International audience; Sheep are often used as a proxy for dairy cows when measuring the digestibility of a feed. In recent years grassland management guidelines for ruminant animals have been re-evaluated in accordance with the progression in animal genetics and the acknowledgement that genetic potential has an influence on both feed intake and digestibility. Recommended pre-grazing herbage mass (HM) targets are now much lower with improved perennial ryegrass varieties available for grazing swards. The objective of this study was to compare the in vivo digestibility of perennial ryegrass in wether sheep and lactating dairy cows. The experimental design was selected to measure the effect of animal species (cows, sheep), sward HM measured cutting herbage at 4 cm above ground level (low: 1 700 kg DM/ha and high: 4 000 kg DM/ha) and season (Spring: Apr-May, Summer: Jul-Aug) on the digestibility of perennial ryegrass. Each HM treatment was offered to each animal within species and season for 12 d using a 2 HM x 2 period changeover Latin square design. There were eight cows and eight sheep, so there were four 2 x 2 Latin squares for each animal species (two) at each season (two), giving 64 observations. During each 12 d experimental period, the first 6 d were used for adaptation (adaptation phase) and the final 6 d were used for measurement (measurement phase). In vivo organic matter digestibility (OMD) in spring did not differ between animal species but in summer sheep had higher in vivo OMD than cows. The results described herein highlight the suitability of wether sheep as an alternative to dairy cows for determining the digestibility of perennial ryegrass in spring but not in summer. Stage of growth of the plant, which is intrinsically linked to season, should be considered as results show that digestibility in the ruminant was affected by season but not differentially affected by changing sward HM. International audience; It is essential to have accurate data relating sward herbage mass (HM) to voluntary dry matter intake (VDMI) and in vivo organic matter digestibility (OMDIV) across the year. This will ensure that the production performance of animals grazing differing HM swards can be accurately predicted using in vitro and in situ methods. The objectives of this experiment were to (i) determine the OMDIV and VDMI of sheep offered perennial ryegrass differing in HM throughout the growing season and (ii) evaluate in vitro gas production (IVGP) and in situ indigestible neutral detergent fibre (iNDFIS) as methods of predicting OMDIV. A 3 × 3 Latin square design was used to investigate three HM treatments. The target HM (measured > 4 cm) of perennial ryegrass for the three HM treatments was 1200 kg dry matter (DM)/ha (Low), 2500 kg DM/ha (Medium) and 4000 kg DM/ha (High). The experiment was a Latin square design repeated in three time stages (TS) in 2013 (TS1, TS2 and TS3). A 3 × 2 incomplete Latin square design was used in early spring 2014 (TS4). In TS4 the HM were lower than in the previous TS at 1000 kg DM/ha (Low), 1800 kg DM/ha (Medium) and 2500 kg DM/ha (High). Each experimental period within each TS consisted of a 6 day adaptation phase and 6 day measurement phase; with 12 Texel wether sheep used. Sheep were fed ad libitum to ensure a 10% refusal rate. The interaction between TS and HM treatment had the greatest effect on chemical composition, VDMI and OMDIV. Low HM swards had the greatest VDMI and OMDIV. For each 1000 kg DM/ha increase in HM, OMDIV was reduced by 2.3% on average. This varied from 0.9% in TS4 to 2.7% in TS3. There was no difference between HM treatments in the rate of digestion of digestible NDF using the IVGP technique. In situ indigestible NDF concentration and OMD derived from IVGP (OMDGP) were highly correlated with OMDIV (r2 = 0.901 and 0.895 respectively) and moderately correlated with digestible organic matter intake (DOMI) (r2 = 0.633 and 0.652 respectively). It can be concluded that the interaction between HM and TS will greatly affect OMDIV and VDMI. Secondly OMDIV can be predicted by both iNDFIS and OMDGP with acceptable accuracy to allow for their use in future feed evaluations.

peer-reviewed The influence of feeding system and lactation period on the gross composition, macroelements (Ca, P, Mg, and Na), and trace elements (Zn, Fe, Cu, Mo, Mn, Se, and Co) of bovine milk was investigated. The feeding systems included outdoor grazing on perennial ryegrass pasture (GRO), outdoor grazing on perennial ryegrass and white clover pasture (GRC), and indoors offered total mixed ration (TMR). Sixty spring-calving Holstein Friesian dairy cows were assigned to 3 herds, each consisting of 20 cows, and balanced with respect to parity, calving date, and pre-experimental milk yield and milk solids yield. The herds were allocated to 1 of the 3 feeding systems from February to November. Milk samples were collected on 10 occasions over the period June 17 to November 26, at 2 or 3 weekly intervals, when cows were on average 119 to 281 d in lactation (DIL). The total lactation period was arbitrarily sub-divided into 2 lactation periods based on DIL, namely mid lactation, June 17 to September 9 when cows were 119 to 203 DIL; and late lactation, September 22 to November 26 when cows were 216 to 281 DIL. With the exception of Mg, Na, Fe, Mo, and Co, all other variables were affected by feeding system. The GRO milk had the highest mean concentrations of total solids, total protein, casein, Ca, and P. The TMR milk had the highest concentrations of lactose, Cu, and Se, and lowest level of total protein. The GRC milk had levels of lactose, Zn, and Cu similar to those of GRO milk, and concentrations of TS, Ca, and P similar to those of TMR milk. Lactation period affected all variables, apart from the concentrations of Fe, Cu, Mn, and Se. On average, the proportion (%) of total Ca, P, Zn, Mn, or Se that sedimented with the casein on high-speed ultracentrifugation at 100,000 × g was ≥60%, whereas that of Na, Mg, or Mo was ≤45% total. The results demonstrate how the gross composition and elemental composition of milk can be affected by different feeding systems.

peer-reviewed Dairy cows in experimental grazing herds are often confined for metabolic measurements. The objective of this study was to establish effects of transfer from pasture, to tie-stalls in a metabolism house, then back to pasture, on lying behaviour and locomotion score of lactating cows: Holstein-Friesian (H, n = 16), Jersey (J, n = 16) and H × J (HJ, n = 16). Cows were transferred to tie-stalls on d 1 for 12 days, and were offered freshly cut ryegrass according to herbage allowance (HERB) and genotype: J low = 14; J high = 17; H and HJ low = 16; and H and HJ high = 20 kg DM/d. Lying behaviour was recorded on four days: −2, −1 (Pre-confinement), 3 (Early confinement), 10, 11 (Late confinement), 13 and 14 (Post-confinement) relative to transfer (d 1) using dataloggers, and was also video-recorded during the first 15 h. Locomotion score was recorded on days −4, −3, 12 and 16. No effects of HERB on lying variables were observed during the first 15 h in confinement, but J cows made more lying intentions (21.0 vs. 12.2; P < 0.05) and tended (P = 0.07) to have a shorter latency to lie. Cows spent less (P < 0.001) time lying in early confinement (07:22:29 h/d) than on any of the other occasions (9:12:50 h/d). Cows had more (P < 0.001) and shorter (P < 0.001) lying bouts in confinement than while at pasture. Low HERB cows spent more time lying than high HERB cows (09:54:55 vs. 09:09:33 h/d; P < 0.01). J had higher locomotion scores than H (9.2 ± 0.2 vs.7.8 ± 0.2; P < 0.001), and tended (P = 0.09) to have higher scores than HJ (8.5 ± 0.2) cows. Locomotion scores were lowest pre confinement, highest at turnout (d 12), and intermediate after that at pasture (d 16) (7.6 ± 0.2, 9.3 ± 0.2 and 8.6 ± 0.3, respectively; P < 0.01). On transfer to the metabolism house cows showed disrupted patterns of lying although daily lying time returned to levels similar to pasture by late confinement. Confinement also resulted in a short-term deterioration in locomotory ability, which although improving, was still evident 4 days following the cows return to pasture with Jersey cows being more affected than the other genotypes. These findings suggest that longer adaptation periods and temporary release to loafing areas may improve both the validity of data collected and cow welfare.

The objective of the present study was to estimate genetic parameters across lactation for measures of energy balance (EB) and a range of feed efficiency variables as well as to quantify the genetic inter-relationships between them. Net energy intake (NEI) from pasture and concentrate intake was estimated up to 8 times per lactation for 2,481 lactations from 1,274 Holstein-Friesian cows. A total of 8,134 individual feed intake measurements were used. Efficiency traits were either ratio based or residual based; the latter were derived from least squares regression models. Residual energy intake (REI) was defined as NEI minus predicted energy requirements [e.g., net energy of lactation (NEL), maintenance, and body tissue anabolism] or supplied from body tissue mobilization; residual energy production was defined as the difference between actual NEL and predicted NEL based on NEI, maintenance, and body tissue anabolism/catabolism. Energy conversion efficiency was defined as NEL divided by NEI. Random regression animal models were used to estimate residual, additive genetic, and permanent environmental (co)variances across lactation. Heritability across lactation stages varied from 0.03 to 0.36 for all efficiency traits. Within-trait genetic correlations tended to weaken as the interval between lactation stages compared lengthened for EB, REI, residual energy production, and NEI. Analysis of eigenvalues and associated eigenfunctions for EB and the efficiency traits indicate the ability to genetically alter the profile of these lactation curves to potentially improve dairy cow efficiency differently at different stages of lactation. Residual energy intake and EB were moderately to strongly genetically correlated with each other across lactation (genetic correlations ranged from 0.45 to 0.90), indicating that selection for lower REI alone (i.e., deemed efficient cows) would favor cows with a compromised energy status; nevertheless, selection for REI within a holistic breeding goal could be used to overcome such antagonisms. The smallest (8.90% of genetic variance) and middle (11.22% of genetic variance) eigenfunctions for REI changed sign during lactation, indicating the potential to alter the shape of the REI lactation profile. Results from the present study suggest exploitable genetic variation exists for a range of efficiency traits, and the magnitude of this variation is sufficiently large to justify consideration of the feed efficiency complex in future dairy breeding goals. Moreover, it is possible to alter the trajectories of the efficiency traits to suit a particular breeding objective, although this relies on very precise across-parity genetic parameter estimates, including genetic correlations with health and fertility traits (as well as other traits).

Context Pasture allowance (PA) in early lactation is widely acknowledged to influence animal performance; however, climatic factors can limit grass growth in early spring, resulting in potential feed deficits on farm. Aim The present study determined whether PA restrictions imposed in early lactation impair energy balance and metabolic health of the cow. Methods One hundred and five cows were assigned to one of seven grazing treatments from 14 March to 4 July 2016 (16 weeks). The control-treatment cows were offered a PA to achieve a post-grazing sward height of 3.5 cm. The cows on the remaining treatments were offered a PA representing 60% of that offered to the control cows for a duration of 2 or 6 weeks from 14 March (mid-March; MMx2 and MMx6), 28 March (end-March; EMx2 and EMx6) or 11 April (mid-April; MAx2 and MAx6). Measurements were collected over the final 2-week period of the restriction for each individual restricted treatment and the control treatment. Key results Restricting PA in early lactation (34–88 days in milk) resulted in a mean reduction in dry-matter intake (DMI) of 25%; however, DMI as a proportion of the control treatment declined for EMx6 (75% of control DMI achieved) and MAx6 (65%) compared with the MMx6 (78%), which may be attributable to changes in the sward, as the plant changes from the vegetative to reproductive phase during this period. The reduction in milk production, relative to the control treatment, was similar among all restricted treatments (18%), resulting in a 1.1-kg reduction in milk output per 1-kg reduction in DMI. However, there was no effect of PA restriction or duration on body condition score, energy balance or blood metabolites, suggesting that the animals used in the current study made sufficient physiological adaptions to partition energy for the maintenance of body reserves. Conclusion In conclusion, short-term restrictions of PA up to 25% of DMI, for up to 6 weeks, can be used as a management strategy to cope with feed deficits in early lactation without impairing normal metabolic function of the early lactation dairy cow. Implications The results of the present study identified the ability of the early lactation dairy cow at grass to adapt to short-term deficits in pasture availability, without affecting the metabolic functioning of the animals

Two tetraploid varieties, Astonenergy and Delphin, and two diploid varieties of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), Tyrella and Glenroyal, were evaluated for voluntary dry matter intake (VDMI) and in vivo organic matter digestibility (OMD) using Texel wether sheep housed in digestibility stalls. The structural profile and leaf, stem, dead proportions of the sward were also measured. The experiment was repeated on three occasions (Time Stage (TS)): May/June 2013 (TS1), August/September 2013 (TS2) and September/October 2014 (TS3). Data from both years were analysed separately. There was no variety effect on VDMI during TS1 (1481 ± 44.4 g/day), TS2 (1621 ± 41.7 g/day) or TS3 (1223 ± 86 g/day). There was a significant interaction between TS and variety for OMD (P

peer-reviewed In temperate climates where cows are primarily managed at pasture shortages of grass could result in nutritional deficits for the cow and may have a variety of behavioural consequences. Lying behaviour is one of the most researched aspects of dairy cow behaviour, and can provide insights into cow welfare and physiological state. This study investigated the effect of daily herbage allowance (DHA) on the lying behaviour of dairy cow during early lactation. Ninety-six cows were randomly assigned to one of eight treatments in a 2 × 4 factorial design; experimental duration (2 week (2 W) or 6 week (6 W)), and nutritional levels (DHA) (60%, 80%, 100% or 120% of intake capacity). Cows were assigned to treatment at 28 ± 8.4 days in milk, and lying behaviour of cows in the 6 W treatments recorded using modified voltage data loggers on 4 occasions; the week prior to the start of the experiment, during week 3 (MID), and week 6 (LATE), and 7 weeks after the study concluded (POST), when the cows were all returned to a feed allowance of 100% intake capacity. Nitrate (NO3−) leaching and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission from urine patches in grazed pastures are key sources of water and air pollution, respectively. Numerous studies have demonstrated that broadcast application of the nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide (DCD) can abate such losses of reactive nitrogen (N). This research explored an alternative usage of DCD. It is the first field study that investigates the feeding of powdered DCD mixed with several typical cattle feeds as a practical and effective method to deliver a nitrification inhibitor to urine patches. DCD (in its dry powdered form) was manually mixed with three typical dairy cow feed types (barley concentrate, maize silage or grass silage) before being fed to the cattle in a Latin Square design experiment. DCD delivery to the small area covered by urine patches during grazing events was then measured as a DCD equivalent application rate (in kg DCD ha−1). The absence of a significant feed type effect (P > 0.1) on the urine patch DCD equivalent application rate suggests that the ingestion of any of the three supplementary feeds mixed with DCD should be similarly effective at delivering DCD to urine patches, despite the potential differences in aspects of feed digestibility and the impact on rumen pH and rate of DCD passage through the rumen. Importantly, there was a highly significant positive relationship (P ≤ 0.0001) between excreted DCD and N in urine and urine patches, which meant that the deposition rate of DCD matched the urinary N inputs in urine patches. Additionally, less total DCD was needed than is required with broadcast application. Added to the fact that DCD and urinary N are both deposited at the same time and intimately mixed in urine patches, feeding DCD to dairy cows after mixing with different feeds could represent a more effective and practical DCD application strategy than a DCD broadcast application at a single rate.

Intake and digestibility are key drivers of animal production from grazed forage. The objective of this study was to compare the in vivo digestibility and voluntary dry matter (DM) intake of grass-only and grass-white clover (grass-clover) forage in individually housed sheep. This study was a Latin square design, repeated on three occasions in 2017: Spring (27 March&ndash, 29 April), summer (19 June&ndash, 22 July) and autumn (4 September&ndash, 29 September). Grass-clover and grass-only swards were harvested daily and offered ad libitum to 6 individually housed wether sheep per treatment per period. Digestibility of DM, organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) were determined using the total faecal collection method. Dry matter intake was not significantly different between treatments. White clover inclusion increased forage crude protein concentration in autumn (p &lt, 0.001) and reduced NDF concentration in the offered forage (p &lt, 0.001), increasing nitrogen intake per sheep in autumn (p &lt, 0.001) and decreasing NDF intake per sheep in autumn (p &lt, 0.001). Grass-clover swards had a significantly greater OM and DM digestibility compared to grass-only swards (p &lt, 0.05). This could potentially result in increased animal production from grass-clover swards compared to grass-only swards.

peer-reviewed The study investigated the effects of reducing daily herbage allowance (DHA) from 15.0 to 11.8 kg dry matter per cow (>3.5 cm post grazing sward height) to a spring-calved herd during early lactation on the composition, rennet coagulability and heat stability characteristics of milk during early lactation (EL, 29–70 days in milk, DIM), mid lactation (ML, 78–183 DIM), and late lactation (LL, 205–267 DIM). Samples of milk were taken at approximate 10 d intervals during EL and at 1–3 week intervals during ML and LL. Reducing DHA led to reductions in milk yield, milk solids yield, and concentrations of protein (∼0.22%, w/w) and casein (0.13%, w/w) during EL. Otherwise, it had little effect on milk composition or on the selected processing characteristics in ML, LL or overall lactation. Stage of lactation resulted in comparatively large changes in most compositional parameters, rennet gelation and heat stability.

Pasture availability in early spring can be limited due to climatic effects on grass production, increasing the likelihood of feed deficits in early lactation of spring-calving pasture-based systems. We hypothesized that restricting pasture allowance (PA) when animals are at peak milk production will have more negative implications on milk production compared with restricting animals before this period. A total of 105 cows were assigned to 1 of 7 grazing treatments from March 14 to October 31, 2016 (33 wk). The control treatment was offered a PA to achieve a postgrazing sward height > 3.5 cm and mean pasture allowance of 15.5 kg of dry matter per cow. The remaining treatments were offered a PA representing 60% of that offered to the control for a duration of 2 or 6 wk from March 14 (mid-March; MMx2 and MMx6), March 28 (end of March; EMx2 and EMx6), or April 11 (mid-April; MAx2 and MAx6). Within grazing treatment, animals were also assigned to 1 of 2 calving dates (early and late) based on days in milk (DIM) on March 14. Early calved (EC) cows were ≥36 DIM, while late calved (LC) were ≤35 DIM. Restricting PA for 2 and 6 wk reduced daily milk yield (−1.6 and −2.2 kg/cow, respectively), cumulative milk protein yield (−4.0 and −6.3 kg/cow, respectively), and cumulative milk solids yield (−5.8 and −9.5 kg/cow, respectively) in the first 10 wk of the experiment. Daily milk yield was similar across the treatments at the end of the 33-wk period (16.8 kg/cow, average of all treatments), as was daily milk solids yield (1.40 kg/cow). Cows in the EC group produced less milk over the first 10 wk of the experiment (20.0 kg/cow per day) compared with the LC animals (22.1 kg/cow per day). However, body weight was greater (+15 kg/cow) in the EC animals compared with the LC, while body condition score was similar (2.85). This outcome indicates that animals that are restricted later in early lactation (circa onset of peak milk production) partition a greater proportion of available energy to maintenance, resulting in greater losses in milk production. These data indicate that despite the immediate reduction in milk production, restricting intake of grazing cows to 80% of that required to achieve spring grazing targets for postgrazing sward height for up to 6 wk may be used as a method of managing short-term pasture deficits on farm with minimal effects on total lactation performance.

peer-reviewed The n-alkane technique for estimating herbage dry matter intake (DMI) of dairy cows was investigated in this experiment. Eight Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were offered perennial ryegrass ad libitum that had been harvested at two different herbage masses and during two different seasons, in order to assess the effect of herbage mass and season on the accuracy of the n-alkane technique. Two pre-harvested herbage mass treatments (low, target 1500 kg DM/ha versus high, target 4000 kg DM/ha, measured above 4 cm), were investigated in a crossover factorial arrangement within each of two seasons (summer versus autumn), in Ireland. Each season consisted of two periods, each 12 days in length. Cows were housed in individual metabolism stalls to allow for accurate determination of measured DMI. Herbage DMI was estimated, with the n-alkane technique, by dosing cows twice daily with a C32 n-alkane. Pre-harvest herbage mass and season did not affect the n-alkane estimated DMI, although lack of season and herbage mass effects may have been masked by variation that occurred between swards within the same herbage mass and season. However, there were a number of differences between summer and autumn in the fecal recovery rates of a number of n-alkanes suggesting that the effect of season requires further investigation prior to the application of recovery rates from literature values when investigating diet selection and botanical composition. Overall, the n-alkane technique provided good estimates of DMI; the discrepancy had a standard deviation due to sward of 1.2 and 1.0 kg DM/cow per day, and hence potential bias of up to twice this, and a measurement error standard deviation of 1.3 and 1.0 kg DM/cow per day, for the C33/C32 and C31/C32 n-alkane pair methods respectively. Two n-alkane pairs were tested, and C33/C32 n-alkane provided the most precise estimates of DMI, compared with the C31/C32 n-alkane pair. This research provides some strong evidence for future use of the n-alkane technique including that the accuracy of the technique has not been influenced by contemporary changes to herbage management, is not affected by seasonal changes, and overall is an accurate and precise technique for estimating DMI. Methane is generated in the foregut of all ruminant animals by the microorganisms present. Dietary manipulation is regarded as the most effective and most convenient way to reduce methane emissions (and in turn energy loss in the animal) and increase nitrogen utilization efficiency. This review examines the impact of diet on bovine rumen function and outlines what is known about the rumen microbiome. Our understanding of this area has increased significantly in recent years due to the application of omics technologies to determine microbial composition and functionality patterns in the rumen. This information can be combined with data on nutrition, rumen physiology, nitrogen excretion and/or methane emission to provide comprehensive insights into the relationship between rumen microbial activity, nitrogen utilisation efficiency and methane emission, with an ultimate view to the development of new and improved intervention strategies.

peer-reviewed International interest in feed efficiency, and in particular energy intake and residual energy intake (REI), is intensifying due to a greater global demand for animal-derived protein and energy sources. Feed efficiency is a trait of economic importance, and yet is overlooked in national dairy cow breeding goals. This is due primarily to a lack of accurate data on commercial animals, but also a lack of clarity on the most appropriate definition of the feed intake and utilization complex. The objective of the present study was to derive alternative definitions of energetic efficiency in grazing lactating dairy cows and to quantify the inter-relationships among these alternative definitions. Net energy intake (NEI) from pasture and concentrate intake was estimated up to 8 times per lactation for 2,693 lactations from 1,412 Holstein-Friesian cows. Energy values of feed were based on the French Net Energy system where 1 UFL is the net energy requirements for lactation equivalent of 1 kg of air-dry barley. A total of 8,183 individual feed intake measurements were available. Energy balance was defined as the difference between NEI and energy expenditure. Efficiency traits were either ratio-based or residual-based; the latter were derived from least squares regression models. Residual energy intake was defined as NEI minus predicted energy to fulfill the requirements for the various energy sinks. The energy sinks (e.g., NEL, metabolic live weight) and additional contributors to energy kinetics (e.g., live weight loss) combined, explained 59% of the variation in NEI, implying that REI represented 41% of the variance in total NEI. The most efficient 10% of test-day records, as defined by REI (n = 709), on average were associated with a 7.59 UFL/d less NEI (average NEI of the entire population was 16.23 UFL/d) than the least efficient 10% of test-day records based on REI (n = 709). Additionally, the most efficient 10% of test-day records, as defined by REI, were associated with superior energy conversion efficiency (ECE, i.e., NEL divided by NEI; ECE = 0.55) compared with the least efficient 10% of test-day records (ECE = 0.33). Moreover, REI was positively correlated with energy balance, implying that more negative REI animals (i.e., deemed more efficient) are expected to be, on average, in greater negative energy balance. Many of the correlations among the 14 defined efficiency traits differed from unity, implying that each trait is measuring a different aspect of efficiency. The objective of this experiment was to measure the milk yield and composition from cows offered a total mixed ration (TMR) compared with those grazing grass and offered different quantities of concentrates during the first 6 wk of lactation when the experimental diets were offered, and for the remainder of lactation when all animals were offered a similar diet. Forty-eight (18 primiparous and 30 multiparous) Holstein-Friesian dairy cows (mean calving date, September 12 ± 15 d) were randomly assigned to a 4-treatment (n=12) randomized block design experiment. The 4 treatments were (1) housed indoors and offered ad libitum TMR (ITMR; control); (2) grazed grass and 1 kg (dry matter; DM) of concentrate/cow per day (G1); (3) grazed grass and 4 kg (DM) of concentrate/cow per day (G4); (4) grazed grass and 8 kg (DM) concentrate/cow per day (G8). Experimental treatments were imposed starting on September 29, 2008, and lasted for 6 wk. Following the 6-wk experimental period, all cows were managed similarly. They were offered a TMR until turnout to pasture the following spring (February 10, 2009) and grazed grass from then until drying off. The deferred effect of the 6-wk experimental period on production parameters was monitored during a 13-wk period, and total lactation production was also investigated. During the 6-wk experimental period, total dry matter intake (DMI) was greater for ITMR and G8 cows compared with G4 and G1 cows. Differences in total DMI, measured during the 6-wk period when treatments were imposed, were reflected in milk yield. During the 6-wk period, ITMR cows had the greatest milk yield (27.3 kg/cow per day) and G1 cows had the lowest (21.1 kg/cow per day). Milk yields of the G4 and G8 cows were similar (24.8 kg/cow per day). We detected no effect of treatment on milk fat (3.77%) or milk protein (3.25%) concentration. Treatment did affect milk solids yield (MSY): ITMR cows yielded 1.90 kg/cow per day, which did not differ from that of the G8 cows (1.75 kg/cow per day), G1 cows had the lowest MSY (1.53 kg/cow per day) and that of G4 (1.69 kg/cow per day) cows was lower than ITMR but not different from G8. At the end of the 6-wk experimental period, the ITMR and G8 cows had greater body weight (525 kg/cow) than the G4 and G1 cows (502 kg/cow). Treatment had no effect on milk yield or composition during the remainder of the lactation and no effect on cumulative lactation milk yield or composition. The data from this experiment indicate that herbage can be incorporated into the diet of early-lactation, autumn-calving dairy cows without any negative consequences on total lactation milk yield or composition.

SUMMARYIn agricultural production systems, nitrogen (N) losses to the environment can occur through nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and nitrate (NO3−) leaching. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate: (1) if urine excreted by non-lactating dairy cows pulse-dosed with dicyandiamide (DCD) and applied to lysimeters reduced N2O-N emissions and NO3−-N leaching on two soil types; and (2) if urine + DCD would increase herbage production over winter. Lysimeters were used to measure N2O emissions and NO3-N leaching. The soils used were a free-draining acid brown earth of sandy loam to loam texture (termed free-draining) and a poorly drained silt loam gley (termed poorly drained). Grass plots were established on the free-draining soil to measure herbage production. The N loading rate of the urine + DCD was 508 kg N/ha and the urine without DCD (urine only) was 451 kg N/ha. Total NO3−-N leaching losses from the free-draining and poorly draining soils were reduced from 100 and 81 kg NO3−-N/ha on the urine-only treatment, respectively, to 9 and 11·6 kg NO3−-N/ha on the urine + DCD treatment, respectively. Total N2O-N emissions from the free-draining and poorly drained soils were reduced significantly from 13·6 and 12·1 kg N2O-N/ha on the urine-only treatment, respectively, to 2·23 and 5·24 kg N2O-N/ha on the urine + DCD treatment, respectively. Applying urine with DCD to pastures inhibited the nitrification process for up to 56 days after treatment application. In the current experiment, there was no significant effect on spring herbage production when urine + DCD was applied to grass plots. Therefore, feeding DCD to dairy cows to apply DCD directly in urine patches was shown to be an effective mitigation strategy to reduce NO3−-N leaching and N2O-N emissions but did not appear to increase spring herbage production.

In temperate climates where cows are primarily managed at pasture shortages of grass could result in nutritional deficits for the cow and thus pose a challenge to her welfare. This study investigated the effect of daily herbage allowance (DHA) on dairy cow lying behaviour, locomotory ability, and some aspects of hoof health. Ninety-six cows were randomly assigned to one of eight treatments in a 2 × 4 factorial design; experimental duration (2 week (2 W) or 6 week (6 W)), and nutritional levels (DHA) (60%, 80%, 100% or 120% of intake capacity). Cows were assigned to treatment on 25 March (36 ± 16 days in milk). Lying behaviour was recorded using modified voltage dataloggers over 7 × 24 h periods at approximately 4 d intervals for cows on the 6 W treatments. Locomotory ability (including overall locomotion, ab/adduction, tracking, speed, head carriage and spine curvature scores) was assessed four times at approximately 16 d intervals. Hoof health (heel erosion and dermatitis scores) were recorded in the milking parlour on four occasions at approximately 19 d intervals. Although there was no effect on daily lying time, DHA tended to affect the duration of lying bouts (P = 0.1). Cows allocated the highest DHA (120%) had shorter bouts than all other treatments (P = 0.05), whereas cows allocated the lowest DHA (60%) had fewer lying bouts than all other treatments (P

peer-reviewed Energy balance (EB) and energy intake (EI) are heritable traits of economic importance. Despite this, neither trait is explicitly included in national dairy cow breeding goals due to a lack of routinely available data from which to compute reliable breeding values. Mid-infrared (MIR) spectrometry, which is performed during routine milk recording, is an accurate predictor of both EB and EI. The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters of EB and EI predicted using MIR spectrometry. Measured EI and EB were available for 1,102 Irish Holstein-Friesian cows based on actual feed intake and energy sink data. A subset of these data (1,270 test-day records) was used to develop equations to predict EI, EB, and daily change in body condition score (ΔBCS) and body weight (ΔBW) using the MIR spectrum with or without milk yield also as a predictor variable. Accuracy of cross-validation of the prediction equations was 0.75, 0.73, 0.77, and 0.70 for EI, EB, ΔBCS, and ΔBW, respectively. Prediction equations were applied to additional spectral data, yielding up to 94,653 records of MIR-predicted EI, EB, ΔBCS, and ΔBW available for variance component estimation. Variance components were estimated using repeatability animal linear mixed models. Heritabilities of MIR-predicted EI, EB, ΔBCS, and ΔBW were 0.20, 0.10, 0.07, and 0.06, respectively; heritability estimates of the respective measured traits were 0.35, 0.16, 0.07, and 0.08, respectively. The genetic correlation between measured and MIR-predicted EI was 0.84 and between measured and MIR-predicted EB was 0.54, indicating that selection based on MIR-predicted EI or EB would improve true EI or EB. Genetic and phenotypic associations between EI and both the milk production and body-change traits were generally in agreement, regardless of whether measured EI or MIR-predicted EI was considered. Higher-yielding animals of higher body weight had greater EI. Predicted EB was negatively genetically correlated with milk yield (genetic correlation = −0.29) and positively genetically correlated with both milk fat and protein percent (genetic correlation = 0.17 and 0.16, respectively). Least squares means phenotypic EI of 198 animals stratified as low, average, and high estimated breeding values for MIR-predicted EI (animal phenotypes were not included in the genetic evaluation) were 154.3, 156.0, and 163.3 MJ/d, corroborating that selection on MIR-predicted EI will, on average, result in differences in phenotypic true EI.

International audience; The production performance of herbage-fed animals is affected by herbage voluntary dry-matter intake (VDMI) and organic matter digestibility. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of herbage mass (HM) on in vivo herbage voluntary intake and digestibility in sheep. The three HM treatments were as follows: 1,100 kg dry matter (DM)/ha (low, L), 2,300 kg DM/ha (medium, M) and 3,700 kg DM/ha (high, H). The study was a Latin square design, repeated on two occasions in 2012: 24 May to 20 July (summer) and 21 July to 5 October (autumn). Twelve Texel wether sheep (individually housed) were offered fresh cut perennial ryegrass herbage for ad libitum consumption. Using the total faecal collection method, the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre was determined. In summer, L had a similar VDMI to M and both had a higher VDMI than H. In autumn, L had a higher VDMI than both M and H. For dry-matter digestibility and organic matter digestibility, there was no significant difference between L and M, which were both higher than H. For every 1% increase in neutral detergent fibre digestibility, VDMI increased by 0.03 kg. In the zero-grazing scenario examined, offering low (1,100 kg DM/ha) HM swards enabled animals to achieve high intakes of highly digestible herbage, which should ensure high animal production performance.

Dietary crude protein (CP) and phosphorus (P) have the potential to alter dairy cow production, nutrient status, and milk heat stability, specifically in early lactation. This study examined the effect of supplementary concentrates with different CP and P concentrations on blood N and P status and on milk yield, composition, and heat stability. The concentrates [4kg of dry matter (DM) concentrate per cow daily] were fed to grazing dairy cows (13kg DM grass) during early lactation. Forty-eight spring-calving dairy cows were allocated to 4 treatments: high CP, high P (HPrHP; 302g/kg DM CP, 6.8g/kg DM P), medium CP, high P (MPrHP; 202g/kg DM CP, 4.7g/kg DM P), low CP, high P (LPrHP; 101g/kg DM CP, 5.1g/kg DM P), and low CP, low P (LPrLP; 101g/kg DM CP, 0.058g/kg DM P), for 8wk. Levels of N excretion were significantly higher in animals fed the HPrHP and MPrHP concentrates; P excretion was significantly lower in animals fed the LPrLP concentrate. Reducing the level of P in the diet (LPrLP concentrate) resulted in a significantly lower blood P concentration, whereas milk yield and composition (fat and protein) were not affected by either CP or P in the diet. The effect of the interaction between treatment and time on milk urea N was significant, reflecting the positive correlation between dietary CP and milk nonprotein N. Increasing supplementary CP and P (HPrHP) in the diet resulted in significantly lower milk heat stability at pH 6.8. The findings show that increasing dietary CP caused a decrease in milk heat stability, which reduced the suitability of milk for processing. The study also found that increasing dietary CP increased milk urea N and milk nonprotein N. Increasing dietary P increased fecal P excretion. These are important considerations for milk processors and producers for control of milk processing and environmental parameters.

peer-reviewed The objective of the present study was to investigate the phenotypic inter- and intra-relationships within and among alternative feed efficiency metrics across different stages of lactation and parities; the expected effect of genetic selection for feed efficiency on the resulting phenotypic lactation profiles was also quantified. A total of 8,199 net energy intake (NEI) test-day records from 2,505 lactations on 1,290 cows were used. Derived efficiency traits were either ratio based or residual based; the latter were derived from least squares regression models. Residual energy intake (REI) was defined as NEI minus predicted energy requirements based on lactation performance; residual energy production (REP) was defined as net energy for lactation minus predicted energy requirements based on lactation performance. Energy conversion efficiency was defined as net energy for lactation divided by NEI. Pearson phenotypic correlations among traits were computed across lactation stages and parities, and the significance of the differences was determined using the Fisher r-to-z transformation. Sources of variation in the feed efficiency metrics were investigated using linear mixed models, which included the fixed effects of contemporary group, breed, parity, stage of lactation, and the 2-way interaction of parity by stage of lactation. With the exception of REI, parity was associated with all efficiency and production traits. Stage of lactation, as well as the 2-way interaction of parity by stage of lactation, were associated with all efficiency and production traits. Phenotypic correlations among the efficiency and production traits differed not only by stage of lactation but also by parity. For example, the strong phenotypic correlation between REI and energy balance (EB; 0.89) for cows in parity 3 or greater and early lactation was weaker for parity 1 cows at the same lactation stage (0.81), suggesting primiparous cows use the ingested energy for both milk production and growth. Nonetheless, these strong phenotypic correlations between REI and EB suggested negative REI animals (i.e., more efficient) are also in more negative EB. These correlations were further supported when assessing the effect on phenotypic performance of animals genetically divergent for feed intake and efficiency based on parental average. Animals genetically selected to have lower REI resulted in cows who consumed less NEI but were also in negative EB throughout the entire lactation. Nonetheless, such repercussions of negative EB do not imply that selection for negative REI (as defined here) should not be practiced, but instead should be undertaken within the framework of a balanced breeding objective, which includes traits such as reproduction and health. The effect of sward type, grass only (GO) or grass white clover (GWc), on lactating dairy cow feeding behaviour, herbage depletion rate and rumen function was investigated in rotationally strip-grazed swards at a daily herbage allowance of 17 kg dry matter (DM)/cow/day, in two experiments. In 2011, eight rumen-cannulated cows were blocked into two groups and allocated to each sward type for a 14-day period in a change-over design (2 sward types×2 periods) on three occasions: late spring, summer, and autumn. Feeding behaviour, rumen pH and rumen volatile fatty acids and ammonia contents were measured. Following a continuous design, in 2012 feeding behaviour and herbage depletion rate measurements were undertaken at similar times to those in 2011 over 2–3 weeks in late spring, summer and autumn. Twenty-six (spring) and 36 (summer and autumn) cows were used. Grazing sward height (GSH) was measured five times/day. The percentage of grazed vegetative units, and the extended tiller height, free leaf lamina, tiller DM weight and tiller leaf DM weight of perennial ryegrass (ryegrass) tillers were estimated four times/day. During late spring, summer and autumn, sward white clover content (DM basis) was 7.5%, 8.8% and 30.9%, respectively, in 2011, and 18.0%, 29.7% and 30.6%, respectively, in 2012. In 2011 cows had similar grazing times on both sward types. Cows on GWc spent less time ruminating than cows on GO. Cows had similar total volatile fatty acids on both swards but the isoacids and d -lactic acid percentages, ammonia content and rumen pH were higher in autumn for cows grazing GWc. In 2012, cows on GWc grazed for longer in late spring, ruminated for less time in summer and for less time at night in autumn compared to cows grazing the GO sward. Both sward types had similar post-grazing sward heights and sward height depletion rates, except during morning grazing in autumn, when GWc had a greater sward height depletion rate. A similar percentage of grazed ryegrass tillers was observed between sward types, but the percentage of ryegrass grazed was greater than the percentage of white clover grazed in the GWc swards. The ryegrass tillers in the GWc swards were smaller than those in the GO swards but had similar depletion rates. The GWc swards influenced cow feeding behaviour and rumen characteristics with increased effect in autumn because of an increase in white clover content and a decrease in ryegrass quality.

peer-reviewed The superior milk production efficiency of Jersey (JE) and Jersey × Holstein-Friesian (JE × HF) cows compared with Holstein-Friesian (HF) has been widely published. The biological differences among dairy cow genotypes, which could contribute to the milk production efficiency differences, have not been as widely studied however. A series of component studies were conducted using cows sourced from a longer-term genotype comparison study (JE, JE × HF, and HF). The objectives were to (1) determine if differences exist among genotypes regarding gastrointestinal tract (GIT) weight, (2) assess and quantify whether the genotypes tested differ in their ability to digest perennial ryegrass, and (3) examine the relative abundance of specific rumen microbial populations potentially relating to feed digestibility. Over 3 yr, the GIT weight was obtained from 33 HF, 35 JE, and 27 JE × HF nonlactating cows postslaughter. During the dry period the cows were offered a perennial ryegrass silage diet at maintenance level. The unadjusted GIT weight was heavier for the HF than for JE and JE × HF. When expressed as a proportion of body weight (BW), JE and JE × HF had a heavier GIT weight than HF. In vivo digestibility was evaluated on 16 each of JE, JE × HF, and HF lactating dairy cows. Cows were individually stalled, allowing for the total collection of feces and were offered freshly cut grass twice daily. During this time, daily milk yield, BW, and dry matter intake (DMI) were greater for HF and JE × HF than for JE; milk fat and protein concentration ranked oppositely. Daily milk solids yield did not differ among the 3 genotypes. Intake capacity, expressed as DMI per BW, tended to be different among treatments, with JE having the greatest DMI per BW, HF the lowest, and JE × HF being intermediate. Production efficiency, expressed as milk solids per DMI, was higher for JE than HF and JE × HF. Digestive efficiency, expressed as digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, N, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber, was higher for JE than HF. In grazing cows (n = 15 per genotype) samples of rumen fluid, collected using a transesophageal sampling device, were analyzed to determine the relative abundance of rumen microbial populations of cellulolytic bacteria, protozoa, and fungi. These are critically important for fermentation of feed into short-chain fatty acids. A decrease was observed in the relative abundance of Ruminococcus flavefaciens in the JE rumen compared with HF and JE × HF. We can deduce from this study that the JE genotype has greater digestibility and a different rumen microbial population than HF. Jersey and JE × HF cows had a proportionally greater GIT weight than HF. These differences are likely to contribute to the production efficiency differences among genotypes previously reported.

The prediction of grass dry matter intake (GDMI) and milk yield (MY) are important to aid sward and grazing management decision making. Previous evaluations of the GrazeIn model identified weaknesses in the prediction of GDMI and MY for grazing dairy cows. To increase the accuracy of GDMI and MY prediction, GrazeIn was adapted, and then re-evaluated, using a data set of 3960 individual cow measurements. The adaptation process was completed in four additive steps with different components of the model reparameterised or altered. These components were: (1) intake capacity (IC) that was increased by 5% to reduce a general GDMI underprediction. This resulted in a correction of the GDMI mean and a lower relative prediction error (RPE) for the total data set, and at all stages of lactation, compared with the original model; (2) body fat reserve (BFR) deposition from 84 days in milk to next calving that was included in the model. This partitioned some energy to BFR deposition after body condition score nadir had been reached. This reduced total energy available for milk production, reducing the overprediction of MY and reducing RPE for MY in mid and late lactation, compared with the previous step. There was no effect on predicted GDMI; (3) The potential milk curve was reparameterised by optimising the rate of decrease in the theoretical hormone related to secretory cell differentiation and the basal rate of secretory cell death to achieve the lowest possible mean prediction error (MPE) for MY. This resulted in a reduction in the RPE for MY and an increase in the RPE for GDMI in all stages of lactation compared with the previous step; and (4) finally, IC was optimised, for GDMI, to achieve the lowest possible MPE. This resulted in an IC correction coefficient of 1.11. This increased the RPE for MY but decreased the RPE for GDMI compared with the previous step. Compared with the original model, modifying this combination of four model components improved the prediction accuracy of MY, particularly in late lactation with a decrease in RPE from 27.8% in the original model to 22.1% in the adapted model. However, testing of the adapted model using an independent data set would be beneficial and necessary to make definitive conclusions on improved predictions.

The excretion of urine by dairy cows provides a source of nitrogen (N) to pasture. Excess N from urine patches can be lost through nitrate (NO 3 − ) leaching and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions. Dicyandiamide (DCD) inhibits nitrification in the soil and is usually applied to the pasture by blanket spreading the entire field. This study assessed the potential of pulse-dosing cows with DCD so that the DCD will be excreted in the urine and deposited directly onto the urine patches. The objective of this study was to measure the recovery of DCD in urine and faeces and to assess the effects of DCD on rumen and blood metabolites and diet digestibility. Eight non-lactating Holstein–Friesian dairy cows fitted with rumen cannulae were assigned to two treatments in a Latin square design over two periods. The two treatments used were (1) control (CON) consisting of 500 ml distilled water and (2) DCD consisting of 0.1 g DCD per kg liveweight (LW) suspended in 500 ml distilled water. Both treatments were pulse-dosed into the rumen daily for 6 days with half the volume dosed in the morning and the remainder in the afternoon. The administration of DCD into the rumen had no effect on rumen and blood metabolites, and diet digestibility when compared to the control treatment, as all were not significantly different from the control treatment and were within the normal biological range. During 6 days of dosing with DCD the average recovery of the dosed DCD in urine was 82.3%, with a further 2.1% recovered in the faeces. No DCD was recovered in the urine and faeces 10 days following the cessation of dosing. These results could provide the basis for a novel mitigation strategy to reduce NO 3 − leaching and N 2 O emissions from urine patches in grazed grassland.

Cow energy balance is known to be associated with cow health and fertility; therefore, routine access to data on energy balance can be useful in both management and breeding decisions to improve cow performance. The objective of this study was to determine if individual cow milk mid-infrared spectra (MIR) could be useful to predict cow energy balance across contrasting production systems. Direct energy balance was calculated as the differential between energy intake and energy output in milk and maintenance (maintenance was predicted using body weight). Body energy content was calculated from (change in) body weight and body condition score. Following editing, 2,992 morning, 2,742 midday, and 2,989 evening milk MIR records from 564 lactations on 337 Scottish cows, managed in a confinement system on 1 of 2 diets, were available. An additional 844 morning and 820 evening milk spectral records from 338 lactations on 244 Irish cows offered a predominantly grazed grass diet were also available. Equations were developed to predict body energy status using the milk spectral data and milk yield as predictor variables. Several different approaches were used to test the robustness of the equations calibrated in one data set and validated in another. The analyses clearly showed that the variation in the validation data set must be represented in the calibration data set. The accuracy (i.e., square root of the coefficient of multiple determinations) of predicting, from MIR, direct energy balance, body energy content, and energy intake was 0.47 to 0.69, 0.51 to 0.56, and 0.76 to 0.80, respectively. This highlights the ability of milk MIR to predict body energy balance, energy content, and energy intake with reasonable accuracy Very high accuracy, however, was not expected, given the likely random errors in the calculation of these energy status traits using field data.

This study compared the enteric CH(4) emissions and milk production of cows offered various grass-based diets during mid to late lactation. Forty-eight spring-calving Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 nutritional treatments for 8 wk: (1) low grass allowance (LGA) + partial mixed ration (PMR), (2) high grass allowance (HGA), or (3) LGA. The PMR group received an allocation of 13.9 kg of grass dry matter (DM)/cow per day and in addition were offered 4.1 kg of PMR DM/cow per day. The HGA group received an allocation of 19.3 kg of grass DM/cow per day and the LGA group received an allocation of 14.4 kg of grass DM/cow per day. The PMR offered was composed of 450 g of maize silage/kg of DM, 450 g of concentrate blend/kg of DM, and 100g of barley straw/kg of DM. Daily CH(4) emissions were determined using the emissions from ruminants using a calibrated tracer technique, using sulfur hexafluoride, for 5 consecutive days during 2 periods. Simultaneously, grass DM intake (DMI) was estimated using the n-alkane technique and the PMR DMI was also recorded. Cows offered PMR had higher DMI than either the HGA or LGA cows (16.5 vs. 14.9 and 13.9 kg of DM/d). The higher DMI of PMR cows increased milk production relative to HGA and LGA cows: milk yield (17.0 vs. 14.6 and 13.1 kg) and fat and protein yield (1.29 vs. 1.14 and 1.04 kg). Daily CH(4) emissions were higher for the PMR group than for the HGA and LGA groups (406 vs. 384 and 349 g/cow per day). The enteric CH(4) emissions intensity per unit of DMI, milk yield, solids-corrected milk yield, and fat and protein yield did not differ between treatments. Effects observed in the PMR treatment were due to an increase in DMI rather than to any nutritional characteristic of the PMR.

Understanding rumen microbial ecology is essential for the development of feed systems designed to improve livestock productivity, health and for methane mitigation strategies from cattle. Although rumen microbial communities have been studied previously, few studies have applied next-generation sequencing technologies to that ecosystem. The aim of this study was to characterize changes in microbial community structure arising from feeding dairy cows two widely used diets: pasture and total mixed ration (TMR). Bacterial, archaeal and protozoal communities were characterized by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism of the amplified SSU rRNA gene and statistical analysis showed that bacterial and archaeal communities were significantly affected by diet, whereas no effect was observed for the protozoal community. Deep amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene revealed significant differences in the bacterial communities between the diets and between rumen solid and liquid content. At the family level, some important groups of rumen bacteria were clearly associated with specific diets, including the higher abundance of the Fibrobacteraceae in TMR solid samples and members of the propionate-producing Veillonelaceae in pasture samples. This study will be relevant to the study of rumen microbial ecology and livestock feed management.

Summary In 2006, after 44 years of eradication of malaria, Jamaica had an outbreak of Plasmodium falciparum: 406 confirmed cases between September 2006 and December 2009 with a peak of the epidemic in December 2006. In response to the outbreak, the Ministry of Health launched an emergency response through early detection and prompt treatment of cases, vector control, public education and intersectoral collaboration. Ninety percent (361) of cases were residents of Kingston, and 63.6% were identified through house to house surveillance visits. For 56% of the confirmed cases, treatment with chloroquine was initiated within a week of onset of symptoms. Only one (0.3%) of 358 cases who had a post-treatment smear on day 7 had a persistent asexual parasitaemia, while none of the 149 persons who had a follow-up smear on day 28 was positive. The outbreak highlighted the need for increased institutional capacity for surveillance, confirmation and treatment of malaria as well as effective prevention and control of outbreaks which can occur after elimination. Jamaica appears to have successfully eliminated malaria after its reintroduction. En 2006, 44 ans apres l’eradication de la malaria, la Jamaique a connu une epidemie de malaria aPlasmodium falciparum: 406 cas confirmes entre septembre 2006 et decembre 2009 avec un pic de l’epidemie en decembre 2006. En reponse a l’epidemie, le Ministere de la Sante a lance une action d’urgence par la detection precoce et le traitement rapide des cas, la lutte contre le vecteur, l’education publique et la collaboration intersectorielle. 90% (361) des cas etaient des residents de Kingston et 63,6% ont ete identifies a travers des visites de surveillance de maison a maison. Pour 56% des cas confirmes, le traitement a la chloroquine a ete initie dans la semaine suivant l’apparition des symptomes. Como respuesta al brote, el Ministerio de Salud lanzo un plan de emergencia con una deteccion temprana y un rapido tratamiento de los casos, control vectorial, educacion publica y colaboracion intersectorial. Un 90% (361) de los casos eran residentes de Kingston y 63·6% fueron identificados mediante visitas realizadas casa por casa. Para un 56% de los casos confirmados, se inicio tratamiento con cloroquina dentro de la semana siguiente a la aparicion de los sintomas. Solo uno (0·3%) de los 358 casos que tenian una lamina post-tratamiento en el dia 7 tenian una parasitemia asexual persistente, mientras que ninguna de las 149 personas que tenian una lamina de seguimiento del dia 28 era positiva. El brote epidemico enfatizo la necesidad de una mayor capacidad institucional para realizar una vigilancia, confirmacion y tratamiento de la malaria, asi como una prevencion efectiva y el control de brotes epidemicos que pueden ocurrir despues de la eliminacion. The objectives of this study were to investigate differences in grazing behavior among Holstein-Friesian (HF), Jersey (JE), and Jersey × Holstein-Friesian (F 1 ) cows under an intensive, seasonal, grass-based environment and to determine whether associations exist among grazing behavior, intake capacity, and production efficiency. Data from a total of 108 animals (37 HF, 34 JE, and 37F 1 ) were available for analysis. Measurements included milk production, body weight (BW), intake, and grazing behavior. Breed group had a significant effect on all of the production, grass dry matter intake, and efficiency parameters investigated. No differences were observed among the breeds for grazing time, number of grazing bouts, grazing bout duration, and total number of bites. Grazing mastications were higher for the JE cows compared with the HF cows. Grass dry matter intake per bite and rate of intake per minute were higher for the HF cows compared with the JE cows. Large differences between the breeds were apparent when grazing behavior measurements were expressed per unit of BW and per unit of intake. In absolute terms, the HF cows spent more time ruminating and had more mastications during rumination than the JE cows. However, when expressed per unit of BW, ruminating time was greater for the JE cows and they tended to have more ruminating mastications compared with the HF cows. Despite these differences, ruminating time and ruminating mastications per unit of intake were similar for the 2 breeds. For the most part, the F 1 cows tended to be similar to the mid-parent mean, but results showed an increase in biting rate, lower grazing duration per bout, and a tendency to achieve a high intake per bite compared with the average of the parent breeds. The results obtained also indicate that inherent grazing and ruminating differences exist between cows varying in intake capacity and production efficiency. Cows with higher intake capacities have increased grazing time and rate of intake per unit of BW. Increased production efficiency, on the other hand, appears to be aided, in particular by improvements in mastication behavior during grazing.

The objective of this experiment was to compare the effects of two concentrate feeding strategies offered with a grass silage and maize silage diet on the dry matter (DM) intake, milk production (MP) and estimated energy balance of autumn calved dairy cows. Over a 2-year period, 180 autumn calving Holstein Friesian cows were examined. Within year, cows were blocked into three MP sub-groups (n=9) (high (HMP), medium (MMP) and low (LMP)) based on the average MP data from weeks 3 and 4 of lactation. Within a block cows were randomly assigned to one of two treatments (n=54), flat rate (FR) concentrate feeding or feed to yield (FY) based on MP sub-group. Cows on the FR treatment were offered a fixed rate of concentrate (5.5 kg DM/cow per day) irrespective of MP sub-group. In the FY treatment HMP, MMP and LMP cows were allocated 7.3, 5.5 and 3.7 kg DM of concentrate, respectively. The mean concentrate offered to the FR and FY treatments was the same. On the FR treatment there was no significant difference in total dry matter intake (TDMI, 17.3 kg) between MP sub-groups. In the FY treatment, however, the TDMI of HMP-FY was 2.2 kg greater than MMP-FY, and 4.5 kg greater than LMP-FY (15.2 kg DM). The milk yield of LMP-FR was 3.5 kg less than the mean of the HMP-FR and MMP-FR treatments (24.5 kg). The milk yield of the HMP-FY treatment was 3.6 and 7.9 kg greater than the MMP-FY and LMP-FY treatments, respectively. The difference in MP between the HMP sub-groups was 2.6 kg, which translates to a response of 1.4 kg of milk per additional 1 kg of concentrate offered. There was no significant difference in MP between the two LMP sub-groups; however, MP increased 0.8 kg per additional 1 kg of concentrate offered between cows on the LMP-FR and LMP-FY treatments. The estimated energy balance was positive for cows on the LMP-FR treatment, but negative for cows on the other treatments. The experiment highlights the variation within a herd in MP response to concentrate, as cows with a lower MP potential are less responsive to additional energy input than cows with a greater MP potential. Cows with a greater MP capacity did not substitute additional concentrate for the basal forage, which indicates an additional demand for energy based on ability of individual cows to produce milk.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of providing paper or rope, alternative enriching substrates to straw, to piglets in farrowing crates on piglet and sow welfare. Sixty multiparous sows and their litters were housed in crates that were either barren (BARREN), enriched with shredded paper (PAPER) or natural fibre rope (ROPE). Enriching substrates were introduced when piglets were 10 days old. The proportion of sows with udder and teat lesions before parturition and at weaning was recorded. Piglet facial lesions were scored according to severity on days 11, 18 and 27. Sow and piglet behaviour was recorded using scan sampling on days 14, 18, 22 and 26. Furthermore, the behaviour of one male and one female focal piglet per litter was recorded continuously for 10 min twice per day on days 14, 18, 22 and 26. On day 27 post-partum, focal piglets were observed for 5 min in a novel arena and for a further 5 min after a novel object was introduced. On day 27, there was a tendency for more BARREN sows to have teat lesions ( P = 0.07). PAPER litters tended to have a smaller proportion of piglets with facial lesions ( P = 0.06). ROPE piglets were active in the enriched area of the crate in more observations than BARREN and PAPER piglets ( P P P P P = 0.05). In conclusion, shredded paper improved piglet welfare and was easily incorporated into the farrowing crates.

Teeth resection is a method of controlling the injurious effects of the aggression displayed when newborn piglets fight to establish a teat order. Recent European legislation discourages the practice. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of clipping and grinding piglets’ needle teeth, compared to leaving them intact, on the welfare of piglets in farrowing crates. Six days pre-partum, 60 sows were assigned to one of three treatments. Litters had their teeth clipped (C), ground (G) or left intact (I) at birth. The time taken to carry out each procedure was recorded. Piglet weights and facial lesions, which were scored according to severity, were recorded on days 1, 4, 11, 18 and 27. Piglet weights were also recorded at birth. Mouth lesions were recorded on days 1, 4 and 27. Instantaneous scan samples of piglet behaviour were carried out for 30 min post-teeth resection procedure (1 min intervals), and for 6 h on days 1, 4, 8, 14, 21 and 26 (5 min intervals). One male and one female piglet per litter were chosen as focal animals and observed for 5 min each post-procedure and for 10 min each twice per day on days 1, 5, 12, 20 and 26. Mortalities were recorded throughout lactation. Grinding took significantly longer than clipping the teeth or leaving them intact (F = 638.87, P In conclusion, although all three options were associated with welfare problems, grinding can be recommended in preference to clipping or leaving the teeth intact.

Recent EU legislation discourages the practice of resecting piglets’ needle teeth. However, the effect of leaving piglets’ teeth intact on the welfare of sows in farrowing crates is poorly understood. Therefore, the aim of the study was to compare the effects of clipping and grinding piglets’ needle teeth, compared to leaving them intact, on the welfare of sows in farrowing crates. Six days pre-partum 60 multiparous sows were assigned to one of three treatments. Litters had their teeth clipped (C), ground (G) or left intact (I) at birth. Sows’ teats were inspected for lesions pre-partum (day −3) and on days 1, 4, 11, 18 and 27 post-partum. Instantaneous scan samples (5 min intervals) of sow behaviour were carried out during three 2 h periods on days 1, 4, 8, 14, 21 and 26. On days 1, 4 and 11 all piglets were removed from the crate for 60 min. On re-introduction of the piglets, sow maternal behaviour was recorded continuously for 20 min. The number of sows with teat lesions tended to differ between treatments on days 11 (P = 0.06) and 18 (P = 0.10). There was an interactive effect between treatment and day on sow dog-sitting behaviour throughout lactation (P There were indications that leaving the teeth intact and to a lesser extent grinding caused injury and disturbance to sows. In farrowing crates, leaving piglets’ teeth intact cannot be recommended.

We surveyed the prevalence of obesity in the general population in Jamaica, and examined the relationship between it and lifestyle. The survey population consisted of 1935 inhabitants, whose body weight, marital status, educational history, and other obesity-associated lifestyle factors were surveyed. Six major findings emerged. The first finding is that the proportion of obesity in women was very high, and there was a big gender difference. Secondly, a lower prevalence towards obesity was associated with cohabitation of the subjects in both genders, and higher educational levels in female subjects. Thirdly, the proportion of the subjects who considered their weight to be quite acceptable was higher in the obese/overweight groups in both genders, although they felt physically unfit. Fourthly, exercise frequency showed a negative correlation with the body mass index (BMI) in men but not in women, and the frequency of exercising was apparently lower in women than in men. Fifthly, as for dietary factors, in both genders, vegetables showed a negative correlation with the BMI. Finally, non-smokers were also associated with a lower obesity prevalence in men. These findings suggest that social and lifestyle factors such as the educational level, marital status and dietary habits of the general population influence Jamaican obesity.

The objectives were to assess the prevalence of self-reported non-communicable chronic diseases and ascertain factors associated with a health-seeking behaviour (blood pressure screening) following an intervention aimed at improving health-seeking behaviours. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 2093 participants aged 15–75 years in Manchester, Jamaica. The first 1660 (males, 820; females, 840) subjects are included. Hypertension was reported by 14.4% of males and 27.4% of females followed by diabetes (males 4.1%, females 7.0%) and heart disease (males 2.1%, females 3.8%). In multivariate analyses, recent blood pressure screening was explained by the presence of diabetes (males, OR 7.56, CI 2.14, 26.6; females, OR 4.82, CI 1.69, 13.78), and increasing age, (males OR 2.19, CI 1.76, 2.70; females OR 1.55, CI 1.32, 1.83). Among men, higher education (OR 1.74, CI 1.18, 2.55), and use of the mobile clinic, (a component of the intervention, OR 3.80, CI 1.92, 7.51) increased likelihood of screening while smoking (OR 0.48, CI 0.33, 0.69) and alcohol consumption (OR 0.56, CI 0.39, 0.81) were inversely related. Among women, intervention-related variables (use of Wellness Clinic OR 1.81, CI 1.12, 2.93; heard of mobile clinic, OR 1.60, CI 1.12, 2.27) increased likelihood of screening. Socio-demographic and behavioural factors were determinants of health-seeking behaviour. In addition, the intervention facilitated health-seeking behaviour of recent blood pressure screening.

A five-(5) year Joint Technical Cooperation Project between the Government of Jamaica and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was implemented with an overall goal of improving the health status of the Jamaican population by strengthening the function of the regional health system in Southern Jamaica. A joint project management team was established, comprised of Jamaican and Japanese counterparts working side by side for the duration of the project. Early activities focused on a needs analysis of organizational capacity, human resource skills, clinical activities and community lifestyles, especially in relationship to the prevention of Chronic Lifestyle Diseases (CLDs). Guided by findings from this analysis, a disease prevention model (including a mobile clinic) was first established in the parish of Manchester and then extended to the parishes of St. Elizabeth and Clarendon. Concurrently, capacity building and staff training activities were implemented with both Jamaican and Japanese inputs. The disease prevention model including free health screening (BP and BMI,) was established as planned, first in the parish of Manchester with subsequent extensions to Clarendon and St. Elizabeth. A total of 5,539 clients were seen at the end of December 2002. In spite of financial and human resource constraints (on the Jamaican side) all planned outputs were achieved although some (e.g. mobile clinic in Clarendon) were achieved later than projected dates. A detailed evaluation of lifestyle changes is pending. However, anecdotal evidence suggests positive changes among staff and clients (including community groups). The intervention facilitated strengthening of chronic lifestyle disease prevention at the community level through capacity building and human resources training which included strengthening the pioneering approach of Community Health Aide (CHA) involvement in health screening and promotion. The method of technical transfer undoubtedly played an integral role in the success of the project and could be seriously considered as an approach in other CARICOM countries with similar chronic disease challenges. International audience; Accurate grass organic matter digestibility (OMD) values are required for intake prediction, for calculating metabolisable protein and ultimately to accurately formulate diets. The three objectives of this study were: (i) to compare the neutral detergent cellulase (NDC)- and pepsin cellulase (PC)-predicted OMD to in vivo OMD; (ii) to compare the NDC method to the PC method for accurately estimating grazed grass OMD and (iii) to compare the effect of sample preparation on the NDC method results, specifically oven drying samples at 60 degrees C compared to freeze drying at 55 degrees C. Data consisted of 34 forage grass samples on which OMD was measured in vivo using the total faecal collection method in sheep (OMDINVIVO). The grass samples were also analysed in vitro in triplicate. For the NDC method the samples were oven-dried at 60 degrees C for 48 h or were freeze-dried at 55 degrees C for 1 week. The PC method samples were oven-dried at 60 degrees C for 72 h. The NDC organic matter solubility (OMS) results were inserted into the equation developed by Stakelum et al., (1988. Irish J. Agric. Res. 27, 104-105) to give OMDNDC. The OMS results from the PC method were inserted into the equation developed by Aufrere et al., (2007. INRA Prod. Anim. 20, 129-136) to give OMDPC. The comparison between OMDPC (60) (mean +/- standard error) (0.708 +/- 0.0361; n=34) and OMDINVIVO (0.719 +/- 0.0361) showed that there was a tendency for the two methods to give different results (P=0.06). The comparison between OMDNDC (FD) (0.740 +/- 0.0049; n=18) and OMDINVIVO (0.764 +/- 0.0063) showed that the two methods gave different results (P < 0.01). The comparison between OMDNDC (60) (0.680 +/- 0.0265; n=34) and OMDINVIVO (0.719 +/- 0.0361) showed that the two methods gave different results (P < 0.05). The positive correlation with OMDINVIVO suggested that OMDNDC (FD). OMDNDC (60) and OMDPC (60) were able to predict OMDINVIVO of perennial ryegrass grazed swards. The comparison between OMDNDC (FD) (0.740 +/- 0.0049) and OMDPC (60) (0.746 +/- 0.0109) showed that the two methods gave similar results (P > 0.05). The comparison between OMDNDC (60) (0.680 +/- 0.0230) and OMDPC (60) (0.708 +/- 0.0230) showed that the two methods tended to give different results (P=0.06). To improve the relationship between OMDINVIVO and OMDNDC (FD), and between OMDINVIVO and OMDNDC (60), future work should expand the number of grass samples, the months of the year over which samples are collected and the range of chemical composition and OMDINVIVO of the samples. Sample preparation method had an effect on the NDC-predicted OMD results as OMSNDC (FD) differed to OMSNDC (60) and OMDNDC (FD) differed to OMDNDC (60). This indicated that specific correction (regression) equations must be used for specific sample preparation methods.

To fill the feed deficit in the autumn/late lactation period in a seasonal grazing system, supplementation is required. This study aimed to investigate the use of baled grass silage or concentrate as supplementation to grazing dairy cows in late lactation. Eighty-four grass-based spring-calving dairy cows, averaging 212 d in milk, were allocated to 1 of 6 treatments [high grass allowance (HG), low grass allowance (LG), grass with a low concentrate allocation (GCL), grass with a low grass silage allocation (GSL), grass with a high concentrate allocation (GCH), and grass with a high grass silage allocation (GSH)] to measure the effects of using baled grass silage or concentrate as supplements to grazed grass. Effects on intake, milk yield, milk composition and N fractions, and N utilization efficiency were measured. Treatments HG and LG received 17 and 14 kg of dry matter (DM) grass/cow per d, respectively. Treatments GCL and GSL were offered 14 kg of DM grass/cow per d and 3 kg of DM of supplementation/cow per d. Treatments GCH and GSH were offered 11 kg of DM grass/cow per d and 6 kg of DM of supplementation/cow per d. Milk yield was greatest in the GCH treatment and milk solids yield was greatest in both concentrate-supplemented treatments. The HG and LG treatments excreted a greater quantity of N as a proportion of N intake than the supplemented treatments. The HG treatment also excreted the greatest total quantity of N. This indicates an improvement in N utilization efficiency when supplementation is offered compared with grazing only. Offering 6 kg of DM of either grass silage or concentrate as supplementation decreased milk true protein concentration compared with offering a grass-only diet. This suggests that increasing the proportion of supplementation relative to grass may negatively affect milk processability, which is associated with milk true protein concentration.

peer-reviewed Interest is increasing in the feed intake complex of individual dairy cows, both for management and animal breeding. However, energy intake data on an individual-cow basis are not routinely available. The objective of the present study was to quantify the ability of routinely undertaken mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy analysis of individual cow milk samples to predict individual cow energy intake and efficiency. Feed efficiency in the present study was described by residual feed intake (RFI), which is the difference between actual energy intake and energy used (e.g., milk production, maintenance, and body tissue anabolism) or supplied from body tissue mobilization. A total of 1,535 records for energy intake, RFI, and milk MIR spectral data were available from an Irish research herd across 36 different test days from 535 lactations on 378 cows. Partial least squares regression analyses were used to relate the milk MIR spectral data to either energy intake or efficiency. The coefficient of correlation (REX) of models to predict RFI across lactation ranged from 0.48 to 0.60 in an external validation data set; the predictive ability was, however, strongest (REX = 0.65) in early lactation (

The main goal of this study was to develop, apply, and validate a new method to predict an indicator for CH 4 eructed by dairy cows using milk mid-infrared (MIR) spectra. A novel feature of this model was the consideration of lactation stage to reflect changes in the metabolic status of the cow. A total of 446 daily CH 4 measurements were obtained using the SF 6 method on 142 Jersey, Holstein, and Holstein-Jersey cows. The corresponding milk samples were collected during these CH 4 measurements and were analyzed using MIR spectroscopy. A first derivative was applied to the milk MIR spectra. To validate the novel calibration equation incorporating days in milk (DIM), 2 calibration processes were developed: the first was based only on CH 4 measurements and milk MIR spectra (independent of lactation stage; ILS); the second included milk MIR spectra and DIM information (dependent on lactation stage; DLS) by using linear and quadratic modified Legendre polynomials. The coefficients of determination of ILS and DLS equations were 0.77 and 0.75, respectively, with standard error of calibration of 63g/d of CH 4 for both calibration equations. These equations were applied to 1,674,763 milk MIR spectra from Holstein cows in the first 3 parities and between 5 and 365 DIM. The average CH 4 indicators were 428, 444, and 448g/d by ILS and 444, 467, and 471g/d by DLS for cows in first, second, and third lactation, respectively. Behavior of the DLS indicator throughout the lactations was in agreement with the literature with values increasing between 0 and 100 DIM and decreasing thereafter. Conversely, the ILS indicator of CH 4 emission decreased at the beginning of the lactation and increased until the end of the lactation, which differs from the literature. Therefore, the DLS indicator seems to better reflect biological processes that drive CH 4 emissions than the ILS indicator. The ILS and DLS equations were applied to an independent data set, which included 59 respiration chamber measurements of CH 4 obtained from animals of a different breed across a different production system. Results indicated that the DLS equation was much more robust than the ILS equation allowing development of indicators of CH 4 emissions by dairy cows. Integration of DIM information into the prediction equation was found to be a good strategy to obtain biologically meaningful CH 4 values from lactating cows by accounting for biological changes that occur throughout the lactation.

The objective of this study was to compare the milk production, dry matter intake, and energy partitioning of autumn-calving Holstein-Friesian cows offered a high or low amount of concentrate using 1 of 2 feeding strategies. One hundred and eight autumn-calving Holstein-Friesian cows were blocked based on milk production data from wk 3 and 4 of lactation, and were divided into low-, medium-, and high-milk yield subgroups. Cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatments (n=27) in a 2×2 factorial design. Treatment factors were concentrate feeding amount, high concentrate=7.0 (Hi) or low concentrate=4.0kg of DM/cow per day (Lo), and concentrate feeding strategy, flat rate (FR) or group-fed to yield (GFY). In the GFY treatments, cows were allocated concentrate based on their milk yield in the third and fourth weeks of lactation. The lowest-yielding cows (n=9) received 5.3 and 2.3kg of DM of concentrate on the Hi and Lo treatments respectively, the highest-yielding cows (n=9) received 8.7 and 5.7kg of DM of concentrate on the Hi and Lo treatments respectively, and the average yield cows received the same amount of concentrate as the corresponding FR group (i.e., 7.0 and 4.0kg of DM of concentrate on the Hi and Lo treatments, respectively). The proportion of forage in the diet was 63% of total dry matter intake (TDMI) for the Hi treatment and 75% of TDMI for the Lo treatment. No significant interaction was noted between concentrate feeding amount and concentrate feeding strategy for dry matter intake or milk yield. Cows on the Hi treatment had a higher TDMI (18.7±0.36kg/cow per day) compared with cows on the Lo treatment (15.8±0.36kg/cow per day). The milk yield of cows offered the Hi treatment was 1.3kg/cow per day higher than the milk yield of cows on the Lo treatment (23.8±0.31kg/cow per day). Milk solids yield was 0.10kg/cow per day higher on the Hi treatment than on the Lo treatment (1.83±0.03kg of DM/cow per day). Cows on the Hi treatment had an estimated net energy demand of 18.0±0.38 UFL (unite fourragere lait)/cow per day and a net energy intake of 17.6±0.33 UFL/cow per day during the experimental period. Cows on the Lo treatment had an energy demand of 16.8±0.38 UFL/cow per day and an energy intake of 14.9±0.33 UFL/cow per day. No significant difference in TDMI, milk yield, milk solids yield, or energy balance was observed between the FR and GFY treatments. By increasing the total amount of concentrate offered, cows had higher TDMI and energy intake, which resulted in increased milk production and reduced negative energy balance and body condition score loss.

peer-reviewed The grass plant comprises leaf, pseudostem, true stem (including inflorescence) and dead material. These components differ in digestibility, and variations in their relative proportions can affect sward quality. The objective of this study was to determine the change in the proportion and organic matter digestibility (OMD) of leaf, pseudostem, true stem and dead components of four perennial ryegrass cultivars (two tetraploids: Astonenergy and Bealey and two diploids: Abermagic and Spelga) throughout a grazing season. The DM proportions and in vitro OMD of leaf, pseudostem, true stem and dead in all cultivars were determined during ten grazing rotations between May 2011 and March 2012. There was an interaction between rotation and cultivar for leaf, pseudostem, true stem and dead proportions. In May and June, Astonenergy had the highest leaf and lowest true stem proportion (P < 0·05). From July onwards, there was no difference in leaf or true stem proportion between cultivars. Bealey had the highest annual mean OMD (752 g kg−1) and Spelga the lowest (696 g kg−1; P < 0·05). The OMD followed the order leaf > pseudostem > true stem > dead. Bealey had the highest combined leaf and pseudostem proportion 0·92, which explains why it had the highest OMD. In this study, the tetraploid cultivars had the highest leaf and pseudostem proportion and OMD. For accurate descriptions of a sward in grazing studies and to accurately determine sward morphological composition, pseudostem should be separated from true stem, particularly during the reproductive stage when true stem is present.
