Commercially available bioethanol-fueled fireplaces are a potential source of burns and are commonly used for home use. The present study aimed to evaluate the quality of life following burn injuries that were caused by bioethanol-related accidents. Burned patients who were admitted to our burn unit with burn injury due to bio-ethanol fueled fire places between January 2010 and December 2021 were contacted to ask for their willingness to participate in this study. They were asked to answer questions regarding the circumstances of the accident and three questionnaires to capture burn specific and general health related quality of life (Burn Specific Health Scale-Brief (BSHS-B), Short-Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36)) and general information about the accident. Patients were matched and compared to a group of patients suffering comparable burns from other burn mechanisms, which were also admitted to our burn unit at the same time. Of 35 patients that met the inclusion criteria, 19 answered the questionnaire and were compared to 38 patients with other burn mechanisms. There were no statistical differences regarding age (bioethanol: 37.4 ± 14.7 years vs. control: 36.2 ± 14.3 years, p = 0.777), TBSA (9.9 ± 6.8% vs. 8.9 ± 10.4, p = 0.715), and sex (42.1% females vs. 36.8% females, p = 0.882). Most patients in the bioethanol-group reported that they did not follow the manual instructions (68.4%) and that the accident happened during the refilling process (52.6%). There was no significant difference in any subscale of the BSHS-B or the SF-36. Burns related to bioethanol-fueled fireplaces are rare compared to other typical burn mechanisms. However, as they are used for personal pleasure and interior design, psychological impairment following burn may be even more critical. Detailed education on the use of these fireplaces needs to take place in order to reduce the risk of accidents. • The instruction manual but it was not (thoroughly) studied before the first use. Compact and highly performing photonic devices are characterized by non-intuitive geometries, a large number of parameters, and multiple figures of merit. Optimization and machine learning techniques have been explored to handle these complex designs, but the existing approaches often overlook stochastic quantities. As an example, random fabrication uncertainties critically determines experimental device performance. Here, we present a novel approach for the stochastic multi-objective design of photonic devices combining unsupervised dimensionality reduction and Gaussian process regression. The proposed approach allows to efficiently identify promising alternative designs and model the statistic of their response. Incorporating both deterministic and stochastic quantities into the design process enables a comprehensive analysis of the device and of the possible trade-offs between different performance metrics. As a proof-of-concept, we investigate surface gratings for fiber coupling in a silicon-on-insulator platform, considering variability in structure sizes, silicon thickness, and multi-step etch alignment. We analyze 86 alternative designs presenting comparable performance when neglecting variability, discovering on the contrary marked differences in yield and worst-case figures for both fiber coupling efficiency and back-reflections. Pareto frontiers demonstrating optimized device robustness are identified as well, offering a powerful tool for the design and optimization of photonic devices with stochastic figures of merit. Mode division multiplexing (MDM) is currently one of the most attractive multiplexing techniques in optical communications, as it allows for an increase in the number of channels available for data transmission. Optical modal converters are one of the main devices used in this technique. Therefore, the characterization and improvement of these devices are of great current interest. In this work, we present a dataset of 49,736 near-field intensity images of a modal converter based on a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) written on a few-mode fiber (FMF). This characterization was performed experimentally at various wavelengths, polarizations, and temperature conditions when the device converted from LP 01 mode to LP 11 mode. The results show that the modal converter can be tuned by adjusting these parameters, and that its operation is optimal under specific circumstances which have a great impact on its performance. Additionally, the potential application of the database is validated in this work. A modal decomposition technique based on the particle swarm algorithm (PSO) was employed as a tool for determining the most effective combinations of modal weights and relative phases from the spatial distributions collected in the dataset. The proposed dataset can open up new opportunities for researchers working on image segmentation, detection, and classification problems related to MDM technology. An apodized fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is designed to investigate the impacts of side lobe elimination in quasi-distributed sensing for the estimation of measurands (like temperature and strain) to assess the condition of civil structures, such as bridges. The adjacent FBG spectrums may overlap with each other because of the impacts of temperature and strain due to the presence of a high range of side lobes in a quasi-distributed sensing network. Therefore, elimination of side lobes is necessary, by introducing a method of apodization. The sensitivity of the designed apodized FBG is estimated by analyzing the variations in the Bragg wavelength due to the impacts of temperature and strain. The changes in Bragg wavelength due to the measurands can affect the grating period and the grating index of the FBG. The period of the grating and the grating index of the FBG are simultaneously varied by temperature and strain. To measure the physical parameters effectively, it is essential to distinguish whether the changes in the Bragg wavelength are owing to the impacts of temperature or to the impacts of strain. The effect of cross-sensitivity between the temperature and the strain is a key problem in any FBG-based sensing application as both the measurands can affect the Bragg wavelength. In this work, machine learning methods (the support vector machine, K -nearest neighbors, logistic regression, naïve Bayes, decision tree, and ensemble models) are introduced to differentiate between the effects of temperature and strain on a single Bragg wavelength shift measurement. An artificial neural network is used for the predictive analysis of physical parameters, to identify any measurements of potential concern. Real-time monitoring of the state of charge (SOC) of the batteries used in a wide variety of applications is becoming increasingly important, especially given the impetus by the current targets towards "net-zero". In this research, an advanced approach was used involving fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensors that were developed and implemented for the measurement of the key parameters required to ensure optimum battery performance. In this work, one of the biggest challenges to assess (and then map) the data from the sensor system developed is tackled in order to better understand the key parameters of the battery in an efficient and improved way. It is well known that the relationship between the changes in the resonance wavelength of the FBGs used in the sensor system, arising due to change in the electrical parameters of the battery, is complex and dependent on several different factors. In this work, this effect was evaluated by coupling the sensor data to a data-driven regression model approach that was developed for the measurement of the SOC of the batteries used, and this was obtained directly and conveniently from the FBG data. In this comprehensive study, FBG-based sensors were fabricated and then installed onto the battery, which then was subjected to a range of charging–discharging cycles, following which the electrical parameters of the battery were estimated from recorded data using a black-box machine learning (ML) model. Data-driven regression algorithms were employed for the training of the black-box model. The efficiency of the estimation of the SOC of the battery from the FBG-based sensor data was found to be high, at 99.62% (R2 values of Estimated SOC and True SOC line), creating a very satisfactory result for this key measurement. Thus, the work shows the robustness of the FBG-based sensor system combined with the neural network algorithm as an effective way to evaluate the electrical parameters of the battery, which is particularly important, as no physical/electrochemical/electrical model of the system is thus required. It explores the technical and aesthetic changes in wall-mounted fireplaces between the 17 and 19 centuries, emphasizing their emergence as luxury appliances and their sociocultural significance. It mentions the significance of chimneys in the external profile of dwellings as markers of wealth and social status, particularly in regions central to the Ottoman imperial economy and trade.

In this paper, we propose the use of the graphics processing units (GPUs) for acceleration of solution of the H-polarized electromagnetic waves scattering by strip gratings. The approach combines the boundary integral equation method with the Nystrom-type discretization of singular integral equations and is realized with the use of C++ and OpenCL. The elements of the matrix of the resulting system of equations can be calculated independently and, thus, in parallel. The calculation time of the proposed parallelized algorithm on GPU is compared to standard serial algorithm executed on CPU. We considered gratings of graphene strips in vacuum and inside a dielectric slab. The acceleration is up to 35–55 times for the gratings in vacuum and up to 80–140 times for the gratings of 5–20 strips inside the dielectric slab. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article has investigated the contribution of residential wood combustion (RWC) to the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area (HMA) for six years, from 2009 to 2014. We have used the PM2.5 concentrations measured at eight air quality measurement stations. The dispersion of emissions on an urban scale was evaluated with multiple source Gaussian dispersion models UDM-FMI and CAR-FMI, and on a regional scale using the chemical transport model SILAM. The overall agreement of the predicted concentrations with measurements of PM2.5 was good or fairly good for all stations and years, e.g., at the permanent residential station the daily average values of the index of agreement ranged from 0.69 to 0.81, and the fractional bias values ranged from −0.08 to 0.11, for the considered six years. Both the measured and predicted daily averaged concentrations showed increasing trends towards the lower temperature values. The highest predicted annual averaged concentrations in the region occurred in the vicinity of major roads and streets, and the suburban residential areas, to the northwest, north and northeast of the city centre. The average concentrations attributed to RWC in winter were up to 10- or 15-fold, compared to the corresponding concentrations in summer. During the considered six-yearly period, the spatially highest predicted fractions of RWC of the annual PM2.5 concentrations ranged from 12 to 14 %. In winter, the corresponding contributions ranged from 16 to 21 %. The RWC contribution was higher than the corresponding urban vehicular traffic contribution at all the residential stations during all years. The study has highlighted new research needs for the future, in particular (i) the modelling of the RWC emissions that would be explicitly based on the actual ambient temperatures, and (ii) the modelling of the impacts of the most important holiday periods on the emissions from RWC. The article presents a preliminary publication of the collection of Eastern Greek pottery found during the excavations at the ancient settlement Balan, the Ochamchira region of Abkhazia in 2017–2022. The published material is a part of the finds from a complex of ashy soil and a platform with a fireplace discovered at the site. The collection consists of fragments of vessels for storing and drinking wine, produced in the period from ca. 620 to ca. 550 BC. At present, this is the earliest known archaic pottery assemblage discovered in the Eastern Black Sea region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we use transient thermal gratings—a non-contact, laser-based thermal metrology technique with intrinsically high accuracy—to investigate room-temperature phonon-mediated thermal transport in two nanoporous holey silicon membranes with limiting dimensions of 120 nm and 250 nm, respectively. We compare the experimental results with ab initio calculations of phonon-mediated thermal transport according to the phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) using two different computational techniques. We find that the calculations conducted within the Casimir framework, i.e., based on the BTE with the bulk phonon dispersion and diffuse scattering from surfaces, are in quantitative agreement with the experimental data and thus conclude that this framework is adequate for describing phonon-mediated thermal transport in silicon nanostructures with feature sizes of the order of 100 nm. Model refinements for the edge illumination x-ray phase contrast imaging method have been developed to improve simulation accuracy for high energy, polychromatic beams. High-energy x rays are desirable in imaging due to their penetrative power and, for biological samples, their lower dose deposition rate. Accurate models of such scenarios are required for designing appropriate imaging systems and to predict signal strength in complex settings such as clinical imaging or industrial quality assurance. When using optical components appropriate for high-energy x rays in a non-synchrotron setting, system performance was observed to deviate from that predicted by existing models. In this work, experimental data utilizing increasing thicknesses of a known filter material are used to illustrate the limitations of existing models and as validation for the new modeling features. Angular filtration of the cone beam was observed to be the most significant effect; however, specific features of the source and detector are also shown to affect system performance. We conclude by showing that a significantly improved agreement between experimental and simulated data is obtained with the refined model compared to previously existing ones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exceptional properties of the terahertz (THz) radiation lead to growing research on its potential applications in diverse areas. In this work, we study two structures to enhance the polarization selectivity and absorption of the black phosphorus (BP)-based polarizer and absorber at the THz regime. For the first structure, we use the transfer matrix approach to design and optimize optical absorption in a heterostructure comprising BP sandwiched within a linear dielectric media. We model the impact of structural and material parameters and incident wave characteristics on the performance of the designed absorber. In the second design, BP covered metallic grating, we use the equivalent circuit model to show the realization of high extinction ratio polarizer and perfect absorber. The proposed polarizer has a simple structure and a large extinction ratio of around 40 dB. The working frequency of the designed polarizer and absorber is tunable by changing the geometric size of the structure and the electron concentration in the BP layer. We verify the accuracy of our results using the full-wave simulations carried out by the Lumerical finite-difference time domain solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Smith–Purcell radiation (SPR) is a promising way for generating terahertz emission, which has tremendous application prospects. Yet, the conventional SPR schemes generally utilize the Gaussian electron beam/bunch with round cross section (also called a pencil beam) to interact with a planar grating. The shape mismatching between the electron beam and the grating essentially restricts the interaction efficiency together with the radiation intensity. To counteract this effect, we propose to use side-opening cylindrical gratings (SOCGs) to replace planar gratings. Detailed theoretical analyses using the surface-current model and mode-matching method are performed for the first time. A train of premodulated electron bunches is proposed to drive the SOCG, on which the electron bunches are further micro-bunched by interacting with the surface waves. The multi-bunched electron beam then generates multi-color coherent SPR at the superimposed harmonics of the train of bunches. Compared with that from a planar grating, the radiation intensity from the SOCG can be significantly enhanced, indicating that it is a promising way of developing high-power terahertz wave sources. We develop a theory describing two-beam energy exchange in a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) stabilized in the planar state by a helicoidal polymer network. The CLC layer is placed between photorefractive and non-photorefractive substrates and illuminated by two intersecting coherent light beams. An interference pattern created by the incident beams induces a spatially periodic space-charge electric field in the photorefractive substrate. The field penetrates into the adjacent CLC layer and interacts with the charges trapped on the polymer fibrils forcing the fibrils to move along the helicoidal axis. At new positions, the fibrils reorient the CLC director and, therefore, induce a director grating. The light beams propagating across the cell couple within the grating. We calculate the energy exchange between the coupled beams and the gain of the weak light beam. We analyze the dependence of the gain coefficient on the parameters of the polymer network and the CLC and show that it can reach values greater than those obtained in typical solid photorefractive crystals. We report that the transmission of incident ultrasonic waves through an impedance-mismatched brass plate can be drastically enhanced by single-sided periodic gratings. Using Schlieren imaging, we experimentally demonstrated the phenomenon of extraordinary acoustic transmission through the stiff, structured plate. Using a numerical model, we revealed that this phenomenon arises from the resonant excitation of the intrinsic A0 mode in this structure. We discussed the possible application of this structure as a patch to enhance ultrasound transmission in medical instruments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In view of the tremendous emissions of toxic gases and particulate matter (PM) by low-power firewood-fueled fireplaces, there is an urgent need for effective measures to lower emissions to keep this renewable and economical source for private home heating available in the future. For this purpose, an advanced combustion air control system was developed and tested on a commercial fireplace (HKD7, Bunner GmbH, Eggenfelden, Germany), complemented with a commercial oxidation catalyst (EmTechEngineering GmbH, Leipzig, Germany) placed in the post-combustion zone. Combustion air stream control of the wood-log charge combustion was realized by five different control algorithms to describe all situations of combustion properly. These control algorithms are based on the signals of commercial sensors representing catalyst temperature (thermocouple), residual oxygen concentration (LSU 4.9, Bosch GmbH, Gerlingen, Germany) and CO/HC-content in the exhaust (LH-sensor, Lamtec Mess- und Regeltechnik für Feuerungen GmbH & Co. KG, Walldorf (Germany)). The actual flows of the combustion air streams, as calculated for the primary and secondary combustion zone, are adjusted by motor-driven shutters and commercial air mass flow sensors (HFM7, Bosch GmbH, Gerlingen, Germany) in separate feedback control loops. For the first time, the residual CO/HC-content (CO, methane, formaldehyde, etc.) in the flue gas is in-situ monitored with a long-term stable AuPt/YSZ/Pt mixed potential high-temperature gas sensor, which allows continuous estimation of the flue gas quality with an accuracy of about ±10%. This parameter is not only an essential input for advanced combustion air stream control but also provides monitoring of the actual combustion quality and logging of this value over a whole heating period. By many firing experiments in the laboratory and by field tests over four months, it could be demonstrated that with this long-term stable and advanced automated firing system, depression of the gaseous emissions by about 90% related to manually operated fireplaces without catalyst could be achieved. In addition, preliminary investigations at a firing appliance complemented by an electrostatic precipitator yielded PM emission depression between 70% and 90%, depending on the firewood load. An image hiding scheme based on stochastic moiré gratings is proposed, discussed, and illustrated in this paper. The proposed scheme is based on a counter-intuitive optical feature of specially designed stochastic moiré gratings when similar images in the static mode become very different in the time-averaged mode. A soft computing PSO algorithm was used for the construction of stochastic gratings. Complex computational algorithms were required to construct the cover image; however, the decryption process was completely visual. The cover image must oscillate in a predefined direction and at a predefined amplitude (the amplitude of the harmonic oscillation is one of the parameters of the proposed image hiding scheme). Computational experiments were used to demonstrate the efficacy of this optical image hiding scheme based on the stochastic moiré gratings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since 2021, the Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio (CISAAP) in Vicenza and the Department of Architecture at the University of Bologna collaborated for a didactical joint initiative involving students from the Photogrammetry for Architecture course. The main goal was to develop a new teaching approach for architectural education exploiting photogrammetry as a digital tool for joining the Architectural Heritage (AH) documentation with the architecture analysis and design interpretation. Beginning from the new technological advances (semi-automatic workflows and smartphone cameras use), a 'learning-by-doing' didactical method and situated real work problems, a whole systematic process, based on the concept of a digital copy of an architectural artifact as mean to collect and to aggregate knowledge, was developed and inferred to the student. Starting from the designed teaching path, in which the perspectives of the historian, the surveyor, and the designer are blended to get a holistic vision of the architecture, 29 fireplaces by Andrea Palladio were chosen as emblematic case studies. These microarchitectures let students understand the complexities of historic objects and of their digitalization to produce 3D models as outcomes of an acquisition pipeline useful to train them for a future professional career. In 2010 and 2011, rescue archaeological research took place on the route of the Arad-Timişoara highway in site 7, located in the hilly area of northern Banat, in the southwestern part of the bounds of Pişchia commune in Timiş County. It was identified to the east of the European road E69, Arad-Timişoara, and at a distance of 400 m north of the Măgheruş channel. The archaeological site is a successive overlap of settlements from the Eneolithic, the Bronze Age, from the second Iron Age (La Tène), from the ancient period (3rd–4th centuries AD), from the early medieval period (9th–10th centuries AD), as well as from the medieval era (12th–13th and 16th centuries). Archaeological features from the early medieval period are few, only nine out of a total of about 625: six dwellings (locus 83, locus 92, locus 130, locus 150, locus 177, locus 600), two storage pits (locus 149, locus 602) and an oven outside the dwellings (locus 133). The vast majority of the pottery discovered was modeled with a slow wheel, from a semi-fine paste, usually with mica in the composition, but also with pebbles, from which they have a slightly rough appearance. The ceramic was oxidizing burnt, it has a brick and brown color, of various shades. There are very few fragments from gray or black vessels, reducing burnt. Pots predominate in form, but there are also fragments of bowls. There are also redbrick oxidizing ceramic fragments shaped on a high-speed wheel from a semi-fine paste with pebbles in the composition, which gives it a rough appearance. Of course, there are also hand-made ceramic fragments from the pots. We note the presence of clay trays, usually of large and medium sizes (from locus 149, locus 600, locus 602), as well as clay rollers (from locus 150 dwelling). The settlement dates back to the 9th–10th centuries AD, in the chronological range between the second half of the 9th century and the beginning of the 10th century. Of course, the objects cannot tell who their producers and users were, but in the early medieval period populations of different origins and traditions through processes of acculturation gave rise to the communities that medieval written sources recall: Slavs, Bulgarians and Blachii i.e. shepherds of the Romans lived in the territories once ruled by the Avars in the Danube and Tisa/Tisza region (source from the 12th century: Chronicle of the Anonymous Notary, IX).

Early in the morning of Wednesday 5th February 1766, Stanislaw Leszcziynski (Leczinski), Duke of Lorraine and Bar, fell to the ground, very close to the fireplace in his room. He remained in this position for a long time, exposed to the flames, and suffered serious burns. During the first nine days, physicians used topical agents and dressings, associated with internal drugs, particularly quinine. But septicemia occurred after about two weeks. By February 20th, Stanislaw was in a very poor condition. Some stimulating drugs were administered, but he died three days later. He was 88 years old. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vibration analysis systems are used to assess the operational condition of machines and electromechanical components in various applications. This work presents a measurement and feature extraction system that analyzes dynamic strain patterns in signals measured by fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The features were used to identify different simulated operational conditions in an electromechanical relay. The selection of the best feature space in the first approach was performed by statistical criteria that determine the threshold values and frequency bands to calculate each signal's switching time and power spectral density (PSD). These parameters are used in the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm, which presents 98 % accuracy for distinguishing four distinct conditions. Another methodology for extracting features, called wavelet scattering transform (WST), was used to demonstrate that it is possible to achieve even better performance levels. In this work, a Fiber Bragg Gratings,"FBG" had been implemented using a package of Optisystem7 as a compensation component for the spreading of optical pulse width equal to12.5ps transmitted by single mode optical fiber having 10km length and dispersion 16ps/nm.km. Moreover, the ideal performance had been investigated by using the mean value of bit error rate and quality factor for fiber communication system having fiber length 100km and bit rate 10Gbps NRZ. Also, ideal fiber grating have been taken under consideration . The results of this study confirm the ability of FBG to act as a dispersion compensation while the ideal performance occurring at QF= 9.51 & BER = 8.7 x10-22at compensation of -1600ps/nm for fiber length of 100km. In the old times, not so old and distant as we think now, the elders also known as 'the moonstruck' would gather after a long day at work around a fire, a hearth, and as they removed the weariness of the whole day, they would invite the younger members of the family and would share their memories. Stories of their past, stories they heard of or seen with their own eyes, stories they witnessed and stories they only listened to. Stories so old, from memories faded, forgotten, narratives of incidents changed, that connect with events leading to legends, and folk tales. Tales born from tradition and memory. A very old memory, with a plot easy to understand and usually local - a place near the place of those storytellers. Those entertainers of the not so far away world, would produce images in the minds of their audience, colours and forms as they were responsible for keeping that legend and memory alive. The result of that storytelling around the fire was thousands of images. Then the images would turn to words from that young audience that would grow older and become those elder near the fireplace. We demonstrate the optical erasure and amplification of surface relief gratings written on supramolecular azobenzene-polymer films. The reversible photomechanical response of azobenzene-polymer films enables surface reconfiguration through grating superposition, which is implemented through mechanical film translation and exposure in a laser interference pattern. Sinusoidal surface relief gratings could be photoerased and regenerated using laser exposures with interference patterns shifted by half a period. Gratings could also be amplified and their surface coverage extended through multiple translations and exposures at integer-period steps. We report the fabrication of a 2.0 × 2.0 mm 2 surface grating of amplitude 697 nm from an initial grating of 78 nm amplitude through raster scanning and reexposing using a step translation equal to 10 fringes. This article examines Alfred Stevens' Dorchester House dining room chimneypiece (c. 1858–75) in the context of its reception from the 1870s to the 1920s and in relation to two key notions: the Michelangelesque and intermediality. This chimneypiece, which was lauded as a masterpiece in the years following its creation, was consistently described as 'Michelangelesque' during the period under discussion. Through a close analysis of Stevens' works and their reception in this period, and supported by evidence from more recent scholarship on gesture and mediality, I demonstrate how understandings of this term cohere with modern definitions of artistic intermediality. In so doing, I reveal how Stevens' adoption of Michelangelo-inspired traits in the chimneypiece, such as its distinct integration of figural sculptural into an architectural-sculptural framework, as well as its caryatids' dynamic poses, signals the intermedial nature of his artistic practice. Ultimately, I show that the chimneypiece and its caryatids can be understood as expressions of the interrelations that can occur between figural form and the medium as both a mode and material of art. This article presents current research on cooking stone pits in northern Germany and southern Scandinavia and examines their function and interpretation. It focuses on recent findings at the site of Mang de Bargen in northern Germany, which contained pit arrangements in various configurations, including a new circular one. The latest 14C dates from Mang de Bargen suggest that the circular formations constitute the earliest evidence of cooking stone pits known so far. A supra-regional comparison, concentrating on the distribution and dating of cooking stone pits in northern Europe, and an analysis of their content, arrangement, and topographic location allows the author to propose how they may have been used. An article herein considers the development of a fiber-optic sensor system, based on fiber Bragg gratings. Presently, fiber-optic sensors has become world-widely known amongst sensor technologies, used for monitoring engineering and construction structures. The work is linked with developing the system from fiber-optic sensors on the basis of fiber optic gratings, its characteristics, deformation behavior and temperature, acting at fiber Bragg grating by means of computer modeling. The research is focused at the analysis of characteristics and deformation and temperature behavior of fiber-optic Bragg sensor. Fiber-optic Bragg sensor with tilted grating is used for measuring deformation of the object, the strength of which is changed, dependent on the applied force, as well, for measuring and detecting any temperature deviations, influencing at fiber Bragg grating, which might bring to fire and accidents. The incorporation of advanced technologies in agricultural industry procedures has boosted operational efficiency, enabling more effective data collection and analysis. In this study, we developed an "optical tongue" using fiber-optic Mach–Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) built from micro tapered long-period fiber gratings (MT-LPFGs). This tool was employed to collect data related to milk quality, with results indicating a high potential to improve the quality control of dairy products. These advances demonstrate the potential of optical fiber sensor technologies in the agricultural industry and quality control. • Development of an 'optical tongue' using Fiber-Based Mach–Zehnder Interferometry for enhanced milk quality assessment. • Spectral intensity analysis reveals variations across the spectrum, aiding in comprehensive milk quality evaluation. • Principal Component Analysis (PCA) reduces dimensions to 2, capturing 95% of data variance (X1: 78%, X2: 17%). • Machine learning models (XGB, Random Forest, Decision Tree) demonstrate 95% accuracy, efficiently classifying milk samples. • Rapid execution time observed with Decision Tree (0.0055 s) compared to Random Forest (0.8688 s) and XGB (0.1903 s).
