El gen TP73 es un factor de transcripción que pertenece a la familia de p53. Este gen tiene 2 promotores, a partir de los cuales puede dar lugar a 2 isoformas, la isoforma TAp73, que contiene un dominio de transactivación, y la isoforma DNp73, que carece de este dominio. En este proyecto de tesis doctoral se plantea la hipótesis de que TAp73 es una diana terapéutica en glioblastoma. El objetivo general analiza el papel de TAp73 en Glioblastoma Stem Cells (GSC) e identifica y caracteriza posibles compuestos candidatos activos frente a GSC que modulen los niveles de TAp73. 75 p. [ES] El fuego es uno de los elementos ecológicos con mayor influencia sobre el desarrollo y evolución de muchos ecosistemas de la Cuenca Mediterránea. Sin embargo, el cambio climático y los cambios de usos del suelo han modificado los patrones espaciales del combustible y el riesgo de incendios forestales en esta región durante las últimas décadas, lo que puede causar modificaciones en la frecuencia, severidad, y extensión de los incendios forestales. Los cambios en los regímenes de incendios desencadenan importantes efectos sobre los ecosistemas, afectando principalmente a su composición, estructura, y funcionamiento y, por tanto, a su estabilidad, determinada a través de su resistencia y resiliencia. El principal objetivo de la presente Tesis Doctoral es la identificación de la resistencia y resiliencia de diferentes ecosistemas Mediterráneos propensos al fuego de la Península Ibérica en relación con la severidad del fuego. Además, se pretende analizar la eficiencia de diferentes estrategias de restauración post-incendio aplicadas con el fin de recuperar los servicios ecosistémicos que estos ecosistemas proveen a la sociedad. Para lograr estos objetivos, se calculó, en cada zona de estudio, la severidad espectral del fuego utilizando imágenes Landsat 8 OLI inmediatamente anteriores y posteriores a los incendios. La severidad espectral fue validada en campo mediante la aplicación del índice CBI (Composite Burn Index), diferenciando cuatro categorías de severidad: no quemado, severidad baja, severidad moderada, y severidad alta. Con el fin de identificar la resistencia de diferentes ecosistemas forestales frente a la severidad del fuego se analizaron los cambios causados en diferentes propiedades del suelo (Artículo I). Para ello, se tomaron muestras de suelo inmediatamente después del incendio en aulagares, brezales, y robledales para el análisis de propiedades físicas (diámetro medio ponderado de los agregados (DMP)), químicas (pH; carbono total; carbono orgánico total; carbono inorgánico total; nitrógeno total; fósforo disponible; cationes intercambiables Na+, K+, Mg2+, y Ca2+; y capacidad de intercambio catiónico (CIC)), y bioquímicas (actividades enzimáticas β-glucosidasa, ureasa, y fosfatasa ácida). Posteriormente, se calculó un índice de resistencia para cada propiedad del suelo analizada. Se observó que el diámetro medio ponderado de los agregados del suelo fue más resistente en el ecosistema de aulagar, pese a que esta propiedad se redujo con la severidad alta en los tres ecosistemas estudiados. Respecto a las propiedades químicas, su resistencia fue mayor en el ecosistema de robledal, siendo el carbono total, el carbono orgánico total, y el Na+ intercambiable las propiedades químicas más resistentes al cambio. Sin embargo, el suelo redujo su actividad enzimática con el aumento de la severidad del fuego en todos los ecosistemas estudiados. Así pues, y debido a la baja resistencia de las propiedades bioquímicas del suelo, las actividades enzimáticas podrían considerarse como indicadores potenciales de severidad en ecosistemas forestales recién quemados. Para estudiar la resiliencia se analizaron los efectos de la severidad del fuego sobre la capacidad de regeneración natural de la vegetación a través del estudio de los rasgos funcionales de las plantas. Esto se evaluó en zonas con diferentes condiciones climáticas y composición de especies: una zona con clima más frío y húmedo, dominada por ecosistemas de aulagar, brezal, piornal, y robledal, y otra zona más cálida y seca, dominada por pinares (Artículo II). Para ello se tomó el porcentaje de cobertura de las diferentes especies leñosas presentes al año y a los dos años del fuego, las cuales se clasificaron según rasgos fisiológicos (área foliar específica y capacidad de fijación de N2) y regenerativos (estrategia reproductiva, localización del banco de yemas, y germinación por estimulación térmica). En la zona de estudio más fría y húmeda la cobertura vegetal mostró una tendencia general de aumento en zonas de severidad alta respecto a zonas quemadas con severidad baja y moderada. A pesar de esto, las especies con área foliar específica alta, rebrotadoras, y germinadoras estimuladas por el calor respondieron mejor a la severidad del fuego. Sin embargo, en la zona más cálida y seca los efectos variaron entre las especies dependiendo de sus rasgos funcionales. En concreto, en esta zona se encontró una relación negativa entre la severidad del fuego y la cobertura de las plantas con área foliar específica baja y sin capacidad de estimulación térmica de la germinación y de fijación de N2. En cambio, las especies fijadoras de N2, con capacidad de rebrote, y con germinación estimulada por el calor aumentaron su cobertura con el incremento de la severidad. Los efectos de la severidad del fuego sobre la resiliencia de la comunidad vegetal fueron también evaluados mediante los cambios producidos en la estructura de la vegetación y en la composición de especies en diferentes ecosistemas: aulagares, brezales, piornales, y robledales (Artículo III). Para ello se determinó, a los dos años del incendio, el porcentaje de cobertura total de vegetación en cuatro estratos verticales (0 m - 0.5 m, 0.5 m – 1 m, 1 m – 4 m, y > 4 m). Además, en el estrato más bajo (0 - 0,5 m) se estimó la cobertura de cada especie leñosa y del total de la vegetación herbácea. La resiliencia de las zonas quemadas se identificó mediante las diferencias en la cobertura vegetal y en la composición de especies respecto a dos etapas de madurez diferentes: vegetación joven (no quemada en los últimos 10 años) y vieja (no quemada en los últimos 20 años). Se observó que el estrato inferior fue el más resiliente a corto plazo. En los aulagares y brezales esto fue debido principalmente a la alta regeneración de la vegetación herbácea, ya que ambos ecosistemas presentaron una baja resiliencia de la vegetación leñosa. En concreto, la resiliencia del estrato inferior fue mayor en los piornales y robledales, especialmente bajo severidades moderadas y altas. Sin embargo, el estrato más alto de estos ecosistemas se vio negativamente afectado por la severidad del fuego. En la presente Tesis Doctoral también se evaluó el efecto de la severidad sobre la multifuncionalidad del ecosistema (Artículo IV). El estudio se realizó un año después del incendio, empleando indicadores de diferentes funciones del ecosistema, las cuales permiten definir los servicios ecosistémicos: actividad fotosintética, fertilidad del suelo, ciclo de nutrientes, y calidad del suelo (servicio ecosistémico de soporte); producción de pastos para el ganado y producción de leña (servicio ecosistémico de aprovisionamiento); regulación climática y protección contra la erosión (servicio ecosistémico de regulación); y diversidad de especies leñosas y valor estético (servicio ecosistémico cultural). La severidad influyó negativamente sobre los servicios ecosistémicos de soporte, aprovisionamiento, y regulación, y sobre la multifuncionalidad del ecosistema. Finalmente, se estudió la eficiencia a medio plazo de diferentes estrategias de restauración post-incendio (acolchado de paja y restos de madera, y repoblaciones mediante subsolado y ahoyado) en la recuperación de la multifuncionalidad del ecosistema (Artículo V). Se emplearon variables de suelo tomadas a los cuatro años del incendio para definir las funciones y servicios del ecosistema: fertilidad del suelo, ciclo de nutrientes, y calidad del suelo (servicio ecosistémico de soporte); y regulación climática, regulación del agua, y protección contra la erosión (servicio ecosistémico de regulación). Estas funciones y servicios se emplearon en el cálculo de la multifuncionalidad del ecosistema. Se observó que el acolchado de paja y los restos de madera favorecieron al servicio ecosistémico de regulación. El servicio ecosistémico de soporte no se vio significativamente afectado por las estrategias de restauración. El acolchado de paja y los restos leñosos, así como las repoblaciones mediante ahoyado aumentaron la multifuncionalidad del ecosistema respecto al método de subsolado. Los resultados de esta Tesis Doctoral ponen de manifiesto la importancia de conocer las características de los ecosistemas menos resistentes a la severidad del fuego, así como los rasgos funcionales de las plantas, y la composición y estructura de la vegetación que confieren una mayor resiliencia frente a los regímenes de incendios actuales en los ecosistemas Mediterráneos. Además, estudiar los efectos de los incendios severos desde una perspectiva multifuncional, y conocer las estrategias de restauración con mayores efectos positivos sobre la recuperación de las funciones y servicios que estos ecosistemas proveen a la sociedad, son herramientas de gran valor para la gestión de zonas quemadas.climática, regulación del agua, y protección contra la erosión (servicio ecosistémico de regulación). [EN] A large part of the production of tomato plants is grafted. Although it has recently been described that cell walls play an important role in tomato graft healing, the spatiotemporal dynamics of cell wall changes in this critical process remains largely unknown. The aim of this work was to immunolocalize changes in the major cell wall matrix components of autograft union tissues throughout the course of healing, from 1 to 20 days after grafting (DAG). Homogalacturonan was de novo synthetized and deposited in the cut edges, displaying the low methyl-esterified homogalacturonan a stronger labelling. Labelling of galactan side chains of rhamnogalacturonan increased until 8 DAG, although remarkably a set of cells at the graft union did not show labelling for this epitope. Changes in xylan immunolocalization were associated to the xylem vasculature development throughout, while those of xyloglucan revealed early synthesis at the cut edges. Arabinogalactan proteins increased up to 8 DAG and showed scion-rootstock asymmetry, with a higher extent in the scion. The combination of these changes appears to be related with the success of the autograft, specifically facilitating the adhesion phase between scion-rootstock tissues. This knowledge paves the way for improved grafting using methods that facilitate appropriate changes in the time and space dynamics of these cell wall compounds. 166 p. [ES] La oruga de la procesionaria del pino Thaumetopoea pityocampa (OPP) está considerada como la especie más devastadora que produce la defoliación de los bosques mediterráneos de coníferas. Durante los meses fríos del año, la forma larvaria de este lepidóptero forma unos bolsones de seda en la parte apical del árbol. Su actividad se desarrolla durante el periodo de oscuridad, momento en el que abandonan el bolsón para alimentarse de las acículas de los pinos. Mientras que la seda producida por el gusano de seda Bombyx mori es uno de los polímeros de proteínas de origen natural más estudiados, poco se conoce de la estructura, composición y características de la seda generada por la OPP. A lo largo de este trabajo se ha realizado un estudio de la seda de T. pityocampa a nivel estructural y de su composición de aminoácidos. Mediante visualización por microscopía electrónica de barrido (MEB) y de transmisión (MET) se ha comprobado que la seda de la procesionaria del pino está formada por dos haces paralelos de fibroína recubiertos y unidos mediante una proteína distinta, posiblemente sericina. Mediante una hidrólisis ácida de la seda y cromatografía líquida de alta resolución se ha comprobado que los aminoácidos más abundantes son glicina, serina, alanina y ácido aspártico. A partir de bolsones de procesionaria del pino se aislaron dos especies bacterianas con capacidad de biodegradación de seda: Pseudomonas aeruginosa IIVV-SD1 y Bacillus licheniformis IIVV-SD3. Se secuenciaron los genomas de ambos aislados y se analizó in sílico la presencia de proteasas localizadas extracelularmente, o asociadas a la pared celular, que pudieran estar implicadas en la biodegradación de seda. En el caso de P. aeruginosa se seleccionó la elastasa o pseudolisina, una metaloendopeptidasa extracelular o proteína LasB como una candidata con alta probabilidad de estar implicada en la biodegradación de seda. De manera similar y a partir del análisis del genoma de B. licheniformis, se seleccionó la subtilisina Carlsberg, una serín endopeptidasa, también con localización extracelular, como proteasa posiblemente implicada en la biodegradación de seda. Seguidamente se realizaron ensayos de degradación de seda con la elastasa porcina y subtilisina comerciales y se comprobó que ambas proteasas eran capaces de degradar seda in vitro, siendo la subtilisina de B. licheniformis la que exhibió una mayor tasa de degradación de la seda. En el genoma de P. aeruginosa IIVV-SD1 se localizó el gen lasB, que codifica para la elastasa LasB, y se realizó un ensayo de sobreexpresión heteróloga en la cepa de E. coli BL21(DE3) para evaluar su papel en la degradación de seda de procesionaria del pino. La sobreexpresión de la proteína LasB a partir de la clonación del gen lasB en el vector de expresión pET SUMO y su posterior purificación por cromatografía de afinidad permitió observar degradación de seda por parte de la proteína purificada. Del mismo modo, se localizó en el genoma de B. licheniformis IIVV-SD3 el gen subC que codifica para la proteína subtilisina Carlsberg y se clonó en el plásmido pHY300PLK para la sobreexpresión homóloga de la proteína de B. licheniformis IIVVSD3. Por electroporación se obtuvieron dos transformantes, nombrados B1 y B2, y se realizaron ensayos de degradación de seda con ambos transformantes y en paralelo con la cepa silvestre B. licheniformis IIVV-SD3. De este modo se comprobó que los transformantes eran capaces de degradar seda con una mayor velocidad y eficiencia que la cepa silvestre. Para comprobar el número de copias del gen subC presentes en los transformantes B1 y B2 se realizó una PCR cuantitativa del gen subC, que permitió comprobar que los transformantes contenían 7 veces más copias del gen subC que el tipo silvestre B. licheniformis IIVV-SD3. De esta manera se demostró de forma inequívoca la participación de la elastasa LasB de P. aeruginosa IIVV-SD1 y la subtilisina SubC de B. licheniformis IIVV-SD3 en la degradación de seda de procesionaria del pino. Por último, se analizó la capacidad antifúngica de las cepas aisladas frente al hongo Fusarium circinatum, causante de una de las enfermedades más importantes en el género Pinus, con el fin de aumentar el valor de los aislados como posibles agentes de control biológico frente a enfermedades del pino. Aunque en un primer enfrentamiento entre B. licheniformis y F. circinatum la bacteria mostró cierta actividad antifúngica, los resultados no fueron significativos en posteriores ensayos. Sin embargo, P. aeruginosa resultó tener gran actividad antifúngica frente a F. circinatum pudiendo inhibir su crecimiento, a los 7 días, un 51,50% respecto al crecimiento del hongo control. Los resultados obtenidos en la presente Tesis Doctoral han permitido dilucidar la estructura y composición de la seda de la procesionaria del pino, así como el aislamiento de microorganismos cuyas proteasas están implicadas en la biodegradación de los materiales de seda. Se trata de un hallazgo que podría dar lugar a posibles aplicaciones para el control de esta plaga y tal vez tener importancia desde un punto de vista sanitario y biotecnológico.

29 páginas, figuras [ES] Los incendios forestales suponen un gran problema ambiental, ya que cada vez son más grandes y virulentos, por eso es tan importante aplicar medidas de prevención. En este estudio se comparan dos métodos preventivos para la reducción de combustible forestal: la quema controlada y el desbroce. El estudio se ha realizado en un matorral de alta montaña dominado por Calluna vulgaris, en una zona situada al norte de la provincia de León con gran recurrencia de incendios forestales, en tres parcelas por tratamiento. Se estudian las variables de riqueza y cobertura de herbáceas y riqueza, cobertura y altura de las especies leñosas, además, de la cobertura de suelo descubierto. Los resultados indican que, con la quema prescrita, el estrato herbáceo es el que mejor se ha recuperado, junto con una pequeña cobertura de suelo descubierto. Con respecto a las especies leñosas, no se encontraron diferencias entre los tratamientos de quema y desbroce, pero sí se mostró que los tratamientos afectaron negativamente a su regeneración [EN] Forest fires represent a major environmental problem, as they are becoming larger and more virulent, and that is why it is so important to apply preventive measures. In this study, two different preventive methods for forest fuel reduction are being compared: controlled burning and clearing. The study was carried out in a high mountain scrubland dominated by Calluna vulgaris, located in the northern area of the province of León with a high recurrence of forest fires, in three plots per treatment. The variables of herbaceous richness and cover, richness, cover and height of woody species, as well as bare ground cover, were studied. The results indicate that, with prescribed burning, the herbaceous stratum is the one that has recovered the best, with a lower cover in bare ground. Regarding woody species, no differences were found between the burning and clearing treatments, but it was shown that the treatments had a negative effect on their regeneration

35 páginas, figuras y tablas [ES] Se realizó el proceso termoquímico de torrefacción, una pirólisis lenta, con biomasa lignocelulósica de Populus nigra variedad I214 llevada a 240oC, 260oC y 280oC. Las muestras provienen de parcelas fertilizadas en función de las necesidades de nitrógeno de la plantación, donde se aplicaron 3 tratamientos: testigo o control, una fertilización con lodo líquido del tanque de una depuradora de una industria alimentaria sometida a digestión anaerobia y una fertilización con digerido procedente de un proceso aerobio-anaerobio-aerobio de estiércol de la planta experimental del Instituto de Recursos Naturales de la Universidad de León. Se hizo un análisis inmediato, un análisis elemental y el poder calorífico de las muestras, así como una comparación del análisis termogravimétrico entre los tratamientos a la misma temperatura, de un mismo tratamiento a distintas temperaturas y con muestras de otros estudios. Tras el análisis termogravimétrico donde la pérdida de masa era provocada por la evaporación de humedad y volátiles; y de la descomposición de hemicelulosa, celulosa y lignina; se determinó que la mejor muestra para la torrefacción es la fertilizada con lodo. [EN] The thermochemical roasting process was carried out, a slow pyrolysis, with lignocellulosic biomass of Populus nigra variety I214 brought to 240oC, 260oC and 280oC. The samples come from plots fertilized according to the nitrogen needs of the plantation, where 3 treatments were applied: control, fertilization with liquid sludge from the tank of a food industry treatment plant subjected to anaerobic digestion and fertilization with digestate. from an aerobic-anaerobic-aerobic process of manure from the experimental plant of the Institute of Natural Resources of the University of León. An immediate analysis, an elemental analysis and the calorific value of the samples were made, as well as a comparison of the thermogravimetric analysis between the treatments at the same temperature, in the same treatment at different temperatures and with samples from other studies. After the thermogravimetric analysis where the mass lose was caused by the evaporation of moisture and volatiles; and from the decomposition of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin; it was determined that the best sample to roast was the fertilized with sludge.

29 páginas, figuras y gráficos [ES] La problemática de residuos es uno de los principales desafíos de la sociedad actual. El sector textil contribuye notablemente de forma negativa. Este hecho es debido a que actualmente su aprovechamiento está pasando a segundo plano en detrimento de los más baratos tejidos sintéticos. Por ello, los ganaderos se centran en obtener leche o carne de sus explotaciones, mientras que la lana termina como un producto residual. Este trabajo trata los residuos procedentes de la lana de oveja y carnero. Para poder obtener un beneficio y evitar seguir contribuyendo a la generación de residuos, proponemos una recuperación energética a partir de estos desechos, contribuyendo a la economía circular a través de un proceso renovable y prometedor. El objetivo principal de este trabajo fue el de estudiar el comportamiento térmico de la lana para su aprovechamiento térmico en calderas de combustión y pirólisis. A través de una serie de análisis y tratamientos en laboratorio, obtuvimos datos específicos para oveja y carnero que derivaron en el posterior estudio termogravimétrico y cálculo de índices térmicos para cada muestra. Los resultados indicaron las buenas propiedades combustibles de las muestras analizadas, así como revelaron una mayor estabilidad térmica para la combustión de la lana de oveja y materia desprendida en el pico más representativo (31,660%/min) en relación al mismo valor del carnero (15,420 %/min). De la misma forma, para el proceso térmico de pirólisis, no existieron diferencias apreciables entre ambos tipos de lana. [EN] The waste problem is one of the main challenges of today's society. The textile sector contributes notably in a negative way. This fact is due to the fact that currently its use is passing into the background to the detriment of the cheapest synthetic fabrics. For this reason, farmers focus on obtaining milk or meat from their farms, while wool ends up as a residual product. This work deals with waste from sheep and ram wool. In order to obtain a benefit and avoid continuing to contribute to the generation of waste, we propose an energy recovery from this waste, contributing to the circular economy through a renewable and promising process. The main objective of this work was to study the thermal behaviour of wool for its thermal use in combustion and pyrolysis boilers. Through a series of laboratory analysis and treatments, we obtained specific data for sheep and ram that led to the subsequent thermogravimetric study and thermal indexes estimation. The results indicated the good combustible properties of the analysed samples, as well as revealed a greater thermal stability for the combustion of the sheep's wool and matter released in the most representative peak (31,660%/min) in relation to the same value of the ram (15,420 %/min). In the same way, for the thermal pyrolysis process, there were no appreciable differences between both types of wool.

Estas poseen una elevada concentración de nutrientes que hay que controlar para que no provoquen futuros problemas en el medio ambiente e incluso en la salud humana. Con la idea de asegurar la calidad del agua surge la necesidad de una recuperación de nutrientes, como son el nitrógeno y el fósforo, para un futuro aprovechamiento dando un paso hacia la economía circular. En este trabajo se exponen distintos métodos que permiten la eliminación y recuperación de los nutrientes, así como ejemplos de plantas de tratamiento de aguas que los implementan y futuros proyectos que se están estudiando. Viendo que en España se centra principalmente en la recuperación de fósforo para su posterior utilización en la agricultura. [EN] Population growth is translated into an increase in generation of wastes such as wastewater. They are mainly composed of high quantity of nutrients that need to be properly treated before its environment disposal to avoid future environmental or human health risks. Therefore, nitrogen and phosphorus recovery methods have recently drawn much attention in order to move towards a sustainable model based on the Circular Economy. In this work, several nutrients recovery and removal technologies are presented, as well as future projects and examples of real plants that are currently in operation. Current trends in Spain, are mainly focused in phosphorous recovery to be used as fertiliser in agriculture applications.

[ES] En este trabajo se lleva a cabo una valoración de empresas utilizando técnicas de análisis fundamental con el objeto de poder emitir una recomendación de inversión. Tras un marco teórico basado fundamentalmente en los trabajos de Damodaran (2017) y Fernández (2008), se aborda como caso práctico la valoración de Netflix. Se examinan los fundamentos económicos y financieros de la empresa, y se utiliza el método de descuento de Free Cash Flow para determinar el valor de Netflix. Tras obtener el valor intrínseco de Netflix y compararlo con el precio de mercado se concluye que la acción de la compañía está sobrevalorada, lo suficiente, según los estándares fijados, como para recomendar su venta. [EN] In this paper, a valuation of companies is carried out using fundamental analysis techniques to be able to issue an investment recommendation. After a theoretical framework based primarily on the works of Damodaran (2017) and Fernandez (2008), the valuation of Netflix is addressed as a case study. The economic and financial fundamentals of the company are examined, and the Free Cash Flow discount method is used to determine the value of Netflix. After obtaining the intrinsic value of Netflix and comparing it with the market price, it is concluded that the company's stock is overvalued, enough, according to the standards set, to recommend its sale.

24 páginas, figuras y tablas [ES] En este trabajo se analiza la eficacia de la aplicación de biochar en el crecimiento de planta forestal, de Pinus pinaster. Para el experimento, se utilizó biochar procedente de vid el cual se mezcló homogéneamente con el suelo. Se prepararon cuatro tratamientos, combinando dosis altas y bajas de biochar con aplicación en tamaño de partícula fina y gruesa, más un control en el que solo se añadió suelo. En cada alveolo se sembraron dos semillas de pino, 60 en total. A los 3 meses, en cada plántula, se midieron las siguientes variables: número de semillas germinadas, longitud aérea y radicular, biomasa seca total, aérea y radicular y diámetro del tallo. También se calcularon los siguientes índices para conocer la calidad de la planta: índice de esbeltez, relación longitud aérea/longitud radicular, índice de proporcionalidad biométrica e índice de calidad de Dickson. Los resultados observados no son favorables para los tratamientos en los que se añadió biochar puesto que el control obtuvo mejores resultados, aunque no muestre diferencias significativas con los tratamientos. For instance, roots are vital for plant nutrient and water uptake, thus regulating net primary production and nutrient cycling (Freschet et al., 2021). In the last decade, the adoption and advancement of a functional trait approach has greatly improved our understanding of root ecology, evidenced by the recent increase of global syntheses on root trait research (e.g., Freschet et al., 2018; Bergmann et al., 2020; Carmona et al., 2021; Freschet et al., 2021). However, there are still gaps and controversy in our understanding of root trait–functioning relationships (Freschet et al., 2021). Roots display a wide diversity of morphologies and symbiotic associations (i.e., with mycorrhizal fungi and rhizobium), which has made it challenging to seek general patterns across the diverse taxa that inhabit different ecological conditions worldwide (Ma et al., 2018). 148 p. [ES] La presente tesis doctoral evalúa la posibilidad de utilizar agentes de control biológico autóctonos para combatir las enfermedades de la madera de la vid. En concreto, el uso de hongos del género "Trichoderma" frente a "Phaeoacremonium minimum", uno de los hongos pioneros de la enfermedad de la yesca y de la enfermedad de Petri. El principal problema a día de hoy es la falta de productos eficaces para combatir estas enfermedades. Esto es debido a la retirada de productos químicos del registro de productos fitosanitarios autorizados para combatir las plagas y enfermedades, motivado por una mayor preocupación por la salud del medio ambiente, del consumidor y de los productores. Las políticas europeas buscan el uso de soluciones ecológicas, sostenibles, adaptadas al cambio climático y respetuosas con la salud animal, humana y del medio ambiente. Sin embargo, hay una falta de consistencia de productos biológicos comerciales y un limitado número de productos químicos que, además, pueden provocar el desarrollo de resistencias en los patógenos. Por tanto, el principal objetivo de esta tesis es buscar soluciones basadas en el agente de biocontrol autóctono "Trichoderma" spp. adaptado a las condiciones de viñedos de la región de Castilla y León. En esta tesis se muestra que el aislado "Trichoderma" sp. T154 fue seleccionado y caracterizado como un agente de biocontrol que está adaptado a las condiciones de esta región y con capacidad de biocontrol frente a "Phaeoacremonium minimum". Además, este microorganismo fue capaz de colonizar las heridas de poda en condiciones de cambio climático y su aplicación fue optimizada con respecto al criterio de salud "One health". Inicialmente, se realizó una prospección de viñedos de Castilla y León. Se utilizó un nuevo método para aislar cepas de "Trichoderma" spp. a partir de corteza de la planta de vid. Se confirmó cómo un menor número de tratamientos fungicidas por campaña y una mayor edad de las plantas de vid favorecen las poblaciones naturales de "Trichoderma", obteniéndose 25 aislamientos de "Trichoderma" de las 10 parcelas muestreadas. Se evaluó la capacidad antagonista de los citados aislamientos mediante ensayos de confrontación dual "in vitro" frente a "Phaeoacremonim minimum" Y038-05-3a, y se seleccionaron los aislados T75, T79, T84 y T154 por su alta capacidad de biocontrol. Seguidamente, el aislado T154 fue utilizado para evaluar los mecanismos de biocontrol que era capaz de utilizar frente al aislado de "Phaeoacremonium minimum" CBS 100398. Este "Trichoderma" autóctono fue transformado mediante la técnica de protoplastos con el fin de expresar la proteína roja tdTom, lo que pertimitió determinar que el micoparasitismo en condiciones "in vitro" y la exclusión de nicho en heridas de planta de vid de la variedad tempranillo fueron los principales mecanismos de biocontrol. Finalmente, la cepa T154 fue evaluada junto con otros aislados autóctonos de "Trichoderma" en distintas condiciones de temperatura, así como se cuantificó su persistencia sobre heridas de poda. Se comprobó que esta cepa era capaz de producir gran cantidad de esporas a 25ºC en condiciones "in vitro", se verificó que era capaz de colonizar las heridas de poda de plantas de vid de tempranillo en condiciones de semicampo durante el invierno, permanecer al menos 12 semanas viable protegiendo la planta, estar adaptado a condiciones simuladas de cambio climático y ser inoculado con criterios de respeto a la salud "One health". Por tanto, las implicaciones en un futuro inmediato de esta tesis son la aplicación de la cepa autóctona de "Trichoderma" sp. T154 en condiciones de campo estudiando su interacción con el resto de la microbiota natural y sus efectos sobre la producción. [EN] This doctoral thesis evaluates the possibility of using autochthonous biological control agents to face grapevine trunk diseases. In particular, the use of fungi from the genus "Trichoderma" against "Phaeoacremonium minimum", which is considered a pioneer fungus of esca and Petri diseases. Nowadays, the main problem is the lack of effective products against these diseases. This is due to the withdrawal of chemical products to reduce the pernicious effects of pests and diseases and it is motivated by a greater concern about environment, and health of consumers and farmers. European policies look for ecological and sustainable solutions, adapted to climate change and respectful to animal, human and environmental health. However, there is a lack of consistency of commercial biological products and a limited number of chemical ones that, in addition, can induce resistance to pathogens. Therefore, the main objective of this thesis is based on looking for solutions based on the use autochthonous biocontrol "Trichoderma" spp. agents adapted to the ecological niche of the vineyards from Castilla y León region. Here we show that the isolate "Trichoderma" sp. T154, selected and characterized as a biological control agent adapted to the ecological conditions of this region, which acts efficiently against "Phaeoacremonium minimum", being also able to colonize pruning wounds under climate change conditions. First, a survey of vineyards was carried out in Castilla y León. A new method was used to isolate "Trichoderma" strains from bark of grapevine plants. It was confirmed that the older grapevine plants are, the higher is the diversity of "Trichoderma" spp. isolates and also, a negative correlation was identified between the number of fungicides sprayed per campaign and the diversity of "Trichoderma" spp. isolates. Moreover, 25 isolates of "Trichoderma" were identified from the 10 sampled plots. The antagonistic capacity of these isolates was evaluated using "in vitro" confrontation dual assays against "Phaeoacremonium minimum" Y038-05-3a. The isolates T75, T79, T84 and T154 were selected by their high biocontrol activity. Subsequently, the isolate T154 was used for evaluating biocontrol mechanisms against the isolate "Phaeoacremonium minimum" CBS 100398. This autochthonous "Trichoderma" isolate was transformed using the protoplast procedure in order to express the red protein tdTom. Thus, mycoparasitism under "in vitro" conditions and niche exclusion in wounds of Vitis vinifera cv. Tempranillo were identified as main mechanisms of biocontrol performed by this biological control agent. Finally, "Trichoderma" strain T154 among others indigenous "Trichoderma" strains were evaluated at different temperature conditions and also were inoculated in pruning wounds to evaluate their capacity of colonization. This strain demonstrated a great production of spores at 25ºC under "in vitro" conditions. Moreover, "Trichoderma" strain T154 was able to significantly colonize pruning wounds of Vitis vinifera cv. Tempranillo under semi-field conditions during winter. Besides, this strain was able to remain at least 12 weeks pos inoculation in plant, adapted to simulated climate change conditions and inoculated based on One health approach. Future implications derived from this thesis should be the spraying of this autochthonous strain, "Trichoderma" sp. [ES] En el Antropoceno, explorar soluciones para la conservación de las plantas, el sustento de la vida en la tierra, frente a riesgos globales como las invasiones biológicas, debe ser una prioridad. La demanda creciente de nuevos enfoques de modelización de aplicación en gestión, conservación y evaluación de riesgos sobre la biodiversidad, se incrementó en los últimos años. La ciencia de la modelización debe avanzar en esta dirección, proporcionando recomendaciones que permitan responder a diferentes casuísticas, basadas en experiencias reales. El objetivo de esta Tesis es resolver preguntas importantes acerca de esta cuestión, utilizando enfoques de trabajo complementarios, que puedan extrapolarse a otras situaciones equivalentes. Como especies modelo estudiamos Paraserianthes lophantha (Fabaceae), una especie exótica invasora, pariente cercana de las acacias australianas, Acacia spp. y Quercus lusitanica (Fagaceae), especie amenazada y de interés para la conservación. En concreto, evaluamos el riesgo del potencial invasor de P. lophantha sobre Q. lusitanica de forma holística, utilizando como herramientas los modelos de distribución de especies, complementados con estudios experimentales de respuesta de las plántulas de ambas especies a la sequía, fase crítica del desarrollo. Los análisis se realizaron con registros de presencia localizados a partir de citas confiables confirmadas de las especies incluidas en bases de datos de referencia de plantas. Además, todos los registros de Galicia, se consultaron en su fuente original y se localizaron en campo para georreferenciar con precisión. Las variables ambientales utilizadas proceden de bases de datos relacionadas con el clima (WORLDCLIM, Atlas Climático de la Península Ibérica y CHELSA), usos del suelo (SIOSE), topografía o edafología. En algunos casos se generaron utilizando sistemas de información geográfica (ArcGis y Qgis). Exploramos (1) diferentes enfoques de modelización de la distribución de especies (SDMs) aplicables a la gestión de áreas pequeñas, analizando el potencial predictivo de modelos calibrados en diferentes escalas para dirigir las labores de gestión en áreas muy reducidas; (2) el potencial de los SDMs de especies exóticas, calibrados con datos de los rangos invadidos, comparando el potencial predictivo de SDMs de Paraserianthes lophantha calibrados con datos del rango nativo versus datos del rango invadido -comparando a su vez las predicciones de modelos calibrados a escala regional versus escala local; (3) introducimos en la modelización variables relacionadas con las posibles vías de introducción y dispersión de especies exóticas -datos de la cobertura del suelo; (4) evaluamos la posible interacción competitiva en condiciones de sequía de P. lophantha frente a Quercus lusitanica; (5) estudiamos la dinámica de nicho de P. lophantha entre varios rangos invadidos, para la elección de las áreas de calibración de los modelos predictivos así como para una mejor comprensión de las tolerancias de la especie; (6) evaluamos si el estudio multisitio de la dinámica de nicho entre el área de distribución nativa y más de un área de invasión puede contribuir a anticipar el potencial de expansión de las especies exóticas invasoras; (7) evaluamos si los resultados de un análisis de solapamiento de nicho a pequeña escala pueden ser utilizados para fines de conservación local; (8) proyectamos las distribuciones de P. lophantha y Q. lusitanica en escenarios climáticos futuros; (9) evaluamos la posible amenaza de P. lophantha sobre Q. lusitanica, obteniendo mapas de riesgo, combinando diferentes SDMs generados para ambas; (10) implementamos los resultados en el análisis de riesgos de P. lophantha a nivel europeo. El cálculo de modelos de distribución (SDMs) más precisos (calibrados con datos subóptimos), pero con variables de grano fino (25m) significativas, que expliquen su distribución en esas localidades (ej usos del suelo, orientación…) y la selección de la complejidad del modelo óptima, utilizando una evaluación cualitativa de los mismos, permitió una discriminación del espacio más adecuada para Paraserianthes lophantha y Quercus lusitanica que los SDMs calibrados con datos de los rangos de distribución completos, calibrados con variables de grano grueso (1Km) climáticas, lo que refuerza la utilidad de combinar enfoques locales y regionales para promover acciones de gestión local. Además, los SDMs de P. lophantha, calibrados en su rango invadido, fueron más útiles que los SDMs calibrados en su rango nativo, lo que demuestra que su uso como apoyo a la gestión debe aplicarse al menos con fines exploratorios. Esto permite incorporar variables significativas para la distribución de especies exóticas a pequeña escala -por ejemplo, los usos del suelo- o predecir la distribución de especies exóticas de las que se sospecha que han experimentado cambios en su nicho. Así mismo, encontramos que los SDMs calibrados a escala regional, utilizando variables de alta resolución, de enfoque local, son adecuados para mejorar las predicciones en áreas locales, al incluir información sobre un mayor número de datos de presencia y reducir el sobreajuste a los datos locales. Además, proporcionan una discriminación nítida de las zonas en las que deben centrarse las acciones de conservación a escala regional. Todos estos enfoques permitieron superar las limitaciones de evaluar y gestionar el riesgo local de una invasión biológica sobre una población disyunta. Nuestro estudio experimental no identificó, que ninguna de las especies superará competitivamente a la otra en las condiciones y etapa del desarrollo estudiadas. El efecto del estrés hídrico fue mayor en Q. lusitanica, que experimentó una gran reducción en sus potenciales hídricos y mortalidad al someterla al tratamiento de sequía. La exploración de la dinámica de nicho de P. lophantha mediante comparaciones multisitio, considerando diferentes áreas de invasión, mejoró la comprensión de la invasión, evitó infravalorar el potencial de expansión de P. lophantha a gran escala en Europa y probar que, utilizar datos tanto del rango nativo como del invadido es más adecuado para predecir el potencial de expansión de la especie. También, estudiamos el solapamiento de su nicho con el de la población de Quercus lusitanica a pequeña escala en Monte Pindo (A Coruña, Galicia, España), demostrando que P. lophantha es una colonizadora exitosa que puede amenazar seriamente este espacio natural. Este análisis también reforzó los resultados de los estudios predictivos anteriores que señalan que la gestión local para evitar la expansión de P. lophantha debe ser una preocupación para la conservación de Q. lusitanica. Los modelos predictivos de distribución de ambas especies a gran escala (Europa) permitieron corroborar que Paraserianthes lophantha tiene un notable potencial de expansión sobre las zonas costeras europeas de clima suave. Sin embargo, se espera que la expansión en los climas de la fachada Atlántica sea más conflictiva que en las costas del mar Mediterráneo. Respecto a Quercus lusitanica, prevemos que los efectos del cambio climático serán mucho más importantes y podrían comprometer seriamente la conservación de la especie. La combinación de los SDMs calibrados con los diferentes enfoques en esta tesis (escala regional y local) en modelos de riesgo, corroboraron la hipótesis de que P. lophantha podría suponer una amenaza para la conservación de Q. lusitanica al identificar las áreas con alto riesgo de invasión, en las que se podría producir el contacto entre ambas especies. Finalmente se realizó el análisis de riesgo siguiendo el análisis europeo para P. lophantha, aprovechando los resultados de los capítulos anteriores. Los trabajos de modelización de la distribución de especies permitieron aportar nueva información para responder a las cuestiones del modelo, aportando evidencias científicas relativas a la capacidad de establecimiento y expansión e impacto de la especie en el territorio europeo, incorporando también aspectos del cambio climático. [EN] In the Anthropocene, exploring solutions for the conservation of plants, the support of life on earth, in the face of global risks such as biological invasion, must be a priority. The growing demand for new modeling approaches for application in biodiversity management, conservation and risk assessment has increased in recent years. The science of modeling must advance in this direction, providing recommendations that can respond to different cases, based on real experience. The aim of this Thesis is to resolve important questions about this issue, using complementary approaches that can be extrapolated to other equivalent situations. As model species we studied Paraserianthes lophantha (Fabaceae), an invasive alien species, a close relative of the Australian acacias, Acacia spp. and Quercus lusitanica (Fagaceae), a threatened species of conservation concern. Specifically, we assessed the risk of the invasive potential of P. lophantha on Q. lusitanica holistically, using species distribution models as tools, complemented with experimental studies of the response of the seedlings of both species to drought, a critical stage in the plants development. The models were fitted with localized occurrence records from reliable confirmed citations of the species included in reference plant databases. In addition, all the records from Galicia were consulted in their original source, and located in the field for them to be more accurately georeferenced. The environmental variables come from databases related to climate (WORLDCLIM, Climatic Atlas of the Iberian Peninsula and CHELSA), land use (SIOSE), topography, pedology or hydrography. In some cases they were obtained using geographic information systems (ArcGis and Qgis). We explored (1) different species distribution modeling approaches (SDMs) applicable to small-area management, analyzing the predictive potential of models calibrated at different scales to direct management efforts in very small areas; (2) the potential of exotic species SDMs, calibrated with data from invaded ranges, comparing the predictive potential of SDMs of P. lophantha calibrated with native versus invaded range data - comparing in turn the predictions of models calibrated at regional versus local scales; (3) we introduce into the modeling variables related to the possible pathways of introduction and dispersal of exotic species - land cover data; (4) we evaluate the possible competitive interaction under drought conditions of P. lophantha versus Quercus lusitanica; (5) we study the niche dynamics of P. lophantha among various invaded ranges, for the choice of calibration areas for predictive models as well as for a better understanding of the species’ tolerance; (6) we evaluated whether the multisite study of niche dynamics between the native range and more than one invasion area can contribute to anticipate the expansion potential of invasive alien species; (7) we evaluate whether the results of a small-scale niche overlap analysis can be used for local conservation purposes; (8) we project the distributions of P. lophantha and Q. lusitanica in future climate scenarios; (9) we assessed the potential threat of P. lophantha on Q. lusitanica, obtaining risk maps, combining different SDMs generated for both; (10) we implemented the results in the risk analysis of P. lophantha at the European level. The most accurate species distribution models (SDMs), calibrated with suboptimal data, but with significant fine-grained variables (25m), which explain the distribution in those localities (e.g. land use, orientation...), and the selection of optimal model complexity, using a qualitative evaluation, allowed a more adequate spatial discrimination for Paraserianthes lophantha and Quercus lusitanica than the SDMs. The selection of the optimal model complexity, using a qualitative assessment, allowed a more adequate spatial discrimination for P. lophantha and Q. lusitanica than SDMs calibrated with full range data, calibrated with coarse-grained (1km) climatic variables, which reinforces the usefulness of combining local and regional approaches to promote local management actions. Furthermore, SDMs of P. lophantha, calibrated in its invaded range, were more useful than SDMs calibrated in its native range, demonstrating that their use to support management should be applied at least for exploratory purposes. This allows incorporating significant variables for the distribution of exotic species at small scales-for example, land uses-or predicting the distribution of exotic species suspected to have undergone niche changes. Likewise, we find that regionally calibrated SDMs, using high-resolution, locally focused variables, are suitable for improving predictions in local areas by including information on a larger number of occurrence data and reducing overfitting to local data. In addition, they provide a sharp discrimination of areas where conservation actions should be focused at a regional scale. All of these approaches overcame the limitations of assessing and managing the local risk of a biological invasion on a disjunct population. Our experimental study did not identify that either species would competitively outcompete the other under these conditions and stage of development. The effect of water stress was greater on Q. lusitanica, which experienced a large reduction in water potential and mortality when subjected to the drought treatment. Exploring the niche dynamics of P. lophantha through multi-site comparisons, considering different areas of invasion, improved the understanding of the invasion, avoided underestimating the potential for large- scale expansion of P. lophantha in Europe, and proved that using data from both native and invaded ranges is more adequate to predict the expansion potential of the species. Also, we studied the overlap of its niche with that of the small-scale Q. lusitanica population in Monte Pindo (A Coruña, Galicia, Spain), demonstrating that P. lophantha is a successful colonizer that can seriously threaten this natural area. This analysis also reinforced the results of previous predictive studies indicating that local management to prevent the expansion of P. lophantha should be a concern for the conservation of Q. lusitanica. Ensemble prediction models of the distribution of the two species on a large scale (Europe) corroborated that Paraserianthes lophantha has a remarkable potential for expansion over European coastal areas with a mild climate. However, the expansion in the climates of the Atlantic façade is expected to be more conflicting than on the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea. Regarding Quercus lusitanica, we anticipate that the effects of climate change will be much more important and could seriously compromise the conservation of the species. The combination of the SDMs calibrated with the different approaches in this thesis (regional and local scale) in risk models, corroborated the hypothesis that P. lophantha could pose a threat to the conservation of Q. lusitanica by identifying areas with a high risk of invasion, in which contact between both species could occur. Finally, the risk analysis was performed following the European analysis for Paraserianthes lophantha, using the results from the previous chapters. The species distribution modeling work provided new information to answer the questions of the model, providing scientific evidence regarding the species’ establishment and expansion capacity and impact the European territory, also incorporating aspects of climate change.

Single-layer centrifugation (SLC) with a low-density colloid is an efficient method for removing contaminating microorganisms from boar semen while recovering most spermatozoa from the original sample. This study tested the performance of this technique, using 50-ml tubes, by spiking commercial semen doses prepared without antibiotics with selected bacterial species followed by storage at 17 degrees C. The doses were spiked up to 102/ml CFU (colony forming units) of the bacteria Burkholderia ambifaria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus sim-ulans. The semen was processed by SLC (15 ml of sample and 15 ml of colloid) with the colloid Porcicoll at 20% (P20) and 30% (P30), with a spiked control (CTL) and an unspiked control (CTL0), analyzing microbiology and sperm quality on days 0, 3 and 7. SLC completely removed B. ambifaria and S. simulans, considerably reducing P. aeruginosa and overall contamination (especially P30, similar to 104 CFU/ml of total contamination on day 7, median). Sperm viability was lower in P20 and P30 samples at day 0, with higher cytoplasmic ROS. Still, results were similar in all groups on day 3 and reversed on day 7, indicating a protective effect of SLC (possibly directly by removal of damaged sperm and indirectly because of lower bacterial contamination). Sperm chromatin was affected by the treatment (lower DNA fragmentation and chromatin decondensation) and storage (higher overall condensation on day 7 as per chromomycin A3 and monobromobimane staining). In conclusion, SLC with low-density colloids can remove most bacteria in a controlled contamination design while potentially improving sperm quality and long-term storage at practical temperatures.

[EN] Snowfall in elevated areas of the mid-latitudes has a strong impact on infrastructure, freshwater availability, and the climate system. The Cantabrian Mountains of the northwestern Iberian Peninsula are very vulnerable to climate change because of their moderate altitudes, which limits their snowfall. Monitoring snow events is essential for the evaluation of weather and climate prediction models. However, measurement networks are scarce in mountainous areas and have great uncertainties because of blizzards. In this study, a multiphysics ensemble of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model was designed using three microphysics and two planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes to simulate nine snowfall events in the Cantabrian Mountains during autumn and winter 2021–2022. The WRF was validated using several snow characteristics, such as liquid water equivalent, snow cover, and snow depth. Liquid water equivalent was evaluated using snow-gauge networks and satellite products in an assessment of snow cover. In addition, a monitoring network of webcams and snow poles was implemented, improving the low density of snow observations in the mountains. The results showed good model performance for detection of snow cover and slight overestimation of liquid water equivalent and snow thickness, which may have been caused by under-catchment that is generally an effect of wind on the measurement systems and by snow compaction, respectively. Morrison microphysics and Mellor-Yamada-Nakanishi-Niino (MYNN PBL) yielded better results for liquid water equivalent at higher altitudes and output greater snow cover. The results help determine the best configurations for snow modelling in the study area to develop future studies of the spatiotemporal patterns of snow distribution. SI

[EN], In Southern Europe, the abandonment of the traditional transhumant system where sheep graze lowland areas during winter and distant mountain systems during summer has led to an important cultural loss and still poorly understood ecological consequences. We investigate the landscape-scale implications of contemporary sheep grazing patterns in a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS). Our analysis showed a heterogeneous use of mountain grazing areas between 1990 and 2020. The areas most used by sheep had more abundance of pasture, fewer forests, and structurally different landscapes than those that had been fully abandoned by sheep. Likewise, we have detected decreasing trends in landscape diversity in those areas not used by sheep over the study period, whereas landscape heterogeneity is maintained in those areas grazed by sheep. Our study constitutes an original analysis of landscape patterns and shifts in relation to extensive sheep grazing by using novel approaches that combine interviews, updated satellite time series, and state-of-the-art landscape analysis techniques. Likewise, our results constitute a benchmark as they inform on the importance of preserving extensive sheep grazing if we aim to maintain the cultural heritage, and traditional diverse landscape and the semi-natural grasslands in the Mountains of León. [EN] Grafting involves a sequence of modifications that may vary according to genotypes, grafting techniques and growing conditions. This process is often monitored using destructive methods, precluding the possibility of monitoring the entire process in the same grafted plant. The aim of this study was to test the effectiveness of two non-invasive methods—thermographic inference of transpiration and determination of chlorophyll quantum yields—for monitoring graft dynamics in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) autografts and to compare the results with other reliable measures: mechanical resistance parameters and xylem water potential. The mechanical resistance of grafted plants steadily increased from 6 days after grafting (DAG), 4.90 ± 0.57 N/mm, to reach values similar to non-grafted plants at 16 DAG, 8.40 ± 1.78 N/mm. Water potential showed an early decrease (from −0.34 ± 0.16 MPa in non-grafted plants to −0.88 ± 0.07 MPa at 2 DAG), recovering at 4 DAG to reach pre-grafting values at 12–16 DAG. Thermographic inference of transpiration dynamics displayed comparable changes. Monitoring maximum and effective quantum yield in functional grafts showed a comparable pattern: an initial decline, followed by recovery from 6 DAG onwards. Correlation analyses revealed a significant correlation between variation in temperature (thermographic monitoring of transpiration), water potential (r = 0.87; p = 0.02) and maximum tensile force (r = 0.75; p = 0.05). Additionally, we found a significant correlation between maximum quantum yield and some mechanical parameters. [EN] Determining the factors that pre-adapt plant species to successfully establish and spread outside of their native ranges constitutes a powerful approach with great potential for management. While this source-area approach accounts for the bias associated with species’ regions of origin, it has been only implemented in pools of species known to be established elsewhere. We argue that, in regions with well-known introduction histories, such as the Mediterranean Biome, the consideration of co-dominant non-introduced species as a control group allows a better understanding of the invasion process. For this purpose, we used occurrence data from GBIF and trait data from previous studies to find predictors of establishment and invasion. We compare the frequency, climatic niche and functional traits of 149 co-dominant plant species in their native region in southern Spain, considering whether they have colonised other Mediterranean-climate regions or not and their level of invasion. We found that large native ranges and diverse climatic niches were the best predictors of species establishment abroad. Moreover, coloniser species had longer bloom periods, higher growth rates and greater resource acquisition, whereas coloniser species becoming invasive had also greater reproductive height and nitrogen use efficiency. This framework has the potential to improve prediction models and management practices to prevent the harmful impacts from species in invaded communities. SI

[EN] The Iberian Peninsula comprises one of the largest boundaries between Mediterranean and Eurosiberian vegetation, known as sub-Mediterranean zone. This ecotone hosts many unique plant species and communities and constitutes the low-latitude (warm) margin of numerous central European species which co-occur with Mediterranean vegetation. Two of the main species found in this region are the Eurosiberian European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and the Mediterranean Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica Willd.). It remains unclear how the different physiological and adaptive strategies of these two species reflect their niche partitioning within a sub-Mediterranean community and to what extent phenotypic variation (intraspecific variability) is driving niche partitioning across Eurosiberian and Mediterranean species SI

[EN], Background Mediterranean ecosystems dominated by Pinus pinaster Ait. (maritime pine) are subject to a shift from fuel-limited to drought-driven fire regimes, characterized by an increasing wildfire extent, recurrence, and severity. Previous studies have not addressed the interacting effects of fire recurrence and severity on the ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) of maritime pine forests, although complex relationships between such fire regime attributes are expected. Here, we evaluated the medium-term effects of fire recurrence and severity on the EMF response of unmanaged, native pine ecosystems dominated by Pinus pinaster in the western Mediterranean Basin. We considered four key ecosystem functions computed from functional indicators (carbon regulation, decomposition, soil fertility, and plant production), which were pooled into an EMF construct. The fire regime effects on the trade-offs and synergies between the considered ecosystem functions were also analyzed. Results Multiple ecosystem functions responded differentially to fire recurrence and severity. Fire recurrence had a strong effect on soil fertility, decomposition, and plant production functions. No significant effects of fire severity on any of the individual functions were detected. However, both fire regime attributes interacted to determine soil fertility and decomposition functions, suggesting that their performance is only impaired by fire severity when fire recurrence is low. The differing responses to the fire regime attributes among ecosystem functions fostered a significant EMF response to fire severity and its interaction with fire recurrence, indicating that the effect of fire severity on EMF was stronger under low fire recurrence scenarios, even when relationships between individual functions and fire severity were weak. Fire recurrence caused significant trade-offs between functions to emerge. However, these trade-offs were not strong enough to differ significantly from the intrinsic trade-offs (i.e., regardless of the fire regime) of maritime pine ecosystems. Conclusions Our results indicated the need to use an integrative approach to assess the response of ecosystem functioning to the fire regime in maritime pine ecosystems. Adaptive management responses are necessary towards the minimization of repeated burnings and the reduction of the fuel load in unmanaged maritime pine stands of the western Mediterranean Basin with similar characteristics to those analyzed in this study. Estudios previos no han abordado los efectos interactivos de la recurrencia y severidad del fuego en la multifuncionalidad de los ecosistemas (EMF) en bosques de pino marítimo, aunque cabe esperar relaciones complejas entre estos atributos del regimen de fuego. En este trabajo, evaluamos los efectos a medio plazo de la recurrencia y severidad en la respuesta de la multifuncionalidad de los ecosistemas (EMF) de bosques nativos dominados por pino marítimo no gestionados en la cuenca Mediterránea occidental. Consideramos cuatro funciones clave calculadas a partir de indicadores funcionales (regulación del carbono, descomposición, fertilidad del suelo, y producción egetal) los cuales fueron agrupados en un constructo EMF. Los efectos del régimen de fuego sobre las sinergias y contrapartidas entre las funciones ecosistémicas también fueron analizados. Resultados Múltiples funciones ecosistémicas respondieron diferencialmente a la recurrencia y severidad. La recurrencia del fuego tuvo un efecto muy fuerte en la fertilidad del suelo, en la descomposición y en las funciones de producción. Ningún efecto significativo de la severidad del fuego fue detectado en ninguna de las funciones individuales. Sin embargo, los atributos de ambos regímenes de fuego interactuaron para determinar las funciones de fertilidad y descomposición, sugiriendo que su rendimiento es afectado por la severidad solo cuando la recurrencia del fuego es baja. Las diferentes respuestas a los atributos de los regímenes de fuego entre las funciones ecosistémicas promueven una respuesta significativa de la EMF a la severidad del fuego y su interacción con la recurrencia, indicando que el efecto de la severidad sobre la EMF fue más fuerte bajo escenarios de baja recurrencia, aun cuando las relaciones entre funciones individuales y la severidad fueran débiles. La recurrencia del fuego causó la aparición de ontrapartidas significativas entre funciones. Obviamente, estas contrapartidas no fueron lo suficientemente fuertes para diferir significativamente de aquellas intrínsecas (i.e., independientemente del régimen de fuego) en los ecosistemas de pino marítimo. Conclusiones Nuestros resultados indican la necesidad de usar una aproximación integrada para determinar la respuesta del funcionamiento al régimen de fuego en ecosistemas de pino marítimo. [EN], The wall-to-wall prediction of fuel structural characteristics conducive to high fire severity is essential to provide integrated insights for implementing pre-fire management strategies designed to mitigate the most harmful ecological effects of fire in fire-prone plant communities. Here, we evaluate the potential of high point cloud density LiDAR data from the Portuguese áGiLTerFoRus project to characterize pre-fire surface and canopy fuel structure and predict wildfire severity. The study area corresponds to a pilot LiDAR flight area of around 21,000 ha in central Portugal intersected by a mixed-severity wildfire that occurred one month after the LiDAR survey. Fire severity was assessed through the differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR) index computed from pre- and post-fire Sentinel-2A Level 2A scenes. In addition to continuous data, fire severity was also categorized (low or high) using appropriate dNBR thresholds for the plant communities in the study area. We computed several metrics related to the pre-fire distribution of surface and canopy fuels strata with a point cloud mean density of 10.9 m−2. The Random Forest (RF) algorithm was used to evaluate the capacity of the set of pre-fire LiDAR metrics to predict continuous and categorized fire severity. The accuracy of RF regression and classification model for continuous and categorized fire severity data, respectively, was remarkably high (pseudo-R2 = 0.57 and overall accuracy = 81%) considering that we only focused on variables related to fuel structure and loading. The pre-fire fuel metrics with the highest contribution to RF models were proxies for horizontal fuel continuity (fractional cover metric) and the distribution of fuel loads and canopy openness up to a 10 m height (density metrics), indicating increased fire severity with higher surface fuel load and higher horizontal and vertical fuel continuity. Results evidence that the technical specifications of LiDAR acquisitions framed within the áGiLTerFoRus project enable accurate fire severity predictions through point cloud data with high density. [EN] The forearm skeleton is composed of two bones: the radius and the ulna. This is closely related to manipulative movements. The ulna is part of the elbow joint, whereas the radius and ulna together with the scaphoid and lunate bones, form the wrist joints. Thus, morphofunctional analysis of the adult Sima de los Huesos (SH) forearm bones, provides clues about manipulative activities in one Pleistocene population. From 1976 to the present, over 7000 human fossils have been recovered from the SH site. The radial sample comprised 98 labeled fragments, of which 49 belonged to adult individuals, representing at least 7 individuals. The ulnar sample included 31 labeled adult fossils representing at least nine individuals. In this study, we describe the SH radii and ulnae and analyze their functional implications for manipulative and forearm movements. We confirmed that the SH radii are long and curved, with variations in robusticity and radial tuberosity orientation. The SH ulnae are characterized by an anteriorly oriented trochlear notch, a massive olecranon process, an obliquely oriented radial notch, a blunt and short supinator crest, a gracile and curved diaphysis, and a round and anteriorly oriented pronator crests. In general, they exhibit Neanderthal morphology. The SH collection provides a unique opportunity to conduct morphological analyses of these bones in the Middle Pleistocene population. [EN] The ratio between net photosynthetic rates and the foliar contents of essential plant macronutrients (N, P, K) is termed photosynthetic nutrient use efficiency (PNutUE). A universal trade-off exists whereby plants cannot maximize their PNutUE and their intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi, carbon gain per unit water spent) simultaneously, because any increase in intercellular CO2 concentration (ci) through a greater stomatal opening would increase PNutE but also enhances transpiration and therefore decreases WUEi. Rising temperatures associated with climate change can result in large decreases in WUEi in semiarid shrubs through photosynthetic machinery impairment and enhanced stomatal conductance and transpiration, but we know remarkably little about the influence of warming and drought on PNutUE and its interplay with WUEi in dryland vegetation. Using a 6-year (2011–2017) manipulative field experiment, we examined the effects of warming (2.5ºC, W), rainfall reduction (30%, RR), and their combination (W+RR) on the photosynthetic use efficiency of three essential nutrients (PNUE, PPUE and PKUE) and on WUEi in three shrub species growing at two semiarid shrublands for the years 2015–2017. Across species, warming (W and W+RR) reduced PNUE by 42.9%, PPUE by 43.8% and PKUE by 41.5% on average relative to shrubs growing under ambient temperatures, whereas RR did not significantly affect their PNutUE. These drastic reductions in PNutUE with warming were mainly driven by non-stomatal and largely non-nutritional decreases in net photosynthetic rates, which were almost halved in warmed shrubs. The photosynthetic use efficiencies of N, P and K were inversely related to foliar δ13C, a proxy for time integrated WUEi, in both ambient (control and RR) and warmed (W and W+RR) shrubs, but with significantly smaller slopes and intercepts for warmed shrubs. Thus, plants achieve a smaller gain in PNutUE for any given increase in stomatal conductance (and reduction in WUEi) under warmer climatic conditions. The strong negative impact of warming on PNutE, along with the warming-induced shift in the trade-off between PNutUE and WUEi, could be indicative of an increasing inability of native plants to cope with warmer conditions, with dire implications for dryland vegetation productivity and survival under climate change. [EN] Drought occurs naturally all over the world. Global warming has led an increase in the areas affected by this phenomenon. The study of drought involves the analysis of indicators and indices used to assess changes in the hydrological cycle of a region. A large number of indices developed for drought monitoring are based on meteorological and hydrological variables. This research has applied the Ombroxeric Index for the first time in California. It is based on the concept of ombroxericity: a condition of the territory characterised from an ombrothermic point of view, which can develop in relatively humid areas/zones, depending on the time scale of the study (i.e. monthly, seasonal or annual basis). Temperatures and precipitation from 180 meteorological stations have been considered for a period of observation from 1980 to 2016. In order to know the evolution of this index, a modified trend analysis based on the Mann-Kendall test and a modified Sen slope analysis were used. Empirical Bayesian Kriging was applied as an interpolation technique. Results are presented in both surface and contour maps. California showed a wide range of ombroxeric levels that went from upper strong dry in northern zones, to lower weak arid. Trend results showed an increase in bioclimatic drought throughout the whole State. In addition, summer showed the highest levels on the Ombroxeric Index. An increase in drought trends was observed at the seasonal level, being more pronounced in summer and spring. In both cases are increases in the central (+5 and +3.6 units year−1 respectively) and the southern (+4 and +4.5 units year−1 respectively) areas of the State. Increasing frequency and severity of droughts could have implications for the management of water resources and the survival of Californian vegetation types, such as conifers. SI

32 páginas, figuras, tablas [ES] Los sotos de castaño en El Bierzo (León) se encuentran actualmente en una situación de declive por problemas fitosanitarios entre otros, pues los artrópodos constituyen una parte fundamental en el equilibrio y correcto funcionamiento del ecosistema. El objetivo del trabajo es establecer los grupos funcionales de artrópodos que viven sobre el castaño en los sotos bercianos, para así tener una visión global de la biodiversidad funcional entomológica que hay en los sotos. Para ello se han realizado tres tipos de muestreo diferentes en ocho localidades bercianas: dos sobre la parte aérea de los castaños (observación directa y embolsamiento) y otro específico de castañas (recolección de erizos). Se han identificado las capturas a nivel de familia y se han asignado a grupos funcionales de alimentación, obteniéndose más de 54 familias diferentes agrupadas en 6 grupos funcionales: detritívoros, fitófagos, depredadores, parasitoides, micófagos y omnívoros. El método de muestreo embolsamiento es el que presentó mayores porcentajes de captura respecto a la observación directa. Además, se ha visto que la fecha de muestreo y la zona han influido en el porcentaje de grupos funcionales capturados. Por último, en el muestreo de erizos se encontraron castañas afectadas por las familias Tortricidae (15 %) y Curculionidae (4 %). [EN] The chestnut fields in El Bierzo (León) are currently in a state of decline due to phytosanitary problems, among others, since arthropods are a fundamental part of the balance and proper functioning of the ecosystem. The objective of the work is to establish the functional groups of arthropods that live on the chestnut tree in the fields of El Bierzo, in order to have a global vision of the entomological functional biodiversity that exists in the fields. To this end, three different types of sampling have been carried out in eight bercian localities: two on the aerial part of the chestnut trees (direct observation and bagging) and another specifically for chestnuts (harvesting of urchins). Catches have been identified at the family level and have been assigned to functional feeding groups, obtaining more than 54 different families grouped into 6 functional groups: detritivores, phytophagous, predators, parasitoids, mycophagous and omnivorous. The bagging sampling method is the one that presented the highest capture percentages compared to direct observation. In addition, it has been seen that the sampling date and the area have influenced the percentage of functional groups captured. Finally, in the urchin sampling, chestnuts affected by the families Tortricidae (15 %) and Curculionidae (4 %) were found.

Es por ello que el objetivo de este trabajo es realizar una revisión sobre la evolución de las medidas de restauración postincendio en ecosistemas forestales. Al mismo tiempo se tratará de analizar si ha existido una adaptación de estas medidas a los diferentes tipos de incendios que han aparecido a lo largo del tiempo. Para ello, se ha realizado una búsqueda de información en diferentes bases de datos, aplicando posteriormente unos criterios de inclusión-exclusión. A lo largo de los años, los estudios han ido evolucionado e incorporando nuevas técnicas para conocer el comportamiento del fuego y sus efectos. Así mismo, se ha determinado un cambio en las medidas de gestión post-incendio, que antiguamente se centraban en la reforestación y hoy en día en la protección del suelo. De los numerosos tratamientos que se utilizan para mitigar el efecto de la escorrentía y la erosión, parece observarse que el mulching es, a corto plazo, la técnica más efectiva. De igual manera, se destaca la importancia de la gestión pre-incendio como medida clave para controlar sus efectos. [EN] Forest fires have evolved over the years, reaching up to “6 generations of fires”, increasing their aggressiveness. For this reason, the aim of this work is to review the evolution of post-fire restoration measures in forest ecosystems. At the same time, we will try to analyze if there has been an adaptation of these measures to the different types of fires that have appeared over time. For this purpose, a search of information has been carried out in different databases, subsequently applying inclusion-exclusion criteria. Over the years, studies have evolved and incorporated new techniques to understand the behavior of fire and its effects. Likewise, a change in the post-fire management measures has been determined, which in the past focused on reforestation and nowadays on soil protection. Of the numerous treatments used to mitigate the effect of runoff and erosion, mulching appears to be the most effective technique in the short term. It also highlights the importance of pre-fire management as a key measure to control its effects.

Así, en este trabajo se estudia cómo han evolucionado dos de los genes implicados en la apoptosis en diversas especies de mamíferos mediante la realización de árboles filogenéticos, utilizando programas como MEGA7 o PHYLIP. Se comparan las filogenias obtenidas con los genes apoptóticos Bax y Bak1, con las del gen mitocondrial CytB, gen heredado de forma uniparental que servirá como modelo. Los genes apoptóticos presentan en algunos casos una topología algo diferente a la esperada. Aun así, esto permite realizar diversos estudios acerca de cómo han podido evolucionar estos genes en cada especie y analizar la relación entre su evolución y las funciones que realizan. [EN] Apoptosis is a programmed cell death process that is generally activated when cell injury occurs, but is also involved in other processes such as cell number homeostasis in tissues and organs and also in the formation of different anatomical structures during mammalian development. Thus, in this work we study how two of the genes involved in apoptosis have evolved in several mammalian species by means of phylogenetic trees, using programs such as MEGA7 or PHYLIP. The phylogenies obtained with the apoptotic genes Bax and Bak1 are compared with those of the mitochondrial gene CytB, a uniparentally inherited gene that will serve as a model. In some cases, the apoptotic genes present a topology somewhat different from that expected. Even so, this allows us to carry out various studies on how these genes may have evolved in each species and to analyze the relationship between their evolution and the functions they perform.

[ES] El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo mostrar los diferentes riesgos a los que están expuestos los trabajadores en las empresas que han adaptado la tecnología de la impresión 3D en sus procesos productivos. Para ello, este proyecto estudia la tecnología FDM o modelado por deposición fundida, se realiza un análisis de la evolución histórica, impacto económico a nivel mundial y la presencia en España. Finalmente, se idea una empresa que adapta la tecnología FDM a su proceso productivo para acabar con el análisis de los riesgos que conlleva la incorporación de esta tecnología. Básicamente, se expone el trabajo que debería realizar un Técnico Superior de Prevención de Riesgos Laborales a la hora de evaluar estos riesgos y buscar las soluciones adecuadas para afrontarlos desde el origen, siempre que sea posible. Para llevar a cabo la evaluación de este proyecto se ha utilizado método binario del Instituto Nacional de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo. This project investigates the Fusion Filament Fabrication (FFF) technology, the historical evolution and the global and Spanish economic impact. Then, a company that adapts FFF to its manufacturing process is designed, in order to study the risks involved in this incorporation. Basically, this project presents the work that a High Risk Occupational Technic have to do: evaluating these risks and seeking the appropriated solutions to solve them from the source whenever is possible. To carry out the evaluation of this project, the binary method of the National institute of Safety and Health at Work has been used.

El objetivo principal de la Tesis Doctoral fue evaluar a diversas escalas el potencial de técnicas de teledetección novedosas para monitorizar el estado de los ecosistemas y los impactos ecológicos de los grandes incendios forestales en los paisajes propensos al fuego de la Cuenca Mediterránea occidental, bajo diferentes escenarios de régimen de incendios. Según el autor, en conjunto, las técnicas de teledetección desarrolladas en esta Tesis Doctoral podrían ayudar a los gestores forestales a implementar políticas pre-incendio eficientes, dirigidas a reducir la carga de combustible y a modificar la disposición del mismo, particularmente en los ecosistemas más propensos a alta severidad del fuego. Los resultados de esta Tesis Doctoral también proporcionan el conocimiento científico y las necesidades operativas a corto plazo para identificar, en los ecosistemas menos resilientes, las áreas en las que son necesarias acciones de restauración para promover la regeneración de la vegetación y controlar procesos ambientales perjudiciales en el contexto del cambio global.

El término "gluten" incluye las proteínas de almacenamiento estrechamente relacionadas del trigo, centeno, cebada y avena. La importancia de estas proteínas formadoras de gluten radica en que juegan un papel fundamental en la elaboración de productos de panificación. En cuanto al etiquetado de los productos libres de gluten, tanto la normativa europea como el Codex Alimentarius declaran alimentos sin gluten aquellos que no contengan más de 20 mg de gluten por kg de alimento. Para cuantificar la cantidad de gluten existen diferentes métodos, pero los kits ELISA son los más efectivos y utilizados. Por ello, para nuestro estudio utilizamos un Kit Elisa-R5. Durante la realización de este trabajo, se llevaron a cabo varias encuestas a diferentes panaderías en la ciudad de León. Con los datos obtenidos de las encuestas observamos que los celíacos encuentran muchas dificultades a la hora de encontrar panes de buena calidad que no contengan gluten. En la ciudad de León existen, únicamente, dos establecimientos en los cuales se pueden adquirir estos productos además de los supermercados. Tras analizar en el laboratorio, concluimos que efectivamente el pan que se vende en Natural repostería, Mercadona y Alimerka es un pan libre de gluten, apto para el consumo de celíacos [EN] Celiac disease is defined as a multisystemic autoimmune-based pathology caused by gluten. The term "gluten" includes the closely related storage proteins of wheat, rye, barley and oats. The importance of these gluten-forming proteins lies in the fact that they play a fundamental role in the production of bakery products. Regarding the labelling of gluten-free products, both European regulations and Codex Alimentarius declare gluten-free foods that do not contain more than 20 mg of gluten per-kg of food. To quantify the amount of gluten there are different methods, but ELISA kits are the most effective and used. Therefore, for our study we use a Kit Elisa-R5. During this work, several surveys were carried out to different bakeries in the city of León. With the data obtained from the surveys we observed that celiacs encounter many difficulties when it comes to finding good quality bread that does not contain gluten. In the city of León there are only two establishments in which these products can be purchased in addition to supermarkets. We analyzed these breads and with the results obtained from the laboratory analysis, we concluded that effectively the bread sold in Natural pastries, Mercadona and Alimerka is a gluten-free bread, suitable for the consumption of celiacs

Los objetivos principales de este trabajo son esclarecer su definición, realizar un análisis bibliométrico y una revisión bibliográfica, así como aportar ejemplos de estudios para comprender mejor los avances en los últimos 25 años. En la búsqueda bibliométrica de las publicaciones que contienen los términos elegidos, siempre la palabra “biomedicine” es la que más veces aparece y el buscador científico “Google Scholar” el que aporta un mayor número de resultados. El número de publicaciones en las que aparecen todos los términos aumenta con los años, siendo 2008 el punto clave en el que el crecimiento empieza a ser mucho mayor. La biomimética se puede aplicar a numerosos ámbitos muy diversos, desde la zoología y ecología hasta la robótica y la arquitectura, creciendo actualmente en todos ellos. Como ejemplos destacados, este trabajo resume los vendajes basados en el gecko, un casco basado en la cabeza del pájaro carpintero o agujas que imitan la picadura indolora de un mosquito. La biomimética es un área que aún tiene muchas investigaciones abiertas, en las que es importante poner atención y esfuerzo, ya que puede dar resultados muy satisfactorios [EN] Biomimesis focuses on the enhancement of human life through the study and recreation of biological structures and their functions. The main objectives of this work are to clarify its definition, to carry out a bibliometric analysis and a bibliographic review, as well as to provide examples of studies to better understand the advances in the last 25 years. In the bibliometric search of the publications that contain the chosen terms, the word “biomedicine” is always the one that appears the most and the scientific search engine “Google Scholar” provides the highest number of results. The number of publications in which all the terms appear increases over the years, with 2008 being the key point in which the growth begins to be much greater. Biomimetics can be applied to many very diverse fields, from zoology and ecology to robotics and architecture, and is currently growing in all of them. As prominent examples, this work summarizes bandages based on the gecko, a helmet based on the head of the woodpecker, or needles that mimic the painless bite of a mosquito. 50 páginas, ilustraciones [ES] El objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar la vulnerabilidad y el riesgo de inundación en la localidad de Vegas del Condado debido a que es una zona con riesgo alto de inundación y se encuentra catalogado como Área con Riesgo Potencial Significativo de Inundación (ARPSI). Para el análisis, se realizó un trabajo de campo para la obtención de datos georreferenciados actualizados y se trabajó con un SIG. Mediante el análisis de sus datos descriptivos y espaciales, se elaboró una cartografía sobre la vulnerabilidad y el riesgo social, económico y total de la zona. Los resultados muestran que las zonas rurales más vulnerables resultaron ser zonas de huertos, pinares maderables, robledales y árboles de ribera. En cuanto a la población afectada, esta no llega al 1%. A nivel económico, en las zonas con elevada vulnerabilidad destacan dos ganaderías. Así mismo, el centro de salud de la localidad se vería afectado en avenidas con periodos de retorno de 100 y 500 años. La detección de todos estos riesgos permite proponer con tiempo medidas para reducir la vulnerabilidad y el riesgo de la población, creando sociedades resilientes [EN] The aim of this survey is to study the vulnerability and flood-risk in the area of Vegas del Condado, because it has a high risk of flooding and it is listed as area with Significant Potential Risk of Flooding (ARPSI). For the analysis, field work was carried out to obtain updated georeferenced data and a GIS was used. Through the analysis of its descriptive and spatial data, a cartography of the vulnerability and social, economic and total risk of the area was elaborated. The results show that the most vulnerable rural areas were orchards, pinewoods, oak groves and riverside trees. Regarding the affected population does not reach 1%. Economically, two livestock farms stand out in the areas with high vulnerability. Moreover, the local health centre would be affected by floods with return periods of 100 and 500 years. The detection of all these risks makes it possible to propose measures over time to reduce the vulnerability and risk of the population and creating resilient societies

La frecuencia y severidad de los fenómenos climáticos extremos como sequías e inundaciones no deja de crecer debido a aumentos en la temperatura media global y a cambios en los patrones de movimiento atmosférico. El objetivo de este trabajo es verificar la existencia de tendencias en el territorio español peninsular para la temperatura, precipitación e índice NAO, definido como la diferencia anómala entre el anticiclón de las Azores y la borrasca islandesa. Se busca analizar también cómo afecta la oscilación del Atlántico norte en las precipitaciones y la temperatura española en diferentes estaciones. Utilizando el programa de análisis estadístico Rstudio junto a datos de 67 estaciones meteorológicas con seguimiento durante al menos ochenta años, se realizaron cuatro tipos de pruebas capaces de analizar tendencias y establecer patrones relacionales entre distribuciones de datos. Una prueba K-S, una regresión lineal, la prueba de Mann-Kendall y una correlación de kendall. Se encontraron evidencias claras de la existencia de tendencias positivas en la temperatura durante todo el siglo pasado, afectando especialmente al interior de la peninsula y al litoral mediterráneo. En cuanto a la precipitación, se determinó que el cambio climático no afecta significativamente a los regímenes de precipitación a escala local, pero si lo hace de forma indirecta, modificando la oscilación del Atlántico norte de tal forma que los movimientos atmosféricos tiendan a dirigirse hacia Centroeuropa llevándose las nubes con ellos, disminuyendo la precipitación y aumentando la temperatura en la península [EN] Climate change is one of the biggest environmental problems we are currently facing as a society. The frequency and severity of extreme climatic phenomena such as droughts and floods is constantly increasing due to increases in global mean temperature and changes in atmospheric movements. The aim of this work is to verify the existence of trends in the Spanish peninsular territory in temperature, precipitation and NAO index, defined as the anomalous difference between the Azores anticyclone and the Icelandic cyclone , as well as to determine how the orth Atlantic oscillation affects Spanish precipitation and temperature in different seasons. Using the statistical analysis program Rstudio together with data from 67 meteorological stations tracked for at least eighty years, four types of tests capable of analyzing trends and establishing relational patterns between data distributions were performed. A K-S test, a linear regression, the Mann-Kendall test and a kendall correlation. Clear evidence was found for the existence of positive trends in temperature throughout the last century, especially affecting the interior of the peninsula and the Mediterranean coast. As for precipitation, it was determined that climate change does not significantly affect precipitation regimes on a local scale, but does so indirectly, modifying the North Atlantic oscillation in such a way that atmospheric movements tend to move towards Central Europe, taking clouds with them, decreasing precipitation and increasing temperature in the peninsula

30 páginas, ilustraciones [ES] En este trabajo se muestreó la dolina denominada Prado Veneiro, dentro del valle del río Luna (León), con el objetivo de conocer las condiciones atmosféricas a nivel sinóptico que favorecen la formación de Piscinas de Aire Frío (CAPs), una clase de inversión térmica muy localizada en el espacio y a veces persistente en el tiempo. Para ello, se realizó una comparación de las temperaturas mínimas y máximas entre la dolina y una ubicación ajena a estos fenómenos. Con los datos recogidos en campo, se realizó un Análisis de Componentes Principales (PCA) acompañado por un análisis clúster no jerárquico, así como un test de correlación de Pearson con diversas variables atmosféricas extraídas del Reanálisis ERA-5. Los resultados, además de arrojar registros nunca observados en los fondos de valle leoneses (-29,7ºC) indicaron la gran magnitud de las CAPs registradas en esta zona durante todo el año, llegando a superar los 20ºC de diferencia. Además, destacó la aparición de episodios de Piscinas de Aire Frío Permanentes (PCAPs) en los meses invernales, que se desarrollaron durante las horas centrales del día. Por último, se observó que las CAPs y PCAPs se encuentran correlacionadas con distintas variables atmosféricas, indicando la importancia de la presencia de nieve reciente para la formación de las segundas [EN] The Prado Veneiro sinkhole, within the Luna River valley (León), was researched aiming to understand the atmospheric conditions at synoptic scale that trigger the formation of Cold Air Pools (CAPs), a kind of thermal inversion which is strongly localized in space, but sometimes quite persistent in time. Thus, a comparison of the minimum and maximum temperatures between the sinkhole and a location external to these phenomena was carried out. Subsequently, after the field work was made, a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was carried out accompanied by a non-hierarchical cluster analysis, as well as a Pearson correlation test with various atmospheric variables extracted from the Reanalysis data from ERA-5. Results showed record-breaking temperatures never observed before in the low valleys of León (-29.7ºC), demonstrating the strength of the CAPs recorded in this area throughout the year, which reached differences of over 20ºC. In addition, the presence of Permanent Cold Air Pools (PCAPs) in the winter months, which developed during the midday, was highlighted. Ultimatelly, CAPs and PCAPs showed they were correlated with different atmospheric variables, suggesting the need of a recent snow base for a strong PCAP development

Es una enfermedad multifactorial y compleja en la que influyen el envejecimiento, factores genéticos y factores ambientales. La acción combinada de estos factores provoca múltiples alteraciones celulares que desembocan en la degeneración neuronal causando alteraciones en la función motora. Actualmente, sólo existen tratamientos paliativos. Esto se debe, al menos en parte, a que tradicionalmente el estudio y la búsqueda de tratamientos se ha basado en la utilización de modelos que logran, solo en cierta medida, recrear las características de la enfermedad de Parkinson. Por ello, mi hipótesis es que el desarrollo de nuevos modelos celulares que recapitulen fielmente los procesos fundamentales de la enfermedad de Parkinson es esencial para la búsqueda de nuevos fármacos efectivos contra este trastorno. Recientemente se han desarrollado cultivos en tres dimensiones, denominados organoides cerebrales, que dada su similitud morfológica y fisiológica al órgano in vivo, presentan un gran potencial como modelos del Parkinson. El objetivo general de este trabajo es realizar un estudio bibliográfico de los mecanismos patológicos de esta enfermedad y un análisis comparativo de los modelos que se han utilizado para su estudio [EN] Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. It is a multifactorial and complex disease influenced by aging, genetic and environmental factors. The combined action of these factors causes multiple cellular alterations that lead to neuronal degeneration causing alterations in motor function. Currently, there are only palliative treatments. This is due, at least in part, to the fact that traditionally the study and search for treatments has been based on the use of models that manage, only to a certain extent, to recreate the characteristics of Parkinson’s disease. Therefore, my hypothesis is that the development of new cellular models that accurately recapitulate the fundamental processes of Parkinson’s disease is essential for the search for new effective drugs against this disorder. Recently cultures in three dimensions, called cerebral organoids, have been developed, which given their morphological and physiological similarity to the organ in vivo, present a great potential as models of Parkinson’s. The general objective of this work is to carry out a bibliographic study of the pathological mechanisms of this disease and a comparative analysis of the models that have been used for its study

[EN] Large, severe wildfires can cause unpredictable changes in Mediterranean plant communities that undermine ecosystem resilience. Understanding the geophysical drivers shaping vegetation dynamics after fire is vital to provide integrated knowledge into plant community recovery feedbacks in the context of global change. We investigated the role of fire severity and a comprehensive set of geophysical drivers in the post-fire vegetation recovery of Mediterranean landscapes. We used physical-based remote sensing techniques to estimate vegetation recovery and examined whether this recovery is plant-community dependent in the short-term (one year) after the fire. The fractional vegetation cover (FCOVER) recovery was selected as a resilience indicator for Pinus sylvestris L. (Scots pine) forests, Quercus ilex L. (holm oak) woodlands, shrublands dominated by Cytisus oromediterraneus Rivas Mart. et al. (black broom) and grasslands. To obtain the pre- and post-fire FCOVER, we used the Gaussian processes regression algorithm trained with the PROSAIL-D radiative transfer model. The algorithm was parameterized to account for the variability of biophysical conditions in the plant communities considered and was applied to the Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery. Validation of remotely-sensed FCOVER with field data in burned and control plots was successful (R2 = 0.84 and RMSE = 10.83%), without significant under or overestimation. We selected 31 variables pertaining to fire severity, climate, post-fire soil moisture, pre-fire soil condition, and landscape configuration as putative predictors of FCOVER recovery percentage (FCOVER%rec), calculated as the ratio of post-fire to pre-fire FCOVER. Random Forest regression (RFR) was used to disentangle the influences of fire severity and geophysical drivers on community-specific FCOVER%rec. Fire severity and post-fire surface soil moisture variables were relevant predictors in RFR models in all plant communities. However, their importance was largely community-dependent. In grasslands, surface soil moisture in the early summer season one year after fire was the major variable explaining variability in FCOVER%rec. In holm oak woodlands, the contribution of fire severity and surface soil moisture was balanced. Conversely, fire severity largely outweighed other variables in driving FCOVER%rec in black broom shrublands and Scots pine forests. Pre-fire climate, soil condition and landscape configuration variables were not meaningful predictors in general. Our findings offer novel insights into the processes that underlie resilience in fire-prone plant communities located in the western Mediterranean Basin. This establishes a baseline to help prioritize adaptive management strategies for the most vulnerable areas in the region. [EN] Characterizing the fire regime in regions prone to extreme wildfire behavior is essential for providing comprehensive insights on potential ecosystem response to fire disturbance in the context of global change. We aimed to disentangle the linkage between contemporary damage-related attributes of wildfires as shaped by the environmental controls of fire behavior across mainland Portugal. We selected large wildfires (≥100 ha, n = 292) that occurred during the 2015–2018 period, covering the full spectrum of large fire-size variation. Ward's hierarchical clustering on principal components was used to identify homogeneous wildfire contexts at landscape scale on the basis of fire size, proportion of high fire severity, and fire severity variability, and their bottom-up (pre-fire fuel type fraction, topography) and top-down (fire weather) controls. Piecewise Structural Equation Modeling was used to disentangle the direct and indirect relationships between fire characteristics and fire behavior drivers. Cluster analysis evidenced severe and large wildfires in the central region of Portugal displaying consistent fire severity patterns. Thus, we found a positive relationship between fire size and proportion of high fire severity, which was mediated by distinct fire behavior drivers involving direct and indirect pathways. A high fraction of conifer forest within wildfire perimeters and extreme fire weather were primarily responsible for those interactions. In the context of global change, our results suggest that pre-fire fuel management should be targeted at expanding the fire weather settings in which fire control is feasible and promote less flammable and more resilient forest types. [EN] The obtention of wall-to-wall fire severity estimates through reliable remote sensing-based techniques that align with management needs is a critical factor in post-fire decision-making processes. In this paper, we novelty proposed a multi-date change detection framework based on the variation in fractional vegetation cover (FCOVER), with enough ecological sense and physical basis to be generalizable across different plant communities and burned landscapes with varying environmental conditions. This framework meets the definition of fire severity operationally used in the field as a biophysical indicator when fire effects on the understory and overstory layers are linked. The FCOVER was retrieved from Sentinel-2 surface reflectance scenes by inverting PROSAIL-D radiative transfer model (RTM) simulations using the random forest regression algorithm. FCOVER retrievals were validated in the field using burned and unburned control plots. We computed the FCOVERr metric as the ratio of post-fire to pre-fire FCOVER. We tested the relationship of the FCOVERr and the most common bi-temporal spectral indices in the literature, i.e. the differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR), the Relative dNBR (RdNBR) and the Relativized Burn Ratio (RBR), with the Composite Burn Index (CBI) measured in field plots for validation purposes in two case-study wildfires in the western Mediterranean Basin. We also calculated the transferability of FCOVERr and the spectral indices between different plant communities within each site, as well as between sites. The predictive errors of pre and post-fire FCOVER retrievals were found to be low (RMSE ≈ 10%) for the two study sites. Overall, the FCOVERr metric provided more accurate CBI estimations (R2 =0.87 ±0.04) than spectral indices (R2 = 0.71 ± 0.13). The CBI was linearly related with the FCOVERr metric for both sites, whereas the type of relationship with spectral indices was not consistent, which translated into better transferability performance of the FCOVERr metric (nRMSE = 14.27% ± 3.75%) than that of the spectral indices (nRMSE = 21.97% ± 8.09%), not only between different Mediterranean plant communities within sites, but also between the two sites. Spectral indices underestimated moderate to high fire severity to a greater extent than FCOVERr in the CBI field plots, and misclassified fire severity in several areas with patchiness fire effects identified in the field. The FCOVERr product proposed in this study may be a sound choice for the operational identification of priority areas for post-fire management. [EN] CONTEXT: Agricultural intensification contributes to global food security and well-being by supplying the food demand of a growing human population. However, ongoing land-use change and intensification seriously affect the abundance, diversity and distribution of species, besides many other impacts, thereby threatening the functioning of ecosystems worldwide. Despite the accumulating evidence that the current agricultural model is unsustainable, we are far from understanding the consequences of functional diversity loss for functioning and ecosystem service supply and the potential long-term threats to food security and human well-being. OBJECTIVE: In this review, we propose a conceptual framework to understand the relationships between functional diversity and human well-being that also considers agroecosystem health. To this end, we identify the most commonly assumed relationships linking functional diversity to regulating and provisioning agroecosystem services and their importance for human well-being, emphasising the most serious knowledge gaps in the in-dividual pathways of the conceptual framework. METHODS: A consortium formed by an international panel of experts from different disciplines including functional diversity, ecosystem services and human health compiled 275 articles. Members of the consortium proposed literature to exemplify each specific aspect of the conceptual framework in the text, in accordance with his/her field of expertise. The guideline for all experts was to focus mostly in current literature (38% of the references are from the last 5 years and 66% from the last decade), with special interest in reviews and synthesis articles (42% of the references), as well as meta-analyses and global studies (10% of the references). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The factors that influence agroecosystem health are extremely complex, involving both services and disservices related to land-use management and environmental conditions. The global human population needs sustainable and resilient agroecosystems and a concerted effort is needed to fundamentally redesign agricultural practices to feed the growing human population without further jeopardising the quality of life for future generations. We highlight the potential effects of land-use change and ecological intensification on the functional diversity of plant and animal communities, and the resulting consequences for ecosystem services and ultimately human health. SIGNIFICANCE: The resulting conceptual model is developed for researchers as well as policy makers high- lighting the need for a holistic approach to understand diversity impacts on human well-being. Finally, we document a major knowledge gap due to the lack of any studies focusing on the full pathway from diversity to human well-being. SI

Forest managers demand reliable and cost-efficient methodologies to implement forest resilience concepts in post-fire decision-making at different spatio-temporal scales. In this paper, we developed a generalizable remote sensing-based tool to measure disturbance impact and engineering resilience at short-term in forest ecosystems affected by wildland fires. The case study was a mixed-severity wildfire that burned several shrubland (dominated by gorse, broom and heath) and tree forest (dominated by oak and pine) ecosystems. Specifically, we retrieved fractional vegetation cover (FVC) over a time-series of pre and post-fire Deimos-2 imagery (spatial resolution of 4 m) from a radiative transfer model (RTM) hybrid inversion approach (Gaussian processes regression algorithm learned from a simulation dataset generated using the PROSAIL-D model). Pre and post-fire FVC retrieval was validated with field data stratified by dominant ecosystem. Abstract The fungus Trichoderma arundinaceum exhibits biological control activity against crop diseases caused by other fungi. Two mechanisms that likely contribute to this activity are upregulation of plant defenses and production of two types of antifungal secondary metabolites: the sesquiterpenoid harzianum A (HA) and the polyketide-derived aspinolides. The goal of the current study was to identify aspinolide biosynthetic genes as part of an effort to understand how these metabolites contribute to the biological control activity of T. arundinaceum. Comparative genomics identified two polyketide synthase genes (asp1 and asp2) that occur in T. arundinaceum and Aspergillus ochraceus, which also produces aspinolides. Gene deletion and biochemical analyses in T. arundinaceum indicated that both genes are required for aspinolide production: asp2 for formation of a 10-member lactone ring and asp1 for formation of a butenoyl subsituent at position 8 of the lactone ring. Gene expression and comparative genomics analyses indicated that asp1 and asp2 are located within a gene cluster that occurs in both T. arundinaceum and A. ochraceus. A survey of genome sequences representing 35 phylogenetically diverse Trichoderma species revealed that intact homologs of the cluster occurred in only two other species, which also produced aspinolides. An asp2 mutant inhibited fungal growth more than the wild type, but an asp1 mutant did not, and the greater inhibition by the asp2 mutant coincided with increased HA production. These findings indicate that asp1 and asp2 are aspinolide biosynthetic genes and that loss of either aspinolide or HA production in T. arundinaceum can be accompanied by increased production of the other metabolite(s). Key points • Two polyketide synthase genes are required for aspinolide biosynthesis. • Blocking aspinolide production increases production of the terpenoid harzianum A. • Aspinolides and harzianum A act redundantly in antibiosis of T. arundinaceum.

Investigar los principales mecanismos de acción de estas patologías ayuda a conocer, tratar e incluso poder prevenir este tipo de enfermedades. La aldosterona, una hormona esteroidea que ejerce su acción a través de la unión con el receptor de mineralocorticoide (RM), es una pieza fundamental en la regulación de la reabsorción de agua y la presión arterial. El exceso de aldosterona está asociado con enfermedades cardiovasculares y metabólicas, dentro de las que las que podemos encontrar anormalidades vasculares como la disfunción endotelial, remodelado vascular y cardiaco, aumento de la presión arterial, estrés oxidativo y fibrosis. En este trabajo se estudiarán las proantocianidinas como un posible agente cardioprotector en células de miocardio ventricular de rata H9c2, actuando como antagonista del RM y disminuyendo los efectos deletéreos del exceso de aldosterona sobre distintos aspectos relacionados con la hipertrofia cardiaca, una patología asociada con la hipertensión. Los resultados obtenidos sugieren que las proantocianidinas contrarrestan los efectos negativos de la aldosterona sobre las células H9c2 a nivel de supervivencia celular, daño en el genoma y diferenciación celular. Son necesarias nuevas investigaciones sobre este sistema para poder llegar a utilizar este agente como tratamiento en casos de hipertrofia cardiaca asociada a hiperaldosteronismo [EN] Cardiovascular diseases have long been the leading cause of death worldwide. Investigating the main mechanisms of action of these pathologies helps to understand, treat and even prevent this type of disease. Aldosterone, a steroid hormone that exerts its action through binding to the mineralocorticoid receptor (RM), is a key player in the regulation of water reabsorption and blood pressure. Aldosterone excess is associated with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, among which we can find vascular abnormalities such as endothelial dysfunction, vascular and cardiac remodeling, increased blood pressure, oxidative stress and fibrosis. In this work, proanthocyanidins will be studied as a possible cardioprotective agent in H9c2 rat ventricular myocardial cells, acting as an antagonist of the RM and reducing the deleterious effects of excess aldosterone on different aspects related to cardiac hypertrophy, a pathology associated with hypertension. The results obtained suggest that proanthocyanidins counteract the negative effects of aldosterone on H9c2 cells at a cell survival level, genome damage and cell differentiation. New research on this system is necessary to be able to use this agent as a treatment in cases of cardiac hypertrophy associated with hyperaldosteronism

18 páginas ; ilustraciones [ES] Las especies de plantas que sufren frecuentemente las consecuencias del fuego han ido adquiriendo características adaptativas a lo largo del tiempo. En el presente trabajo se analiza el efecto de las altas temperaturas alcanzadas en un incendio de severidad moderada y alta en la germinación de dos especies de pinos, Pinus pinaster Ait. y Pinus sylvestris L. Para lo cual, se estudia la germinación en placas petri y la germinación y crecimiento en tiestos, comparando la respuesta en función del tipo de suelo. Los resultados del experimento muestran una diferencia notable en cuanto a la germinación, siendo la de semillas de P. pinaster Ait. mucho más elevada que la de P. sylvestris L. Las semillas de P. pinaster Ait. muestran una mayor tasa de germinación tanto a 70oC como en situación control, aunque ninguna de las dos especies puede soportar temperaturas de 110oC. No se obtuvo germinación en tiesto de las semillas de Pinus sylvestris L. El crecimiento de las partes aéreas y subterráneas de plántulas de P. pinaster Ait. no se ve afectado por las altas temperaturas ni el tipo de sustrato, aunque este último si parece afectar a la relación longitud parte aérea/subterránea. [EN] Plant species that frequently suffer the consequences of fire have been acquiring adaptive characteristics over time. In the present work, the effect of the high temperatures reached in a fire of moderate and high severity on the germination of two species of pines, Pinus pinaster Ait. and Pinus sylvestris L., is analyzed. For which, germination in petri dishes and germination and growth in pots are studied, comparing the response depending on the type of soil. The results of the experiment show a notable difference in terms of germination, being that of Pinus pinaster Ait. seeds much higher than that of Pinus sylvestris L. Pinus pinaster Ait. seeds show a higher germination rate both at 70oC and in the control situation, although neither of the two species can withstand temperatures of 110oC. Pot germination of Pinus sylvestris L. seeds was not obtained. The growth of the aerial and subterranean parts of Pinus pinaster Ait. seedlings is not affected by high temperatures or the type of substrate, although the latter does seem to affect the aerial/underground part length ratio.

38 páginas, ilustraciones [ES] Uno de los mayores desafíos que se plantea en la actualidad es la necesidad de desarrollar nuevas metodologías de detección de contaminantes en medios acuáticos, para ello las nanopartículas de óxidos metálicos se postulan como una de las mejores alternativas gracias a sus propiedades físico-químicas únicas. En consecuencia, se ha desarrollado una metodología simple y eficiente de síntesis de nanopartículas de óxido de circonio (ZrO2) mediante precipitación de hidróxidos, en la cual, se ha evaluado tanto la concentración de precipitante (NH3) como el tratamiento térmico utilizado. El material resultante se ha caracterizado empleando cinco técnicas instrumentales: TEM, SEM-EDX, XRD, Raman y FTI-IR, y posteriormente, mediante la espectrofotometría UV-Vis, se ha estudiado preliminarmente su viabilidad en la determinación de SMX, al ser uno de los antibióticos más contaminantes del medio ambiente. Los mejores resultados se obtuvieron de las muestras calcinadas a 600 ºC a 2 M de NH3, al presentar nanopartículas más pequeñas y con distribuciones más uniformes que a otras temperaturas. En todas ellas, se identificaron fases cristalinas tanto m-ZrO2 como t-ZrO2 y, asimismo, se evidenciaron vibraciones de enlace características del ZrO2. Pese a que sea necesario investigar en esta línea, los estudios preliminares de retención en función del pH mostraron resultados óptimos entorno a valores de pH 6 [EN] One of the biggest challenges that is currently being considered is the need to develop new methodologies for detecting contaminants in aquatic environments, for this, metal oxide nanoparticles are postulated as one of the best alternatives based on their unique physicalchemical properties. Consequently, a simple and efficient methodology for synthesis of zirconium oxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles through the precipitation of hydroxides has been developed, in which the concentration of precipitant (NH3) and the thermal treatment have been evaluated. The resulting material has been characterized using five instrumental techniques: TEM, SEM-EDX, XRD, Raman and FT-IR, later, using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, its viability has been preliminarily studied in the determination of SMX, because it’s one of the most polluting antibiotics in the environment. The best results were obtained from samples calcined at 600 ºC at 2 M of NH3, because thy present smaller nanoparticles with more uniform distribution than at other temperatures. In all of them, m-ZrO2 and t-ZrO2 crystalline phases were identified and the characteristic binding vibrations of ZrO2 were observed. Although it’s necessary to investigate in this line, the preliminary retention studies as a function of pH showed optimal results around pH values of 6

26 páginas, ilustraciones [ES] El objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar los eventos de quema de biomasa e intrusión de sulfatos europeos que afectaron a diferentes sectores de la Península Ibérica desde 2005 hasta 2020. Los datos empleados han sido suministrados por el Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico. Se han analizado las tendencias anuales y estacionales. Además, se han estudiado los tipos de tiempo para comprobar su potencial relación con los eventos de quema de biomasa e intrusión de sulfatos. Los resultados muestran que el sector Noroeste es el más afectado tanto por eventos de quema de biomasa como por intrusiones de sulfatos. Los eventos de quema de biomasa son más frecuentes en verano, mientras que las intrusiones de sulfato son más frecuentes en primavera. Adicionalmente, se identificaron episodios de incendios forestales que coincidieron con superaciones del valor límite diario de PM10 (50 μg/m3 , establecido por la Directiva 2008/50/CE) en la ciudad de León y se seleccionó un evento para evaluar su efecto en la calidad del aire de la ciudad. El uso de herramientas adicionales (modelo Hysplit y NAAPs) permitió identificar el origen de las masas de aire que llegaron a la ciudad de León en esos días [EN] The objective of this work is to study biomass burning events and intrusion of European sulphates that affected different sectors of mainland Spain from 2005 to 2020. Data for each sector were retrieved from the site of Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. The annual and seasonal trends have been analysed. Moreover, the weather types have been studied to check their potential relation with the biomass burning events and intrusion of sulphates. The results showed that the northwest sector is the most affected by both biomass burning events and sulphate intrusions. Biomass burning events are more frequent in summer while sulphate intrusions are more frequent in spring. Additionally, wildfires episodes that coincided with exceedances of the PM10 daily limit value (50 μg/m3 , established by Directive 2008/50/EC) in the city of León were identified and an event was selected to evaluate its effect on the city air quality. Moreover, additional tools (model Hysplit and NAAPs) allowed to identify the origin of the air masses that reached the city of León on those days

Las micorrizas son asociaciones simbióticas entre unos hongos específicos y la mayoría de las raíces de las plantas. Por su parte, el empleo de las micorrizas en agricultura aún está por desarrollar, por lo que en este trabajo se recoge, sintetizada, la información disponible en la bibliografía global de los últimos 13 años. Así, podemos tener una visión panorámica de los efectos que tienen las diferentes micorrizas sobre los cultivos simbiontes, respecto a los factores bióticos propios de las micorrizas y abióticos. Las interacciones entre hongos y plantas pueden conferir a los cultivos un grado de desarrollo equiparable al empleo de insumos químicos. En agricultura ecológica, se proponen este tipo de técnicas como una alternativa. Estudiando e implementando esta capacidad natural de los organismos para asociarse, se pueden conseguir avances importantes en el reto que supone la creciente demanda de alimentos, presentándose así las micorrizas como una alternativa sostenible para afrontar el futuro, fijando el objetivo en propiciar el equilibrio de los ecosistemas, para que las especies, incluida la nuestra, sean resilientes y viables [EN] The plants and fungi interactions exist since the first earth surface colonization carried out by the plants. The ecosystems will be very different as they are nowadays without this interactions. The mycorrhizae are symbiotic association between a specific type of fungi and the majority of the plant’s root system. The use of mycorrhizae in agriculture is still undeveloped. This paper summarizes the global documentation of the subject in the las 13 years. The purpose of this paper is to provide a wide picture of the types of mycorrhizae and their effects on the industrial crops. The propension of the mycorrhizae fungi to colonise the plants is also summarized. The plant-fungi interactions may provide a similar development as the provided by the equivalent chemical products. One of the lines of work in organic agriculture is the use of mycorrhizae as substitute of the chemical inputs. This is conditioned by the region climate, soil composition, and the type and variant of the mycorrhizae. The growing world population creates a growing food demand. The study, development and implementation of this techniques will provide a sustainable source of food. This will also keep the sustainability of the world ecosystems and the species contained in them, including the human being

28 páginas, ilustraciones [ES] Numerosos estudios han demostrado que la aldosterona tiene efectos oxidantes, proinflamatorios y pro-fibróticos que pueden conducir al desarrollo de hipertrofia cardiaca (HC), cuya progresión da lugar a enfermedades cardiovasculares. A pesar de la existencia de tratamientos frente a la HC es necesario identificar nuevos agentes capaces de frenar su progresión. En los últimos años se ha observado que ciertos polifenoles poseen efectos cardioprotectores. El objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar los efectos de la combinación de polifenoles sobre las alteraciones moleculares producidas por la aldosterona en un modelo in vitro de HC. Para ello, se estimularon cardiomiocitos H9c2 de rata con aldosterona y se coincubaron con la combinación de dos polifenoles; proantocianidinas (ProA) y galato de epigalocatequina (EGCG). Se realizó el análisis de la supervivencia celular, el análisis de la oxidación y actividad mitocondrial y se valoró el grado de diferenciación celular. La estimulación con aldosterona redujo la supervivencia celular, lo que confirma las alteraciones moleculares que provoca sobre los cardiomiocitos. En cuanto a los tratamientos, no se obtuvieron resultados estadísticamente significativos. Sin embargo, se puede concluir que el tratamiento con una combinación de ProA y EGCG en dosis elevadas puede llegar a ser perjudicial para las células [EN] Numerous studies have shown that aldosterone has oxidative, pro-inflammatory and profibrotic effects that can lead to the development of cardiac hypertrophy (CH), the progression of which can develop into cardiovascular diseases. Despite the existence of treatments for CH, there is a need to identify new agents capable of slowing its progression. Recently, certain polyphenols have shown cardioprotective effects. The aim of this work is to study the effects of a combination of polyphenols on the molecular alterations produced by aldosterone in an in vitro model of CH. To this end, rat H9c2 cardiomyocytes were stimulated with aldosterone and co-incubated with the combination of two polyphenols; proanthocyanidins (ProA) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Analysis of cell survival, analysis of mitochondrial oxidation and activity and assessment of the degree of cell differentiation were performed. Aldosterone stimulation reduced cell survival, confirming the molecular alterations it causes in cardiomyocytes. As for the treatments, no statistically significant results were obtained. However, it can be concluded that treatment with a combination of ProA and EGCG at high doses may be detrimental to cells

25 páginas, tablas [ES] El ecofeminismo es una corriente de pensamiento que surge debido a la degradación ambiental y defiende que la opresión de las mujeres y la naturaleza tienen bases comunes y, por tanto, deben abordarse de forma conjunta. Sin embargo, a pesar de que esta postura fuera ganando protagonismo a finales del siglo XX, en los últimos años cada vez se ha ido teniendo menos en cuenta la dimensión social a la hora de analizar los problemas ambientales. El objetivo de este trabajo ha sido realizar una revisión bibliográfica sobre los principales temas que aborda el ecofeminismo para conocer de qué manera puede ayudar a solucionar la crisis ambiental actual. Para ello, se realizó una búsqueda en distintos repositorios aplicando distintos criterios para reducir el número de referencias obtenidas. Tras esto, se seleccionó un número acorde a la magnitud del trabajo para su revisión en detalle. Los resultados muestran cuatro líneas de discusión principales: 1) críticas al movimiento ecofeminista, 2) diferente comportamiento y consecuencias respecto a los problemas ambientales entre hombres y mujeres, 3) importancia de la perspectiva ecofeminista y 4) situación de su aplicación en políticas medioambientales. Las críticas al movimiento se basan en el rechazo a la clásica posición esencialista que defiende un vínculo inherente entre mujeres y naturaleza, pero aun así hay evidencias de que existen diferencias según el género respecto a sus actitudes con el medio ambiente. La importancia de tener en cuenta este y otros factores sociales explican la necesidad vigente del ecofeminismo ya que, omitiendo estos elementos, las medidas tomadas frente a la crisis ambiental serán insuficiente [EN] Ecofeminism is a school of thought that arose because of the environmental degradation and argues that the oppression suffered by women and nature have common ground and should therefore be addressed together. However, although this position gained relevance at the end of the 20th century, in recent years the social dimension has been taken increasingly less into account in the analysis of environmental problems. The aim of this study was to carry out a bibliographical review of the main issues addressed by ecofeminism to find out the ways in which may help solving the current environmental crisis. To this end, a search was carried out in different repositories applying different criteria to reduce the number of references obtained. After this, a number commensurate with the magnitude of the work was selected for a detailed review. The results show four main lines of discussion: 1) criticisms of the ecofeminist movement, 2) different behaviour and consequences regarding environmental problems between men and women, 3) importance of the ecofeminist perspective and 4) status of its application in environmental policy. Criticisms of the movement are based on the rejection of the classical essentialist position that advocates for an intrinsic link between women and nature, but the evidence shows that there actually are differences between men and women in their attitudes towards the environment. The importance of taking this and other social factors into account explains the ongoing need for ecofeminism because proposed environmental measures will be insufficient if these elements are omitted
