Este trabalho apresenta o estudo de um modo de variabilidade que influencia a precipitação no Sul do Brasil e é chamado Modo Sul de precipitação. Será mostrado que a ocorrência de máximos (e mínimos) do Modo Sul de precipitação pode estar relacionada à ocorrência de eventos extremos no Rio Grande do Sul, como vendavais, enchentes, granizo e estiagens Utilizando a análise de componentes principais em dados de precipitação diária filtrados na banda 10-50 dias, são encontrados campos espaciais e temporais que representam a máxima variância de determinadas variabilidades, e neles são detectados Modos de Variabilidade de precipitação. Desta maneira, foi possível determinar este modo de variabilidade, que aparece bem configurado na região do Rio Grande do Sul. A série de componentes principais foi usada para a escolha desses eventos. O Modo Sul foi calculado para o período de 01/03/1982 à 31/05/2006. Foi possível identificar que os eventos extremos chuvosos ocorreram em maior número do que os eventos extremos secos. Na análise decadal verificou-se um aumento no número de eventos, quando comparada às décadas de 80, 90 e 2000. Vale ressaltar que o número de eventos da década de 2000 em relação à década de 80 (proporcionalmente) foi o mais expressivo. This work presents a study of a rainfall variability mode that acts in southern Brazil and is called "Modo Sul" of precipitation. It was tried to show that the occurrences of maximum (and minimum) of the "Modo Sul" of precipitation are related to the occurrence of extreme events in Rio Grande do Sul, as windstorm, flood, hail and drought. Using principal component analysis of daily filtered precipitation data for the 10-50 day band we found spatial pattern and temporal series that represent the maximum variance of certain variabilities, which are the modes of precipitation variability. Thus, it was possible to determine the mode of variability that appears well established in Rio Grande do Sul. The principal component series was used to select the extreme events. The "Modo Sul" was calculated for the period from 01/03/1982 to 31/05/2006. It was possible to realize that the extreme rainy events were more frequent than extreme dry events. In a decadal analysis an increase in the number of events was found when comparing the 80s, 90s and 2000. It is noteworthy that the number of events of 2000s compared with the 80s was proportionally the most expressive.

O título registrado na ata de defesa é "Impacto do clima futuro na fenologia do milho e no ciclo de vida da lagarta-do-cartucho (Spodoptera frugiperda) em Moçambique". In Mozambique, maize is a crop of great importance, occupying about 1/3 of the total cultivated area and with highest production concentrated in the central and northern regions of the country. It is known that, the development of maize plants and survival of ectothermal insects are dependent on the climate. However, the country is cyclically affected by extreme weather events, and the advent of climate change can exacerbate these impacts. Therefore, as a consequence of climate change, agricultural activity in the country may be compromised, both by the change in the regional climate pattern as well as in the agroecological environment. On the other hand, in 2017 the presence of an important agricultural pest, the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), was identified in Mozambique. This insect, with high capacity to attack several agricultural crops, but with preference for maize, has now become one of the main obastacles to increasing agricultural productivity causing huge economic losses in the country. Thus, considering that maize and fall armywarm has its phenology conditioned mainly by air temperature, the goal of this research was to determine the impact of the future climate on maize crop phenology and the life cycle of fall armywarm in Mozambique. For this purpose, the regional model RegCM4 driving by global model HadGEM2-ES to simulate the present (1970-2000) and future (2070-2099) climate of Mozambique, was used. In the simulation of the future climate, two representative climate scenarios of the IPCC-AR5 were considered, namely RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. The daily mean air temperature data resulting from the model runs, complemented by cardinal temperatures, were used for the calculation the total thermal units through the Growing Degrees-Day by the bilinear method. The results indicate a spatio-temporal change in the climate pattern (air temperature) under both climate scenarios, relative to present climate in Mozambique. Predominantly, these changes lead to a significant reduction in the thermal needs available for the development of maize crop in the study domain. On the other hand, it is estimated the increase in the number of fall armyworm generations as a consequence of the reduction of the length of their life cycle in most of the country. Em Moçambique, o milho (Zea-mays L.) é uma cultura de grande importância, ocupando cerca de 1/3 do total da área cultivada e com maior produção concentrada nas regiões centro e norte do País. Sabe-se, entretanto, que o desenvolvimento das plantas de milho e a sobrevivência dos insetos de sangue-frio são dependentes do clima. Entretanto, o país é ciclicamente afetado por eventos extremos de natureza climática, e o advento das mudanças climáticas poderá exacerbar esses impactos. Consequentemente, a atividade agrícola no país poderá ficar comprometida, tanto pela mudança no padrão climático à escala sub-regional bem como no ambiente agroecológico. Por outro lado, em 2017 foi identificada em Moçambique a presença de uma praga agrícola importante, a lagarta-do-cartucho (Spodoptera frugiperda) (Lepidoptera:Noctuidae). Com alta capacidade de atacar diversas culturas agrícolas, mas com preferência para o milho, o inseto tornou-se um dos principais obstáculos para o aumento da produtividade agrícola ocasionando enormes prejuízos econômicos no país. Deste modo, considerando que a fenologia do milho e da lagarta-do-cartucho são dependentes do clima, principalmente da temperatura do ar, o objetivo dessa pesquisa foi determinar o impacto do clima futuro na fenologia da planta do milho e no ciclo de vida da lagarta-do-cartucho em Moçambique. Para esse propósito, foi usado o modelo RegCM4 “aninhado” ao modelo global HadGEM2-ES para simular o clima regional do período presente (1970-2000) e futuro (2070-2099) de Moçambique. Na simulação do clima futuro, foram considerados dois cenários climáticos representativos do IPCC-AR5, nomeadamente RCP4.5 e RCP8.5. Os dados de temperatura média diária decorrentes das rodadas do modelo, complementados pelos valores das temperaturas cardinais, foram usados para calcular a Soma Térmica pelos Graus-Dia através do método bilinear. Os resultados indicam para uma mudança espaço-temporal no padrão climático (temperatura do ar) em ambos os cenários climáticos, relativamente ao clima presente de Moçambique. Predominantemente, estas alterações induzem à uma redução significativa das necessidades térmicas disponíveis para o desenvolvimento da cultura do milho no domínio de estudo. Por outro lado, estima-se o aumento do número de gerações da largarta-do-cartucho do milho como consequência da redução da duração do ciclo de vida do inseto-praga na maior parte do país.

The flows induced by a complex topography influence at different scales the turbulent patterns and other meteorological aspects in the planetary boundary layer (CLP). Mainly, in southern Brazil, a geophysical flow forced by a descending topography, known as Vento Norte (VNOR; Portuguese for ”North Wind”), is characterised by the advection of warm and dry air with intense wind gusts from the north. In the present thesis the temporal and spatial scales of the VNOR and its interactions in an extensive region of southern Brazil are investigated and characterized. The study is divided into three articles. First, a significant VNOR case is analysed and its main characteristics are determined. The results show that the standard deviation of temperature is a good indicator of the beginning and demise of the VNOR phenomenon. From a micrometeorological point of view, the turbulent variables are intensified and the mechanically generated turbulence governs the evolution of the CLP. The second article identifies the frequency and spatial and temporal distribution of the VNOR phenomenon based on a climatological analysis over 11 years of observations. The study found that the average life cycle of the events is 8 hours and is directly related to the intensity of the wind gusts, i.e. the greater the magnitude of the gust reached, the longer the VNOR episode will be. The article also indicates that the VNOR phenomenon impacts a large area in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, with the characteristics being more pronounced in the region around the city of Santa Maria. The results suggest that this intensification is influenced by topographic forcing, i.e. the altimetric difference in the center of the state, which divides the plateau to the north from the central depression to the south. The third article showed that VNOR episodes force the formation of a neutral boundary layer. Under these conditions, multilevel vertical turbulent dispersion parameterisations were derived. Finally, these parameterisations were applied in a Lagrangean stochastic dispersion model to reproduce the contaminants’ concentrations observed in the neutral Praire Grass dispersion experiments. Os escoamentos induzidos por uma topografia complexa influenciam em diferentes escalas os padrões turbulentos e os distintos aspectos meteorológicos na camada limite planetária (CLP). Particularmente, no sul do Brasil, um escoamento geofísico forçado por uma topografia descendente, conhecido como Vento Norte (VNOR) é caracterizada por uma advecção de ar quente e seca com intensas rajadas de vento, proveniente da direção norte. Na presente tese, são investigadas e caracterizadas as escalas temporais e espaciais do VNOR e suas interações em uma extensa região do sul do Brasil. O estudo é dividido em 3 artigos. No primeiro, investiga-se um caso significativo de VNOR e se determina as suas principais características. Os resultados mostram que o desvio padrão de temperatura é um bom indicativo do início e do término do fenômeno VNOR. Do ponto de vista micrometeorológico, as variáveis turbulentas são intensificadas e a turbulência gerada mecanicamente governa a evolução da CLP. No segundo artigo, uma análise baseada em 11 anos de observações tem sido realizada para identificar a frequência e distribuição espacial e temporal do fenômeno VNOR. O estudo identificou que o ciclo médio de vida dos eventos é de 8 horas e está diretamente relacionado com a intensidade das rajadas de vento, ou seja, quanto maior a magnitude da rajada atingida, mais duradouro será o episódio de VNOR. Esse artigo também indica que o fenômeno VNOR impacta uma grande área do estado do Rio Grande do Sul, com as características intensificadas na região abrangendo a cidade de Santa Maria. Os resultados sugerem que essa intensificação é influenciada pelo forçante topográfico, isto é, pelo desnível altimétrico no centro do estado, que divide o planalto ao norte da depressão central ao sul. A análise apresentada no terceiro artigo mostrou que os episódios de VNOR forçam a formação de uma camada limite neutra. Nessas condições, foram derivadas parametrizações de dispersão turbulenta em múltiplos-níveis verticais. Finalmente, essas parametrizações foram aplicadas em um modelo de dispersão estocástico lagrangeano com o objetivo de reproduzir as concentrações de contaminantes observadas nos experimentos neutros de dispersão de Praire Grass.

Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq Ecuador is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change and climate variability phenomena that could significantly affect various sectors and aspects of human life, such as economy and agriculture. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most fundamental staple crops and feeds more than 50% of the world’s population. Its production needs to increase by 70% by 2050 to meet the growing requirement for food associated with a growing population and economic expansion. General circulation models (GCMs) suggest that increasing greenhouse gas intensities may affect the global climate. The future main challenges to food security presented by climate change call for extraordinary efforts and skill to simulate and foresee the relations concerning crop growth dynamics, the environment, and crop management. Here we used dynamically downscaled Regional Climate Model (RCM) data for the Ecuadorian domain to generate precipitation and air temperature climate projections (2070 – 2099) under three different climate change scenarios and a Crop Model to quantify climate change impact on rice crop. For this, the total Ecuadorian area was divided into three regions: Coastal (CO), Highlands (HL), and Amazon (AM), following political boundaries, and after that two main CO producer regions were analyzed. For the Representative Concentration Pathway (RPC) 2.6 temperature will have a mean change of 1.35, 1.55, and 1.21 ºC for CO, HL, and AM, respectively. Seasonally, June, July, and August (JJA) presented the largest shift with a positive change of 1.45 °C. A less significant mean shift is observed in December, January, and February (DJF) (Ecuadorian rainy season) presenting the lowest alteration with a mean delta change of 1.30 °C. The spatial change in productivity presented different patterns for Guayas and Los Rios. Our results showed that the RegCM4-VSM simulations for Guayas will have a negative impact on production under all climate scenarios (RCP 2.6, 4.5 and 8.5). The analysis is not only the first assessment of the impact of climate change on rice productivity using crop modelling, but it also provides solutions to projected deficiencies in the rice crop that alert Ecuador’s food security. Like this, climatic policies should be strengthened particularly in adaptation measures. O Equador é um dos países mais vulneráveis aos fenômenos de mudança e variabilidade climática que podem afetar significativamente vários setores e aspectos da vida humana, como a economia e a agricultura. O arroz (Oryza sativa L.) é uma das culturas básicas mais fundamentais e alimenta mais de 50% da população mundial. Sua produção precisa aumentar em 70% até 2050 para atender à crescente necessidade de alimentos associada ao crescimento populacional e à expansão econômica. Modelos de circulação geral (GCMs) sugerem que o aumento da concentração dos gases de efeito estufa pode afetar o clima global. Os principais desafios futuros para a segurança alimentar apresentados pelas mudanças climáticas exigem esforços e habilidades extraordinários para simular e prever as relações relativas à dinâmica de crescimento da cultura, ao meio ambiente e ao manejo da cultura. Aqui, usamos dados do Modelo Regional (RCM) em escala reduzida dinamicamente para o domínio equatoriano para gerar projeções de precipitação e temperatura do ar (2070 - 2099) em três cenários de mudança climática diferentes e um Modelo de cultura para quantificar o impacto da mudança climática na cultura do arroz. Para isso, a área total do Equador foi dividida em três regiões: Litoral (CO), Altiplano (HL) e Amazônia (AM), obedecendo a fronteiras políticas e, a partir daí, foram analisadas duas principais regiões produtoras de CO. Para a via de concentração representativa (RPC) 2.6, a temperatura terá uma mudança média de 1,35, 1,55 e 1,21 ºC para CO, HL e AM, respectivamente. Sazonalmente, junho, julho e agosto (JJA) apresentaram o maior deslocamento com uma variação positiva de 1,45 °C. Um aquecimento médio menos significativo é observado em dezembro, janeiro e fevereiro (DJF) apresentando a menor variaçaão média de 1,30 °C. A mudança espacial na produtividade apresentou padrões diferentes para Guayas e Los Rios. Nossos resultados exibiram que as simulações do modelo acoplado RegCM4-VSM terão um impacto negativo na produção para a provincia de Guayas em todos os cenários climáticos. A análise não é apenas a primeira avaliação do impacto da mudança climática na produtividade do arroz usando modelos de cultivo, mas também fornece soluções para as deficiências projetadas na safra de arroz que alertam a segurança alimentar do Equador. Assim, as políticas climáticas devem ser fortalecidas, principalmente nas medidas de adaptação.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES A monsoon system is characterized by large-scale seasonal wind reversal, due to the thermal gradient between continents and oceans, and that has well-defined dry and wet seasons. However, the South American Monsoon System (SAMS), unlike other monsoons, does not exhibit a change in wind direction, but rather a marked seasonal change in circulation and humidity. The SAMS occurs during the austral summer, with the formation of convection over the northwest of the Amazon region, which extends to the southeast of South America, progressively intensifying. One of the main characteristics of SAMS is the occurrence of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ), which is a quasi-stationary moisture convergence zone that can cause intense precipitation when active, or indirectly, its absence can generate a rainfall deficit, as ocurred in the austral summer of 2014/2015 in Southeastern Brazil. One of the importance of SAMS comes from the fact that sectors such as the economy, agriculture, water and energy resources and the livelihoods of a large part of the Brazilian population are heavily dependent on it. SAMS presents variability in several temporal scales, such as intraseasonal and interannual, which are already well detailed in the literature. However, its relationship with lower frequency variability is not fully known. Therefore, this work aims to investigate the relationship between decadal to multidecadal variability and SAMS, focusing on the ZCAS region, using atmospheric and oceanic variables. All study regions showed signs of decadal variability through wavelet analysis, however the most energetic and low-frequency signals were those from Amazon, mainly from 1970 onwards. Decadal precipitation anomalies of Amazon and North of Southeast showed high correlations with decadal anomalies of Pacific SST, characterizing a spatial pattern similar to that of Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and Interdecadal Pacific Oscilation (IPO) oscillations. Central-West and South of Southeast had correlations with some areas of Pacific, but these signs were not comprehensive. The combined empirical orthogonal function (EOFc) analysis was able to identify important characteristics of summer circulation in South America on a decadal scale. An intensification of northeast trade winds over the Atlantic was observed, together with an increase in air temperature and humidity in central range of Brazil. The series of temporal coefficients associated with EOFc dominant mode characterized the temporal evolution of SAMS in decadal scale and was defined as a monsoon index, the South American Monsoon Multidecadal Index (SAMMI). In general, the SAMMI had three phases: a negative one between 1937 and 1974, a minor and positive one from 1975 to 1995, and a negative one from 1996 to 2015, and presented a positive and significant correlation with PDO (+0.35 ) and IPO (+0.26) indices. SAMMI was also positively and significantly correlated with decadal precipitation anomalies of Central-West (+0.56), North of Southeast (+0.66) and South of Southeast (+0.59). SAMMI was able to identify the spatial variability of South American monsoon through the dominant mode of main atmospheric patterns, and it mainly resembled the temporal variability of both PDO and IPO. Um sistema de monção é caracterizado pela reversão sazonal do vento em grande escala, devido ao gradiente térmico entre continentes e oceanos e que possui as estações seca e chuvosa bem definidas. Contudo, o Sistema de Monção da América do Sul (SAMS), ao contrário das demais monções, não exibe uma mudança da direção dos ventos, mas sim uma marcada alteração sazonal de circulação e umidade. O SAMS ocorre durante o verão, com a formação de convecção sobre o noroeste da região Amazônica, que se estende para o sudeste da América do Sul, intensificando-se progressivamente. Uma das principais características do SAMS é a ocorrência da Zona de Convergência do Atlântico Sul (ZCAS), que é uma zona de convergência de umidade quase-estacionária que pode provocar chuvas intensas quando ativa, ou indiretamente, sua ausência pode gerar um déficit de precipitação, como o ocorrido no verão de 2014/2015 no Sudeste do Brasil. Uma das importâncias do SAMS decorre do fato de que os setores como economia, agricultura, recursos hídricos e energéticos e os meios de subsistência da grande parte da população brasileira são fortemente dependentes dela. O SAMS apresenta variabilidades em diversas escalas temporais, como a intrasazonal e a interanual, as quais já estão bem detalhadas na literatura. Porém, a sua relação com variabilidades de mais baixa frequência não é totalmente conhecida. Por isto, este trabalho visa investigar a relação entre as variabilidades decadais a multidecadais e o SAMS, com foco na região da ZCAS, utilizando variáveis atmosféricas e oceânica. Todas as regiões de estudo apresentaram sinais de variabilidades decadais através da análise de ondeleta, contudo os sinais mais energéticos e de mais baixa-frequência foram os da Amazônia, principalmente a partir de meados de 1970. As anomalias decadais de precipitação da Amazônia e do norte do Sudeste apresentaram altas correlações com as anomalias decadais de TSM do Pacífico, caracterizando um padrão espacial semelhante ao das oscilações Pacific Decadal Oscilation (PDO) e Interdecadal Pacific Oscilation (IPO). Já o Centro-Oeste e o sul do Sudeste tiveram correlações com algumas áreas do Pacífico, porém estes sinais não foram abrangentes. A análise de funções ortogonais empíricas combinadas (EOFc) foi capaz de identificar características importantes da circulação de verão na AS em escala decadal. Observou-se uma intensificação dos ventos alísios de nordeste sobre o Atlântico, juntamente com um aumento da temperatura do ar e da umidade na faixa central do Brasil. A série dos coeficientes temporais associada ao modo dominante da EOFc caracterizou a evolução temporal do SAMS na escala decadal e foi definida como um índice de monção, o South American Monsoon Multidecadal Index (SAMMI). De modo geral, o SAMMI teve três fases: uma negativa entre 1937 e 1974, uma menor e positiva de 1975 a 1995, e outra negativa desde 1996 até 2015, e apresentou correlação positiva e significativa com os índices da PDO (+0,35) e da IPO (+0,26). O SAMMI também ficou correlacionado positivamente e significativamente com as anomalias decadais de precipitação do Centro-Oeste (+0,56), norte do Sudeste (+0,66) e sul do Sudeste (+0,59). O SAMMI conseguiu identificar a variabilidade espacial da monção da América do Sul através do modo dominante dos principais padrões atmosféricos, e assemelhou-se principalmente com a variabilidade temporal de ambas PDO e IPO.

This present research aims to apply statistical models of time series for the forecast of seasonal rainfall in sub-regions of the South, Southeast and Midwest regions of Brazil, investigating whether the models of Integrated Autoregressive classes and Moving Averages that take into account the seasonal component (SARIMA), Integrated Autoregressive and Moving Averages that considers a seasonal component and allows the entry of exogenous variables (SARIMAX), Exponential Smoothing and Combined can be used as a support tool for the dynamic models in forecasting monthly accumulation. In order to carry out the study, data from the historical series corresponding to the accumulated monthly combination, extracted from Xavier et al., (2015) from the South, Southeast and Midwest regions of Brazil, between latitudes (20,625° S and 33, 62° S) and longitudes (42.62° W and 57.62° W) in the period from January 1st, 1980 to December 31st, 2013. These data were interpolated to 1o latitude by 1o longitude, being the series the central point. In total, 107 historical series of accumulated monthly graduation were defined, containing each 408 basic series (months). The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) series selected for the same period with 5º latitude by 5º longitude, being the series a central point, comprised in the range between 60ºN and 60ºS, belonging to the ERSSTv5 data set from NOAA (Huang et al., 2017). 1418 historical series of SST were obtained, with each series containing 408 observations. To adjust the models, RStudio software was used. The influence of SST in the sub-regions was determined through the Person correlation. The quality of point forecasts was evaluated by means of the absolute percentage of errors. The predictions were categorized using the quantile technique. The Deibol-Mariano test was used to verify if there is a statistically significant difference between the predictions of the models. The sub-regions with similarities in monthly accumulated precipitation were defined by cluster analysis. The technique determined five similar sub-regions: South Sub-region 1, South Sub-region 2, South Sub-region 3, Southeast / Center 1 and Southeast / Midwest 2. The models proposed for the quarterly seasonal forecasts are adjusted: summer, autumn, winter and spring. The best forecast results for the three South sub-regions were obtained from the autumn and spring period, followed by summer. In the winter period, the models encountered difficulties in adjusting and forecasting, in view of the high variability contained in the time series for these periods. In the Southeast / Midwest regions, models were tested for the months from November to March (extended summer), which is considered a rainy season. The models demonstrated an excellent fit and performance for both regions with errors in point forecasts of around 14% Southeast / Midwest 1 sub-region and 18% Southeast / Midwest 2 sub-region, with no statistically significant difference between the predictions of the tested models. For these sub regions, a strong influence of the SST in the accumulated monthly rainfall must be considered. It is concluded that the proposed ST forecasting models can be used as a tool to support the dynamic models for the forecast of monthly accumulated precipitation in the surveyed regions, with emphasis on the SARIMA model. A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo aplicar modelos estatísticos de séries temporais para a previsão da precipitação pluviométrica sazonal em sub-regiões das regiões Sul, Sudeste e Centro-Oeste do Brasil, investigando se os modelos das classes Autoregressivos Integrados e de Médias Móveis que levam em consideração a componente sazonal (SARIMA), Autoregressivos Integrados e de Médias Móveis que consideram a componente sazonal e permitem a entrada de variáveis exógenas (SARIMAX), Alisamento Exponencial e Combinados podem ser usados como ferramenta de apoio aos modelos dinâmicos na previsão da precipitação acumulada mensal. Para realização deste estudo foram considerados os dados da série histórica correspondente à precipitação acumulada mensal, extraídos de Xavier et al., (2015) das regiões Sul, Sudeste e Centro-Oeste do Brasil, compreendidas entre as latitudes (20,625°S e 33,62°S) e longitudes (42,62°W e 57,62°W) no período de 01 de janeiro de 1980 a 31 de dezembro de 2013. Estes dados foram interpolados para 1º latitude por 1º de longitude, sendo a série um ponto central. No total foram obtidas 107 séries históricas de precipitação acumulada mensal, contendo cada série 408 observações (meses). As séries de Temperatura da Superfície do Mar (TSM) selecionadas para o mesmo período com 5º de latitude por 5º de longitude, sendo a série um ponto central, compreendida na faixa entre 60º Norte e 60º Sul pertencentes ao conjunto de dados ERSSTv5 da NOAA (Huang et al., 2017). Obteve-se 1418 séries históricas de TSM, contendo cada série 408 observações. Para ajuste dos modelos utilizou-se o software RStudio. Determinou-se a influência da TSM nas sub-regiões através da correlação de Person. Avaliou-se a qualidade das previsões pontuais por meio da média percentual absoluta dos erros. Categorizou-se as previsões mediante a técnica quantílica. Utilizou-se o teste Deibol-Mariano para verificar se há diferença estatística significativa entre as previsões dos modelos. As sub-regiões com similaridades de precipitação acumulada mensal foram definidas pela análise de agrupamento. A técnica determinou cinco sub-regiões similares: Sub-região Sul 1, Sub-região Sul 2, Sub-região Sul 3, Sub-região Sudeste/Centro 1 e Sub-região Sudeste/Centro-Oeste 2. Para a região Sul foram ajustados os modelos propostos para as previsões sazonais trimestrais: verão, outono, inverno e primavera. Os melhores resultados de previsão para as três sub-regiões Sul foram obtidos para o período de outono e primavera, seguidas do verão. No período de inverno os modelos encontraram dificuldades de ajuste e previsões, tendo em vista a alta variabilidade contida nas séries temporais para esses períodos. Nas regiões Sudeste/Centro-Oeste testou-se os modelos para os meses de novembro a março (verão estendido), que é considerado período chuvoso. Os modelos demonstraram um excelente ajuste e desempenho para ambas as regiões com erros nas previsões pontuais em torno de 14% sub-região Sudeste/Centro-Oeste 1 e 18% sub-região Sudeste/Centro-Oeste 2, não havendo diferença estatística significativa entre as previsões dos modelos testados. Há de se considerar para essas sub-regiões uma forte influência da TSM na precipitação acumulada mensal. Conclui-se que os modelos propostos de previsão de ST podem ser usados como uma ferramenta de apoio aos modelos dinâmicos para a previsão da precipitação acumulada mensal nas regiões pesquisadas, com destaque para o modelo SARIMA.

This work aims to carry out a quantitative and qualitative comparative assessment of the atmospheric patterns presented by Santos (2012) with the output of weather forecasting models, in order to predict the location of the occurrence of rain events with greater accuracy. For this, 3 precipitation events were selected in which there was an accumulation greater than 50 mm in 24 hours. The forecast data obtained for comparisons with the Santos (2012) patterns were the GFS (Global Forecast System) forecasts, using their daily departures from 12 UTC to 48 hours of forecast. GFS data was stored from January 2017 to June 2019, in the form of a database. The variables used were pressure at mean sea level, layer thickness between 500 hPa and 1000 hPa, geopotential height at 500 hPa, zonal wind component at 850 hPa, southern wind component at 850 hPa, specific humidity at 850 hPa, temperature air at 850 hPa, zonal wind component at 200 hPa and southern wind component at 200 hPa. The simulations obtained and the Santos (2012) patterns , were converted to matrices and thus applied to Pearson’s correlation test, to verify the quantitative similarity of the GFS simulations with the 5 Santos (2012) patterns . Event 1, registered on July 20, 2018, was identified as a cold front, associated with a cyclogenesis over the Atlantic Ocean and showing greater similarity with Santos (2012) Pattern 3 . Quantitatively, a similarity with Pattern 3 was also identified, observing the mean sea level in pressure, a variable that showed a clearer behavior in differentiating the forecast with the patterns, a correlation of 0.84 in the forecast 24 hours before the event and 0.854 in forecast 48 hours before the event. Event 2, recorded on July 25, 2018, is due to a suptropical Cyclonic Vortex in High Levels, resulting from the breaking of the excavated axis at 500 hPa. Qualitatively, this event is similar to Pattern 2, but quantitatively it was not possible to identify a higher correlation index. Event 3, observed an mesoscale convective system (MCS), with characteristics of a prefrontal with a 500 hPa dug over the Andes, low thickness gradient and intensification of pressure over southeastern South America, are similar to Santos (2012) pattern 1 on November 17, 2018, showed a correlation of 0.8412 in the 24-hour simulation and 0.783 in the simulation 48 hours before the event. Thus, perhaps to the limited number of cases analyzed in this study, the recognition was satisfactory for the cold front and MCS patterns, since these are the main precipitating systems in Rio Grande do Sul. Este trabalho tem como objetivo, realizar uma avaliação comparativa quantitativa e qualitativa dos padrões atmosféricos apresentados por Santos (2012) com as saídas de modelos de previsão do tempo, com a finalidade de prever a localização da ocorrência dos eventos de chuvas com uma maior acurácia e utilizar um método de previsão por padrões para prever precipitações extremas sobre o Rio Grande do Sul (RS). Para isso, foram selecionados 3 eventos de precipitação em que houve o acumulado superior a 50 mm em 24 horas. Os dados de previsão obtidos para as comparações com os Padrões de Santos (2012), foram as previsões do modelo GFS (Global Forecast System), utilizadas suas saídas diárias dos horários das 12 UTC para 48 horas de previsão. Os dados do GFS foram armazenados desde janeiro de 2017 até junho de 2019, na forma de um banco de dados. As variáveis utilizadas foram pressão ao nível médio do mar, espessura da camada entre 500 hPa e 1000 hPa, altura geopotencial em 500 hPa, componente zonal do vento em 850 hPa, componente meridional do vento em 850 hPa, umidade específica em 850 hPa, temperatura do ar em 850 hPa, componente zonal do vento em 200 hPa e componente meridional do vento em 200 hPa. As simulações obtidas e os padrões de Santos (2012), foram convertidos para matrizes e assim aplicados ao teste de correlação de Pearson para verificar a semelhança quantitativa das simulações do GFS com o 5 Padrões de Santos (2012). O evento 1, registrado no dia 20 de julho de 2018, foi identifico como uma frente fria, associado a uma ciclogênese sobre o Oceano Atlântico e demostrando maior semelhança com o Padrão 3 de Santos (2012). Quantitativamente também foi identificada semelhança com Padrão 3, observando na pressão o nível médio do mar, variável que apresentou um comportamento mais claro em diferenciar a previsão com os Padrões, correlação no valor de 0,84 na previsão 24 horas antes do evento e 0,854 na previsão de 48 horas antes do evento. O evento 2, registrado no dia 25 de julho de 2018, se deve a um VCAN suptropical, proveniente da quebra do eixo do cavado em 500 hPa. Qualitativamente, este evento tem semelhança com o Padrão 2, porém quantitativamente não foi possível identificar um índice de maior correlação. O evento 3, observado um SCM, com características de um pré frontal com um cavado em 500 hPa sobre os Andes, baixo gradiente de espessura e intensificação da pressão sobre o sudeste do América do Sul, assemelham-se ao Padrão 1 de Santos (2012) no dia 17 de novembro de 2018, apresentou correlação de 0,8412 na simulação 24 horas e 0,783 na simulação 48 horas antes do evento. Apesar do número restrito de casos analisados neste estudo, o reconhecimento mostrou-se satisfatório dos padrões de frente fria e SCM, visto que esses são os principais sistemas precipitantes do RS.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES The Central America region, in specific Honduras, is located in an exposed area to the manifestation of climatic phenomena, such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which propitiates variations in the precipitation regime. In the last few years this highlighted region has been little studied, so the understanding of ENSO spatial-temporal climatic variability is of vital importance for regional water, energy and agricultural planning. The main purpose of this work was to evaluate the influence of ENSO on the irregular precipitations and its impact on main agricultural crops in Honduras. For this aim, precipitation data reanalysis was used from 1979-2018 period. Furthermore, data from Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) was obtained in order to find its relationship alongside precipitation. Time lags significance tests (with and without) were also applied for correlation between variables. Outcomes revealed that for Eastern, Central and Northern regions of Honduras, El Niño years showed positive precipitation anomalies during the first rainy season and negative anomalies in succeeding seasons. Instead, La Niña years cause a precipitation postponement in the first rainy season across the country. When analyzing lags, El Niño strengthens in the southern region in the second month and expands in the fourth or fifth after being aligned. Finally, La Niña presented positive correlations in the northern part of the country after the fourth month. Conclusively, corn, beans and coffee production water requirements proved to be favorable throughout the country with the exclusion of Central region for corn and South region for coffee cultivation, together, due to the greater occurrence of droughts caused by El Niño. A região Central da América, em destaque Honduras, encontra-se em uma área vulnerável à ocorrência de fenômenos climáticos, tal como El Niño – Oscilação Sul (ENOS) que propicia alterações no regime pluviométrico. Esta região em destaque, ainda é pouco estudada na literatura, por tanto a compreensão da variabilidade climática espaço-temporal do ENOS é de suma importância para o planejamento hídrico, energético e agrícola da região. Utilizando analises estatísticas variadas, objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar a influência do ENOS nas precipitações anômalas e seu impacto nas principais culturas agrícolas de Honduras. Para isso, foram utilizados dados de reanálise de precipitação no período de 1979-2018. Além disso, dados do Índice Multivariado de ENOS (MEI) com a finalidade de encontrar a relação entre o MEI e a precipitação. Foram aplicados também, teste de significância com e sem defasagem temporal (lags) para correlação entre o MEI e a precipitação. Os resultados mostraram que os anos de El Niño propicia anomalias positivas de precipitação durante a primeira temporada de chuva e anomalias negativas na segunda temporadas, para a região Leste, Centro e Norte de Honduras. Por outro lado, os anos de La Niña causa um atraso na precipitação no primeiro período de chuva em todo o país. Quando analisados os lags, o El Niño se intensifica na região Sul no segundo mês e se expande no quarto ou quinto mês após ter sido configurado. Já a La Niña demonstrou correlações positivas no Norte do país após o quarto mês. Os requerimentos hídricos para a produção do milho, feijão e café mostraram-se favorável em todo pais, com exceção da região central para a produção de milho, e na região Sul para o cultivo de café devido a maior frequência de secas causadas pelo El Niño.

In Brazil, each region has a characteristic rainfall regime, according to the atmospheric systems that operate. Regions such as southeastern Brazil, for example, where there is a high demographic, industrial and commercial concentration, the lack of rain causes chaos in the society and economy of the country. On the other hand, when excessive precipitation occurs, society suffers from the disruption of cities in the face of high rainfall levels. Facts like these are very common when systems such as the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) occur, a deep convection zone that acts on the southeast and midwest of Brazil. The SACZ occurs during the extended summer, from October to March and is essential for the maintenance of the pluviometric regime in the region. However, the representation of precipitation by numerical models requires calibrations for Brazilian conditions. In view of this, this study aimed to analyze the rainfall simulations of the Brazilian Global Atmospheric Model (BAM), during the period from 1990 to 2013 and compare with observed data, in order to evaluate the model’s performance in the representation of rain in Brazil . The data used in this study were, daily data of precipitation, wind at 200hPa and 850hPa of the BAM model (1°x1°), observed daily data of precipitation from Brazil, interpolated in high spatial resolution (0.25°x0.25°) and daily wind data from the ERA-Interim reanalysis (0.75°x0.75°). The analyzes were divided into two chapters, first the climatology of precipitation in Brazil was addressed, during the year, during the rainy season and during 149 ZCAS events reported in the analyzed period, then the simulations of the BAM model in the representation of rain and atmospheric circulation during two selected ZCAS events. In the analyzes of the first chapter, the BAM simulations consistently represented the spatial distribution of the rainfall, but there was an underestimation of the amount of accumulated rain. The results obtained in chapter 2, the BAM simulations represented the precipitation and atmospheric circulation during the ZCAS events, but with peculiarities of the model, such as the delay in the configuration of the atmospheric circulation patterns expected during ZCAS events, compared to the reanalysis data. Uma das principais variáveis meteorológicas para a definição do clima de cada região é a precipitação. No Brasil, cada região possui um regime pluviométrico característico, de acordo com os sistemas atmosféricos que atuam em cada localidade. Regiões como o sudeste brasileiro, por exemplo, em que concentra alto índice demográfico, indústrias e comércio a falta de chuva provoca um caos na sociedade e economia do país como um todo. Por outro lado, quando ocorre precipitação em excesso, a sociedade sofre com a desestrutura das cidades diante da ocorrência de altos índices pluviométricos. Fatos como estes são muito comuns quando ocorre sistemas como a Zona de Convergência do Atlântico Sul (ZCAS), uma zona de convecção profunda que atua sobre o sudeste e centro-oeste do Brasil. A ZCAS ocorre durante o verão estendido, de outubro-março e é essencial para a manutenção do regime pluviométrico na região. Entretanto, a representação da precipitação pelos modelos numéricos necessita de calibrações adequadas para as condições brasileiras. Em vista disso, este estudo teve como objetivo analisar as simulações de precipitação do Modelo Global Atmosférico Brasileiro (BAM), durante o período de 1990 a 2013 e comparar com dados observados, a fim de avaliar o desempenho do modelo na representação de chuva no Brasil. Os dados utilizados neste estudo foram, dados diários de precipitação, vento em 200hPa e 850hPa do modelo BAM (1°x1°), dados diários observados de precipitação do Brasil, interpolados em alta resolução espacial (0,25°x0,25°) e dados diários de vento da reanálise do ERA-Interim (0,75°x0,75°). As análises foram divididas em dois capítulos, primeiro foi abordada a climatologia da precipitação no Brasil, durante o ano, durante o período chuvoso e durante 149 eventos de ZCAS registrados no período analisado, depois foram avaliadas as simulações do modelo BAM na representação da chuva e circulação atmosférica durante dois eventos de ZCAS selecionados. Nas análises do primeiro capítulo, as simulações do BAM representaram de forma coerente a distribuição espacial da precipitação, porém houve subestimação da quantidade de chuva acumulada. Os resultados obtidos no capítulo 2 as simulações do BAM representaram a precipitação e circulação atmosférica durante os eventos de ZCAS, porém com peculiaridas do modelo, como o atraso na configuração dos padrões atmosféricas de circulação esperados durante eventos de ZCAS, comparadas aos dados de reanálise.

Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq The objectives of this thesis were (i) to develop a climate risk zoning for gladiolus in the predicted end-century climate change scenarios in Rio Grande do Sul; (ii) to apply a crop forecasting methodology to predict the date of harvest of gladiolus; (iii) to understand how water deficit affects gladiolus growth and development (iv) to understand how occur the decline in transpiration and leaf growth in a drying soil for different cultivars of gladiolus on diferent developmental stages. The PhenoGlad model was used to determine the recommended periods for gladiolus planting throughout the year in RS under three climate change scenarios (RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). The model was run for daily planting dates (01January to 31 December) and different crop development cycles. PhenoGlad has also been used to predict the harvest forecast of flower stems using historical weather data. Two field experiments were conducted with four cultivars of gladiolus submitted to two irrigation treatments: irrigated and non-irrigated. Three experiments were carried out in pots, with four gladiolus cultivars in different development stages and two water regimes: without water deficit and with water deficit. FATS, transpiration and leaf growth were measured daily. In both experiments, the phenological development was evaluated daily and, at the time of harvest point, the quantitative parameters of the floral stems were measured. Warmer regions such as Uruguaiana and Iraí have the shortest recommended planting period throughout the year in the three climate scenarios, and planting between August and December is not recommended due to the higher chance of damage from high temperatures. Colder regions such as Bom Jesus will be favored in climate change scenarios. To meet the demand for gladiolus during the warmer periods of the year, techniques will need to be developed to reduce damage from high temperatures in the crop, such as more tolerant cultivars or the use of shading screens on the crop. In the first three forecasts in RS, the RMSE ranged from 7 to 4.5 days. In SC, the RMSE ranged from 5.5 to 3.4 days. These errors are acceptable from a practical point of view because they are predicted about 45 days before harvest. With this forecasting methodology, farmers can know in advance about the chances of harvesting at the desired time. The duration of the gladiolus development cycle was longer in the non-irrigated treatment. The water deficit also affects the quality of the flower produced, due to the lower plant growth, however, it does not affect the dry mass partition. Therefore, supplemental irrigation in gladiolus is essential for the production of quality floral stems. The FTSW threshold for NTR is higher when it occurs near the reproductive phase and the floral stems produced are of inferior quality. When the water deficit occurs during the vegetative phase, the rate of leaf appearance occurs more slowly, delaying the harvesting point of the flower stems. Os principais objetivos desta tese foram (i) desenvolver um zoneamento de risco climático para a cultura do gladíolo nos cenários de mudança climática previstos para o final do século no Rio Grande do Sul; (ii) aplicar a metodologia de previsão de safra para prever a data da colheita do gladíolo; (iii) entender como o déficit hídrico afeta o crescimento e desenvolvimento de gladíolo (iv) compreender como ocorre o declínio na transpiração e no crescimento foliar em função da FATS para diferentes cultivares de gladíolo em diferentes estágios de desenvolvimento. O modelo PhenoGlad foi utilizado para determinar os períodos recomendados para plantio de gladíolo ao longo do ano no RS em três cenários de mudança climática (RCP2.6, RCP4.5 e RCP8.5). O modelo foi rodado para datas de plantio diárias (de 01 janeiro a 31 dezembro) e diferentes ciclos de desenvolvimento da cultura. O PhenoGlad também foi usado para prever a data de colheita das hastes florais através de dados meteorológicos históricos. Foram realizados dois experimentos de campo com quatro cultivares de gladíolo submetidas a dois tratamentos de irrigação: irrigado e não irrigado. Três experimentos foram realizados em vasos, com quatro cultivares de gladíolo em diferentes estágios de desenvolvimento e dois regimes hídricos: sem déficit hídrico e com déficit hídrico. A FATS, a transpiração e o crescimento foliar foram medidos diariamente. Em ambos os experimentos, o desenvolvimento fenológico foi avaliado diariamente e, no momento da colheita, os parâmetros quantitativos das hastes florais foram medidos. Regiões mais quentes como Uruguaiana e Iraí apresentam o menor período recomendado para plantio ao longo do ano nos três cenários climáticos e, plantios entre agosto e dezembro não são recomendados devido a maior chance de danos por altas temperaturas. Regiões mais frias como Bom Jesus serão favorecidas nos cenários de mudança climática. Para atender a demanda de gladíolo durante os períodos mais quentes do ano, será necessário desenvolver técnicas para reduzir os danos por altas temperaturas na cultura, como cultivares mais tolerantes ou o uso de telas de sombreamento sobre a cultura. Nas três primeiras previsões no RS, o RMSE variou de 7 a 4,5 dias. Em SC, o RMSE variou de 5,5 a 3,4 dias. Esses erros são aceitáveis do ponto de vista prático, porque é uma previsão realizada cerca de 45 dias antes da colheita. Com essa metodologia de previsão, os agricultores podem conhecer antecipadamente sobre as chances de o ponto de colheita ocorrer no momento desejado. A duração do ciclo de desenvolvimento do gladíolo foi maior no tratamento não irrigado. O déficit hídrico também afeta a qualidade da flor produzida, devido ao menor crescimento das plantas, no entanto, não afeta a partição da massa seca. Portanto, a irrigação suplementar no gladíolo é essencial para a produção de hastes florais de qualidade. A FATS crítica para NTR é maior quando ocorre próximo à fase reprodutiva e, as hastes florais produzidas têm qualidade inferior. Quando o déficit hídrico ocorre durante a fase vegetativa, a taxa de aparecimento das folhas ocorre mais lentamente, atrasando o ponto de colheita das hastes florais.

Corn is one of the most important summer crops around the world and this grain plays an important role in the sustainability and food security of the world's population. Agricultural modeling is an important tool in planning agricultural activities. Of the existing maize models, the CSM-Ceres-Maize and Hybrid-Maize models are easy-to-use process-based models that can simulate maize growth, development and yield. The objectives of this dissertation were (a) to compare different methods of estimating genetic parameters in the CSM-Ceres-Maize model, (b) to compare the capacity of the CSM-Ceres-Maize and Hybrid-Maize models to simulate growth, development and productivity of maize with different genetic variability in a subtropical environment and (c) to simulate maize productivity in the Rio Grande do Sul State under future climate change scenarios using the Hybrid-Maize model. For the calibration of the models, field experiments were carried out during the 2013/14 and 2014/15 growing seasons, and for the evaluation of these models, data were collected in field experiment in the 2015/16 and 2017/18 growing seasons. Two improved maize cultivars, one of open pollination variety 'BRS Planalto' and one simple hybrid 'AS 1573PRO', and two 'Bico de Ouro' and 'Cinquentinha' were used. To simulate maize yields with different genetic variability in relation to future climatic scenarios, the scenarios RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 of the fifth IPCC report using the Hybrid-Maize model, were used. Simulations showed a decrease in maize yield in the northern half of the state, and up to 5.5 Mg ha-1, while in the southern half showed an increase in maize productivity in the period 2070-2098 in relation to the period 1975-2005. O milho é uma das principais culturas de verão ao redor do mundo e este grão desempenha um papel importante na sustentabilidade e segurança alimentar da população mundial. A modelagem agrícola é uma importante ferramenta no planejamento das atividades agrícolas. Dos modelos de milhos existentes, os modelos CSM-Ceres-Maize e Hybrid-Maize, são modelos de milho baseados em processos, de fácil utilização, que são capazes de simular o crescimento, o desenvolvimento e produtividade de milho. Os objetivos desta tese foram (a) comparar diferentes métodos de estimativa de parâmetros genéticos do modelo CSM-Ceres-Maize, (b) comparar a capacidade dos modelos CSM-Ceres-Maize e Hybrid-Maize em simular o crescimento, o desenvolvimento e produtividade de milho com diferente variabilidade genética em ambiente subtropical e (c) simular a produtividade de milho no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul em cenários futuros de mudança climática utilizando o modelo Hybrid-Maize. Para a realização da calibração dos modelos, foram realizados experimentos a campo durante os anos agrícolas 2013/14 e 2014/15, e para o teste destes modelos, foram coletados dados em experimento a campo nos anos 2015/16 e 2017/18. Foram utilizadas duas cultivares melhoradas de milho, uma variedade de polinização aberta ‘BRS Planalto’ e um híbrido simples ‘AS 1573PRO’, e duas cultivares crioulas de milho ‘Bico de Ouro’ e ‘Cinquentinha’. Para simular a produtividade de milho com diferente variabilidade genética diante a cenários climáticos futuros, foram utilizados os cenários RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5 e RCP 8.5 do quinto relatório do IPCC, utilizando o modelo Hybrid-Maize. As simulações mostraram diminuição da produtividade na metade norte do estado, e, até 5,5 Mg ha-1, enquanto que na metade sul mostraram um aumento na produtividade de milho no período de 2070-2098 em relação ao período de 1975-2005.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES Positive climate change trends and the increasing potential of climate impacts made crucial to adapt agricultural crops due to these changes and adjust the use of natural resources in a more sustainable way. The aim of the present work is to make a global warming impact preliminary analysis on phenological development of the foremost crops in Brazil. Thus, two representative concentration pathways (RCP2.6 and RCP8), climate change scenarios, were used, generated from Hadley Center Global Environment Model version 2 Earth System (HadGEM2-ES) and regionalized with Regional Climate Model version 4 (RegCM4) for forthcoming air temperature data series (2070-2099) that were paired with a reference series (1976-2005). In order to assess global warming impact on cotton, irrigated rice, corn, soybean and wheat crop development cycles, the concept of daily Thermal Sum (dTS, ° C day) was used, which establishes the fact that the rate of daily development of a plant is linked to air temperature, assuming the existence of cardinal temperatures Tb, Top and Tmax. Main results revealed that heating conditions of the RCP2.6 scenario approached the average air temperature (Ta) of the maximum development values (Top), contributing to a faster development and, therefore, a decrease in cycle duration. In Paraná state under RCP8.5 scenario heating conditions, adverse impacts are observed for corn, soybean, irrigated rice and wheat crops development. Same scenarios were observed in Center-West producing regions, were, in addition to lengthier phenological phases, crops will suffer thermal stress because the Ta approaches the maximum Tmax limits, which will lead to a reduction of the cultivable area. For the case of irrigated rice and wheat from Paraná, the negative effects are kinder, but might cause a small area reduction. As tendências das mudanças climáticas e o crescente potencial dos impactos climáticos vêm dando urgência na adaptação das culturas agrícolas e na mudança da utilização de recursos de forma mais sustentável. Este trabalho tem como principal objetivo fazer uma análise preliminar do impacto do aquecimento global no desenvolvimento fenológico das principais culturas agrícolas do Brasil. Para isso, foram utilizados dois cenários de mudanças climáticas, o RCP2.6 e RCP8.5, gerados a partir do modelo HadGEM2- ES (Hadley Centre Global Environment Model version 2 – Earth System) e regionalizados com o modelo regional RegCM4 (Regional Climate Model version 4) para séries de dados futuras de temperatura do ar (2070-2099) que foram com paradas com uma série de referência (1976-2005). Para avaliar o impacto do aquecimento global nos ciclos de desenvolvimento das culturas de algodão, arroz irrigado, milho, soja e trigo, foi utilizado o conceito de soma térmica diária (STd, °C dia), que se baseia no fato de que a taxa de desenvolvimento diário de uma planta está relacionada com temperatura do ar, pressupondo a existência de temperaturas cardinais Tb, Tot e Tmax. Os principais resultados mostram que as condições de aquecimento do cenário RCP2.6 aproximam a temperatura média do ar (Tm) dos valores de desenvolvimento máximo (Tot), contribuindo para um desenvolvimento mais rápido e, consequentemente, da diminuição da duração do ciclo. Já sob as condições de aquecimento do cenário RCP8.5, são observados impactos negativos para o desenvolvimento do milho, soja, arroz irrigado e trigo do Paraná. Para o milho e a soja, as regiões produtoras do Centro-Oeste, além de haver o prolongamento do tempo de desenvolvimento, as culturas sofrerão estresse térmico pelo fato de a Tm se aproximar dos limites máximos Tmax, o que proporciona uma redução da área cultivável para essas culturas. No caso do arroz irrigado e trigo do Paraná, os impactos negativos são mais brandos, mas podem ocasionar em uma pequena redução de área.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES In this PhD thesis, the usefulness of the insertion of climatic indicators in a statistical model for predicting rice and soybean yield in Rio Grande do Sul is presented. Initially, yield data of the two crops were separated into groups of homogeneous behavior in term of average yield. For soybean, the study period was from 1974 to 2013, excluding the 1983 crop because it was not included in the database. The northeast region of the State with the highest yield is highlighted, while the municipalities located in the northwest present series with lower average yield. In the rice crop, the study comprised the years 1990 to 2013 and the western and southern regions of the State show the highest average yield during the study period. In the municipalities of the central depression and near the Patos Lagoon the lowest average yield is observed. After this stage, lagged correlations were made between climatic indicators and a mean yield of each of the homogeneous groups in order to identify teleconnection patterns that influence the interannual variability of rice and soybean yield in the State. For soybean, the climatic indicators that presented the highest correlations were the Arctic Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation in addition to a region in the South Atlantic Ocean between 20°S/30°S and 20°W/40° W. Rice, in general, presented higher correlations than soybean. This fact highlighting mainly the indices referring to the oceanic and atmospheric components of the phenomenon El Niño Southern Oscillation and the index referring to Pacific Decadal Oscillation. To the highest correlation indexes with each homogeneous group, such as rice and soybean cultures, areas of Sea Surface Temperature with a high production correlation were added. Thereby a statistical regression model to crop forecast in Rio Grande do Sul may be elaborated. Through the Principal Component Regression method, the predictors for each group and culture were selected with the purpose of providing in October a yield estimate based on indicators obtained up to the month of September. October is when a major part of the soybean and rice are sown. The model shows good results, including as a support tool in the planning of rice and soybean harvest in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. As the advance in planting and crop development occurs the model can be updated with the inclusion of new index. It is also useful as a crop tracking tool and as an aid to eventual corrections of estimates that need to be made. Nesta pesquisa de doutorado, destaca-se a utilidade da inserção de indicadores climáticos em um modelo estatístico de previsão de produtividade de arroz e soja no Rio Grande do Sul. Inicialmente, dados de produtividade das duas culturas fornecidos pelo IBGE foram separados em grupos de comportamento homogêneo em termo da produtividade média. Para a soja, o período de estudo foi de 1974 a 2013, escluindo-se a safra de 1983 por não constar na base de dados. Destaca-se a região nordeste do Estado com maior produtividade, enquanto os municípios situados no noroeste apresentam as séries com menor produtividade média. Na cultura do arroz, o estudo compreendeu os anos de 1990 a 2013 e o oeste e sul do Estado apresentam a maior produtividade média ao longo do período de estudo e nos municípios da depressão central e próximos a Lagoa dos Patos são observadas a menor produtividade média. Após esta etapa, foram realizadas correlações defasadas entre indicadores climáticos e a produtividade média de cada um dos grupos homogêneos de forma a identificar padrões de teleconexão que exerçam influência na variabilidade interanual de produtividade de arroz e soja no Estado. Para a soja, os indicadores climáticos que apresentaram maiores correlações foram a Oscilação Ártica, a Oscilação do Atlântico Norte além de uma região no Oceano Atlântico Sul entre 20°S/30°S e 20°W/40°W. De forma geral, o arroz apresentou correlações mais elevadas que a soja, destacando-se, principalmente, os índices referentes as componentes oceânica e atmosférica do fenômeno El Niño Oscilação Sul e o índice referente a Oscilação Decadal do Pacífico. Além dos índices de maior correlação com cada grupo homogêneo, referente as culturas do arroz e da soja, foram adicionadas áreas de Temperatura da Superfície do Mar do oceano global com elevada correlação com a produtividade para a elaboração de um modelo estatístico de regressão para a previsão de safra no Rio Grande do Sul. Por meio do método da Regressão de Componentes Principais, foram selecionadas as combinações de índices que fornecessem a melhor previsão para cada grupo e cultura com o intuito de fornecer no mês de outubro, período em que se inicia a maior parte do plantio de soja e arroz no Estado, uma estimativa de produtividade baseada em indicadores obtidos até o mês de setembro. O modelo apresentou bons resultados, incluindo-se, assim, como ferramenta de apoio no planejamento de safra de arroz e soja no Estado gaúcho. À medida que ocorre o avanço no plantio e desenvolvimento das culturas, o modelo pode ser atualizado com a inclusão de novos índices e ser, também, útil como ferramenta de acompanhamento de safra e de auxílio para eventuais correções de estimativas que necessitem ser realizadas.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES In the southern summer period over South America, an important system is one of the main modulators of the rainfall regime of the working regions, the SACZ. This system is a nebulosity zone that extends from the Amazon region and it comprehends the midwest and southeast regions, extending it to the southwest of the South Atlantic Ocean. This system will lead to large volumes of rainfall, which can sometimes bring disorders to society, such as landslides, floods, etc. In addition, from the point of view of the predictability of this phenomenon, it has been created an interest in understanding how to adequately represent it in numerical models. One of the most important reasons for this is that in the current context, the global models still can not satisfactorily represent this zone of convergence. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyse how the regional model RegCM4 will represent the different atmospheric characteristics when SACZ occurs, due to the importance of the convergence zone thanks to its effects on the regions where the band is stationed. For this, 10 events of SACZ were selected, according to the active phases of the Madden and Jullian Oscillation, being this oscillation important for the tropical convection and in the occurrence of SACZ. After this selection, the average fields of the events of each variable were evaluated, which were: precipitation, surface wind in 850 and 250 hPa, geopotential height in 250 hPa, omega, air temperature, equivalent potential temperature, vorticity, divergence and specific humidity. Finally, the simulations of the RegCM4 model were generally satisfactory for most of the variables, with some displacements regarding the position of some systems that contribute to the formation and maintenance of the SACZ. No período do verão austral sobre a América do Sul, um importante sistema é um dos principais moduladores do regime de chuvas das regiões atuantes, a ZCAS, que é uma zona de nebulosidade que se estende desde a região amazônica, compreendendo as regiões centro oeste, as regiões sudeste, e estendendo-se até o sudoeste do Oceano Atlântico Sul. Este sistema irá acarretar grandes volumes chuvas, o que por vezes pode trazer transtornos para a sociedade, como deslizamentos, alagamentos, etc. Do ponto de vista da previsibilidade deste fenômeno, tem se criado interesse em compreender como representa-lo adequadamente em modelos numéricos; pois no contexto atual, os modelos globais ainda não conseguem representar de forma satisfatória esta zona de convergência. Logo devido a importância da zona de convergência por conta dos seus efeitos, sobre as regiões em que a banda estaciona, a proposta deste trabalho foi analisar de que forma o modelo regional RegCM4, irá representar as diferentes características atmosféricas quando há a ocorrência de ZCAS. Para isso foram selecionados 10 eventos de ZCAS, conforme as fases ativas da Oscilação de Madden e Jullian, sendo esta oscilação importante para a convecção tropical e na ocorrência de ZCAS. Após a seleção dos eventos, foram avaliados os campos médios dos eventos de cada uma das variáveis como: Precipitação, vento em superfície, 850 e 250 hPa, altura Geopotencial em 250hPa, ômega, Temperatura do ar, Temperatura Potencial Equivalente, Vorticidade, Divergência e Umidade Específica. Os eventos foram divididos em três grupos (quanto a distribuição da chuva) para as análises. As simulações do modelo RegCM4, de forma geral foram satisfatórias para a maioria das variáveis, havendo alguns deslocamentos quanto a posição de alguns sistemas que contribuem para formação e manutenção da ZCAS.

This study has objectively-assessed the performance of numerical simulations of Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCSs) in the La Plata Basin (LPB) comparing two distinct approaches: deterministic simulations in the convective-allowing scale and a multi-physics ensemble in the mesoscale (ENS). Two episodes of MCSs that occurred in the LPB under distinct synoptic forcings (strong and weak) were selected. For each episode, numerical simulations utilizing the Weather Forecast and Research model (ARW-WRF) with two nested grids with horizontal resolutions of the 12 (G12) and 4km (G04), in "one-way" mode. For each SCM episode, eighteen simulations were performed in the G12 domain with each simulation utilizing a distinct combination of physical parameterization schemes, for which were selected three different convective schemes (EPC), three schemes for cloud microphysics (EMN), and two planetary boundary layer schemes (ECL). The eighteen G12 simulations formed the members of ENS, with each member also providing a respective G04 simulation that used the same corresponding options of EMN e ECL. To assess the skill of the simulations, 3-hourly surface data in METAR format and estimated precipitation from the Merged Microwave product generated by the Climate Prediciton Center (CPC/NOAA) were used. Traditional methods were employed to verify the simulation of surface variables, which were summarized with the Taylor diagram. For precipitation, a non-traditional objectoriented technique was utilized, as well as a hierarchical cluster analysis that allowed the ranking of the simulations as a function of the similarity of the rainfall patterns produced. Among the surface variables, the best model performance was obtained for the sea-level pressure, for both the G12 ENS and G04 deterministic runs. The latter ones displayed superior performance compared to G12 ENS for surface stations that were affected by convectively-induced mesoscale circulations. Larger spread was found for the simulations of the MCS under weaker synoptic forcing, with the surface wind being the variable exhibiting the highest spread. As for precipitation, the cluster analysis showed that the cloud microphysics and convective schemes diplayed the strongest influence upon the spatial and temporal distribution of the simualted rainfall. Overall, simulations with the Thompson EMN produced rainfall patterns and evolution with closest agreement with the counterpart from the estimated rainfall. The object-oriented forecast verification highlighted a clear distinction in the model performance as a function of the synoptic forcing, with better results for the strong synoptic forcing case. Results from this study showed that an approach combining the multi-physics ensemble in the mesoscale with deterministic simulations in the convective-allowing scale can be an interesting option for numerical weather prediction. Nesta tese foi avaliada, de maneira objetiva, a destreza de simulações numéricas de Sistemas Convectivos de Mesoescala (SCMs) na Bacia do Prata (BP) comparando-se duas abordagens distintas: simulações determinísticas em escala de convecção semi-explícita e um ensemble multi-físico em escala meso (ENS). Foram escolhidos dois eventos de SCMs sob diferentes condições de forçante sinótica (fraca e intensa). Foram realizadas simulações com o modelo Weather Research and Forecast com grades aninhadas com 12 (G12) e 4km (G04) de resolução horizontal, em modo "one-way". Para cada evento de SCM foram conduzidas dezoito simulações G12 com cada simulação utilizando uma combinação de três esquemas para convecção (EPC), três para a microfísica de nuvens (EMN) e dois para a camada limite planetária (ECL). As simulações G12 compuseram os membros do ENS, com cada uma delas alimentando uma respectiva simulação G04 utilizando a correspondente EMN e ECL. Para a avaliação das simulações foram utilizados dados de superfície a cada três horas e o produto de precipitação estimada Merged Microwave do Climate Prediciton Center (CPC/NOAA) contendo a taxa de precipitação a cada três horas. Métodos tradicionais de verificação da previsão foram usados para avaliação das simulações das variáveis de superfície, com emprego do Diagrama de Taylor. Para a precipitação foi empregada a técnica de verificação (não-tradicional) orientada a objeto, além de uma análise de agrupamento hierárquico que permitiu classificar as simulações de acordo com o grau de similaridade. Entre as variáveis de superfície, a pressão ao nível do mar foi a de melhor representação numérica, tanto no ENS quanto nas simulações determinísticas G04. As simulações determinísticas G04 mostraram desempenho superior ao ENS em localidades que foram atingidas por circulações de mesoescala geradas pelos SCMs. Uma maior dispersão entre as simulações foi encontrada no evento de fraca forçante sinótica, com a variável vento apresentando a maior dispersão entre as variáveis de superfície. Para a precipitação, a análise de agrupamento mostrou que os EMN e EPC foram os que mais influenciaram a distribuição espacial e temporal das chuvas. Em termos gerais as simulações com o EMN Thompson foi o que gerou os campos de chuva mais próximos das observações. A verificação orientada a objeto apresentou uma clara distinção no desempenho das simulações em função da intensidade da forçante sinótica, com melhores resultados no caso de forçante sinótica mais intensa. Os resultados mostram que a combinação da abordagem de ensemble multi-física em mesoescala e determinística em alta resolução pode ser um caminho a ser explorado em previsão numérica do tempo.

Recently, much has been discussed in the scientific community about global warming since the 1970s and its impacts on temperature extremes. Some studies refer to a time of the 21st century. However, even if this gap is confirmed, results in the literature point to an increase in the frequency, intensity and persistence of the extremes in this same period. In addition to anthropogenic activities, climatic differences may be controlling these slower and faster periods of heating. Considering the impacts that extremes of temperature can cause, both for society and the economy, this work aims to analyze the variability of heat waves in the subtropical region of Brazil from 1980 to 2013. That is, verify how these extremes are behaving over the decades, and relate them to the South Atlantic Convergence Zone and the Antarctic Oscillation. For this, daily data of maximum temperature and geopotential height in high and low levels were used, as well as the SACZ events from 1992 to 2013. Through the applied methodology, the subtropical region was divided in two (regions 1 and 2). For both, there has been an increase in the frequency, intensity and persistence of heat waves since the 80's. In addition, the events presented a seasonal characteristic, more frequently in the winter period. Regarding the SACZ, it is clear the influence of the same on the temperature anomalies in the region more to the south of its climatological position, however there were few extremes of temperature during the period that the SACZ acts. The Antarctic Oscillation also presented an important relation with the statistical characteristics of the heat waves. The events were more frequent and persistent during AAO-, whereas in AAO + they were more intense. The behavior of the atmosphere during the heat waves in each of the phases was also analyzed. The two regions presented similar behavior, being that in the negative phase the heat waves are favored by the action of an atmospheric blockade in the Southeast Pacific together with the positive anomalies on the Atlantic, while in the positive phase the South Atlantic positive anomalies plays a dominant role in the development of heat waves. This pattern repeats at high and low levels, showing that the systems are vertically aligned. Recentemente, vem sendo muito discutido na comunidade científica acerca do aquecimento global desde a década de 70 e seus impactos sobre os extremos de temperatura. Alguns estudos afirmam que houve um hiato neste aquecimento durante a primeira década do século 21. No entanto, mesmo que este hiato se confirme, resultados apresentados na literatura apontam para um aumento na frequência, intensidade e persistência dos extremos neste mesmo período. Além das atividades antropogênicas, variabilidades naturais do clima podem estar controlando estes períodos mais lentos e acelerados de aquecimento. Tendo em vista os impactos que os extremos de temperatura podem causar, tanto para a sociedade, como para a economia, este trabalho visa analisar a variabilidade das ondas de calor na região subtropical do Brasil de 1980 a 2013. Ou seja, verificar como estes extremos estão se comportando ao longo das décadas, e relacioná-los com a Zona de Convergência do Atlântico Sul e com a Oscilação Antártica. Para isto, foram utilizados dados diários de temperatura máxima e altura geopotencial em altos e baixos níveis, bem como os eventos de ZCAS de 1992 a 2013. Através da metodologia aplicada, a região subtropical foi dividida em dois (regiões 1 e 2). Para ambas, verificou-se um aumento na frequência, intensidade e persistência das ondas de calor desde a década de 80. Além disso, os eventos apresentaram uma característica sazonal, com maior frequência no período do inverno. Com relação à ZCAS, fica clara a influência da mesma sobre as anomalias de temperatura na região mais ao sul da sua posição climatológica, no entanto houveram poucos extremos de temperatura durante o período que a ZCAS atua. A Oscilação Antártica também apresentou uma importante relação com as características estatísticas das ondas de calor. Os eventos foram mais frequentes e persistentes durante a AAO-, enquanto que na AAO+ foram mais intensos. Foi analisado também o comportamento da atmosfera durante as ondas de calor em cada uma das fases. As duas regiões apresentaram comportamentos semelhantes, sendo que na fase negativa as ondas de calor são favorecidas pela atuação de um bloqueio atmosférico no Pacífico Sudeste em conjunto com anomalias positivas sobre o Atlântico, enquanto que na fase positiva as anomalias positivas no Atlântico Sul têm um papel dominante no desenvolvimento das ondas de calor. Este padrão se repete em altos e baixos níveis, mostrando que os sistemas estão verticalmente alinhados.

During the rainy season (october-march) over the southeast of Brazil there is a band of convective nebulosity that extends generally from the south of the Amazon to the southwest Atlantic ocean, known as the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ). It is of great interest because it generates high accumulations of rain in the regions where it operates, causing serious damage to society. The SACZ is influenced by atmospheric variability at various time scales, but few studies explore the influence of extratropical circulation on its formation. Therefore, the objective of this work is to evaluate the role of the Antarctic oscillation (AAO) phases in the events of SACZ. For this, cases of SACZ events were selected from 1992 to 2015, daily precipitation data from 1980 to 2013, ERA-INTERIM daily data (air temperature, dew point temperature, geopotential height at 200 hPa and 700 hPa, sea level pressure, zonal wind at 200 hPa and 850 hPa and meridional wind at 850 hPa components) for the period 1980 to 2015 and daily outgoing long-wave radiation (OLR) data obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) between 1974-2013. The reanalysis and OLR data were filtered in the intrasazonal band (10-100 days) and after the fields of the lagged composition of each variable were created for each phase of the AAO. The initial results, using statistical analysis, showed that both the persistence and frequency of SACZ events are greater in AAO+. The sign of precipitation over the climatological region of the SACZ was evident in both phases, but especially in the AAO+, which showed the highest values accumulated per event. The lagged fields of the daily precipitation anomalies were generated and in general, in both phases of the AAO, from lag 1 there is an extensive area of positive anomalies in the SACZ region, weakening from the lag 6. It is also noticeable that from the lag 0 negative precipitation anomalies of the south of Brazil appear, which weaken from lag 7, in the two phases of AAO. The composites of the intrasonal anomalies of the variables used coherently represented the circulation patterns associated with the occurrence of the SACZ, with the strongest and most comprehensive signs from the lag 0 (day of onset of the event), in both phases of the AAO. It can be concluded, then, that the signal of the influence of the AAO phases on the SACZ events is best represented in the precipitation field, and during the AAO+ the events were more frequent and persistent, presenting the highest accumulations of rainfall. Durante o período chuvoso (outubro-março) sobre o sudeste do Brasil observa-se uma banda de nebulosidade convectiva que se estende geralmente desde o sul da Amazônia até o oceano Atlântico sudoeste, conhecida como zona de convergência do Atlântico Sul (ZCAS). Ela é de grande interesse, pois gera altos acumulados de chuva nas regiões em que atua, causando sérios danos à sociedade. A ZCAS é influenciada por variabilidades atmosféricas em várias escalas temporais, mas poucos estudos exploram a influência da circulação extratropical na sua formação. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o papel das fases da oscilação Antártica (AAO) nos eventos de ZCAS. Para isto, foram selecionados casos de eventos ZCAS encontrados nos anos de 1992 a 2015, dados diários de precipitação entre 1980-2013, dados diários de reanálise do ERA-INTERIM (temperatura do ar, temperatura do ponto de orvalho, altura geopotencial em 200 hPa e 700 hPa, pressão ao nível do mar, componentes zonal do vento em 200 hPa e 850 hPa e meridional em 850 hPa) para o período de 1980 a 2015 e dados diários de radiação de onda longa emergente (ROLE) obtidos do National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) entre 1974-2013. Os dados de reanálise e de OLR foram filtrados na banda intrasazonal (10-100 dias) e após criados os campos da composição defasada de cada variável para cada fase da AAO. Os resultados iniciais, através de análise estatística, mostraram que ambas a persistência e a frequência dos eventos de ZCAS são maiores na AAO+. O sinal da precipitação sobre a região climatológica da ZCAS ficou evidente em ambas as fases, mas com destaque na AAO+, que apresentou os maiores valores acumulados por evento. Foram gerados os campos defasados das anomalias de precipitação diária e de modo geral, em ambas as fases da AAO, a partir do lag 1 há uma extensa área de anomalias positivas na região da ZCAS, enfraquecendo a partir do lag 6. É notório também que a partir do lag 0 surgem anomalias negativas de precipitação do sul do Brasil, as quais enfraquecem a partir do lag 7, nas duas fases da AAO. Os compósitos das anomalias intrasazonais das variáveis utilizadas representaram coerentemente os padrões de circulação associados à ocorrência da ZCAS, com os sinais mais fortes e abrangentes a partir do lag 0 (dia de início do evento), em ambas as fases da AAO. Pode-se concluir então, que o sinal da influência das fases da AAO nos eventos de ZCAS é melhor representado no campo de precipitação, sendo que durante a fase positiva os eventos foram mais frequentes e persistentes, apresentando os maiores acumulados de chuva.
