AIM: We tested the hypothesis that visual field (VF) progression can be predicted with a deep learning model based on longitudinal pairs of optic disc photographs (ODP) acquired at earlier time points during follow-up. METHODS: 3919 eyes (2259 patients) with ≥2 ODPs at least 2 years apart, and ≥5 24-2 VF exams spanning ≥3 years of follow-up were included. Serial VF mean deviation (MD) rates of change were estimated starting at the fifth visit and subsequently by adding visits until final visit. VF progression was defined as a statistically significant negative slope at two consecutive visits and final visit. We built a twin-neural network with ResNet50-backbone. A pair of ODPs acquired up to a year before the VF progression date or the last VF in non-progressing eyes were included as input. Primary outcome measures were area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and model accuracy. RESULTS: The average (SD) follow-up time and baseline VF MD were 8.1 (4.8) years and -3.3 (4.9) dB, respectively. VF progression was identified in 761 eyes (19%). The median (IQR) time to progression in progressing eyes was 7.3 (4.5-11.1) years. The AUC and accuracy for predicting VF progression were 0.862 (0.812-0.913) and 80.0% (73.9%-84.6%). When only fast-progressing eyes were considered (MD rate < -1.0 dB/year), AUC increased to 0.926 (0.857-0.994). CONCLUSIONS: A deep learning model can predict subsequent glaucoma progression from longitudinal ODPs with clinically relevant accuracy. This model may be implemented, after validation, for predicting glaucoma progression in the clinical setting.

Introduction: Ayurveda, the Indian traditional system of medicine, describes a unique concept “Prakriti” (human somatic constitution), categorizing the population into seven subgroups based on phenotypic characters. Prakriti influences the eyes in terms of size, shape, appearance, dryness or roughness, movement, and various specific features of the eye. These relates to the constitutional variations of the Volunteers. No correlation has been explored between Prakriti and field of vision yet. This study was carried out to explore a possible correlation between Prakriti and field of vision. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 50 volunteers of age between 18 and 30 years. Prakriti and field of vision of the participants were assessed. One-way ANOVA test and Karl Pearson's correlation coefficient tests were used for the analysis. The assessment of mean and standard deviation value of the field of vision as per Prakriti was done. Results: A statistically significant association was found between fields of vision of both eyes with Prakriti. A positive correlation was found between superior, inferior, nasal, temporal side of field of vision of the right eye with superior, inferior, nasal, and temporal side of field of vision of the left eye. A positive correlation was found between the superior side of field of vision of right and left eyes among Shleshma Pittala-Shleshma, and Vatala-Pittalaprakritis. Conclusion: Anatomical and physiological variations of the eyes of different Prakriti volunteers affect the field of vision. Sleshma prakriti volunteers had greater degree of field of vision as compared to other Prakriti.

AimsWe compared feasibility, quality and outcomes of visual field (VF) testing in children with neuro-ophthalmic disease between the discontinued 'gold-standard' Goldmann and Octopus perimeters.MethodsChildren with neuro-ophthalmic disease, attending Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, were assessed using standardised protocols by one examiner in a single sitting, using Goldmann and Octopus kinetic perimetry. Outputs were classified to compare severity of loss and defect type. Test quality was assessed using both qualitative and quantitative methods.ResultsThirty children (40% female) aged 5-15 years participated. Goldmann perimetry was completed in full by 90.0% vs 72.4% for Octopus. Inability to plot the blind spot was the most common reason for not completing testing. Over 75% completed a test in ≤20 min. Duration was similar between perimeters (paired t-test, mean difference: 0.48min (-1.2, 2.2), p=0.559). The lowest quality tests were for Octopus perimetry in children

Objective: Myopia is a prevalent disease affecting adolescent vision and harms various health outcomes. However, the evidence about the effects of myopia on adolescents' overall health status is limited. Using health-related quality of life (HRQoL), a comprehensive health measurement indicator, this study aims to evaluate the effects of myopia on adolescents' HRQoL., Methods and Analysis: Adolescents' HRQoL was measured by the Child Health Utility 9D instrument. Data were collected from a population-based cross-sectional survey conducted in Shandong province of China. To mitigate the potential endogeneity bias, parents' myopia degree was used as the instrumental variable for adolescents' myopia status. The causal model was built to explore the effects and potential mediators of myopia on the HRQoL of adolescents. Heterogeneity analysis was used to identify susceptible groups., Results: 108 657 adolescents with an average age of 12 were included in the analysis. Compared with adolescents without myopia, the health utility value of individuals with low, moderate and high decreases by 0.5%, 1.1% and 2.2%, respectively. The reduction of outdoor activity time and increase in electronic device usage time play the mediator role. Myopia leads to a greater decrease in the health utility value of adolescents in higher grades, boarding schools and low-income households compared with their counterparts., Conclusion: Myopia impairs adolescents' HRQoL and damages the overall health level of adolescents. The frequency of outdoor activity and electronic device usage could be the potential mediators. Functional vision disorder (FVD) is a relatively common diagnosis in ophthalmic practice which can be difficult to make because of clinician's apprehension to miss organic pathology. We review the diagnostic approach to patients with FVD, organic mimics of FVD, its diagnostic and management strategies and associated cost burden. Patients with FVD typically present with visual acuity and/or field loss. Diagnostic work-up should include patient observation, detailed history, pupillary examination, dilated ophthalmoscopy, visual field testing and ganglion cell analysis of the macular complex. Most common organic mimickers of FVD are amblyopia, cortical blindness, retrobulbar optic neuritis, cone dystrophy and chiasmal tumours; however, all could be ruled out by structured diagnostic approach. For patients with unilateral visual loss, bottom-up refraction, fogging of the well-seeing eye in the phoropter, convex lens and base-down prism tests could aid in diagnosis. For patients claiming binocular vision loss, checking for eye movement during the mirror test or nystagmus elicited by an optokinetic drum can be helpful. Effective management of FVD involves reassurance, stress reduction and, if agreed on, management of comorbid anxiety and/or depression. The social cost of FVD is predominately economic as patients typically meet several healthcare providers over multiple visits and often undergo several neuroimaging studies before neuro-ophthalmology referral. BackgroundThe time of onset of optic disc swelling in non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is not known, and it is commonly assumed to arise simultaneously with vision loss. Our goal is to report the presence and persistence of optic disc swelling without initial vision loss and its subsequent evolution to typical, symptomatic NAION.MethodsClinical case series of patients with optic disc swelling and normal visual acuity and visual fields at initial presentation who progressed to have vision loss typical of NAION. All subjects underwent automated perimetry, disc photography and optic coherence tomography and/or fluorescein angiography to evaluate optic nerve function and perfusion.ResultsFour patients were found to have sectoral or diffuse optic disc swelling without visual acuity or visual field loss; the fellow eye of all four had either current or prior NAION or a 'disc at risk' configuration. Over several weeks of clinical surveillance, each patient experienced sudden onset of visual field and/or visual acuity loss typical for NAION.ConclusionsCurrent treatment options for NAION once vision loss occurs are limited and may not alter the natural history of the disorder. Subjects with NAION may have disc swelling for 2-10 weeks prior to the occurrence of visual loss, and with the development of new therapeutic agents, treatment at the time of observed disc swelling could prevent vision loss from NAION.

The purpose of the article is to reveal the potential of cognitive grammar for English learning. The author shows how the reliance on the key concept of 'observational window' and the differentiation of two opposite strategies of human cognition – direct (“I SEE”) and indirect (“I KNOW”) – facilitates acquisition of the aspectual-temporal system of the English verb. By the cognitive analysis of the meaning of the indefinite verbal aspect, the author proves that the key to successful foreign language communication is students' awareness of the meaning that English speakers keep in mind at the moment of speech production, when the 'observational window' is closed. The results of the work can be used in the practice of teaching and learning English in secondary schools and higher educational institutions, in advanced training courses.

Objectives The current study was conducted to compare between the conventional eye examination methods named as visual acuity, fundus examination, and field of vision evaluation in one hand and electrophysiologic methods of eye examination as visual evoked potential eye study in the other hand in detecting antimalarial medications toxicity on the eye macula in rheumatic patients. Materials and methods Fifty rheumatic patients group and fifty healthy control group age and sex matched were studied. Patients receiving anti-malarial medications for more than 6 months with cumulative dosage of at least 200 grams were included. All patients and control were subjected to full history and ocular examinations including visual acuity testing, fundus examination, visual field examination, and electrophysiological examinations (visual evoked potential) VEP. Results There was a statistical significant difference between percentage of patients and control group who having abnormal field of vision with P< 0.01, however there was no statistical significant difference between percentage of patients having abnormal visual acuity and control group with (P=0.06). There were statistical significant difference between percentage of patients and control group who having delayed P100 latency, low amplitude of P100 wave, abnormal (IOD) of P100 latency and amplitude with (P < 0.001). P100 latency was superior in sensitivity and specificity (57% & 98%) not only on field of vision but also superior on other VEP parameters, and both P100 latency and amplitude increased the sensitivity of VEP test to 62% and specificity to 100%. P100 latency of VEP is significantly correlated with duration of treatment with antimalarial drugs (r= 0.529 - P < 0.001 & r=0.285 - P=0.04). However, there is no significant correlation between duration of treatment and other VEP parameters. Conclusion We conclude that P100 latency of VEP can be useful parameter to detect CQ/HCQ retinal toxicity as it was superior in sensitivity and specificity and is significantly correlated to duration of treatment with antimalarial drugs, however, both field of vision examination and P100 amplitude parameters are inferior to P 100 latency in detecting macular changes.

Introduction The concern on the effect of pupillary dilatation on visual field parameters in patients with glaucoma comes from the fact that patients usually seek field examination after their pupils have been dilated for fundus examination. Aim To investigate the influence of pupillary dilatation on visual field testing in patients with glaucoma, by using automated static perimetry. Patients and methods A prospective comparative noninterventional clinical study was conducted on 20 eyes (11 patients) with open-angle glaucoma. Two consecutive visual field examinations were performed on each eye of all participants. The first was done on the undilated normal pupil size, whereas the second was done after dilating the pupil to 6–8 mm. Results After pupillary dilatation, fixation losses were significantly higher. There was no significant difference in false-negative or false-positive results. There was improvement in the mean deviation with no statistical significance. Pattern standard deviation showed also improvement, which was statistically significant. Discussion and conclusion It was found that pupillary dilatation caused variability and difference in the visual field parameters, which emphasizes the importance of consistent pupillary size in performing the serial automated visual field tests, especially in patients with glaucoma to allow standardized judgment on the patient’s progression.

As ecotourists become increasingly interested in snorkeling and diving with sharks, it is important to establish directives for safe interactions. The study considered eye contact between humans and approaching sharks, examining specifically whether an interruption in it owing to, for example, a person glancing at a camera or regarding where to retreat, would affect a shark's behavior. In standardized field tests, divers maintained or interrupted eye contact with approaching Caribbean reef sharks, Carcharhinus perezi. The results showed a significant difference in the sharks' approaches depending on whether the divers maintained or interrupted eye contact with them. Analyzing a retail layout accounting for how a shopper visually interacts with racks along their shopping path can help the retailer identify hot-warm-cold spots and better allocate products to racks in order to maximize revenue. We focus on estimating exposure (which locations are likely to be seen) and the intensity of exposure (how long are they seen) by accounting for the dynamic interaction between the human 3D field of regard with a physical rack layout. Our quantitative approach allows us to analyze the effect of varying layout design parameters (i.e., rack orientation, curvature, and height) on exposure considering both unidirectional and bidirectional travel. We also validate our approach through human participants in a virtual layout. We observed that curving racks in a layout with racks oriented 90° (i.e., perpendicular to the aisle) increase exposure by 3–121% over straight racks. Further, orientating curved racks at acute angles leads to substantially higher exposure (18–321%) over straight racks at 90°. Moreover, racks with a height just below shopper eye-height results in higher exposure over racks just above eye-height when top surfaces are accounted for as exposed. Considering the trade-off between exposure and layout floor space, when given an allowable 25% increase in floor space, we found feasible layouts that increased exposure ranging from 15–530% (over straight racks at 90°) depending on shopper scanning pattern, layout size, and traffic direction. Aim: To evaluate the role of papillary vitreous detachment in the pathogenesis of non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) by comparing the features of vitreopapillary interface between NAION patients and normal individuals., Methods: This study included 22 acute NAION patients (25 eyes), 21 non-acute NAION patients (23 eyes) and 23 normal individuals (34 eyes). All study participants underwent swept-source optical coherence tomography to assess the vitreopapillary interface, peripapillary wrinkles and peripapillary superficial vessel protrusion. The statistical correlations between peripapillary superficial vessel protrusion measurements and NAION were analysed. Two NAION patients underwent standard pars plana vitrectomy., Results: Incomplete papillary vitreous detachment was noted in all acute NAION patients. The prevalence of peripapillary wrinkles was 68% (17/25), 30% (7/23) and 0% (0/34), and the prevalence of peripapillary superficial vessel protrusion was 44% (11/25), 91% (21/23) and 0% (0/34) in the acute, non-acute NAION and control groups, respectively. The prevalence of peripapillary superficial vessel protrusion was 88.9% in the eyes without retinal nerve fibre layer thinning. Furthermore, the number of peripapillary superficial vessel protrusions in the superior quadrant was significantly higher than that in the other quadrants in eyes with NAION, consistent with the more damaged visual field defect regions. Peripapillary wrinkles and visual field defects in two patients with NAION were significantly attenuated within 1 week and 1 month after the release of vitreous connections, respectively., Conclusion: Peripapillary wrinkles and superficial vessel protrusion may be signs of papillary vitreous detachment-related traction in NAION. Introduction: Impairment of alertness, attention and performance associated with sleepiness and fatigue in nurses occur in night and long-term shifts that in the end of night shift reach to the maximum level can lead to traffic accidents when they returning home. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of night shift on psychomotor abilities of driving in nurses after shiftwork. Material and Method: A cohort study was carried out on 23 night shift and 24 day shift female nurses aged 20 to 40 at Sina Hospital in Tehran city, using the Vienna Test System (VTS). The concentration and selective attention, reaction time, pheriperal perception, and coordination before and after night and day shifts were measured. A multiple linear regression model and Backward stepwise selection method was used for analyses. Result: In the concentration and selective attention test, sum hits (p = 0.038) and in the visual perception test , divided attention (p =0.006) and visual field (p =0.019), and in the reaction time test the mean motor time (p =0.034) showed a significant adverse relationship with working in night shift, but the visomotor coordination variables did not show any significant correlation. Conclusion: The results showed that the concentration and selective attention, peripheral perception, and reaction time of psychomotor ability of driving were significantly adversely impaired in nurses after night shift. These results in evidence of the mechanism of increasing traffic accidents after night shift among nurses added to the previous studies in this subject.

Background/aim: While intraocular pressure (IOP) remains the only modifiable risk factor for glaucoma progression, the ultimate goal of glaucoma management is to preserve patients' functional vision and quality of life. To this end, minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGSs) aim to reduce IOP with minimal eye trauma. Commonly used MIGS devices include iStent technologies, which have well-documented IOP-reducing potential and favourable safety profiles. However, no study concluded on their effect on the rates of visual field (VF) changes. The aim of this meta-analysis is to determine the long-term effect of iStent technology implantation on glaucoma functional progression., Methods: Electronic medical literature databases were searched to identify studies reporting on iStent technologies. Reports with follow-up durations <12 months, retention rates <75% and missing VF data were excluded. Fifteen studies reporting on 1115 eyes were identified. The overall weighted mean VF mean deviation (MD) progression, IOP reduction and follow-up duration were calculated., Results: Weighted mean IOP at baseline was 19.0±3.1 mm Hg. At the end of a 37.9-month mean follow-up (range 12-96 months), a weighted mean 26.6% IOP reduction was achieved (range 15.2%-42.3%). Background/aims: The accuracy of pattern deviation (PD) in estimating the damage to the glaucomatous visual field (VF) in the central 10° in eyes with glaucoma and cataract is unclear., Methods: This retrospective study includes 63 eyes of 52 glaucoma patients who successfully underwent cataract surgery or cataract surgery plus iStent implantation. Using the Humphrey Field Analyser 10-2 test, VF was measured within 6 months preoperatively and postoperatively (VF pre and VF post , respectively). The mean total deviation values in VF post (mTD post ) indicates glaucomatous damage without cataract and the difference between this value and mean PD values in VF pre (mPD pre ) was evaluated (εmPD). The effect of cataract was then evaluated as the difference between mTD post and mTD pre (ΔmTD), while the effects of mTD post and ΔmTD on εmPD were also assessed. In addition, based on preoperative visual acuity (VA pre ) and VF pre , the optimal model for predicting mTD post was identified. The error of this method (εOptimalModel) was estimated as the difference against mTD post , which was compared with εmPD., Results: Compared with mTD pre , there was a significant improvement in mTD post (p=0.028). A significant difference was observed between mPD pre and mTD post (p<0.001). Further, εmPD significantly increased with the increase of mTD post or ΔmTD (p<0.001 and p=0.0444, respectively). Background: Despite, the potential clinical utility of 60-4 visual fields, they are not frequently used in clinical practice partly, due to the purported impact of facial contour on field defects. The purpose of this study was to design and test an artificial intelligence-driven platform to predict facial structure-dependent visual field defects on 60-4 visual field tests., Methods: Subjects with no ocular pathology were included. Participants were subject to optical coherence tomography, 60-4 Swedish interactive thresholding algorithm visual field tests and photography. The predicted visual field was compared with observed 60-4 visual field results in subjects. Average and point-specific sensitivity, specificity, precision, negative predictive value, accuracy, and F1-scores were primary outcome measures., Results: 30 healthy were enrolled. Three-dimensional facial reconstruction using a convolution neural network (CNN) was able to predict facial contour-dependent 60-4 visual field defects in 30 subjects without ocular pathology. Overall model accuracy was 97%±3% and 96%±3% and the F1-score, dependent on precision and sensitivity, was 58%±19% and 55%±15% for the right eye and left eye, respectively. Spatial-dependent model performance was observed with increased sensitivity and precision within the far inferior nasal field reflected by an average F1-score of 76%±20% and 70%±29% for the right eye and left eye, respectively., Conclusions: This pilot study reports the development of a CNN-enhanced platform capable of predicting 60-4 visual field defects in healthy controls based on facial contour. Aims: To evaluate retinal vasculature changes in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and whether the functional visual loss correlates with parameters obtained using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Materials and methods: OCT and OCTA images were collected from 116 POAG eyes and 40 normal eyes in a prospective, cross-sectional observational study. Glaucomatous eyes were further divided into three groups according to a Glaucoma Staging System. Measurements of macular vessel density, ganglion cell complex (GCC), and disk retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness were compared among groups. Results: The macular vessel density, GCC, and RNFL are significantly reduced in POAG compared to normal eyes that also corresponds to the severity of glaucoma (Kruskal–Wallis test with Dunnett's correction; p < 0.0001). Visual field mean deviation correlates significantly with macular vessel density (p = 0.0028, r = 0.3), GCC (p < 0.0001, r = 0.6), and RNFL (p = 0.008, r = 0.36) in POAG. There are significant correlations between GCC and RNFL (p < 0.0001, r = 0.76) as well as macular vessel density (p < 0.0001, r = 0.48). Increased age also correlates with reduced macular vessel density in both normal (p = 0.0002, r = 0.49) and glaucomatous eyes (p < 0.0001, r = 0.48), but a greater proportionate reduction of vessel density is seen in glaucomatous eyes. Conclusion: Reduced macular vessel density occurs in POAG despite of age-related changes, which also correlates with reductions in RNFL and GCC measurements. Architect, painter, and designer Herbert Bayer was a progenitor of modern exhibition design that emphasized the visual perception of its audiences; his associate and occasional collaborator, Alexander Dorner, also approached the conception of exhibitions by focusing on viewer experiences. Their similar emphasis on the centrality of subject-viewers and differing philosophies of perception and publics came together in the first United States touring retrospective of Bayer's work, organized by Dorner. The story of that exhibition, The Way Beyond "Art," is one episode within a larger, trans-continental conversation between two modern exhibition-makers. Bayer's galleries oriented information for a visitor's optical register, often at a massive, immersive scale. Dorner's conveyed experiences of cultural perception, allowing exhibited objects to be overpowered by "atmospheres," were meant to progress learning and action outside of exhibition spaces. In the book associated with the Way Beyond "Art" exhibition, Dorner advocated (now famously) for the museum to become a "powerhouse" for producing new energy, rather than exhibiting only existing artifacts and works. Their negotiations over Bayer's art within Dorner's "Way" ultimately were not only discussions about the roles of curator and artist in determining subject matter, but also reckonings over the degree of responsibility that an exhibition has to its public: whether the task of the exhibition is to situate and inform or to catalyze new cultural movement. A retail store's layout affects a shopper's visual experience and correspondingly the time spent in the store, navigation through the aisles, and allocation of attention and money across departments and categories. We show that alternate rack layouts allow for more of a rack's facing to appear in the shopper's visual field. To this end, we introduce a set of visual-spatial statistics comprised of visual measures (exposure and intensity) and spatial measures (space and aspect ratio) as a way to quantify the effect a retail layout has on a shopper's visual experience. We present both analytical and algorithmic approaches to capture the dynamics of a travelling shopper's field of regard with respect to a static rack layout. Results for the case of unidirectional shopper travel suggest that racks oriented at 30° from the direction of travel exhibit nearly 250% increase in exposure when compared to 90° racks; for bidirectional traffic, acute orientations still provide up to 150% higher exposure. Interestingly, rack orientations amenable to higher visual measures are not necessarily the best with respect to spatial measures. Aim was to study the effectiveness of neuromedin in the treatment of patients with primary glaucoma with compensated intraocular pressure (IOP). patients and methods. There were 40 patients (80 eyes): 10 eyes with early stage, 36 — advanced, 33 — advanced and 1 eye with end-stage glaucoma. IOP was offset by drops in the history of the 26 eyes underwent surgical treatment. Neuromedin was administered at 20 mg 2 times a day, 25 days. Efficacy was evaluated by visual status, fluid dynamics and morphometric parameters of the disk. results. Under the influence of neuromedin reduced the number of cattle and increased the number of zones with normal retinal sensitivity in the initial stage of 14.9%. In the advanced stage, the acuity improved to 66.6 per cent, in 33.3% of cases has not changed. In advanced stage, the visual acuity increased to 51.5% and 48.5% had not changed. In advanced stage, the effect is less pronounced: the number of livestock type 1 and 2 declined by 3.0±0.6 to 2.9±0.8% respectively, while the absolute number of livestock has not changed, the number of zones with normal sensitivity increased by 7.4±2,0%. Field of view is increased at all seeing eyes. Decreased true IOP, activation of the outflow chamber moisture. In initial and advanced stages significantly decreased the area of excavation, increased the area of the neuroretinal belt and the thickness of the retinal nerve fibers. In advanced stages it only changes the thickness of the retinal nerve fibers. More pronounced than in traditional therapy, the visual acuity improvement, the expansion of the field of view, the effect on retinal sensitivity and indicators HRT, probably due to a central action of neuromedin and activation of ganglion cells in a state of parabiosis. In recent years, in the literature there have been reports about the possible generality of the pathogenetic mechanisms of primary glaucoma and neurodegenerative diseases due to mitochondrial dysfunction, therefore, the positive dynamics of visual functions on the background of treatment with neuromedin can be explained by the ability of the drug to affect the energy potential of cells, to have a positive impact on cognitive function. Conclusion. Neuromedin has a positive impact on the state of visual functions, hydrodynamics and morphometric parameters of the disk.

Purpose: To explore the current research about the role of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON)., Methods: Studies in the literature that focused on OCT, OCTA and DON were retrieved by searching PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane databases and Clinical Trial before 20 June 2023. The methodological quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. The quantitative calculation was performed using Review Manager V.5.3., Results: Twelve studies met the eligibility criteria and were included. DON group presented lower macular ganglion cell complex in the overall, superior and inferior hemifields compared with the non-DON group. Furthermore, the ganglion cell layer and inner plexiform layer in DON group was thinner in contrast to the non-DON group. The optic nerve head vessel density was lower in the DON group than that in the non-DON group. A reduction of radial peripapillary capillary vessel density could be seen in the DON group than the non-DON group in overall, inside disc, peripapillary, superior-hemifield, temporal and nasal. Besides, the macular superficial retinal capillary layer of non-DON and DON is lower than the healthy control group., Conclusions: This study supported the potential value of OCT and OCTA metrics as novel biomarkers of DON. Aims: To evaluate whether baseline vessel density (VD) parameters derived from optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) is associated with the development of glaucomatous visual field (VF) defects in preperimetric glaucoma (PPG) patients., Methods: One eye from each of 200 consecutive PPG patients with a normal standard automated perimetry and OCT-A at baseline was retrospectively analysed. OCT-A was used to measure the circumpapillary VD (cpVD) and the parafoveal and perifoveal VD. The retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thicknesses were measured as reference standards. Two patient groups were stratified based on the development of repeatable glaucomatous VF loss. A Cox proportional hazards model was constructed to determine the predictive ability of OCT-A parameters for VF defects. The correlation between these baseline OCT-A parameters and the rate of global VF sensitivity loss (dB/year) was calculated using linear regression analysis., Results: During a 3.1-year average follow-up period, 18 eyes (9.0%) developed glaucomatous VF defects. At baseline, the lower inferior temporal cpVD (HR (95% CI)=0.934 (0.883 to 0.988); p=0.017) and thinner inferior RNFL (HR (95% CI)=0.895 (0.839 to 0.956); p=0.001) were predictive of glaucomatous VF loss. Background: Homonymous visual field (VF) defects are usually an indicator of serious intracranial pathology but may be subtle and difficult to detect. Artificial intelligence (AI) models could play a key role in simplifying the detection of these defects. This study aimed to develop an automated deep learning AI model to accurately identify homonymous VF defects from automated perimetry., Methods: VFs performed on Humphrey field analyser (24-2 algorithm) were collected and run through an in-house optical character recognition program that extracted mean deviation data and prepared it for use in the proposed AI model. The deep learning AI model, Deep Homonymous Classifier, was developed using PyTorch framework and used convolutional neural networks to extract spatial features for binary classification. Total collected dataset underwent 7-fold cross validation for model training and evaluation. To address dataset class imbalance, data augmentation techniques and state-of-the-art loss function that uses complement cross entropy were used to train and enhance the proposed AI model., Results: The proposed model was evaluated using 7-fold cross validation and achieved an average accuracy of 87% for detecting homonymous VF defects in previously unseen VFs. Recall, which is a critical value for this model as reducing false negatives is a priority in disease detection, was found to be on average 92%. Background/aims: To investigate the influence of peripapillary retinoschisis (PRS) on visual field (VF) test results in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG)., Methods: Thirty eyes of 30 patients with POAG who had PRS at least once were included. All eyes were followed-up for a minimum 5 years at 4-6-month intervals. The occurrence of PRS was determined by circumpapillary retinal nerve fibre layer B-scan on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). The global and regional VF deviations just prior to and immediately after PRS formation, or just prior to and immediately after PRS resolution (if it occurred), were compared. VF sensitivity within the region corresponding to the OCT sector where PRS occurred was determined according to the Garway-Heath map., Results: Global MD (p=0.345) and regional VF deviations (p=0.255) did not differ significantly between immediately after and just prior to PRS formation. Global MD (p=0.846) and regional VF deviations (p=0.758) were also similar between immediately after and just prior to PRS resolution., Conclusion: PRS has no short-term effect on the VF sensitivity. The results of comparative experimental testing of different filtrating type masks are presented in this study. Some of the most important functional properties have been tested on available models of Italian, French, British, Canadian, Swiss, American, and three models of Serbian military protective masks (M3 of the latest generation, as well as M2, and M2FV models of the previous generation). Using of the standardized testing methods, mask models have been tested on protection factor, dynamic resistance of the exhaust valve and its static permeability, the overall inhalation resistance of protective masks, field of view and optical properties. Based on experimental results obtained, it can be concluded that the Serbian mask M3 is on approximately same quality level as tested foreign masks, and above Serbian protective masks of the previous generation marked M2F and M2FV. Purpose: To investigate the relationship of macular intercapillary area (ICA) with macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness and central visual field sensitivity (CVFS) in normal tension glaucoma (NTG)., Methods: Seventy-eight early NTG eyes, 33 moderate-to-severe NTG eyes and 75 normal control eyes were cross-sectional evaluated. All participants underwent swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A; DRI-OCT, Topcon, Tokyo, Japan). A customised MATLAB program was used to quantify macular OCT-A metrics at central 3×3 mm macular region including vascular density (VD), foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, 10 largest ICA including FAZ area (ICA10&#95;IncFAZ) and excluding FAZ area (ICA10&#95;ExcFAZ). Generalised estimating equation regression models were performed to determine the relationships of OCT-A vascular metrics with GCIPL thickness in the macular region and CVFS., Results: NTG eyes had lower global VD, larger ICA10&#95;IncFAZ, and larger ICA10&#95;ExcFAZ than normal controls (all p≤0.016). In the multivariable analyses, decreased VD (β=-0.304, p=0.006) and increased ICA (β=-0.231 for ICA10&#95;IncFAZ and β=-0.259 for ICA10&#95;ExcFAZ, all p≤0.042) were significantly associated with decreased GCIPL thickness in early NTG eyes but not in moderate-to-severe NTG eyes. Primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) usually presents as unilateral and has acute onset. In Arab population, the proportion of open- and closed-angle glaucoma is similar. To the best of our knowledge, chronic PACG in very young age is rare. We share a case report of a teenage girl with advanced glaucomatous changes and, on gonioscopy, had synechia and closed angle of anterior chamber. She was treated by bilateral laser iridotomy and topical glaucoma medication. The author concludes that, even at very young age, in the absence of predisposing factors for secondary glaucoma, the patient should be investigated for PACG and managed accordingly. Two observations made 29 years apart are the cornerstones of this review on the contributions of Dr Gordon T. Plant to understanding pathology affecting the optic nerve. The first observation laid the anatomical basis in 1990 for the interpretation of optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings in 2009. Retinal OCT offers clinicians detailed in vivo structural imaging of individual retinal layers. This has led to novel observations which were impossible to make using ophthalmoscopy. The technique also helps to re-introduce the anatomically grounded concept of retinotopy to clinical practise. This review employs illustrations of the anatomical basis for retinotopy through detailed translational histological studies and multimodal brain-eye imaging studies. The paths of the prelaminar and postlaminar axons forming the optic nerve and their postsynaptic path from the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus to the primary visual cortex in humans are described. With the mapped neuroanatomy in mind we use OCT-MRI pairings to discuss the patterns of neurodegeneration in eye and brain that are a consequence of the hard wired retinotopy: anterograde and retrograde axonal degeneration which can, within the visual system, propagate trans-synaptically. The technical advances of OCT and MRI for the first time enable us to trace axonal degeneration through the entire visual system at spectacular resolution. The aim of the study is to understand the nature of blind spots in the vision of drivers of Large Goods Vehicles caused by vehicle design variables such as the driver eye height, and mirror designs. The study was informed by the processing of UK national accident data using cluster analysis to establish if vehicle blind spots contribute to accidents. In order to establish the cause and nature of blind spots six top selling trucks in the UK, with a range of sizes were digitized and imported into the SAMMIE Digital Human Modelling (DHM) system. A novel CAD based vision projection technique, which has been validated in a laboratory study, allowed multiple mirror and window aperture projections to be created, resulting in the identification and quantification of a key blind spot. The identified blind spot was demonstrated to have the potential to be associated with the scenarios that were identified in the accident data. The project led to the revision of UNECE Regulation 46 that defines mirror coverage in the European Union, with new vehicle registrations in Europe being required to meet the amended standard after June of 2015.
