Imaging spectrometer observations were made of the surface of the Moon during the December 1990 flyby of the Earth-Moon system by the Galileo spacecraft. This article documents this data set and presents analyses of some of the data. The near infrared mapping spectrometer (NIMS) investigation obtained 17 separate mosaics of the Moon in 408 spectral channels between about 0.7 and 5.2 micrometers. The instrument was originally designed to operate in orbit about Jupiter and therefore saturates at many spectral channels for most measurement situations at 1 AU. However, sufficient measurements were made of the Moon to verify the proper operation of the instrument and to demonstrate its capabilities. Analysis of these data show that the NIMS worked as expected and produced measurements consistent with previous ground-based telescopic studies. These are the first imaging spectrometer measurements of this type from space for the Moon, and they illustrate several major points concerning this type of observation and about the NIMS capabilities specifically. Of major importance are the difference between framing and scanning instruments and the effects of the spacecraft and the scan platform on the performance of such and experiment. The science return of subsequent NIMS and other investigation measurements will be significantly enhanced by the experience and results gained.

A quantitative relationship is derived between the effectiveness of an atmospheric greenhouse and that of internal heat flow in producing the morphological differences between early and later Martian terrains. The derived relationship is used for two purposes: (1) to evaluate the relative importance of the atmospheric CO2 greenhouse effect and the internal regolith thermal gradient in producing morphological changes for any value of the heat flow (and conductivity values); and (2) to assess the absolute importance of each for specific values of the heat flow which are thought to be reasonable on independent geophysical grounds.

The new Seven-Color infrared filter system (SCAS), designed specifically to capture the essential mineralogical information present in asteroid spectra, is composed of seven broad-band filters which allow for IR observations of objects as faint as 17th magnitude. The first test of the SCAS system occurred in Jul. 1992. In four nights at the IRTF on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, over 67 objects were observed. Five of the observations were to test the new system for accuracy relative to previous observations with the high-resolution 52 Color Infrared Survey and with the Eight-Color Asteroid Survey (ECAS). In three cases, the match with previous data was good. In two cases, the match to previous observations was not as good. In addition, sixty S-Type asteroids were measured with the SCAS system. Forty of those asteroids were also observed with the ECAS system. Among the new observations is infrared data of 371 Bohemia, a main belt asteroid which was classified 'QSV' according to its UBV colors in the taxonomic system of D.J. Tholen. There are no corresponding ECAS data for 371. Q-type asteroids are of special interest as they are proposed to be the elusive parent bodies of the ordinary chondrite meteorites. Most Q-types are Earth-crossing asteroids and have not yet been observed in the infrared (except, perhaps, 371). Positive identification of a large main belt Q-type would be of major importance in the scheme of the geological structure of the asteroid belt. Without visible wavelength data, however, the classification of 371 Bohemia remains ambiguous. An attempt to conjoin Bohemia SCAS data with ECAS data of both a typical Q-Type asteroid and an average S-Type asteroid is shown. This figure thus illustrates the importance of visible wavelength data to the SCAS system. In other words, without ECAS data of 371 Bohemia we cannot use its spectral characteristics to identify it as a possible parent body of ordinary chondrite meteorites.

As the spectral reflectance search continues for links between meteorites and their parent body asteroids, the effects of optical surface alteration processes need to be considered. We present the results of an experimental simulation of the melting and recrystallization that occurs to a carbonaceous chondrite meteorite regolith powder upon heating. As done for the ordinary chondrite meteorites, we show the effects of possible parent-body regolith alteration processes on reflectance spectra of carbonaceous chondrites (CC's). For this study, six CC's of different mineralogical classes were obtained from the Antarctic Meteorite Collection: two CM meteorites, two CO meteorites, one CK, and one CV. Each sample was ground with a ceramic mortar and pestle to powders with maximum grain sizes of 180 and 90 microns. The reflectance spectra of these powders were measured at RELAB (Brown University) from 0.3 to 2.5 microns. Following comminution, the 90 micron grain size was melted in a nitrogen controlled-atmosphere fusion furnace at an approximate temperature of 1700 C. The fused sample was immediately held above a flow of nitrogen at 0 C for quenching. Following melting and recrystallization, the samples were reground to powders, and the reflectance spectra were remeasured. The effects on spectral reflectance for a sample of the CM carbonaceous chondrite called Murchison are shown.

This paper presents the results of an attempt to determine S-Type asteroid mineralogies with the use of Hapke theory spectral mixing modelling. Previous attempts to understand the spectral variations present in this single class of asteroids have concentrated on spectral parameters such as absorption band center wavelengths, band area ratios, and geometric albedos. The procedure taken here is to utilize the Hapke spectral reflectance model to calculate single scatter albedo as a function of wavelength for a suite of candidate end-member materials. These materials are then mixed linearly in single scatter albedo space, and the mixture is converted, assuming intimate particle mixing, back to reflectance for the spectrum matching routine. A total of 39 S-Type asteroids selected from the Bell et al. survey have been matched with mixture model spectra.

Previous arguments have suggested that the formation of the valley networks on Mars may be explained by higher internal regolith temperatures associated with a much higher heat flow early in the planet's history. It is possible that this higher heat flow could cause groundwater to be closer to the martian surface 3.8 billion years ago, and thus allow the formation of the valley networks by groundwater sapping, without having to invoke surface warming due to an atmospheric greenhouse effect. It was previously shown that, in fact, it may not be possible to completely separate the effects of higher heat flow and atmospheric greenhouse on early Mars. We have more fully explored the parametric space of our set of equations to better determine the sensitivity of the system to variations in any of the factors. The limiting factor in the effectiveness of an atmospheric greenhouse is the total CO2 available in the system. We find that a combination of higher heat flow and atmospheric greenhouse effect on early Mars may more easily explain valley network formation and distribution, even for a cool early sun, than either of these mechanisms separately.

The epochal climate change and volatile history of Mars are examined, with special attention given to evidence for and mechanisms of long-term climate change. Long-term climate change on Mars is indicated most directly by the presence, age, and distribution of the valley networks. They were almost certainly formed by running water, but it seems more likely that they were formed by groundwater sapping than by rainfall. It is argued to be physically plausible that a higher early intensity of surface insolation caused by a CO2 greenhouse effect could have overcompensated for an early weak sun and raised temperatures to the freezing point near the equator under favorable conditions of obliquity and eccentricity. This could account for the morphological changes.

The present quantitative modeling of convective, condensational, and sublimational effects on porous ice crust volumes subjected to solar radiation encompasses the effect of such insolation's penetration of visible bandpass-translucent light, but opaque to the IR bandpass. Quasi-steady-state temperatures, H2O mass fluxes, and ice mass-density change rates are computed as functions of time of day and ice depth. When the effects of latent heat and mass transport are included in the model, the enhancement of near-surface temperature due to the 'solid-state greenhouse effect' is substantially diminished. When latent heat, mass transport, and densification effects are considered, however, a significant solid-state greenhouse effect is shown to be compatible with both morphological evidence for high crust strengths and icy shell decoupling from the lithosphere.

The 1971 and 1973 Goldstone 12.6-cm radar observations of Mars are separate data sets which include reflectivity as a function of latitude, longitude, and season. It has been argued that secular reflectivity variations of Mars' surface are indicated by the data and that shallow subsurface melting is the causal mechanism most compatible with the observations; however, the melting hypothesis conflicts with accepted notions of the state and distribution of water on Mars. The data are examined to identify temporal and spatial domains within which statistically significant changes in measured reflectivity are clustered. Brines which might satisfy the best supported reflectivity variations are out of equilibrium with the chemical megaenvironment. It is unclear whether such a brine, if emplaced in the Martian regolith at a depth shallow enough to affect the radar reflectivity, could survive even a single freeze-thaw cycle. Some combination of unique scattering properties or some as yet unidentified process other than melting is responsible for any genuine reflectivity variations.

A comet nucleus model whose composition is a homogeneous mixture of water ice, CO ice, and dust, in a Halley-type orbit, is presently used to investigate the role of unclathrated CO ice in the activity and near-surface differentiation of comet nuclei. Temperatures of water and CO ice surfaces, CO gas and water steam fluxes, and depths of CO ice, are presented as functions of orbital position. It is determined that CO ice should always exist within 3 m of the surface; CO gas production exceeds water steam production beyond 2.5 AU, with consequences for the planned in situ elemental analysis of nuclei.

A quantitative model of the migrational history of any free water in the martian satellite Phobos is presented. Results include predicted depths of retained ice and current water fluxes as a function of latitude, regolith porosity and effective pore size. It is found that, despite Phobos' small size, low albedo and proximity to the sun, ice may be present within the sounding depth of the GRUNT experiment on the Soviet Phobos Mission - at least at mid to high latitudes. Implications for other experiments on the Phobos mission are also discussed.

Abundant martian brines would have important implication for current theories of volatile migration on Mars, since, although the presence of metastable brines is quite plausible, any brine in the reasonably near-surface should be completely depleted on a timescale short in relation to the age of Mars. It is important to determine whether brines exist in the martian subsurface, for the current paradigm for understanding martian volatile regime requires substantial alteration if they are found to exist. It is determined, however, that the prospect for detection of a subsurface brine via atmospheric water vapor measurements is marginal. Four reasons are given for this conclusion.

The chemical differentiation of a homogeneous, initially unmantled cometary nucleus whose composition encompasses water ice, unclathrated CO2 ice, and silicate dust, is presently simulated by an analytical model to test whether the selective sublimation of any free CO2 ice in the new comet will produce a surface layer of water ice and dust covering the undifferentiated core. The model encompasses the effects of nucleus rotation, arbitrary rotatiuon axis orientation, latitude, nucleus heat conduction, and CO2 gas outflow restriction by the water ice and dust layer.

Possible scenarios for the evolution of the Martian climate are discussed. In the interest of determining an upper limit on the absorptive capacity of the Martian regolith, researchers examined the results of Fanale and Cannon (1971, 1974) for CO2 adsorption on nontronite and basalt. There appeared to be a strong proportionality between the capacity of the absorbent and its specific surface area. A model of the Martian climate is given that allows the researchers to make some estimates of exchangeable CO2 abundances.

The presence of condensed SO2 on Io mandates a finite abundance of SO2 vapor which must be present, regardless of plume activity. The absorption of SO2 was measured on particulate sulfur and the equilibrium between absorbed SO2, SO2 vapor, and SO2 ice examined, based upon measurements and simple thermodynamic considerations.

It has been suggested that surface conditions on Io might be conducive to significant SO2 adsorption on sulfur or alkali sulfides. A number of spectroscopic arguments for and against the high abundance of a SO2 adsorbate (versus frost) on Io have been made. SO2 absorption isotherms on particulate sulfur are measured, and the question of SO2 adsorbate/ice is approached from a thermodynamic perspective. Because of formidable experimental difficulties, data were not obtained at the very low temperatures and P(SO2) characteristics of Io; however, data were obtained over a wide range of pressures and temperatures somewhat higher than Io's and extrapolated to Io surface conditions. Errors in estimating adsorptive capacity accrue through extrapolation of the adsorption isotherms; however, more significant is the addition of the solid SO2 equilibrium vapor pressure curve to the phase diagram. The formation of ice places a strict upper limit on adsorptive coverage at any temperature. The limit for Io based upon the data is calculated, and it is shown that no more than 0.014 monolayers of SO2 can adsorb on sulfur at Io temperatures. Given the assumption that sulfur forms the primary adsorbent on Io's surface, or the assumption that the adsorptive capacity of the other adsorbents is not substantially greater than that of sulfur, this explains the fact that the nu(1) + nu(3) band center position is in better agreement with that of frost than adsorbate.
