools for developing suitable water management strategies for the catchment and the reservoir itself.

With the continuous development of deep oil and gas, minerals, geothermal resources, and other resources, there are increasingly more stringent requirements for equipment. In particular, the ultra-high-pressure dynamic seals of deep mining device need to be developed. Therefore, considering the use of dynamic seals in unique deep mining environments, an ultra-high-pressure rotating combined dynamic seal was designed and developed and its sealing performance was experimentally measured and analyzed. The results show that the experimental device can operate stably under a pressure of up to 150 MPa and a rotating speed of 76 r/min, and can also operate normally under a rotating speed of up to 140 r/min and a sealing pressure of 120 MPa. During the operation of the ultra-high-pressure rotating combined dynamic seal, the sealing ring does not show obvious damage, which vouches for its sealing performance. No leakage of flow and pressure was detected in the all seal structures within the sealing pressure range of 0∼150 MPa. Therefore, the dynamic sealing performance of the device is intact under ultra-high-pressure conditions and can be applied in deep mining environments at a certain depth. The research and development of this device can aid future deep energy exploration and exploitation.

The pressure drop prediction of wet gas across single-orifice plate in horizontal pipes had been solved satisfactorily under an annular-mist flow in the upstream of orifice plates. However, this pressure drop prediction is still not clearly determined when the upstream is in an intermittent flow or stratified flow, which is corresponding to a region of low FrG (gas phase Froude number) in the flow pattern map of wet gases. In this study, the wet gas pressure drop across a single-orifice plate was experimentally investigated in the low FrG region. By the experiment, the flow pattern transition in the downstream of single-orifice plates, as well as the effects of FrG and FrL (liquid phase Froude number) on ΦG (gas phase multiplier), were determined and compared when the upstream is in the flow pattern transition and the stratified flow region, respectively. Prediction performances were examined on the available pressure drop models. It was found that no model could be capable of jointly predicting the wet gas pressure drop in the low FrG region with an acceptable accuracy. With a new method of correlating FrG and FrL simultaneously, new correlations were proposed for the low FrG region. Among which the modified Chisholm model shows the best prediction accuracies, with the prediction deviations of ΦG being within 7% and 3% when the upstream is in flow pattern transition and stratified flow region, respectively.

Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) are used in landfill applications because of their high deformation resistance and excellent self-healing ability. In the present study, air and hydraulic flow characteristics of natural bentonite based GCL (GCL-N) and polymer amended bentonite based GCL (GCL-A) were assessed using air permeability and hydraulic conductivity measurements. The airflow characteristics of GCLs were studied at various apparent degrees of saturation (Sa) and corresponding suction using a custom-designed air permeability test setup. The effect of desiccation on the airflow characteristics of GCL-A was also examined. Further, hydraulic flow characteristics of virgin and desiccated-rehydrated GCLs were assessed using a flexible wall permeameter. The water absorption capacity of GCL-A is relatively higher than GCL-N, irrespective of the stress state. For any chosen Sa, air permeability of GCL-A is lower than GCL-N. Moreover, with the decrease in the suction from 2500 kPa to 1000 kPa, the air permeability of virgin GCL-A has reduced from 9 × 10−12 m2 to 3.57 × 10−16 m2 while the desiccated-rehydrated GCL-A has reduced from 8.86 × 10−11 m2 to 1.9 × 10−13 m2. The hydraulic conductivity of GCL-A is two orders of magnitude less than GCL-N, which shows the better performance of GCL made with amended bentonite.

Runoff coefficient (C) values are tabulated and enshrined in hydrological engineering. These values are considered to be constant although they may not correspond to reality. In the same catchment, they may vary according to intensity, temporal and spatial distribution of precipitation events, humidity conditions, soil and land use. This study aimed to analyze extreme events of precipitation and their corresponding flows to obtain experimental runoff coefficients (C) and compare them with the tabulated values. The study was conducted in five experimental catchments in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, with different land uses. The runoff coefficients (C) were obtained from the analysis of hydrograms and using a digital filter, which made it possible to separate the direct runoff from the total flow. We observed a different variation in runoff coefficient values between catchments compared to those obtained from the tables. The runoff coefficients had a high correlation with land use. In catchments with original vegetation cover, such as Cerrado and forest, they varied little among the events analyzed, unlike the catchments where land use is diversified, with predominantly agricultural and urban occupation.

A velocity formula is proposed for flow over a mobile sediment bed induced by velocity-skewed waves and current. The formula is obtained by a separation of waves and current velocities and requires seven free variables related to free stream velocity and sediment characteristics. The formula includes two parts: (1) a wave part consisting of the free stream velocity and defect function, which considers phase lead, wave boundary layer thickness, and mobile bed level, and (2) a current part, which changes the wave part through the boundary layer thickness and mobile bed level, influenced by wave eddy viscosity. The wave part is superior to the current part such that the boundary layer characteristics are mainly determined by the waves. The wave process is divided into four quarter stages to model the asymmetries of parameters in velocity and acceleration. Under velocity-skewed waves and current conditions, velocity asymmetry and residual velocity are accounted for in the formula, especially the offshore residual velocity with a large phase lag and mobile bed effect with a small phase lag. Phase lead is shown to be non-constant in velocity-skewed oscillatory sheet flow and corresponds to an extra offshore residual velocity.

Gas–solid flow regime in a novel multistage circulating fluidized bed is investigated in this study. Pressure fluctuations are first sampled from gas–solid flow systems and then are analyzed through frequency and time-frequency domain methods including power spectrum and Hilbert–Huang transform. According to the flow characteristics obtained from pressure fluctuations, it is found that the gas–solid motions in the multistage circulating fluidized bed exhibit two dominant motion peaks in low and high frequencies. Moreover, gas-cluster motions become intensive for the multistage circulating fluidized bed in comparison with the fast bed. Unlike the traditional methods, the fuzzy C-means clustering method is introduced to objectively identify flow regime in the multistage circulating fluidized bed on the basis of the flow characteristics extracted from bubbling, turbulent, fast, and multistage fluidized beds. The identification accuracy of fuzzy C-means clustering method is first verified. The identification results show that the flow regime in the multistage circulating fluidized bed is in the scope of fast flow regime under examined conditions. Moreover, the results indicate that the consistency of flow regime between two enlarged sections exists. In addition, the transition onset of fast flow regime in the multistage circulating fluidized bed is higher than that in the fast bed.

Cleveland Clinic is developing a continuous-flow total artificial heart (CFTAH). This novel design operates without valves and is suspended both axially and radially through the balancing of the magnetic and hydrodynamic forces. A series of long-term animal studies with no anticoagulation demonstrated good biocompatibility, without any thromboemboli or infarctions in the organs. However, we observed varying degrees of thrombus attached to the right impeller blades following device explant. No thrombus was found attached to the left impeller blades. The goals for this study were: (1) to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to gain insight into the differences in the flow fields surrounding both impellers, and (2) to leverage that knowledge in identifying an improved next-generation right impeller design that could reduce the potential for thrombus formation. Transient CFD simulations of the CFTAH at a blood flow rate and impeller rotational speed mimicking in vivo conditions revealed significant blade tip-induced flow separation and clustered regions of low wall shear stress near the right impeller that were not present for the left impeller. Numerous right impeller design variations were modeled, including changes to the impeller cone angle, number of blades, blade pattern, blade shape, and inlet housing design. The preferred, next-generation right impeller design incorporated a steeper cone angle, a primary/splitter blade design similar to the left impeller, and an increased blade curvature to better align the incoming flow with the impeller blade tips. The next-generation impeller design reduced both the extent of low shear regions near the right impeller surface and flow separation from the blade leading edges, while maintaining the desired hydraulic performance of the original CFTAH design.

Phase change dynamics under the rotational surface effects, area expansion and nanoparticle loading in the base fluid are explored for forced convective flow of hybrid nanofluid in a phase change packed bed installed cylindrical reactor. The study is performed with finite element method for different parameters of rotational Reynolds number, fluid stream Reynolds number and concentration of nanoparticle. The hybrid nanofluid properties are based on experimental data for binary particle of Al2O3-TiO2 in 40 % ethylene–glycol. Complete phase transition time is estimated with ANFIS based model. The recirculation zone due to the area expansion within the phase change installed region is controlled by the complex interactions between the forced flow, rotation of the surface and nanoparticle amount. Higher values of Reynolds number and nanoparticle concentration result in fast phase change process at rotational Reynolds number of 0 while the effects become reverse in the presence of rotations. Complete phase transition time reduces by about 49 % and 10.5 % at the highest Reynolds number and at the highest concentration in the absence of rotation while it is increased by about 88 % and 6.5 % when rotational effects are considered at the highest rotational speed. When only rotational effects are considered, phase change process completion time reduces by about 60 % at the highest speed.

The destructive nature of debris flows is mainly caused by flow bulking from entrainment of an erodible channel bed. To arrest these flows, multiple flexible barriers are commonly installed along the predicted flow path. Despite the importance of an erodible bed, its effects are generally ignored when designing barriers. In this study, three unique experiments were carried out in a 28 m long flume to investigate the impact of a debris flow on both single and dual flexible barriers installed in a channel with a 6 m long erodible soil bed. Initial debris volumes of 2.5 and 6 m3 were modelled. For the test setting adopted, a small upstream flexible barrier before the erodible bed separates the flow into several surges via overflow. The smaller surges reduce bed entrainment by 70% and impact force on the terminal barrier by 94% compared to the case without an upstream flexible barrier. However, debris overflowing the deformed flexible upstream barrier induces a centrifugal force that results in a dynamic pressure coefficient that is up to 2.2 times higher than those recommended in guidelines. This suggests that although compact upstream flexible barriers can be effective for controlling bed entrainment, they should be carefully designed to withstand higher impact forces.
