Terrestrial arthropod groups, including insects, spiders, and millipedes, represent an important food resource for primates. However, species consumed and patterns and rates of arthropod-related feeding for most frugivorous primates are still poorly known. We examined stomach contents of 178 Amazonian primate specimens of nine genera and three families obtained from community-based collections voluntarily donated by subsistence hunters. Based on our results, we assessed whether consumption patterns followed the expected negative relationship between arthropod ingestion and body size as postulated in the Jarman-Bell and Kay models. We identified 12 consumed arthropod taxa, including insects (beetles, grasshoppers, ants, flies, caterpillars, praying mantises, and others), spiders and millipedes. Medium and large-bodied primates consumed a greater diversity (measured by Simpson’s diversity index) and richness of arthropods, but differed in terms of composition of taxa consumed. Cacajao, Sapajus and Cebus consumed proportionally more Orthoptera and Coleoptera compared to the other primate genera analyzed. We did not find significant correlations between richness and diversity of arthropods consumed and primate body mass. There was a slight tendency for the decrease in the relative content of arthropods in the diet with increased body mass in medium and large primates, which does not provide full support for the Jarman-Bell and Kay models. The study of arthropod consumption by arboreal primates in the wild remains challenging. Our study suggests that arthropods supply essential nutrients for frugivorous primates, and provides an alternative method to analyse faunal consumption patterns in primates. RESUMO Grupos de artrópodes terrestres, incluindo insetos, aranhas e milípedes, representam um importante recurso alimentar para muitos primatas. Porém, espécies consumidas e padrões de consumo de artrópodes ainda são pouco conhecidos para a maioria dos primatas frugívoros. Nós examinamos o conteúdo estomacal de 178 espécimes de primatas amazônicos, de nove gêneros e três famílias, provenientes de coletas de base comunitária, doados voluntariamente por caçadores de subsistência. Com base em nossos resultados, avaliamos se os padrões de consumo seguem a relação negativa esperada em relação ao tamanho corporal, conforme postulado nos modelos de Jarman-Bell e Kay. Identificamos 12 taxa de artrópodes consumidos, incluindo insetos (besouros, gafanhotos, formigas, moscas, lagartas, louva-a-deuses, entre outros), aranhas e milípedes. Primatas de médio e grande porte consumiram maior diversidade (medida pelo índice de diversidade de Simpson) e riqueza de artrópodes, mas difeririam na composição dos taxa consumidos. Cacajao, Sapajus e Cebus consumiram proporcionalmente mais Orthoptera e Coleoptera que os outros gêneros analizados. Não encontramos correlações significativas entre riqueza ou diversidade de artrópodes consumidos e a massa corporal dos primatas. Houve uma leve tendência de diminuição no conteúdo relativo de artrópodes na dieta com o aumento da massa corporal de primatas médios e grandes, o que não fornece suporte completo para os modelos de Jarman-Bell e de Kay. O estudo do consumo de artrópodes por primatas arborícolas na natureza continua sendo desafiador. Nosso estudo sugere que os artrópodes fornecem nutrientes essenciais para primatas frugívoros, e apresenta um método alternativo para estudar padrões de consumo de fauna por primatas.

Investigation of the biochemical and molecular changes during rooting in woody species can reveal how specific molecules are involved in adventitious root (AR) induction. We investigated the effects of indole butyric acid (IBA) and inhibitors of polar auxin transport and auxin signaling on ex vitro rooting of micropropagated shoots of Cedrela fissilis and evaluated the proteomic profile and endogenous contents of indole acetic acid (IAA) during AR initiation. We observed that exogenous IBA was not necessary for ex vitro rooting, and root induction was significantly reduced by auxin signaling (p-chlorophenoxyisobutyric acid—PCIB) and polar auxin transport (triiodobenzoic acid—TIBA) inhibitors. The presence of meristematic cells and the formation of meristematic centers in the base of shoot cuttings at 3 days of rooting are necessary for AR formation. The accumulation of cell division- and auxin-related proteins and the presence of unique proteins related to cell wall modification in shoot cuttings at 3 days of rooting were associated with higher IAA contents and AR initiation. In addition, an accumulation of proteins related to dephosphorylation, glycolytic and tricarboxylic acid cycle pathways and a reduction in the accumulation of proteins from isoflavonoid metabolism were associated with the promotion of AR initiation. These results show the relevance of these proteins for AR initiation in this species. This is the first study showing the involvement of protein accumulation and endogenous IAA contents in adventitious rooting initiation in C. fissilis, an easily rooted endangered woody species from the Brazilian rainforest. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES The ecological economy is an opportunity to assess the “climate regulating ecosystem goods and services” of the Atlantic Forest's native forests, and the carbon stocks in these native forests can be treated as a good indicator of the quality of ecosystem services as a mechanism for control and mitigation in preservation and conservation. The main objective is the evaluation of the relationship between species diversity and biomass, as well as the monetary quantification of the carbon stock in a remnant plant community of the Atlantic Forest in Sergipe. Three forests with different regeneration processes were analyzed, considering the phytosociological parameters of richness and biomass. Sampling of 30 randomly distributed plots of 10x10 m2 was used to estimate the aboveground and belowground carbon stocks from allometric equations. The results, however, refuted the hypothesis of correlation between richness and carbon stock. The results were significant for the differences in biomass between the forests, and showed us that the degrees of conservation of these environments influenced the greater biomass. Based on the carbon stock analysis, he estimated an average of 30.09 tons per hectare and an estimated average value of 5.747.40 reais/hectares in carbon credits. In this study, we conclude that the increase in species diversity or mature forests there is no increase in their biomass, but in areas in more advanced succession there was an increase in the carbon stock biomass, although it did not show high richness. We argue that the idea of a sustainable market brings other aspects and incentives for behavioral change with the possibility of including other ecosystem services associated with biodiversity and other functions such as water, pollination, production of native seeds and including cultural services. A economia ecológica é uma oportunidade de avaliar os “bens e serviços ecossistêmicos de regulação do clima” das florestas nativas da Mata Atlântica, e, os estoques de carbono nestas florestas nativas podem ser tratados como um bom indicador de qualidade de serviços ecossistêmicos como mecanismo de controle e mitigação na preservação e conservação. O objetivo central é a avaliação da relação entre diversidade de espécies e biomassa, bem como a quantificação monetária do estoque de carbono em comunidade vegetal remanescente de Mata Atlântica em Sergipe. Foram analisados três bosques com diferentes processos de regeneração, considerando os parâmetros fitossociológicos de riqueza e biomassa. Foram utilizadas a amostragem de 30 parcelas de 10x10 m2 distribuídas aleatoriamente para estimar os estoques de carbono acima da superfície e abaixo do solo a partir de equações alométricas. Os resultados, no entanto, refutaram a hipótese de correlação entre riqueza e estoque de carbono. Os resultados foram significativos para as diferenças de biomassa entre os bosques, e nos mostraram que os graus de conservação desses ambientes influenciaram a maior biomassa. A partir da análise do estoque de carbono estimou um média de 30,09 toneladas por hectare e valor médio estimado 5.747,40 reais/hectares em créditos carbono. Neste estudo, concluímos o aumento da diversidade de espécie ou florestas maduras não há incremento em sua biomassa, porem em áreas em sucessão mais avançadas houve aumento na biomassa estoque de carbono, embora não tenha apresentado alta riqueza. Discutimos que a ideia de mercado sustentável, traz outros aspectos e incentivos para a mudança comportamental com possibilidade de inclusão de outros serviços ecossistêmicos associado a biodiversidade e outras funções como a água, polinização, produção de sementes nativas e incluir os serviços culturais. Dentre elas, as florestas sazonais desempenham um papel-chave como sumidouro sazonal de carbono, modulado por temperatura e precipitação. Apesar disto, pouco se sabe sobre como a variabilidade climática interanual afeta o crescimento e a estrutura do lenho das árvores e como as respostas ao crescimento climático variam entre os gradientes de chuva nessas florestas. Aqui nós avaliamos as mudanças na sensibilidade climática do crescimento de árvores, diversos traços químico-físicos da madeira dentro de classes diamétricas de tamanho (SCI) de 8 cm, bem como construímos projeções de crescimento e rendimento futuro do lenho após ciclos de corte programados ao longo de um gradiente ambiental de tipos de vegetação tropical sazonalmente seca (floresta sempre verde – savana – floresta seca) no Nordeste do Brasil, usando espécies congenéricas de dois gêneros neotropicais comuns: Aspidosperma e Handroanthus. Construímos cronologias de largura de anéis de árvores para cada combinação de espécies × tipo de floresta e exploramos como a variabilidade de crescimento se correlacionava com fatores climáticos locais (precipitação, temperatura) e globais (El Niño Oscilação Sul - ENOS). Também avaliamos como a sensibilidade do crescimento ao clima e a presença de desvios de crescimento variaram ao longo do gradiente. Através das cronologias calculamos o SCI e quantificamos suas mudanças na eficiência no uso da água (iEUA) ao longo do tempo, relação com estrutura e química do lenho, além das diferenças entre tipos florestais distintos. Calculamos ainda aspectos referentes ao diâmetro cumulativo, a trajetória de crescimento das árvores ao longo do gradiente e seu rendimento após dois ciclos de corte. Nossos resultados revelam um efeito dominante da precipitação no crescimento das árvores em florestas tropicais sazonalmente secas e sugerem que ao longo do gradiente, as florestas secas são as mais sensíveis ao déficit hídrico. A relação negativa de temperatura e ENOS com o crescimento foram semelhantes entre os locais, no entanto, desvios negativos de crescimento foram observados principalmente nas espécies de floresta seca. Em contrapartida, temperatura e ENOS influenciaram positivamente a iEUA, que aumentou ao longo do tempo em todas as florestas sazonais, independentemente do tipo florestal e não gerou efeitos sobre o crescimento. Na floresta seca, a variação na iEUA de A. multiflorum teve relação significativa com a frequência dos elementos de vaso no xilema e a concentração de Fe, S e K/Ca, mostrando a importância da utilização de mais de uma estratégia para suportar o estresse hídrico em florestas secas. Neste sentido, as espécies de matas secas foram as que apresentaram menor crescimento em relação as suas congêneres de outros tipos florestais, com limites de extração distintos entre as espécies congêneres de Aspidosperma e Handroanthus. Apenas A. castroanum (floresta sempre verde), apresentou rendimento próximo ao considerável sustentável (~80%), enquanto as demais espécies tiveram um rendimento médio baixo, entre 10-30%. Esses resultados destacam a importância de entender a sensibilidade climática de diferentes florestas tropicais. Compreender o impacto da escassez hídrica na produtividade de florestas sazonais e suas estratégias para suportá-la podem auxiliar no entendimento do ciclo de carbono futuro e servir de base para medidas de mitigação das mudanças no clima. Estas diferenças mostram que o tipo de manejo florestal deve atender às variações socioambientais ao longo de gradientes florestais e que as matas secas são as que mais demoram a se recuperar após o manejo. Esse entendimento é fundamental para prever a dinâmica do carbono em regiões tropicais, e diferenças de sensibilidade devem ser consideradas ao priorizar medidas de conservação de florestas tópicas sazonalmente secas Abstract: Tropical forests are important providers of ecosystem services and climate regulators. Among them, seasonal forests play a key role as a seasonal carbon sink, modulated by temperature and precipitation. Despite this, little is known about how interannual climate variability affects tree growth and wood structure and how climate growth responses vary across rainfall gradients in these forests. Here we evaluated changes in climate sensitivity of tree growth, various chemical-physical wood traits within 8 cm diameter size classes (SCI), as well as constructed projections of future wood growth and yield after programmed cutting cycles along an environmental gradient of seasonally dry tropical vegetation types (evergreen forest – savannah – dry forest) in Northeast Brazil, using congeneric species from two common Neotropical genera: Aspidosperma and Handroanthus. We constructed tree ring width chronologies for each combination of species × forest type and explored how growth variability correlated with local (precipitation, temperature) and global (El Niño Southern Oscillation - ENSO) climatic factors. We also evaluated how the sensitivity of growth to climate and the presence of growth deviations varied along the gradient. Through the chronologies we calculated the SCI and quantified its changes in the water use efficiency (iWUE) over time, relationship with wood structure and chemistry, in addition to the differences between different forest types. We also calculated aspects related to the cumulative diameter, the growth trajectory of the trees along the gradient and their yield after two cutting cycles. Our results reveal a dominant effect of precipitation on tree growth in seasonally dry tropical forests and suggest that along the gradient, dry forests are the most sensitive to water deficit. The negative relationship of temperature and ENSO with growth were similar between sites, however, negative growth deviations were observed mainly in dry forest species. In contrast, temperature and ENSO positively influenced iWUE, which increased over time in all seasonal forests, regardless of forest type, and had no effect on growth. In the dry forest, the variation in the iWUE of A. multiflorum was significantly related to the frequency of vessel elements in the xylem and the concentration of Fe, S and K/Ca, showing the importance of using more than one strategy to withstand stress. water in dry forests. In this sense, the dry forest species showed the lowest growth in relation to their congeners of other forest types, with different extraction limits between the congeners of Aspidosperma and Handroanthus. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2022-03-15 Secondary forests (SFs) growing on previously cleared land could be a low-cost climate change mitigation strategy due to their potential to sequester CO2. However, given widespread changes in climate and land-use in the Amazon in the past 20 years, it is not clear whether current rates of carbon uptake by SFs reflect estimates based on dividing the carbon stock by the estimated age of the forest. This is important, as differences between methodological approaches could lead to important discrepancies in estimates of carbon accumulation. Furthermore, we know little about how carbon uptake rates of secondary forests vary across some of the most deforested regions of the Amazon, where reforestation actions are most needed. Here, we compare the rates of carbon accumulation estimated over the lifetime of a stand (by stand age) with the contemporary rates estimated by recensus data, based on 28 permanent SFs plots distributed across four regions. Then, we compare how carbon uptakes rates vary across regions and how they compare to previous studies. The average rates of contemporary (1.23 ± 0.57 Mg C ha−1 yr−1) and lifetime (1.14 ± 0.63 Mg C ha−1 yr−1) carbon accumulation were strongly correlated (r = 0.78) and similar between regions. Overall, our carbon accumulation rates were much lower than other estimates of Amazonian SFs, which suggests that regions with the greatest opportunities for large-scale implementation of SFs have some of the slowest rates of carbon accumulation. Contrary to predictions from chronosequence analysis, the lack of difference between lifetime and contemporary rates of carbon accumulation suggests forests are maintaining a consistent rate of growth in the first decades after abandonment. These results—combined with the high rates of ongoing environmental change - highlight the importance of continuing to monitor the rate of carbon accumulation in secondary forests. This is necessary to support the implementation and monitoring of large-scale passive restoration in the highly-deforested Amazon. Tropical forests are converted at an alarming rate for agricultural use and pastureland, but also regrow naturally through secondary succession. For successful forest restoration, it is essential to understand the mechanisms of secondary succession. These mechanisms may vary across forest types, but analyses across broad spatial scales are lacking. Here, we analyse forest recovery using 1,403 plots that differ in age since agricultural abandonment from 50 sites across the Neotropics. We analyse changes in community composition using species-specific stem wood density (WD), which is a key trait for plant growth, survival and forest carbon storage. In wet forest, succession proceeds from low towards high community WD (acquisitive towards conservative trait values), in line with standard successional theory. However, in dry forest, succession proceeds from high towards low community WD (conservative towards acquisitive trait values), probably because high WD reflects drought tolerance in harsh early successional environments. Dry season intensity drives WD recovery by influencing the start and trajectory of succession, resulting in convergence of the community WD over time as vegetation cover builds up. These ecological insights can be used to improve species selection for reforestation. Reforestation species selected to establish a first protective canopy layer should, among other criteria, ideally have a similar WD to the early successional communities that dominate under the prevailing macroclimatic conditions.

This study describes the composition and provenance of dense bodies or structures present in uncharred plant vestiges recovered at Monte Castelo (6000–700 cal. AP-SW Amazonia). It aimed to disclose some aspects of this plant remains’ interactions with the sedimentary matrix of the site over the 200 years (at least) since its initial deposit, from the point of view of the soft tissue mineralization processes. Two specimens were examined using XFCT, X-ray MicroCT, and SEM-EDS techniques to reveal the presence and distribution of Ca, K, Mn, Fe, Ti, Si, S, Cu, Br, Rb, Sr, Zn, and Zr. These attributes were integrated with compositional ED-XRF and XRD measured data from the sedimentary substrate. Results show that some of the chemical elements present in solid bodies and anatomical structures of the plant remains refer to the sedimentary environment, while others have an endogenous origin. These include mainly Rb and Br, which were interpreted as the result of degradation processes of the internal tissues, where they are mainly present. Except Sr and Zr, a portion of all the other elements entered and disperse into the sample structures from the sedimentary substrate. Its presence is attributable to mechanisms such as attachment, diffusion and impregnation through the outermost tissues, where they are mostly concentrated. The composition of most of the dense bodies consists of both endogenous and exogenous elements.

Spreng foi conduzido em três fragmentos (1,6; 6,4 e 9,9 ha) da Floresta Atlântica, no sudeste do Brasil, entre 1996 e 1999. Durante o período de estudo, os fragmentos foram atingidos por um incêndio antrópico que devastou parte da reserva na qual estão incluídos. o número de folhas e o comprimento da raquis da folha mais recentemente expandida foram medidos para todas as palmeiras encontradas em duas transecções perpendiculares de 10m de largura cruzando os fragmentos de borda a borda. Os seguintes aspectos da ecologia de populações da espécie foram estudados: 1) Caracterização de estádios ontogenéticos. Cinco estádios ontogenéticos foram distinguidos: Plântulas encontravam-se ligadas a restos seminais geralmente enterrados e apresentavam folhas inteiras; Juvenis apresentavam segmentação incompleta do limbo foliar. Indivíduos não reprodutivos com folhas pinatissectas foram divididos morfometricamente em dois grupos: os hnaturos, com menor número de folhas e comprimento da folha mais jovem menor e altamente variável, e os Virgens, com mais e maiores folhas, mas com comprimento da folha mais jovem mais constante. O tamanho crítico de copa para o qual imaturos e virgens puderam ser identificados variaram de acordo com o fragmento e o ano. Palmeiras Reprodutivas apresentavam estruturas reprodutivas. 2) Dinâmica da hierarquia de tamanhos. Não foram encontradas evidências consistentes de dependência da densidade no tamanho dos indivíduos das populações estudadas, avaliados através de analises de regressão entre variáveis ligadas ao tamanho da copa e a densidade das parcelas. Tanto para o número de folhas quanto para o comprimento da raquis da folha mais nova em todas as populações, diferenças de tamanho entre palmeiras em uma mesma categoria ontogenética tenderam a diminuir ao longo do processo de maturação da espécie. Palmeiras jovens foram danificadas heterogeneamente pelo fogo, enquanto a maioria das palmeiras imaturas tiveram 50 - 75% de sua copa destruída, e os adultos mostraram uma grande proporção de plantas sem nenhum sinal de destruição da copa. Dezoito meses após o incêndio os indivíduos tenderam a apresentar uma menor desigualdade em relação ao número de folhas entre categorias ontogenéticas em todos os fragmentos. Sugerimos que a heterogeneidade ambienta!, poderia agir como filtros ambientais selecionando os indivíduos que são recrutados para a categoria imatura. Estes indivíduos apresentariam crescimento e sobrevivência maiores e tamanhos menos desiguais: 3) Distribuirão espacial de estádios ontogenéticos. As palmeiras estavam significativamente agregadas em várias escalas, mas uma redução no grau de agregação ocorreu de plântulas para adultos em todos os fragmentos. o fogo aumentou temporariamente o grau de agregação dos jovens. Estádios ontogenéticos não foram encontrados nas mesmas parcelas com maior freqüência do que esperado ao acaso na maioria dos casos, mas uma associação positiva significativa de reprodutivos em diferentes anos foi encontrada em dois fragmentos. A distribuirão das palmeiras entre setores dos fragmentos variou de acordo com o estádio, fragmento e o ano, mas foi consistente no tempo sendo pouco afetado pelo fogo. Não foi encontrada uma relação geral entre a densidade de palmeiras e a distância da borda do fragmento, mas sim uma resposta complexa e esporádica. Sugerimos que a dispersão de sementes a curta distância por roedores pode resultar em agregados discretos e de baixa densidade de palmeiras jovens dissociados de plantas reprodutivas e que estádios posteriores ficam restritos a sítios mais abertos, perturbados e sujeitos ao fogo: 4) Demografia. Em todos os anos a densidade de palmeiras no fragmento de tamanho intermediário (750 - 900 palmeiras ha-l) foi significativamente maior e apresentou maio amplitude do que nos outros fragmentos (130 - 200 palmeiras ha-l e 120 - 150 palmeiras ha l).A estrutura de estádios das populações variou com o fragmento e o ano, mas em geral os estádios posteriores foram mais abundantes do que os iniciais. A população no fragmento mais denso estava concentrada em seu setor mais perturbado. Tanto a taxa de crescimento populacional (I..) projetada quanto a observada foram significativamente maiores do que a unidade no menor fragmento mas similar á unidade no fragmento maior. Taxas de crescimento populacional baseadas em modelos matriciais foram mais sensíveis a mudanças na sobrevivência de plântulas, virgens e imaturos, e relativamente insensíveis a mudanças no crescimento e fecundidade. Depois do fogo, as populações permaneceram estáveis em todos os fragmentos exceto no de tamanho intermediário, onde uma tendência decrescente foi observada. A estrutura de estádios de todas as populações foi marcadamente alterada pelo fogo através da concentração da maioria dos indivíduos no estádio imaturo, de tamanho intermediário, mas esta tendência foi parcialmente revertida no segundo ano após o incêndio. Estes resultados poderiam indicar que a habilidade de rebrota de A. humilis, juntamente com sua tendência de persistir e crescer em áreas perturbadas promovem o crescimento populacional em fragmentos florestais pequenos e impactados, mas este crescimento pode ser revertido pelo crescimento secundário denso que tem lugar após incêndios ocasionais Abstract: A study of the population dynamics of the acauIescent palm Attalea humilis Mart. ex. Spreng was conducted in three fragments (1.6, 6.4 and 9.9ha) of the AtIantic Forest, in southeastern Brazil, fiom 1996 to 1999. In late 1997, the fragments were damaged by a wildfire that burned part of the reserve they are part of. Leaf number and Ieaf rachis 1ength of the newest expanded Ieaf were measured for palms in two 10 m-wide transects which eut aeross eaeh fragment. Pinnatifid-Ieafed, pre reproduetive individuaIs were morphometrically divided in two groups: the Immature, with fewer Ieaves and smaller but highIy variable youngest leaf1ength, and Virginile, with more and Iarger Ieaves, but more constant youngest Ieaf Iength; the critic crown size by which immature and virginile could be identified varied with fragment and yearo Reproduetive palms presented reproductive structures. 2) Size hierarchy dynamicso We found scant evidence of density-dependent size in the populations studied, as measured by regression analysis between crown size variabIes and pIot densityo For both Ieaf number and newest Ieaf rachis Iength and alI populations, size differences among palms in the same ontogenetic category tended to diminish along the species' maturation processo Young palms were heterogeneously damaged by fire, while most immature palms had 50 - 75% of their crown destroyed, and aduIts showed a high proportion of pIants without any sign of crown destruction. Eighteen months after fire individuaIs tended to show reduced inequality in regard to the number of Ieaves among ontogenetic categories in alI fragments. We suggest that environmental heterogeneity could act as environmental sieves selecting individuals that are recruited to the immature category. These individuaIs would show enhanced growth and survival and less unequal slzes; 3) Spatial distribution of ontogenetic stages. Palms were significantly clumped in a range of scales, but a marked reduction in clumping degree occurred from seedling to the adult stage in alI fragments. Fire increased temporarily the clumping degree of the young. Ontogenetic stages were not found in the same plots more often than expected by chance in the majority of cases, but a significant positive association of reproductive palms between years was found in two of the :fragments. Palm distribution among fragments sectors varied with stage, :fragment and year, but was consistent between years, being little affected by tire. No general relationship between palm density and distance from fragment edge could be detected, bu a complex and sporadic response was found instead. We suggest that short distance seed dispersal by scatterhoarding rodents results in discrete, low-density clumps of young palms dissociated from reproductive plants and that later stages are mostly restricted to more open, disturbed and fire-prone sites; 4) Demography. For alI years, palm density in the medium-sized fragment (750 ¿ 900 palms ha-1) was significantly higher and varied in a broader range than in the two other fragments (130 - 200 palms ha-l and 120 - 150 palms ha-l). The stage structure of the populations was dependent on :fragment and year, but later stages were genera11y more abundant than initial ones. The population in the denser :fragment was concentrated within its disturbed sector. Both observed and projected population growth rates (Â.) were greater than one in the smallest fragment but similar to one in the largest fragment. Population growth rates based on matrix models were most sensitive to changes in survivaI of seedlings, virgins and the immature, and relatively insensitive to changes in growth and fecundity. After tire, populations remained stabIe in aII fragments but the medium-sized one, where a declining tendency took place. After tire, most individuaIs were concentrated in the medium-sized, immature stage, but by the second year after tire most popuIations had retumed to pre-fire stage structure. These results could indicate that the _esprouting ability of A. humilis, coupled with its tendency to persist and thrive in disturbed areas promote popuIation growth in disturbed small forest fragments, but this growth may be hindered by dense secondary regrowth following occasional tires Mestrado Mestre em Ecologia

Orientador : Paulo Yoshio Kageyama Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Biologia Resumo: Foi testada uma metodologia de seleção de espécies arbóreas tropicais prioritárias para a conservação. O estudo foi conduzido na Estação Ecológica de Caetetus, uma unidade de conservação de proteção integral, administrada pelo Instituto Florestal, no estado de São Paulo. Foram definidos critérios de pontuação e foi usado o método dos algoritmos para a classificação das espécies em ordem de importância para a conservação. A partir de um total de 214 espécies lenhosas conhecidas, cinco prioritárias foram selecionadas para estudos posteriores: Myroxilum peruiferum; Euterpe edulis; Chorisia speciosa; Hymenaea courbaril e Jacaratia spinosa. As populações destas espécies foram investigadas in situ procurando-se realizar um levantamento preliminar da distribuição de indivíduos adultos e da regeneração; quatro espécies apresentaram densidade entre baixa e média (até 10 árvores/ha), enquanto que E. edulis mostrou-se em alta densidade somente em áreas muito úmidas; duas espécies apresentaram exigências a fatores limitantes (umidade e luz); foi concluído que as amostragens foram insuficientes e que um esforço amostral de 2 ha pode ser pequeno para aquelas espécies. A análise do sistema dos algoritmos, bem como a da seleção e uso dos critérios revelou pontos fortes e pontos fracos da metodologia, tendo sido concluído que a metodologia pode ser útil para a seleção de espécies arbóreas tropicais para diferentes fins; foi sugerido que o estudo seja continuado, de forma a corrigir suas eventuais falhas Abstract: An algorithmic method, composed of 17 criteria, was tested in order to do the assessment of priority wood species for conservationists' purposes in tropical areas. The research was conduced in a semi-deciduous seasonal forest, inside the 'Caetetus' Ecological Station, a protected area located in the countryside of São Paulo state, BraziL All the tree species were classified in order of importance for the conservation of the genetic resources of the forest. From a survey of 214 tree species, five were selected for further research: Myroxilum peruiferum; Euterpe edulis; Chorisia speciosa; Hymenaea courbaril and Jacaratia spinosa. A preliminary survey of their regeneration and adults population was conduced; the results pointed that two of them have specific environmental requirements (moisture or light); four of them occur in low to medium density (< 10 tree/ha); and showed the needing of higher sampling efforts. The algorithmic systematic and the selection of the criteria was discussed, pointing some strong and other weak points of the method; it was concluded that this analyses could be used for the assessment of tropical wood species; and it was suggested that the weaker points should be corrected in a further research Mestrado Mestre em Biologia Vegetal

Orientador: Washington Marcondes Ferreira Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Biologia Resumo: O objetivo do presente trabalho foi estudar a composição florística de três fragmentos de uma floresta de brejo na região de Campinas, SP, e fazer algumas considerações sobre os sistemas sexuais, a fenologia de floração e de frutificação e as síndromes de dispersão das espécies desta comunidade. Nos três fragmentos estudados foram amostrados 145 espécies, 109 gêneros e 55 famílias de Angiospermas (130 espécies de Magnoliopsida e 15 de Liliopsida); destas, 66 espécies arbóreas, 31 espécies arbustivas, 8 espécies subarbustivas, 9 espécies herbáceas, 27 espécies de lia nas, 2 espécies de plantas herbáceas-epífitas e 2 espécies de plantas epífitas-parasitas. As famílias que mais se destacaram pelo número de espécies foram: Lauraceae e Myrtaceae dentro das espécies arbóreas; Asteraceae e Melastomataceae nas arbustivas; Asteraceae e Sapindaceae nas lia nas; e nas subarbustivas, herbáceas e epífitas, as diferentes famílias apresentam um número de espécies semelhante entre si. Com relação à ocorrência e à importância na estrutura da comunidade, as espécies arbóreas foram agrupadas segundo Ivanaukas et al. (submetido) em: peculiares exclusivas, peculiares não exclusivas e complementares. Foram também elaboradas chave de identificação e diagnoses para as espécies estudadas. A listagem de espécies arbóreas foi comparada com outros trabalhos realizados em áreas florestais do estado de São Paulo. Com base nestes dados, foi elaborada uma análise de similaridade florística. A época de ocorrência dos picos de floração e de frutificação das espécies pertencentes aos diferentes hábitos variam ao longo do ano. Quanto à dispersão, as espécies arbóreas apresentaram uma maior freqüência de zoocoria, as lianas de anemocoria e as herbáceas de autocoria. o sistema sexual com maior porcentagem de ocorrência é o hermafroditismo (71,5%), seguido pela dioicia (20,8%) e pela monoicia (7,6%) Abstract: The floristic composition, sexual systems, flowering and fruiting phenology and dispersal syndromes of species in three fragments of swamp forest, was studied in Campinas, São Paulo state. In these fragments of swamp forest 145 species, 109 genera and 55 families of Angiosperms were sampled (130 species belong to Magnoliopsida and 15 species to Liliopsida); 66 tree species, 31 shrub species, 8 subshrut species, 9 herb species, 27 vine species, 2 herbaceous-epiphytic plants and parasitic-epiphytic plants. Orientador : Leonor Patricia Cerdeira Morellato Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Biologia Resumo: A escolha de frutos e a dieta sazonal de esquilos (Sciurus ingrami), bugios (Alouatta fusca), macacos-prego (Cebus apella), morcegos (Artibeus lituratus), maritacas (Pinus Maximiliani) e 32 especies de aves de pequeno porte foi estudada durante 44 meses em uma floresta semidecidua no sudeste do Brasil. As mudanças na dieta destes frugívoros foram monitoradas juntamente com a sazonalidade de frutos. Foi possível dividir a comunidade de frugpivoros em cinco grupos de acordo com a utilização do fruto e sobreposição alimentar. Entre as espécies predadoras de sementes foi possível separar as espécies em predadores sazonais de sementes (Alouatta Cebus) e predadores especialistas de sementes (Pionus e Sciurus). Entre os dispersores de sementes as espécies foram separadas em dispersores ocasionais (Sciurus), generalistas (Alouatta e Cebus) e especialistas (aves e morcegos). Usando o indice de sobreposição de nicho de Morisita-Horn foi observada a maior sobreposição entre as espécies de macacos (0,46) e a menos entre as aves e as maritacas (0,06). Entre as pequenas aves a maior sobreposição foi entre duas espécies de Emberizidae (0,70). Não foi encontrada nehuma espécie-chave de planta para a comunidade, mas algumas espécies foram importantes para uma espécie ou um grupo de frugívoro. Na estação seca, quando ocorre diminuição na disponibilidade de frutos, os macacos prego tornaram-se predadores de sementes e flores, os bugios aumentaram o consumo de folhas e os esquilos consumiram frutos de palmeiras. A disponibilidade de frutos para aves e morcegos ocorreu o ano todo. As relações mutualísticas entre frutos e seus dispersores parecem ser mais evidentes em aves e morcegos, porque muitas espécies de plantas utilizadas por esses vetores apresentam padrão de frutificação sequencial Abstract: Fruit choice and seasonal food use by squirrels (Sciurus ingrami), howler (Alouatta fusca) and capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella), bats (Artibeus lituratus), parrots (Pionus maximiliani), and 32 small bird species were studied during 44 consecutive months in a semideciduous forest in southeastern Brazil. Seed predators were divided in seasonals(Alouatta and Cebus) and specializeds (Pionus and Sciurus). Among the seed dispersers the frugivores were divided in ocasional seed (Sciurus) , generalists (Alouatta and Cebus), and specializeds (birds and bats) . Using Morisita's-Horn index of niche overlap we observed the greatest diet overlap between monkeys species (0.46) and the lower between birds and parrots (0.06). Among passerine birds the greatest diet overlap occured between four Emberizidae species (0.70). Keystone plant species were not found for the community, but some plant species were important for one, or a group of, frugivorous species. In the dry season when fruit availability is low, the capuchin monkeys increase become seed predators and flower-eaters, howlers their leave and flower consumption, parrots eat a high amount of flowers, and squirrels eaten palm fruits.Fruits were available to small birds and bats throughout the year. O clima local pode ser classificado com Cfb, não havendo déficit hídrico e estando a área sujeita a alta ocorrência de nevoeiros. A floresta está assentada sobre um Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo fase terraço, distrófico, ácido, com altos teores de alumínio, micronutrientes e baixa capacidade de troca de cátions. A avaliação florística envolveu, 12.998 indivíduos (121 parcelas) distribuidos em 47 famílias, 106 gêneros e 167 espécies, enquanto a avaliação fitossociológica (67 parcelas) dos indivíduos de PAP ?> ou =? 30 cm, revelou a presença de 1.765 indivíduos distribuídos em 41 familias, 83 gêneros e 113 espécies. As 5 famílias com maiores números de espécies no levantamento florístico geral foram: Myrtaceae (19 spp), Euphorbiaceae (13 spp), Lauraceae (13 spp), Compositae (11spp) e Solanaceae (10 spp). As 5 famílias com maiores porcentagens de índice de valor de importância (IVI) foram: Euphorbiaceae, Lauraceae, Anacardiaceae, Leguminosae e sis, Saeium glandulatum ? Sebastiania serrata e Protium widgrenii, foram as principais. Em termos de categorias sucessionais o levantamento florístico geral revelou a presença de 41 espécies pioneiras, 43 secundárias iniciais, 51 secundárias tardias, 30 sem caracterização, enquanto no levantamento fitossociológico observou-se a presença de 28 espécies pioneiras, 34 secundárias iniciais, 38 secundárias tardias e 13 sem caracterização... The local climate may be classified as Cfb in the Koppen system, having a great incidence of fogs and no hidrical deficit. Orientador: Flavio Antonio Maes dos Santos Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Biologia Resumo: Neste estudo, diferenças na estrutura de t.amanho, no padrão de ocupação de microambientes, aspectos da dinâmica populacional e nas relações alométricas entre a forma da copa, o diâmetro e a altura, foram comparadas entre quatro espécies arbóreas que diferem em relação à posição na estrutura vertical da floresta (altura máxima). As espécies estudadas incluíram uma espécie de subdossel (Garcinia gardneriana), duas espécies de dossel (Chrysophyllum flexuosum e Swartzia simplex varo grandiflora) e uma espécie emergente (Sloanea guianensis). O presente estudo foi realizado em um trecho de Floresta Pluvial Tropical Atlântica, litoral norte de São Paulo (44°48'W, 23°22'S). As estruturas de t~manho (diâmetro e altura), e a distribuição em relação ao microambiente de luz foram determinadas através de um inventário completo de todos os indivíduos ~ 50 cm de altura em uma área de 1,07 ha. O microambiente de luz foi avaliado através de três variáveis: índice de iluminação de copa, número de copas acima e fase sucessional da floresta (madura, regeneração, clareira). As taxas anuais de crescimento em altura e diâmetro, recrutamento e mortalidade foram estimadas a partir de censos realizados entre 1996 e 1998. Para cada árvore com dap ~ 1 cm, foi registrado o dap e a altura total, e medidas relacionadas à forma da copa (altura da primeira ramificação, área, largura, e profundidade da copa). As espécies incluídas neste estudo mostraram alguma diferenciação na sua estrutura de tamanho e na ocupação de microambientes de luz relacionadas à altura máxima. Ao analisar o padrão de ocupação de microambientes tanto de indivíduos jovens como de adultos, foi possível inferir uma tendência de diminuição da tolerância à sombra e variação nas estruturas de tamanho para as espécies de dosse! e emergente. Todas as espécies, independentemente da altura máxima, apresentaram sobrevivência alta e relativamente constante em todas as classes de tamanho, e crescimento não fortemente correlacionado a aumentos na disponibilidade de luz. Diferenças nas relações alométricas entre o diâmetro e altura foram observadas entre a espécie emergente e as de sub-dossel e dossel, sugerindo um maior incremento em diâmetro com a altura na espécie emergente. As relações entre as variáveis que determinam a forma da copa e a altura não apresentaram diferenças marcantes entre as espécies. Entretanto, ao avaliar essas mesmas relações alométricas entre indivíduos de diferentes tamanhos dentro de cada espécie, diferentes estratégias de alocação de recursos para o diâmetro e a copa, entre as espécies, ficaram evidentes. As diferenças entre as espécies na estrutura de tamanho, padrão de ocupação de microambientes, aspectos da dinâmica e alometria em relação à altura máxima ficaram mais evidentes ao incorporar diferentes classes de tamanho nas análises. Os resultados obtidos enfatizam que a compreensão do processo de regeneração de espécies arbóreas tropicais requer que as diferenças na história de vida entre as espécies sejam analisadas levando-se em consideração tanto indivíduos jovens como adultos Abstract: Size structure, pattern of light enviromnent distribution, demographic traits, and allometric relationships in crown shape and trunk diameter with height, were compared among four tropical tree species differing in maximum size (maximum height attained by adult trees/canopy position). Species chosen for study included a subcanopy species (Garcinia gardneriana), two canopy (Chrysophyllumflexuosum e Swartzia simplex varo grandiflora) and one emergent species (Sloanea guianensis). This study was carried out in Atlantic rain forest, SE Brazil (44°48'W, 23°22'S). Size structure (diameter at breast height and total height) and distribution in relation to light environrnents were determined for individuals ~ 50 cm height in 1.07 ha samp1e area. Individual light environrnent was assessed by three variab1es: crown illumination index, number of crowns above, and forest phase (mature, building and gap). Annual growth rates in height and diameter, recruitment, and mortality were estimated by annual census conducted between 1996 and 1998. For each tree ~ 1 cm dbh, it was recorded dbh, total height, and measurements re1ated to crown shape (branching height, crown area, crown width and crown length). The studied species showed some differences in size structure and patterns of light environrnent distribution re1ated to maximum height. The analysis of light environrnent distribution tbrough ontogeny suggested low shade tolerance and variation in size structure for canopy and emergent species. AlI species, irrespective of maximum height, showed high and constant survival in alI size classes, and growth rates not strong1y corre1ated to increases in light availability. Interespecific differences in diameter-height re1ationships suggested thicker trunks with increasing height for the emergent tree species. Allometric relationships between measured variables re1ated to crown shape and tree height did not specify marked variation among species of different maximum height. However, when these same allometric relationships were evaluated for different sized trees in each species, different interespecific strategies of resource allocation to trunk and crown dimensions became evident. Interespecific differences in size structure, pattern of light environrnent distribution, demographic traits and al10metry in re1ation to maximum height were observed on1y by analyzing these traits through ontogeny. Orientador: Graziela Maciel Barroso Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Biologia Resumo: o presente estudo representa uma caracterização da formação florestal ciliar e de encosta adjacente ao rio Lençois, município de Lençois, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia (12°33'S e 41°25'W). Realizou-se um levantamento florístico das árvores e lianas, na mata ciliar e na mata de encosta e um levantamento fitos sociológico do componenete arbóreo. Apresentou-se dados de freqüência, densidade e dominância relativas e índice de valor de importância para as espécies, e índice de valor de importância para as famílias. As observações fenológicas nos indivíduos arbóreos referiram-se as fenofases de queda e brotamento de folhas, floração e frutificação; enquanto em lianas apenas a floração e frutificação foram observadas. O levantamento florístico das árvores de mata ciliar identificou 87 espécies, pertencentes a 67 gêneros e 34 famílias de Magnoliopsidae; enquanto na mata de encosta, foram amostradas 56 espécies, distribúidas em 49 gêneros e 31 famílias. Em ambas as matas, foram encostradas 33 espécies de lianas, pertencentes a 26 gêneros e 13 famílias de Magnoliophyta. A comparação florística entre as matas estudadas e outras formações florestais brasileiras mostrou grande semelhança com outras matas da Serra do Espinhaço e do sul da Bahia. Verificou-se que grande parte das espécies possui ampla distribuição nos neotrópicos. Relacionou-se algumas espécies como indicadoras de matas ciliares na Chapada Diamantina. Foram apresentadas chaves de identificação, descrições suscintas e comentários de todas as espécies, baseados principalmente em caracteres vegetativos. Em ambas as matas, verificou-se um pico moderado de queda foliar durante a estação seca e maior brotamento e atividade de floração e frutificação durante a estação chuvosa. O padrão perenifólio foi predominante, embora maior grau de deciduidade seja evidenciado na mata de encosta. Em contraste, maior atividade de floração e frutificação em espécies de lianas foi encontrada no início da estação seca Abstract: The present study presents a characterization of the riparian and montane (slope) forests along and adjacent to the Lençóis River, in the Municipality of Lençóis, Chapada Diamantina (Diamond Highlands), Bahia State, Brazil (120 33'S e 410 25'W) based on their floristic composition, structure and phenology. A floristic survey was made of the trees and woody vines, and a phytosociological survey was done on the forest componente Measurements of frequency, density, reIative dominance, and the importance value index were made at the species level, as well as the importance value index (IVI) for families. Phenological observations were made, noting the phenophases of leaf falI, leaf growth, flowering and fruiting, while for the woody vines, only flowering and fruiting, were observed. The floristic study in the riparian forest identified 87 tree species, belonging to 67 genera and 34 families of the Magnoliophyta. In the montane forest were found 56 species, belonging to 49 genera and 31 families. In both habitats there were identified a total of 33 species of woody vines, belonging to 26 genera and 13 families of Magnoliophyta. Comparing the floristic composition of the two forest types studied with other areas in Brazil revealed significant similarities with the forests in the Serra do Espinhaço Range, as well with those in southern Bahia State. The study was able to identify a number of tree species as indicator species for riparian forest in the Chapada Diamantina. Identification keys were prepared and brief descriptions and commentaries were made on all species, stressing vegetative characteristics. Field observations made in both forest types revealed a moderate peak of leaf fall in the dry season, and increased leaf budding, flowering and fruiting in the rainy season. The two forest types were predominately perennial, although of the two, the montane forest demonstrated a more pronounced deciduous componente. Santos Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Biologia Resumo: Foram feitas observações na população de jerivá da floresta paludícola da Reserva Santa Genebra (22°48'34"-50'13"S e 47°06'15" 07'33"W), em 1993 e, depois de 400 :!: 3 dias, em 1994, o que tomou possível: 1) a caracterização dos estádios ontogenéticos pós-germinativos, reconhecendo-se seis estádios na população plântula, juvenil fase 1, juvenil fase 2, imaturo, virgem e reprodutivo - que apresentaram características morfológicas e propriedades distintas. Houve sobreposição de tamanhos entre os estádios. Entretanto, o tamanho médio, no geral, foi progressivamente maior, sendo que os estádios diferiram em relação ao comprimento (nos estádios estudados) e número de folhas, ao diâmetro e à altura; 2) a determinação das relações alométricas entre o diâmetro (D) e a altura (H) nos diferentes estádios ontogenéticos, verificando-se que a relação diâmetro/altura aumentou durante a ontogênese, sendo que nos estádios com estipe (imaturo, virgem e reprodutivo), a reta alométrica não diferiu significativamente do modelo de similaridade geométrica (H = k.D) e nos demais estádios, a altura foi maior que a prevista pelo modelo, provavelmente porque as plantas tinham pequena altura, estavam protegidas contra ventos no sub-dossel da floresta e o pecíolo a tinha duração relativamente curta. Indivíduos que morreram no período de estudo tinham relação alométrica diferente dos que sobreviveram; 3) a determinação do padrão espacial durante a ontogênese, verificando-se nos estádios iniciais distribuição espacial agregada, entretanto, a partir do estádio juvenil 2, em 1993, ou do estádio imaturo, em 1994, o padrão espacial alterou-se para aleatório. Os nascimentos tinham distribuição agregada, implicando em que as plântulas também se distribuíssem agregadas e próximo às plantas-mãe, exceto em locais alagados, nos quais o recrutamento era inibido. A mortalidade foi maior próximo aos indivíduos maiores e a transição aos estádios posteriores foi menor próximo a estes indivíduos maiores, possivelmente em função da necessidade de níveis progressivamente maiores de luz para a transição aos estádios progressivamente mais adiantados. Assim, atuação de dispersores pode aumentar as possibilidades de sobrevivência e transição na população estudada; 4) a investigação da dinâmica populacional, verificando-se que a densidade e a estrutura de estádio não variaram significativamente durante o período de estudo e que a população, de acordo com um modelo matricial, apresentou A = 1,001658, que não mostrou-se significativamente diferente de 1, através de simulações "bootstrap". A estrutura de estádios observada não varíou daquela prevista como estável, embora a proporção de imaturos tenha tido um aumento visível. A extração simulada, mesmo em pequena intensidade, de plantas para exploração de palmito indicou um decréscimo populacional, mas as simulações indicaram que a extração de sementes, mesmo com grandes intensidades, não provocariam diminuição populacional, assim pode constituir uma alternativa de exploração econômica que mereceria ser melhor investigada, tomando-se também o cuidado de analisar se não existiriam prejuízos à fauna associada Abstract: A native population of jerivá was studied in 1993 and 400 :t 3 days later in 1994 in the swamp forest of the Santa Genebra Municipal Reserve (22°48'34"-50'13"5 e 47°06'15"-O7'33"W). It was possible to: 1) characterize the ontogenetic stages after-germination, recognizing six stages in the population - seedling, juvenile phase 1, juvenile phase 2, immature, virgin and reproductive - that presented morphologic features and distinct properties. It had overlapping of sizes between the stages, however, the average size, in general, was gradually larger, also the stages differed in relation to leaf size (in the studied stages) and leaf number, diameter and height; 2) determine the allometric relationships between diameter (d) and height (h) in the ontogenetic stages, verifying that the relation heightldiameter increased among ontogenetical stages. The stages with an aereal stem (immature, virgin and reproductive) showed a relationship that not differ significantly from the model of geometric similarity (H = k.D). In initial ontogenetic stages (seedling, juvenile phase 1, juvenile phase 2) height was greater than predicted by the model, possibly because the plants were protected against winds in the forest understory and short height and petiole lifespan. The most distant individuais from the allometric standard of the ontogenetic stage did not survive between observations (400 :t 3 days); 3) determine the spatial pattem during ontogeny. The initial stages presented an aggregated spatial distribution, however, for juvenile phase 2, in 1993, and for immature, in 1994, the spatial pattem changed to random. Births had an aggregated distribution, implying where seedling also distributed aggregately and close to the mother plant, except in very flooded sites, where germination was inhibited. Mortality was higher next to the largest individuais and the transition to the posterior stages was lower next to these individuais, possibly in function of the necessity of gradually higher levels of light for the transition to the more advanced stages. Thus, dispersival could increase the possibilities of survival and transition in the studied population; 4) investigate the population dynamics, verifying that the density and the structure of stages did not vary significantly during the studied period and that the population, in accordance with a matrix model, presented À = 1,001658, that was not significantly different from 1, using simulations though a bootstrap. The observed stage structure did not vary of that predicted at steady state, even the ratio of immature having had a visible increase. A simulated extration of plants for palmito harvesting indicated a population decrease, but the simulations indicated that the extration of seeds would not provoke population reduction, thus can constitute an altemative of economic exploration, that it would to be investigated analyzing if damage to the associated fauna would not exist. Orientadores: Ricardo Ribeiro Rodrigues, Hermogenes de Freitas Leitão Filho Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Biologia Resumo: Neste trabalho, foi realizado o inventário das formações vegetais remanescentes do município de Campinas-SP, um levantamento florístico da flora arbórea, a caracterização fisionômica das formações, o mapeamento da vegetação, o levantamento dos fatores de perturbação, a diagnose dos fragmentos e uma estimativa dos estados de conservação. Foram incluídos os fragmentos dos parques e bosques do município, onde foi realizado o censo de duas áreas (Bosque São José e dos Alemães). A vegetação remanescente está representada por 2.033,6ha, o que corresponde a 2,55% da área municipal, representada por 1.927,22ha (2,42%) de Florestas Estacionais Semideciduais; 65,49ha (0,08%) de Cerrado; 40,89ha (0,05%) de Florestas Paludosas ou matas brejosas, e o registro inédito da Vegetação Rupestre dos Lajedos Rochosos nas florestas de altitude. As três últimas formações estão seriamente ameaçadas de extinção e conseqüentemente, as espécies típicas desses ecossistemas estão ameaçadas de extinção local. As campinas constituem uma formação definitivamente extinta no município. A vegetação remanescente está representada por fragmentos isolados e distantes entre si, em diferentes estados de conservação, predominando (62%) os estados muito a extremamente perturbados. Os dez maiores fragmentos somam 919,51ha representando 45,21% da vegetação remanescente, enquanto 187 fragmentos somam 1.114,04ha, representando os 54,79% restantes. Foram identificadas 431 espécies da flora arbórea, distribuídas em 71 famílias e 208 gêneros. Registros inéditos de 117 espécies, incluindo Aspidosperma riedelü subsp. riedelü, que era tida como extinta, e espécies notadamente em perigo de extinção local, reafirmam a importância de se proteger, conservar, preservar e recuperar as áreas verdes remanescentes, mesmo os fragmentos muito degradados, e também a necessidade de estudos fitossociológicos, florísticos e populacionais. Nos censos realizados nos bosques 45% das espécies estão representadas por 1 até 3 indivíduos, possivelmente as populações de algumas espécies não conseguirão mais se manter e a sobrevivência dessas áreas dependerá de manejo correto e constante Abstract: An inventory of the remnant vegetation of the municipality of Campinas, São Paulo state, Southeastem Brazil was carried out, includingan floristic survey of the arboreal flora, physiognomic description of the formations, vegetation mapping, a survey of major disturbance factors and a diagnosis of the conservation state of the fragments included the study. The inventory included fragments in the parks and woodlands of the municipality and a complete census was made in two areas (Bosque São João and Bosque dos Alemães). The remnant vegetation totalled 2.033,6ha, representing 2,55% of the total area of the municipality, and included 1.927,22ha (2,42%) of Seasonal semideciduous forest, 65,49ha (0,08%) of cerrado, 40,89ha (0,05%) of swamp forest and a previously unrecorded area of vegetation typical of rocky soils in montane forests. The last three formations are highly threatened, and the species they contain thus face local extinction. The "Campina" grassland vegetation mentioned in historical records is definitely extinct in this area. The remnant vegetation is represented by isolated fragments which are distant ftom each other and show very diverse conservation states, with the majority (62%) highly disturbed. The ten largest fragments total 919,15ha and represent 45,21% ofthe remnant vegetation, while 187 fragments together make up 1,114.04 ha. A total of 431 arboreal species were recorded, belonging to 71 families and 208 genera. New records for 117 species, including Aspidosperma riedelii subsp riedelii, previously believed extinct, and a number of species known to be in danger of local extinction make clear the importance of protecting, conserving and recovering remaining green areas, even in highly degraded fragments, and highlight the necessity for floristic and phytosociological studies. Orientador: Paulo Yoshio Kageyama Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Biologia Resumo: O presente estudo objetivou estudar o processo de dispersão de sementes de Euterpe edulis Martius na Floresta Ombrófila Densa Montana (FODM), visando caracterizar níveis de interação da espécie com classes comportamentais de animais dispersores. A escolha da espécie deveu-se ao seu grande potencial em manejo em regime de rendimento sustentado e à sua importância para a conservação da FODM. O estudo foi desenvolvido dentro da Fazenda Faxinal, Blumenau, Santa Catarina, Brasil. A população de plantas de palmiteiro estudada foi delimitada em 5,44 ha de floresta, onde foi feito um censo de indivíduos com estipe exposto. As plantas sem estipe exposto foram avaliadas em sub-parcelas. Foram acompanhadas todas as plantas adultas, durante os anos de 1992 e 1993, para a quantificação do número de inflorescências e infrutescências emitidas. Em um grupo de plantas foi acompanhado o tempo de permanência dos frutos maduros em cada planta e o período de maturação dos mesmos. Em 4 áreas de 1600 m2, 2 com e 2 sem palmiteiros adultos, foram avaliadas as distâncias e quantidades de sementes dispersadas. A dispersão secundária foi avaliada a partir de 20 plantas adultas da espécie, sob as quais foram colocados frutos e sementes, avaliados durante um ano. Os resultados indicam que a população local de E. edulis pode ser classificada nos estádios de tamanho: Plântula, Jovem I, Jovem II (estes três grupos considerados como formadores do banco de plântulas), Imaturo I, Imaturo II e Adulto. O padrão de distribuição espacial registrado foi do tipo aleatório, para as plantas imaturas e adultas, e o padrão agrupado, para o banco de plântulas. Verificou-se uma acentuada aglomeração dos indivíduos do banco de plântulas ao redor das plantas parentais. A produção de inflorescências e infrutescências foi distinta durante os dois anos de estudo. Os indivíduos adultos apresentaram, em média, 1,7 inflorescências/ano e 1,4 infrutescências/ano. Constataram-se frutos maduros durante o período de janeiro a julho; as infrutescências mantiveram os frutos maduros entre 15 e 120 dias. Registrou-se, para a dispersão primária de sementes, a distância máxima de 61 m das plantas parentais, com um acentuado número de sementes próximo das mesmas. A dispersão secundária apresentou dois padrões comportamentais de animais dispersores: os despolpadores e os transportadores/predadores. As sementes no solo foram secundariamente dispersadas e/ou predadas até o início da produção do ano seguinte. Propõem-se 8 classes de comportamento animal para a dispersão de sementes da espécie e um índice de potencial de fluxo gênico via sementes, relacionando a distância entre as plantas adultas com a distância das sementes dispersadas. A espécie é apontada como um grande potencial ecológico e econômico para o enriquecimento de florestas secundárias, apesar de ficar constatada a necessidade de estudos de acompanhamento da dinâmica populacional e dos níveis de interação da espécie dentro destas formações florestais Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the seed dispersal process of Euterpe edulis Martius in the Dense Umbrophilus Montana Forest (DUMF), focusing on the interaction levels of the species with groups of animal dispersers, This species has been selected, due to its great management potential in a sustained yield regime and its importance to DUMF conservation, The study was carried out on Fazenda Faxinal, Blumenau, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The population of heart-of-palm trees under investigation was restricted to a forest area 5.44 ha, where individual plants of the species with exposed stems were tagged and measured. Plants without an exposed stem were evaluated in sub-groups. During 1992 and 1993, there was a follow-up for each adult plant, in order to quantify the inflorescences and infrutescences produced. For one group of plants, both their maturation period and the length of time the ripe fruits remain on the branches, were observed. The distance and amount of seeds dispersed by the species were assessed in four areas of 1,600 m2, two with, and two without, heart-of-palm trees. Secondary dispersal was evaluated for twenty adult heart-of-palm trees, with fruits and seeds placed under them and evaluated throughout the year. The results indicate that the local E. edulis population can be classified according to stages of growth: Seedling, Young Plant I, Young Plant II (these three groups are considered as comprising the seedling bank), Immature Plant I, Immature Plant II and Adult Plant. A random spatial distribution pattern was found for immature and adult trees, and a clustered pattern for the components of the seedling bank. A remarkable gathering of young trees around parent trees was observed. The production of inflorescences and infrutescences varied considerably over the two-year period of study. Adult plants averaged 1.7 inflorescences/year and 1.4 infrutescences/year. Ripe fruits were observed from January to July, and infrutescences preserved the mature quality of the fruits for 15-120 days. Primary seed dispersal reached a maximum distance of 61 meters from parent trees, with a large number of seeds scattered closely around them. Secondary dispersal showed two behavior patterns: pulp-removers and carriers/predators. Seed pulp removal and transportation were two highly correlated phenomena: seeds in the soil were secondarily dispersed and/or carried away until the beginning of the following year's production season. Eight categories of animal behavior for heart-of-palm seed dispersal are proposed, as well as an index of gene flow potential via seeds, taking into account both the distance between adult plants and the distance from dispersed seeds, The heart-of palm is pointed out as having a great ecological and economic potential for the enrichment of secondary forests, although further follow-ups, both on the dynamics of population and the levels of interaction of the species with other forms of forest life, are indicated. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior As florestas tropicais vêm sofrendo com a fragmentação e o desmatamento. No Brasil, a Mata Atlântica e a floresta Amazônica são exemplos disso. Nesses biomas, o conhecimento e a modelagem dos atributos florestais podem ser ferramentas úteis na compreensão destes biomas e no auxílio para adoção de medidas e práticas de manutenção da biodiversidade. Modelos de aprendizado de máquina podem ser técnicas promissoras nessas tarefas. Assim, o objetivo dessa pesquisa foi avaliar modelos de aprendizado de máquina para estimativas de atributos no bioma da Mata Atlântica e da Floresta Amazônica, no Brasil. Utilizamos dados de sete fragmentos de Mata Atlântica localizados em Minas Gerais, Brasil e uma área sob manejo florestal no sudoeste da Amazônia, no município de Porto Acre, estado do Acre, Brasil. Para atender os objetivos o trabalho foi dividido em quatro artigos. No primeiro artigo, aplicou-se modelos de aprendizado de máquina, Redes Neurais Artificiais (RNA), Máquina de Vetor de Suporte (MVS) e Random Forests (RF), para prever o recrutamento em nível de parcela na Mata Atlântica do Brasil. Atributos florestais, histórico de uso do solo, paisagem, solo e características climáticas foram usados na modelagem. O método Recursive Feature Elimination foi usado para selecionar o melhor subconjunto de variáveis preditoras. Observou-se que clima, paisagem, histórico de uso da terra e atributos da floresta são variáveis importantes para prever o recrutamento de árvores na Mata Atlântica no Brasil. O RF apresentou o melhor desempenho para estimar as taxas de recrutamento, com o maior Coeficiente de Correlação de Pearson ( ̂ ) e os menores Raiz do Erro Quadrático Médio (REQM) e Erro Médio Absoluto (EMA) para todas as repetições. No segundo artigo, utilizou-se as variáveis e modelos do primeiro artigo para estimar as taxas de mortalidade em nível de parcela. Constatou-se que o clima (precipitação, déficit hídrico climático e temperatura), idade de abandono e área basal são variáveis importantes para predizer a mortalidade de árvores na Mata Atlântica no Brasil. O RF também apresentou o melhor desempenho para estimar as taxas de mortalidade. No terceiro artigo, estimou-se o crescimento líquido com as informações utilizadas nos dois primeiros artigos. Observou-se que as variáveis edáficas, atributos da floresta e climáticas são importantes preditores das taxas de crescimento líquido na Mata Atlântica brasileira. Os métodos de aprendizado de máquina foram eficientes. O método Random Forests também mostrou superioridade sobre os demais para modelagem de crescimento na Mata Atlântica. No quarto artigo, estimou-se o volume e biomassa de árvores comerciais no sudoeste da Amazônia. Utilizou-se variáveis dendrométricas, climáticas e topográficas. O Algoritmo de Boruta foi aplicado para selecionar o melhor conjunto de variáveis. Máquina de Vetor de Suporte (MVS), Redes Neurais Artificiais (RNA), Random Forests (RF) e Modelo Linear Generalizado (MLG) foram os métodos de aprendizado de máquina avaliados. Orientador: Fernando Roberto Martins Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Biologia Resumo: Neste trabalho testamos as hipóteses de que 1) a alta frequência de poliploides em um bioma poderia indicar que esse bioma tem origem recente e 2) poliploides são mais bem adaptados do que diploides a ambientes severos, sendo, portanto, mais frequentes nesses ambientes. Usamos a Caatinga, o Cerrado e a Mata Atlântica como biomas-modelo para testarmos estas hipóteses. Comparamos o número cromossômico das espécies presentes em cada bioma e a origem de alterações no número cromossômico (i.e., ocorrência de disploidia/aneuploidia e poliploidia) entre e dentro desses biomas. Esperamos que 1) se números cromossômicos mais altos e poliploides forem mais frequentes em ambientes severos, a Caatinga terá os maiores números de cromossomos e a maior proporção de poliploides, seguidos pelo Cerrado e pela Mata Atlântica; no entanto, 2) se números cromossômicos mais altos e poliploides forem mais frequentes em biomas mais recentes, o Cerrado terá os maiores números de cromossomos e a maior proporção de poliploides, seguidos pela Caatinga e pela Mata Atlântica. A partir de um extenso banco de dados florístico de espécies dicotiledôneas arbustivo-arbóreas que ocorrem em cada bioma, pesquisamos na literatura científica o número somático (2n) das espécies e o número base (x) de gêneros e famílias. Realizamos análises de distribuição de frequências (normalidade, assimetria e curtose) dos números cromossômicos em cada bioma, em espécies comuns aos três biomas e em espécies exclusivas de cada bioma; análise de variância (One-Way ANOVA) para comparar o número cromossômico médio entre cada bioma e entre espécies comuns e exclusivas; e análise de qui-quadrado de homogeneidade para comparar classes de número cromossômico entre biomas e entre espécies comuns e exclusivas e avaliar diferenças de origem das alterações do número cromossômico. Nosso banco de dados florístico contém 4092 espécies de dicotiledôneas arbustivo-arbóreas pertencentes a 826 gêneros e 126 famílias. Encontramos o número cromossômico de 965 espécies (23,6%) pertencentes a 412 gêneros e 82 famílias em publicações especializadas. Nossos dados revelaram que a distribuição da frequência dos números de cromossomos em todos os biomas e em espécies comuns e exclusivas era não-normal, leptocúrtica e moderadamente assimétrica para a direita. Entretanto, classes mais altas de números cromossômicos e poliploidia foram mais frequentes no Cerrado. Nossos resultados corroboram a hipótese de que a poliploidia pode indicar a origem mais recente de uma bioma Abstract: It has been hypothesized that 1) high polyploidy frequency in a biome could indicate its recent origin and 2) that polyploids are better adapted to harsh environments than diploids, therefore being more frequent in such environments. In this work we tested for those hypotheses using the Atlantic forest, the Caatinga and the Cerrado as model biomes. We compared the chromosome number of species in each biome and the origin of chromosome number alteration (i.e, the occurrence of dysploidy/aneuploidy and polyploidy) among and within those biomes. We expected that 1) if high chromosome numbers and polyploidy are more frequent in severe environments, the Caatinga will have the highest chromosome numbers and the highest proportion of polyploids, followed by the Cerrado and the Atlantic forest; however, 2) if high chromosome numbers and polyploidy are more frequent in more recent biomes, the Cerrado will have the highest chromosome numbers and the highest proportion of polyploids, followed by the Caatinga and the Atlantic forest. From a floristic database of dicotyledonous shrub-tree species that occur in each biome, we surveyed the scientific literature for the somatic number (2n) of species and base number (x) of genera and families. We conducted analyses of frequency distribution (normality, skewness and kurtosis) of the chromosome numbers in each biome, of species common to all biomes and of species exclusive to each biome; analysis of variance (One-Way ANOVA), to compare the mean chromosome number among biomes and between common and exclusive species; and the chi-square test of homogeneity, in order to compare classes of chromosome numbers among biomes and to assess differences among the origin of chromosome number alterations. Our floristic database contains 4092 dicotyledonous shrub-tree species belonging to 826 genera and 126 families. We found the chromosome number of 965 species (23.6%), belonging to 412 genera and 82 families in specialized literature. Our data revealed that the distribution of the frequency of chromosomes numbers was non-normal, leptokurtic and moderately skewed to the right for species in all biomes and for common and exclusive species. The species richness of Amazonian phlebotomines is considered to be one of the highest in the world. In the present study, we investigated the richness and diversity of phlebotomine fauna in Xapuri city, Acre state, Western Brazilian Amazonia, which is an area that is highly endemic for cutaneous leishmaniasis. Sand fly collections were performed monthly from August 2013 to July 2015 (288 h total of sampling effort) in intradomiciliary, peridomiciliary, and forested environments of two localities. Collected females were dissected, microscopically examined for flagellates in their guts, and preserved in ethanol. A total of 21,197 specimens comprising 14 genera and 57 species were collected, and the majority of these were Nyssomyia, Psychodopygus, and Trichophoromyia genera. Three new records of phlebotomine species for Acre are presented here, including Brumptomyia brumpti, Psathyromyia pradobarrientosi, and for the first time in Brazil, Th. omagua. In Xapuri, the phlebotomine fauna of different ecotopes was varied in regard to abundance, diversity, and frequency, and they included proven and permissive vectors of Leishmania spp. The fauna discovered in the forested areas (57 species) was richer and more diverse than was that (33 species) identified in the peri‑ and intra-domiciles. The identification of Leishmania subgenera that were present in sand fly guts according to SSU rRNA sequences revealed ten and three species harboring Leishmania of subgenera Viannia and Leishmania (most likely Leishmania amazonensis), respectively. The presence of Leishmania (Leishmania) in sand flies are reported here for the first time in Acre. The presence of L. (Viannia) spp. in Brumptomyia sp. and Lutzomyia sherlocki. and the occurrence of mixed infections with Leishmania of both subgenera in Ps. lainsoni have been reported for the first time in Brazil. Taken together, data from previous studies and from the present study highlight the remarkable complexity of phlebotomine fauna that is possibly due to the well-preserved Xapuri forested areas sustaining vital economic activities of plant extraction and ecological tourism. Our findings also provide new insights into the ongoing adaptation of Trichophoromyia and Psychodopygus species to human habitats.

Natural communities are dynamic systems in time and space. The spatial distribution of plants and animals tends to coincide with the availability of resources needed for the survival and reproduction of each species. Natural treefall gaps offer a number of resources that influence the distribution of birds within the forest. We compared the understory bird assemblages of natural treefall gaps (15 sampling points) with those found in the adjacent forest (15 points) in the Humaitá Forest Reserve in southwestern Brazilian Amazonia. We used mist-nets to sample birds and obtained 700 captures of 105 species. Species richness, number of individuals, and species composition were all similar between gaps and forest, although six species presented some degree of association with the gaps, and nine with the forest. Nectarivores preferred gaps significantly over forest, whereas insectivores and frugivores were distributed equally between gaps and forest. Vegetation height and density differed between gaps and forest, and influenced the distribution of bird species in the two environments. Fruit availability was positively correlated with frugivore abundance in gaps. Overall, 33.3% of the birds associated with the treefall gaps are from lower forest canopy, while the others are understory species. We showed that the use of natural gaps by birds in a fragmented landscape of the Amazon forest contributes to the environmental heterogeneity and succession dynamics following natural events of habitat disturbance. RESUMO As comunidades naturais são sistemas dinâmicos no tempo e no espaço. A distribuição espacial de plantas e animais coincide com a disponibilidade dos recursos necessários para a sobrevivência e reprodução de cada espécie. Clareiras naturais oferecem vários recursos que influenciam a distribuição de aves na floresta. Comparamos a assembleia de aves de sub-bosque de clareiras naturais (15 clareiras) com a encontrada na floresta adjacente (15 pontos) na Reserva Florestal Humaitá, no sudoeste da Amazônia brasileira. Amostramos aves com redes de neblina e contabilizamos 700 capturas de 105 espécies. A riqueza de espécies, o número de indivíduos e a composição de espécies foram semelhantes entre clareiras e floresta, mas seis espécies foram mais associadas com as clareiras e nove com a floresta. Os nectarívoros preferiram significativamente clareiras à floresta, enquanto os insetívoros e frugívoros se distribuíram igualmente entre clareiras e floresta. A altura e a densidade da vegetação variaram significativamente entre clareiras e floresta e influenciaram a distribuição das espécies nos dois ambientes. A disponibilidade de frutos foi correlacionada positivamente com a abundância de frugívoros nas clareiras. Em geral, 33,3% das aves associadas às clareiras são espécies de sub-dossel e as demais de sub-bosque. Mostramos que o uso de clareiras pelas aves em uma paisagem fragmentada da Amazônia contribui para a heterogeneidade ambiental e a dinâmica de sucessão após eventos naturais de perturbação do habitat.

Among these, selective logging may represent a less damaging alternative, although it may still alter species compositions of animals and plants in forest ecosystems. Dung beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) are used as bioindicators as they respond quickly to environmental changes. Thus, in this study we tested the effects of time after logging and seasonality on species richness, number of individuals, and assemblage structure of dung beetles in central Brazilian Amazon Forest. We also identified indicator species of logged and unlogged sites. We used the total of 240 flight interception traps (20 per area) in 11 logged sites (between one and 15 years after logging) and one unlogged site. We collected 28,508 dung beetles from 85 species. Most individuals (24,349, 85.41%) were collected during the dry period. Four species were good indicators of the unlogged site, while 21 species were indicators of logged sites. Time after logging and seasonality significantly affected species richness, the number of individuals collected and assemblage structure. These effects were greater from the second to the fifth year after logging. Logged sites represented 77% to 95% of species richness in the unlogged site. From the sixth year after logging, dung beetles assemblages were significantly recovered. Our results show that selective logging in the study sites significantly, but momentarily affected dung beetles diversity. Thus, selective logging practices may not cause irreversible impacts on dung beetles. As florestas tropicais est??o passando por in??meras transforma????es causadas, em grande parte, pelo homem. Nossos resultados indicam que a explora????o seletiva de madeira causou modifica????es na assembleia de Scarabaeinae, afetando a riqueza de esp??cies, a abund??ncia de indiv??duos e a estrutura da assembleia. Estas modifica????es foram mais intensas do segundo ao quinto ano ap??s a explora????o e, apesar das modifica????es, das 44 esp??cies presentes na ??rea n??o exploradas, 77,27 ??? 95,45% estavam presentes em cada uma das ??reas exploradas. Ainda, a partir do sexto ano ap??s a explora????o seletiva de madeira, notamos uma recupera????o da riqueza, abund??ncia e estrutura da assembleia de Scarabaeinae. Apesar de gerar impactos sobre a fauna de Scarabaeinae, nossos resultados demonstram que a explora????o seletiva de madeira na ??rea de estudo n??o ocasionou perda de diversidade na assembleia de Scarabaeinae ao longo do tempo e no conjunto das ??reas avaliadas.

Conchocarpus kallunkiae (Rutaceae: Galipeinae), a new species from the Magdalena River Valley region in Colombia, is described and illustrated and comments about its geographical distribution, phenology, conservation status, and taxonomic affinities are provided. The new species differs from any other species in the genus by the combination of remarkably bullate blades, basally appendaged anthers, and a 4-carpellate ovary. Based on inflorescences and flowers, it seems closely related to Conchocarpus macrophyllus (type species of the genus) with which it shares foliaceus primary bracts, partial inflorescences developing as scaly short-shoots, zygomorphic flowers, an androecium of two stamens and five staminodes, and a glabrous ovary. Because it is endemic to the inter-Andean valleys of Colombia and exhibits some traits uncommon among the Galipeinae (for example, anthers connate by their basal appendages), including this species in future evolutionary studies may provide insights about the geographical and morphological histories of the genus and the subtribe.

Natural regeneration is key for large‐scale forest restoration, yet it may lead to different biodiversity outcomes depending on socio‐environmental context. We combined the results of a global meta‐analysis to quantify how biodiversity recovery in naturally regenerating forests deviates from biodiversity values in reference old‐growth forests, with structural equation modeling, to identify direct and indirect associations between socioeconomic, biophysical and ecological factors and deviation in biodiversity recovery at a landscape scale. Low deviation within a landscape means higher chances of multiple sites in naturally regenerating forests successfully recovering biodiversity compared to reference forests. Deviation in biodiversity recovery was directly negatively associated with the percentage of cropland, forest cover, and positively associated with the percentage of urban areas in the surrounding landscape. These three factors mediated the indirect associations with rural population size, recent gross deforestation, time since natural regeneration started, mean annual temperature, mean annual water deficit, road density, land opportunity cost, percentage cover of strictly protected forest areas, and human population variation in the surrounding landscape. We suggest that natural forest restoration should be prioritized in landscapes with both low socioeconomic pressures on land use conversion to pasturelands and urban areas, and high percentage of forest cover.

Background and aims – The genus Anemopaegma (Bignoniaceae) includes around 47 species and has its centre of diversity in Brazil. Here, we describe and illustrate a new species from French Guiana, Anemopaegma kawense, and compare it to the two most similar species, A. foetidum and A. granvillei. We further assess the conservation status of all three species.Material and methods – Morphological descriptions are based on herbarium specimens deposited at BM, BR, CAY, INPA, K, MO, P, SPF, and U, and, in the case of the newly described species, also on field observations. The conservation status assessments follow the IUCN Red List criteria.Key results – Anemopaegma kawense differs from both A. foetidum and A. granvillei by its densely villose twigs, longitudinally plicate leaflets with secondary veins not or hardly prominent below, and tertiary veins impressed below. It is further separated from A. foetidum by the leaflets that are villose below and the calyx that is entirely pubescent outside. On the other hand, A. kawense differs from A. granvillei by the densely lepidote outer surface of the corolla, shorter petiolules, leaflets with midrib impressed above, shorter bracts and bracteoles, inflorescence peduncle exceeding the rachis, and pedicels densely puberulous, not lepidote or only sparsely so at the apex. This species is endemic to the Kaw Mountain in north-eastern French Guiana, where it grows in low stunted forest on laterite; it is assessed as Endangered according to the IUCN criteria. New descriptions are provided for A. granvillei, which is newly reported from Suriname, and for A. foetidum, which is newly reported from French Guiana; these two species are assessed as Endangered and Least Concern, respectively. Lectotypes are designated for A. maguirei, which is here synonymised with A. foetidum, and for A. umbellatum, another synonym of that species. A key to the 12 species of Anemopaegma occurring in the Guianas is presented.

To resolve the various types of biological ice nuclei (IN) with atmospheric models, an extension of the empirical parameterization (EP) (Phillips et al. 2008; 2013) is proposed to predict the active IN from multiple groups of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs). Our approach is to utilize coincident observations of PBAP sizes, concentrations, biological composition, and ice-nucleating ability. The parameterization organizes the PBAPs into five basic groups: fungal spores, bacteria, pollen, viral particles, plant/animal detritus, algae, and their respective fragments. This new biological component of the EP was constructed by fitting predicted concentrations of PBAP IN to those observed at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) site located in the central Amazon. The fitting parameters for pollen and viral particles, plant/animal detritus, which are much less active as IN than fungal and bacterial groups, are constrained based on their ice nucleation activity from the literature. The parameterization has empirically derived dependencies on the surface area of each group (except algae), and the effects of variability in their mean sizes and number concentrations are represented via their influences on the surface area. The concentration of active algal IN is estimated from literature-based measurements.Predictions of this new biological component of the EP are consistent with previous laboratory and field observations not used in its construction. The EP scheme was implemented in a 0D parcel model. It confirms that biological IN account for most of the total IN activation at temperatures warmer than −20°C and at colder temperatures dust and soot become increasingly more important to ice nucleation.

Orientador: László Károly Nagy Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Biologia Resumo: As mudanças no uso da terra levaram à perda de cerca de 90% da cobertura florestal tropical no domínio da Mata Atlântica, Brasil, com impactos significativos nos ciclos hídricos e biogeoquímicos e no fornecimento de serviços ecossistêmicos. Os microrganismos do solo desempenham um papel importante na ciclagem de nutrientes em ecossistemas terrestres e sua composição e função da comunidade são influenciadas pela interação de uma série de fatores bióticos e abióticos que caracterizam os ecossistemas. Essas interações são inevitavelmente alteradas pela mudança no uso do solo, mas seus efeitos sobre as comunidades e processos subterrâneos raramente são quantificados, como no caso da introdução de espécies exóticas que substituem os ecossistemas florestais nativos, com consequências para os processos ecológicos e biogeoquímicos. Por exemplo, espécies do gênero Pinus do Hemisfério Norte e seus simbiontes ectomicorrízicos foram amplamente plantadas na área nativa de Araucaria angustifolia, uma conífera filogeneticamente muito mais antiga do que Pinus, e associada a fungos micorrízicos arbusculares. Este trabalho teve como objetivo quantificar os efeitos da substituição de florestas montanas nativas dominadas por A. angustifolia por plantações de Pinus taeda sobre (i) comunidades microbianas do solo (arquéias e bactérias) e (ii) o ciclo do nitrogênio. Para fazer isso, quantificamos a biomassa microbiana e caracterizamos a composição / atividade potencial espacial e sazonal (úmida e quente vs. seca e fria) de genes associados ao ciclo N de comunidades de archaeal e bacteriana do solo em um povoamento de floresta nativa e uma plantação de pinheiros no Parque Estadual de Campos do Jordão, onde A. angustifolia é mais bem preservada em sua distribuição norte dentro do domínio biogeográfico da Mata Atlântica. O solo mineral e a camada orgânica foram amostrados nos picos das estações chuvosa e seca. Extrações de DNA foram realizadas para 96 amostras de solo (12 amostras x 2 tipos de floresta x 2 camadas de solo x 2 estações). Nós relatamos os resultados para as espécies de coníferas nativas e exóticas para a frequência / abundância dos genes nifH, AmoB, AmoA, associados ao ciclo do N, e os relacionamos com as variáveis do solo e biomassa microbiana, estimadas com base nas concentrações orgânicas de N e C de as amostras de solo. Verificamos que a floresta nativa com A. angustifolia apresentou os maiores valores de imobilização microbiana de C (MBC) e C (MBN), NO3- e NH4 + na camada orgânica, e que tanto o solo orgânico quanto mineral em A. angustifolia apresentaram valores mais elevados de MBC e MBN em comparação com os da plantação de pinheiros. Diferenças sazonais foram evidentes no solo da floresta de A. angustifolia com valores de MBC, MBN e NO3- na camada superficial do solo mais elevados na estação seca do que na estação chuvosa. Em relação à atividade potencial das enzimas envolvidas no ciclo do N, a abundância do gene nifH foi negativamente correlacionada com o NH4 + do solo e, consequentemente, a maior abundância de nifH foi encontrada na parte superior do solo da plantação de pinheiros em correspondência com a menor concentração de NH4 +. A abundância de genes amoA relacionados a arquéias oxidantes de amônio (AOA) e bactérias oxidantes de amônio (AOB) foram negativamente correlacionados com a concentração de NH4 +. A plantação de pinheiros apresentou maior abundância de bactérias e genes de archaea amoA quando comparada com a floresta de araucárias. Na plantação de pinheiros, os genes nifH e archaeal amoA eram mais abundantes na camada superficial do solo do que na camada orgânica do solo. Os genes funcionais mostraram uma variação sazonal evidente, tanto na camada orgânica quanto na camada superficial do solo em ambos os tipos de vegetação. Este estudo de experimentação natural é uma porta aberta para a investigação da atividade e função da microbiota do solo nestes ecossistemas montanhosos. Nossos resultados são dados que contribuirão com modelos biogeoquímicos para projetar os impactos do uso da terra (plantações de pinus) e a dinâmica do ciclo do carbono e do nitrogênio associados aos fungos micorrízicos Abstract: Land-use change has led to the loss of about 90% of the tropical forest cover in the Atlantic Forest domain, Brazil, with significant impacts on the water and biogeochemical cycles and on the provisioning of ecosystem services. Soil microorganisms play an important role in the cycling of nutrients in terrestrial ecosystems and their community composition and function are influenced by the interaction of a series of biotic and abiotic factors. These interactions are inevitably altered by land-use change but their effects on below-ground communities and processes rarely quantified, such as in the case of the introduction of exotic species that replace native forest ecosystems, with consequences for ecological and biogeochemical processes. For instance, species of the genus Pinus from the Northern Hemisphere and their ectomycorrhizal symbionts have been widely planted in the native range of Araucaria angustifolia, a phylogenetically much more ancient conifer than species of the genus Pinus and associated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. This work aimed at quantifying the effects of replacing native A. angustifolia-dominated montane forests with Pinus taeda plantations on (i) soil microbial communities (archaea and bacteria) and (ii) the nitrogen (N) cycle. To do this, we quantified microbial biomass and characterized the spatial and seasonal (wet and warm vs. dry and cool) composition/potential activity of genes associated with the N cycle of soil archaeal and bacterial communities in a native forest stand and a in a pine plantation in the State Park of Campos do Jordão, where A. angustifolia is best preserved in its northern distribution within the Atlantic Forest biogeographical domain. Mineral soil and the organic layer were sampled at the peaks of the wet and dry seasons. DNA extractions were carried out for 96 soil samples (12 samples x 2 forest types x 2 soil layers x 2 seasons). We report the results for the native and exotic conifer species for the frequency/abundance of genes nifH, AmoB, AmoA, associated with the N cycle, and relate these to soil variables and microbial biomass, estimated based on organic N, and carbon (C) concentrations of the soil samples. We found that the native forest with A. angustifolia presented higher values of microbial immobilization of C (MBC) and C (MBN), NO3- and NH4+ in the organic layer, and that both the organic and mineral topsoil in A. angustifolia showed higher values of MBC and MBN compared with those in the pine plantation. Seasonal differences were evident in the A. angustifolia forest soil with values of MBC, MBN and NO3- in topsoil higher in the dry season than in the rainy season. Regarding the potential activity of enzymes involved in the N cycle, the abundance of nifH gene was negatively correlated with soil NH4+ and accordingly, the greatest abundance of nifH was found in the topsoil of the pine plantation in correspondence with the lowest concentration of NH4+. The abundance of amoA genes related to ammonium oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) were negatively correlated with the concentration of NH4+. The pine plantation showed a higher abundance of bacterial and archaeal amoA genes when compared with the araucaria forest. In the pine plantation nifH and archaeal amoA genes were more abundant in the topsoil than in the organic layer. The functional genes showed an evident seasonal variation, in both the organic layer and the topsoil in both vegetation types. Our results therefore suggest that the pine with its ECM symbionts has a better nutrient uptake efficiency; however, as the mycorrhizal symbiont effect has been inconclusive, we suggest an approach using modelling combined with experimental work on C and N dynamics with AM and ECM is undertaken. This natural experiment is an open door for the investigation of the activity and function of the soil microbiota in tropical mountain ecosystems. A variação na composição das espécies e seus requisitos ambientais nos diferentes estágios de sucessão podem se refletir na estrutura funcional e filogenética das comunidades. Desta forma, a funcionalidade das florestas muda de acordo com as diferentes fases da sucessão, bem como a quantidade de história evolutiva que elas possuem. Por esse motivo, esse trabalho buscou avaliar as seguintes questões: Ao longo do gradiente sucessional, as florestas antigas retêm mais história evolutiva e mais diversidade de características reprodutivas? Os dados foram coletados na Reserva Natural Guaricica (25°19'S e 45°42'W) e Reserva Natural das Águas (25°21 'S e 48°46' W), Antonina, Paraná, sul do Brasil. Avaliamos a variação das diversidades taxonômicas, funcionais e filogenéticas alfa e beta das comunidades de árvores e arbustos ao longo do gradiente sucessional (fase 1, fase de iniciação do povoamento, de 0 a 10 anos; fase 2, fase de exclusão do caule, de 10 a 25 anos; e fase 3, fase de reinício do sub-bosque, 25-200 anos). Também avaliamos a ocorrência de linhagens raras e a presença de características únicas relacionadas à dispersão de sementes e polinização. Além da mudança esperada na composição das espécies, linhagens e estados e valores de características foram substituídos, com florestas antigas abrigando linhagens e características particulares e uma quantidade maior de história evolutiva e funcional. Também descobrimos que linhagens únicas eram aquelas que desempenhavam funções exclusivas. Nosso estudo mostrou que à medida que a sucessão prossegue, ocorre a troca de linhagens e características, com o estágio de reinicialização do sub-bosque abrigando a maior diversidade taxonômica, filogenética e funcional. Além disso, os estágios de reinício do subbosque são áreas importantes para a conservação de linhagens exclusivas, como as magnoliids, e de características raras, como frutos e sementes grandes, destacando a importância para a conservação de florestas antigas, já que junto com sua perda , histórias evolutivas únicas e funções exclusivas são perdidas. Essas mudanças na distribuição das diversidades filogenéticas e funcionais das características reprodutivas das plantas podem ter efeitos em cascata nos parceiros de interação. Abstract: During the succession of the secondary forest it is possible to observe changes in the composition of the plant community, characterized by the replacement of species. The variation in the composition of the species and their environmental requirements in the different stages of succession can be reflected in the functional and phylogenetic structure of the communities. In this way, the functionality of forests changes according to the different stages of succession, as well as the amount of evolutionary history they have. For this reason, this work sought to evaluate the following questions: Along the successional gradient, do old growth forests retain more evolutionary history and more diversity of reproductive traits? At what stages of succession are rare lineages of trees and shrubs present? Do rare lineages have unique traits? Is the similarity of phylogenetic and reproductive traits along the successional gradient reduced in older forests? Is there an turnover of species, lineages and traits of trees and shrubs along the successional gradient? The data were collected in the Reserva Natural Guaricica (25°19'S and 45°42'W) and Reserva Natural das Águas (25°21 'S and 48°46' W), Antonina, Paraná, southern Brazil. We evaluated the variation in taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic alpha and beta diversity of tree and shrub communities along the successional gradient (phase 1, population initiation phase, from 0 to 10 years; phase 2, stem exclusion phase, from 10 to 25 years, and phase 3, understory restart phase, 25-200 years). We also evaluated the occurrence of rare lineages and the presence of unique traits related to seed dispersal and pollination. In addition to the expected change in species composition, lineages and traits values have been replaced, with old growth forests harboring particular lineages, traits and a greater amount of evolutionary and functional history. We also found that unique lineages were those that performed unique functions. Our study showed that, as the succession proceeds, lineages and traits change, with the undergrowth reset stage harboring the greatest taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional diversity. In addition, the stages of restarting the understory are important areas for the conservation of exclusive lineages, such as magnoliids, and of rare traits, such as large fruits and seeds, highlighting the importance for the conservation of ancient forests, since together with its loss, unique evolutionary stories and exclusive functions are lost. These changes in the distribution of phylogenetic and functional diversity of the reproductive characteristics of plants can have cascading effects on the interaction partners.
