Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability; its symptoms interfere with social, occupational, interpersonal, and academic functioning. However, the diagnosis of MDD is still made by phenomenological approach. The advent of neuroimaging techniques allowed numerous studies to use resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs‐fMRI) and estimate functional connectivity for brain‐disease identification. Recently, attempts have been made to investigate effective connectivity (EC) that represents causal relations among regions of interest. In the meantime, to identify meaningful phenotypes for clinical diagnosis, graph‐based approaches such as graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have been leveraged recently to explore complex pairwise similarities in imaging/nonimaging features among subjects. In this study, we validate the use of EC for MDD identification by estimating its measures via a group sparse representation along with a structured equation modeling approach in a whole‐brain data‐driven manner from rs‐fMRI. To distinguish drug‐naïve MDD patients from healthy controls, we utilize spectral GCNs based on a population graph to successfully integrate EC and nonimaging phenotypic information. Furthermore, we devise a novel sensitivity analysis method to investigate the discriminant connections for MDD identification in our trained GCNs. Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook (BGK) models are widely used to study rarefied gas dynamics. However, as simplified versions of the Boltzmann collision model, their performances are uncertain and need to be carefully investigated in highly nonequilibrium flows. In this study, several common BGK models, such as the ellipsoidal statistical BGK (ES-BGK) and Shakhov BGK (S-BGK) models, are theoretically analyzed using their moment equations. Then, numerical comparisons are performed between the Boltzmann collision model and BGK models based on various benchmarks, such as Fourier flow, Couette flow, and shock wave. The prediction performance of the ES-BGK model is better than that of the S-BGK model in Fourier flow, while prediction performance of the S-BGK model is better than that of the ES-BGK model in Couette flow and shock wave. However, with increasing Knudsen number or Mach number, the results of both ES-BGK and S-BGK deviate from the Boltzmann solutions. These phenomena are attributed to the incorrect governing equations of high-order moments of BGK models. To improve the performance of the current BGK models, the S-BGK model is extended by adding more high-order moments into the target distribution function of the original one. Our analytical and numerical results demonstrate that the extended S-BGK (S-BGK+) model provides the same relaxation coefficients as the Boltzmann collision model for the production terms of high-order moment equations. Compared with the other BGK models, the proposed S-BGK+ model exhibits better performance for various flow regimes.

International audience; Motivated by improving the performance of particle based Monte-Carlo simulations in the transitional regime, Fokker-Planck kinetic models have been devised and studied as approximations of the Boltzmann collision operator. By generalizing the linear drift model, the cubic Fokker-Planck (cubic-FP) and ellipsoidal Fokker-Planck (ES-FP) have been proposed, in order to obtain the correct Prandtl number of 2/3 for a dilute monatomic gas. This study provides a close comparison between both models in low Mach and supersonic settings. While direct simulation Monte-Carlo (DSMC) here serves as the benchmark, overall close performance between cubic-FP, ES-FP and DSMC are observed. Furthermore, while the ES-FP out-performes the cubic-FP model in the shock region of the supersonic flow around a cylinder, the latter shows a better accuracy in the near continuum regime. It is argued that the reason behind these discrepancies lies in the entropy law besides the transport properties.

The stochastic particle Fokker–Planck (FP) method has been gaining increasing attention in the field of rarefied gas dynamics due to its potential to reduce the computational costs of the direct simulation Monte Carlo method. The FP method approximates the discrete binary collisions of the Boltzmann equation as continuous drift–diffusion phenomena in velocity space. Consistency between the FP method and the Boltzmann equation is achieved by matching production terms. The Maxwell molecular model has been widely used in this process due to the possibility of obtaining closed-form solutions for these production terms. However, it is well known that the Maxwell molecular model has difficulty predicting strong shock waves since it cannot provide accurate relaxation rates for the moments. By contrast, the variable hard-sphere (VHS) molecular model is able to capture the transport properties of real gases better than the Maxwell molecular model. Nonetheless, there have so far been no reports associated with an accurate VHS molecular model for the stochastic particle FP method. In this paper, two different molecular models are developed to describe a monatomic gas interacting through a VHS potential. The proposed VHS molecular models are evaluated using Grad's 13- and 26-moment distribution functions; hence, they are named the G13 and G26 molecular models. The G13 and G26 molecular models include additional nonlinear moments compared with the conventional Maxwell molecular model. A one-dimensional shock wave and two-dimensional hypersonic cylinder flow are considered for validation. The results show that the proposed molecular models perform better than the Maxwell molecular model in predicting supersonic and hypersonic shock waves.

Electronic health records (EHR) are characterized as non-stationary, heterogeneous, noisy, and sparse data; therefore, it is challenging to learn the regularities or patterns inherent within them. In particular, sparseness caused mostly by many missing values has attracted the attention of researchers, who have attempted to find a better use of all available samples for determining the solution of a primary target task through the defining a secondary imputation problem. Methodologically, existing methods, either deterministic or stochastic, have applied different assumptions to impute missing values. However, once the missing values are imputed, most existing methods do not consider the fidelity or confidence of the imputed values in the modeling of downstream tasks. Undoubtedly, an erroneous or improper imputation of missing variables can cause difficulties in modeling as well as a degraded performance. In this study, we present a novel variational recurrent network that (i) estimates the distribution of missing variables allowing to represent uncertainty in the imputed values, (ii) updates hidden states by explicitly applying fidelity based on a variance of the imputed values during a recurrence (i.e., uncertainty propagation over time), and (iii) predicts the possibility of in-hospital mortality. It is noteworthy that our model can conduct these procedures in a single stream and learn all network parameters jointly in an end-to-end manner. We validated the effectiveness of our method using the public datasets of MIMIC-III and PhysioNet challenge 2012 by comparing with and outperforming other state-of-the-art methods for mortality prediction considered in our experiments. In addition, we identified the behavior of the model that well represented the uncertainties for the imputed estimates, which indicated a high correlation between the calculated MAE and the uncertainty., 11 pages, 4 figures

The flow through a thin slit and a thin orifice is studied with the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC), cubic Fokker–Planck (FP), and a coupled FP-DSMC hybrid method. Pressure driven monatomic gas flows through a slit and an orifice with various values of degree of rarefaction and pressure ratio are computed. The DSMC method is physically accurate for all flow regimes; however it is computationally expensive in high density, near continuum regions. An alternative stochastic particle scheme, the cubic FP kinetic model has addressed this issue by approximating the particle collisions involved in the Boltzmann collision integral with continuous stochastic processes. The ability of the cubic FP method to reproduce breakdown of translational equilibrium is discussed. In addition, a coupled FP-DSMC hybrid scheme is employed aiming at an efficient and accurate solution. The FP-DSMC hybrid scheme employs DSMC in rarefied regions and FP method in near continuum flow regions. Numerical procedures of the cubic FP method are implemented within the framework of an existing DSMC-solver, SPARTA. The FP-DSMC hybrid solution reproduces pure DSMC solution with improved computational efficiency up to a factor of eight for vacuum flow through a thin slit.

Hypersonic aerothermodynamics for a probe entering a planetary atmosphere is an important issue in space exploration. The probe experiences various Knudsen number regimes, ranging from rarefied to continuum, due to density variation in the planet’s atmosphere. To simulate such multiscale flows, a novel hybrid particle scheme is employed in the present work. The hybrid particle scheme employs the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method in rarefied flow regions and the low diffusion (LD) particle method in continuum flow regions. Numerical procedures in the low diffusion particle method are implemented within an existing DSMC algorithm. The hybrid scheme is assessed using two hypersonic, blunt body flow problems: Mach 10 nitrogen flow over a sphere, and Mach 40 carbon dioxide flow over the Mars Path Finder each with a global Knudsen number of 0.002. Standard DSMC and CFD results are compared with the LD-DSMC hybrid simulation results. The hybrid scheme results show good overall agreement with results from standard DSMC computation, while CFD is inaccurate especially in the wake where a highly rarefied region exists. The LD-DSMC hybrid solution is able to increase computational efficiency upto 50% in run time in comparison to DSMC. And sensitivity to numerical parameters of the LD-DSMC method is also studied.

Electronic health records (EHR) have become an important source of a patient data but characterized by a variety of missing values. Using the variational inference of Bayesian framework, variational autoencoder (VAE), a deep generative model, has been shown to be efficient and accurate to capture the latent structure of complex high-dimensional data. Recently, it has been used for missing data imputation. In this paper, we propose a general framework that incorporates effective missing data imputation using VAE and multivariate time series prediction. We utilize the uncertainty obtained from the generative network of the VAE and employ uncertainty-aware attention in imputing the missing values. We evaluated the performance of our architecture on real-world clinical dataset (MIMIC-III) for in-hospital mortality prediction task. Our results showed higher performance than other competing methods in mortality prediction task.

Pressure driven nitrogen expansion gas flows with two different pressure ratios are investigated at Knudsen number 0.001. The DSMC method is physically accurate for all flow regime; however it is computationally expensive in high density or near continuum regions. The Fokker-Planck-DSMC hybrid scheme employs DSMC in rarefied regions and Fokker-Planck method in near continuum flow regions for an efficient and accurate solution. Numerical procedures of the cubic Fokker-Planck method are implemented within the framework of an existing DSMC-solver, SPARTA. The Fokker-Planck-DSMC hybrid solution reproduces pure DSMC solution with improved computational efficiency up to a factor of five for vacuum flow through a thin orifice. In addition, breakdown of translational equilibrium is investigated. Domain criterion of FP-DSMC is safely smaller than Bird's breakdown criterion.

In this paper, we propose a novel architecture of a deep neural network for EEG-based motor imagery classification. Unlike the existing deep neural networks in the literature, the proposed network allows us to analyze the learned network weights from a neurophysiological perspective, thus providing an insight into the underlying patterns inherent in motor imagery induced EEG signals. In order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conducted experiments on the BCI Competition IV-IIa dataset by comparing with the competing methods in terms of the Cohen's k value. For qualitative analysis, we also performed visual inspection of the activation patterns estimated from the learned network weights.

Also, a module initializing the LD-DSMC hybrid method with a Navier-Stokes solution is developed. The initialized solution agrees well with DSMC and requires only 45% of the resources.

The performance of the LD‐DSMC approach is assessed by studying Mach 10 nitrogen flow over a sphere with a global Knudsen number of 0.002. The hybrid scheme results show good overall agreement with results from standard DSMC and CFD computation. Subcell procedures are utilized to improve computational efficiency and reduce sensitivity to DSMC cell size in the hybrid scheme. This makes it possible to perform the LD‐DSMC simulation on a much coarser mesh that leads to a significant reduction in computation time.
