Environment coatings are frequently considered, to improve the corrosion resistance of silicon carbide (SiC) in pressurized water reactor (PWR) and boiling water reactor (BWR) surroundings. Chromium (Cr) is one of the main candidate materials for coatings on zirconium-based alloys for accident-tolerant fuel (AFT) cladding. In this work, the magnetron sputtered Cr coatings on SiC substrates were irradiated by the 500 keV He+ ions at room temperature. Moreover, the microstructural characterization was conducted on the irradiated specimens by using scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The scratch test showed that the coating-substrate adhesion decreased from 41 N to 28 N (∼31.7%) before and after the irradiation, maybe due to that the irradiation produced tensile strain in the coating and mesophase along the coating-substrate interface. It revealed that irradiation accelerated the migration and aggregation of C elements on the surface of the coating. After the 800 °C annealing for 20 min, massive Cr atoms diffused into the SiC matrix and reacted with Cr to form a chromium silicide interlayer. Some cracks were observed at the interface, being attributed to the Kirkendall effect. Therefore, it is very necessary to avoid the formation of chromium silicide interlayer and decrease swelling mismatch between the metal coatings and the SiC substrate for the actual application in nuclear systems.

Abstract Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) has a substantial impact on the clinical outcomes and quality of life (QOL) of patients with cirrhosis. However, timely diagnosis and intervention are challenging due to sophisticated diagnostic methods. In this study, 673 healthy controls and 905 patients with cirrhosis were screened, and 660 healthy controls and 757 patients with cirrhosis, divided into the test (292 patients) and validation (465 patients) cohort, were analyzed after screening. A diagnostic model of the Stroop test (Stroop‐CN) was constructed by multivariate linear regression based on the results of healthy controls. The prevalence of MHE and the comparison results with psychometric hepatic encephalopathy score through the Stroop‐CN model were stable in the test and validation cohorts. Moreover, the prevalence of MHE remained significantly higher in patients with worse disease conditions marked as high Child–Pugh grades and the Model for End‐stage Liver Disease and Sodium (MELD‐Na) scores in the test and validation cohort. The EuroQol 5‐D questionnaire revealed that patients with MHE had a worse QOL than those without MHE both in the test and validation cohort. In conclusion, an easy and practical Stroop‐CN model for MHE diagnosis based on the EncephalApp is established. It is found that a considerable number of Chinese patients with cirrhosis experience MHE, which significantly impacts their QOL.

Abstract Background The surge in omicron variants has caused nationwide breakthrough infections in mainland China since the December 2022. In this study, we report the neutralization profiles of serum samples from the patients with breast cancer and the patients with liver cancer who had contracted subvariant breakthrough infections. Methods In this real‐world study, we enrolled 143 COVID‐19‐vaccinated (81 and 62 patients with breast and liver cancers) and 105 unvaccinated patients with cancer (58 and 47 patients with breast and liver cancers) after omicron infection. Anti‐spike receptor binding domain (RBD) IgGs and 50% pseudovirus neutralization titer (pVNT50) for the preceding (wild type), circulating omicron (BA.4‐BA.5, and BF.7), and new subvariants (XBB.1.5) were comprehensively analyzed. Results Patients with liver cancer receiving booster doses had higher levels of anti‐spike RBD IgG against circulating omicron (BA.4‐BA.5, and BF.7) and a novel subvariant (XBB.1.5) compared to patients with breast cancer after breakthrough infection. Additionally, all vaccinated patients produced higher neutralizing antibody titers against circulating omicron (BA.4‐BA.5, and BF.7) compared to unvaccinated patients. However, the unvaccinated patients produced higher neutralizing antibody against XBB.1.5 than vaccinated patients after Omicron infection, with this trend being more pronounced in breast cancer than in liver cancer patients. Moreover, we found that there was no correlation between anti‐spike RBD IgG against wildtype virus and the neutralizing antibody titer, but a positive correlation between anti‐spike RBD IgG and the neutralizing antibody against XBB.1.5 was found in unvaccinated patients. Conclusion Our study found that there may be differences in vaccine response and protective effect against COVID‐19 infection in patients with liver and breast cancer. Therefore, we recommend that COVID‐19 vaccine strategies should be optimized based on vaccine components and immunology profiles of different patients with cancer.

Abstract. Background. The outbreak and prevalence of the Omicron variant have threatened human health since March 2022 in mainland China. In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the Beijing region. Methods. In this retrospective study, we enrolled inpatients admitted for COVID-19 in the Fifth Medical Center of Chinese PLA General Hospital in Beijing between November 10, 2022, and January 30, 2023. Demographic and clinical features and treatment outcomes were comprehensively analyzed. We used logistic regression and linear regression analyses to explore the risk factors associated with disease severity and time of nucleic acid conversion, respectively. Results. A total of 1010 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 were enrolled. The median age was 43.0 years (interquartile range, 28.0–63.0), and patients aged 7 pg/mL, lactic dehydrogenase level >245 U/L, cough, and fever at admission. Age ≥80 years and chronic lung disease were independent risk factors in the nonmild group in elderly patients. In addition, the duration for nucleic acid to turn negative was approximately 5.0 d (interquartile range, 3.0–7.0). Prolonged time of nucleic acid conversion was associated with age ≥60 years, serum urea nitrogen level >8.2 mmol/L, neutrophil count >7 ×109/L, and the presence of a chronic lung disease or carcinoma. Finally, unvaccinated patients accounted for 37.3% of enrolled patients; children and the elder people accounted for approximately half of that. The univariable analysis found that booster doses reduced disease severity and shortened the time of nucleic acid conversion in elderly patients. Conclusions. The outbreak of Omicron rapidly increased the number of patients with COVID-19 in Beijing. In elderly patients, booster doses may reduce disease severity and shorten the time of nucleic acid conversion. Healthcare systems should be optimized before an emerging epidemic outbreak.

Abstract. A recent study revealed that the inhibition of the farnesoid X receptor using ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) significantly reduces angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) expression. Therefore, considerable attention has been paid to the use of UDCA to prevent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and reduce the severity of the disease. This review comprehensively summarizes the role of ACE2 in SARS-CoV-2 infection and the potential role and mechanisms of UDCA in the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infection or reinfection. It also discusses unresolved issues and the potential use of UDCA in the treatment of patients with coronavirus disease.

(1) Background: Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) are a series of unique organ-specific inflammatory toxicities observed in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) undergoing PD-1 inhibition combination therapy. The specific underlying mechanisms remain unclear. (2) Methods: We recruited 71 patients with HCC undergoing PD-1 inhibition combination therapy. These patients were then divided into two groups based on irAE occurrence: 34 had irAEs and 37 did not. Using Olink proteomics, we analyzed the aberrant inflammation-related proteins (IRPs) in these patient groups. For single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis, we collected peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from two representative patients at the pretreatment, irAE occurrence, and resolution stages. (3) Results: Our study revealed distinct plasma protein signatures in HCC patients experiencing irAEs after PD-1 inhibition combination therapy. We clarified the relationship between monocyte activation and irAEs, identified a strongly associated CD14-MC-CCL3 monocyte subset, and explored the role of the IFN-γ signaling pathway in monocyte activation during irAEs. (4) Conclusions: The activation of monocytes induced by the IFN-γ signaling pathway is an important mechanism underlying the occurrence of irAEs in HCC patients receiving PD-1 inhibition combination therapy.

Surrounded by the Shandong Peninsula, the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea possess vast marine energy resources. An analysis of actual meteorological data from these regions indicates significant seasonality and intra-day uncertainty in wind and photovoltaic power generation. The challenge of scheduling to leverage the complementary characteristics of various renewable energy sources for maintaining grid stability is substantial. In response, we have integrated wave energy with offshore photovoltaic and wind power generation and propose a day-ahead and intra-day multi-time-scale rolling optimization scheduling strategy for the complementary dispatch of these three energy sources. Using real meteorological data from this maritime area, we employed a CNN-LSTM neural network to predict the power generation and load demand of the area on both day-ahead 24 h and intra-day 1 h time scales, with the DDPG algorithm applied for refined electricity management through rolling optimization scheduling of the forecast data. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed strategy effectively meets load demands through complementary scheduling of wave power, wind power, and photovoltaic power generation based on the climatic characteristics of the Bohai and Yellow Sea regions, reducing the negative impacts of the seasonality and intra-day uncertainty of these three energy sources on the grid. Additionally, compared to the day-ahead scheduling strategy alone, the day-ahead and intra-day rolling optimization scheduling strategy achieved a reduction in system costs by 16.1% and 22% for a typical winter day and a typical summer day, respectively.

Background & Aims Acute kidney injury (AKI) is conventionally evaluated by a dynamic change of serum creatinine (Scr). Cystatin C (CysC) seems to be a more accurate biomarker for assessing kidney function. This retrospective multicenter study aims to evaluate whether AKI re-defined by CysC can predict the in-hospital outcomes of patients with liver cirrhosis and acute gastrointestinal bleeding.Methods Overall, 677 cirrhotic patients with acute gastrointestinal bleeding, in whom both Scr and CysC levels were detected at admissions, were screened. eGFRScr, eGFRCysC, and eGFRScr-CysC were calculated. MELD-Na score and AKI were re-evaluated by CysC instead of Scr. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated in the logistic regression analyses. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were performed.Results Univariate logistic regression analyses demonstrated that baseline Scr and CysC levels, eGFRScr, eGFRCysC, eGFRScr-CysC, original MELD-Na score defined by Scr, MELD-Na score re-defined by CysC, and AKI re-defined by CysC, but not conventional AKI defined by Scr, were significantly associated with in-hospital death. ROC analyses showed that baseline CysC level, eGFRScr, eGFRCysC, eGFRScr-CysC, original MELD-Na score defined by Scr, and MELD-Na score re-defined by CysC, but not baseline Scr level, could significantly predict the risk of in-hospital death.Conclusions AKI re-defined by CysC may be superior for predicting the in-hospital mortality of cirrhotic patients with acute gastrointestinal bleeding.

Abstract. Few studies have reported Legionella sainthelensi infection. This infection primarily presents with respiratory manifestations. Here, we report an immunocompromised patient with cavitary pneumonia caused by L. sainthelensi who mainly had abdominal symptoms. The timely administration of moxifloxacin provided clinical improvement and resolution of symptoms. To our knowledge, this is one of the rare cases of L. sainthelensi infection presenting uniquely with abdominal distension and liver function impairment but without obvious respiratory symptoms.

Xylenes and propylbenzenes (PBZs) are volatile aromatic hydrocarbons with high aquatic toxicity. Xylenes can be present in three isomers: o-xylene (OX), m-xylene (MX), and p-xylene (PX), while PBZs include two isomers: n-propylbenzene (n-PBZ) and isopropylbenzene (i-PBZ). Their accidental spills and improper discharges from petrochemical industries can cause severe contamination in water bodies posing potential ecological risks. In this study, the published acute toxicity data of these chemicals for aquatic species were collected to calculate hazardous concentrations protecting 95% species (HC5) using a species sensitivity distribution (SSD) approach. The acute HC5 values for OX, MX, PX, n-PBZ, and i-PBZ were estimated to be 1.73, 3.05, 1.23, 1.22, and 1.46 mg/L, respectively. The risk quotient (RQ) values calculated based on HC5 indicated their high risk (RQ: 1.23 ∼ 21.89) in groundwater, but low risk (RQ < 0.1) in natural seawater, river water, and lake water. When xylenes or PBZs leaked into the sea, they were expected to pose a high risk (RQ > 1) at the start and then a low risk (RQ < 0.1) after 10 days due to natural attenuation. These results may help to derive more reliable protection thresholds for xylenes and PBZs in aquatic environment and provide a basis for evaluating their ecological risks.

This study investigated the degradation characteristics of propylbenzenes (PBZs, including isopropylbenzene and n-propylbenzene), with high leakage risks and ecological hazards, by a newly isolated marine microalga named Rhinomonas reticulata S6A which is a promising candidate for eco-friendly bioremediation from marine. About 72% and 56% of n-PBZ and i-PBZ can be degraded after 7 days in culture. The acute toxicity of n-PBZ (96h - EC50 = 2.38 mg/L) was higher than that of i-PBZ (96h - EC50 = 3.65 mg/L). The growth inhibition kinetics of this strain were consistent with the Edwards model (R2 = 0.998) and Aiba model (R2 = 0.999). The optimal concentrations for the degradation of n-PBZ and i-PBZ were calculated to be 2.42 mg/L and 2.78 mg/L, respectively. The degradation trends of PBZs conformed to the zero-order kinetic model, and k increased with initial concentrations. The moderate increase in inoculation density could accelerate the degradation of PBZs, with the maximum specific growth rates (r) of 1.116/d (n-PBZ) and 1.230/d (i-PBZ) at the initial inoculation density of 104 cells/mL, while over-inoculation (initial microalgae density more than 105 cells/mL) was not conducive to the degradation of the pollutants. There is not much data on the biodegradation of PBZs in the aquatic environment, so it would be worthwhile to try to apply the new microalgae to explore the fate of PBZs.

The application of hepatitis B virus (HBV)–T‐cell receptor (TCR) T‐cell immunotherapy in patients with HBV‐related hepatocellular carcinoma (HBV‐HCC) has been apathetic, as the expression of HBV antigens by both normal HBV‐infected hepatocytes and HCC cells with HBV‐DNA integration increases the risk of on‐target off‐tumor severe liver inflammatory events. To increase the safety of this immunotherapeutic approach, we developed messenger RNA (mRNA) HBV‐TCR‐redirected T cells that—due to the transient nature of mRNA—are functionally short lived and can be infused in escalating doses. The safety of this approach and its clinical potential against primary HBV‐HCC have never been analyzed in human trials; thus, we studied the clinical and immunological parameters of 8 patients with chronic HBV infection and diffuse nonoperable HBV‐HCC treated at weekly intervals with escalating doses (1 × 104, 1 × 105, 1 × 106, and 5 × 106 TCR+ T cells/kg body weight) of T cells modified with HBV‐TCR encoding mRNA. The treatment was well tolerated with no severe systemic inflammatory events, cytokine storm, or neurotoxicity observed in any of these patients throughout treatment. Instead, we observed a destruction of the tumor lesion or a prolonged stable disease in 3 of 8 patients. Importantly, the patients without clinically relevant reductions of HCC did not display any detectable peripheral blood immunological alterations. In contrast, signs of transient localized liver inflammation, activation of the T‐cell compartment, and/or elevations of serum chemokine (C‐X‐C motif) ligand (CXCL) 9 and CXCL10 levels were detected in patients with long‐term clinical benefit. Conclusion: We show that despite the reduced in vivo half‐life (3‐4 days), adoptive transfer of mRNA HBV‐TCR T cells into patients with HBV‐HCC show long‐term clinical benefit that was associated with transient immunological alterations.

The increases in chemical shipping volumes increase the risk of hazardous noxious substances (HNSs) spills at sea. As one of the most frequently transported HNSs, acrylonitrile (ACN) spill incidents occur from time to time. The spilled ACN will have a wide range of short-term and long-term impacts on the marine environment. To reasonably standardise and optimise the emergency response countermeasures for ACN spill and maintain marine ecological health, the marine ecological hazards and physico-chemical behaviours of ACN were summarised. Based on this, the emergency response countermeasures for ACN spill at sea were studied and summarised in five aspects: spill source control, rapid prediction, emergency monitoring, numerical simulation and impact assessment, and elimination of ACN. This review forms a set of systematic emergency response countermeasures for deployment in ACN maritime spill incidents.

n-Butyl acrylate (nBA), a typical hazardous and noxious substance (HNS), is the largest-volume acrylate ester used to produce various types of polymers. With the increasing volume of nBA subject to maritime transportation, its accidental leakage poses a great risk to the marine organisms. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the ecological risk of nBA in marine environments. In this study, two species of marine microalgae, Skeletonema costatum and Phaeodactylum tricornutum, were used to explore the toxic effects of nBA based on their growth, pigment content, and oxidative stress. The growth of each species was significantly inhibited by nBA, showing a 96 h-EC50 value of 2.23 mg/L for P. tricornutum and 8.19 mg/L for S. costatum, respectively. Although chlorophylls a and c exerted a hormesis effect in P. tricornutum, contents of pigments generally decreased at high concentrations. In P. tricornutum, all detected antioxidants (reduced glutathione, GSH; superoxide dismutase, SOD; catalase, CAT; and glutathione peroxidase, GPx) were stimulated at concentrations ranging from 1.50 to 3.82 mg/L. However, these elevations were not enough to reduce the oxidative damage caused by nBA, because the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) increased continuously during 96-h exposure. For S. costatum, the activities of only two antioxidants (GSH and CAT) were enhanced, which is enough to prevent the MDA content from rising, even at higher concentrations of nBA (5–10 mg/L). The Integrated Biomarker Response Version 2 (IBRv2) index that combines responses of the above five oxidative stress biomarkers, was not only correlated positively with nBA concentration but could also indicate the occurrence of oxidative stress caused by acute concentration of nBA. These findings showed that P. tricornutum was sensitive to nBA compared to S. costatum, and the IBRv2 index was an effective tool for evaluating ecotoxicological effects on marine microalgae due to nBA spills.

Abstract Treatment of severe Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is challenging. We performed a phase 2 trial to assess the efficacy and safety of human umbilical cord-mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) to treat severe COVID-19 patients with lung damage, based on our phase 1 data. In this randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled trial, we recruited 101 severe COVID-19 patients with lung damage. They were randomly assigned at a 2:1 ratio to receive either UC-MSCs (4 × 107 cells per infusion) or placebo on day 0, 3, and 6. The primary endpoint was an altered proportion of whole lung lesion volumes from baseline to day 28. Other imaging outcomes, 6-minute walk test (6-MWT), maximum vital capacity, diffusing capacity, and adverse events were recorded and analyzed. In all, 100 COVID-19 patients were finally received either UC-MSCs (n = 65) or placebo (n = 35). UC-MSCs administration exerted numerical improvement in whole lung lesion volume from baseline to day 28 compared with the placebo (the median difference was −13.31%, 95% CI −29.14%, 2.13%, P = 0.080). UC-MSCs significantly reduced the proportions of solid component lesion volume compared with the placebo (median difference: −15.45%; 95% CI −30.82%, −0.39%; P = 0.043). The 6-MWT showed an increased distance in patients treated with UC-MSCs (difference: 27.00 m; 95% CI 0.00, 57.00; P = 0.057). The incidence of adverse events was similar in the two groups. These results suggest that UC-MSCs treatment is a safe and potentially effective therapeutic approach for COVID-19 patients with lung damage. A phase 3 trial is required to evaluate effects on reducing mortality and preventing long-term pulmonary disability. (Funded by The National Key R&D Program of China and others. BackgroundProgrammed cell death protein 1/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-1/PD-L1) immune-related adverse events (irAEs) are inevitable in patients with liver cancer. Although the incidence of severe irAEs is low, but can result in fatal consequences. To date, only a few commonly used clinical biomarkers have been reported.AimTo assess commonly used clinical biomarkers associated with the occurrence of irAEs to enable better management of irAEs by clinicians.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed patients with liver cancer treated with at least one cycle of PD-1 immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) combined with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). IrAEs were documented according to the common terminology criteria for adverse events version 5. Clinical and laboratory parameters were also evaluated.ResultsA total of 67 patients were included, 36 with irAEs and 31 without irAEs. A total of 104 adverse events occurred; 83 of these events were grade 1/2 (G1/G2), 21 were grade 3/4 (G3/G4), and one died of G4 hepatitis. BackgroundThus far, few studies have investigated the safety and efficacy of programmed death-1 (PD-1) immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) antibodies in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related liver cancer.ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of combination therapy with programmed death-1 (PD-1) immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) on HBV-related liver cancer.MethodsUntil January 31, 2022, liver cancer patients with hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) or HBV DNA positivity, treated with PD-1 ICIs and TKIs combined with nucleoside analogs (NAs), were retrospectively reviewed. The correlation between the change in HBV DNA and HBsAg levels and tumor response was analyzed using the χ2 test. Cox univariate and multivariate survival analyses and Kaplan–Meier curves were used to identify and compare risk factors and overall survival (OS).ResultsA total of 48 patients were enrolled in the study, with an objective response rate (ORR) of 31.3%, a disease control rate (DCR) of 66.7%; the incidence of adverse events was mostly mild. A significant decrease in HBV DNA and HBsAg levels was observed at 12 and 24 weeks compared with the baseline (p < 0.05). Compared to patients with progressive disease (PD), patients with disease control showed a more significant decrease in HBV DNA and HBsAg levels at 12 and 24 weeks (p < 0.001). Eleven patients showed elevations in HBV DNA level and one of them showed HBV reactivation; however, the reactivation was not associated hepatitis. Moreover, eight patients showed elevation in HBsAg. Elevation in HBV DNA level was associated with poor tumor response (P=0.001, OR=18.643 [95% CI: 3.271–106.253]). Cox survival analysis suggested that HBV DNA increase (P=0.011, HR=4.816, 95% CI: 1.439–16.117) and HBsAg increase (P=0.022, HR=4.161, 95% CI: 1.224–16.144) were independent risk factors associated with survival time. Kaplan–Meier curves suggested that patients who exhibited an increase in HBV DNA (6.87 months vs undefined, log-rank test: p= 0.004) and HBsAg (8.07 months vs undefined, log-rank test: p= 0.004) levels had a shorter median survival time (MST). Background: Liver cirrhosis is a major global health burden worldwide due to its high risk of morbidity and mortality. Role of terlipressin for the management of liver cirrhosis–related complications has been recognized during recent years. This article aims to develop evidence-based clinical practice guidance on the use of terlipressin for liver cirrhosis–related complications. Methods: Hepatobiliary Study Group of the Chinese Society of Gastroenterology of the Chinese Medical Association and Hepatology Committee of the Chinese Research Hospital Association have invited gastroenterologists, hepatologists, infectious disease specialists, surgeons, and clinical pharmacists to formulate the clinical practice guidance based on comprehensive literature review and experts’ clinical experiences. Results: Overall, 10 major guidance statements regarding efficacy and safety of terlipressin in liver cirrhosis were proposed. Terlipressin can be beneficial for the management of cirrhotic patients with acute variceal bleeding and hepatorenal syndrome (HRS). However, the evidence regarding the use of terlipressin in cirrhotic patients with ascites, post-paracentesis circulatory dysfunction, and bacterial infections and in those undergoing hepatic resection and liver transplantation remains insufficient. Terlipressin-related adverse events, mainly including gastrointestinal symptoms, electrolyte disturbance, and cardiovascular and respiratory adverse events, should be closely monitored. Conclusion: The current clinical practice guidance supports the use of terlipressin for gastroesophageal variceal bleeding and HRS in liver cirrhosis. High-quality studies are needed to further clarify its potential effects in other liver cirrhosis–related complications.

Adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) experiments are a serviceable method for the industrial utilization of the microalgae, which can improve the phenotype, performance, and stability of microalgae to obtain strains containing beneficial mutations. In this article, we reviewed the research into the microalgae ALE test and assessed the improvement of microalgae growth, tolerance, metabolism, and substrate utilization by ALE. In addition, the principles of ALE and the key factors of experimental design, as well as the issues and drawbacks of the microalgae ALE method were discussed. In general, improving the efficiency of ALE and verifying the stability of ALE resulting strains are the primary problems that need to be solved in future research, making it a promising method for the application of microalgae biotechnology.

Objective: At present, the association of body mass index (BMI) with the prognosis of liver cirrhosis is controversial. FeCrAl alloy is a promising candidate material for the fourth-generation reactor core cladding material. Adjustment of the Cr content is one of the effective ways to obtain enhanced performance for the FeCrAl alloy. In this work, Fe–xCr–6Al alloy (11 ≤ x ≤ 15) with different Cr content were successfully prepared by hot rolling. When Cr replacement of Fe atoms in Fe–xCr–6Al alloy rises from 11 to 15wt%, the lattice distortion of Fe–xCr–6Al alloy increases, and the mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of the Fe–xCr–6Al alloy are raised. Compared with Al content, Cr content has less effect on Fe–xCr–6Al oxidation resistance.

Marine microalgae with high removal efficiency of phenol are needed for the remediation of polluted seawater in cases involving phenol spills. To achieve this purpose, adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) was performed by a microalga Isochrysis galbana Parke MACC/H59, which is capable of degrading phenol at concentrations of less than 100 mg L−1 in 4 d. Two acclimation conditions were used: (i) 90 d at 100 mg L−1 phenol, and (ii) 90 d at 100 mg L−1 phenol followed by another 90 d at 200 mg L−1 phenol. By doing so, two strains (PAS-1 and PAS-2) could be obtained respectively. They grew rapidly at phenol concentrations up to 200 mg L−1 and 300 mg L−1, respectively, with a specific growth rate 2.52–3.40 times and 1.93–3.23 times that of the control (without phenol). Also, both strains had a higher removal capacity of phenol than the unacclimated alga. Phenol at an initial concentration of 200 mg L−1 was completely removed in 5 d thereby. For 300 mg L−1 phenol, a removal efficiency of 92% was achieved in 10 days by using PAS-2, with a removal rate constant of 30.01 d−1 (about twice that of PAS-1) and a half-life of 4.90 d (about half that of PAS-1), showing that a better strain may be obtained by extending the acclimation time. The enhancement of phenol biodegradation can be explained by the elevated activity of phenol hydroxylase (PH) in both strains. These results indicated that ALE could be an efficient tool used to enhance the tolerance and biodegradation of marine microalgae to phenol in seawater.

SARS-CoV-2 is the cause of the current global pandemic of COVID-19; this virus infects multiple organs, such as the lungs and gastrointestinal tract. The microbiome in these organs, including the bacteriome and virome, responds to infection and might also influence disease progression and treatment outcome. In a cohort of 13 COVID-19 patients in Beijing, China, we observed that the gut virome and bacteriome in the COVID-19 patients were notably different from those of five healthy controls. We identified a bacterial dysbiosis signature by observing reduced diversity and viral shifts in patients, and among the patients, the bacterial/viral compositions were different between patients of different severities, although these differences are not entirely distinguishable from the effect of antibiotics. Severe cases of COVID-19 exhibited a greater abundance of opportunistic pathogens but were depleted for butyrate-producing groups of bacteria compared with mild to moderate cases. We replicated our findings in a mouse COVID-19 model, confirmed virome differences and bacteriome dysbiosis due to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and observed that immune/infection-related genes were differentially expressed in gut epithelial cells during infection, possibly explaining the virome and bacteriome dynamics. Our results suggest that the components of the microbiome, including the bacteriome and virome, are affected by SARS-CoV-2 infections, while their compositional signatures could reflect or even contribute to disease severity and recovery processes.

Abstract This study proposes a two-stage mixotrophic process for cultivating Chlorella vulgaris. Heterotrophic growth is the dominant step in Phase I (to increase microalgal biomass) and photoautotrophic growth occurs in Phase II (to improve biomass concentration and lipid production). The results show that the addition of the low-cost antioxidant sodium erythorbate (8 g L−1) significantly accelerates the growth of microalgae in the first stage with air aeration. Furthermore, a higher CO2 fixation rate was obtained in the second stage (at least 344.32 mg CO2 L−1 day−1) with 10% CO2 aeration. This approximately corresponds to an increase of 177% over simple photoautotrophic cultivation with 10% CO2 aeration during the whole period. The two-stage cultivation strategy achieved a maximum C. vulgaris biomass concentration of 3.45 g L−1 and lipid productivity of 43.70 mg L−1 day−1, which are 1.85 and 1.64 times those arising due to simple photoautotrophy, respectively. Moreover, an analysis of the product’s fatty acid profile indicates that C. vulgaris might be an ideal candidate for two-stage mixotrophic cultivation of a renewable biomass for use in biodiesel applications. Another interesting point to note from the study is that it is an insufficiency of N and CO2 that probably limits the further growth of C. vulgaris.

Introduction: Preliminary data suggested that non-invasive methods could be useful to assess presence of oesophageal varices (OV) in liver cirrhosis. The primary objectives were to investigate non-invasive markers for diagnosing and grading OV in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. Material and methods: This study included a total of 106 consecutive treatment-naive patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). Results of physical examination, blood tests, and abdominal ultrasound scan (USS) were measured. Performance of non-invasive markers for OV was expressed as sensitivity, specificity, positive, and negative predictive values (PPV, NPV), accuracy, and area under the curve (AUC). Results: Oesophageal varices were found in 54 (50.9%) and large OV in 28 of the 106 patients. Variables found to differ significantly between patients with any grade or large and without OV included increased spleen length, increased portal vein diameter, low platelet count, and low levels of albumin or low -glutamyltranspeptidase (-GGT) values. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve showed that spleen length (cutoff = 156.0) had AUC 0.753 (95% CI: 0.657–0.849), and high NPV (82.1%) to exclude any grade OV. Large OV could be excluded with NPV 70.6% by spleen length. Conclusions : Predictive risk factors that use readily available laboratory results and ultrasound scan results may reliably identify esophageal varices in patients with PBC.

Microplastics (MP) widely distributed in aquatic environments have adverse effects on aquatic organisms. Currently, the impact of MP on toxigenic red tide microalgae is poorly understood. In this study, the strain of Alexandrium pacificum ATHK, typically producing paralytic shellfish toxins (PST), was selected as the target. Effects of 1 and 0.1 μm polystyrene MP with three concentration gradients (5 mg L−1, 25 mg L−1 and 100 mg L−1) on the growth, chlorophyll a (Chl a), photosynthetic activity (Fv/Fm) and PST production of ATHK were explored. Results showed that the high concentration (100 mg L−1) of 1 μm and 0.1 μm MP significantly inhibited the growth of ATHK, and the inhibition depended on the size and concentration of MP. Contents of Chl a showed an increase with various degrees after MP exposure in all cases. The photosynthesis indicator Fv/Fm of ATHK was significantly inhibited in the first 11 days, then gradually returned to the level of control group at day 13, and finally was gradually inhibited in the 1 μm MP treatments, and promotion or inhibition to some degree also occurred at different periods after exposure to 0.1 μm MP. Overall, both particle sizes of MP at 5 and 25 mg L−1 had no significant effect on cell toxin quota, and the high concentration 100 mg L−1 significantly promoted the PST biosynthesis on the day 7, 11 and 15. No significant difference occurred in the cell toxin quota and the total toxin content in all treatments at the end of the experiment (day 21). All MP treatments did not change the toxin profiles of ATHK, nor did the relative molar percentage of main PST components. The growth of ATHK, Chl a content, Fv/Fm and toxin production were not affected by MP shading. This is the first report on the effects of MP on the PST-producing microalgae, which will improve the understanding of the adverse impact of MP on the growth and toxin production of A. pacificum.

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to longitudinally evaluate and analyze the role of interleukin-22-producing CD4 positive cells (IL-22) in the pathogenesis of Hepatitis C Virus recurrence after Orthotopic Liver Transplantation (HCV-OLT).Methods15 HCV-OLT, 15 age- and gender- matched non-HCV post-OLT (OLT) and 15 hepatitis C virus infected (HCV) patients were enrolled into our study from the liver transplantation and research center at Beijing 302 Hospital. We determined the frequencies of IL-22 using flow cytometry and expression of IL-22 mRNA using PCR in peripheral blood and liver tissue. We also divided HCV-OLT patients into rapid fibrosis progression (RFP) and slow fibrosis progression (SFP), examined IL-22 cells and analyzed the correlations between IL-22 frequencies and liver injury, fibrosis and clinical parameters. Moreover, we investigated the role of IL-22 in Human Hepatic Stellate Cells (HSCs).ResultsThe levels of serum IL-22, frequencies of IL-22 producing cells in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and expression of IL-22 mRNA and protein in the liver in the HCV-OLT group were significantly higher than that in the HCV and OLT groups. Furthermore, eight (53.3%) patients developed RFP after two years; another three patients were diagnosed liver cirrhosis. The frequencies of IL-22 were much higher in RFP compared with SFP, while no significant difference existed between OLT and SFP. Intrahepatic IL-22 positive cells were located in fibrotic areas and significantly correlated with α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and fibrosis staging scores, not with grading scores and HCRVNA. In vitro, IL-22 administration prevented HSCs apoptosis, promoted HSCs proliferation and activation, up-regulated the expression of HSC-sourced growth factors including α-SMA, TGF-β and TIMP-1, and increased the production of liver fibrosis markers including laminin, hyaluronic acid and collagen type IV.ConclusionPeripheral and intrahepatic IL-22 is up-regulated and plays a pathological role in exacerbating liver fibrosis by activating HSCs in HCV-OLT patients, which may predict RFP and serve as an attractive target for anti-fibrotic therapy.

Introduction. The aim of this study was to determine the serum biochemical markers that can predict the risk of haemorrhagic transformation (HT) before and after endovascular treatment (EVT). Material and methods. This study included patients with anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (ACLVO) who underwent EVT within six hours of symptom onset between September 2017 and September 2022. These patients were retrospectively categorised into two groups: an HT group and a No-HT group. Results. A total of 180 patients were included in the study, of whom 55 (30.6%) had HT. The monocyte count before EVT (p = = 0.005, OR = 0.694, 95% CI 0.536-0.898), the activated partial thromboplastin time before EVT (p = 0.009, OR = 0.186, 95% CI 0.699-0.952), and the eosinophil count after EVT (p = 0.038, OR = 0.001, 95% CI 0.000-0.018) were all found to be independent predictors of HT, with warning values of 6.65%, 22.95 seconds, and 0.035*10^9/L, respectively. When compared to prediction using only demographic data [AUC = 0.662,95% CI (0.545, 0.780)], adding biochemical indices before EVT [AUC = 0.719,95% CI (0.617, 0.821)], adding biochemical indices after EVT [AUC = 0.670,95% CI (0.566, 0.773)], and adding both [AUC = 0.778,95% CI (0.686, 0.870)], the prediction efficiency of HT was improved among all three combinations, with no statistical significance. Conclusions. The levels of serum biochemical markers were found to show significant changes before and after EVT in ACLVO patients. A combination of demographic data and serum biochemical markers proved to be effective in predicting the occurrence of HT in patients with ACLVO who underwent EVT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
