We particularly appreciate the timely reviews in light of the demands imposed by the rapid review process at Geophysical Research Letters. With the revival of the “major revisions” decisions, we appreciate the reviewers' efforts on multiple versions of some manuscripts. The recent dramatic increase in seismic anisotropy and surface global positioning system (GPS) data for central Asia permits a comprehensive examination of the mantle's role in mountain building. A joint analysis of 178 shear-wave-splitting and ~2000 GPS observations using a new technique reveals that the crust and lithospheric mantle deform coherently, arguing for crust-mantle mechanical coupling during deformation. The observed spatial variations in anisotropy reflect the large-scale pattern of lithospheric deformation, as well as a change in deformational style from simple shear on the Tibetan Plateau transitioning to pure shear in surrounding regions. We present a study of the vertically integrated deviatoric stress field for the Indian plate and the Tibetan Plateau associated with gravitational potential energy (GPE) differences. Although the driving forces for the Indian plate have been attributed solely to the mid-oceanic ridges that surround the entire southern boundary of the plate, previous estimates of vertically integrated stress magnitudes of ~6-7 x [10.sup.12] N/m in Tibet far exceed those of ~3 x [10.sup.12] N/m associated with GPE at mid-oceanic ridges, calling for an additional force to satisfy the stress magnitudes in Tibet. We use the Crust 2.0 data set to infer gravitational potential energy differences in the lithosphere. We then apply the thin sheet approach in order to obtain a global solution of vertically integrated deviatoric stresses associated only with GPE differences. Our results show large N-S extensional deviatoric stresses in Tibet that the ridge-push force fails to cancel. Our results calibrate the magnitude of the basal tractions, associated with density buoyancy driven mantle flow, that are applied at the base of the lithosphere in order to drive India into Tibet and cancel the N-S extensional stresses within Tibet. Moreover, our deviatoric stress field solution indicates that both the ridge-push influence (~1 x [10.sup.12] N/m) and the vertically integrated deviatoric stresses associated with GPE differences around the Tibetan Plateau (~3 x [10.sup.12] N/m) have previously been overestimated by a factor of two or more. These overestimates have resulted from either simplified two-dimensional approximations of the thin sheet equations, or from an assumption about the mean stress that is unlikely to be correct. A polycrystalline sample of MgSi[O.sub.3]-orthopyroxene was hot pressed at a pressure of 4 GPa and temperature of 975 [degrees] C in a multi-anvil apparatus. The recovered specimen has a bulk density within 1% of the X-ray density and compressional and shear wave velocities within 1% of the Hashin-Shtrikman averages of the isotropic velocities calculated from the single-crystal elastic moduli. Compressional and shear wave travel times were measured at pressures up to 10 GPa at room temperature using the phase comparison method of ultrasonic interferometry in a 1000 ton uniaxial split-cylinder apparatus (USCA-1000). The velocities and elastic moduli monotonically increase with pressure; discontinuous behavior is not observed. Both the compressional velocity and bulk modulus, however, exhibit pronounced non-linear dependence on pressure. Fitting a fourth-order Eulerian finite-strain equation of state yield values of the bulk modulus and its first and second pressure derivatives, [K.sub.0], = 104(2) GPa, [K[prime].sub.0] = 10.9(5), and [K[double prime].sub.0] = -1.6(2) [GPa.sup.-1]. In contrast, the shear velocity and modulus are linear with pressure, yielding values of [G.sub.0] = 74.9(1.5) GPa and [G[prime].sub.0] = 1.6(1), when fit to a third-order finite-strain equation of state. A P-V trajectory calculated from these continuous measurements of K vs. P to 8 GPa is in agreement with extant static compression data for this material, without requiring a discontinuous change in K at 4 GPa. The velocities of MgSi[O.sub.3]-orthopyroxene increase more rapidly with pressure than those for [Mg.sub.2]Si[O.sub.4]-olivine (especially for P-waves), such that these two mineral phases are virtually indistinguishable in their velocities at 200 km depth, unless the velocity-temperature dependence of the two phases is dramatically different.
