1. Perspectives of a single-anode cylindrical chamber operating in ionization mode and high gas pressure

Abstract: Abstract As part of the R2D2 (Rare Decays with Radial Detector) R &D, the use of a gas detector with a spherical or cylindrical cathode, equipped with a single anode and operating at high pressure, was studied for the search of rare phenomena such as neutrinoless double-beta decay. The presented measurements were obtained with a cylindrical detector, covering gas pressures ranging from 1 to 10 bar in argon and 1 to 6 bar in xenon, using both a point-like source of $$^{210} $$ 210 Po (5.3 MeV $$\alpha $$ α ) and a diffuse source of $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn (5.5 MeV $$\alpha $$ α ). Analysis and interpretation of the data were developed using the anodic current waveform. Similar detection performances were achieved with both gases, and comparable energy resolutions were measured with both sources. As long as the purity of the gas was sufficient, no significant degradation of the measured energy was observed by increasing the pressure. At the highest operating pressure, an energy resolution better than 1.5% full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) was obtained for both gaseous media, although optimal noise conditions were not reached.

Abstract: Abstract The NEMO-3 results for the double- $$\beta $$ β decay of $$^{150}$$ 150 Nd to the 0 $$^+_1$$ 1 + and 2 $$^+_1$$ 1 + excited states of $$^{150}$$ 150 Sm are reported. The data recorded during 5.25 year with 36.6 g of the isotope $$^{150}$$ 150 Nd are used in the analysis. The signal of the $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β transition to the 0 $$^+_1$$ 1 + excited state is detected with a statistical significance exceeding 5 $$\sigma $$ σ . The half-life is measured to be $$T_{1/2}^{2\nu \beta \beta }(0^+_1) = \left[ 1.11 ^{+0.19}_{-0.14} \,\left( \hbox {stat}\right) ^{+0.17}_{-0.15}\,\left( \hbox {syst}\right) \right] \times 10^{20}$$ T 1 / 2 2 ν β β ( 0 1 + ) = 1 . 11 - 0.14 + 0.19 stat - 0.15 + 0.17 syst × 10 20 year, which is the most precise value that has been measured to date. 90% confidence-level limits are set for the other decay modes. For the $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay to the 2 $$^+_1$$ 1 + level the limit is $$T^{2\nu \beta \beta }_{1/2}(2^+_1) > 2.42 \times 10^{20}~\hbox {year}$$ T 1 / 2 2 ν β β ( 2 1 + ) > 2.42 × 10 20 year . The limits on the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β decay to the 0 $$^+_1$$ 1 + and 2 $$^+_1$$ 1 + levels of $$^{150}$$ 150 Sm are significantly improved to $$T_{1/2}^{0\nu \beta \beta }(0^+_1) > 1.36 \times 10^{22}~\hbox {year}$$ T 1 / 2 0 ν β β ( 0 1 + ) > 1.36 × 10 22 year and $$T_{1/2}^{0\nu \beta \beta }(2^+_1) > 1.26 \times 10^{22}~\hbox {year}$$ T 1 / 2 0 ν β β ( 2 1 + ) > 1.26 × 10 22 year .

Abstract: In the TRITIUM project, an on-site monitoring system is being developed to measure tritium (3H) levels in water near nuclear power plants. The quite low-energy betas emitted by 3H have a very short average path in water (5 μm as shown by simulations for 18 keV electrons). This path would be further reduced by impurities present in the water, resulting in a significant reduction of the detection efficiency. Therefore, one of the essential requirements of the project is the elimination of these impurities through a filtration process and the removal of salts in solution. This paper describes a water treatment system developed for the project that meets the following requirements: the water produced should be of near-pure water quality according to ISO 3696 grade 3 standard (conductivity < 10 μS/cm); the system should operate autonomously and be remotely monitored.

4. Cryopreserved Stem Cells Incur Damages Due To Terrestrial Cosmic Rays Impairing Their Integrity Upon Long-Term Storage

Abstract: Stem cells have the capacity to ensure the renewal of tissues and organs. They could be used in the future for a wide range of therapeutic purposes and are preserved at liquid nitrogen temperature to prevent any chemical or biological activity up to several decades before their use. We show that the cryogenized cells accumulate damages coming from natural radiations, potentially inducing DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Such DNA damage in stem cells could lead to either mortality of the cells upon thawing or a mutation diminishing the therapeutic potential of the treatment. Many studies show how stem cells react to different levels of radiation; the effect of terrestrial cosmic rays being key, it is thus also important to investigate the effect of the natural radiation on the cryopreserved stem cell behavior over time. Our study showed that the cryostored stem cells totally shielded from cosmic rays had less DSBs upon long-term storage. This could have important implications on the long-term cryostorage strategy and quality control of different cell banks.

Abstract: Abstract The determination of the effective electron neutrino mass via kinematic analysis of beta and electron capture spectra is considered to be model-independent since it relies on energy and momentum conservation. At the same time the precise description of the expected spectrum goes beyond the simple phase space term. In particular for electron capture processes, many-body electron-electron interactions lead to additional structures besides the main resonances in calorimetrically measured spectra. A precise description of the $$^{163}$$ 163 Ho spectrum is fundamental for understanding the impact of low intensity structures at the endpoint region where a finite neutrino mass affects the shape most strongly. We present a low-background and high-energy resolution measurement of the $$^{163}$$ 163 Ho spectrum obtained in the framework of the ECHo experiment. We study the line shape of the main resonances and multiplets with intensities spanning three orders of magnitude. We discuss the need to introduce an asymmetric line shape contribution due to Auger–Meitner decay of states above the auto-ionisation threshold. With this we determine an enhancement of count rate at the endpoint region of about a factor of 2, which in turn leads to an equal reduction in the required exposure of the experiment to achieve a given sensitivity on the effective electron neutrino mass.

Abstract: Abstract The full data set of the NEMO-3 experiment has been used to measure the half-life of the two-neutrino double beta decay of $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo to the ground state of $$^{100}$$ 100 Ru, $$T_{1/2} = \left[ 6.81 \pm 0.01\,\left( \text{ stat }\right) ^{+0.38}_{-0.40}\,\left( \text{ syst }\right) \right] \times 10^{18}$$ T1/2=6.81±0.01stat-0.40+0.38syst×1018 year. The two-electron energy sum, single electron energy spectra and distribution of the angle between the electrons are presented with an unprecedented statistics of $$5\times 10^5$$ 5×105 events and a signal-to-background ratio of $$\sim $$ ∼ 80. Clear evidence for the Single State Dominance model is found for this nuclear transition. Limits on Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay modes with spectral indices of $$\mathrm{n}=2,3,7$$ n=2,3,7 , as well as constraints on Lorentz invariance violation and on the bosonic neutrino contribution to the two-neutrino double beta decay mode are obtained.

Abstract: Abstract Using data from the NEMO-3 experiment, we have measured the two-neutrino double beta decay ($$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2νββ ) half-life of $$^{82}$$ 82 Se as $$T_{\smash {1/2}}^{2\nu } \!=\! \left[ 9.39 \pm 0.17\left( \text{ stat }\right) \pm 0.58\left( \text{ syst }\right) \right] \times 10^{19}$$ T1/22ν=9.39±0.17stat±0.58syst×1019 y under the single-state dominance hypothesis for this nuclear transition. The corresponding nuclear matrix element is $$\left| M^{2\nu }\right| = 0.0498 \pm 0.0016$$ M2ν=0.0498±0.0016 . In addition, a search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0νββ ) using 0.93 kg of $$^{82}$$ 82 Se observed for a total of 5.25 y has been conducted and no evidence for a signal has been found. The resulting half-life limit of $$T_{1/2}^{0\nu } > 2.5 \times 10^{23} \,\text{ y } \,(90\%\,\text{ C.L. })$$ T1/20ν>2.5×1023y(90%C.L.) for the light neutrino exchange mechanism leads to a constraint on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $$\langle m_{\nu } \rangle < \left( 1.2{-}3.0\right) \,\text{ eV }$$ ⟨mν⟩

Abstract: The possible use of a Spherical Proportional Counter for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay is investigated in the R2D2 R&D project. Dual charge and scintillation light readout may improve the detector performance. Tests were carried out with pure argon at 1.1 bar using a 6x6 mm2 silicon photomultiplier. Scintillation light was used for the first time to trigger in a spherical proportional counter. The measured drift time is in excellent agreement with the expectations from simulations. Furthermore the light signal emitted during the avalanche development exhibits features that could be exploited for event characterisation., 17 pages,14 figures

Abstract: The SuperNEMO experiment will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$), and study the Standard-Model double-beta decay process ($2\nu\beta\beta$). The SuperNEMO technology can measure the energy of each of the electrons produced in a double-beta ($\beta\beta$) decay, and can reconstruct the topology of their individual tracks. The study of the double-beta decay spectrum requires very accurate energy calibration to be carried out periodically. The SuperNEMO Demonstrator Module will be calibrated using 42 calibration sources, each consisting of a droplet of $^{207}$Bi within a frame assembly. The quality of these sources, which depends upon the entire $^{207}$Bi droplet being contained within the frame, is key for correctly calibrating SuperNEMO's energy response. In this paper, we present a novel method for precisely measuring the exact geometry of the deposition of $^{207}$Bi droplets within the frames, using Timepix pixel detectors. To improve the traceability of the unit of capacitance in the SI with a target relative standard uncertainty of one part in 108, a new Thompson-Lampard calculable capacitor is currently developed. This paper presents the latest developments on the alignment of the electrodes and the positioning of the movable guard in the cavity.

Abstract: The Modane underground laboratory (LSM) is the deepest operating underground laboratory in Europe. It is located under the Frejus peak in Savoie Alps in France, with average overburden of 4800 m w. e. (water equivalent), providing low-background environment for experiments in nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics and environmental physics. It is crucial to understand individual sources of background such as residual cosmic-ray flux of high-energy muons, muon-induced neutrons and contributions from radionuclides present in the environment. The identified dominant sources of background are radioactive contamination of construction materials of detectors and laboratory walls, radon contamination of the laboratory air, and neutrons produced in the laboratory. The largest neutron contribution has been identified from (α, n) reactions in low Z materials (10−7-10−4 n s−1 Bq−1) and from spontaneous fission of 238U ( 1.1 × 10−6 n s−1 Bq−1).

Abstract: The double-beta decay of 82Se to the 0 1 + excited state of 82Kr has been studied with the NEMO-3 detector using 0.93 kg of enriched 82Se measured for 4.75 y, corresponding to an exposure of 4.42 kg⋅y. A dedicated analysis to reconstruct the γ-rays has been performed to search for events in the 2e2γ channel. No evidence of a 2 ν β β decay to the 0 1 + state has been observed and a limit of T 1 / 2 2 ν ( Se 82 , 0 g s + → 0 1 + ) > 1.3 × 10 21 y at 90% CL has been set. Concerning the 0 ν β β decay to the 0 1 + state, a limit for this decay has been obtained with T 1 / 2 0 ν ( Se 82 , 0 g s + → 0 1 + ) > 2.3 × 10 22 y at 90% CL, independently from the 2 ν β β decay process. These results are obtained for the first time with a tracko-calo detector, reconstructing every particle in the final state.

Abstract: Prepared for submission to JINST; International audience; Spherical gaseous time projection chamber detectors, known also as spherical proportional counters, are widely used today for the search of rare phenomena such as weakly interacting massive particles. In principle such a detector exhibits a number of essential features for the search of neutrinoless double beta decay (ββ0ν). A ton scale experiment using a spherical gaseous time projection chamber could cover a region of parameter space relevant for the inverted mass hierarchy in just a few years of data taking. In this context, the first point to be addressed, and the major goal of the R2D2 R&D effort, is the energy resolution. The first results of the prototype, filled with argon at pressures varying from 0.2 to 1.1 bar, yielded an energy resolution as good as 1.1% FWHM for 5.3 MeV α tracks having ranges from 3 to 15 cm. This is a milestone that paves the way for further studies with xenon gas, and the possible use of this technology for ββ0ν searches.

Abstract: New Experiments With Spheres-Gas (NEWS-G) is a direct dark matter detection experiment using Spherical Proportional Counters (SPCs) with light noble gases to search for low-mass Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). We report the results from the first physics run taken at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM) with SEDINE, a 60 cm diameter prototype SPC operated with a mixture of $\mathrm{Ne}+\mathrm{CH}_{4}$ (0.7 %) at 3.1 bars for a total exposure of $9.7\;\mathrm{kg\cdot days}$. New constraints are set on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-section in the sub-$\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$ mass region. We exclude cross-sections above $4.4 \times \mathrm{10^{-37}\;cm^2}$ at 90 % confidence level (C.L.) for a 0.5 $\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$ WIMP. Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a new gamma-gamma coincidence spectrometer to measure the radioactivity in environmental samples. This system, called Leda, is made of 2 HPGe and 1 NaI(Tl). The different analysis channels (single, in coincidence or in anti-coincidence) possible thanks to the digital electronics are described. Results obtained with environmental samples are shown. Despite its low efficiency, this method improves the detection limits for all emitters due to its very low background, and thus decreases the counting time.

Abstract: International audience; AbstractA radiochemical method for producing 82Se sources with an ultra-low level of contamination of natural radionuclides (40K, decay products of 232Th and 238U) has been developed based on cation-exchange chromatographic purification with reverse removal of impurities. It includes chromatographic separation (purification), reduction, conditioning (which includes decantation, centrifugation, washing, grinding, and drying), and 82Se foil production. The conditioning stage, during which highly dispersed elemental selenium is obtained by the reduction of purified selenious acid (H2SeO3) with sulfur dioxide (SO2) represents the crucial step in the preparation of radiopure 82Se samples. The natural selenium (600 g) was first produced in this procedure in order to refine the method. The technique developed was then used to produce 2.5 kg of radiopure enriched selenium (82Se). The produced 82Se samples were wrapped in polyethylene (12 μm thick) and radionuclides present in the sample were analyzed with the BiPo-3 detector. The radiopurity of the plastic materials (chromatographic column material and polypropylene chemical vessels), which were used at all stages, was determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The radiopurity of the 82Se foils was checked by measurements with the BiPo-3 spectrometer, which confirmed the high purity of the final product. The measured contamination level for 208Tl was 8–54 μBq/kg, and for 214Bi the detection limit of 600 μBq/kg has been reached.

Abstract: International audience; Spherical proportional counters (SPCs) are a novel gaseous detector technology employed by the NEWS-G low-mass dark matter search experiment for their high sensitivity to single electrons from ionization. In this paper, we report on the first characterization of the single electron response of SPCs with unprecedented precision, using a UV-laser calibration system. The experimental approach and analysis methodology are presented along with various direct applications for the upcoming next phase of the experiment at SNOLAB. These include the continuous monitoring of the detector response and electron drift properties during dark matter search runs, as well as the experimental measurement of the trigger threshold efficiency. We measure a mean ionization energy of W=27.6±0.2 eV in Ne+CH4 (2%) for 2.8 keV x-rays, and demonstrate the feasibility of performing similar precision measurements at sub-keV energies for future gas mixtures to be used for dark matter searches at SNOLAB.

Abstract: International audience; Radon is one of the main potential sources of background radiation for any rare event experiments like neutrinoless double beta decay or dark matter experiments. The Radon Trapping Facility (RTF) installed in 2004 at the Modane Underground Laboratory (LSM) has been running for nine years providing radon-purified air at a level of 10 mBq m−3 for several experiments. The radon suppression principle is based on a radon physical adsorption using cooled compressed air at −55 °C pumped through a column filled with the K48 activated charcoal. After disassembling of the RTF, the 2.6 m high charcoal column has been divided into several layers in order to study with different techniques the dynamic adsorption coefficient (the K-factor) as a function of the depth and the radon spatial trapping profile by measuring the 210Pb activity. It has been demonstrated that after almost a decade of running, the K-factor of the activated charcoal remains constant except for the first few cm of the column. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the mass activity of 210Pb as a function of the depth of the charcoal column exhibits an exponential decay profile. The radon mean retention time τ R of (47.6 ± 1.2) days and the radon mean free path of (28.9 ± 0.4) cm have been derived and found to be consistent at 1σ with the ones obtained from the K-factor study, i.e. from a total independent measurement. The radon suppression factor of the RTF of has been also estimated with a value consistent at 2σ with the suppression factor measured during the RTF operation. Thus, this study has proven the capacity of the RTF to purify the LSM air from radon by more than three orders of magnitude during nine years of operation.

Abstract: The full data set of the NEMO-3 experiment has been used to measure the half-life of the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo to the ground state of $^{100}$Ru, $T_{1/2} = \left[ 6.81 \pm 0.01\,\left(\mbox{stat}\right) ^{+0.38}_{-0.40}\,\left(\mbox{syst}\right) \right] \times10^{18}$ y. The two-electron energy sum, single electron energy spectra and distribution of the angle between the electrons are presented with an unprecedented statistics of $5\times10^5$ events and a signal-to-background ratio of ~80. Clear evidence for the Single State Dominance model is found for this nuclear transition. Limits on Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay modes with spectral indices of n=2,3,7, as well as constraints on Lorentz invariance violation and on the bosonic neutrino contribution to the two-neutrino double beta decay mode are obtained., 11 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: In this work the development results of the TRITIUM project is presented. The main objective of the project is the construction of a near real-time monitor for low activity tritium in water, aimed at in-situ surveillance and radiological protection of river water in the vicinity of nuclear power plants. The European Council Directive 2013/51/Euratom requires that the maximum level of tritium in water for human consumption to be lower than 100 Bq/L. Tritium levels in the cooling water of nuclear power plants in normal operation are much higher than the levels caused by the natural and cosmogenic components, and may easily surmount the limit required by the Directive. The current liquid-scintillation measuring systems in environmental radioactivity laboratories are sensitive to such low levels, but they are not suitable for real-time monitoring. Moreover, there is no currently available device with enough sensitivity and monitoring capabilities that could be used for surveillance of the cooling water of nuclear power plants. A detector system based on scintillation fibers read out by photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) or silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays is under development for in-water tritium measurement. This detector will be installed in the vicinity of Almaraz nuclear power plant (Spain) in Spring 2019. Abstract: Tritium is released abundantly to the environment by nuclear power plants (NPP), as a product of neutron capture by hydrogen and deuterium. In normal running conditions, released cooling waters may contain levels of tritium close to or even larger than the maximum authorised limit for human consumption (drinking and irrigation). The European Council Directive 2013/51/Euratom requires a maximum level of tritium in water for human consumption lower than 100 Bq=L. Current monitoring of tritium activity in water by liquid scintillating method takes about two days and can only be carried out in a dedicated laboratory. This system is not appropriate for real time monitoring. At present, there exists no available detector device with enough sensitivity to monitor waters for human consumption with high enough sensitivity. The goal of the TRITIUM project is to build a tritium monitor capable to measure tritium activities with detection limit close to 100Bq=L, using instrumentation technique developed in recent years for Nuclear and Particle Physics, such as scintillating fibres and silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). In this paper the current status of the TRITIUM project is presented and he results of first prototypes are discussed. A detector system based on scintillating fibers read out either photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) or silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays is under development and will be installed in the vicinity of Almaraz nuclear power plant (Cáceres, Spain) by the fourth term of 2019.

Abstract: Using data from the NEMO-3 experiment, we have measured the two-neutrino double beta decay ( $2\nu \beta \beta $ ) half-life of$^{82}$ Se as $T_{\smash {1/2}}^{2\nu } \!=\! \left[ 9.39 \pm 0.17\left( \text{ stat }\right) \pm 0.58\left( \text{ syst }\right) \right] \times 10^{19}$ y under the single-state dominance hypothesis for this nuclear transition. The corresponding nuclear matrix element is $\left| M^{2\nu }\right| = 0.0498 \pm 0.0016$ . In addition, a search for neutrinoless double beta decay ( $0\nu \beta \beta $ ) using 0.93 kg of$^{82}$ Se observed for a total of 5.25 y has been conducted and no evidence for a signal has been found. The resulting half-life limit of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu } > 2.5 \times 10^{23} \,\text{ y } \,(90\%\,\text{ C.L. })$ for the light neutrino exchange mechanism leads to a constraint on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $\langle m_{\nu } \rangle < \left( 1.2{-}3.0\right) \,\text{ eV }$ , where the range reflects $0\nu \beta \beta $ nuclear matrix element values from different calculations. Furthermore, constraints on lepton number violating parameters for other $0\nu \beta \beta $ mechanisms, such as right-handed currents, majoron emission and R-parity violating supersymmetry modes have been set.

Abstract: International audience; The main limitation in the high-sensitive HPGe gamma-ray spectrometry has been the detector background, even for detectors placed deep underground. Environmental radionuclides such as 40K and decay products in the 238U and 232Th chains have been identified as the most important radioactive contaminants of construction parts of HPGe gamma-ray spectrometers. Monte Carlo simulations have shown that the massive inner and outer lead shields have been the main contributors to the HPGe-detector background, followed by aluminum cryostat, copper cold finger, detector holder and the lead ring with FET. The Monte Carlo simulated cosmic-ray background gamma-ray spectrum has been by about three orders of magnitude lower than the experimental spectrum measured in the Modane underground laboratory (4800 m w.e.), underlying the importance of using radiopure materials for the construction of ultra-low-level HPGe gamma-ray spectrometers.

Abstract: Several efforts are ongoing for the development of spherical gaseous time projection chamber detectors for the observation of rare phenomena such as weakly interacting massive particles or neutrino interactions. The proposed detector, thanks to its simplicity, low energy threshold and energy resolution, could be used to observe the $\beta\beta0\nu$ process i.e. the neutrinoless double beta decay. In this work, a specific setup is presented for the measurement of $\beta\beta0\nu$ on 50~kg of $^{136}$Xe. The different backgrounds are studied, demonstrating the possibility to reach a total background per year in the detector mass at the level of 2 events per year. The obtained results are competitive with the present generation of experiments and could represent the first step of a more ambitious roadmap including the $\beta\beta0\nu$ search with different gases with the same detector and therefore the same background sources. The constraints in terms of detector constructions and material purity are also addressed, showing that none of them represents a show stopper for the proposed experimental setup.

Abstract: Double beta decay (β + EC, EC/EC) of 58Ni is investigated at France’s Modane Underground Laboratory (4800 m water equivalent) using the OBELIX ultralow-background HPGe detector with a sensitive volume of 600 cm3 and a natural nickel sample of ~68% 58Ni with a mass of ~21.7 kg. After preliminary analysis of the experimental data accumulated over ~144 days, new experimental limits are obtained for the 2νβ+EC decay of 58Ni to the 0+ ground state and the 2 1 + , 811 keV excited state of 58Fe, and for the 2νEC/EC decay of 58Ni to the 2 1 + , 811 keV and 2 2 + , 1675 keV excited states of 58Fe. The limits are T1/2(β+EC,0→0+) > 1.7 × 1022 yr, T1/2(β+EC,0→2 1 + ) > 2.3 × 1022 yr, T1/2(EC/EC,0→2 1 + ) > 3.3 × 1022 yr, and T1/2(EC/EC,0→2 2 + ) > 3.4 × 1022 yr. Experimental limit T1/2(0νEC/EC–res, 1918 keV > 4.1 × 1022 yr is obtained for resonant neutrinoless radiative EC/EC decay with an energy of 1918.3 keV. All limits are at 90% CL.

30. Impact et faisabilité de la nutrition entérale chez les patients autogreffés

Abstract: Discipline Clinique. Introduction et but de l’etude Malgre les recommandations indiquant qu’il est primordial d’utiliser la nutrition enterale (NE) lorsque le tube digestif est viable, l’utilisation de la nutrition parenterale (NP) reste la methode la plus utilisee en hematologie. Le but etait d’evaluer la faisabilite et l’impact de la nutrition enterale chez des patients admis pour autogreffe de moelle. Materiel et methodes Etude observationnelle menee dans un CH dont les donnees ont ete recueillies prospectivement. La promotion de la NE a ete decidee en equipe, mais la proposition a chaque patient etait laissee au libre choix de l’hematologue referent qui demandait l’accord du patient. Les objectifs nutritionnels etaient de 30–35 kcal/kg/j. Les donnees cliniques (poids, appetit par EPA, echelle visuelle analogique de bien-etre) et biologiques (albumine, prealbumine, CRP) etaient recueillies entre j-1 et j + 1 de la greffe, puis a la sortie d’aplasie. Un questionnaire etait donne au personnel du service pour evaluer sa perception de la NE. Les resultats etaient exprimes en mediane [extremes] comparees par un test de Mann–Whitney. Resultats et analyse statistique Entre decembre 2017 et mai 2018, 18 patients (9H/9F, âge 60,5 ans [36–70] ont ete traites par autogreffe pour myelome (n = 11), lymphome (n = 6) ou Waldenstrom (n = 1). Une patiente decedee precocement n’a pas ete inclue. Le support nutritionnel etait assure par NE (n = 5), NP (n = 9) ou sans support (n = 4). Sur les 13 patients n’ayant pas eu de NE, 7 avaient refuse la NE, et c’etait le choix du medecin pour 6. Les caracteristiques initiales des patients etaient identiques quelque soit le support nutritionnel recu, sauf le poids initial plus eleve dans le groupe sans support (97 kg vs 65 kg pour NE et 74 kg pour NP ; p = 0,03). L’evolution apres versus avant greffe est indiquee dans le Tableau 1 . Les questionnaires ont ete renseignes par 16 professionnels du service (5 medecins, 11 IDE/AS), 62 % exprimaient une image negative de la NE et 69 % s’estimaient mal a l’aise avec cette prise en charge. Conclusion Malgre une difficulte de mise en place de la NE chez les patients autogreffes en lien avec une reserve des patients et des equipes soignantes, l’utilisation de la NE ameliore le statut nutritionnel et devrait etre privilegiee.

Abstract: The removal of radioactivity from liquid scintillator has been studied in preparation of a low background phase of KamLAND. This paper describes the methods and techniques developed to measure and efficiently extract radon decay products from liquid scintillator. We report the radio-isotope reduction factors obtained when applying various extraction methods. During this study, distillation was identified as the most efficient method for removing radon-born lead from liquid scintillator.

Abstract: Investigation of double beta decay processes (β+EC, EC/EC) of 58Ni was performed at the Modane underground laboratory (LSM, France, 4800 m w.e.). A sample of natural nickel, containing ∼68% of 58Ni and a mass of ∼21.7 kg, was measured using ultra low-background HPGe detector Obelix (sensitive volume of 600 cm3) during ∼143.8 days. New experimental limits on 2νβ+EC decay of 58Ni to the ground 0+ and (math), 811 keV excited state of 58Fe, and 2νEC/EC decay of 58Ni to (math), 811 keV and (maht), 1 675 keV excited states of 58Fe were obtained in this measurement. There are -T1/2(β+EC, 0+ → 0+) > 1.7 × 1022 y; (math), (math), (math). For resonant neutrino-less radiative EC/EC decay with energy of 1 918.3 keV a new experimental limit of T1/2 (0νEC/EC – res, 1918KeV) > 4.1 ×1022 y was also obtained. All limits are at 90 % CL.

Abstract: We report the results of a first experimental search for lepton number violation by four units in the neutrinoless quadruple-β decay of Nd150 using a total exposure of 0.19 kg yr recorded with the NEMO-3 detector at the Modane Underground Laboratory. We find no evidence of this decay and set lower limits on the half-life in the range T1/2>(1.1–3.2)×1021 yr at the 90% C.L., depending on the model used for the kinematic distributions of the emitted electrons.

Abstract: The BiPo-3 detector, running in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (Laboratorio Subterr\'aneo de Canfranc, LSC, Spain) since 2013, is a low-radioactivity detector dedicated to measuring ultra low natural radionuclide contaminations of $^{208}$Tl ($^{232}$Th chain) and $^{214}$Bi ($^{238}$U chain) in thin materials. The total sensitive surface area of the detector is 3.6 m$^2$. The detector has been developed to measure radiopurity of the selenium double $\beta$-decay source foils of the SuperNEMO experiment. In this paper the design and performance of the detector, and results of the background measurements in $^{208}$Tl and $^{214}$Bi, are presented, and validation of the BiPo-3 measurement with a calibrated aluminium foil is discussed. Results of the $^{208}$Tl and $^{214}$Bi activity measurements of the first enriched $^{82}$Se foils of the double $\beta$-decay SuperNEMO experiment are reported. Abstract: The BiPo-3 detector is a low radioactive detector dedicated to measuring ultra-low natural contaminations of 208Tl and 214Bi in thin materials, initially developed to measure the radiopurity of the double β decay source foils of the SuperNEMO experiment at the μBq/kg level. The BiPo-3 technique consists in installing the foil of interest between two thin ultra-radiopure scintillators coupled to low radioactive photomultipliers. The design and performances of the detector are presented. In this paper, the final results of the 208Tl and 214Bi activity measurements of the first enriched 82Se foils are reported for the first time, showing the capability of the detector to reach sensitivities in the range of some μBq/kg.

Abstract: LNE is developing a MEtrological ChARacterization of Nanomaterials (CARMEN) platform to offer a complete supply of main parameter measurements characterizing a nano-object (size, shape, polydispersity, agglomeration/aggregation state, surface charges, specific charges. . . ). Other physical properties such local electrical measurements will be able to be performed on nanodevices. This platform aims to establish tracability routes, define measurement protocols and sampling methods. The uncertainties associated with measurements will offer to users an optimum confidence level. Instrumentation is put in a clean room within a controlled environment (temperature, humidity, vibration. . . ). Thanks to this platform, LNE will be able to help manufacturers and laboratories to meet to the governmental requests concerning the mandatory declaration of nanosubstances as described in the French decree number 2012-232, dated the 17th on February, 2012 (JORF number 0043 on 19th February 2012). Furthermore, this platform will make it possible to support the teams involved in the toxicological investigations linked to nanomaterials.

Abstract: A new low-background spectrometer based on a HPGe detector with a sensitive volume of 600 cm3 is developed to investigate rare nuclear processes such as resonance neutrinoless double electron capture and two-neutrino double beta decay to excited states of daughter nuclei. The spectrometer is installed at the Modane underground laboratory (France) at a depth of 4800 m w.e. The spectrometer background is measured and the spectrometer sensitivity is determined for measuring sources of double beta decay.

Abstract: The radioactivity levels in the air of the radionuclides released by the Fukushima accident were measured at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane, in the South-East of France, during the period 25 March–18 April 2011. Air-filters from the ventilation system exposed for one or two days were measured using low-background gamma-ray spectrometry. In this paper we present the activity concentrations obtained for the radionuclides 131 I, 132 Te, 134 Cs, 137 Cs, 95 Nb, 95 Zr, 106 Ru, 140 Ba/La and 103 Ru. The activity concentration of 131 I was of the order of 100 μBq/m 3 , more than 100 times higher than the activities of other fission products. The highest activities of 131 I were measured as a first peak on 30 March and a second peak on 3–4 April. The activity concentrations of 134 Cs and 137 Cs varied from 5 to 30 μBq/m 3 . The highest activity concentration recorded for Cs corresponded to the same period as for 131 I, with a peak on 2–3 April. The results of the radioactivity concentration levels in grass and mushrooms exposed to the air in the Modane region were also measured. Activity concentrations of 131 I of about 100 mBq/m 2 were found in grass.

Abstract: The NEMO-3 experiment at the Modane Underground Laboratory has investigated the double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$. Using $5.25$ yr of data recorded with a $6.99\,{\rm g}$ sample of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$, approximately $150$ double-$\beta$ decay candidate events have been selected with a signal-to-background ratio greater than $3$. The half-life for the two-neutrino double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ has been measured to be $T^{2\nu}_{1/2}\,=\,[6.4\, ^{+0.7}_{-0.6}{\rm (stat.)} \, ^{+1.2}_{-0.9}{\rm (syst.)}] \times 10^{19}\,{\rm yr}$. A search for neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ yields a null result and a corresponding lower limit on the half-life is found to be $T^{0\nu}_{1/2} > 2.0 \times 10^{22}\,{\rm yr}$ at $90\%$ confidence level, translating into an upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $ < 6.0 - 26$ ${\rm eV}$, with the range reflecting different nuclear matrix element calculations. Limits are also set on models involving Majoron emission and right-handed currents.

Abstract: A reference material designed for the determination of natural radionuclides in solid samples (glass pellets) is described and the results of certification are presented. The material has been certified for 7 natural radionuclides (40K, 226Ra, 228Ra, 228Th, 232Th, 235U and 238U). An information value is given for 210Pb. Radon (222Rn) emanation experiments showed results comparable within participating laboratories, however, the number of data and precision was too low to carry out a certification process. The reference material may be used for quality management of analytical laboratories engaged in the high-sensitive analysis of radionuclides in the construction materials of detectors placed in ultra low background underground laboratories., 13 pages 6 tables, 3 figures

Abstract: Nous presentons les principaux resultats obtenus dans le cadre du projet ANR-TRIMET dont l'objectif etait la fermeture du triangle metrologique quantique (TMQ) a un niveau d'incertitude relative de 10 -6 . L'experience du TMQ consiste a realiser une loi d'Ohm en utilisant les trois effets quantiques impliques en metrologie electrique: l'effet Josephson (EJ), l'effet Hall quantique (EHQ) et l'effet tunnel a un electron (SET). Le but est de verifier la coherence des constantes phenomenologiques K J , R K , Q X , associees respectivement a ces trois effets et theoriquement exprimees en fonctions des deux constantes fondamentales, h et e (constante de Planck et charge elementaire). Cette experience est une contribution importante a une redefinition du Systeme international d'unites (SI). Nous montrons aussi que la fermeture du TMQ permettra la mise en œuvre d'une nouvelle determination de la charge elementaire, e.

Abstract: This paper reports on the current development of a new Thompson–Lampard calculable capacitor at LNE. The goal is to determine the von Klitzing constant RK at a significant level of uncertainty of about one part in 108. The comparison with other accurate measurements of h/e2 serves as a relevant test of validity of the theory predicting RK = h/e2, a decisive issue within the context of the new SI. Conversely, assuming that this relation is exact, the measurement of RK and thus that of the fine structure constant α can be used for testing quantum electrodynamics theory. The mechanical structure of the new LNE calculable cross capacitor has been designed and a new set of electrodes has been fabricated. The assembling of the calculable capacitor is in progress.

Abstract: We present our experimental set-up and discuss the results obtained with the quantum metrological triangle (QMT) experiment. This experiment consists in realizing Ohm's law with the three effects used and investigated in quantum electrical metrology: the Josephson effect (JE), the quantum Hall effect (QHE) and the single electron tunneling effect (SET). The aim is to check the consistency of the phenomenological constants K J, R K and Q X associated with these effects and theoretically expressed with the fundamental constants e and h (elementary charge and Planck constant, respectively). Such an experiment is a contribution for a new definition of electrical units in the International System (SI)

Abstract: The elementary charge e is of fundamental importance in physics. The determination of its value, which is closely linked to progress of the measurement techniques, started in the beginning of the twentieth century and is still on-going. Today, in the frame of the CODATA adjustment, the evaluation of the fundamental constant, e, is derived from a complex calculation and is no more related to a single experiment. But the development of single electron tunneling (SET) devices, started in the early 90s, has opened the path towards modern metrological systems as quantum current sources. Thus a new direct determination of e is possible by implementing an electron pump and the set-up of the quantum metrological triangle (QMT) in combination with the experiments linking mechanical and electrical units. Furthermore, we show how the QMT experiment can contribute to the establishment of a new system of units based on fundamental constants of physics.
