X-ray self-heating is a common by-product of X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) techniques that can affect targets, optics, and other irradiated materials. Diagnosis of heating and induced changes in samples may be performed using the x-ray beam itself as a probe. However, the relationship between conditions created by and inferred from x-ray irradiation is unclear and may be highly dependent on the material system under consideration. Here, we report on a simple case study of a titanium foil irradiated, heated, and probed by a MHz XFEL pulse train at 18.1 keV delivered by the European XFEL using measured x-ray diffraction to determine temperature and finite element analysis to interpret the experimental data. We find a complex relationship between apparent temperatures and sample temperature distributions that must be accounted for to adequately interpret the data, including beam averaging effects, multivalued temperatures due to sample phase transitions, and jumps and gaps in the observable temperature near phase transformations. The results have implications for studies employing x-ray probing of systems with large temperature gradients, particularly where these gradients are produced by the beam itself. Finally, this study shows the potential complexity of studying nonlinear sample behavior, such as phase transformations, where biasing effects of temperature gradients can become paramount, precluding clear observation of true transformation conditions. Here, we investigate the hypothesis that despite the existence of at least two high-density amorphous ices, only one high-density liquid state exists in water. We prepared a very-high-density amorphous ice (VHDA) sample and rapidly increased its temperature to around 205 ± 10 K using laser-induced isochoric heating. This temperature falls within the so-called "no-man's land" well above the glass-liquid transition, wherein the IR laser pulse creates a metastable liquid state. Subsequently, this high-density liquid (HDL) state of water decompresses over time, and we examined the time-dependent structural changes using short x-ray pulses from a free electron laser. We observed a liquid–liquid transition to low-density liquid water (LDL) over time scales ranging from 20 ns to 3 μs, consistent with previous experimental results using expanded high-density amorphous ice (eHDA) as the initial state. In addition, the resulting LDL derived both from VHDA and eHDA displays similar density and degree of inhomogeneity. Our observation supports the idea that regardless of the initial annealing states of the high-density amorphous ices, the same HDL and final LDL states are reached at temperatures around 205 K. The development and technological applications of molecular spin systems require versatile experimental techniques to characterize and control their static and dynamic magnetic properties. In the latter case, bulk spectroscopic and magnetometric techniques, such as AC magnetometry and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance, are usually employed, showing high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, and flexibility. They are based on creating a nonequilibrium state either by changing the magnetic field or by applying resonant microwave radiation. Another possible source of perturbation is a laser pulse that rapidly heats the sample. This approach has proven to be one of the most useful techniques for studying the kinetics and mechanism of chemical and biochemical reactions. Inspired by these works, we propose an inductive detection of temperature-induced magnetization dynamics as applied to the study of molecular spin systems and describe the general design and construction of a particular induction probehead, taking into account the constraints imposed by the cryostat and electromagnet. To evaluate the performance, several coordination compounds of VO2+, Co2+, and Dy3+ were investigated using low-energy pulses of a terahertz free electron laser of the Novosibirsk free electron laser facility as a heat source. All measured magnetization dynamics were qualitatively or quantitatively described using a proposed basic theoretical model and compared with the data obtained by alternating current magnetometry. Based on the results of the research, the possible scope of applications of inductive detection and its advantages and disadvantages in comparison with standard methods are discussed. We describe a method to compute photon–matter interaction and atomic dynamics with x-ray lasers using a hybrid code based on classical molecular dynamics and collisional-radiative calculations. The forces between the atoms are dynamically determined based on changes to their electronic occupations and the formation of a free electron cloud created from the irradiation of photons in the x-ray spectrum. The rapid transition from neutral solid matter to dense plasma phase allows the use of screened potentials, reducing the number of non-bonded interactions. In combination with parallelization through domain decomposition, the hybrid code handles large-scale molecular dynamics and ionization. This method is applicable for large enough samples (solids, liquids, proteins, viruses, atomic clusters, and crystals) that, when exposed to an x-ray laser pulse, turn into a plasma in the first few femtoseconds of the interaction. We present four examples demonstrating the applicability of the method. We investigate the non-thermal heating and scattering of bulk water and damage-induced dynamics of a protein crystal using an x-ray pump–probe scheme. In both cases, we compare to the experimental data. For single particle imaging, we simulate the ultrafast dynamics of a methane cluster exposed to a femtosecond x-ray laser. In the context of coherent diffractive imaging, we study the fragmentation as given by an x-ray pump–probe setup to understand the evolution of radiation damage in the time range of hundreds of femtoseconds. X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) sources coupled to high-power laser systems offer an avenue to study the structural dynamics of materials at extreme pressures and temperatures. The recent commissioning of the DiPOLE 100-X laser on the high energy density (HED) instrument at the European XFEL represents the state-of-the-art in combining x-ray diffraction with laser compression, allowing for compressed materials to be probed in unprecedented detail. Here, we report quantitative structural measurements of molten Sn compressed to 85(5) GPa and ∼ 3500 K. The capabilities of the HED instrument enable liquid density measurements with an uncertainty of ∼ 1 % at conditions which are extremely challenging to reach via static compression methods. We discuss best practices for conducting liquid diffraction dynamic compression experiments and the necessary intensity corrections which allow for accurate quantitative analysis. We also provide a polyimide ablation pressure vs input laser energy for the DiPOLE 100-X drive laser which will serve future users of the HED instrument. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wave packet interferometry with vacuum ultraviolet light has been used to probe a complex region of the electronic spectrum of molecular nitrogen, N2. Wave packets of Rydberg and valence states were excited by using double pulses of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV), free-electron-laser (FEL) light. These wave packets were composed of contributions from multiple electronic states with a moderate principal quantum number (n ∼ 4–9) and a range of vibrational and rotational quantum numbers. The phase relationship of the two FEL pulses varied in time, but as demonstrated previously, a shot-by-shot analysis allows the spectra to be sorted according to the phase between the two pulses. The wave packets were probed by angle-resolved photoionization using an infrared pulse with a variable delay after the pair of excitation pulses. The photoelectron branching fractions and angular distributions display oscillations that depend on both the time delays and the relative phases of the VUV pulses. The combination of frequency, time delay, and phase selection provides significant control over the ionization process and ultimately improves the ability to analyze and assign complex molecular spectra. Time-Resolved Serial Femtosecond Crystallography (TR-SFX) conducted at X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs) has become a powerful tool for capturing macromolecular structural movies of light-initiated processes. As the capabilities of XFELs advance, we anticipate that a new range of coherent control and structural Raman measurements will become achievable. Shorter optical and x-ray pulse durations and increasingly more exotic pulse regimes are becoming available at free electron lasers. Moreover, with high repetition enabled by the superconducting technology of European XFEL (EuXFEL) and Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS-II) , it will be possible to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the light-induced differences, allowing for the observation of vibronic motion on the sub-Angstrom level. To predict and assign this coherent motion, which is measurable with a structural technique, new theoretical approaches must be developed. In this paper, we present a theoretical density matrix approach to model the various population and coherent dynamics of a system, which considers molecular system parameters and excitation conditions. We emphasize the use of the Wigner transform of the time-dependent density matrix, which provides a phase space representation that can be directly compared to the experimental positional displacements measured in a TR-SFX experiment. Here, we extend the results from simple models to include more realistic schemes that include large relaxation terms. We explore a variety of pulse schemes using multiple model systems using realistic parameters. An open-source software package is provided to perform the density matrix simulation and Wigner transformations. Oxygen vacancies in indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films provide a direct route to effectively tune the free electron density and thereby, controlling the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) cut-off wavelength, the wavelength at which the real part of permittivity crosses zero of the permittivity axis. In this report, oxygen vacancies in pulsed laser deposited ITO thin films are systematically tuned using different background gases (O 2 , N 2 , Ar, and He). ENZ cut-offs are observed for the films deposited under He and Ar gases. In contrast, no such cut-offs are observed in the case of other two gases. An ITO thin film deposited under He gas exhibits deeper resonance signal than the one deposited under Ar gas. As expected, no such dip in the resonance spectra is observed for the films deposited under O 2 and N 2 gases. This observation is directly correlated to the change in the number of oxygen vacancies under different ambient gases. A modified transfer matrix method which incorporates surface roughness as an effective medium layer is developed to describe the experimentally observed resonance spectra numerically. Angular invariancy of ENZ plasmon resonance and the difference in absorption values for ITO films deposited under different gases is understood in terms of local field intensity enhancement factor. The study presented here will certainly be very useful in understanding the ENZ plasmon resonance phenomena as a whole. Models attempting an analytical description of free-electron laser (FEL) devices have been proposed in the past. They provided interesting results, leading either to a deeper understanding of the FEL dynamics and to semi-analytical formulae, useful for the preliminary design of self amplified spontaneous emission and oscillator FELs. Most of these models work well until the level of mild saturation. In this paper, we comment on the so-called logistic model and a more recent analysis describing the FEL evolution in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions. Both models are shown to be suited to describe the evolution from the low signal to the onset of saturation. We attempt therefore an extension of these theoretical formulations using a delayed logistic model, capable of including characteristic features like the post saturation power oscillations. Femtosecond laser excitation of crystal materials can produce coherent longitudinal acoustic phonons (CLAPs), which possess the capability to interact with various quasiparticles and influence their dynamics. The manipulation of CLAPs' behavior is thus of significant interest for potential applications, particularly in achieving ultrafast modulations of material properties. In this study, we present our findings on the propagation of laser-induced CLAPs at thin-film interfaces and heterojunctions using ultrafast optical reflectivity and ultrafast x-ray diffraction measurements. We observe that CLAPs can efficiently propagate from a LaMnO3 thin-film to its SrTi O 3 substrate due to the matching of their acoustic impedance, and the oscillation period increases from 54 to 105 GHz. In contrast, in ultrafast x-ray diffraction experiments, we discover that CLAPs are partially confined within an Au (111) thin film due to the mismatch of acoustic impedance with the substrates, leading to an oscillation period of 122 ps. However, interestingly, when examining L a 0.7 C a 0.175 S r 0.125 Mn O 3 / B a 0.5 S r 0.5 Ti O 3 bilayers, no oscillations are observed due to the favorable impedance matching between the layers. Our findings demonstrate that acoustic impedance can serve as an effective means to control coherent phonons in nanometer-thin films and may also play a crucial role in phonon engineering at interfaces or heterostructures. A new diamond anvil cell experimental approach has been implemented at the European x-ray Free Electron Laser, combining pulsed laser heating with MHz x-ray diffraction. Here, we use this setup to determine liquidus temperatures under extreme conditions, based on the determination of time-resolved crystallization. The focus is on a Fe-Si-O ternary system, relevant for planetary cores. This time-resolved diagnostic is complemented by a finite-element model, reproducing temporal temperature profiles measured experimentally using streaked optical pyrometry. This model calculates the temperature and strain fields by including (i) pressure and temperature dependencies of material properties, and (ii) the heat-induced thermal stress, including feedback effect on material parameter variations. Making our model more realistic, these improvements are critical as they give 7000 K temperature differences compared to previous models. Laser intensities are determined by seeking minimal deviation between measured and modeled temperatures. Combining models and streak optical pyrometry data extends temperature determination below detection limit. The presented approach can be used to infer the liquidus temperature by the appearance of SiO 2 diffraction spots. In addition, temperatures obtained by the model agree with crystallization temperatures reported for Fe–Si alloys. Our model reproduces the planetary relevant experimental conditions, providing temperature, pressure, and volume conditions. Those predictions are then used to determine liquidus temperatures at experimental timescales where chemical migration is limited. Short-lived core-ionized neon atoms were investigated by measuring under resonant Raman conditions the Auger decay following the excitation of a second core electron into a Rydberg state. Making use of intense and narrow bandwidth x-ray free-electron laser pulses, the photoexcitation spectrum of the femtosecond-lived Ne + 1 s 0 2 s 2 2 p 6 n p series was characterized. Energy position and lifetimes of the lower-lying Rydberg states were determined and the final state configurations following the decay of the Ne + 1 s 0 2 s 2 2 p 6 3 p double-core hole resonance were partially resolved. We consider two cases of spontaneous anomalous Hall current. In a non-magnetic system with spin–orbit coupling (SOC), the applied bias results in the appearance of non-equilibrium magnetization and an anomalous Hall current. The latter demonstrates non-linear dependence on the applied bias. In a magnetic system with SOC, an anomalous current appears without applied bias. We perform the calculations in the framework of the free-electron model, whereas the common approach to this type of phenomenon is based on Berry connection. We demonstrate that anomalous currents acquire a measurable magnitude for reasonable model parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics Terahertz Free Electron Laser Facility (CAEP THz FEL, CTFEL) is the only high-average power free electron laser terahertz source based on superconducting accelerators in China. The update of the CTFEL is now undergoing and will expand the frequency range from 0.1–4.2 THz to 0.1–125 THz. Two experimental stations for material spectroscopy and biomedicine will be built. A high harmonic generation (HHG) lightsource based beamline at the material spectroscopy experimental station for time-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) research will be constructed and the optical design is presented. The HHG lightsource covers the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photon energy range of 20–50 eV. A Czerny–Turner monochromator with two plane gratings worked in conical diffraction configuration is employed to maintain the transmission efficiency and preserve the pulse time duration. The calculated beamline transmission efficiency is better than 5% in the whole photon energy range. To our knowledge, this is the first time in China to combine THz-infrared FEL with HHG light source, and this experimental station will be a powerful and effective instrument that will give new research opportunities in the future for users doing research on the dynamic evolution of the excited electron band structure of a material's surface. This study delves into the relatively uncharted territory of Above Threshold Ionization in atoms, triggered by intense X-ray radiation fields. At these frequencies, the energy of a single photon far exceeds the ionization potential of valence electrons in atoms and molecules. The conditions we examine are similar to those achievable with current or future free-electron laser facilities. Under such high-energy scenarios, the onset of strong field ionization requires a shift away from the traditional quasi-classical approach. Here, we present an analytical model to characterize how the field-free ionization potential, ponderomotive energy, and photon energy govern the transition to this regime, all accounted for by means of the Keldysh and Reiss parameters. We show that both of these parameters are needed to capture the onset of strong-field behavior due to both bound state and continuum state properties. At higher X-ray intensities, we find that ionization rates deviate from the linear intensity scaling expected from lowest order perturbative processes, corresponding to channel closure and higher-order photon absorption processes. This study explores Above Threshold Ionization in atoms induced by intense X-ray radiation fields, where photon energy surpasses the ionization potential of valence electrons. The authors demonstrate that both the Keldysh and Reiss parameters are essential to capture the onset of strong-field behavior, revealing deviations from weak-field intensity scaling at higher X-ray intensities. The ultrashort and intense pulses of X-rays produced at X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) have enabled unique experiments on the atomic level structure and dynamics of matter, with time-resolved studies permitted in the femto- and attosecond regimes. To fully exploit them, it is paramount to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the complex nonlinear interactions that can occur at such extreme X-ray intensities. Herein, we report on the experimental observation of a resonant double-core excitation scheme in N2, where two 1σ core-level electrons are resonantly promoted to unoccupied 1 π g * molecular orbitals by a single few-femtosecond broad-bandwidth XFEL pulse. The production of these neutral two-site double core hole states is evidenced through their characteristic decay channels, which are observed in good agreement with high-level theoretical calculations. Such multi-core excitation schemes, benefiting from the high interaction cross sections and state- and site-selective nature of resonant X-ray interactions, should be generally accessible in XFEL irradiated molecules, and provide interesting opportunities for chemical analysis and for monitoring ultrafast dynamic processes. XFELs can drive multicore-ionization/excitation processes in the fs timescale of typical core-hole lifetimes in molecules. In this perspective article we propose and discuss a possible technique of in-depth material processing based on undersurface focusing of intense x-ray pulses. Currently, x-ray free-electron lasers can produce such intense x-ray pulses with femtosecond pulse durations, reaching intensities sufficiently high to cause ultrafast melting of a material after a single laser shot. Here, on the example of silicon crystal we will demonstrate that with a proper choice of pulse parameters and focusing parameters, the already existing nanofocusing setup has a capability to focus hard x rays down to several hundreds micrometers below the material surface. This can trigger the required structural modification in the focal point, without damaging the material above. Potential applications of the new technique are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

H2O transforms to two forms of superionic (SI) ice at high pressures and temperatures, which contain highly mobile protons within a solid oxygen sublattice. Yet the stability field of both phases remains debated. Here, we present the results of an ultrafast X-ray heating study utilizing MHz pulse trains produced by the European X-ray Free Electron Laser to create high temperature states of H2O, which were probed using X-ray diffraction during dynamic cooling. We confirm an isostructural transition during heating in the 26-69 GPa range, consistent with the formation of SI-bcc. In contrast to prior work, SI-fcc was observed exclusively above ~50 GPa, despite evidence of melting at lower pressures. The absence of SI-fcc in lower pressure runs is attributed to short heating timescales and the pressure-temperature path induced by the pump-probe heating scheme in which H2O was heated above its melting temperature before the observation of quenched crystalline states, based on the earlier theoretical prediction that SI-bcc nucleates more readily from the fluid than SI-fcc. Our results may have implications for the stability of SI phases in ice-rich planets, for example during dynamic freezing, where the preferential crystallization of SI-bcc may result in distinct physical properties across mantle ice layers. Fractional differential equations (FDEs) involving a family of special functions and their solutions represent different physical phenomena. FDEs are characterizing and solving many problems of mathematical physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. In this article, we establish an integral operator involving the family of incomplete H‐function (IHF) in its kernel. First, we derive the solutions for FDEs involving the generalized composite fractional derivative (GCFD) and integral operator associated with the incomplete H‐function. Several important special cases are revealed and analyzed. The main result derived in this study contains first‐order Volterra‐type integro‐differential equation describing the unsaturated nature of the free electron laser as a special case. Equation of state measurements at Jovian or stellar conditions are currently conducted by dynamic shock compression driven by multi-kilojoule multi-beam nanosecond-duration lasers. These experiments require precise design of the target and specific tailoring of the spatial and temporal laser profiles to reach the highest pressures. At the same time, the studies are limited by the low repetition rate of the lasers. Here, we show that by the irradiation of a thin wire with single-beam Joule-class short-pulse laser, a converging cylindrical shock is generated compressing the wire material to conditions relevant to the above applications. The shockwave was observed using Phase Contrast Imaging employing a hard X-ray Free Electron Laser with unprecedented temporal and spatial sensitivity. The data collected for Cu wires is in agreement with hydrodynamic simulations of an ablative shock launched by highly impulsive and transient resistive heating of the wire surface. The subsequent cylindrical shockwave travels toward the wire axis and is predicted to reach a compression factor of 9 and pressures above 800 Mbar. Simulations for astrophysical relevant materials underline the potential of this compression technique as a new tool for high energy density studies at high repetition rates. Hard X-ray free electron lasers allow new insights into dense matter dynamics. Here, the authors show that a single-beam, short-pulse laser can generate a converging cylindrical shock in a thin wire, providing a new method for high energy density research with improved repetition rates. The advent of free electron lasers has opened the opportunity to explore interactions between extreme ultraviolet (EUV) photons and collective excitations in solids. While EUV transient grating spectroscopy, a noncollinear four-wave mixing technique, has already been applied to probe coherent phonons, the potential of EUV radiation for studying nanoscale spin waves has not been harnessed. Here we report EUV transient grating experiments with coherent magnons in Fe/Gd ferrimagnetic multilayers. Magnons with tens of nanometers wavelengths are excited by a pair of femtosecond EUV pulses and detected via diffraction of a probe pulse tuned to an absorption edge of Gd. The results unlock the potential of nonlinear EUV spectroscopy for studying magnons and provide a tool for exploring spin waves in a wave vector range not accessible by established inelastic scattering techniques. X-rays have been observed in natural downward cloud-to-ground lightning for over 20 years and in rocket-triggered lightning for slightly less. In both cases, this energetic radiation has been detected during the stepped and dart leader phases of downward negative flashes. More recently, X-rays have also been reported during the dart leader phase of upward negative flashes. In this study, we present the observations of four upward positive lightning flashes from the Säntis Tower (2.5 km ASL) in Switzerland. These consist of the simultaneous records of electric current passing through the tower, and electric field strength and X-ray flux 20 m from the tower base. One of the flashes was captured by a high-speed camera operating at 24,000 frames per second, stills from which are also presented. We detected X-rays during the initial phase of upward negative leader propagation, which can be associated with the leader-stepping process from electric field and current waveforms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such measurements are reported in the literature. The obtained time-synchronised data confirm that the X-ray emissions detected are associated with the initial steps of the upward negative leader. The frequency and energy of X-ray pulses appear to decrease as functions of time, with pulses disappearing altogether within the first millisecond of the leader initiation. X-ray emission also appears to be correlated with the maximum current-derivative and the electric field change of leader steps, consistent with cold electron runaway. These observations contribute to improving our understanding of upward lightning, which is a primary source of damage to tall structures such as wind turbines and telecommunications towers, as well as aircraft during takeoff and landing. There are numerous instabilities present in charged particle beams that undergo exponential growth and reach saturation. In various applications, such as free-electron lasers or micro-bunching light sources, achieving saturation is desirable. Conversely, there are applications where these instabilities are utilized as linear broad-band amplifiers for signals embedded in the charged beam. In the latter scenario, the saturation of an instability induces non-linear distortions in the imprinted signal, thereby limiting the useful range of such amplifiers. Accurate evaluation of these instabilities necessitates a complete and comprehensive modeling approach that includes shot noise within the beam. Unfortunately, such modeling is not always feasible or practical. In this paper, we introduce a methodology utilizing the frequency and bandwidth of the instability as key parameters. Through this, we derive an estimation for the range of linear instability growth. Our derivation is conducted in a model-independent manner, making it applicable to a broad spectrum of instabilities. To validate our approach, we employ established and thoroughly benchmarked simulations with a free electron laser (FEL) code as well as self-consistent 3-dimensional simulation of plasma-cascade instability using code SPACE. In this paper, promising but simple schemes are investigated to enhance the micro-bunching of relativistic electron beams for coherent harmonic generation (CHG) by using phase merging effects. In contrast to the standard CHG scheme, two specially designed dispersion sections (DSs) are adopted with the DS-modulator–DS configuration. The phase space of the e beam is appropriately coupled in the first DS, and the electrons within one seed wavelength can merge to the same phase with a matched second DS. Micro-bunching of the e beam can thus be enhanced by a large margin with much higher-harmonic components. Taking e beams from laser wakefield accelerators (LWFAs) as an example, start-to-end simulations are performed to show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed schemes with several configurations. The beam current can be optimized to several tens to hundreds of kiloamperes, and the radiation power reaches hundreds of megawatts in the extreme ultraviolet regime within a 3.5 m-long beamline. The EuPRAXIA EU project is at the forefront of advancing particle accelerator research and the development of photon sources through innovative plasma acceleration approaches. Within this framework, the EuAPS project aims to exploit laser wakefield acceleration to build and operate a betatron radiation source at the INFN Frascati National Laboratory. The EuAPS source will provide femtosecond X-ray pulses in the spectral region between about 1 and 10 keV, unlocking a realm of experimental ultrafast methodologies encompassing diverse imaging and X-ray spectroscopy techniques. Serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) with X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) has revolutionized classical X-ray diffraction experiments by utilizing ultra-short, intense, and coherent X-ray pulses. However, the SFX approach still requires thousands of nearly identical samples, leading to significant protein consumption. We propose utilizing Langmuir–Blodgett protein multilayers, which are characterized by long-range order, thermal stability, and the ability to induce protein crystallization, even in proteins that cannot be crystallized by conventional methods. This study aimed to combine the intrinsic properties of Langmuir–Blodgett multilayers with advanced XFEL techniques at the Linac Coherent Light Source. Since the macromolecule organization can be explored in nano or 2D crystals exploiting the properties of SFX–XFEL radiation that enable the capture of high-resolution diffraction images before radiation damage occurs, we propose Langmuir–Blodgett protein nanofilm technology as a novel approach for direct "on-chip" protein sample preparation. The present study extends previous investigations into Langmuir–Blodgett phycocyanin multilayer nanofilms using synchrotron radiation cryo-EM microscopy and second-order nonlinear imaging of chiral crystal (SONICC) experiments. We also examined the thermal stability of phycocyanin Langmuir–Blodgett multilayered films deposited on Si3N4 membranes to evaluate structural changes occurring at 150 °C compared with room temperature. Phycocyanin Langmuir–Blodgett films are worthy of investigation in view of their suitability for tissue engineering and other applications due to their thermal integrity and stability as the results of the present investigation reveal. Innovative, low-loss, and compact optical systems are essential to meet the experimental requirements of emerging novel radiation sources. The microchannel plate (MCP), a metamaterial-based optical device, shows promising potential for shaping, condensing, and focusing soft x-ray radiation at synchrotron radiation (SR) facilities. This study highlights the impact of MCP optical devices on SR beam condensing capability and their sensitivity to the degree of coherence by investigating the profile of transmitted beams through single and double MCP optical devices. Transmitted diffraction patterns of soft x-ray SR radiation change with energy and radiation modes. At 92 eV, the double MCP-based device affects the beam divergence and degree of coherence more than the single MCP. Moreover, the double MCP device shows potential as a condensing optics at shorter wavelengths, i.e., 480 eV. Experiments were performed at the available end-station of the Circular Polarization beamline at the Elettra synchrotron facility in Trieste, using a high-vacuum chamber with a hexapod system, providing the precise movement necessary to align these diffractive optics. The findings contribute to the development of innovative optical systems for SR and free-electron laser beamlines, paving the way for advanced experiments in spectroscopy, microscopy, and imaging in a wide energy range. Experiments accessing extreme conditions at x-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) involve rapidly evolving conditions of temperature. Here, we report time-resolved, direct measurements of temperature using spectral streaked optical pyrometry of x-ray and optical laser-heated states at the High Energy Density instrument of the European XFEL. This collection of typical experiments, coupled with numerical models, outlines the reliability, precision, and meaning of time dependent temperature measurements using optical emission at XFEL sources. Dynamic temperatures above 1500 K are measured continuously from spectrally- and temporally-resolved thermal emission at 450–850 nm, with time resolution down to 10–100 ns for 1–200 μ s streak camera windows, using single shot and integrated modes. Targets include zero-pressure foils free-standing in air and in vacuo, and high-pressure samples compressed in diamond anvil cell multi-layer targets. Radiation sources used are 20-fs hard x-ray laser pulses at 17.8 keV, in single pulses or 2.26 MHz pulse trains of up to 30 pulses, and 250-ns infrared laser single pulses. A range of further possibilities for optical measurements of visible light in x-ray laser experiments using streak optical spectroscopy are also explored, including for the study of x-ray induced optical fluorescence, which often appears as background in thermal radiation measurements. We establish several scenarios where combined emissions from multiple sources are observed and discuss their interpretation. The primary and secondary fragmentation dynamics of iodobenzene following its ionization at 120 eV were determined using three-dimensional velocity map imaging and covariance analysis. Site-selective iodine 4d ionization was used to populate a range of excited polycationic parent states, which primarily broke apart at the carbon-iodine bond to produce I+ with phenyl or phenyl-like cations (C n H x + or C n H x 2 + , with n = 1 – 6 and x = 1 – 5). The molecular products were produced with varying degrees of internal excitation and dehydrogenation, leading to stable and unstable outcomes. This further allowed the secondary dynamics of C 6 H x 2 + intermediates to be distinguished using native-frame covariance analysis, which isolated these processes in their own centre-of-mass reference frames. The mass resolution of the imaging mass spectrometer used for these measurements enabled the primary and secondary reaction channels to be specified at the level of individual hydrogen atoms, demonstrating the ability of covariance analysis to comprehensively measure the competing fragmentation channels of aryl cations, including those involving intermediate steps. Pump-probe excitation technique using mid-infrared free electron laser and Nd:YVO4 ps-laser from Kyoto University free electron laser facility was implied to selectively excite a Raman inactive phonon mode of a semiconductor single crystal sample. The LO3 phonon mode of strontium titanate was chosen and the MIR-FEL photon energy was adjusted to match the target phonon mode energy, which corresponded to a wavelength of 12.5 µm. Temporal and spatial overlapping of MIR-FEL pulses and probe laser pulses were performed and confirmed through sum frequency generation from ZnS cleartran®. Confirmation of the Raman forbidden mode excitation was achieved through the anti-Stokes hyper-Raman scattering (ASHRS) spectroscopy method. Successful excitation was observed at 5 K, where thermal excitation of all other phonon modes was suppressed. The recorded spectrum showed a signal that was red-shifted from 800 to around 761 cm−1. The broadened line width (FWHM) and the red-shifting phenomenon in the recorded result have been observed due to the restraint of the spectrometer slit width function and the intense irradiation of the picosecond laser for hyper-Raman scattering spectroscopy, which have also led to surface damage on the crystal sample. Because the work function (WF) of the thermionic cathode of an electron gun is the primary factor for determining emission current density, the precise monitoring of the WF in actual operational conditions under high temperatures is essential for tracking the status of the cathode surface. We adjusted a theoretical model of quantum efficiency under high temperatures as proposed by R. H. Fowler to include the final energy state in the photoexcitation process. This modification is necessary for estimating the WF precisely with the measurement results obtained by photoelectron yield spectroscopy using a tunable pulsed laser in the wavelength range from 410 to 709 nm. As the first step of the investigation, we conducted WF measurements of a single-crystal CeB6 cathode, which is employed for the SACLA x-ray free-electron laser. The WF of the unused fresh CeB6 was 2.44 ± 0.02 eV at a high temperature of 836 °C. Our future plans for WF measurements are also discussed below. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In ferromagnets, domain patterns can be controlled globally using magnetic fields or spin-polarized currents. In contrast, the local control of the magnetization on the nanometer length scale remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate how magnetic domain patterns in a Tm-doped yttrium iron garnet (Tm:YIG) thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy can be permanently and locally imprinted by high intensity photon pulses of a hard x-ray transient grating (XTG). Micromagnetic simulations provide a qualitative understanding of the observed changes in the orientation of magnetic domains in Tm:YIG and XTG-induced changes. In the warm dense matter (WDM) regime, where condensed, gas, and plasma phases coexist, matter frequently exhibits unusual properties that cannot be described by contemporary theory. Experiments reporting phenomena in WDM are therefore of interest to advance our physical understanding of this regime, which is found in dwarf stars, giant planets, and fusion ignition experiments. Using 7.1 keV X-ray free electron laser radiation (nominally 5×105 J/cm2), we produced and probed transient WDM in liquid water. Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) from the probe reveals a new ~9 Å structure that forms within 75 fs. By 100 fs, the WAXS peak corresponding to this new structure is of comparable magnitude to the ambient water peak, which is attenuated. Simulations suggest that the experiment probes a superposition of two regimes. In the first, fluences expected at the focus severely ionize the water, which becomes effectively transparent to the probe. In the second, out-of-focus pump radiation produces O1+ and O2+ ions, which rearrange due to Coulombic repulsion over 10 s of fs. Our simulations account for a decrease in ambient water signal and an increase in low-angle X-ray scattering but not the experimentally observed 9 Å feature, presenting a new challenge for theory. The ionization via high-intensity X-ray irradiation can cause structural rearrangements within the sample. The authors observe a new structure in ionized liquid water emerging within few femtoseconds from the initial ionization, characterized via a peculiar partial order on a length scale much longer than normally found in water. Advanced accelerator-based light sources such as free electron lasers (FEL) accelerate highly relativistic electron beams to generate incredibly short (10s of femtoseconds) coherent flashes of light for dynamic imaging, whose brightness exceeds that of traditional synchrotron-based light sources by orders of magnitude. FEL operation requires precise control of the shape and energy of the extremely short electron bunches whose characteristics directly translate into the properties of the produced light. Control of short intense beams is difficult due to beam characteristics drifting with time and complex collective effects such as space charge and coherent synchrotron radiation. Detailed diagnostics of beam properties are therefore essential for precise beam control. Such measurements typically rely on a destructive approach based on a combination of a transverse deflecting resonant cavity followed by a dipole magnet in order to measure a beam's 2D time vs energy longitudinal phase-space distribution. In this paper, we develop a non-invasive virtual diagnostic of an electron beam's longitudinal phase space at megapixel resolution (1024 × 1024) based on a generative conditional diffusion model. The gasochromic properties of WO 3 thin films deposited by electron beam evaporation were investigated, focusing on their structural, morphology and optical changes caused by heat treatment. Moreover, the influence of the thickness and type of catalyst on the gasochromic properties of WO 3 was examined. X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that WO 3 thin films annealed up to 473 K remained amorphous, whereas annealing at 673 K and above, initiated crystallization into a monoclinic structure. Gasochromic behaviour was observed in response to hydrogen exposure, with the most significant changes occurring in films annealed at 673 K with a thin adlayer of palladium catalyst. A gasochromic response of 1.84 was achieved for H 2 concentration as low as 25 ppm. The process of gasochromic colouration was correlated with the changes of free charge carrier concentration calculated based on Drude free electron theory. XPS analysis confirms WO 3 reduction under hydrogen exposure, validating proposed colouration mechanisms. These comprehensive findings offer insights into optimizing gasochromic thin films for various sensing applications. Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is a widely used spectroscopic technique, providing access to the electronic structure and dynamics of atoms, molecules, and solids. However, RIXS requires a narrow bandwidth x-ray probe to achieve high spectral resolution. The challenges in delivering an energetic monochromated beam from an x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) thus limit its use in few-shot experiments, including for the study of high energy density systems. Here we demonstrate that by correlating the measurements of the self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) spectrum of an XFEL with the RIXS signal, using a dynamic kernel deconvolution with a neural surrogate, we can achieve electronic structure resolutions substantially higher than those normally afforded by the bandwidth of the incoming x-ray beam. We further show how this technique allows us to discriminate between the valence structures of Fe and Fe2O3, and provides access to temperature measurements as well as M-shell binding energies estimates in warm-dense Fe compounds. The authors combine differentiable physics modelling and neural networks to extract high-resolution electronic density of states of warm dense materials from resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra. A new method for time‐resolved X‐ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy that enables faster data acquisition and requires smaller sample quantities for high‐quality data, thus allowing the analysis of more samples in a shorter time is introduced. The method uses large bandwidth free electron laser pulses to measure laser‐excited XANES spectra in transmission mode. A beam‐splitting grating configuration allows simultaneous measurements of the spectra of the incoming X‐ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) pulses and transmission XANES, which is crucial for compensating the pulse‐dependent intensity and spectrum fluctuations due to the self‐amplified spontaneous emission operation. The implementation of this new methodology is applied on a liquid solution of ammonium iron(III) oxalate jet and is compared to previous results, showing great improvements in the speed of acquisition and spectral resolution, and the ability to measure a large 2‐D spectral‐time map quickly. Ten to 25 μm‐long‐wavelength mid‐infrared laser has broad application prospects in fields such as military, industrial, medical, and spectroscopy. Currently, lasers capable of emitting 10–25 μm‐long‐wavelength mid‐infrared radiation include CO2 lasers, solid‐state lasers, quantum cascade lasers, infrared supercontinuum light sources, and free electron lasers. This review summarizes the development status of these five types of lasers, providing a detailed analysis and summary of their operating principles, advantages, limitations, and future outlooks. This article discusses the use of ablative fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser treatment for the improvement of acne vulgaris. Acne vulgaris is a common skin condition that can lead to scarring and psychological distress. The current standard of care involves oral antibiotics or isotretinoin, but there is a need for alternative therapies due to antibiotic resistance and side effects. The study evaluated the efficacy of low-energy, low-density fractional CO2 laser treatment for active inflammatory acne vulgaris. The results showed a significant reduction in lesion count and improvement in acne severity with minimal side effects. Photocathode laser pulse shaping is a crucial technology for enhancing the performance of X-ray free-electron lasers by optimizing the quality of electron beams generated from photocathodes within high-gradient radio frequency guns. By precisely shaping these laser pulses, it is possible to significantly reduce the transverse emittance of produced electron bunches. The optimal pulse shape is an ellipsoidal distribution, commonly referred to as the Kapchinskij–Vladimirskij profile. A pulse-shaping scheme utilizing a commercial Yb:KGW laser operating at 514 nm with a repetition rate of 1 MHz and duration of 260 fs has been developed for generating electron bunches with high peak and average power. This study presents the experimental realization of ellipsoidal pulses via three-dimensional amplitude shaping using spatial light modulators at 514 nm, followed by conversion to UV (257 nm) suitable for Cs   2 Te photocathodes. The preservation of pulse shape and a high conversion efficiency during this process are investigated and our experiments pave the way for future emittance minimization for X-ray free-electron lasers. The capability to use extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light for generating transient gratings (TGs) has enabled the study of thermoelastic and magnetic dynamics at the nanoscale, in thin solid samples and surfaces, without the need of specially modifying them. However, the current mirror-based setup for generating EUV TG limits both its extension to the soft x-ray photon energy range and the attainment of few femtosecond time-resolution. Here we propose to overcome these limitations with an alternative experimental scheme based on diffractive optical elements that has become feasible with the current technology. Understanding protein structure and kinetics under physiological conditions is crucial for elucidating complex biological processes. While time-resolved (TR) techniques have advanced to track molecular actions, their practical application in biological reactions is often confined to reversible photoreactions within limited experimental parameters due to inefficient sample utilization and inflexibility of experimental setups. Here, we introduce serial X-ray liquidography (SXL), a technique that combines time-resolved X-ray liquidography with a fixed target of serially arranged microchambers. SXL breaks through the previously mentioned barriers, enabling microgram-scale TR studies of both irreversible and reversible reactions of even a non-photoactive protein. We demonstrate its versatility in studying a wide range of biological reactions, highlighting its potential as a flexible and multi-dimensional assay framework for kinetic and structural characterization. Leveraging X-ray free-electron lasers and micro-focused X-ray pulses promises further enhancements in both temporal resolution and minimizing sample quantity. SXL offers unprecedented insights into the structural and kinetic landscapes of molecular actions, paving the way for a deeper understanding of complex biological processes. Laser-driven compact particle accelerators can provide ultrashort pulses of broadband X-rays, well suited for undertaking X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on a femtosecond timescale. Here the Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) features of the K-edge of a copper sample have been observed over a 250 eV window in a single shot using a laser wakefield accelerator, providing information on both the electronic and ionic structure simultaneously. This capability will allow the investigation of ultrafast processes, and in particular, probing high-energy-density matter and physics far-from-equilibrium where the sample refresh rate is slow and shot number is limited. For example, states that replicate the tremendous pressures and temperatures of planetary bodies or the conditions inside nuclear fusion reactions. Using high-power lasers to pump these samples also has the advantage of being inherently synchronised to the laser-driven X-ray probe. A perspective on the additional strengths of a laboratory-based ultrafast X-ray absorption source is presented. Chirality is a phenomenon with widespread relevance in fundamental physics, material science, chemistry, optics, and spectroscopy. In this work, we show that a free electron can be converted by the field cycles of laser light into a right-handed or left-handed coil of mass and charge. In contrast to phase-vortex beams, our electrons maintained a flat de Broglie wave but obtained their chirality from the shape of their expectation value in space and time. Measurements of wave function densities by attosecond gating revealed the three-dimensional shape of coils and double coils with left-handed or right-handed pitch. Engineered elementary particles with such or related chiral geometries should be useful for applications in chiral sensing, free-electron quantum optics, particle physics or electron microscopy. Copper (Cu), with its ability to exist in various oxidation states, notably Cu(I) and Cu(II), plays a crucial role in diverse biological redox reactions. This includes its involvement in pathways associated with oxidative stress in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies. This paper offers an overview of X‐ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) studies designed to elucidate the interactions between Cu ions and proteins or peptides associated with these neurodegenerative diseases. The emphasis lies on XAS specificity, revealing the local coordination environment, and on its sensitivity to Cu oxidation states. Furthermore, the paper focuses on XAS applications targeting the characterization of intermediate reaction states and explores the opportunities arising from recent advancements in time‐resolved XAS at ultrabright synchrotron and Free Electron Laser radiation sources. This article presents a demonstration of the improved performance of an X‐ray free‐electron laser (FEL) using the optical klystron mechanism and helical undulator configuration, in comparison with the common planar undulator configuration without optical klystron. The demonstration was carried out at Athos, the soft X‐ray beamline of SwissFEL. Athos has variable‐polarization undulators, and small magnetic chicanes placed between every two undulators to fully exploit the optical klystron. It was found that, for wavelengths of 1.24 nm and 3.10 nm, the required length to achieve FEL saturation is reduced by about 35% when using both the optical klystron and helical undulators, with each effect accounting for about half of the improvement. Moreover, it is shown that a helical undulator configuration provides a 20% to 50% higher pulse energy than planar undulators. This work represents an important step towards more compact and high‐power FELs, rendering this key technology more efficient, affordable and accessible to the scientific community. Deflectometric profilometers are used to precisely measure the form of beam shaping optics of synchrotrons and X‐ray free‐electron lasers. They often utilize autocollimators which measure slope by evaluating the displacement of a reticle image on a detector. Based on our privileged access to the raw image data of an autocollimator, novel strategies to reduce the systematic measurement errors by using a set of overlapping images of the reticle obtained at different positions on the detector are discussed. It is demonstrated that imaging properties such as, for example, geometrical distortions and vignetting, can be extracted from this redundant set of images without recourse to external calibration facilities. This approach is based on the fact that the properties of the reticle itself do not change – all changes in the reticle image are due to the imaging process. Firstly, by combining interpolation and correlation, it is possible to determine the shift of a reticle image relative to a reference image with minimal error propagation. Secondly, the intensity of the reticle image is analysed as a function of its position on the CCD and a vignetting correction is calculated. Thirdly, the size of the reticle image is analysed as a function of its position and an imaging distortion correction is derived. It is demonstrated that, for different measurement ranges and aperture diameters of the autocollimator, reductions in the systematic errors of up to a factor of four to five can be achieved without recourse to external measurements. Understanding and controlling the structure and function of liquid interfaces is a constant challenge in biology, nanoscience and nanotechnology, with applications ranging from molecular electronics to controlled drug release. X‐ray reflectivity and grazing incidence diffraction provide invaluable probes for studying the atomic scale structure at liquid–air interfaces. The new time‐resolved laser system at the LISA liquid diffractometer situated at beamline P08 at the PETRA III synchrotron radiation source in Hamburg provides a laser pump with X‐ray probe. The femtosecond laser combined with the LISA diffractometer allows unique opportunities to investigate photo‐induced structural changes at liquid interfaces on the pico‐ and nanosecond time scales with pump–probe techniques. A time resolution of 38 ps has been achieved and verified with Bi. First experiments include laser‐induced effects on salt solutions and liquid mercury surfaces with static and varied time scales measurements showing the proof of concept for investigations at liquid surfaces. A cavity‐based X‐ray free‐electron laser (CBXFEL) is a possible future direction in the development of fully coherent X‐ray sources. CBXFELs consist of a low‐emittance electron source, a magnet system with several undulators and chicanes, and an X‐ray cavity. The X‐ray cavity stores and circulates X‐ray pulses for repeated FEL interactions with electron pulses until the FEL reaches saturation. CBXFEL cavities require low‐loss wavefront‐preserving optical components: near‐100%‐reflectivity X‐ray diamond Bragg‐reflecting crystals, outcoupling devices such as thin diamond membranes or X‐ray gratings, and aberration‐free focusing elements. In the framework of the collaborative CBXFEL research and development project of Argonne National Laboratory, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and SPring‐8, we report here the design, manufacturing and characterization of X‐ray optical components for the CBXFEL cavity, which include high‐reflectivity diamond crystal mirrors, a diamond drumhead crystal with thin membranes, beryllium refractive lenses and channel‐cut Si monochromators. All the designed optical components have been fully characterized at the Advanced Photon Source to demonstrate their suitability for the CBXFEL cavity application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
