It remains unclear whether exercises leading to different outcomes of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) may also elicit different skin temperature responses. The aim of this study was to determine whether different intensities and volumes of a single-joint exercise influence the DOMS and skin temperature measurements differently in healthy adults. Thirty-nine men and women were randomly assigned to three groups performing different exercise of different intensities and volumes (Exhaustion, Fatigue, Submaximal) to induce DOMS in the biceps brachii. DOMS (numeric pain rate scale, NPRS), pressure pain threshold (PPT) and skin temperature (infrared thermography, IRT) were measured on exercise day and 48 h later. The different exercises resulted in lower PPT responses 48 h after exercise and different DOMS reported across the different groups. Skin temperature outcomes did not differ following the different protocols. We found an increased minimum skin temperature 48 h after exercise in groups performing more intense exercises, but such differences were found in both exercised and non-exercised arms. Differently of PPT outcomes, pain reported depended on exercise intensity, and skin temperature 48 h after exercise could not show acute exercise adaptations. It is unclear whether physiological responses, such as muscle oxygen saturation (SmO 2 ), can be considered symmetrical during cycling. This knowledge has important practical implications for both training and performance assessment. The aim of this study was to determine whether oxygenation profiles in the three active muscles of both legs were symmetrical during cycling at different intensities. Twenty-six trained cyclists and triathletes completed a graded exercise test (GXT) and an 8-min functional threshold power estimation test (8MTT) on a cycle ergometer over two nonconsecutive days. SmO 2 was bilaterally assessed using NIRS technology in the vastus lateralis, gastrocnemius medialis, and tibialis anterior. Symmetry was compared between legs in both tests, and reliability and agreement between the measurements were quantified. The main results were that SmO 2 in the three muscles assessed did not differ between legs during the GXT and 8MTT (p > 0.05). Reliability of the measures was poor to good in the vastus lateralis (ICC = 0.83-0.37), moderate to excellent in the tibialis anterior (ICC = 0.92-0.73), and poor to good for the gastrocnemius medialis (ICC = 0.80-0.24). Overall, the group variability in SmO 2 showed a narrower distribution at lower intensities, with data dispersion increasing at higher intensities. In conclusion, the SmO 2 was similar and showed symmetrical responses in both the preferred and nonpreferred limb in different muscles assessed during cycling at different intensities within a range of 10%-20%. Although individual physiological differences that might be relevant in some clinical/performance settings should not be disregarded, these findings indicate that measuring a single lower limb provides an accurate approximation of the responses in both lower limbs., (© 2024 The Author(s). Palm oil is the world's second most consumed vegetable oil, sourced from the tropical palm tree Elaeis guineensis. Its consumption has been associated with a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease, largely due to its elevated palmitic acid content, however those studies are contradictory and inconclusive. Wishing to contribute to this issue, the present study aims to investigate the molecular and toxicological effects of this oil and the involvement of oxidative stress, given its role in metabolic dysfunctions using Drosophila melanogaster. This study examines survival rates, and locomotor performance, oxidative status by analysis of lipid peroxidation, ROS formation, thiol levels and antioxidant enzyme activity, and metabolic parameters such as cholesterol and triglycerides, glucose, trehalose and glycogen levels. Exposure to palm oil concentrations of 10% and 30% resulted in a shortened lifespan, reduced locomotor performance, and increased lipid peroxidation, with lower thiol levels and antioxidant enzyme modulation. Cholesterol levels was increased whereas energetic fuels as glucose and glycogen and trehalose were decreased mainly after 10 days of exposure. These findings underscore the detrimental effects of high-fat diets containing palm oil on lifespan, antioxidant defenses, and metabolism in Drosophila melanogaster. Objective: Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) can reduce joint range of motion and strength, cause edema, and increase joint stiffness. Here we set out to determine whether quadriceps DOMS followed by an active recovery low-intensity exercise alters jump landing biomechanics., Methods: 3D landing kinematics, kinetics, and DOMS were evaluated in 26 healthy adults (15 women) performing drop and vertical jump landings before and after a squat protocol to induce quadriceps DOMS. In the presence of DOMS, half of the participants (n = 13) performed a low-intensity exercise for active recovery (10-minute treadmill walking), while the other half (n = 13) did not. Descriptive statistics and generalized estimative equations were applied to determine the effects of DOMS and active recovery on landing kinematics and kinetics., Results: DOMS decreased knee and ankle flexion angles and increased knee and ankle frontal plane angles during vertical jumps. DOMS elicited a longer time to reach peak ground reaction force during drop jumps. Low-intensity exercise for active recovery reduced DOMS perception but did not alter the biomechanics of landing., Conclusion: DOMS changes landing strategy. Memory persistence is a crucial aspect of long-term memory (LTM) and involves late consolidation processes that modulate memory stability over time. Acute physical exercise (PE) has emerged as a potential strategy to modulate memory consolidation and enhance memory persistence. While its effects have been extensively explored in the early consolidation phase, its impact on the late phase remains unexplored. In this study, we investigated the effects and mechanisms of an acute PE on the late consolidation window of novel object recognition (NOR) memory in rats. A 30-minute running session applied 11 h after NOR memory acquisition significantly increased memory persistence for at least 7 days. The inhibition of hippocampal protein synthesis immediately after acute PE using anisomycin (a ribosomal inhibitor) or rapamycin (an mTOR pathway inhibitor) impaired the effect of PE on memory persistence. Animals only presented memory 1 day after acquisition. The same effect was observed with the inhibition of beta-adrenergic receptors by timolol. Although there were no differences between the groups' comparison, blocking D1/D5 receptors after acute PE resulted in a lack of memory persistence in the dichotomous testing (remember/non-remember). Therefore, our exploration of the mechanisms underlying this enhancement revealed the involvement of protein synthesis and the requirement of beta-adrenergic and dopaminergic D1/D5 receptors in the dorsal hippocampus. The widely used insecticide chlorpyrifos (CP) is known to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity attributed to result in various neurological disorders and acetylcholine-dependent organ functions including heart, skeletal muscle, lung, gastrointestinal tract, and central nervous systems. Enzyme reactivators, such as oximes, are known to restore AChE activity and mitigate adverse effects. The identification of compounds that reactivate AChE constitute agents with important therapeutic beneficial effects in cases of pesticide poisoning. However, the screening of novel drugs using traditional models may raise ethical concerns. This study aimed to investigate the potential of Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism for screening AChE reactivators, with a focus on organophosphate poisoning. The efficacy of several oximes, including pralidoxime, trimedoxime, obidoxime, methoxime, HI-6, K027, and K048, against CP-induced AChE activity inhibition in D. melanogaster was determined in silico , in vitro , and in vivo experiments. Molecular docking studies indicated a strong interaction between studied oximes and the active-site gorge of AChE. Data showed that selected oximes (100 μM) are effective in the reactivation of AChE inhibited by CP (10 μM) in vitro . Finally, in vivo investigations demonstrated that selected oximes, pralidoxime and K048 (1.5 ppm), reversed the locomotor deficits, inhibition of AChE activity as well as lowered the mortality rates induced by CP (0.75 ppm). Our findings contribute to utilization of D. melanogaster as a robust model for determination of actions of identified new AChE inhibitory agents with more effective therapeutic properties that those currently in use in the clinical practice in treatment of AChE associated disorders.

The objective of this work was to prepare and characterize liposomes containing co-encapsulated ascorbic acid (AA) and ascorbyl palmitate (AP), as well as to evaluate their stability, cytotoxicity, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity. Through the pre-formulation studies, it was possible to improve the formulation, as leaving it more stable and with a greater antioxidant activity, resulting in a formulation designated LIP-AAP, with 161 nm vesicle size, 0.215 polydispersity index, -31.7 mV zeta potential, and pH of 3.34. Encapsulation efficiencies were 37% for AA and 79% for AP, and the content was 1 mg/mL for each compound. The optimized liposomes demonstrated stability under refrigeration for 60 days, significant antioxidant activity (31.4 μMol of TE/mL), and non-toxicity, but no antimicrobial effects against bacteria and fungi were observed. This study aimed to evaluate different methods of recovery of carotenoid-rich microbial oil (CRMO) produced by Rhodotorula mucilaginosa in renewable agro-industrial by-products to achieve oleogels based on CRMO and carnauba wax (CW). Among the oil extraction methods, Bligh and Dyer was selected since this system kept color stability. Extracted CRMO showed 41.1 µg g -1 of total carotenoid and lipid content of 23.8%. Oleogels based on CRMO or olive oil (control system) and CW at concentrations of 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10% were characterized and their potential application to food systems was highlighted. This study is one of the first to describe production of oleogel based on CRMO. Its results contribute to its potential as a fat replacer. Here, we report a successful initiative between Brazil and Germany to stimulate neuroscience outreach: the POPNeuro Program. The POPNeuro Program is a neuroscience outreach project created in Brazil that has been active for over ten years. It was initiated in Uruguaiana/RS/Brazil and linked to the Physiology Research Group from the Federal University of Pampa. The neuroscience dissemination was developed mainly in school environments by a team that includes neuroscientists and university undergraduate and graduate students. One of the key focuses of POPNeuro is to identify and avoid the dissemination of neuromyths (misconceptions generated by a misunderstanding, a misreading, or a misquoting of scientific facts). Following an initial research cooperation, the Brazilian and German teams decided to replicate some of the POPNeuro activities in Germany. The POPNeuro spin-off developed the first activities in Germany included neuroscience disclosure activities during the TUC Open Campus Day and a Neuroscience of Learning course for sports and physical education teachers. During the activities, participants took a quiz to identify the prevalence of neuromyths and knowledge of neuroscience facts. The results demonstrate a high prevalence of neurotmyths between the different participants. Despite the socio-cultural differences, these results are in line with previous results from POPNeuro in Brazil. Considering our experience and the participants' evaluations, we are confident that promoting the internationalization of this successful neurophysiology outreach program, expanding the Brazilian POPNeuro program in Germany will have a positive impact. This initiative represents a model of international cooperation that should be stimulated.

Maternal deprivation (MD) is a potent stressor during early life and can lead to behavioral changes during adulthood. Several neurochemical mechanisms underlying MD-induced stress have been proposed; among them is the damage caused to dopaminergic neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). We hypothesized that pharmacological stimulation of dopaminergic neurons in VTA by the infusion of an N-Methyl-D-Aspartate (NMDA) receptors agonist (used considering the wide distribution of these glutamatergic receptors in the VTA neurons) can reverse MD-induced memory deficits. Here, we demonstrated that MD affects male and female rats distinctly, with females being more resilient to early-life stress. Furthermore, NMDA pharmacological stimulation of the VTA promotes object recognition (OR) memory persistence in male and female non-MD rats. In males, infusion of NMDA into the VTA immediately after the learning session reverses recognition memory deficits related to MD. Although MD female rats have not shown deficits in OR memory consolidation, the NMDA infusion immediately after the learning session promotes memory persistence. We verified that MD leads to memory deficits in adult male rats, while the females are resilient to early life stress. Inorganic nanoparticles are nanomaterials with a central core composed of inorganic specimens, especially metals, which give them interesting applications but can impact the environment and human health. Their short- and long-term effects are not completely known and to investigate that, alternative models have been successfully used. Among these, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has been increasingly applied in nanotoxicology in recent years because of its many features and advantages for toxicological screening. This non-parasitic nematode may inhabit any environment where organic matter is available; therefore, it is interesting for ecotoxicological assessments. Moreover, this worm has a high genetic homology to humans, making the findings translatable. A notable number of published studies unraveled the level of toxicity of different nanoparticles, including the mechanisms by which their toxicity occurs. Background: Wearable technology is widely applied in performance monitoring, an integral part of sports and exercise sciences. The kick movement in soccer exemplifies a sports technique that could benefit from appropriate biomechanics assessment methodologies. However, the accuracy of wearables in quantifying soccer kick mechanics, particularly under field conditions, remains unclear., Objective: This study aims to present a protocol for a systematic review to discuss the measurement properties (validity, reliability, and/or accuracy aspects) of wearable technology systems explicitly used to measure ball-kicking features in soccer., Methods: This review protocol was preregistered in the Open Science Framework. A total of 2 authors will perform searches in major electronic databases using specific keyword combinations in PubMed, Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine, Web of Science, ProQuest, IEEE Xplore, EBSCOHost, and Scopus. Following a specific population, intervention, comparison, outcome framework (population: soccer players and/or collected human data in a football-related environment; intervention: at least 1 wearable used; comparator: criterion measures, repeated testing sessions and/or actual values; outcome: ball kicking data), studies will be screened based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The methodological quality of the included studies will be assessed using the "consensus-based standards for the selection of health measurement instruments" checklist (in studies concerning validity or reliability) or the "quality assessment of diagnostic accuracy studies" tool (in studies concerning accuracy). Data extraction will be conducted to determine the level of evidence according to the "best evidence synthesis method," and an evidence gap map will be constructed. The Cohen κ coefficient will be used to estimate the interevaluator agreement., Results: This ongoing systematic review has completed database searches and is currently in the screening phase. Depending on the number and consistency of studies, results may be presented by meta-analysis or qualitative synthesis, with subgroup analyses considering factors such as gender, age, and playing level. p-Coumaric acid is a significant phenolic compound known for its potent antioxidant activity. Thus, this study investigated the effects of p-coumaric acid on the behavioral and neurochemical changes induced in Drosophila melanogaster by exposure to rotenone in a Parkinson disease (PD)-like model. The flies were divided into four groups and maintained for seven days on different diets: a standard diet (control), a diet containing rotenone (500 μM), a control diet to which p-coumaric acid was added on the fourth day (0.3 μM), and a diet initially containing rotenone (500 μM) with p-coumaric acid added on the fourth day (0.3 μM). Exposure to p-coumaric acid ameliorated locomotor impairment and reduced mortality induced by rotenone. Moreover, p-coumaric acid normalized oxidative stress markers (ROS, TBARS, SOD, CAT, GST, and NPSH), mitigated oxidative damage, and reflected in the recovery of dopamine levels, AChE activity, and cellular viability post-rotenone exposure. Additionally, p-coumaric acid restored the immunoreactivity of Parkin and Nrf2. Neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are characterized by persistent changes in communication and social interaction, as well as restricted and stereotyped patterns of behavior. The complex etiology of these disorders possibly combines the effects of multiple genes and environmental factors. Hence, exposure to insecticides such as imidacloprid (IMI) has been used to replicate the changes observed in these disorders. Lutein is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and is associated with neuroprotective effects. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of lutein-loaded nanoparticles, along with their mechanisms of action, on Drosophila melanogaster offspring exposed to IMI-induced damage. To simulate the neurodevelopmental disorder model, flies were exposed to a diet containing IMI for 7 days. Posteriorly, their offspring were exposed to a diet containing lutein-loaded nanoparticles for a period of 24 h, and male and female flies were subjected to behavioral and biochemical evaluations. Treatment with lutein-loaded nanoparticles reversed the parameters of hyperactivity, aggressiveness, social interaction, repetitive movements, and anxiety in the offspring of flies exposed to IMI. It also protected markers of oxidative stress and cell viability, in addition to preventing the reduction of Nrf2 and Shank3 immunoreactivity. Objectives : Investigating how nanoparticle systems interact in whole blood (WB) is critical to evaluating the effectiveness of malaria therapy. Methods: We decided to establish a pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) model of the quinine population in WB using Plasmodium berghei -infected mice, with a subsequent model comparison for nanocapsules coated with polysorbate (NCP80) or prepared with Eudragit ® RS (NCEUD). The WB quinine population pharmacokinetic model in rats was developed using plasma and partition coefficients for rat erythrocytes. Mouse WB quinine population PK/PD modeling was developed using allometrically scaled literature-free mouse quinine pharmacokinetic data and covariate values to obtain a WB population pharmacokinetic model for quinine and nanocapsules in mice. This allowed for PK/PD modeling of the quinine population with the WB concentration and parasitemia data in mice. All models were built in NONMEN. Results : The WB quinine concentration profiles in rats were characterized using a two-compartment model. Nanoencapsulation reduced clearance and central compartment volume and increased peripherical compartimental volume. A maximum effect model described the PK/PD of the quinine WB population in mice, demonstrating that NCEUD enhances the antimalarial effect. Conclusions : Quinine WB is a good surrogate for describing the response to exposure in malaria. NCEUD outperformed NCP80 and free quinine, suggesting that cationic surfaces improve the potential for treating malaria.

In this article, the relationship between the properties of different membranes (agar, chitosan, and agar + chitosan) and biodegradability in natural and sterilized soil was investigated. The membranes under investigation exhibited variations in the biodegradation process, a phenomenon closely linked to both the soil microbiota composition and their water affinity. Higher solubility in water and greater swelling tendencies correlated with shorter initiation times for the biodegradation process in soil. Overall, all tested membranes began biodegradation within 14 days, as assessed through thickness and morphological analysis parameters, demonstrating a superior degradation rate compared to low-density polyethylene films.

The health of road transport workers is affected by working conditions and life. However, there is a lack of studies on the level of stress and health of the families of these workers. This study aimed to evaluate the perceived stress level and family effectiveness of family members of road transport workers. A quantitative study was carried out with the family members of road transport workers in the southern region of Brazil. For data collection, a sociodemographic form, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Evaluation of Family Effectiveness Strategies were used. The data were analyzed by simple frequency, Spearman correlation coefficient (ρ) ( p < 0.05), and descriptive analysis from the perspective of Systemic Organization. The sample was composed of 49 family members of road transport workers. Perceived stress was higher in family members who had more than nine years of education ( p = 0.0403). Family members who scored higher in Family Effectiveness scored high on the targets of Control ( p = 0.0353) (Control aims to reduce anxiety and prevent and eliminate events that threaten family stability) and Growth ( p = 0.0360) (represented by attitudes that promote new roles in response to critical situations experienced by families, which require re-adaptation processes and adjustments). The Control target was significant ( p = 0.0353) in families that had more than three people. The Coherence dimension (concerning self-esteem, body image, personal identity, self-confidence, and sexual identity) presented positive significance ( p = 0.0244) in families with health problems and whose income was less than USD 792.00 per month ( p = 0.0072). The Individuation dimension (including functions and responsibilities, where talents are reinforced, as well as initiatives that allow for the incorporation of knowledge to assume behaviors against personal/family and environmental pressures), was significant ( p = 0.0138) in families with incomes over USD 792.00. The Maintenance System (strategies for decision-making, problem negotiation, ritual and traditional roles, communication patterns, standards, financial management, and approaches to maintaining family harmony) presented positive significance ( p = 0.0151) in families where drivers worked as intercity drivers, as did the Stability target ( p = 0.0196) (concerning the continuity of routines, structure, organization, traditions, and values assumed by the family and transmitted from generation to generation, which promote unity and the development of values, attitudes, and beliefs). In conclusion, social factors, such as education, income, diseases, type of worker activity in road transport, and number of people in the family, influenced perceived stress and family effectiveness, which demonstrates the need to increase the promotion of health care for the families of road transport workers.

Bacteriocins are antimicrobial compounds that have awakened interest across several industries due to their effectiveness. However, their large-scale production often becomes unfeasible on an industrial scale, primarily because of high process costs. Addressing this challenge, this work analyzes the potential of using low-cost whey permeate powder, without any supplementation, to produce bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS) through the fermentation of Latilactobacillus sakei. For this purpose, different concentrations of whey permeate powder (55.15 gL -1 , 41.3 gL -1 and 27.5 gL -1 ) were used. The ability of L. sakei to produce BLIS was evaluated, as well as the potential of crude cell-free supernatant to act as a preservative. Raman spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) provided detailed insights into the composition and changes occurring during fermentation. SERS, in particular, enhanced peak definition significantly, allowing for the identification of key components, such as lactose, proteins, and phenylalanine, which are crucial in understanding the fermentation process and BLIS characteristics. The results revealed that the concentration of 55.15 gL -1 of whey permeate powder, in flasks without agitation and a culture temperature of 32.5 °C, presented the highest biological activity of BLIS, reaching 99% of inhibition of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with minimum inhibitory concentration of 36-45%, respectively. BLIS production began within 60 h of cultivation and was associated with class II bacteriocins. The traditional healthcare model is focused on diseases (medicine and natural science) and does not acknowledge patients' resources and abilities to be experts in their own lives based on their lived experiences. Improving healthcare safety, quality, and coordination, as well as quality of life, is an important aim in the care of patients with chronic conditions. Person-centered care needs to ensure that people's values and preferences guide clinical decisions. This paper reviews current knowledge to develop (1) digital care pathways for rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity and (2) digitally enabled, person-centered care. 1 It combines all relevant research evidence, including the so-called real-world evidence, with the ultimate goal to develop digitally enabled, patient-centered care. The paper includes (1) Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA), a 2-decade journey, (2) Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE), the evidence-based model of guidelines in airway diseases, (3) mHealth impact on airway diseases, (4) From guidelines to digital care pathways, (5) Embedding Planetary Health, (6) Novel classification of rhinitis and asthma, (7) Embedding real-life data with population-based studies, (8) The ARIA-EAACI (European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology) strategy for the management of airway diseases using digital biomarkers, (9) Artificial intelligence, (10) The development of digitally enabled, ARIA person-centered care, and (11) The political agenda. Background: Obesity is a metabolic disease that affects many individuals around the world, related to imbalance between energy consumption and expenditure, which can lead to comorbidities. A healthy diet can significantly contribute to the prevention or treatment of this condition. Jabuticaba is an emerging fruit presenting a wide range of bioactive compounds and is being extensively studied due to its effects on lipid metabolism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the jabuticaba extract in the anxious-like behavior and in the lipid and oxidative metabolism in the context of obesity., Methods: Forty male Wistar rats divided into five groups were used. The animals received a standard diet and/or a hypercaloric diet and after 60 days of induction, interventions were carried out with jabuticaba extract (5% and 10%) via gavage for 30 days., Results: It can be observed that the jabuticaba extract was able to reverse the anxious behavior observed in obese animals and modulate parameters of lipid and oxidative metabolism. We observed a reduction in cholesterol and triglyceride levels compared to obese animals. Furthermore, we observed an improvement in oxidative parameters, with a reduction in protein carbonylation in the liver and modulation of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase. Contrary to expectations, we did not observe changes in leptin, adiponectin and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) levels., Conclusion: Our work demonstrates that jabuticaba extract can improve metabolic, oxidative and behavioral changes in animals with obesity. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) analysis based on body fluids has been widely applied in disease diagnose. Choledocholithiasis is a widespread and often recurrent digestive system disease, with limited data on factors predicting its formation and reappearance. Bile contains many components that could provide valuable diagnostic information; however, the current diagnosis of biliary disease by SERS focuses on detecting specific component in the bile, overlooking the complex interplay and correlations among multiple factors that could be crucial for accurate diagnosis. This work directly obtained multi-component SERS spectral information of raw bile from 46 patients. Characteristic information was extracted from bile SERS spectra using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), revealing variations in the content of characteristic components associated with different choledocholithiasis types and their recurrence frequency. Pearson correlation analysis was also introduced to reveal the interactions of primary active substances pertinent to choledocholithiasis diagnosis. The efficacy of PCA and Support Vector Machine (SVM) models in classifying stone types, presented an accuracy of 99.2 %. Furthermore, the interaction patterns among SERS characteristic components in choledocholithiasis recurrence frequency were revealed, and with the support of SVM, the prediction for different recurrence rates reached an accuracy of 95.2 %. Objective. The association between muscle damage and skin temperature is controversial. We hypothesize that including metrics that are more sensitive to individual responses by considering variability and regions representative of higher temperature could influence skin temperature outcomes. Here, the objective of the study was to determine whether using alternative metrics (TMAX, entropy, and pixelgraphy) leads to different results than mean, maximum, minimum, and standard deviation (SD) skin temperature when addressing muscle damage using infrared thermography. Approach. Thermal images from four previous investigations measuring skin temperature before and after muscle damage in the anterior thigh and the posterior lower leg were used. The TMAX, entropy, and pixelgraphy (percentage of pixels above 33 °C) metrics were applied. Main results. On 48 h after running a marathon or half-marathon, no differences were found in skin temperature when applying any metric. Mean, minimum, maximum, TMAX, and pixelgraphy were lower 48 h after than at basal condition following quadriceps muscle damage ( p < 0.05). Maximum skin temperature and pixelgraphy were lower 48 h after than the basal condition following muscle damage to the triceps sural ( p < 0.05). Overall, TMAX strongly correlated with mean ( r = 0.85) and maximum temperatures ( r = 0.99) and moderately with minimum ( r = 0.66) and pixelgraphy parameter ( r = 0.64). Entropy strongly correlates with SD ( r = 0.94) and inversely moderately with minimum temperature ( r = -0.53). The pixelgraphy moderately correlated with mean ( r = 0.68), maximum ( r = 0.62), minimum ( r = 0.58), and TMAX ( r = 0.64). Significance. The work and life routine of long-haul truck drivers (LHTDs) involve the use of truck stops and rest areas to meet their basic human needs. These extensions of their workspaces on the road do not always offer adequate physical structures and services that drivers need for optimal health. This study aimed to evaluate long-haul truck drivers' perceptions of food services, safety, physical activity, rest, and personal hygiene offered at truck stops and rest areas, as well as the correlation between these perceptions and sociodemographic, health, and work conditions variables. A cross-sectional, quantitative, and descriptive study was conducted with long-haul truck drivers from the southern region of Brazil. For data collection, a sociodemographic questionnaire and a Likert scale on food, rest, personal hygiene, safety, and physical activity services offered at truck stops and rest areas along Brazilian roads from March to August 2023 were used. The data were analyzed with simple frequency descriptive statistics. The sample consisted of 175 long-haul truck drivers. Out of these, 70.29% declared that the services of the truck stops and rest areas were charged; more than half (53.59%) of the professionals evaluated the rest service as "good" or "excellent"; the food services were "good" or "excellent" for 42.24% of the drivers. The spaces for physical activities were the worst evaluated as "bad" or "terrible" by 41.61%, followed by bathroom services (28.42%) and safety (34.24%). Rest and feeding services had better evaluations, while the services of bathroom, safety, and physical activity presented worse evaluations. Variables such as nationality, weekly working days, and marital status presented positive significance and influenced drivers' perceptions of the services offered at truck stops and rest areas. Drivers who were Brazilian and worked more than five days a week negatively evaluated the services of rest ( p = 0.018), safety [0.020], physical activity (0.003), and bathrooms (0.020). In addition, the physical activity services were better evaluated by single drivers than married drivers. These findings suggest that the work conditions and nationality may influence LHTDs' perceptions of services and structures of truck stops and rest areas. These findings may reflect a lack of investments and support efforts to improve basic services such as personal hygiene, a safe environment, and physical exercises, which are fundamental to the health of the workers and aimed at reducing vulnerability and a sedentary lifestyle and meeting the basic human needs of LHTDs.
