1. Rôle et impact environnemental du cuivre et du zinc en élevage porcin : de l’alimentation au retour au sol des effluents

Abstract

Le zinc et le cuivre sont des éléments-traces métalliques (ÉTM) qui peuvent présenter à plus ou moins long terme un risque environnemental pour les sols agricoles sur lesquels sont valorisées les déjections porcines. Ces ÉTM sont essentiels pour la croissance et la santé des porcs en élevage, ils sont donc ajoutés dans l’aliment sous forme de supplémentation. Cependant, du fait de leur faible taux de rétention chez le porc, ils se retrouvent très majoritairement excrétés dans les déjections. De plus, ce sont des ressources minérales naturelles limitées. Il est alors essentiel de caractériser leurs flux le long du continuum aliments-déjections-traitements-sols afin de maîtriser au mieux leur utilisation. Un état des lieux des connaissances sur ces flux montre que l’alimentation est le principal levier pour limiter les rejets de ces ETM vers l’environnement. La réglementation européenne fixe actuellement des teneurs limites des aliments en zinc et en cuivre (e.g. pour un porc en engraissement, 120 et 25 mg.kg- 1 MS respectivement). Le traitement des déjections est un second levier pour optimiser la valorisation de ces effluents d’élevage et mieux gérer la redistribution de ces ÉTM sur les sols, en les concentrant dans certains produits plus facilement exportables vers des zones en déficit. Une meilleure connaissance de leur forme chimique tout au long de la filière est aussi nécessaire pour mieux maîtriser leur devenir et préciser les risques pour l’environnement. Des recherches restent nécessaires pour affiner les stratégies d’apport dans les aliments, tout en conservant les performances et la santé des animaux et en prenant en compte les différentes modalités de gestion des effluents dans le cadre d’une bioéconomie circulaire.

Abstract

Separation of faeces and urine under slats in swine buildings using different technologies such as V-shaped scraper is becoming popular. Indeed, such a separation can allow improving air quality in the building and can also facilitate management of manure through concentration of carbon and phosphorus in the solid phase. Though solid phase management is well established through anaerobic digestion, the liquid phase, mainly urine, is still to be recycled or disposed of. However, the characteristics of this kind of effluent are quite different compared to slurry obtained from conventional building and corresponding to a mix of urine and faeces. Such characteristics are poorly documented and very few data are available in the literature. This dataset provides insight on the characteristics of this effluent to achieve treatment or nutrient recovery. Nine pig farms equipped with a V-shaped scraper and using different farming practices were selected for the sampling of this liquid phase. Building characteristics including animal capacity and physiological stage of animals and feeding strategy were taken into account. The characterisation of this effluent focused on global parameters (pH, Alkalinity, TS, VS, TSS, VSS) but also on the carbon and nitrogen content (COD, TKN, TAN). Total compounds and dissolved ions were also analysed to round off the characterisation. Finally, the characteristics of such liquid effluent were compared to urine collected directly from animals without contact with faeces.

Abstract

This article contains the data of 11 organic substrates including physicochemical, biochemical and nutritional characterisations. Additionally, it includes for all substrates the data of organic matter fractionation into easily biodegradable, slowly biodegradable and inert fractions performed with anaerobic respirometry method. Finally, based on physicochemical characterisations and organic matter fractionation, a detailed methodology for the determination of input state variables required for the anaerobic digestion model N°1 (ADM1) was presented and the dataset for all substrates is provided. An example of calculation for one substrate illustrates the methodology for the determination of these variables. Data provided in this article could be useful to any person interested in modelling anaerobic digestion and particularly co-digestion. Abstract

The data presented in this article regroup characterisation of organic matter and nutritional composition of 42 organic wastes and residues usually used as substrates for anaerobic digestion. Those wastes have different origins from agro-industrial, agricultural and urban sectors in France including: algae, slaughterhouse waste, fat, food waste, fruits and vegetables residues, green waste, slurry, manure, wastewater treatment plant sludge and agricultural residues. The properties of organic matter are distinguished between global parameters (pH, total solids, volatile solids, COD and BMP), organic matter fractionation (biochemical and Van Soest) and the main nutrients content (N, P, K, Mg, Ca and S).

Microalgal and cyanobacterial resource recovery systems could significantly advance nutrient recovery from wastewater by achieving effluent nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) levels below the current limit of technology. The successful implementation of phytoplankton, however, requires the formulation of process models that balance fidelity and simplicity to accurately simulate dynamic performance in response to environmental conditions. This work synthesizes the range of model structures that have been leveraged for algae and cyanobacteria modeling and core model features that are required to enable reliable process modeling in the context of water resource recovery facilities. Results from an extensive literature review of over 300 published phytoplankton models are presented, with particular attention to similarities with and differences from existing strategies to model chemotrophic wastewater treatment processes (e.g., via the Activated Sludge Models, ASMs). Building on published process models, the core requirements of a model structure for algal and cyanobacterial processes are presented, including detailed recommendations for the prediction of growth (under phototrophic, heterotrophic, and mixotrophic conditions), nutrient uptake, carbon uptake and storage, and respiration. Abstract

Biochemical methane potential (BMP) is essential to determine the production of methane for various substrates; literature shows important discrepancies for the same substrates. In this paper, a harmonized BMP protocol was developed and tested with two phases of BMP tests carried out by eleven French laboratories. Surprisingly, for the three same solid tested substrates (straw; raw mix and dried-shredded mix of potatoes, maize, beef meat and straw; and mayonnaise), the standard deviations of the repeatability and reproducibility inter-laboratory were not enhanced by the harmonized protocol (average of about 25% depending on the substrate), as compared to a previous step where all laboratories used their own protocols. Moreover, statistical analyses of all the results, after removal of the outliers (about 15% of all observations), did not highlight significant effect of the operational effect on BMP (stirring, automatic or manual gas quantification, use of trace metal, uses a bicarbonate buffer, inoculum to substrate ratio) at least for the tested ranges. On the other hand, the average intra-laboratory repeatability was low, about 7%, whatever the protocol, the substrate and the laboratory. It also appears that drying the SA substrate, which contained proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and fibers, does not impact its BMP.

Abstract

Anaerobic digestion is an increasingly widespread process for organic waste treatment and renewable energy production due to the methane content of the biogas. This biological process also produces a digestate (i.e., the remaining content of the waste after treatment) with a high fertilizing potential. The digestate composition is highly variable due to the various organic wastes used as feedstock, the different plant configurations, and the post-treatment processes used. In order to optimize digestate spreading on agricultural soils by optimizing the fertilizer dose and, thus, reducing environmental impacts associated to digestate application, the agronomic characterization of digestate is essential. This study investigates the use of near infrared spectroscopy for predicting the most important agronomic parameters from freeze-dried digestates. A data set of 193 digestates was created to calibrate partial least squares regression models predicting organic matter, total organic carbon, organic nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents. Abstract

Hydrolysis is considered the limiting step during solid waste anaerobic digestion (including co-digestion of sludge and biosolids). Mechanisms of hydrolysis are mechanistically not well understood with detrimental impact on model predictive capability. The common approach to multiple substrates is to consider simultaneous degradation of the substrates. This may not have the capacity to separate the different kinetics. Sequential degradation of substrates is theoretically supported by microbial capacity and the composite nature of substrates (bioaccessibility concept). However, this has not been experimentally assessed. Sequential chemical fractionation has been successfully used to define inputs for an anaerobic digestion model. In this paper, sequential extractions of organic substrates were evaluated in order to compare both models. By removing each fraction (from the most accessible to the least accessible fraction) from three different substrates, anaerobic incubation tests showed that for physically structured substrates, such as activated sludge and wheat straw, sequential approach could better describe experimental results, while this was less important for homogeneous materials such as pulped fruit. Following this, anaerobic incubation tests were performed on five substrates. Cumulative methane production was modelled by the simultaneous and sequential approaches. Results showed that the sequential model could fit the experimental data for all the substrates whereas simultaneous model did not work for some substrates. © 2019

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, nitrogen transformations were studied on 13 substrates from agro-industrial, agricultural or urban sources using a new method. This method was developed to determine the kinetics and balance of nitrogen transformation during anaerobic digestion with high inoculum-to-substrate ratio while avoiding instabilities with nutrients addition. Inoculum was washed to reduce ammonium content and carbonates were added to adjust buffer capacity. Results show that kinetics of nitrogen mineralisation depends mainly on initial substrate. Nitrogen was quickly transformed before stabilisation (from 2 to 8 days). Four types of nitrogen transformation were identified: (a) rapid mineralisation (transformation of organic nitrogen (Norg) into ammonium) for blood, (b) moderate mineralisation, for sludge, green waste and food waste, (c) limited protein hydrolysis (no transformation of nitrogen forms) for slurry and manure and, (d) immobilisation of nitrogen (transformation of ammonium into Norg (biomass growth)) for fruits, straw and greases. Biological nitrogen potential (BNP) ranged from ' 7.1 to 22.8 gN kgWW'1 and showed a good correlation (R2 = 0.80) with Norg from substrates. On co-digestion tests, no significant inhibitions of mineralisation nor synergies between substrates were assessed allowing to calculate BNP value of the mix as the weighting average of the BNP values of each added substrate. Examples of calculation of nitrogen form on digestate show that do not use BNP may induce to under or overestimations of the final NH4 + content. A comparison of this methodology with an already published methodology shows an excellent correlation but a systematic difference of 7.2 gN kgWW'1, which seems to be explained by a better capacity of the methodology developed in this study to describe immobilisation phenomena. © 2019, Springer Nature B.V.

Abstract

Biochemical methane potential (BMP) is essential to determine the production of methane for various substrates, literature shows important discrepancies for the same substrates. In this paper, a harmonized BMP protocol was developed and tested with two phases of BMP tests carried out by eleven French laboratories. Surprisingly, for the three same solid tested substrates (straw, raw mix and dried-shredded mix of potatoes, maize, beef meat and straw, and mayonnaise), the standard deviations of the repeatability and reproducibility inter-laboratory were not enhanced by the harmonized protocol (average of about 25% depending on the substrate), as compared to a previous step where all laboratories used their own protocols. Moreover, statistical analyses of all the results, after removal of the outliers (about 15% of all observations), did not highlight significant effect of the operational effect on BMP (stirring, automatic or manual gas quantification, use of trace metal, uses a bicarbonate buffer, inoculum to substrate ratio) at least for the tested ranges. On the other hand, the average intra-laboratory repeatability was low, about 7%, whatever the protocol, the substrate and the laboratory. It also appears that drying the SA substrate, which contained proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and fibers, does not impact its BMP.

Abstract

Manure from animal production is commonly spread on agricultural soil as an organic fertiliser to provide macro and trace elements to crops. However, some trace elements can accumulate in the soil and become toxic to plants and microorganisms. These elements include copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), which can be applied in large quantities when pig manure is spread. The feeding strategy and manure management (e.g. through treatment chains) are two mechanisms identified to better control the use of these elements, but their fate from the feed to the soil in pig production remains poorly documented. Better understanding the fate of Cu and Zn, as well as that of other trace and macro elements, along the feed – excreta – waste chain is required to develop alternative ways to reduce their environmental impacts. This dataset provides insight into the composition (Cu, Zn and other trace and macro elements) of organic products along two contrasting manure management chains: (1) only storage or (2) in-building separation, anaerobic digestion (AD) of solids, and digestate drying. Feed, raw slurry, liquid and solid phases after separation of the manure and AD products were sampled and then analysed to measure their total compound contents.

Abstract

International audience; A detailed study of a solid slaughterhouse waste (SHW) anaerobic treatment is presented. The waste used in this study is rich in lipids and proteins residue. Long chain fatty acids (LCFA), coming from the hydrolysis of lipids were inhibitory to anaerobic processes at different degrees. Acetogenesis and methanogenesis processes were mainly affected by inhibition whereas disintegration and hydrolysis processes did not seem to be affected by high LCFA concentrations. Nevertheless, because of the high energy content, this kind of waste is very suitable for anaerobic digestion but strict control of operating conditions is required to prevent inhibition. For that, two inhibition indicators were identified in this study. Those two indicators, LCFA dynamics and LCFA/VSbiomass ratio proved to be useful to predict and to estimate the process inhibition degree. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract

Microalgal and cyanobacterial resource recovery systems could significantly advance nutrient recovery from wastewater by achieving effluent nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) levels below the current limit of technology. The successful implementation of phytoplankton, however, requires the formulation of process models that balance fidelity and simplicity to accurately simulate dynamic performance in response to environmental conditions. This work synthesizes the range of model structures that have been leveraged for algae and cyanobacteria modeling and core model features that are required to enable reliable process modeling in the context of water resource recovery facilities. Results from an extensive literature review of over 300 published phytoplankton models are presented, with particular attention to similarities with and differences from existing strategies to model chemotrophic wastewater treatment processes (e.g., via the Activated Sludge Models, ASMs). Building on published process models, the core requirements of a model structure for algal and cyanobacterial processes are presented, including detailed recommendations for the prediction of growth (under phototrophic, heterotrophic, and mixotrophic conditions), nutrient uptake, carbon uptake and storage, and respiration., Graphical abstract Image 1, Highlights • A critical review of 324 peer-reviewed phytoplankton models was conducted. • Modeling approaches for pseudo-mechanistic processes are synthesized. • Key factors (e.g., C, P, temperature) were only included in ∼25% of models. • Core model structure for wastewater treatment is proposed to advance model utility. • Future efforts should build on existing IWA models for transparency and usability.

Abstract

International audience; The appropriate conditions needed to achieve nitrogen (N) removal from swine wastewater (SW) in an activated sludge continuous stirred-tank reactor (+settler) were assessed by performing numerical simulations. Air supply was considered through continuous or intermittent aeration (CA vs. IA), and several values were assumed for the SW BOD5-to-N ratio. By considering CA and low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels, feasibility for peforming N removal via nitrite through simultaneous nitrification–denitrification was confirmed. Nitrogen removal via nitrite was also the case when applying IA, even at higher DO ranges. The nitrite short-cut was shown to reduce energy consumption for aeration. However, regardless of the aeration method applied, sensitive DO controls will be required, particularly when the SW BOD5-to-N ratio takes low values. This study allowed to assess the operational conditions required when biologically treating SW to meet N standards and to identify situations in which a final post-treatment is needed before effluent discharge.

Abstract

International audience; Swine wastewater was treated in two continuously aerated activated sludge (AS) systems at high (AS1: 1.7'2.6 mg/L) and low (AS2: 0.04'0.08 mg/L) dissolved oxygen (DO), and at three temperatures (10, 20, and 30 °C). Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) removal was >94.8%. Meanwhile, total nitrogen (N) removal was significantly higher in AS2, at 64, 89, and 88%, than in AS1, at 12, 24, and 46%, for 10, 20, and 30 °C, respectively. The experimental data were considered in a simulation study using an AS model for BOD and N removal, which also included nitrite, free ammonia, free nitrous acid, and temperature. Simulations at high-DO showed that ammonium was partly oxidized into nitrate but not removed, whereas at low-DO ammonium was removed mainly through the nitrite shortcut in simultaneous nitrification'denitrification. This study demonstrates that treatment at low-DO is an effective method for removing N, and modelling a helpful tool for its optimization. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess positive or negative impacts of anaerobic digestion (AD) on water quality using a systemic approach. To this end, we used the agro-hydrological model Topography-based Nitrogen Transfer and Transformation (TNT2), a spatially explicit model that simulates nitrogen and water flows at the watershed scale on a daily time step. Four scenarios were constructed and analyzed: a baseline before the introduction of AD (S0), AD with adjusted fertilization (S1), AD with unadjusted fertilization (S2), and agroecological AD (S3). The results showed that, when spreading practices were similar and an equivalent amount of effective nitrogen was applied, digested pig slurry generally had a predicted amount of nitrate leaching similar to that of undigested pig slurry. In addition, replacing catch crops with energy cover crops had little impact on water quality. Scenario S3 was the most favorable one for water quality and biogas production, but not for soil organic nitrogen storage and food and feed production. This study’s strength is its systemic approach, which considered both environmental and agronomic aspects to assess the scenarios.

Abstract

International audience; Models for anaerobic digestion of lipid-rich waste taking inhibition into account were reviewed and, if necessary, adjusted to the ADM1 model framework in order to compare them. Experimental data from anaerobic digestion of slaughterhouse waste at an organic loading rate (OLR) ranging from 0.3 to 1.9kgVSm'3d'1 were used to compare and evaluate models. Experimental data obtained at low OLRs were accurately modeled whatever the model thereby validating the stoichiometric parameters used and influent fractionation. However, at higher OLRs, although inhibition parameters were optimized to reduce differences between experimental and simulated data, no model was able to accurately simulate accumulation of substrates and intermediates, mainly due to the wrong simulation of pH. A simulation using pH based on experimental data showed that acetogenesis and methanogenesis were the most sensitive steps to LCFA inhibition and enabled identification of the inhibition parameters of both steps. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract

Interest in organic waste(water) processing by anaerobic digestion to produce biogas as renewable energy source has increased significantly in recent years. The characteristics of the digested effluents vary depending on the feedstocks treated, and different handling alternatives are possible. This study reviews advances in science and technology in the specific field of nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) management from biogas digester effluents during the last two decades (from 1995 to 2014) using a bibliometric approach. Information concerning publications as representative of the outputs of scientific research, and concerning patents as representative of the outputs of technological development was retrieved from specialised databases and analysed systematically. The number of publications was twice the number of patents. Production followed a rising trend (in both cases, partial productivity in the last 5 years was >45%). The United States, China and Japan were the three most prolific countries when considering the joint production of publications and patents. However, while the number of publications was higher than the number of patents for the United States, the opposite was true for China and Japan. The institutions which published more (and also the most cited items) were mainly European, whereas Asian countries were more active in filing for patents even though the patents from the United States were more frequently cited. Relative interest in particular nutrient management alternatives and their evolution were identified. Reducing the consumption of resources, implementing integral solutions and circular economy approaches will be among key issues in future studies and development to promote sustainability.

Abstract

The agriculture, forestry and other land use sector are responsible for 24% (10–12 Pg CO2e per year) of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions worldwide, with concomitant opportunities for mitigation. A scientific panel used deliberative methods to identify ten technical measures comprising 26 sub-measures to reduce GHG emissions from agriculture in France. Their abatement potential and cost are compared. The proposed measures concern nitrogen (N) management, management practices that increase carbon stocks in soils and biomass, livestock diets, and energy production and consumption on farms. Results show that the total abatement potential can be divided into three parts. One third of the cumulated abatement potential corresponds to sub-measures that can be implemented at a negative technical cost. These sub-measures focus on increased efficiency in input use including N fertilisers, animal feed and energy. The second third are sub-measures with moderate cost (€25 per metric Mg of avoided CO2e). These require investment with no direct financial return, the purchase of particular inputs, dedicated labour time or involve production losses. Assuming additivity, the cumulated abatement is 32.3 Tg CO2e per year in 2030, but only 10 Tg (i.e. 10% of current agricultural emissions) when calculated under current inventory rules. This study confirms that a significant abatement potential exists in the agricultural sector, with two thirds of this potential at low or even negative cost. This is likely to be an underestimated as it is based on a status quo of the current agricultural system. Results also emphasise the need to upgrade inventory rules so that efforts to reduce emissions can be accounted for.

Abstract

International audience; An experimental design was set up to understand the influence of five process parameters on the kinetics of struvite precipitation in synthetic swine wastewaters. The responses studied were the kinetics of phosphorus (P) removal, the struvite precipitation rate and the dissolution rate of amorphous calcium phosphates (ACP). The kinetic study showed that the Premoval was complete in less than 1 h and was influenced positively by the added MgO. The precipitation of struvite with MgO was confirmed to follow a first-order kinetic. This study showed that ACP co-precipitated with struvite during the first 30 min. Afterwards, ACP dissolved to maintain the phosphates balance limiting the struvite growth. An initial Mg:Ca > 1.5 induced a complete dissolution of ACP in 1 h. Another experiment was conducted and it validated the results of the statistical model. This experiment also determined that 7–10 h was the best time to recover large crystals. After 10 h, the crystals were broken by stirring.

Abstract

International audience; The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) consists on the biological conversion of ammonium (NH4 + ) into dinitrogen gas under absence of oxygen. Nitrite (NO2 ) is a substrate of the anammox reaction, but also an inhibitor at high concentrations. This study investigates the effect of nitrite on the microbial community during the batch enrichment of anammox sludge. Six inoculums collected from different environments were enriched after a conditioning pretreatment and under controlled conditions during 4 months. Concerning the mineral medium used, two different nitrite supply strategies were applied; i.e., (i) initially low concentration at 25 mg NO2–N/L and progressive increase to 150 mg NO2–N/L, and (ii) constant high concentration at 150 mg NO2 –N/L. All tested inoculums developed anammox activity but only when the enrichment was started at low nitrite concentration. In such case, the specific ammonium conversion rates finally obtained ranged from 21 ± 1 to 118 ± 1 mg NH4 + –N/g VS/d (VS, volatile solids). Abundance of the functional gene encoding for the enzyme hydrazine oxidoreductase (hzo) was assessed using the real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (q-PCR) showing positive correlation with the anammox activity finally reported. In addition, high-throughput DNA sequencing helped to elucidate the underlying microbial community dynamics. The raw inoculum source, the conditioning pretreatment, and the cultivation conditions applied were jointly determinants of the final microbial community structure of the enrichments despite a clear convergence at the end of the experimental period. On the other hand, the cultivation conditions alone determined the selection of anammox species belonging to the genus Candidatus Brocadia.

Abstract

Livestock farming systems are major sources of trace gases contributing to emissions of the greenhouse gases (GHG) nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and methane (CH 4 ), i.e. N 2 O accounts for 10% and CH 4 for 30% of the anthropogenic contributions to net global warming. This paper presents scenario assessments of whole-system effects of technologies for reducing GHG emissions from livestock model farms using slurry-based manure management. Changes in housing and storage practice, mechanical separation, and incineration of the solid fraction derived from separation were evaluated in scenarios for Sweden, Denmark, France, and Italy. The results demonstrated that changes in manure management can induce significant changes in CH 4 and N 2 O emissions and carbon sequestration, and that the effect of introducing environmental technologies may vary significantly with livestock farming practice and interact with climatic conditions. Shortening the in-house manure storage time reduced GHG emissions by 0-40%. The largest GHG reductions of 49 to, in one case, 82% were obtained with a combination of slurry separation and incineration, the latter process contributing to a positive GHG balance of the system by substituting fossil fuels. The amount and composition of volatile solids (VS) and nitrogen pools were main drivers in the calculations performed, and requirements to improve the assessment of VS composition and turnover during storage and in the field were identified. Nevertheless, the results clearly showed that GHG emission estimates will be unrealistic, if the assumed manure management or climatic conditions do not properly represent a given country or region. The results also showed that the mitigation potential of specific manure management strategies and technologies varied depending on current management and climatic conditions.

To increase the phosphorus recycling potential, mineral phosphorus products have to be obtained not only from the liquid but also from the solid phase of piggery wastewater needing new physicochemical processes to be investigated. Discarding phosphorus from organic matter by a previous solubilisation of phosphorus improves the potential recycling yield. In this aim, evolution of dissolved phosphorus was studied during a simplified sequencing batch reactor process. Two slurries were tested in a sequencing batch reactor pilot plant to see if the biological phosphorus metabolism could be used to obtain a phosphorusenriched effluent suitable for chemically recycling phosphorus. Dissolved phosphorus, calcium, magnesium and intracellular carbon storage as polyhydroxybutyrate were measured. When available carbon was sufficient both biological and chemical mechanisms were involved in phosphorus evolution. Dissolved P concentration was increased by up to seven fold by the biological treatment. However, the precipitation/dissolution of phosphate driven by the pH was dominant to explain the changes during one treatment cycle. Higher dissolved phosphorus concentration was obtained at the end of the acidification step due to nitrification. This result was discussed in the perspective to develop alternative strategies to obtain an enriched effluent suitable for a sidestream phosphorus recycling process.

Abstract

The cultivation of microalgae with digestate supernatant is a promising process for the recovery of mineralized nutrients (P, N) from anaerobic digestion. Nevertheless, the variability of phosphorus concentration in the influent could limit this process. The impact of initial N:P ratios between 3 and 76gNgP(-1) was studied and proved no growth limitation over 14-day batch experiments even when P was depleted. Nitrogen assimilation was not affected by phosphorus concentrations and reached 10.1mgNL(-1)d(-1) whereas phosphorus removal ranged from 0.6 to 2.0mgPL(-1)d(-1). The biomass N:P ratio was found to be a function of the influent N:P ratio. Phosphorus storage by microalgae was thus confirmed. Nitrification was found to be highly dependent on the initial phosphorus concentration. The evolution of microalgae communities was also monitored and revealed the advantage of Scenedesmus over Chlorella when the media was phosphorus-depleted.

Abstract

International audience; A sustainable way to recover phosphorus (P) in swine wastewater involves a preliminary step of P dissolution followed by the separation of particulate organic matter (OM). The next two steps are firstly the precipitation of struvite crystals done by adding a crystallization reagent (magnesia) and secondly the filtration of the crystals. To develop the process successfully at an industrial scale, the control of the mechanisms of precipitation is the key point in order to obtain high value-added products, that is, big struvite crystals easy to harvest and handle. Experiments with process parameters optimized previously in a synthetic swine wastewater were performed on real swine wastewater to assess the role of the OM on struvite crystallization. After 24'h, with a pH increase to 6.8 only, 90% of the initial P was precipitated and 60% was precipitated as struvite. 80% of the solid recovered was in the fraction'>'100'µm. The other forms recovered were brushite, amorphous calcium phosphate, NaCl, KCl and OM. The influence of OM on struvite precipitation in acidified swine wastewater was negative on the reaction kinetics but positive on the size of the struvite crystals. The presence of colloidal particles increased the size of the struvite crystals but slowed down the kinetics due to the viscosity induced by the repulsive force of the colloids. Abstract

Field measurements of ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were made from raw pig slurry storage, from different biological aerobic treatments and from stores holding the treated products. Biological treatments consisted of intermittent aeration by (i) submerged ejector aerator, (ii) surface aerator and (iii) fine-bubble diffuser. Emissions were measured from the solid separated fraction of raw slurry and from whole-aerated slurry and from supernatant and sludge following sedimentation. Measurements of gaseous emissions were made under field conditions using the dynamic chamber technique for all liquids (raw slurry, reactors and treatment by-products) and by enclosing the heap of solid separated fraction in a large polytunnel with air drawn up by a fan. The results showed that the emissions of CH4, CO2 and NH3 were greater for the non-aerated effluents (raw slurry and separated solid fraction) which have a higher ammonium and organic matter level than for treatment by-products. [Departement_IRSTEA]MA [TR1_IRSTEA]TED / EPURE; International audience; In intensive farming areas, the design of biological nitrogen removal plants for piggery wastewater requires the determination of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) fractions of the effluent. For this purpose, an experimental procedure was developed to quantify the inert soluble (SI) and particulate (XI) COD fractions, as well as the readily (SS) and the slowly (XS) biodegradable COD fractions. For the four wastewasters tested, the SI and the XI fractions were equal to 3-4 g O21-1 and 17-28 g O21-1, respectively, which resulted in a total inert fraction of 42-84% of total COD. The SS and the XS fractions were very variable, ranging 0-5 g O21-1 and 4-25 g O21-1 respectively, depending on the farm management practices and the storage conditions prior to biological treatment. From these results, the denitrification potential of the piggery wastewaters for biological nitrogen removal treatment could be assessed.

Abstract

An experimental technique was developed for measuring gaseous emissions including ammonia (NH(3)), nitrous oxide (N(2)O) and methane (CH(4)) from broiler houses. This technique included the monitoring of the air flow rate and the gaseous concentrations. NH(3) was determined using acid trap while N(2)O and CH(4) were determined continuously by infrared gas analyser and sequentially by gas chromatography. Moreover, N(2)O and CH(4) emissions were monitored above the litter using closed flux chambers at the end of the experiment. No emissions of N(2)O and CH(4) were observed neither during the growth of the broiler nor above the litter at the end of the experiment. Ammonia concentration varied between 0.8 and 32 ppm in the building. Total ammonia emissions were estimated to 5.74 g N animal(-1) during this experiment. According to this result, ammonia emissions from broiler houses could be estimated to 5.3 kt of N per year in France.

Abstract

A simple and sensitive liquid chromatography method designed to determine the volatile fatty acids (VFA) content in pig slurry sample is proposed. The acids are isolated with a cation exchange column for carbohydrates using an isocratic phosphate eluant coupled with an ultraviolet detector in series. Centrifuged and filtered samples can be injected directly into the liquid chromatographic system. The accuracy of this new liquid-chromatographic chain using spiked solutions ranging between 20 and 5000 mg/L of VFA standard solution varied from 87 to 124%. The precision of the new procedure, expressed as variability, was between 9.2 and 0.6% for a spike solution concentration of 20 and 5000 mg/L, respectively.

Abstract

To optimise the intermittent aeration process for piggery wastewater, the Activated Sludge Model No. 1 needs to be calibrated and adapted to this specific effluent. By combining aerobic and anoxic respirometric tests, biodegradation kinetics of organic fractions in piggery wastewater could be studied. Modeling of the respirometric curves proved that the simplified hydrolysis model was sufficient for piggery wastewater treatment simulation. The hydrolysis constant (K(H)) and heterotrophic sludge yield (Y(H)) were determined at temperature and pH in the ranges 10-40 degrees C and 7-9, respectively. The constants were slightly influenced by the temperature but not significantly affected by the pH, with average values of 3 d(-1) for K(H) and 0.60 for Y(H). The anoxic respirometric tests revealed that the experimental ASM1 anoxic correction factor (eta(g)) was higher than one. This could be explained by the fact that the anoxic and the aerobic heterotrophic sludge yields were probably different. By fixing a value of 0.8 for eta(g), the anoxic sludge yield (Y(HD)) could be calculated at 0.53. A modified version of ASM1 for substrate biodegradation in piggery wastewater intermittent aeration process was proposed, including the separation between the anoxic and the aerobic sludge yields and a simplified hydrolysis kinetic.

Four types of biological aerobic treatment units were identified in France: (1) intermittent aeration without any separation, (2) intermittent aeration followed by sedimentation of aerated slurry, (3) mechanical separation of raw slurry followed by intermittent aeration of the liquid fraction and sedimentation of aerated slurry, and (4) mechanical separation of raw slurry followed by intermittent aeration of the liquid fraction and mechanical separation of the aerated slurry. Among the 26 treatment units built in Brittany (June 1999), three were studied for 8 weeks. This monitoring period allowed us to establish nutrient distribution for nitrogen, phosphorus, copper, and zinc. Between 60% and 70% of the nitrogen was removed in gaseous form. Mechanical separation of the raw slurry (press auger) concentrated 25% to 30% of total phosphorus, 10% of total nitrogen, and 8% to 12% of heavy metals (copper and zinc) into a solid fraction representing 4% to 5% of the raw slurry on a weight basis. Separation of the treated slurry using sedimentation or mechanical separation concentrated phosphorus and heavy metals in the sludge (60% to 90%). This separation could lead to a high content of copper and zinc in the sludge, up to 160 and 340 g ton-1, respectively. Consequently, the use of this product on the farm as organic fertilizer could lead to an overload with regard to agronomic requirements and export is difficult due to the high copper and zinc contents. The clarified supernatant obtained by separation of the treated slurry could be irrigated with a reduced environmental risk. Concerning the biological reactor, the variation of the volumetric load owing to the variation of raw slurry characteristics was identified as the main parameter influencing the treatment efficiency.

International audience; A laboratory scale aeration treatment system was built to study the fate of nitrogen during aeration of pig slurry. For each run evaluated, the nitrogen mass balance was determined including measurement of the nitrous oxide gas Emissions. Abstract

Growing environmental concern led to increased public and scientific attention to nitrogen transfers from animal manure and slurry. Major environmental problems arise from the excessive use of nitrogen compounds. Amongst these are (i) acidification of forests and natural ecosystems through atmospheric deposition of ammonia (NH3), (ii) eutrophication of inland waters and coastal seas mainly by organic N and nitrates, (iii) contamination of groundwater by nitrates and (iv) a contribution to the global warming problem by nitrous oxide, N2O. Tracer methods using 15N stable isotope provide and excellent tool for studying such complex transfers during the different stages of animal slurry management including storage, treatment and land spreading. In this article, we present a brief review of isotopic tracer principles and history through a general description of terms, definitions and assumptions follow by the methodologies developed in our laboratory to label the ammoniacal nitrogen fraction of pig slurry using artificial 15N enrichment. The aim of our studies is to gather information concerning nitrogen pig slurry turnover and to focus on those processes, where major progress is made using the stable isotope 15N. Recent research findings are Presented.

Abstract

EsCo : Elevage et Azote. Les flux d’azote liés aux élevages. Réduire les pertes, rétablir les équilibres; The nitrogen efficiency is the ratio between the output of nitrogen in the animal products and the input required for the livestock production. This ratio is a driver of the economic profitability and can be calculated at various levels of the production system: animal, field or farm. Calculated at the scale of the animal, it is generally low with less than half-ingested nitrogen remaining in the milk, the eggs or the meat in the form of proteins; the major part of the nitrogen being rejected in the environment. Significant gains were achieved in the past via the genetic improvement and the adjustment of feed supply. At the farm level, the efficiency increases to 45% to 50%, thanks to the recycling of animal excreta as fertilisers. From excretion to land application of manure, the losses of nitrogen are very variable depending on the animal species and the manure management system. Considering the risks of pollution swapping, all management and handling steps need to be considered. Collective initiatives or local rules on agricultural practices allow new opportunities to restore nitrogen balances on local territory.

Abstract

During anaerobic digestion, nutrients are mineralized and may require post-treatment for optimum valorization. The cultivation of autotrophic microalgae using the digestate supernatant is a promising solution; however the dark color of the influent poses a serious problem. First, the color of the digestates was studied and the results obtained using three different digestates demonstrated a strong heterogeneity although their color remained rather constant over time. The digestates absorbed light over the whole visible spectrum and remained colored even after a ten-fold dilution. Secondly, the impact of light and of substrate color on the growth of Scenedesmus sp. and on nitrogen removal were assessed. These experiments led to the construction of a model for predicting the impact of influent color and light intensity on N removal. Maximum N removal (8.5 mgN- [Formula: see text] L(-1) d(-1)) was observed with an initial optical density of 0.221 and 244 μmolE m(-)² s(-1) light and the model allows to determine N removal between 15.9 and 22.7 mgN- [Formula: see text] L(-1) d(-1) in real conditions according to the dilution level of the influent and related color. Changes in the microalgae community were monitored and revealed the advantage of Chlorella over Scenedesmus under light-limitation. Additionally microalgae outcompeted nitrifying bacteria and experiments showed how microalgae become better competitors for nutrients when phosphorus is limiting. Furthermore, nitrification was limited by microalgae growth, even when P was not limiting.

International audience; Environmental assessment of municipal solid waste management is essential. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a powerful and widely used method, which implements causal chains (impact pathways) between the studied processes and their environmental impacts. However, in waste management, the method presents some weaknesses. For example, there is no impact category related to odour, whose assessment is nevertheless essential, especially when the organic fraction of waste is concerned. Odour interferes with human welfare and comfort. Sometimes, it can become a nuisance and be described as a "socio-environmental" impact. To integrate the impact of odour in waste management plans, it is necessary to build an odour-impact pathway. The aim of this paper is to present a first attempt to build such an impact pathway up to the so-called midpoint step (i.e. the level of discomfort to human beings). The methodology we developed is based on the cause/effect chain according to the descriptors of the Site Dependent approach. Unlike classical LCA, the classification step is more important and characterization is aimed at computing the characterization factor. The change in this classification step allows for working on the occurrence of odour impacts. To determine impact occurrence, it is necessary to integrate local conditions into odour assessment. This was done using (1) the USEtox model in which local conditions to assess odour impacts are integrated and (2) the framework of a new methodology that takes into account background concentrations. The methodology was implemented in a case study, i.e. by computing atmospheric emission of ethyl benzene during composting (2.93 × 10−2 kg*day−1). The characterization factor for ethyl benzene was equal to 3.02 × 10−3 kg eq. Benzene per kg emitted ethyl benzene. The daily emission of ethyl benzene generated an odour impact equal to 6.6 × 10−5 kg eq. benzene. With that first odour mid-point impact, we paved the way for the construction of a whole odour pathway (going up to end-point impacts or damages). However, several limits were identified such as data availability, the model under use and the use of average daily data which is less relevant than emission peaks. We should also recall that our methodology is not intended for predicting nuisance likely to disturb populations living nearby the facility. Its first objective is to provide an indicator that fits with LCA methodology in order to help local decision-makers to differentiate waste management scenarios based on exhaustive LCA.

International audience; The two major pathways of N and P loss from a plot of land receiving manure to water resources are leaching and runoff. The risks of contamination of surface water by runoff are associated to the sensitivity of the plot to runoff and N, P availability/mobility during runoff which depends on the rate of manure applied, climatic conditions, application technique and soil conditions (humidity,…). N, P loss by runoff following manure spreading could be strong in winter, spring and summer during heavy rainfall. Therefore the risk of transfer by runoff should be defined according to the cover of the plot rather than the application period. However, the likelihood that runoff water reaches rivers is not clearly established as it also depends on various parameters (plot characteristics, distance to river, tillage,…).. The water contamination due to infiltration is also complex with the same rage of factors influencing runoff loss. In addition, leaching loss is also related to nutrient cycling and their transport through the soil profile.

Abstract

International audience; A sustainable way to recover phosphorus (P) in swine wastewater involves a preliminary step of P dissolution followed by the separation of particulate organic matter. The next two steps are firstly the precipitation of struvite crystals done by adding a crystallization reagent (magnesia) and secondly the filtration of the crystals. A design of experiments with five process parameters was set up to optimize the size of the struvite crystals in a synthetic swine wastewater. More than 90% of P was recovered as large crystals of struvite in optimal conditions which were: low Mg:Ca ratio (2.25:1), the leading parameter, high N:P ratio (3:1), moderate stirring rate (between 45 and 90. rpm) and low temperature (below 20 °C).These results were obtained despite the presence of a large amount of calcium and using a cheap reactant (MgO). The composition of the precipitates was identified by Raman analysis and solid dissolution. Results showed that amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) co-precipitated with struvite and that carbonates were incorporated with solid fractions.

L’ADEME et les ministères chargés de l’Agriculture et de l’Environnement ont sollicité l’INRA pour réaliser une étude de l’agriculture française pour déterminer et analyser une dizaine d’actions portant sur des pratiques agricoles et susceptibles de favoriser le stockage de carbone par l’agriculture ou de réduire ses émissions de GES.

Pour intégrer les considérations environnementales à leur décision, les décideurs locaux utilisent des outils d'évaluation environnementale tels que l'empreinte écologique, le Bilan carbone ou encore l'analyse du cycle de vie (ACV). En raison de sa capacité à évaluer les impacts globaux et multiples, l'ACV est l'un des outils les plus utilisés. L'ACV permet d'évaluer les impacts environnementaux potentiels d'un produit ou d'un système en identifiant et en quantifiant les flux entrants et sortants associés. L'ACV est un outil itératif et se compose de quatre étapes : définition des objectifs et du périmètre de l'étude, inventaire des émissions et des extractions, évaluation des impacts environnementaux potentiels et interprétation des résultats. Cependant, l'outil ACV ne considère pas les caractéristiques du territoire impliqué : l'évaluation locale n'est donc pas possible. Toutefois, une telle considération apparaît nécessaire dans un contexte de gestion des déchets ménagers et, plus particulièrement, pour l'évaluation des impacts locaux tels que la toxicité ou les odeurs. En effet, la prise en compte des conditions locales est essentielle pour réaliser une évaluation contextualisée des impacts locaux, enjeux mis en avant par les acteurs locaux et la population vis-à-vis d'un projet d'installation de traitement des déchets. Pour répondre à cet objectif, un travail d'adaptation de la méthodologie de l'ACV a été amorcé et plus particulièrement sur l'étape d'évaluation des impacts environnementaux potentiels en tentant d'intégrer le devenir de la substance émise à cette étape de classification [Potting et Hauschild, 1997]. Cet article met l'accent sur un développement méthodologique visant à évaluer localement et quantitativement la toxicité générée par une installation de traitement biologique. La méthodologie considère le système " source/cible " en intégrant les conditions de l'émission et les paramètres de l'environnement touché en utilisant le modèle USEtox. Le modèle USEtox a été adapté pour prendre en compte les conditions locales et a été utilisé pour obtenir une concentration environnementale afin de construire de nouveaux facteurs de caractérisation. La méthodologie a été mise en œuvre pour une émission de benzène liée à une installation de compostage. Le flux journalier de benzène émis par l'installation est de 3,97*10-9 kg. À partir de ce flux et du modèle USEtox, il est possible d'obtenir une concentration environnementale. La méthodologie proposée nous permet de calculer une concentration d'exposition à partir de la concentration " bruit de fond ", de déterminer l'effet de la substance émise et de caractériser l'impact de cette substance. Pour le flux quotidien de benzène émis, l'impact est de 5,6*10-10 kg équivalent dichlorobenzène (DCB)/j. La méthodologie proposée constitue une première approche quant à l'évaluation localisée de la toxicité. Son application à un cas d'étude révèle quelques points de discussion à approfondir.

Abstract

International audience; Completely autotrophic nitrogen removal (ANR) is based on the combination of partial nitritation (PN) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox). It is a promising alternative for the subsequent treatment of biogas digester supernatants in livestock manure processing and nitrogen surplus scenarios. However, as no full-scale experiences in the treatment of manure digestates by ANR have been published to date, future field studies addressing treatment of this kind of effluent would be of great interest. Some topics to be considered in these studies would be coupling anaerobic digestion and ANR, analysis of the factors that affect the process, comparing reactor configurations, microbial ecology, gas emissions, and achieving robust performance. This paper provides an overview of published studies on ANR. Specific issues related to the applicability of the process for treating manure digestates are discussed. The energy requirements of ANR are compared with those of other technological alternatives aimed at recovering nitrogen from digester supernatants. The results of the assessment were shown to depend on the composition of the supernatant. In this regard, the PN-anammox process was shown to be more competitive than other alternatives particularly at concentrations of up to 2 kg NH4+–N m−3.
