The growth of cover crops can contribute to the increase in phosphorus content at depth by root decomposition. The aim of this work was to verify the effect of cover crops on soil phosphorus availability and use by successive plants, and the accumulation of soil P in a no-tillage system conducted for 14 years. This research was carried out during the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 crop seasons, whose treatments have been installed and maintained since 2003. The experimental design was a randomized block design, and the plots consisted of spring crops: pearl millet, forage sorghum, sunn hemp, and additionally, a fallow/chiseling area. The evaluation of available P was determined by P fractionation. In general, in the two years of evaluation, the accumulation of P in the shoot dry matter was higher in sunn hemp growth, on average 25% higher than pearl millet in 2016 and 40% higher than sorghum in 2017. The highest contents of labile inorganic P were in the sorghum-soybean and fallow/chiseling-soybean successions, with values higher than 50 mg kg -1 of P in the 0-0.1 m soil layer. However, in the other layers analyzed, the cover crops obtained higher availability of labile inorganic P. The systems using cover crops recovered 100% of the P fertilized in soybean.

Daily violations of air quality have an impact on urban populations and cause damage to the environment. Thus, the study evaluated the violations of the daily concentrations of SO 2 , NO 2 , and PM 10 , in regions of the State of São Paulo (SSP), based on the National Environment Council (CONAMA) resolution no 491/2018 and the World Health Organization (WHO - World Health Organization. (2016). Ambient air pollution: a global assessment of exposure and burden of disease.) criteria. Daily SO 2 , NO 2 , and PM 10 data from 6 air quality stations operated by Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo CETESB (1996-2011) were organized and submitted to quality control, with data faults (gaps) being identified. The imputation of data via spline proved satisfactory in filling in the gaps (r > 0.7 and low values of Standard Error of the Estimate (SEE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The cluster analysis (CA) applied to SO 2 formed only one homogeneous group (G 1 ). Contrariwise, NO 2 and PM 10 formed two homogeneous groups (G 1 and G 2 ) each. The stations that showed the greatest similarity according to the CA were Cerqueira Cesar and Osasco. The cophenetic matrix generated for SO 2 (0.83), NO 2 (0.79), and PM 10 (0.77) indicate a satisfactory adjustment of the dendrograms. The exploratory statistics applied to groups G 1 and G 2 point to the high variability of outliers. The WHO criteria are more restrictive than CONAMA regarding daily violations, with a reduction in SO 2 and an increase in specific years for NO 2 and PM 10 . Such variability is due to the adoption of public policies by the SSP and the influence of meteorological systems, being confirmed by the Run test that indicated oscillations in the time series, mainly in PM 10 , and also recognized well-defined biannual cycles., (© 2024. Indigenous societies are known to have occupied the Amazon basin for more than 12,000 years, but the scale of their influence on Amazonian forests remains uncertain. We report the discovery, using LIDAR (light detection and ranging) information from across the basin, of 24 previously undetected pre-Columbian earthworks beneath the forest canopy. Modeled distribution and abundance of large-scale archaeological sites across Amazonia suggest that between 10,272 and 23,648 sites remain to be discovered and that most will be found in the southwest. We also identified 53 domesticated tree species significantly associated with earthwork occurrence probability, likely suggesting past management practices. Closed-canopy forests across Amazonia are likely to contain thousands of undiscovered archaeological sites around which pre-Columbian societies actively modified forests, a discovery that opens opportunities for better understanding the magnitude of ancient human influence on Amazonia and its current state.

The emergence of Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) infections among indigenous populations has been reported. Usually, indigenous communities live in extreme poverty and are at risk of acquiring infections. In Brazil, healthcare inequality is observed in this population. To date, there are no reports of CA-MRSA infections, and no active search for asymptomatic S. aureus carriage has been conducted among Brazilian Indians. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of colonization with S. aureus and CA-MRSA among Brazilian Indians. We screened 400 Indians (from near urban areas and remote hamlets) for S. aureus and CA-MRSA colonization. The isolates were submitted to clonal profiling by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and selected isolates were submitted to multilocus sequence typing (MLST). Among 931 specimens (nasal and oral) from different indigenous individuals in remote hamlets, S. aureus was cultured in 190 (47.6%). Furthermore, CA-MRSA was found in three isolates (0.7%), all SCC mec type IV. PFGE analysis identified 21 clusters among the S. aureus isolates, and MLST analysis showed a predominance of sequence type 5 among these isolates. Our study revealed a higher prevalence of S. aureus carriage among Shanenawa ethnicity individuals (41.1%). Therefore, ethnicity appears to be associated with the prevalence of S. aureus in these populations.

Spatial distribution linked to geostatistical techniques contributes to sum up information into an easier-to-comprehend knowledge. This study compares copper spatial distribution in surface sediments and subsequent categorization according to its toxicological potential in two reservoirs, Rio Grande (RG) and Itupararanga (ITU) (São Paulo-Brazil), where copper sulfate is applied and not applied, respectively. Sediments from 47 sites in RG and 52 sites in ITU were collected, and then, copper concentrations were interpolated using geostatistical techniques (kriging). The resulting sediment distributions were classified in categories based on sediment quality guides: threshold effect level and probable effect level; regional reference values (RRVs) and enrichment factor (EF). Copper presented a heterogenic distribution and higher concentrations in RG (2283.00 ± 1308.75 mg/kg) especially on the upstream downstream, associated with algicide application as well as the sediment grain size, contrary to ITU (21.81 ± 8.28 mg/kg) where a no-clear pattern of distribution was observed. Sediments in RG are predominantly categorized as "Very Bad", whereas sediments in ITU are mainly categorized as "Good", showing values higher than RRV. The classification is supported by the EF categorization, which in RG is primarily categorized as "Very High" contrasting to ITU classified as "Absent/Very Low". Agaricomycetes are highlighted for producing a variety of compounds and enzymes with nutritional and medicinal properties. However, the knowledge of the diversity of this group of fungi is still insufficient, as well as their biological and enzymatic activities. Thus, the objective of this work is to describe the occurrence, biological and enzymatic activities of Agaricomycetes from the Brazilian Amazon. The present study is a systematic review with the literature search done in the following databases: Scielo, Google Scholar, PubMed and ScienceDirect. The descriptors used were Basidiomycota, Agaricomycetes, mushroom, antimicrobial activity, antitumor activity, antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory activity, immunomodulator, enzymatic activity, and Brazilian Amazon. We used as inclusion criteria articles in Portuguese and English, published between 2010 and 2021 and that had the full text available and presented relevance to the exposed topic, and as exclusion criteria, works not done in the Brazilian Amazon, duplicate articles in the databases search or outside the topic under study. A total of 40 articles, published between 2010 and 2021, were selected for analysis. 230 species of Agaricomycetes fungi were described for the Brazilian Amazon, with the most frequent orders being Polyporales (52.60%), Agaricales (14.35%), and Hymenochaetales (13.91%). Six studies were found on antimicrobial activity for promising Agaricomycete fungi against the bacteria Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and the fungi Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis. For the antioxidant activity, a study described the species Lentinus citrinus with high amounts of antioxidant compounds. For enzymatic activity, five studies reported Agaricomycete fungi producing protease, cellulase, amylase, pectinase, laccase, and xylanase enzymes. This review shows the scarcity of studies on the description and technological potential of Agaricomycetes from the Brazilian Amazon, highlighting the need to encourage the study of this group of organisms.

Objective: To investigate the in vitro activity, synergism, cytotoxicity and cellular immunological response, as well as the molecular affinity between amphotericin B (AmB) and crotamine (CTA), derived from Crotalus durissus terrificus venom against Leishmania amazonensis., Methods: This study performed the inhibition of promastigotes and amastigotes' growth under different concentrations of the drug and pharmacological combinations (AmB + CTA) based on the Berimbaum method (synergism study). The lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) quantification method was used to determine the cytotoxicity of the drug and combinations employing four cell lines (J774, HepG2, VERO, and C2C12). Following, the levels of Tumour Necrose Factor-alpha (TNF-α) and Interleukin-12 (IL-12) cytokines, using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and nitrites, as an indirect measure of Nitric Oxide (NO), using the Griess reaction were assessed in the supernatants of infected macrophages. In silico approach (molecular docking and dynamics) and binding affinity (surface plasmon resonance) between the drug and toxin were also investigated., Results: CTA enhanced AmB effect against promastigote and amastigote forms of L. amazonensis, decreased the drug toxicity in different cell lines and induced the production of important Th1-like cytokines and NO by infected macrophages. The pharmacological combination also displayed consistent molecular interactions with low energy of coupling and a concentration-dependent profile., Conclusion: Our data suggest that this pharmacological approach is a promising alternative treatment against L. amazonensis infection due to the improved activity (synergistic effect) achieved against the parasites' forms and to the decreased cytotoxic effect., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. No-tillage cover crops contribute to better soil quality, being able to replace mechanized tillage management. This observation can only be made after several years of adopting conservationist practices and through research on soil-plant relationships. The objective of the research was to verify the relationship between the production components, physiological, root development, and physical-hydric properties of the soil in the yield of soybean grown in succession to different cover crops or with soil chiseling. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with four replications, comparing the cultivation of sunn hemp ( Crotalaria juncea ) and millet ( Penninsetum glaucum L.) as cover crops and a treatment with soil chiseling. The evaluations were carried out during soybean ( Glycine max L.) cultivation in the 2019/20 summer crop, that is, after 17 years of experimenting started in 2003. Rotation with sunn hemp increased soybean yield by 6% and 10%, compared with millet rotation and soil chiseling. The species used in crop rotation in a long-term no-tillage system interfere with the physical and water characteristics of the soil, affecting the physiological responses and soybean yield. The rotation with sunn hemp offers greater water stability to the plants and provides greater soybean yield in succession. Future research that better addresses year-to-year variation, architecture, and continuity of pores provided by crop rotation, and evaluations of gas exchange, fluorescence, and activities of stress enzymes in soybean plants may contribute to a better understanding of soil-plant relationships in long-term no-till.

Trypanosoma is a hemoflagellate capable of infecting a wide variety of invertebrates and vertebrates, such as Neotropical freshwater fish. The present study described and morphologically compared Trypanosoma spp., found in Platydoras armatulus , Valenciennes, 1840, in southwestern Amazon. Fish specimens were sampled in Ipixuna and Juruá rivers located in the states of Amazonas and Acre, Brazil. Fish blood samples were taken by cardiac puncture, and smears were prepared for quantification, morphometric measurements, and morphotyping (characterization of the trypanosomes according to their morphological variations) of trypanosomes found. Prevalence, mean abundance, and intensity of parasitism were estimated in the parasitized fish specimens. Five fish specimens were collected, showing a 100% prevalence of parasites in the host. We found two Trypanosoma morphotypes, A and B, in which A had the highest infection intensity in host specimens. We aimed to evaluate mortality and hospital admissions for chronic kidney disease in young adults according to sex and state in the northern region of Brazil, between 1996 and 2017. A population-based time series study using official data on mortality and hospital admissions due to chronic kidney disease in individuals aged 20 to 49 years old, residents of the northern region of Brazil, in the periods 1996-2017 and to 2008-2017, respectively. Chronic kidney disease was defined according to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (N18). The evolution of mortality from chronic kidney disease decreased by 0.881% per year over the period (1996-2017). In the states of Acre and Amapá, there was a reduction of 5.85% and -5.68% per year, respectively, and in Tocantins, an increase of 4.16% per year. The incidence of hospitalization did not vary between 2008 and 2017. However, 2 states showed an increase in hospitalization rates: Acre (6.08% per year) and Pará (2.83% per year), and 2 states showed a reduction: Amazonas (5.09% per year) and Tocantins (6.23% per year). In general, there was decrease in mortality rate overtime. However, rate of mortality due to chronic kidney disease increased in the state of Tocantins. Studies seeking control methods for infestation of Riphicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.) ticks (dog ticks) have been carried out in order to minimize damage to both the tick's hosts and the environment, the latter due to the misuse of acaricide products. In this regard, carvacrol has been used as a natural alternative against ticks as it displays several properties including acaricidal. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the ultramorphology and morphohistochemistry of the integument of semi-engorged R. sanguineus s.l. females exposed to different carvacrol concentrations. The findings indicate that the integument surface of females exposed to the highest carvacrol concentration (25 μl/ml) became wrinkled, suggesting dehydration or the result of integument cuticular and epithelial layer disorganization in response to the toxic product. Morphohistochemical integument layer alterations were more significant and intense in females exposed to the highest carvacrol concentration (25 μl/ml), confirming dose-dependent carvacrol action. Among other cell and tissue alterations, changes in epithelial cell shape, size, and arrangement (epidermal layer) were noted, alongside altered and pyknotic-shaped nuclei, suggesting a death process for these cells. This epithelium changed from simple cubic to stratified, also in response to the presence of the evaluated bioactive compound. Sediment cores were used to establish past environmental impacts associated with eutrophication, erosion and metal contamination in the subtropical Atibainha reservoir (São Paulo State, Brazil). We hypothesize that: (1) the levels of nutrients, determined by a spectrophotometric method, reflect the contributions of these elements over time and (2) changes in sedimentation rates, determined by 210 Pb geochronology, and metal flows, determined by ICP-AEOS, are related to anthropic activities. Stratigraphic changes in the analysed variables were used to divide the sediment cores into three intervals, according to PCA and cluster analysis (Euclidian distances, Ward's method). Interval I, composed by the period prior to operation of the reservoir, was influenced by organic matter levels. Interval II, between 1967 and 1993 (PC2: 14.94% of the total variability), a period of minor impacts, was mainly influenced by Mn (eigenvalue of 0.71) and Zn (0.74). Interval III, which included sediment deposited between 1993 and 2015 (PC1: 60.28% of the total variability), was influenced by the highest levels of the pigments lutein (0.86), zeaxanthin (0.90) and fucoxanthin (0.65), together with total nitrogen (0.78) and sedimentation rate (0.91), suggesting changes in the phytoplankton community composition probably associated to the intensification of eutrophication and erosion processes. Despite the limitations of applying paleolimnological techniques in reservoirs and the use of pigments as proxies in regions with higher temperatures, it was observed that the anoxic conditions and the aphotic environment in the hypolimnion acted to preserve pigments associated with the groups Chlorophyta (lutein), Cyanobacteria (zeaxanthin) and Bacillariophyta (fucoxanthin). The isolated analysis of nutrients was not sufficient to make conclusive inferences regarding the eutrophication history, since the levels of TP tended to decrease over time, in contrast to an increase in the levels of TN. Several studies have reported the relationship of deforestation with increased incidence of infectious diseases, mainly due to the deregulation caused in these environments. The purpose of this study was to answer the following questions: a) is increased loss of vegetation related to dengue cases in the Brazilian Cerrado? b) how do different regions of the tropical savanna biome present distinct patterns for total dengue cases and vegetation loss? c) what is the projection of a future scenario of deforestation and an increased number of dengue cases in 2030? Thus, this study aimed to assess the relationship between loss of native vegetation in the Cerrado and dengue infection. In this paper, we quantify the entire deforested area and dengue infection cases from 2001 to 2019. For data analyses, we used Poisson generalized linear model, descriptive statistics, cluster analysis, non-parametric statistics, and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models to predict loss of vegetation and fever dengue cases for the next decade. Cluster analysis revealed the formation of four clusters among the states. Our results showed significant increases in loss of native vegetation in all states, with the exception of Piauí. As for dengue cases, there were increases in the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and Mato Grosso. Based on projections for 2030, Minas Gerais will register about 4,000 dengue cases per 100,000 inhabitants, São Paulo 750 dengue cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and Mato Grosso 500 dengue cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The Myrciaria dubia (Myrtaceae) fruit is traditionally used to treat malnutrition due to its high levels of vitamin C and phenolic compounds. Because of its composition, this plant is very promising in the research of novel natural treatment for pain disorders. This study analyzed the phytochemical profile of M. dubia juice and assessed its antinociceptive and antiedematogenic potential. The phytochemical profile was determined through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), the oral antinociceptive effect of M. dubia 50% juice (Md50) was evaluated by formalin, hot plate and Complete Freund's Adjuvant tests and the antiedematogenic activity by paw edema. HPLC revealed the presence of ascorbic acid, rutin, and ellagic acid as major compounds. Md50 showed an antinociceptive effect in the acute and chronic phases of the formalin test. In the hot plate test, Md50 also induced an antinociceptive effect of 0.5 up to 6 h, showing antinociceptive and antiedematogenic potential without changing the spontaneous locomotion of animals. All protocols were submitted and approved by the Ethics Committee for use of Animals of the Lutheran University of Brazil (protocol No. 2013-30P).

Abstract: Musculoskeletal disorders gradually affect workers in different parts of the world, compromising their occupational health and quality of life. Professionals exposed to these symptoms include the motorcycle taxi driver, whose pain is due to the overuse of the musculoskeletal system and little time to recover it.To identify the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms in motorcycle taxi drivers in the city of Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil, West Amazon.Cross-sectional study, involving 296 motorcycle taxi drivers in the city of Rio Branco-Acre, Brazil, male, from December 2016 to February 2017. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire was used to collect information related to symptoms (pain, discomfort, or numbness) in the last 7 days of work. For the exclusion criteria were, being female; not reside outside the city of Rio Branco, Acre; having less than 3 months of work activity; not be carrying out their work activities at the time of application of the protocol; be limited by clinical or physical issues at the time of application of the protocol. The data obtained in the questionnaire were entered into the Epidata program (Epidata Association, Odense, Denmark) and then transferred to the STATA 10 statistical program (Stata Corp., College Station), for categorization and statistical analysis.The study population is over 36 years old; most reported having a partner and a higher education level. The average daily working hours of the participants were 12 hours, with the majority working over 12 hours daily. Most of the epidemiological variables factors were associated with musculoskeletal pain when the prevalence and prevalence ratio analyzes were performed. Higher prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms in the lumbar region is with 17.9%. In the lower limbs, the most affected joint was the ankle (5.7%), followed by the hip (5.07%) and knee (5.07%), respectively. The farming of Colossoma macropomum has intensified in recent years, leading to an increased need for research into the health of the fish. We therefore investigated the diversity of myxosporeans (Cnidaria: Myxozoa) infecting C. macropomum in a breeding system in the municipality of Rio Branco, in the state of Acre, Brazil. Twenty-four fish specimens were examined from June to August 2018. Our results revealed a high prevalence of infection, with 23 specimens (95.8%) exhibiting myxosporean plasmodia. Morphological analysis, based on light and electron microscopies, and molecular analysis (small subunit ribosomal DNA [SSU rDNA] sequencing) revealed the occurrence of three novel species of the genus Myxobolus. Plasmodia of Myxobolus guttae n. sp. were found in the fins of 75% of the specimens, and the myxospores were pear-shaped, measuring 12.3 ± 0.6 (10.3-13.5) μm in length, 8.1 ± 0.3 (7.1-8.6) μm in width, and 5.1 ± 0.6 (4.5-6.5) μm in thickness. The polar capsules were elongated and equal in size, measuring 6.8 ± 0.5 (5.8-7.6) μm in length and 2.5 ± 0.3 (1.8-3.1) μm in width, exhibiting polar tubules with 9-10 coils. The plasmodia of Myxobolus longus n. sp. were found in the gills of 45.8% of the C. macropomum specimens, and the myxospores were fusiform, measuring 16.4 ± 0.6 (14.7-17.3) μm in length, 7.1 ± 0.2 (6.8-7.7) μm in width and 5.5 ± 0.6 (4.4-6.6) μm in thickness. The polar capsules occupied more than half of the myxospore, exhibiting different sizes, the largest measuring 9.2 ± 0.5 (7.3-10.1) μm in length and 2.5 ± 0.3 (2.0-3.1) μm in width, while the smallest measured 8.5 ± 0.4 (7.1-9.1) μm in length and 2.4 ± 0.2 (1.9-3.0) μm in width. Both polar capsules contained polar tubules with 10-12 coils. For Myxobolus tambaquiensis n. sp., plasmodia were found in the opercular cavity of 41.7% of the fish specimens, and the myxospores had an oval shape, measuring 10.0 ± 0.4 (9.5-11.3) μm in length, 6.5 ± 0.2 (6.1-7.1) μm in width, and 4.6 ± 0.4 (3.9-5.6) μm in thickness. The polar capsules were elongated and equal in size, measuring 4.9 ± 0.2 (4.4-5.3) μm in length and 1.9 ± 0.2 (1.5-2.2) μm in width, closing with 8-9 coils of the polar tubule. The morphological and sequencing data of the SSU rDNA showed that the three species studied herein remain unknown to science, increasing the diversity of myxosporeans infecting C. macropomum, an iconic fish in South American freshwater fish farming. The SSU rDNA based phylogenetic analysis revealed that Myxobolus spp. parasites of C. macropomum did not have a monophyletic origin, identifying different times and pathways of the acquisition of parasites by this host species., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. The medicinal properties of Agaricomycetes mushrooms have been explored for millennia. Several biological activities produced by mushrooms have been evaluated worldwide. Therefore, this systematic review aims to present the studies that evaluated the biological activities demonstrated by mushrooms from Brazil. To select the articles, PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar databases were used, with publications between the years 2001-2018, using the key words "mushrooms," "medicinal properties," "extracts," and "Brazil." The articles were selected according to three inclusion criteria: made with mushrooms from Brazil; title and summary with assessment of biological activity of basidioma or mycelium extracts; title and summary with evaluation of biological activity of isolated compound. Exclusion criteria were: work not done in Brazil; review articles; duplication of articles and abstracts and full texts irrelevant to the topics in question. A total of 31 articles were selected. According to the way used to assess biological activities, 54.8% evaluated from basidioma extract, 32.3% from isolated compound and 12.9% from mycelium extract. A total of 12 biological activities were evaluated, the most frequent were antioxidant (22%), anti-inflammatory (12.2%), anticancer (9.8%), antimicrobial (9.8%), and cytotoxic (7.3%). A total of 22 species of Agaricomycetes were evaluated in the studies, Agaricus blazei (=A. brasiliensis) the most studied (35.5%), mainly for antigenotoxic and anticlastogenic/antimutagenic activities. The most common isolated compounds of Agaricomycetes evaluated were β-glucan, fucogalactane, mannogalactoglucan, amaurocin, and polysaccharides. Agaricomycetes studied in Brazil are promising for medicinal applications.

The activity of carvacrol was evaluated in R. microplus female ticks by estimating the mean lethal concentration (LC 50 ) and the acaricidal efficacy. Ticks were subjected to the Adult Immersion Test (AIT) to calculate LC 50 . From this value, the AIT was performed again at the concentrations of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% of the LC 50 . Two control groups were established: one treated with distilled water and one with the solvent (ethanol 50%). The following parameters were evaluated: female weight before oviposition, egg mass weight, pre-oviposition and incubation period, hatching percentage, egg production index, fecundity rate, estimated reproduction, reduction in oviposition and hatching, and product efficacy. The obtained LC 50 was 20.11 mg/mL. Egg mass weight, egg production index, pre-oviposition and fecundity rates of groups treated with 80% and 100% of LC 50 were statistically different when compared to control groups. The product efficacy in groups treated with 100% of LC 50 was 61.10%.

To analyze the prevalence of anemia and associated factors in primiparous parturient.Cross-sectional study conducted in a municipality of the Brazilian Western Amazon from July 2014 to December 2015. A convenience sample of 461 first-time pregnant women were interviewed. Data on their sociodemographic, clinical, obstetric, personal habits and nutritional status were collected. Anemia and iron depletion were measured by peripheral blood collection with hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum ferritin and transferrin saturation index. To test the association between the variables, the χ tests were applied and Poisson regression analysis with a 95% confidence interval was performed, and P < .05 values were considered significant. The Forward stepwise strategy was used to construct the adjusted model. These analyzes were performed using the STATA 14.0 program (College Station, TX, 2013).A higher risk of anemia was identified among adolescent; white; who had a partner; with unpaid occupation, with less than eight years of formal education. Residents in the countryside; smokers; who had more than six prenatal consultations and were overweight.Anemia was reported in 28.20% and iron depletion in 60.52% of parturient women. The variables studied did not have association with the anemia outcome, except alcohol consumption.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.), also known as the brown dog tick, is among the main tick species involved in the transmission of pathogens to humans and other animals and, therefore, the target of numerous control methods. However, due to the disadvantages of synthetic acaricides, the use of alternative products such as plant derivatives has been encouraged. This study aimed to evaluate the acaricidal potential of acetylcarvacrol and to determine its efficacy at sublethal doses for the control of R. sanguineus s.l. female ticks. In addition, as acetylcarvacrol was applied topically, morphological alterations in the integument were assessed. Acetylation of carvacrol was performed by reaction with acetic anhydride in a sodium hydroxide solution, being confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. The lethal concentration for 50 and 90% (LC 50 and LC 90 ) of unfed ticks and the efficacy of acetylcarvacrol in engorged females were determined after the Adult Immersion Test (AIT). For the evaluation of effects of acetylcarvacrol in the integument, routine histological techniques were employed after the AIT. The LC 50 and LC 90 in unfed females were 2.8 and 7.2 μL/mL, respectively. Regarding reproductive performance, after treatment with 8.0 μL/mL acetylcarvacrol 90.9% control was achieved, as ticks showed the lowest egg production index (EPI), hatching rate (HR), and fecundity rate (FR). In the integument, considerable morphological alterations were observed both in cuticle and epithelium. Thus, acetylcarvacrol affected R. sanguineus s.l. external coating and reproduction when applied at sublethal concentrations, probably contributing to a long-term control.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological, zootechnical, and environmental benefits of the use of growth-promoting virginiamycin in the pirarucu diet. The research was conducted at the Carlos Eduardo Matiazze Fish Center, Federal University of Rondônia. In this study, 96 pirarucu fish were distributed in excavated nursery, divided into two treatment groups, control (0.0 mg kg -1 ) and treatment (75.0 mg kg -1 ) of feed with virginiamycin, with 8 replications in a completely randomized design. With virginiamycin being incorporated into commercial feed, for 107 days of cultivation, the fish were slaughtered with an average weight of 9.18 kg. Carcass weight, flesh, residues, and internal organs/guts were evaluated to calculate slaughter yields, Spearman's correlation, and subsequently regression. For the quantification of micronuclei, a count of 1,000 cells per blade was determined. The means of the results obtained were contrasted by the Student's t -test ( α  = 0.05). Virginiamycin did not cause oscillations in the limnological variables of the nursery but could reduce micronucleated erythrocytes. The average yields in carcass, flesh, and waste were 67.43, 53.4, and 43.14%, respectively. Virginiamycin provided strong correlations ( ρ ) for better productive yields and lower slaughter residue. The hepatosomatic index indicated a strong relationship between liver weight and fat. Virginiamycin may be recommended for fish farming in pirarucu fattening because it contributes to the productive efficiency and sustainability of the fish farm system.2 ) for better productive yields and lower slaughter residue. Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s. l.) ticks are targets of acaricidal treatments due to their great veterinary and medical importance. Acetylcarvacrol stands out as a promising acaricidal substance for its increased biocidal activity and stability. Additionally, its toxicity to mammals is reduced when compared to the parent molecule, carvacrol. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of acetylcarvacrol on the morphology of ovaries of engorged R. sanguineus s. l. ticks. The animals were subjected to the Adult Immersion Test to calculate the lethal concentrations (LC 50 and LC 90 ) of acetylcarvacrol. Subsequently, the surviving ticks were dissected for collection of the ovaries. The samples were processed through routine histological techniques. The histological sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, bromophenol blue (protein detection) and PAS (polysaccharide detection). The alterations found in the ovaries were evaluated by morphometric and semiquantitative analysis. The LC 50 and LC 90 were 17.805 and 26.164 μL/mL, respectively. The most severe morphological alterations were disappearance of the female germ cells (oocytes), nucleolus vacuolization, thicker and irregular chorion, and decrease in size of the oocytes. Also, the content of proteins and carbohydrates in the oocytes were heavily affected by the chemical, as evidenced by a non-homogeneous staining pattern. The group exposed to the highest concentration of acetylcarvacrol (20 μL/mL) exhibited a statistically greater score in the semiquantitative analysis when compared to the other groups. The morphological changes in the ovaries may reduce the ticks' offspring production or generate descendants that will struggle to carry out essential biochemical processes during their lives. The objective of the study was to evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with Burnout Syndrome (BS) in Primary Health Care (PHC) nursing professionals from the state of Bahia, Brazil. A multicentre, cross-sectional population-based study was conducted in a cluster sample among 1125 PHC Nursing professionals during the years 2017 and 2018. We used a questionnaire that included sociodemographic, labor and lifestyle variables and the Maslach Burnout Inventory scale to identify BS. The associations were evaluated using a robust Poisson regression with the hierarchical selection of the independent variables. The prevalence of BS was 18.3% and the associated factors were ethnicity (prevalence ratio (PR) = 0.62, confidence interval (CI) 95% = 0.47-0.83), residence (PR = 2.35, CI 95% = 1.79-3.09), economic situation (PR = 1.40, CI 95% = 1.06-1.86), satisfaction with current occupation (PR = 1.75, CI 95% = 1.31-2.33), (PR = 1.60, CI 95% = 1.23-2.08), rest (PR = 1.83, 95% CI = 1.41-2.37), technical resources and equipment (PR = 1.37, CI 95% = 1.06-1.77), night shift (PR = 1.49, CI 95% = 1.14-1.96), physical activity practice (PR = 1.72; CI 95% = 1.28-2.31), smoking (PR = 1.82, CI 95% = 1.35-2.45), and satisfaction with physical form (PR = 1.34, CI 95% = 1.01-179). Strategies are needed to prevent BS, with an emphasis on implementing worker health programs in the context of PHC.

Background: Evidence suggests that sleep duration is related to blood pressure (BP), but the findings are still inconsistent for adolescents., Objective: To analyze the association between sleep duration and BP in Brazilian adolescents between 12 and 17 years of age., Methods: This study is part of the Study of Cardiovascular Risk in Adolescents (ERICA), a multicenter, school-based, cross-sectional study in 273 municipalities in Brazil. The sample consisted of 65,643 adolescents. Sleep duration was measured by a subjective method, and BP was measured by the oscillometric method. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between sleep duration and BP., Results: The mean sleep duration was 8.14 hours (± 1.40), with significant difference between the groups according to BP levels (P < 0.0001). The mean systolic and diastolic BP were 110.59 (± 11.87) and 65.85 (± 7.94) mm Hg, respectively, in the group of adolescents. Sleep duration was significantly associated with BP. Each increase 1 hour in sleep was associated with BP reduction in both sexes combined (P < 0.0001). Considering the effects of covariates, each increase 1 hour in sleep was associated with systolic BP (SBP) reduction among boys (P = 0.004) and SBP elevation among girls (P = 0.009), after full adjustment., Conclusion: The results suggest that each increase in sleep duration was associated with SBP elevation among girls. This study aimed to examine the antibacterial activity of extracts of Amazonian Agaricomycetes macrofungi. The sample comprised 168 specimen collected at the Zoobotanical Park of the Federal University of Acre (Brazil), of which 32 (19%) were isolated. Extracts of the 32 isolates and 28 Agaricomycetes basidiomata were prepared and tested for activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria, using the disc diffusion method. Of the 32 metabolite extracts of the isolated Basidiomycetes, 11 (34.4%) exhibited antibacterial activity especially against Gram-negative E. coli and K. pneumoniae bacteria, while of the 28 basidiomata extracts, 6 (21.4%) exhibited antibacterial activity mainly against the Gram-positive S. aureus bacteria. This study is the first to report the antibacterial activity of the Agaricomycetes species Coriolopsis caperata, Cyclomyces iodinus, Cymatoderma sp., Favolus tenuiculus, and Tyromyces cf. polyporoides, and contributes as the first investigation about the antibacterial potential of Basidiomycetes grown in Southwest Amazonia.

Leishmaniases, caused by Leishmania spp., are among the most prevalent infectious diseases in the world and their treatment may present high toxicity and side/adverse effects. This study evaluated the antileishmanial activity of the Hexanic Eluate subfraction from Maytenus guianensis bark (HEMg) incorporated in microparticles of PLGA. One batch of microparticles produced contained HEMg (HEMgP) and another contained the PLGA polymer alone (PCTE). The microparticles were characterized in regards to diameter, Zeta potential, encapsulation rate and morphology and their cytotoxicity was evaluated against J774 macrophages. The infection assay employing peritoneal macrophages witth L. amazonensis and cytokine dosages were performed on the cell supernatants. The groups of infected BALB/C mice were treated, euthanized and the parasite load and cytokine production were evaluated. The diameters and zeta potential were: 4 μm and -11.6 mV (PCTE) and 7.8 μm and -26.7 mV (HEMgP). The encapsulation rate was ≅ 15% and the morphology of the particles was spherical and homogeneous. In the infection assay, HEMgP inhibited the amastigotes by 70% (24 h) and 59% (48 h) and induced IL-12 and TNF-α production. HEMg in solution reduced the number of parasites in the lymph nodes by 50% and HEMgP administration increased the levels of IL-12 and TNF-α cytokines in lymph nodes and in the lesion site. When encapsulated, HEMg maintained its antileishmanial activity, but in a more attenuated and sustained form over time, showing promise as complementary/alternative therapy against cutaneous leishmaniasis., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. Thrombospondin-related adhesive protein (TRAP) is essential for sporozoite motility and the invasion of mosquitoes' salivary gland and vertebrate's hepatocyte and is, thus, considered a promising pre-erythrocytic vaccine candidate. Despite the existence of a few reports on naturally acquired immune response against Plasmodium vivax TRAP (PvTRAP), it has never been explored so far in the Amazon region, so results are conflicting. Here, we characterized the (IgG and IgG subclass) antibody reactivity against recombinant PvTRAP in a cross-sectional study of 299 individuals exposed to malaria infection in three municipalities (Cruzeiro do Sul, Mâncio Lima and Guajará) from the Acre state of the Brazilian Amazon. In addition, the full PvTRAP sequence was screened for B-cell epitopes using in silico and in vitro approaches. Firstly, we confirmed that PvTRAP is naturally immunogenic in the cohort population since 49% of the individuals were IgG-responders to it. The observed immune responses were mainly driven by cytophilic IgG1 over all other sublcasses and the IgG levels that was corelated with age and time of residence in the studied area ( p < 0.05). Interestingly, only the levels of specific anti-TRAP IgG3 seemed to be associated with protection, as IgG3 responders presented a significantly higher time elapse since the last malaria episode than those recorded for IgG3 non-responders. Regarding the B-cell epitope mapping, among the 148 responders to PvTRAP, four predicted epitopes were confirmed by recognition of antibodies (PvTRAP R197-H227 ; PvTRAP E237-T258 ; PvTRAP P344-G374 ; and PvTRAP E439-K454 ). Nevertheless, the frequency of responders against these peptides were low and did not show a clear correlation with the antibody response against the corresponding antigen. Moreover, none of the linear confirmed epitopes were located in the binding regions of PvTRAP in respect to the host cell ligand. Introduction: Chronic renal disease (CRD) affects a large portion of the population and is directly related to cardiovascular problems and hypertension, among others. Studies show that heart rate variability is directly affected by these problems. Physical-oriented exercises have been shown to be of fundamental importance in improving the adverse effects to dialysis treatment., Objective: To analyze the effects of aerobic training during hemodialysis on autonomic heart rate modulation in patients with CRD., Method: Experimental study of an open, single group clinical trial. In this clinical trial, patients with CRD will initially undergo international physical activity questionnaire and kidney disease quality of life short form protocols, as well as monitoring of heart rate systolic, and diastolic blood pressure. After evaluation of the initial parameters, patients will undergo an aerobic exercise program for 12 weeks, in 3 weekly sessions, lasting 30 minutes a session. These evaluations will allow for a greater control of the disease, and monitoring of any improvements in the quality of life and self-esteem of these patients., Ethics and Dissemination: This study was approved following the guidelines and norms that regulate research involving human subjects, in Resolution No. 466/12 of the National Health Council. It was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Juazeiro do Norte, with the number 1962 092. The current study tested the efficacy of a dietary immunostimulant additive (Aquate Fish™ ® ) on the growth performance, and on the physiological and immune responses of Arapaima gigas. Two trials were carried out: a feeding trial for 30 days with the experimental diets and a challenge trial for 7 days, in which fish were bacterial challenge (Aeromonas hydrophila) following by 60 s handling stress. During the feeding trial, fingerlings were fed diets supplemented with 0 (control), 6, 9 and 12 g Aquate Fish™ ® /kg diet. Dietary supplementation did not influence feed intake, feed conversion and condition factor, but increased the final biomass, number of erythrocytes, thrombocytes, leukocytes, lymphocytes, monocytes, hemoglobin, glucose, globulins and plasma triglycerides in fish fed at a concentration of 12 g/kg diet. After bacterial infection, mortality occurred only in fish fed control treatment, whereas respiratory burst of leukocytes, number of leukocytes and lymphocytes increased in fish that received 12 g of dietary supplementation. The results indicated that dietary supplementation with 12 g of Aquate Fish™ ® improved biomass and immunity performance of A. gigas fingerlings, without negatively affecting blood biochemical parameters., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Background: The mechanisms of activation and regulation of T lymphocytes and their cytokines in malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax are complex and poorly understood. Previous data suggest that T cells balance protective immune responses with immune mediated pathology in malaria. This study investigates the lymphocytic profile of patients infected with P. vivax by identifying and quantifying the specific sub-populations of Th1, Th2, Th17 and Treg cells and observing the correlation between parasitaemia and the number of platelets., Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in an endemic area of the state of Acre, Brazil. In order to obtain identification and quantification of lymphocyte sub-populations through flow cytometry, blood samples were collected from 50 individuals infected with P. vivax and 20 non-infected controls. To differentiate Th1 from Th2, the presence of cytokines IL-4 and TNF was examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Utilizing the Mann-Whitney and Spearman coefficient tests, comparison and correlation analysis were rendered to test the parasitaemia and the number of platelets relationship., Results: The data indicate that individuals infected with P. vivax present a significant reduction in Th1, Th2 and Th17 cell sub-populations when compared to the non-infected control group. A negative correlation exists between parasitaemia and platelet counts in individuals infected with P. vivax. There is no correlation of parasitaemia or thrombocytopaenia with any sub-population of T lymphocytes analysed. Interestingly, patients with serum Th1 cytokine profile present inversely proportional parasitaemia to the increase in the number of Th1, Th2, Th17 and Treg cells while patients with serum Th2 cytokine profile present directly proportional parasitaemia to the increase in number of Th1 and Th2 cells. Regarding the number of platelets, patients with serum Th1 cytokine profile show a correlation directly proportional to the Th17 sub-population. In contrast, platelet counts are directly proportional only to Treg and activated Treg cells in patients with serum Th2 cytokine profile., Conclusions: During the P. vivax infection patients with serum Th1 versus Th2 cytokine profile present different biological mechanisms for activating the immune system against parasite load.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to identify the characteristics related to crash and victim, as well as the after-effects/disabilities and consequences arising from traffic crashes occurring in the city of Rio Branco-Acre., Methods: This is an analytical descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in the City of Rio Branco-Acre. The study population consisted of 405 residents of the city who were victims of traffic crashes, of all age groups and genders, who were hospitalized for the first time as a result of the crash in public hospitals and the health system network, as recorded in the Hospital Information System, and who were discharged between January 1 and December 31, 2010. The data sources included hospital record consultations and active searches for the victims. Hierarchical logistic regression was performed to evaluate the factors associated with the after-effects., Results: The majority of the study population was motorcycle victims (68.6%), male, and young (20-39 years). Concerning the after-effects, the following were significantly associated: factors related to the presence of a postcrash activity limitation (odds ratio [OR] = 2.39; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.39-6.76), length of hospital stay in days (OR = 1 03; 95% CI, 1.01-1.06), and surgical treatment (OR = 1.82; 95% CI, 1.03-3.21). Those who suffered damage to soft tissue and nerves or facial injury showed an odds ratio of 2 to 4 times of having an after-effect/disability, independent of the victim's personal attributes., Conclusion: The mechanism, such as the origin of the pattern of injuries, explains the exposure factors shown by each attribute of the victim and their characteristics. Many of the injuries were precursors to after-effects/disabilities, which, due to their nature and extent, result in the modification of the apparently healthy living standards of young victims who are routinely injured in traffic crashes. Therefore, public policies for prevention should be formulated, reformulated, and implemented, taking into account each attribute of the victims and their social conditions, because these are closely related to their habits and customs. This is a starting point for promoting changes to the current reality that traffic crashes present in the morbidity and mortality of the population.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between individual natural light exposure, sleep need, and depression at two latitudes, one extreme with a few hours of light per day during winter, and the other with equal hours of light and darkness throughout the year., Methods: This cross-sectional study included a sample of Brazilian workers (Equatorial, n = 488 workers) and a Swedish sample (Arctic, n = 1,273)., Results: The reported mean total natural light exposure per 4-week cycle differed significantly between the Equatorial and Arctic regions. However, shiftworkers from both sites reported similar hours of natural light exposure. Short light exposure was a predictor for insufficient sleep., Conclusion: Reduced exposure to natural light appears to increase the perception of obtaining insufficient sleep. Arctic workers were more prone to develop depression than Equatorial workers.
