1. Reconciling the irreconcilable: window-based versus stochastic declustering algorithms

Abstract

Short-term earthquake clustering is one of the most important features of seismicity. Clusters are identified using various techniques, generally deterministic and based on spatio-temporal windowing. Conversely, the leading rail in short-term earthquake forecasting has a probabilistic view of clustering, usually based on the Epidemic Type Aftershock Sequence (ETAS) models. In this study we compare seismic clusters, identified by two different deterministic window-based techniques, with the ETAS probabilities associated with any event in the clusters, thus investigating the consistency between deterministic and probabilistic approaches. The comparison is performed by considering, for each event in an identified cluster, the corresponding probability of being independent and the expected number of triggered events according to ETAS. Results show no substantial differences between the cluster identification procedures, and an overall consistency between the identified clusters and the relative events' ETAS probabilities.

Abstract

PREdiction of NOn-LINear soil behavior (PRENOLIN) is an international benchmark aiming to test multiple numerical simulation codes that are capable of predicting nonlinear seismic site response with various constitutive models. One of the objectives of this project is the assessment of the uncertainties associated with nonlinear simulation of 1D site effects. A first verification phase (i.e., comparison between numerical codes on simple idealistic cases) will be followed by a validation phase, comparing the predictions of such numerical estimations with actual strongmotion recordings obtained at well-known sites. The benchmark presently involves 21 teams and 23 different computational codes. We present here the main results of the verification phase dealing with simple cases. Three different idealized soil profiles were tested over a wide range of shear strains with different input motions and different boundary conditions at the sediment/bedrock interface. A first iteration focusing on the elastic and viscoelastic cases was proved to be useful to ensure a common understanding and to identify numerical issues before pursuing the nonlinear modeling. Besides minor mistakes in the implementation of input parameters and output units, the initial discrepancies between the numerical results can be attributed to (1) different understanding of the expression “input motion” in different communities, and (2) different implementations of material damping and possible numerical energy dissipation. The second round of computations thus allowed a convergence of all teams to the Haskell–Thomson analytical solution in elastic and viscoelastic cases. For nonlinear computations, we investigate the epistemic uncertainties related only to wave propagation modeling using different nonlinear constitutive models. Such epistemic uncertainties are shown to increase with the strain level and to reach values around 0.2 (log10 scale) for a peak ground acceleration of 5 m=s2 at the base of the soil column, which may be reduced by almost 50% when the various constitutive models used the same shear strength and damping implementation.

Abstract

We discuss the thermodynamics of closed quantum systems driven out of equilibrium by a change in a control parameter and undergoing a unitary process. We compare the work actually done on the system with the one that would be performed along ideal adiabatic and isothermal transformations. The comparison with the latter leads to the introduction of irreversible work, while that with the former leads to the introduction of inner friction. We show that these two quantities can be treated on equal footing, as both can be linked with the heat exchanged in thermalization processes and both can be expressed as relative entropies. Furthermore, we show that a specific fluctuation relation for the entropy production associated with the inner friction exists, which allows the inner friction to be written in terms of its cumulants., Comment: improved text, new citations added

Abstract

Disorders of consciousness are neurological conditions characterized by impaired arousal and awareness of self and environment. Behavioural responses are absent or are present but fluctuate. Disorders of consciousness are commonly encountered as a consequence of both acute and chronic brain injuries, yet reliable epidemiological estimates would require inclusive, operational definitions of the concept, as well as wider knowledge dissemination among involved professionals. Whereas several manifestations have been described, including coma, vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and minimally conscious state, a comprehensive neurobiological definition for disorders of consciousness is still lacking. The scientific literature is primarily observational, and studies-specific aetiologies lead to disorders of consciousness. Despite advances in these disease-related forms, there remains uncertainty about whether disorders of consciousness are a disease-agnostic unitary entity with a common mechanism, prognosis or treatment response paradigm. Our knowledge of disorders of consciousness has also been hampered by heterogeneity of study designs, variables, and outcomes, leading to results that are not comparable for evidence synthesis. The different backgrounds of professionals caring for patients with disorders of consciousness and the different goals at different stages of care could partly explain this variability. The Prospective Studies working group of the Neurocritical Care Society Curing Coma Campaign was established to create a platform for observational studies and future clinical trials on disorders of consciousness and coma across the continuum of care. Abstract

We investigate the entanglement content of the ground state of a system characterized by effective elementary degrees of freedom with fractional statistics. To this end, we explicitly construct the ground state for a chain of $N$ spins with inverse square interaction (the Haldane-Shastry model) in the presence of an external uniform magnetic field. For such a system at zero temperature, we evaluate the entanglement in the ground state both at finite size and in the thermodynamic limit. Abstract

The convergence of an interdisciplinary team of neurocritical care specialists to organize the Curing Coma Campaign is the first effort of its kind to coordinate national and international research efforts aimed at a deeper understanding of disorders of consciousness (DoC). This process of understanding includes translational research from bench to bedside, descriptions of systems of care delivery, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and ethical frameworks. The description and measurement of varying confounding factors related to hospital care was thought to be critical in furthering meaningful research in patients with DoC. Interdisciplinary hospital care is inherently varied across geographical areas as well as community and academic medical centers. Access to monitoring technologies, specialist consultation (medical, nursing, pharmacy, respiratory, and rehabilitation), staffing resources, specialty intensive and acute care units, specialty medications and specific surgical, diagnostic and interventional procedures, and imaging is variable, and the impact on patient outcome in terms of DoC is largely unknown. The heterogeneity of causes in DoC is the source of some expected variability in care and treatment of patients, which necessitated the development of a common nomenclature and set of data elements for meaningful measurement across studies. Guideline adherence in hemorrhagic stroke and severe traumatic brain injury may also be variable due to moderate or low levels of evidence for many recommendations. This article outlines the process of the development of common data elements for hospital course, confounders, and medications to streamline definitions and variables to collect for clinical studies of DoC.

SUMMARY: We estimate the b-value parameter of the Gutenberg–Richter law for earthquake magnitudes in the early stage of the Costa Marchigiana (Italy) seismic sequence, starting on 2022 November 9, with an ML 5.7 event in the Adriatic sea. In particular, we estimate both the completeness magnitude Mc and the b-value within the first 4 and 7 d after the initial strong event in the sequence. Our work represents a practical example of b-value estimation in 'true' real time, that is, during the seismic sequence, and its possible interpretation in terms of short-term forecasting. We highlight some critical issues to consider both in estimating/intepreting the b-value, and in evaluating the real time estimation of Mc. These issues are mainly due to the fact that preliminary catalogues available in real time are quite different from the revised ones, which are usually delivered after a few months. The criticalities are linked to the raw data recorded at an early-stage, an unreliable evaluation of the Mc with statistical approaches, the Short Term Aftershock Incompleteness entailed after the initial strong event, and the magnitude binning. Our results show that real time estimation of the b-value can give insights into the evolution of an ongoing seismic sequence, when attention is paid to data quality and quantity. Abstract

The only classical jurisprudential text to have come down to us, in its entirety, without the mediation and filter of the Justinian Digest, Gaius's commentaries from the famous Codex Veronensis no. 13 - commonly referred to as institutiones, but perhaps not by their author - present such characters and writing techniques as to be recognised as an isagogical text that the jurist-teacher must have composed (around the middle of the 2nd century AD, reigning Antoninus Pius) as a teaching aid intended to circulate exclusively among the circle of his students. The peculiarities of the compositional strategy suggest an original and direct Gaian authorship, freeing the work from a consolidated consideration as a remake of an older model and, on the other hand, enrich the evaluation of the text in the background of the relationships with pre-existing traditions or individual initiatives of transmission of legal knowledge.

Abstract

Smart well completion technology for sand management is being used more and more in the petroleum industry to increase productivity and cumulative hydrocarbon production over that of classical sand control techniques. While an understanding of the geomechanics aspects of sand production has begun to emerge, predicting and optimising two-phase oil-sand flow performance characteristics in horizontal wellbores remains a challenge. This theoretical study analysed two-phase, oil-sand suspended flow in a horizontal well by developing a new phenomenological model to predict lift velocity and pressure drop profiles, which are key parameters for designing optimal deployment of horizontal wells in an unconsolidated reservoir. Computations of average pressure drop for two-phase oil-sand flow in a horizontal well are in reasonable agreement with values predicted by a previous model for a relatively wide range of operating conditions. However, the new model eliminates the need for empiricism in predicting the wellbore hydraulics for oil-sand multiphase flow in horizontal wells and is applicable to different wellbore geometries. The proposed computational methodology has been applied to a hypothetical case study to demonstrate its field applicability. Les techniques de complétions intelligentes de puits avec gestion de venues de sable sont de plus en plus utilisées dans l’industrie pétrolière. Comparées aux techniques classiques de gestion de venues de sable, elles améliorent la productivité et la production cumulée d’hydrocarbures. Cependant, alors que les aspects géomécaniques de la production de sable sont de mieux en mieux appréhendés, la prévision et l’optimisation des écoulements diphasiques huile-sable dans les puits horizontaux posent toujours problème. Dans cette étude, une analyse théorique de l’écoulement d’un mélange huile-sable en suspension dans un puits horizontal a été effectuée. Pour ce faire, des modèles phénoménologiques ont été développés pour prédire la vitesse de remontée optimale ainsi que les profils de perte de charge, qui sont les deux paramètres clés pour optimiser la conception d’un puits horizontal dans un réservoir non consolidé. Le calcul de la perte de charge moyenne pour un écoulement diphasique huile-sable dans un puits horizontal est en accord avec les valeurs prédites par un modèle précédent, même pour des conditions d’opération variées. Cependant, le nouveau modèle évite de recourir à l’empirisme pour prévoir le comportement du puits dans le cas d’un écoulement multiphasique. Il peut également être appliqué à différentes géométries de puits. La méthode de calcul proposée a été testée sur une étude de cas hypothétique, afin de démontrer son applicabilité sur le terrain.

Abstract

We describe the main structure and outcomes of the new probabilistic seismic hazard model for Italy, MPS19 [Modello di Pericolosità Sismica, 2019]. Besides to outline the probabilistic framework adopted, the multitude of new data that have been made available after the preparation of the previous MPS04, and the set of earthquake rate and ground motion models used, we give particular emphasis to the main novelties of the modeling and the MPS19 outcomes. Specifically, we (i) introduce a novel approach to estimate and to visualize the epistemic uncertainty over the whole country; (ii) assign weights to each model components (earthquake rate and ground motion models) according to a quantitative testing phase and structured experts’ elicitation sessions; (iii) test (retrospectively) the MPS19 outcomes with the horizontal peak ground acceleration observed in the last decades, and the macroseismic intensities of the last centuries; (iv) introduce a pioneering approach to build MPS19_cluster, which accounts for the effect of earthquakes that have been removed by declustering. Finally, to make the interpretation of MPS19 outcomes easier for a wide range of possible stakeholders, we represent the final result also in terms of probability to exceed 0.15 g in 50 years., peer-reviewed

Abstract

In this paper, we carry out a comparison analysis of the Epidemic Type Aftershock Sequence (ETAS) model for the earthquake process, embedded with the three main exponential-type distributions adopted in practical applications to describe the magnitudes of seismic events, that are, the Gutenberg–Richter (GR), the tapered Gutenberg–Richter (TGR) and the CHaracteristic (CH) frequency–magnitude distributions (FMDs). The first law is a pure-power decreasing function, while both the other two introduce a more rapid decay in the tail of the distribution: a soft taper in the TGR model and a sharp cut-off in the CH one. To perform the comparison, we first investigate some theoretical features of the ETAS model with CH-distributed magnitudes (ETAS-CH), which have not been deeply analysed in the literature as much as for ETAS-TGR and ETAS-GR. In particular, we explicitly compute the branching ratio, we analyse its asymptotics in relation to its parameters, and we derive the proper stability conditions. We then move to the comparison among the three ETAS-GR, ETAS-TGR and ETAS-CH processes, to highlight differences and similarities. This is done by carrying out both a theoretical analysis, mainly focused on the three models' branching ratios and the relative sensitivity, and a simulation analysis of realistic synthetic catalogues to compare the processes' numbers, events' magnitude distribution and temporal evolution. The results we obtained show that the ETAS-TGR and ETAS-CH processes have very similar features. They both have also less restrictive non-explosion conditions than for ETAS-GR; in fact, differently from this latter case, their branching ratios exist for any value of the parameters and are lower than the one of ETAS-GR, to which they converge for large magnitudes. Si illustra l'importanza del ritrovamento e della trascrizione di un corposo manoscritto relativo alla 'Parte speciale' dell'opera 'Confronti testuali. Contributo alla dottrina delle interpolazioni giustinianee' di Lauro chiazzese. Il testo offre una ricchissima sinossi analitica di 1170 testi giuridici romani pervenuti in più versioni, delle quali almeno una all'interno del Corpus iuris; e costituisce non soltanto un documento storiografico di eccezionale valore per lo studio e la valutazione della stagione della critica interpolazionistica, ma anche, e soprattutto, un prezioso strumento di consultazione per l'esame capillare dei passi paralleli e una fonte di spunti critici originali ancora oggi utili per nuove ricerche in tema di critica testuale, di evoluzione del diritto privato nel Tardoantico e in età giustinianea, per le tecniche .compilatorie.
