Quaternary (Al x Ga 1-x ) y In 1-y P alloys grown on GaAs substrates have recently gained considerable interest in photonics for improving visible light-emitting diodes, laser diodes, and photodetectors. With two degrees of freedom (x, y) and keeping growth on a lattice-matched GaAs substrate, the (Al x Ga 1-x ) 0.5 In 0.5 P alloys are used for tuning structural, phonon, and optical characteristics in different energy regions from far-infrared (FIR) → near-infrared (NIR) → ultraviolet (UV). Despite the successful growth of (Al x Ga 1-x ) 0.5 In 0.5 P/n + -GaAs epilayers, limited optical, phonon, and structural characteristics exist. Here, we report our results of carefully examined optical and vibrational properties on highly disordered alloys using temperature-dependent photoluminescence (TD-PL), Raman scattering spectroscopy (RSS), and Fourier-transform infrared reflectivity (FTIR). Macroscopic models were meticulously employed to analyze the TD-PL, RSS, and FTIR data of the (Al 0.24 Ga 0.76 ) 0.5 In 0.5 P/n + -GaAs epilayers to comprehend the energy-dependent characteristics. The Raman scattering and FTIR results of phonons helped analyze the reflectivity spectra in the FIR region. Optical constants were carefully integrated in the transfer matrix method for evaluating the reflectivity R(E) and transmission T(E) spectra in the NIR → UV regions, validating the TD-PL measurements of bandgap energies (EgPL).

GaN on Si plays an important role in the integration and promotion of GaN-based wide-gap materials with Si-based integrated circuits (IC) technology. A series of GaN film materials were grown on Si (111) substrate using a unique plasma assistant molecular beam epitaxy (PA-MBE) technology and investigated using multiple characterization techniques of Nomarski microscopy (NM), high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HR-XRD), variable angular spectroscopic ellipsometry (VASE), Raman scattering, photoluminescence (PL), and synchrotron radiation (SR) near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. NM confirmed crack-free wurtzite (w-) GaN thin films in a large range of 180-1500 nm. XRD identified the w- single crystalline structure for these GaN films with the orientation along the c-axis in the normal growth direction. An optimized 700 °C growth temperature, plus other corresponding parameters, was obtained for the PA-MBE growth of GaN on Si, exhibiting strong PL emission, narrow/strong Raman phonon modes, XRD w-GaN peaks, and high crystalline perfection. VASE studies identified this set of MBE-grown GaN/Si as having very low Urbach energy of about 18 meV. UV (325 nm)-excited Raman spectra of GaN/Si samples exhibited the GaN E 2 (low) and E 2 (high) phonon modes clearly without Raman features from the Si substrate, overcoming the difficulties from visible (532 nm) Raman measurements with strong Si Raman features overwhelming the GaN signals. The combined UV excitation Raman-PL spectra revealed multiple LO phonons spread over the GaN fundamental band edge emission PL band due to the outgoing resonance effect. Calculation of the UV Raman spectra determined the carrier concentrations with excellent values. Angular-dependent NEXAFS on Ga K-edge revealed the significant anisotropy of the conduction band of w-GaN and identified the NEXAFS resonances corresponding to different final states in the hexagonal GaN films on Si. Comparative GaN material properties are investigated in depth.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic led to reduced services of private dental practices. The public emergency clinic of Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM) (Newark, NJ) faced changing demands during various periods of the pandemic., Methods: Records of patients visiting the emergency clinic at RSDM during 3 distinct periods (prelockdown, lockdown, teledentistry) from January 10, 2020, through June 30, 2020, were retrospectively reviewed. Qualitative and quantitative attributes pertaining to patient encounters were reviewed and analyzed., Results: A total of 1,799 records were included in this study. Patient visits increased during the early lockdown but were reduced after the implementation of teledentistry. Trends were noted in patient volume, reasons for visits, treatment needs, symptoms, diagnostic methodology, prescription use, and final disposition of patients., Conclusions: The lockdown affected emergency dental clinic services at RSDM. Teledentistry visits played a key role in screening patients and in facilitating the delivery of oral health care and timely follow-ups to patients who needed urgent in-person emergency visits., Practical Implications: Data gathered will lead to a better understanding of patients seen in the emergency clinic and can help with long-term planning for both institutional and smaller outpatient clinics during public health emergencies., Competing Interests: Disclosure None of the authors reported any disclosures., (Copyright © 2024 American Dental Association. Due to the harsh operating environment and ultralong operating hours of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), node failures are inevitable. Ensuring the reliability of the data collected by the WSN necessitates the utmost importance of diagnosing faults in nodes within the WSN. Typically, the initial step in the fault diagnosis of WSN nodes involves extracting numerical features from neighboring nodes. A solitary data feature is often assigned a high weight, resulting in the failure to effectively distinguish between all types of faults. Therefore, this study introduces an enhanced variant of the traditional belief rule base (BRB), called the belief rule base with adaptive attribute weights (BRB-AAW). First, the data features are extracted as input attributes for the model. Second, a fault diagnosis model for WSN nodes, incorporating BRB-AAW, is established by integrating parameters initialized by expert knowledge with the extracted data features. Third, to optimize the model's initial parameters, the projection covariance matrix adaptive evolution strategy (P-CMA-ES) algorithm is employed. Finally, a comprehensive case study is designed to verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed method. The results of the case study indicate that compared with the traditional BRB method, the accuracy of the proposed model in WSN node fault diagnosis is significantly improved., (© 2024. Displacement-controlled systems have high efficiency and are widely used in industry. Accurate control of the actuator motion in hydraulic systems is usually a necessity in industrial applications such as the motion of control surfaces in fixed-wing airplanes for flight control as well as the aircraft brake systems. To address this need, the current study was conducted with the goal of developing a high-fidelity model to achieve precise control. This work focused on modeling a hydrostatic transmission that is used for controlling a linear actuator velocity. The flow entering the actuator was changed using a variable displacement pump. The study included examining the stability and performance of the open-loop system. Additionally, the study involved the design of the proportional-integral-derivative PID and H ∞ controllers, followed by the analysis of the stability and performance of the closed-loop system with both controllers. Furthermore, the multiplicative uncertainty is taken into account and the robustness of the system is verified using controllers PID and H ∞. In the current study,Uncertain parameters such as actuator efficiency, pump speed, and viscous friction coefficient were considered and allowed for a ±5% deviation from their stated values. Taking uncertainty into account ensures that the system performs properly even in case where the design parameters vary within the specified range. The system response is compared for the cases of open-loop system, closed-loop system with PID controller, and closed-loop system with H ∞ controller. The results demonstrated that the open-loop system remains stable for real-world applications but shows insufficient performance in terms of input tracking and disturbance rejection. The introduction of the PID controller significantly enhanced the system's response to a reference input; however, its disturbance rejection capabilities in terms of overshoot and settling time were still unsatisfactory. The system equipped with the PID controller failed to meet the robustness requirements. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is the primary cause of respiratory failure in critically ill patients. Despite remarkable therapeutic advances in recent years, ARDS remains a life-threatening clinical complication with high morbidity and mortality, especially during the global spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Previous studies have demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based therapy is a potential alternative strategy for the treatment of refractory respiratory diseases including ARDS, while extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as the last resort treatment to sustain life can help improve the survival of ARDS patients. In recent years, several studies have explored the effects of ECMO combined with MSC-based therapies in the treatment of ARDS, and some of them have demonstrated that this combination can provide better therapeutic effects, while others have argued that some critical issues need to be solved before it can be applied to clinical practice. Background: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common severe gastrointestinal emergency in neonates. We designed this study to identify the pathogenic microorganisms of NEC in the microbiota of the small intestine of neonates., Methods: Using the 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequencing method, we compared and analyzed the structure and diversity of microbiotas in the intestinal feces of different groups of neonates: patients undergoing jejunostomy to treat NEC (NP group), neonates undergoing jejunostomy to treat other conditions (NN group), and neonates with NEC undergoing conservative treatment (NC group). We took intestinal feces and saliva samples from patients at different time points., Results: The beta diversities of the NP, NN, and NC groups were all similar. When comparing the beta diversities between different time points in the NP group, we found similar beta diversities at time points E1 to E3 but significant differences between the E2-E3 and E4 time points: the abundances of Klebsiella and Enterococcus (Proteobacteria) were higher at the E1-E3 time points; the abundance of Escherichia-Shigella (Proteobacteria) increased at the E2 time point, and the abundance of Klebsiella decreased significantly, whereas that of Streptococcus increased significantly at the E4 time point., Conclusions: Our results suggest that the pathological changes of intestinal necrosis in the small intestine of infants with NEC are not directly caused by excessive proliferation of pathogenic bacteria in the small intestine. Objective: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an eye disease with the potential to cause blindness, primarily affecting premature infants with low birth weight. This study analyzed the etiology, primary location, and research advances in ROP., Materials and Methods: We used bibliometric techniques and searched the Web of Science Core Collection for "retinopathy of prematurity." We found 4,018 original articles and reviews with 69,819 references. We analyzed the data using HistCite (12.03.17), VOSviewer (1.6.16), CiteSpace (6.1. R5), and the Bibliometrix Package (4.1.0)., Results: The amount of literature in this area has increased between 2001-2021. An analysis of references and journal co-citations highlights this field's most influential articles and related topics. Hellström, from the University of Gothenburg (Sweden), is the most prolific researcher; Harvard University is the most prolific research institution, and the USA is the most productive country. "Threshold ROP" and "cryotherapy" are the keywords with the highest burst strength. The future research hotspots are artificial intelligence, zone II, ROP development, ranibizumab, and type 1 retinopathy., Conclusions: This article offers a comprehensive review of the present status of ROP research, along with insights into emerging concepts and potential international collaborations in this field.

The high-quality aluminum nitride (AlN) epilayer is the key factor that directly affects the performance of semiconductor deep-ultraviolet (DUV) photoelectronic devices. In this work, to investigate the influence of thickness on the quality of the AlN epilayer, two AlN-thick epi-film samples were grown on c-plane sapphire substrates. The optical and structural characteristics of AlN films are meticulously examined by using high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HR-XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), a dual-beam ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer, and spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). It has been found that the quality of AlN can be controlled by adjusting the AlN film thickness. The phenomenon, in which the thicker AlNn film exhibits lower dislocations than the thinner one, demonstrates that thick AlN epitaxial samples can work as a strain relief layer and, in the meantime, help significantly bend the dislocations and decrease total dislocation density with the thicker epi-film. The Urbach's binding energy and optical bandgap ( E g ) derived by optical transmission (OT) and SE depend on crystallite size, crystalline alignment, and film thickness, which are in good agreement with XRD and SEM results. It is concluded that under the treatment of thickening film, the essence of crystal quality is improved. The bandgap energies of AlN samples obtained from SE possess larger values and higher accuracy than those extracted from OT. The Bose-Einstein relation is used to demonstrate the bandgap variation with temperature, and it is indicated that the thermal stability of bandgap energy can be improved with an increase in film thickness. It is revealed that when the thickness increases to micrometer order, the thickness has little effect on the change of E g with temperature.

Background: Heterologous booster immunisation with orally administered aerosolised Ad5-nCoV vaccine (AAd5) has been shown to be safe and highly immunogenic in adults. Here, we aimed to assess the safety and immunogenicity of heterologous booster immunisation with orally administered AAd5 in children and adolescents aged 6-17 years who had received two doses of inactivated vaccine (BBIBP-CorV or CoronaVac)., Methods: We did a randomised, open-label, parallel-controlled, non-inferiority study to assess the safety and immunogenicity of heterologous booster immunisation with AAd5 (0·1 mL) or intramuscular Ad5-nCoV vaccine (IMAd5; 0·3 mL) and homologous booster immunisation with inactivated vaccine (BBIBP-CorV or CoronaVac; 0·5 mL) in children (aged 6-12 years) and adolescents (aged 13-17 years) who had received two doses of inactivated vaccine at least 3 months earlier in Hunan, China. Children and adolescents who were previously immunised with two-dose BBIBP-CorV or CoronaVac were recruited for eligibility screening at least 3 months after the second dose. A stratified block method was used for randomisation, and participants were stratified by age and randomly assigned (3:1:1) to receive AAd5, IMAd5, or inactivated vaccine. The study staff and participants were not masked to treatment allocation. Laboratory and statistical staff were masked during the study. In this interim analysis, adverse events within 14 days and geometric mean titre (GMT) of serum neutralising antibodies on day 28 after the booster vaccination, based on the per-protocol population, were used as the primary outcomes. The analysis of non-inferiority was based on comparison using a one-sided 97·5% CI with a non-inferiority margin of 0·67. This study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT05330871, and is ongoing., Findings: Between April 17 and May 28, 2022, 436 participants were screened and 360 were enrolled: 220 received AAd5, 70 received IMAd5, and 70 received inactivated vaccine. Within 14 days after booster vaccination, vaccine-related adverse reactions were reported: 35 adverse events (in 13 [12%] of 110 children and 22 [20%] of 110 adolescents) in 220 individuals in the AAd5 group, 35 (in 18 [51%] of 35 children and 17 [49%] of 35 adolescents) in 70 individuals in the IMAd5 group, and 13 (in five [14%] of 35 children and eight [23%] of 35 adolescents) in 70 individuals in the inactivated vaccine group. Solicited adverse reactions were also reported: 34 (13 [12%] of 110 children and 21 [10%] of 110 adolescents) in 220 individuals in the AAd5 group, 34 (17 [49%] of 35 children and 17 [49%] of 35 adolescents) in 70 individuals in the IMAd5 group, and 12 (five [14%] of 35 children and seven [20%] of 35 adolescents) in 70 individuals in the inactivated vaccine group. The GMTs of neutralising antibodies against ancestral SARS-CoV-2 Wuhan-Hu-1 (Pango lineage B) in the AAd5 group were significantly higher than the GMTs in the inactivated vaccine group (adjusted GMT ratio 10·2 [95% CI 8·0-13·1]; p<0·0001)., Interpretation: Our study shows that a heterologous booster with AAd5 is safe and highly immunogenic against ancestral SARS-CoV-2 Wuhan-Hu-1 in children and adolescents., Funding: National Key R&D Program of China., Competing Interests: Declaration of interests J-BG, H-TH, XW, and HL are employees of CanSino Biologics. The long-range crystallographic order and anisotropy in β-(Al x Ga 1-x ) 2 O 3 (x = 0.0, 0.06, 0.11, 0.17, 0.26) crystals, prepared by optical floating zone method with different Al composition, is systematically studied by spatial correlation model and using an angle-resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy. Alloying with aluminum is seen as causing Raman peaks to blue shift while their full widths at half maxima broadened. As x increased, the correlation length (CL) of the Raman modes decreased. By changing x, the CL is more strongly affected for low-frequency phonons than the modes in the high-frequency region. For each Raman mode, the CL is decreased by increasing temperature. The results of angle-resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy have revealed that the intensities of β-(Al x Ga 1-x ) 2 O 3 peaks are highly polarization dependent, with significant effects on the anisotropy with alloying. As the Al composition increased, the anisotropy of Raman tensor elements was enhanced for the two strongest phonon modes in the low-frequency range, while the anisotropy of the sharpest Raman phonon modes in the high-frequency region decreased. Our comprehensive study has provided meaningful results for comprehending the long-range orderliness and anisotropy in technologically important β-(Al x Ga 1-x ) 2 O 3 crystals.

Objective: To compare post-treatment recurrence between ranibizumab injection and laser photocoagulation (LP) for type 1 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and explore the associated risk factors., Methods: The clinical data of ROP infants treated with LP or ranibizumab in a NICU of China from October 2007 to November 2021 were retrospectively analyzed and compared, such as general condition, degree of ROP, therapeutic effectiveness and post-treatment recurrence. The dependent variable was recurrence after ROP treatment. Univariate and regression analysis of risk factors was performed., Results: Of the 298 ROP infants (556 eyes), 58% of the eyes were treated with LP and the other 42% with ranibizumab. There was no significant difference in gestational age at birth, birth weight, sex, delivery mode, prenatal corticosteroids, ROP diagnosed before admission or after admission, and the duration of oxygen therapy between the two groups. However, the ratio of type 1 ROP and aggressive retinopathy of prematurity (A-ROP) in ranibizumab group was higher than that in LP group. The number of treatments, recurrence rate and recurrence interval in ranibizumab group were higher than those in LP group. However, there was no difference in the recurrence rate between the two groups after stratified analysis by the lesion area and the presence or absence of A-ROP. There was no significant difference in the final lesion regression between the two groups. Regression analysis showed that plus disease and ROP located in zone I were independent risk factors for post-treatment recurrence., Conclusion: There is no significant difference in the recurrence rate of ROP between ranibizumab injection and LP, and recurrence is mainly related to the severity of ROP. Bulk aluminum nitride (AlN) crystals with different polarities were grown by physical vapor transport (PVT). The structural, surface, and optical properties of m-plane and c-plane AlN crystals were comparatively studied by using high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HR-XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. Temperature-dependent Raman measurements showed that the Raman shift and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the E 2 (high) phonon mode of the m-plane AlN crystal were larger than those of the c-plane AlN crystal, which would be correlated with the residual stress and defects in the AlN samples, respectively. Moreover, the phonon lifetime of the Raman-active modes largely decayed and its line width gradually broadened with the increase in temperature. The phonon lifetime of the Raman TO-phonon mode was changed less than that of the LO-phonon mode with temperature in the two crystals. It should be noted that the influence of inhomogeneous impurity phonon scattering on the phonon lifetime and the contribution to the Raman shift came from thermal expansion at a higher temperature. In addition, the trend of stress with increasing 1000/temperature was similar for the two AlN samples. As the temperature increased from 80 K to ~870 K, there was a temperature at which the biaxial stress of the samples transformed from compressive to tensile stress, while their certain temperature was different.

GaN nanowires (NWs) grown on silicon via atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition were doped with Cobalt (Co) by ion implantation, with a high dose concentration of 4 × 10 16 cm -2 , corresponding to an average atomic percentage of ~3.85%, and annealed after the implantation. Co-doped GaN showed optimum structural properties when annealed at 700 °C for 6 min in NH 3 ambience. From scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscope, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy measurements and analyses, the single crystalline nature of Co-GaN NWs was identified. Slight expansion in the lattice constant of Co-GaN NWs due to the implantation-induced stress effect was observed, which was recovered by thermal annealing. Co-GaN NWs exhibited ferromagnetism as per the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurement. Hysteretic curves with Hc (coercivity) of 502.5 Oe at 5 K and 201.3 Oe at 300 K were obtained. Applied with a magnetic field of 100 Oe, the transition point between paramagnetic property and ferromagnetic property was determined at 332 K. Interesting structural and conducive magnetic properties show the potential of Co-doped GaN nanowires for the next optoelectronic, electronic, spintronic, sensing, optical, and related applications.

Background: Cystic angiomatosis is a rare benign disease manifesting as multiple lytic and sclerotic bone lesions, described as the proliferation of vascular and lymphatic channels lined by a single layer of endothelial cells. However, the potential pathogenetic mechanism of the disease still remains unknown. Here, we reported a case of cystic angiomatosis with multifocal bone lesion evaluated by whole exome sequencing., Case Description: In this presentation, we reported a case of an 11-year-old boy with pain in his chest. Computed tomography (CT) revealed the multiple lytic of the bone in the ribs, clavicle, vertebra thoracalis, skull, mandibula, shoulder blade, etc. The blood test showed ALP to be 393U/L and VEGF to be 287.26 pg/ml. The patient was performed with an open biopsy in the ribs and was diagnosed with cystic angiomatosis. Besides, the whole exome sequencing reported the single-nucleotide substitutions in the coding region of BRIP1, CHEK2, GRM4, and MUC16. Then, the upregulated genes involved CASC15, CENPF, ABCA13, ALK, BLM, and FGFR3., Conclusions: In this article, we report a rare case of cystic angiomatosis in a child with abnormal VEGF and ALP reported by peripheral blood examination. The whole exome sequencing could provide the reference for the potential molecular mechanism in the diagnosis and treatment of cystic angiomatosis., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

Raman scattering spectroscopy (RSS) has the merits of non-destructiveness, fast analysis, and identification of SiC polytype materials. By way of angle-dependent Raman scattering (ADRS), the isotropic characteristics are confirmed for c-face 4H-SiC, while the anisotropic properties of a-face 4H-SiC are revealed and studied in detail via combined experiments and theoretical calculation. The variation functional relationship of the angle between the incident laser polarization direction and the parallel (perpendicular) polarization direction was well established. The selection rules of wurtzite 4H-SiC are deduced, and the intensity variations of the A 1 , E 2, and E 1 Raman phonon modes dependent on the incident angle are calculated, and well-matched with experimental data. Raman tensor elements of various modes are determined.

Objective: To explore the association between oxidative stress (OS) and Kashin-Beck disease (KBD)., Methods: Terms associated with "KBD" and "OS" were searched in the six different databases up to October 2021. Stata 14.0 was used to pool the means and standard deviations using random-effect or fixed-effect model. The differentially expressed genes in the articular chondrocytes of KBD were identified, the OS related genes were identified by blasting with the GeneCards. The KEGG pathway and gene ontology enrichment analysis was conducted using STRING., Results: The pooled SMD and 95% CI showed hair selenium (-4.59; -6.99, -2.19), blood selenium (-1.65; -2.86, -0.44) and glutathione peroxidases (-4.15; -6.97, -1.33) levels were decreased in KBD, whereas the malondialdehyde (1.12; 0.60, 1.64), nitric oxide (2.29; 1.31, 3.27), nitric oxide synthase (1.07; 0.81, 1.33) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (1.69; 0.62, 2.77) were increased compared with external controls. Meanwhile, hair selenium (-2.71; -5.32, -0.10) and glutathione peroxidases (-1.00; -1.78, -0.22) in KBD were decreased, whereas the malondialdehyde (1.42; 1.04, 1.80), nitric oxide (3.08; 1.93, 4.22) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (0.81; 0.00, 1.61) were elevated compared with internal controls. Enrichment analysis revealed apoptosis was significantly correlated with KBD. The significant biological processes revealed OS induced the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria. The cellular component of OS located in the mitochondrial outer membrane., Conclusions: The OS levels in KBD were significantly increased because of selenium deficiency, OS mainly occurred in mitochondrial outer membrane, released of cytochrome c from mitochondria, and induced apoptotic signaling pathway., (Copyright © 2022 Osteoarthritis Research Society International. Background: The high death rate and medical costs of critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) in preterm infants has resulted in significant burdens on both countries and individuals. It is unclear how this affects the mortality of the integrated management model of prenatal diagnosis/postnatal treatment. This study explored the effects of the delivery classification scale for fetal heart and postnatal infants' CCHD on prenatal and postnatal integrated treatment strategies to improve the effectiveness of disease management in CCHD., Methods: This study was a case-control study, which retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 79 preterm infants (<37 weeks) who underwent prenatal diagnosis and postpartum treatment in Guangdong Provincial People' s Hospital (China) from June 2017 to June 2019. According to the diagnostic and exclusion criteria, the subjects were divided into prenatal and postpartum diagnostic groups. The clinical characteristics and survival outcomes of patients were collected and compared. The delivery classification scale was used for risk stratification and patient management., Results: Among the 79 patients included in this study, 48 (60.76%) were diagnosed prenatally, and 31 (39.24%) were diagnosed postpartum. The prenatal diagnosis group was born slightly earlier during the gestation period [35.00 (33.29-35.86) vs. 35.57 (34.14-36.71) weeks, P<0.05], and their mothers were older (33.23±5.22 vs. 30.43±6.37 years, P<0.05). The difference in the admission age between the groups was statistically significant [0 (0-5.5) vs. 7 (5-16) days, P<0.001]. The median survival time of the prenatal diagnosis group was higher than the postnatal diagnosis group [48 months (95% CI: 40.78-57.29) vs. 39 months (95% CI: 34.41-44.32), P<0.05]. The 3-year survival rates of the classes I, II, and III were 92.31% (12/13), 59.09% (13/22), and 38.46% (5/13), respectively. The survival of class I as denoted in the delivery classification scale was better than classes II or III (class I vs. II, P<0.05; class I vs. III, P<0.05). Unexpectedly, the hospitalisation costs were lower and total in-hospital days were shorter in the postnatal diagnosis group., Conclusions: The results indicated that the integrated management of a prenatal diagnosis/postnatal treatment approach in premature infants may be effective. Furthermore, the delivery classification scale has a particular prognostic value for CCHD. Background: PhelanrMcDermid syndrome (PMS) is an uncommon autosomal dominant inherited developmental disorder. The main characteristics are hypotonia, intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, autism-like behaviors and tiny facial deformities. Most cases are caused by the deletion of the 22q13 genomic region, including the deletion of SHANK3 ., Methods: Genetic and phenotype evaluations of ten Chinese pediatric patients were performed. The clinical phenotypes and genetic testing results were collected statistically. We analyzed the deletion of the 22q13 genomic region and small mutations in SHANK3 (GRCh37/hg19) and performed parental genotype verification to determine whether it was related to the parents or was a novel mutation., Results: The age of the patients diagnosed with PMS ranged from 0 to 12 years old. Nine of the pediatric patients experienced Intellectual Disability, language motion development delay and hypotonia as prominent clinical features. One subject had autism, two subjects had abnormal electroencephalogram discharge and one subject was aborted after fetal diagnosis. Three patients had a SHANK3 mutation or deletion. All but the aborted fetuses had intellectual disability. Among the ten patients, a deletion in the 22q13 region occurred in seven patients, with the smallest being 60.6 kb and the largest being >5.5 Mb. Three patients had heterozygous mutations in the SHANK3 gene., Conclusion: All ten patients had novel mutations, and three of these were missense or frameshift mutations. For the first time reported, it is predicted that the amino acid termination code may appear before protein synthesis. To find the risk of time thresholds of PROM for infectious diseases of term neonates. A multi-center prospective cohort study including pregnancies with PROM at term with a single fetus were conducted. Time thresholds of the duration from PROM to delivery were examined in 2-h increments to assess the rates of infectious neonatal diseases. 7019 pregnancies were included in the study. Neonatal pneumonia and sepsis were most frequent infectious diseases in neonates born from mother with PROM at term. Rates of early-onset pneumonia varied significantly when comparing length of time of PROM greater than 16 h vs. less than 16 h (for EOP in 3 days of life, adjusted OR 1.864, 95% CI 1.159 ~ 2.997, p = 0.010; for EOP in 7 days of life, adjusted OR 1.704, 95% CI 1.104 ~ 2.628, p = 0.016). Background: Perinatal complications are common burdens for neonates born from mother with pPROM. Physicians and parents sometimes need to make critical decisions about neonatal care with short- and long-term implications on infant's health and families and it is important to predict severe neonatal outcomes with high accuracy., Methods: The study was based on our prospective study on 1001 preterm infants born from mother with pPROM from August 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018 in three hospitals in China. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was applied to build a predicting model incorporating obstetric and neonatal characteristics available within the first day of NICU admission. We used enhanced bootstrap resampling for internal validation., Results: One thousand one-hundred pregnancies with PROM at preterm with a single fetus were included in our study. SNO was diagnosed in 180 (17.98%) neonates. On multivariate analysis of the primary cohort, independent factors for SNO were respiratory support on the first day,, surfactant on day 1, and birth weight, which were selected into the nomogram. The model displayed good discrimination with a C-index of 0.838 (95%CI, 0.802-0.874) and good calibration performance. High C-index value of 0.835 could still be reached in the internal validation and the calibration curve showed good agreement. Decision curve analysis showed if the threshold is > 15%, using our model would achieve higher net benefit than model with birthweight as the only one predictor., Conclusion: Variables available on the first day in NICU including respiratory support on the first day, the use of surfactant on the first day and birthweight could be used to predict the risk of SNO in infants born from mother with pPROM with good discrimination and calibration performance., (© 2022. Background: The importance of self-regulated learning (SRL) has been broadly recognised by medical education institutions and medical professionals. Self-regulated learning, which is a context-specific process, is affected by personal, contextual and social factors. Although many studies on exploring the factors that influenced SRL and the relationship of between SRL and clinical achievement levels have been carried out in western countries, little is known about the factors associated with self-regulated learning and its relationship with clinical performance among medical students in China., Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed to 3rd year clinical medicine students who were in the clinical clerkship stage in a medical college in Wuhan. We used Self-regulated Learning Scale for Undergraduates (SLSU) to measure the self-regulated learning of students and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) in the national proficiency test to assess the clinical performance of students. The participation rate was 73.95% (193 students). An independent t-test and analysis of variance were used to analyse the factors associated with self-regulated learning. The relationship between self-regulated learning and clinical performance was analysed with multilinear regression analysis., Results: Univariate analysis showed that having a clear career planning and a professional idol, providing full-time teaching clinical teachers in the clerkship department and seeking the help of the surrounding classmates and the guidance of teachers or senior students were significant predictors of self-regulated learning. Multilinear regression analysis has revealed a positive relationship among extrinsic goals (partial r = 0.171), clinical clerkship evaluation (partial r = 0.197) and clinical performance (F = 4.070, p = 0.004)., Conclusions: Motivation-related personal and social factors related to clinical context could promote the SRL level of medical students in China. Extrinsic goals and clinical clerkship evaluation could facilitate students' clinical achievements on clinical skills. Background: Cardiorespiratory instability occurs very often in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) and extremely-low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants undergoing patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) ligation during the early postoperative period. This study aimed to investigate ultrasonic cardiac output monitor (USCOM) as a bedside tool by evaluating the hemodynamic changes in preterm infants following PDA ligation and assessing factors that may influence these changes., Methods: This was a single-center prospective observational study at a third-level neonatal intensive care unit. A total of 33 infants, including 21 VLBW and 12 ELBW infants, were involved. Hemodynamic measurements were performed in these infants using a USCOM preoperatively as well as 0-1 h, 8-10 h, and 24 h postoperatively., Results: The PDA ligation was associated with reductions of the left ventricular cardiac output (LVCO) (P < 0.001), cardiac index (P < 0.001), flow time corrected (FTC) (P < 0.001), Smith-Madigan inotropy index (SMII) (P < 0.001), oxygen delivery (DO 2 ) (P < 0.001), and oxygen delivery index (DO 2 I) (P < 0.001) and an increase of the systemic vascular resistance index (SVRI) (P < 0.001) at 0-1 h, 8-10 h, and 24 h post-ligation compared with the respective preoperative values. Compared with the respective values at 0-1 h post-ligation, there was no significant difference in the CI, SMII, or FTC at 8-10 h and 24 h post-ligation. However, the SVRI decreased at 8-10 h and 24 h post-ligation. Moreover, the DO 2 I increased at 8-10 h and 24 h post-ligation, and the LVCO and DO 2 increased at 24 h post-ligation., Conclusion: Our study confirmed that the hemodynamic changes measured by the USCOM were similar to those measured by echocardiography in previous reports. Thus, USCOM is a useful and convenient bedside tool for assessing hemodynamic changes to guide the use of fluids, inotropic agents, and vasopressors and help modify the post-ligation course, and they may be a surrogate for repeated echocardiography during the early post-ligation period in preterm infants or a preliminary screening method., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. Objective: This study aimed to identify the predictors and threshold of failure in neonatal acute respiratory distress syndrome., Methods: Newborns with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome aged 0-28 days and gestational age ≥36 weeks were included in the study if their cases were managed with non-extra corporal membrane oxygenation treatments. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether they died before discharge. Predictors of non-extra corporal membrane oxygenation treatment failure were sought, and the threshold of predictors was calculated., Results: A total of 103 patients were included in the study. A total of 77 (74.8%) survived hospitalization and were discharged, whereas 26 (25.2%) died. Receiver operating characteristic analysis of oxygen index, pH, base excess, and combinations of these indicators demonstrated the advantage of the combination of oxygen index and base excess over the others variables regarding their predictive ability. The area under the curve for the combination of oxygen index and base excess was 0.865. When the cut-off values of oxygen index and base excess were 30.0 and -7.4, respectively, the sensitivity and specificity for predicting death were 77.0% and 84.0%, respectively. The model with base excess added a net reclassification improvement of 0.090 to the model without base excess., Conclusion: The combination of oxygen index and base excess can be used as a predictor of outcomes in neonates receiving non-extra corporal membrane oxygenation treatment for acute respiratory distress syndrome. Objective: To explore the risk factors for mortality in pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS) requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. Methods: Clinical data of 109 patients with severe PARDS supported by ECMO, who were hospitalized in 6 ECMO centers in China from September 2012 to February 2020, were retrospectively analyzed. They were divided into survival group and death group according to the prognosis. Chi-square test and rank sum test were used to compare the variables between the two groups, including the demographic data, laboratory examination results, clinical data before and after ECMO, and other supportive treatment. Univariate and multivariate Logistic regression models were used to analyze the prognostic risk factors. Results: In these 109 cases, 54 died and 55 survived. Compared with the survival group, the death group had higher incidences of acute kidney injury (AKI) (48.1% (26/54) vs . 21.8% (12/55) , χ²=8.318, P =0.004) and coagulation dysfunction (22.2% (12/54) vs. 7.3% (4/55) , χ²=4.862, P =0.027), and higher rate of renal replacement therapy (48.1% (26/54) vs. 21.8% (12/55) , χ²=9.694, P =0.008) during ECMO support. Logistic regression analysis showed that continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and AKI were independent risk factors for death in patients with severe PARDS requiring ECMO support ( HR =3.88,95% CI 1.04-14.52, HR =4.84,95% CI 1.21-19.46, both P< 0.05). Conclusion: AKI and CRRT are independent risk factors for predicting mortality in patients with severe PARDS requiring ECMO support.

Background: Burnout is a stress-induced syndrome considered to be closely related to work. Although social support could relief burnout syndrome, its effect on learning burnout in medical students remains unclear. The objectives of the study are to evaluate the association between learning burnout and social support in Chinese medical students. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed to students who participated in online learning in a medical college in Wuhan during the COVID-19 epidemic. We used the Lian version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) to assess learning burnout and the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) to assess social support. Chi-square tests were used to analyze factors associated with burnout. Independent t -test and multiple logistic regression were explored to analyze the relationship between social support and burnout. Results: A total of 684 students have completed the survey (response rate: 30.9%), of which 315 (46.12%) met standard criteria for learning burnout. Multiple logistic regression analysis has revealed that seniors, low family income and low social support were significant predictors of learning burnout (χ 2 = 41.983, p < 0.001). After adjusting for the grade and family income, there was a significant and relevant association between social support and learning burnout (OR = 0.937; 95% CI: 0.905-0.970; p < 0.001). Conclusions: Learning burnout was highly prevalent in medical students at our college. Senior students and low family income might be risk factors for learning burnout. The application of additive manufacturing (AM) technology has been widely used in various medical fields, including craniomaxillofacial surgery. The aim of the present study was to examine the surgical efficiency and post-operative outcomes of patient-specific titanium mandibular reconstruction using AM. Major steps in directly designing and manufacturing 3D customized titanium implants are discussed. Furthermore, pre-operative preparations, surgical procedures and post-operative treatment outcomes were compared among patients who received mandibular reconstruction using a customized 3D titanium implant, titanium reconstruction plates or vascularized autologous fibular grafting. Use of a customized titanium implant significantly improved surgical efficiency and precision. When compared with mandibular reconstruction using the two conventional approaches, patients who received the customized implant were significantly more satisfied with their facial appearance, and exhibited minimal post-operative complications in the 12-month follow-up period. Patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction using a customized titanium implant displayed improved mandibular contour symmetry, restored occlusal function, normal range of mouth opening and no temporomandibular joint related pain; all complications frequently experienced by patients who undergo conventional approaches of mandibular reconstruction., (Copyright: © Xia et al.)

Background: The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiology of prelabour rupture of membranes (PROM) in China and to assess the association between clinical practice following the guidelines and early neonatal infections., Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 15926 deliveries in ShenZhen Baoan Women's and Children's Hospital, Xibei Women's and Children's Hospital and Chengdu Women's and Children's Hospital between August 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018. Clinical data were collected for each participant. The epidemiology of PROM was described. The association between PROM with early neonatal infectious outcomes and the influence of the implementation of the guideline on early neonatal infectious outcomes were assessed., Findings: The incidence of PROM was 18•7%. PROM was showed to be a risk factor for neonatal infectious diseases (adjusted OR 1•92, 95%CI 1•49~2•49, p <0•0001), early-onset pneumonia (EOP) (adjusted OR 1•81, 95%CI 1•29~2•53, p =0•0006) and early-onset sepsis(EOS) (adjusted OR 14•56, 95%CI 1•90~111•67, p =0•01) for term neonates. For term neonates born from mother with PROM, induction of labor according to the guideline was a protective factor for neonatal diseases(adjusted OR 0•50, 95%CI 0•25~1•00, p =0•00498) and EOP(adjusted OR 0•32, 95%CI 0•11~0•91, p =0•03). A sol-gel method is employed for preparing high quality lead-free glass-ceramic samples (1 - x )BCZT- x BBS-incorporating Ba 0.85 Ca 0.15 Zr 0.1 Ti 0.9 O 3 (BCZT) powder and Bi 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (BBS) glass-doped additives with different values of x ( x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15). Systematic investigations are performed to comprehend the structural, dielectric and energy storage characteristics using X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, impedance and ferroelectric analyser methods. With appropriate BBS doping ( x ), many fundamental traits including breakdown strength, dielectric loss and energy storage density have shown significant improvements. Low doping-level samples x < 0.1 have retained the pure perovskite phase while a second glass phase appeared in samples with x ≥ 0.1. As the doping level (0.1 ≥ x > 0) is increased, the average grain size decreased to become better homogeneous materials with improved breakdown energy strengths. Excessive addition of BBS ( x = 0.15) causes negative effects on microstructures and other traits. The glass-ceramic sample 0.95BCZT-0.05BBS exhibits excellent dielectric permittivity and temperature stability, with the highest energy storage density of 0.3907 J cm -3 at 130 kV cm -1 . Background: The tumor microenvironment (TME) of human glioblastoma (GBM) exhibits considerable immune cell infiltration, and such cell types have been shown to be widely involved in the development of GBM. Here, weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA) was performed on publicly available datasets to identify immune-related molecules that may contribute to the progression of GBM and thus be exploited as potential therapeutic targets. Methods: WGCNA was used to identify highly correlated gene clusters in Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas glioma dataset. Immune-related genes in significant modules were subsequently validated in the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Rembrandt databases, and impact on GBM development was examined in migration and vascular mimicry assays in vitro and in an orthotopic xenograft model (GL261 luciferase-GFP cells) in mice. Results: WGCNA yielded 14 significant modules, one of which (black) contained genes involved in immune response and extracellular matrix formation. The intersection of these genes with a GO immune-related gene set yielded 47 immune-related genes, five of which exhibited increased expression and association with worse prognosis in GBM. One of these genes, TREM1 , was highly expressed in areas of pseudopalisading cells around necrosis and associated with other proteins induced in angiogenesis/hypoxia. In macrophages induced from THP1 cells, TREM1 expression levels were increased under hypoxic conditions and associated with markers of macrophage M2 polarization. TREM1 siRNA knockdown in induced macrophages reduced their ability to promote migration and vascular mimicry in GBM cells in vitro , and treatment of mice with LP-17 peptide, which blocks TREM1, inhibited growth of GL261 orthotopic xenografts. Finally, blocking the cytokine receptor for CSF1 in induced macrophages also impeded their potential to promote tumor migration and vascular mimicry in GBM cells. Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is a novel phlebovirus in the Bunyaviridae family, causing SFTS with high mortality rate. Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks has been demonstrated as a competent vector of SFTSV by experimental transmission study and field study. However, there has been query whether other tick species that infest human beings in the SFTS endemic regions are capable of transmitting the pathogen. Here by performing experimental transmission study, we compared the capable of transmitting SFTSV among Ixodes sinensis, Ixodes persulcatus and Dermacentor silvarum ticks. The transovarial transmission was seen in the I. sinensis ticks with a rate of 40%, but neither in I. persulcatus nor in D. silvarum ticks. I. sinensis ticks also have the ability to transmit SFTSV horizontally to uninfected mice at 7 days after feeding, but not for I. persalcatus or D. silvarum ticks. In the transstadial transmission of I. persulcatus and D. silvarum ticks, I. persulcatus ticks were tested negative from larvae to adults. But the D. silvarum ticks were tested positive from larvae to nymphs, with the positive rate of 100% (10/10) for engorged larval ticks and 81.25% (13/16) for molted nymphs. However, the mice bitten by SFTSV-infected D. silvarum nymphs were negative for SFTSV detection. The broad spectrum of intellectual disability (ID) patients' clinical manifestations, the heterogeneity of ID genetic variation, and the diversity of the phenotypic variation represent major challenges for ID diagnosis. By exploiting a manually curated systematic phenotyping cohort of 3803 patients harboring ID, we identified 704 pathogenic genes, 3848 pathogenic sites, and 2075 standard phenotypes for underlying molecular perturbations and their phenotypic impact. We found the positive correlation between the number of phenotypes and that of patients that revealed their extreme heterogeneities, and the relative contribution of multiple determinants to the heterogeneity of ID phenotypes. Nevertheless, despite the extreme heterogeneity in phenotypes, the ID genes had a specific bias of mutation types, and the top 44 genes that ranked by the number of patients accounted for 39.9% of total patients. More interesting, enriched co-occurrent phenotypes and co-occurrent phenotype networks for each gene had the potential for prioritizing ID genes, further exhibited the convergences of ID phenotypes. Then we established a predictor called IDpred using machine learning methods for ID pathogenic genes prediction. Using10-fold cross-validation, our evaluation shows remarkable AUC values for IDpred (auc = 0.978), demonstrating the robustness and reliability of our tool. Besides, we built the most comprehensive database of ID phenotyped cohort to date: IDminer http://218.4.234.74:3100/IDminer/, which included the curated ID data and integrated IDpred tool for both clinical and experimental researchers. Ideally, orthognathic surgery is indicated to treat skeletal Class III malocclusion with severe open bite in adults. In this borderline case, however, camouflage treatment without any skeletal anchorage was chosen. This report describes the orthodontic treatment of a 23-year-old man who presented with multiple orthodontic problems including severe open bite of the anterior and posterior teeth up to the first molars, bilateral posterior crossbite, bilateral Class III molar relationship, severe crowding, increased vertical dimension, and dental and facial midline deviation. The treatment included the extraction of four wisdom teeth, uprighting and distalisation of the mandibular arch with molar intrusion using curved NiTi wires with intermaxillary elastics. After 36 months of treatment, satisfactory improvements in the vertical overlap, horizontal overlap and sagittal malocclusion were achieved. The design of the mechanical system used in this case confirmed stable results at the 4-year follow-up.

Objective: To study the clinical effect of white noise combined with glucose in reducing the procedural pain of retinopathy screening in preterm infants., Methods: A total of 396 preterm infants with a gestational age of 28-34 weeks and a birth weight of ≤2 000 g were randomly divided into 4 groups according to the intervention method for reducing pain in retinopathy screening: control group with 100 infants (no white noise or glucose intervention), white noise group with 96 infants, glucose group with 98 infants and white noise + glucose group with 102 infants. The Premature Infant Pain Profile (PIPP) was used to determine pain score during retinopathy screening, and the four groups were compared in terms of PIPP score before and after retinopathy screening., Results: There were no significant differences in PIPP score, heart rate and blood oxygen saturation between the four groups at 3 minutes before screening (P>0.05). At 1 and 5 minutes after screening, the white noise, glucose and white noise + glucose groups had significantly lower heart rate and PIPP score but significantly higher blood oxygen saturation than the control group (P<0.05).The white noise + glucose group had significantly lower heart rate and PIPP score but significantly higher blood oxygen saturation than the white noise and glucose groups (P<0.05)., Conclusions: White noise combined with glucose can reduce the procedural pain of retionopathy screening and keep vital signs stable in preterm infants.

Retinopathy has become one of the major factors that lead to blindness worldwide. Although many clinical therapies are concerned about such disease, most of them focus on symptoms alleviation. In this study, we aim to investigate whether coculture retinal stem cells (RSCs) with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells transfected with angiogenin-1 (Ang-1-BMSCs) affects the damaged retinal tissue of oxygen-induced retinopathy of prematurity (OIR-ROP) mice. After OIR-ROP mouse model establishment, Ang-1-BMSCs, RSCs, and OIR-ROP retinal tissues were cocultured in a a transwell chamber. RSCs proliferation and the expression of Ang-1, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in the supernatant of RSCs, as well as β-tubulin and protein kinase C (PKC) expression were evaluated. Finally, the repair of OIR-ROP mice retinal tissues was observed by injecting Ang-1-BMSCs + RSCs. In the OIR-ROP mouse model, RSCs cocultured with OIR-ROP retinal tissues could be induced to differentiate into cells expressing β-tubulin and PKC and promote the expression of Ang-1 and IGF-1. coculture of Ang-1-BMSCs further enhanced the proliferation and differentiation of RSCs by promoting the expression of Ang-1 and IGF-1. Coculture of RSCs + Ang-1-BMSCs induced differentiation of Ang-1-BMSCs through interaction among intercellular factors and restored the damaged retinal tissue of OIR-ROP mice. Collectively, our study provided evidence that coculture of Ang-1-BMSCs and RSCs could promote the proliferation and differentiation of RSCs and improve the treatment for the damaged retina tissue of OIR-ROP mice., (© 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Introduction: The present study aims to clarify the advantages and disadvantages of elite biopsy, to provide a reference for selecting the puncture method., Material and Methods: A total of 802 patients with a BI-RADS grade ≥ 4, as evaluated by the molybdenum target, and measurable lesions revealed by colour Doppler ultrasound, who were admitted at our department from January 2017 to January 2018, were enrolled in the present study. These patients were randomly divided into three groups: elite, Mammotome and core needle biopsy groups. The pathological underestimation rate, diagnostic accordance rate, haematoma incidence rate, and costs of these three biopsy methods were compared., Results: The difference in diagnostic accordance rates between the elite biopsy group and core needle biopsy group was statistically significant (98.9% vs. 94.7%, p = 0.003), as well as between the Mammotome biopsy group and core needle biopsy group (99.6% vs. 94.7%, p < 0.001). The difference in pathological underestimation rates between the elite biopsy group and core needle biopsy group was statistically significant (7.2% vs. 37.3%, p < 0.001), as well as between the Mammotome biopsy group and core needle biopsy group (1.6% vs. 7.2%, p < 0.001). The difference between the Mammotome biopsy group and elite biopsy group was not statistically significant. The incidence of haematoma in the Mommotome, elite, and core needle groups was 15.9%, 13%, and 21.7%, respectively (13% vs. 21.7%, p = 0.021)., Conclusions: Elite biopsy has a low rate of pathological underestimation and low incidence of haematoma, can improve the breast conserving rate, and has an affordable cost. Bacterial-mediated cancer therapy (BMCT) has become a hot topic in the area of antitumor treatment. Salmonella has been recommended to specifically colonize and proliferate inside tumors and even inhibit tumor growth. Salmonella typhimurium ( S. typhimurium ) is one of the most promising mediators, which can be easily manipulated. S. typhimurium has been engineered and designed as cancer-targeting therapeutics, and can be improved by combining with other therapeutic methods, e.g. chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which regulate the tumor microenvironment synergistically. In view of all these strengths, the engineered attenuated strains have significant advantages for tumor diagnosis and treatment. This treatment has also been approved by the FDA for clinical trial. Aims/hypothesis: c-Kit signalling regulates intracellular pathways that enhance beta cell proliferation, insulin secretion and islet vascularisation in mice up to 28 weeks of age and on short-term high-fat diet. However, long-term c-Kit activation in ageing mouse islets has yet to be examined. This study utilises beta cell-specific c-Kit-overexpressing transgenic (c-KitβTg) ageing mice (~60 weeks) to determine the effect of its activation on beta cell dysfunction and insulin secretion., Methods: Wild-type and c-KitβTg mice, aged 60 weeks, were examined using metabolic tests to determine glucose tolerance and insulin secretion. Pancreas histology and proteins in isolated islets were examined to determine the expression of beta cell transcription factors, proliferation and intracellular signalling. To determine the role of insulin receptor signalling in ageing c-KitβTg mice, we generated beta cell-specific inducible insulin receptor knockout in ageing c-KitβTg mice (c-KitβTg;βIRKO mice) and examined the ageing mice for glucose tolerance and islet histology., Results: Ageing c-KitβTg mice progressively developed glucose intolerance, compared with age-matched wild-type littermates, due to impaired insulin secretion. Increased beta cell mass, proliferation and nuclear forkhead box transcription factor O1 (FOXO1) expression and reduced exocytotic protein levels were detected in ageing c-KitβTg mouse islets. Protein analyses of isolated islets showed increased insulin receptor, phosphorylated IRS-1 Ser612 and cleaved poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase levels in ageing c-KitβTg mice. Ageing c-KitβTg mouse islets treated ex vivo with insulin demonstrated reduced Akt phosphorylation, indicating that prolonged c-Kit induced beta cell insulin insensitivity. Ageing c-KitβTg;βIRKO mice displayed improved glucose tolerance and beta cell function compared with ageing c-KitβTg mice., Conclusions/interpretation: These findings indicate that long-term c-Kit overexpression in beta cells has a negative impact on insulin exocytosis and that temporally dependent regulation of c-Kit-insulin receptor signalling is important for optimal beta cell function.

The refractive index of AlN has a direct influence on AlGaN-based deep ultraviolet optoelectronic devices, such as the external quantum efficiency of light-emitting devices. Revealing the dependence of the refractive index of AlN on the threading dislocations is meaningful since high-density threading dislocations usually exist in AlN. In this paper, the effect of different dislocation densities on the refractive index of AlN is investigated. With the increase of dislocation densities from 4.24 × 10 8 to 3.48 × 10 9  cm - 2 , the refractive index of AlN decreases from 2.2508 to 2.2102 at 280 nm. Further study demonstrates that the nanoscale strain field around dislocations changes the propagation of light and thus decreases the refractive index of AlN. This study will be beneficial to the design of optoelectronic devices and thus realizing high-performance deep ultraviolet optoelectronic devices.
