Abstract

Abstract Background There is increasing evidence that folate, an important component of one-carbon metabolism, modulates the epigenome. Alcohol, which can disrupt folate absorption, is also known to affect the epigenome. We investigated the association of dietary folate and alcohol intake on leukocyte DNA methylation levels in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study. Leukocyte genome-wide DNA methylation profiles on approximately 450,000 CpG sites were acquired with Illumina HumanMethylation 450K BeadChip measured among 450 women control participants of a case-control study on breast cancer nested within the EPIC cohort. After data preprocessing using surrogate variable analysis to reduce systematic variation, associations of DNA methylation with dietary folate and alcohol intake, assessed with dietary questionnaires, were investigated using CpG site-specific linear models. Specific regions of the methylome were explored using differentially methylated region (DMR) analysis and fused lasso (FL) regressions. The DMR analysis combined results from the feature-specific analysis for a specific chromosome and using distances between features as weights whereas FL regression combined two penalties to encourage sparsity of single features and the difference between two consecutive features. Results After correction for multiple testing, intake of dietary folate was not associated with methylation level at any DNA methylation site, while weak associations were observed between alcohol intake and methylation level at CpG sites cg03199996 and cg07382687, with q val = 0.029 and q val = 0.048, respectively. Interestingly, the DMR analysis revealed a total of 24 and 90 regions associated with dietary folate and alcohol, respectively. For alcohol intake, 6 of the 15 most significant DMRs were identified through FL. Conclusions Alcohol intake was associated with methylation levels at two CpG sites. Evidence from DMR and FL analyses indicated that dietary folate and alcohol intake may be associated with genomic regions with tumor suppressor activity such as the GSDMD and HOXA5 genes. These results were in line with the hypothesis that epigenetic mechanisms play a role in the association between folate and alcohol, although further studies are warranted to clarify the importance of these mechanisms in cancer.

Abstract

We report the results of heating experiments carried out in an abandoned limestone quarry close to Paris, in an isolated room of a volume of about 400 m3. A heat source made of a metallic resistor of power 100 W was installed on the floor of the room, at distance from the walls. High-quality temperature sensors, with a response time of 20 s, were fixed on a 2 m long bar. In a series of 24 h heating experiments the bar had been set up horizontally at different heights or vertically along the axis of the plume to record changes in temperature distribution with a sampling time varying from 20 to 120 s. When taken in averages over 24 h, the temperatures present the classical shape of steady-state plumes, as described by classical models. On the contrary, the temperature time series show a rich dynamic plume flow with intermittent trains of oscillations, spatially coherent, of large amplitude and a period around 400 s, separated by intervals of relative quiescence whose duration can reach several hours. To our knowledge, no specific theory is available to explain this behavior, which appears to be a chaotic interaction between a turbulent plume and a stratified environment. The observed behavior, with first-order factorization of a smooth spatial function with a global temporal intermittent function, could be a universal feature of some turbulent plumes in geophysical environments.

Abstract

SUMMARY The Mw 7.9 2015 April 25 Gorkha earthquake is the latest of a millenary-long series of large devastating Himalayan earthquakes. It is also the first time a large Himalayan earthquake and its aftershocks were recorded by a local network of seismic stations. In the 5 yr following the main shock, more than 31 000 aftershocks were located by this permanent network within the ruptured area, including 14 362 events with ML greater than 2.5, 7 events with ML > 6, including one large aftershock with Mw 7.2 on 2015 May 12. In 2020, 5 yr after the main shock, the seismicity rate along the ruptured fault segments was still about 5 times higher than the background seismicity before the Gorkha earthquake. Several bursts of earthquakes, sometimes organized in clusters, have been observed from a few days to several years after the main shock. Some of these clusters were located at the same place as the clusters that happened during the decades of interseismic stress build-up that preceded the large earthquake. They also happened in the vicinity of the high frequency seismic bursts that occurred during the main shock. These heterogeneities contribute to a persistent segmentation of the seismicity along strike, possibly controlled by geological structural complexities of the Main Himalayan Thrust fault. We suggest that these pre-2015 clusters revealed the seismo-geological segmentation that influences both the coseismic rupture and the post-seismic relaxation.

Abstract

Low-field magnetic susceptibility χm and effective radium concentration ECRa, obtained from radon emanation, have been measured in the laboratory with 129 soil samples from Nepal. Samples along horizontal profiles in slope debris or terrace scarps showed rather homogeneous values of both χm and ECRa. One sample set, collected vertically on a lateritic terrace scarp, had homogeneous values of ECRa while χm increased by a factor of 1 to 10 for residual soils and topsoils. However, for a set of samples collected on three imbricated river terraces, values of ECRa, homogeneous over a given terrace, displayed a gradual increase from younger to older terraces. By contrast, χm showed more homogeneous mean values over the three terraces, with a larger dispersion, however, for the younger one. Similarly, Kathmandu sediments exhibited a large increase in ECRa from sand to clay layers, while χm increased moderately. The combination of χm and ECRa, thus, provides a novel tool to characterize quantitatively various soil groups and may be of interest to distinguish modes of alteration or deposition histories.

Abstract

Temporal variations of radon concentration, or spatial variations around geothermal systems, are partly driven by the effect of temperature on the radon source term, the effective radium concentration (ECRa). ECRa from 12 crushed rock and 12 soil samples from Nepal was measured in the laboratory using the radon accumulation method and Lucas scintillation flasks at three temperatures: 7, 22 and 37 °C. For each sample and at each temperature, 5 or 6 measurements were carried out, representing a total of 360 measurements, with an ECRa average varying from 1.1 to 75 Bq kg−1. While the effect is small, ECRa was observed to increase with temperature in a significant and sufficiently reproducible manner. The increase was approximately linear with a slope (temperature sensitivity, TS) expressed in % °C−1. We observed a large heterogeneity of TS with average values (range min-max) of 0.79 ± 0.05 (0.16–2.0) % °C−1 and 0.61 ± 0.05 (0.10–2.0) % °C−1, for rock and soil samples, respectively. While this range overlaps with the results of previous studies, our values of TS tend to be smaller. The observed heterogeneity implies that the TS, rather poorly understood, needs to be assessed by dedicated experiments in every case where it is of consequence for the interpretation.

Abstract

Two hourly-sampled time-series of soil-gas radon concentrations of durations of the order of a year have been investigated for periodic and anomalous phenomena. These time-series have been recorded in locations having little or no routine human behaviour and thus are effectively free of significant anthropogenic influences. One measurement site, Sur-Frêtes, is located in the French Alps, with saturated soil conditions; the second site, Syabru-Bensi, is located in Nepal, in a river terrace with unsaturated soil conditions. In such conditions, periodic components with periods ranging from 8 h to 7 days are often weak and intermittent and therefore, even in the presence of stationary forcing, difficult to identify. Two spectral decomposition techniques, Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA), have been applied to these time series and yield similar results. For Sur-Frêtes, weak diurnal and semi-diurnal components are observed with EMD, while SSA reveals only a diurnal component. In Syabru-Bensi, both EMD and SSA reveal a strong diurnal component and a weaker semi-diurnal component. Tidal components M1 and M2 are also suggested by EMD in Sur-Frêtes, while these frequencies are not observed in Syabru-Bensi. The development of such analytical techniques can help in characterising the multiple physical processes contributing to the surface and subsurface dynamics of soil gases.

Abstract

Context: 4H or POLR3-related leukodystrophy is an autosomal recessive disorder typically characterized by hypomyelination, hypodontia, and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in POLR3A, POLR3B, POLR1C, and POLR3K. The endocrine and growth abnormalities associated with this disorder have not been thoroughly investigated to date. Objective: To systematically characterize endocrine abnormalities of patients with 4H leukodystrophy. Design: An international cross-sectional study was performed on 150 patients with genetically confirmed 4H leukodystrophy between 2015 and 2016. Endocrine and growth abnormalities were evaluated, and neurological and other non-neurological features were reviewed. Potential genotype/phenotype associations were also investigated. Setting: This was a multicenter retrospective study using information collected from 3 predominant centers. Patients: A total of 150 patients with 4H leukodystrophy and pathogenic variants in POLR3A, POLR3B, or POLR1C were included. Main Outcome Measures: Variables used to evaluate endocrine and growth abnormalities included pubertal history, hormone levels (estradiol, testosterone, stimulated LH and FSH, stimulated GH, IGF-I, prolactin, ACTH, cortisol, TSH, and T4), and height and head circumference charts. Results: The most common endocrine abnormalities were delayed puberty (57/74; 77% overall, 64% in males, 89% in females) and short stature (57/93; 61%), when evaluated according to physician assessment. Abnormal thyroid function was reported in 22% (13/59) of patients. Conclusions: Our results confirm pubertal abnormalities and short stature are the most common endocrine features seen in 4H leukodystrophy. However, we noted that endocrine abnormalities are typically underinvestigated in this patient population. A prospective study is required to formulate evidence-based recommendations for management of the endocrine manifestations of this disorder. © 2020 The Author(s) 2020. Abstract

International audience; This paper presents the impact of cryogenic temperatures, down to 50 K, on the single-event transient (SET) sensitivity of two readout circuits of infrared image sensor designed by Sofradir. Experimental SETs data obtained under heavy ions at the Université Catholique de Louvain la Neuve facility are described, and the temperature impact on the SET cross sections is presented. The analysis of experimental sensitivity trends is completed by means of MUSCA SEP3 tool.

Abstract

Silicon transistor test vehicles used in infrared detectors were exposed to total dose at cryogenic temperatures. We present the degradation of the leakage current and threshold voltage of different transistor topologies at different dose rates and temperatures. The results show that the degradation occurs in the lateral parts of the transistors. Moreover, a different degradation was observed at 83 and 108 K. The higher temperature corresponds to the higher degradation; this can be explained by a more efficient hole transport process at these temperature. Measurements during the warming process of the devices show that a competition exists between the hole transport and their annealing, suggesting that a worst case of degradation could be found between nitrogen and room temperature.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents a physical investigation of the mechanisms induced by the low temperature on Single-Event Latchup in CMOS inverters for a range of technology nodes (250 nm from Sofradir and 180 nm from IBM). For the first time, the TCAD simulations show a good agreement of Latchup characteristics with the experimental measurements at cryogenic temperatures. Additionally, a more robust technology provided by Sofradir was demonstrated.

Abstract

Background and Aims An association between the inflammatory reactions estimated by several biomarkers and organ dysfunction has been reported in brain-dead organ donors (BDOD). Procalcitonin (PCT), a biomarker of inflammation due to bacterial infection, is increased among BDOD. However, is not known whether infection changes PCT values in BDOD. Materials and Methods We retrospectively analyzed 82 BDOD including several demographic and clinical parameters, bacterial culture results, antibiotics prescription, and plasma values of PCT measured before organ harvesting. Infection was diagnosed to be either a positive bacterial culture (restricted definition) and/or prescription of antibiotics (extended definition). Results The median PCT value was 1.5 (interquartile range [IQR], 0.4 to 6.9; range, 0 to 526 ng/mL; n = 82). Thirty-eight (46%) and 24 (29%) patients had PCT values >2 ng/mL and >5 ng/mL, respectively. Median PCT values among infected (1.18; IQR, 0.27 to 6.55 ng/mL) versus noninfected (1.57; IQR, 0.53 to 7.15 ng/mL) BDOD (restricted definition) were not different ( P = .36). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve using PCT to predict infection (restricted definition) was 0.52. Specificity of PCT to predict infection was above 80% at PCT values >9 ng/mL. Conclusion Our results confirmed PCT values are increased in BDOD, suggesting that this was not related to an infectious cause (whatever definition was used) unless PCT values are high.

International audience; Assessment of design implications due to degradation of CMOS devices is increasingly required in the latest technologies. This paper presents selected topics relevant to realize an efficient design-in reliability methodology in the latest generation CMOS technologies. NBTI is discussed in terms of characterization using On-The-Fly (OTF) methodology. Extension of OTF method is discussed using bias patterns to gain insights into NBTI under analog operation. A reliability simulation methodology is discussed against requirements for optimization and integration within an existing design flow. The features of this methodology are illustrated using some simple design examples.

Abstract

International audience; Permanent damage induced by Channel Hot-Carrier (CHC) injections have been distinguished from the charge-discharge of near-interface traps in ultra-thin gate-oxide (1.6nm) MOSFETs. It is shown that usual DC accelerating techniques mostly devoted to CHC damage at large voltage conditions cannot be used alone for low supply voltage (VDD= 1V) MOSFETs. This arises from the charging of slow traps which induces a worst-case of damage which is relaxing in different ways depending on the discharging bias and cold phases. This is particularly more severe under hole injections in P-channel than under electron injections in N-Channel MOSFETs in relation to the smaller mobility of holes and to the gate-oxide nitridation which induces deep traps from the oxide valence band. The true effects of the distinct damage and relaxations are further analyzed using AC stresses which are required for the worst-case determination in advanced logic circuits. This is further evidenced by the determination of the effective quasi-static time factors dependent on the alternated damaging, discharging, and relaxing periods involved in ultra-thin gate-oxide MOSFETs operating at low voltage.

Abstract

Turbulent convection at aspect ratios from 0.06 to 2 is investigated in the laboratory with evaporation experiments from vertical cylinders having different diameters and liquid levels. With alcohol, only diffusive evaporation takes place. With water, for small diameters, evaporation proceeds by diffusion whereas convective evaporation develops when the diameter is increased. This onset can be effectively interpreted in terms of a viscous sidewall boundary layer, whose thickness δ varies with respect to the available height h according to δ/h = 3.4 Ra-0.28±0.01 versus Rayleigh number Ra. The Sherwood number Sh, analog of the Nusselt number, exhibits a power law variation Sh = 0.6 Ra0.27±0.02 for Ra varying from 104 to 3 ×108. The scaling observed in this case of an open boundary is thus similar to the scaling measured in confined Rayleigh-Benard convection.

International audience; This paper gives an insight into the degradation mechanisms during negative and positive bias temperature instabilities in advanced CMOS technology with a 2-nm gate oxide. We focus on generated interface traps and oxide traps to distinguish their dependencies and effects on usual transistor parameters. negative bias temperature instability (NBTI) and positive bias temperature instability in both NMOS and PMOS have been compared and a possible explanation for all configurations has been suggested. Recovery and temperature effect under NBTI were also investigated showing different behaviors of the two components.

Abstract

Resume Objectifs. – La penurie de greffons limite l’augmentation du nombre de transplantations cardiaques et ce malgre l’augmentation du nombre de donneurs d’organe. Les criteres de selection des greffons cardiaques ne sont pas entierement standardises. L’objectif de cette etude a ete d’analyser les criteres qui participent a la decision de prelever un greffon cardiaque. Type d’etude. – Descriptive, retrospective. Patients et methodes. – Les parametres cliniques, les causes initiales ayant conduit a l’etat de mort encephalique (EME), les doses maximales de catecholamines, plusieurs marqueurs biochimiques d’ischemie/necrose myocardique ainsi que des criteres echocardiographiques ont ete analyses a partir d’une base de donnees prospectives. Des analyses univariees et multivariees (regression logistique) ont ete effectuees avec la variable « cœur preleve » comme variable dependante et les variables sus-citees comme variables independantes. Resultats. – Parmi les 180 patients consecutifs admis en EME entre le 1 er octobre 1998 et le 31 decembre 2000, 112 ont donne au moins un organe dont 59 patients (39 hommes et 20 femmes) avaient ete preselectionnes comme donneurs cardiaques. Seulement 44 cœurs ont ete preleves. En regression logistique, les facteurs predictifs de prelevement etaient le sexe masculin, l’absence d’anomalies de la cinetique segmentaire du ventricule gauche, les faibles doses de noradrenaline, les faibles concentrations seriques de troponine Ic. Conclusion. – Apres une phase de preselection, la decision finale de prelever le cœur chez un donneur d’organe est fondee sur plusieurs criteres. A partir de ces resultats, une etude prospective multicentrique pourrait aboutir a la construction d’un score permettant de mieux definir les criteres de selection de greffons cardiaques.

Abstract

From more than 175 000 hadronic Z decays observed with the ALEPH detector at LEP, we select 823 events with pairs of leptons in the final state. From these we measure χ , the probability thata b hadron which is observed to decay originated as a b hadron. We find χ =0.132 −0.026 +0.027 .

Abstract

The average lifetime of B hadrons has been measured by the ALEPH experiment at LEP. Events containing B hadrons are selected by the identification of leptons with high transverse momentum in hadronic Z decays, and the lifetime is extracted from a fit to the impact parameter distribution of the lepton tracks. From a sample of 1.7×105 hadronic Z decays a lifetime of 1.29±0.06±0.10 ps is measured.

Abstract

Resume Le dosage de la CRP est une analyse desormais realisee en routine dans de tres nombreux laboratoires de biologie medicale car elle est devenue un des marqueurs biologiques systematiques de l'inflammation. Nous presentons une evaluation du dosage de la CRP avec un reactif Randox ® sur l'automate RxL ® de la societe Dade-Behring ® . Les parametres suivants ont ete determines : precision (repetabilite et reproductibilite), domaine de mesure (limites de detection et de linearite), interferences liees a la bilirubine, a l'hemolyse et a la turbidite et correlation avec, d'une part, le nouveau reactif de Dade-Behring ® , « R-CRP a et d'autre part, un reactif de dosage Randox ® sur l'automate AU600 ® de la societe Olympus ® . Les resultats trouves sont satisfaisants et il existe un avantage economique en faveur du reactif Randox ® . En revanche, ce reactif presente une limite de detection qui ne permet pas la detection d'un risque cardiovasculaire et restreint son usage a l'etude de l'inflammation.

Abstract

Resume Introduction Les patients en insuffisance renale chronique terminale sont particulierement a risque de tuberculose, en particulier peritoneale. Le diagnostic microbiologique est difficile dans bon nombre de cas. Les analyses biochimiques, en particulier le dosage de l'activite de l'adenosine deaminase dans l'ascite peuvent aider au diagnostic. Fait clinique Nous rapportons le cas d'une tuberculose peritoneale chez un patient dialyse, chez qui le traitement a ete instaure sur la base d'un dosage d'adenosine deaminase eleve dans le liquide peritoneal. L'evolution a ete tres favorable, avec un recul de trois ans. Discussion A notre connaissance, il existe tres peu de donnees concernant l'utilite du dosage d'adenosine deaminase dans l'ascite chez le patient en insuffisance renale chronique terminale. Notre observation plaide en faveur de l'utilite de ce dosage dans l'ascite, chez le patient dialyse, pour aider au diagnostic de tuberculose peritoneale.

Abstract

Summary Dextrorotatory and levorotatory antipodes (RU 40518, RU 40519) of the non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) racemic tiaprofenic acid (RU 15060) have been prepared by means of a new patented stereoconversion process. Unlike other arylpropionic acids, their absolute configurations, determined by circular dichroism, were R for the dextrorotatory enantiomer and S for the levorotatory enantiomer. Pharmacological evaluation showed that R-(+)-RU 40518 displays a potent in vitro inhibition of guinea-pig polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) cyclooxygenase and in vivo a better analgesic activity than its racemate or S-(-)-RU 40519 on the writhing test in the rat. Racemate and enantiomers showed similar antiinflammatory activity in carrageenan-induced paw oedema in the rat. These findings indicate that unlike other NSAIDs, the dextrorotatory enantiomer R is the active antipode for tiaprofenic acid.

Abstract

Since 1997, Sofradir has been working with Thales Research & Technologies (TRT) to develop and produce Quantum Well Infrared Photodetectors (QWIP) as a complementary offer with Mercury Cadmium Telluride (MCT) Long Wave (LW) detectors, to provide large LW staring arrays. Thanks to the low dark current technology developed by TRT, the QWIP detectors can be operated at FPA temperature above 73K, enabling the production of compact Infrared (IR) cameras thanks to the use of compact microcoolers. The TV/2 VEGA-LW detector (25μm pitch 384×288 Integrated Detector Dewar Assembly (IDDCA)) is integrated in the Catherine-XP thermal imager from Thales Optronique SA (TOSA). To date, more than one thousand units have been manufactured. The TV SIRIUS-LW detector (20μm pitch 640×512 IDDCA) is integrated in the Catherine-MP thermal imager from Thales Optronics Ltd. (TOL). To date, several hundreds of units have been manufactured. We will discuss in this paper statistical results of these productions and our latest reliability study results, which highlight the stability of the TRT QWIP technology. Thanks to this mature technology, TRT and Sofradir have been able to increase the QWIP wafer size from 3 inches to 4 inches, without any impact on yields and FPA performances. A dual-band Mid Wave-Long Wave (MW-LW) QWIP detector (25μm pitch 384×288 IDDCA) is currently under development. We will present in this paper its latest results.

Abstract

We determine the strong coupling ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\mathit{s}}$ from a comprehensive study of energy-energy correlations (EEC's) and their asymmetry (AEEC's) in hadronic decays of ${\mathit{Z}}^{0}$ bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. The data are compared with all four available predictions of QCD calculated up to O(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\mathit{s}}^{2}$) in perturbation theory, and also with a resummed calculation matched to all four of these calculations. We find large discrepancies between ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\mathit{s}}$ values extracted from the different O(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\mathit{s}}^{2}$) calculations. We also find a large renormalization scale ambiguity in ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\mathit{s}}$ determined from the EEC's using the O(${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\mathit{s}}^{2}$) calculations; this ambiguity is reduced in the case of the AEEC's and is very small when the matched calculations are used. Averaging over all calculations, and over the EEC and AEEC results, we obtain ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}_{\mathit{s}}$(${\mathit{M}}_{\mathit{Z}}^{2}$)=0.${124}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}0.004}^{+0.003}$ (expt.) \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.009 (theory).

Abstract

Using an impact parameter tag to select an enriched sample of [ital Z][sup 0][r arrow][ital b[bar b]] events, we have measured the difference between the average charged multiplicity of [ital Z][sup 0][r arrow][ital b[bar b]] and [ital Z][sup 0][r arrow] hadrons to be [ital [bar n]][sub [ital b]][minus][ital [bar n]][sub had]=2.24[plus minus]0.30 ( stat )[plus minus]0.33 ( syst ) tracks per event. From this, we have derived [ital [bar n]][sub [ital b]][minus][ital [bar n]][sub [ital u][ital d][ital s]]=3.31[plus minus]0.41[plus minus]0.79. Comparing this measurement with those at lower center-of-mass energies, we find no evidence that [ital [bar n]][sub [ital b]][minus][ital [bar n]][sub [ital u][ital d][ital s]] depends on energy. This result is in agreement with a precise prediction of perturbative QCD, and supports the notion that QCD remains asymptotically free down to the scale [ital M][sub [ital b]][sup 2].

Abstract

We present the first measurement of the left-right cross section asymmetry (${\mathit{A}}_{\mathit{L}\mathit{R}}$) for Z boson production by ${\mathit{e}}^{+}$${\mathit{e}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ collisions. The measurement was performed at a center-of-mass energy of 91.55 GeV with the SLD detector at the SLAC Linear Collider which utilized a longitudinally polarized electron beam. The average beam polarization was (22.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6)%. Using a sample of 10 224 Z decays, we measure ${\mathit{A}}_{\mathit{L}\mathit{R}}$ to be 0.100\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.044(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.004(syst), which determines the effective weak mixing angle to be ${\mathrm{sin}}^{2}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\theta}}}_{\mathit{W}}^{\mathit{e}\mathit{f}\mathit{f}}$=0.2378 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0056(stat)\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.0005(syst).

34. Évaluation et traitement du déficit en fer en chirurgie digestive carcinologique. Impact sur la transfusion postopératoire

Abstract

Introduction Les interventions de chirurgie digestive carcinologique sont a risque de transfusion sanguine postoperatoire. Celle-ci est associee a une morbidite ayant un impact sur l’evolution postoperatoire et de la maladie. Les facteurs associes a la transfusion sanguine perioperatoire sont representes par l’anemie preoperatoire. Le deficit en fer est la premiere cause d’anemie. L’objectif de notre etude est d’evaluer l’impact d’un protocole d’evaluation et de traitement du deficit en fer en periode postoperatoire immediate de chirurgie carcinologique sur la transfusion sanguine postoperatoire et de rechercher les facteurs associes a la transfusion sanguine postoperatoire. Patients et methodes Il s’agit d’une etude monocentrique comparant deux populations de patients operes de chirurgie carcinologique sus-mesocolique. La premiere serie (S1) de patients, retrospective, beneficiait de ces interventions de janvier 2011 a decembre 2012, avant la mise en place d’un algorithme d’evaluation et de traitement du deficit en fer par carboxymaltose ferrique (CF). La deuxieme serie (S2), prospective, beneficiait de ces interventions de janvier 2013 a juillet 2013, apres la mise en place de cet algorithme. L’objectif de principal de cette etude etait de mettre en evidence une reduction significative du nombre de patients transfuses en periode postoperatoire par l’application de cet algorithme. L’objectif secondaire etait de determiner les facteurs associes a la transfusion sanguine postoperatoire. Resultats Cent quarante-sept patients etaient inclus, 111 pour la serie S1 et 36 pour la serie S2. Les deux series etaient comparables concernant l’âge, le sexe, l’indice de masse corporelle, les comorbidites, le type histologique et la prise en charge perioperatoire. Six patients de la serie S2 presentaient un deficit en fer et cinq d’entre eux etaient traites par CF. Il existait une difference significative entre les deux series concernant la proportion de patients transfuses en postoperatoire (35 % pour S1 versus 11 % pour S2, p = 0,009). En analyse bivariee, le fait de beneficier de l’algorithme etait un facteur de protection vis-a-vis de la transfusion sanguine postoperatoire (OR = 0,2 [0,1–0,7], p = 0,002). En analyse bivariee, un pourcentage de globules rouges hypochromes preoperatoire superieur a 10 %, la duree d’intervention et la transfusion peroperatoire etaient des facteurs de risque de transfusion postoperatoire. Aucune complication liee au traitement par CF n’etait notee ( Tableau 1 , Fig. 1 ). Discussion Notre etude met en evidence l’interet de l’evaluation et du traitement du deficit en fer pour reduire les besoins transfusionnels, et ce d’autant plus qu’il apparait que le deficit en fer est un facteur associe a la transfusion sanguine postoperatoire. D’autres etudes sont necessaire pour evaluer l’impact du traitement du deficit en fer sur l’evolution postoperatoire, et son integration dans une strategie de traitement global de l’anemie preoperatoire.

Resume La mort cerebrale entraine une diminution du taux plasmatique de la triiodothyronine (chez l'homme) et du cortisol (chez l'animal). Ces modifications hormonales sont responsables, selon Novitzky et coll., d'une alteration du metabolisme aerobie conduisant a une degradation de l'etat hemodynamique. C'est pourquoi ces auteurs ont propose une hormonotherapie associant triiodothyronine (T3) et cortisone dans la reanimation des patients, donneurs d'organes, en etat de mort cerebrale. Malheureusement, des biais methodologiques ont entache la validite de l'etude princeps. Le but de ce travail est de rechercher si une hormonotherapie (HT) comprenant T3 et cortisone, associee a la reanimation symptomatique, ameliore la stabilite metabolique et hemodynamique du patient en etat de mort cerebrale et diminue ses besoins en medicaments catecholaminergiques. Il s'agit d'un essai controle, randomise, conduit en double aveugle sur deux groupes de 20 patients adultes en etat de mort cerebrale. Un groupe recoit une HT (2 ou 4 g de T3 et 100 mg d'hemisuccinate d'hydrocortisone, administres par voie i.v. directe une ou deux fois par heure) ; l'autre groupe recoit un placebo (P) (serum physiologique). Le critere d'evaluation principal est l'evolution du profil hemodynamique, jugee sur la Pasys, la Pcv et l'evolution des besoins en dobutamine ; le critere d'evaluation secondaire est l'apparition ou l'aggravation d'une acidose metabolique, jugee sur le pH, le taux de bicarbonates sanguins arteriels et sur l'evolution des besoins en bicarbonate de sodium. Les deux groupes sont comparables (sexe, âge, cause de la mort cerebrale, delai entre la mort cerebrale et de debut du protocole, duree de protocole). Il n'y a pas de difference statistiquement significative entre les deux groupes ni pour l'evolution du profil hemodynamique (amelioration : 9 cas (HT) versus 10 cas (P) ; degradation : 2 versus 4), ni pour l'apparition ou l'aggravation d'une acidose metabolique (5 versus 5). Ces resultats ne confirment pas ceux de l'etude princeps de Novitzky et coll. L'hormonotherapie n'ameliore pas significativement la stabilite des patients en etat de mort cerebrale. La reanimation conventionnelle associant un remplissage vasculaire adequat et un maintien rigoureux de la balance hydroelectrolytique permet d'obtenir une bonne stabilite hemodynamique et metabolique avec peu de medicaments inotropes positifs.

Abstract

International audience; The length of MOSFET channels is an important circuit design parameter, and this paper focuses on a new industrially-compatible technique using gate-to-channel measurements Cgc(Vg) to provide accurate extraction of the channel length. Thanks to fully-automatic probers, the technique provides large scale extractions and so, statistical-based results can be extracted with a maximized reliability. An in-depth study of parasitic capacitances has been performed to improve the extraction accuracy to within a few nanometers.

Abstract

We have measured inclusive distributions for charged particles in hadronic decays of the {ital Z} boson. The variables chosen for study were charged-particle multiplicity, scaled momentum, and momenta transverse to the sphericity axes. The distributions have been corrected for detector effects and are compared with data from {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} annihilation at lower energies and with the predictions of several QCD-based models. The data are in reasonable agreement with expectations.

Abstract

The light scalar Higgs boson h and the pseudoscalar Higgs boson A of the minimal supersymmetric standard model have been searched for in the processes e+e−→hff and e+e−→hA using data collected by ALEPH at the LEP e+e− collider, with center of mass energies at and near the Z peak. Using a variety of signatures adapted to various mass ranges for h and A, we have excluded a large domain in the parameter space. For large values of ν2ν1, the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two Higgs fields, the whole range from 0 to 38.8 GeV is excluded for Mh and MA at 95% CL.

Abstract

We have performed a search for supersymmetric particles using acoplanar pairs of oppositely-charged particles in decays of the Z0. In 0.53 pb−1 of integrated luminosity near the Z0 peak, we observe two events where approximately four are expected from background, allowing limits to be extended on combined photino and slepton masses, and also on combined photino and chargino masses.

Abstract

We report on properties of hadronic events from e+e− annihilation observed by the ALEPH detector at the large Electron Positron Collider at CERN. The center-of-mass energy was . Measured distributions of the global event-shape variables sphericity, aplanarity, thrust and minor value, and of the inclusive variables xp, p⊥in, p⊥out and y are presented. We measure a mean charged multiplicity in hadronic events of 〈Nch〉=21.3±0.1 (statistical)±0.6 (systematic). The data are in good agreement with QCD-based models which use the leading-logarithm approximation, and are less well described by a model using O(αs2) QCD.

Abstract

International audience; Constant downscaling of transistors leads to increase the relative difference between Lmask and Leff. Effective length (Leff) extractions are now crucial to avoid calculations errors on parameters such as the mobility, which can exceed 100% for shorter devices. We propose an industrially-adapted method to extract Leff by using an enhanced "split C-V" method. Accurate and consistent values have been extracted (plusmn1 nm) and then correlated to mobility and HCI lifetime studies, as a function of Leff.

Abstract

End-stage renal failure patients are particularly at risk for tuberculosis, especially for peritoneal tuberculosis. Microbiological diagnosis remains hazardous in many cases.We report on a case of peritoneal tuberculosis in an end-stage renal failure patient. The diagnosis was suspected on the basis of adenosine deaminase dosage in peritoneal fluid, allowing an early presumptive treatment and a favourable outcome with a 3 years follow-up.The measurement of adenosine deaminase activity in ascites represents a diagnostic advance in tuberculous peritonitis among end-stage renal failure patients.

Abstract

This work shows that the channel hot carrier (CHC) degradation for a p-MOSFET consists of two different regimes. At low V/sub g/, the degradation is dominated by hot electrons produced by impact ionization. The hot electrons are responsible for the creation of both interface traps and electron traps within the oxide. At high V/sub g/, a NBT-induced hot carrier effect is evidenced as well as an anomalous CHC effect. This work should help understanding the CHC degradation of pMOSFET as well as determining the worst case degradation.

Abstract

Despite large efforts given by the semiconductor community to overcome NBTI challenges in ultra-thin gate dielectrics, both the understanding of mechanisms [1-9] and the characterization methodology are not completely achieved yet. It is well accepted that the mechanisms lying behind NBTI are the interface traps generation, the fixed charges build-up and the hole trapping in the gate oxide [8]. The effort is devoted reducing the inherent recovery during the NBTI characterization. The standard methodology [12] has been shown to have serious effects on the degradation itself [13, 11, 8]. In this context and since the degradation is not permanent but recoverable, we propose in this work a new framework to manage NBTI in ultra-scaled technologies. This takes into account both the recoverable proportion of the degradation, which is studied in the first part of the paper, and the electrical parameter legitimacy for DC and AC modes analysis developed in the second part.

Abstract

This work presents new perspectives of the NBTI in advanced technology. Both modelling and characterization of NBTI are investigated for the maturation of the reliability management in advanced node technologies. A physical-based VT instability model is presented considering interface trapped charges, fixed charges and oxide trapped holes effects. Finally, we discuss on the lifetime concept in the case of recoverable NBTI-induced degradation.

Abstract

We focus in this study on the negative bias temperature instability (NBTI)-induced /spl Delta/N/sub IT/ phenomenon and we point out its relative gate-oxide thickness (T/sub OX/) dependences. Studies are carried out in a large T/sub OX/ range, comparing the gate-oxide quality which was grown with or without nitrogen incorporation. We have developed an oxide field (F/sub OX/) dependence for /spl Delta/N/sub IT/ and we show the two opposite effects of T/sub OX/ on the threshold voltage shift (/spl Delta/V/sub T/). Simulation of both effects shows a good correlation with experimental results in pure oxide and confirms the reduced interface trapped charge effect in /spl Delta/V/sub T/ in nitrided devices. Results enable us to extrapolate the NBTI impact when T/sub OX/ is varied which allows us to determine in a useful way the security margin during the gate-oxide process optimization.

Abstract

We have developed in this work a new characterization methodology which includes stressing and measurement in a single experimental step. This overcomes the influence of the hole detrapping effect in ultra-thin gate-oxides (T/sub OX/=1.4-1.6 nm) and enables comparison of gate-oxide nitridation impacts on negative bias temperature instability (NBTI). This new approach offers possibilities to measure the whole degradation and to improve DC NBTI characterization in operating logic circuits.

Abstract

International audience; An overview of evolution of transistor parameters under negative bias temperature instability stress conditions commonly observed in p-MOSFETs in recent technologies is presented. The physical mechanisms of the degradation as well as the different defects involved have been discussed according to a systematic set of experiments with different stress conditions. According to our findings, a physical model is proposed which could be used to more accurately predict the transistor degradation. Finally, the influence of different process splits as the gate oxide nitridation, the nitrogen content, the source/drain implant and poly doping level on the NBTI degradation is investigated and discussed with our present understanding.
