The article focuses on the argumentative character of the eulogy, a speech that is part of a funeral ritual and serves to console the community of the bereaved. It aims to contribute to the understanding of eulogy as a specific argumentative practice by identifying the argumentative patterns that occur in it. A pragma-dialectical approach to the study of argumentation is used, allowing for the description of prototypical (theoretically expected) and stereotypical (frequent in use) argumentative patterns. To probe the empirical plausibility of the argumentative character of eulogy, the research is limited to a type of secular eulogy that was historically established in Czechoslovakia during the communist period (1948–1989). This type is chosen here for pragmatic reasons (easy access to data and researcher's familiarity with the language of the data). It is shown that in secular eulogy, arguments in favour of reconciliation with death and honouring the deceased are typically presented. Prototypical and stereotypical patterns are examined with concern for the structure of these arguments, and the argumentative and content analysis is extended by identification of specific propositional content of sub-arguments. It is also proposed examining the variability of argumentative patterns with respect to the type of the deceased (male/female, short/long life experience, significant/insignificant social status). From the 1930s until the time of her death in 1955, Mary McLeod Bethune was the most well-known African American woman in the United States. A race and gender leader commonly referred to as the "First Lady of the Struggle," Bethune famously led the largest black women's club, had regular meetings in the White House, and helped with the founding of the United Nations. Because of her achievements, Bethune's name and likeness have been used on a U.S. postal stamp, numerous schools, and statues. This article examines two memorials to Bethune—showing how Bethune's words and likeness have been used as a historical corrective, as well as an extension of the legacy that Bethune determined to leave before she died in 1955. First, I examine the National Council of Negro Women's many frustrating years of fundraising for a Bethune memorial in Lincoln Park in Washington, D.C. That memorial, erected in 1974, became the first statue of a woman or an African American person dedicated on federal land in the U.S. capital. The second statue I examine is the 2022 statue of Bethune erected in the U.S. Capitol Building. There, the state of Florida decided to replace its long-standing statue of a white, male Confederate general in favor of a newly commissioned statue of Bethune, a black, female educator and civil rights leader as a way to rehabilitate and redefine the state's image. Finally, the article shows how Bethune had hoped to be memorialized by her survivors, as evidenced in the form of an auto-eulogy, an essay that she wrote for future generations of readers. On 2 August 2023, Prof. Dr. Winfried Haunerland passed away at the age of 67 after a serious illness and was buried on 11 August 2023 at the Waldfriedhof in Munich - in the grave of Joseph Pascher (1893-1979), who was one of his most influential predecessors there as professor of liturgical studies and director of the supradiocesan seminary Herzogliches Georgianum, and played a key role in the liturgical renewal of the church in the 20th century. On 24 October 2023, the Faculty of Catholic Theology at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität commemorated its deceased professor in a separate requiem. Perhaps in 383, Gregory of Nyssa wrote a eulogy for the Day of Lights, which fell on 6 January and replaced the previously celebrated Epiphany. The introduction of Christmas in Cappadocia on 25 December prompted the bishop to link the January feast with the baptismal theme. In the middle part of the speech, Gregory successively cites and interprets ten different events from the Old Testament that illustrate the mystery of baptism. The combination and interpretation of these testimonies in the key of baptismal typology prompts the article’s author to look at the sources of inspiration for Gregory’s exegesis and the extent of its influence. How do newspapers frame female politicians, and does this framing change after a female politician's death during an election campaign? Benazir Bhutto, who served two terms as prime minister of Pakistan, was assassinated in 2007 by a terrorist group. South Asian newspapers framed her as corrupt, inefficient, and a threat to national security before her death; however, the elite press characterized her as a martyr and sage posthumously. Using qualitative content analysis, this study examines the editorial coverage of two newspapers (The Hindu and The Times of India) in India and two newspapers (The News and The Dawn) in Pakistan to examine how these elite newspapers framed Benazir Bhutto before and after her tragic death. We found that the framing of the slain leader changed from negative to positive after her assassination. The study concludes that her assassination influenced the media coverage and produced a eulogy effect that helped her party stay in power after her assassination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this contribution, we will proceed in three steps. First of all, we will investigate the rhetorical approach for studying the Pauline letters, considering different methodological options. In this context, we will propose the approach of the literary rhetoric as the most valid. Secondly, we will analyse the autobiographical text of Philippians 3:1–4:1, starting from its delimitation, textual criticism, and its arrangement, according to oral and discursive models. Then, we will proceed with genre and literary origins; here, we will discover the periautologia as the point of reference of the Pauline autobiography. This eulogy of self is a genre, well known in the rhetorical tradition, to which Plutarch dedicated the treatise On praising oneself. This discovery determines the following exegetical analysis of the text. Thirdly, we will conclude with a reflection about Paul's way of speaking about himself in this passage. In light of ancient rhetorical heritage, he does not use his autobiography to praise himself but to praise Christ, who completely changed his life. Ultimately, Paul's talk about himself is a way of talking about Christ for the benefit of the addressees who should creatively imitate the Apostle and his Christian life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article explores the so-called Pesnivec, which contains Psalms with commentaries by Pseudo-Athanasius of Alexandria (in fact, its autor is Hesychios of Jerusalem). Тhe manuscript, also known as the Sofia Psalter, is kept currently in the Archive of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (cod. NA–BAN 2; GIM, Ščukin 3). The Codex was written in 1337 for tzar Ivan Alexander (1331–1371) according to the colophon on f. 311r, which is part of the Eulogy to Tzar Ivan Alexander. The Psalter consists of 317 parchment folios, 312 of which were written by two main copyists. The author of the article aims to identify at the orthographic level which features are intrinsic to the copyists and which to the manuscript from which they have been copied, in order to establish the hypothetical antigraph of the codex. On the basis of the analysis the conclusion is reached that the Pesnivec was copied from a Middle Bulgarian manuscript of the 13th century of East Bulgarian origin with preserved traces of an older Cyrillic tradition. The history of the sermon that Matthew Parker preached at the funeral of Martin Bucer is more complicated than has been thought. It is generally known that the first printing of 1551 was subsequently translated from English into Latin for a European audience in 1562 (printed in that year and again in 1577), and then published in English a second time, in a 1587 imprint that is thought to be a second edition. What is not generally known is that the second English printing was a translation of the 1562/1577 Latin version, and that in the process of translation and re-translation, Parker's original sermon was stripped of nearly 60 per cent of its content, as a eulogy that followed the sermon was misattributed to Walter Haddon at some point just prior to 1562. The present article seeks to explain how this came to pass, and argues that the 1551 imprint should replace the 1587 as the primary text for what Parker said of Bucer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper argues that as poetics in the Song Dynasty developed, the thinking mode and methods of written expression in Chan Buddhism provided a theoretical reference and creative practical experience for the formation of poetic theories. This point is particularly evident in the formation of the "flexible method", which was a key theory in poetics of the Song Dynasty. The theory comprises three layers of meaning: it advocates respecting forms, changing the meaning of those forms, and retaining the inherent grace of the forms through a natural and fluent syntax and rhetoric of "defamiliarization". This theory was highly mature in the writing of Lv Benzhong of the Southern Song Dynasty. Xuedou Chongxian (980–1052), a sixth-generation Chan Buddhist at Xuedou Temple, made a vital contribution to its development, which is highlighted by studying the "Hundred Classic Eulogies". Xuedou Chongxian initially constructed the connotation and system of the theory of the "flexible method" in both theoretical and practical aspects. His theory of poetics is rooted in the ways of thinking and cultivating of the Yunmen sect. He incorporated his dual identity as a senior monk of the Yunmen School and a poet. He inherited Guanxiu's view of poetry and the Chan concept of Shitou Xiqian and Zhimen Guangzuo, which greatly impacted the literati of the Northern Song Dynasty and provided a conceptual basis for maturing and improving the "flexible method" theory. This text, the initial purpose of which was to review Dubravka Ugrešić's latest book in English translation, the collection of essays The Age of Skin (2020), unexpectedly transformed into a synthetic writing on the literary and cultural relevance of this great feminist post-Yugoslav author, who passed away suddenly on 17 March 2023. The article analyses the main theses of the book and contextualizes them within Dubravka Ugrešić's overall text corpus, emphasizing the importance of her essayistic authorial voice—a voice that articulates critical topics of our time, from poverty, exploitation, and violence, to migrations, everyday life mythologies, and popular culture, to melancholic recollections of a better past, together with a utopian future and the possibility of resistance, enabled also by the power and beauty of literature. This article argues that Bush's Columbia address lacked the necessary rhetorical touchstones established by Reagan's Challenger address, the exemplar for presidential eulogistic rhetoric following a tragedy in space flight. First, a central theme found in presidential rhetoric concerning space exploration, that of characterizing astronauts as pioneers and space as the new frontier, will be traced. Next, Reagan's eulogy to the Challenger crew, noting the speech's points of rhetorical excellence, several of which previous scholars have articulated (Goldzwig & Dionisopoulos, 1986; Jamieson, 1988; Mister, 1986), will be outlined. The goal is to establish rhetorical touchstones by which to judge the Bush address. Then the literature on eulogies generally to complete the survey of what a successful eulogy should be and do will be reviewed. Working at the intersection of death studies and media studies, this article examines what we can learn from the death of media technologies designed for the deceased, what we refer to as necro-technologies. Media deaths illuminate a tension between the promise of persistence and realities of precariousness embodied in all media. This tension is, however, more visibly strained by the mortality of technologies designed to mediate and memorialise the human dead by making explicit the limitations of digital eternity implied by products in the funeral industry. In this article, we historicise and define necro-technologies within broader discussions of media obsolescence and death. Drawing from our funeral industry fieldwork, we then provide four examples of recently deceased necro-technologies that are presented in the form of eulogies. These eulogies offer a stylised but culturally significant format of remembrance to create an historical record of the deceased and their life. These necro-technologies are the funeral attendance robot CARL, the in-coffin sound system CataCombo, the posthumous messaging service DeadSocial and the digital avatar service Virtual Eternity. We consider what is at stake when technologies designed to enliven the human deceased – often in perpetuity – are themselves subject to mortality. We suggest a number of entangled economic, cultural and technical reasons for the failure of necro-technologies within the specific contexts of the death care industry, which may also help to highlight broader forces of mortality affecting all media technologies. These are described as misplaced commercial imaginaries, cultural reticence and material impermanence. In thinking about the deaths of necro-technologies, and their causes, we propose a new form of death, a 'material death' that extends beyond biological, social and memorial forms of human death already established to account for the finitude of media materiality and memory. This paper uses disruption to norms of funeral attendance experienced in the UK during the COVID−19 pandemic as a lens to illuminate why and how funeral attendance can matter. It draws on an extensive qualitative dataset, gathered through semi-structured interviews with a diverse sample of 68 individuals who were bereaved and/or worked or volunteered in death care during the COVID−19 pandemic. It first examines interviewees’ concerns about the insufficiency of funerals when gatherings were restricted. Second, it depicts the range of additional and alternative ways people found to pay tribute to the deceased and to offer and seek support when conventional funeral attendance was limited. Third, it explains why, for some, the smaller funerals necessitated by pandemic restrictions were welcome experiences. These findings support a development of Bailey and Walter’s influential theorising concerning ‘configurational eulogies’: while a ‘well-attended’ funeral still matters to many, mourners contribute to configurational eulogies through a diverse and evolving range of activities. The shifts in funeral gatherings and activities prompted by the COVID−19 pandemic can be understood as part of dynamic processes of reconfiguring eulogistic repertoires in changing social contexts. In this study, we examine the book written by Reyhan Keleş, which is about the mi'raj (works dealing with the ascension of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to the heavens). Mi'rajiyyas are among the religious genres within the scope of Turkish Islamic literature. Although Turkish Islamic literature is a vast field of study, the author restricts her study to diwan poetry (Ottoman Poetry) and eulogy poetry. The subject of mi'raj (ascension) has been written in several types of poetry and even prose works, and the author's focus and investigation on it both as a religious-literary genre and eulogy poetry enables a thorough investigation of the entire topic. Just as people have personal characteristics, societies also have their own value judgments and beliefs called culture. Culture carries the burden of the past and is pregnant with future generations. The most powerful tool used by Arabs to transfer their own culture from one generation to another is their poetry. Arabs from the pre-Islamic period to today; The heroism they showed in wars, the people they deem worthy of praise, the moral values they took care to protect, the laments for the deceased, the most beautiful words that can be said for a lover, etc. many cultural accumulations have been transferred to today through poetry. In this respect, poetry has become the Diwan of the Arabs in terms of being a treasure or archive of cultural accumulation. Wise words are one of the values they want to preserve by transferring them from generation to generation with a record of poetry. It is an artistic tradition in Arabic poetry to express observations and life experiences in a single couplet, often with convincing similes. Even if the theme of the eulogy, called grudge, is an elegy, eulogy or even a ghazal, it has been accepted as an aesthetic standard to sprinkle wise words from time to time or to give the poem to the poem with a wise life experience. In this study, the poems of Abū Firās (d. 357/968) one of the poets of the Abbasid period, with this wisdom were examined in terms of content and literary arts. Makin on indirect government funding programs as well as what such developments could portend for direct funding programs. In the paper, I collected the basic information about principia on Lombard' s Sentences from the University of Cracow in the fifteenth century scattered in the different locations. Delivering the principium was an academic ceremony which gathered the university community around the bachelor. The student was obliged to present the speech, which started with the invocation of God' s grace, continued with the protestatio, eulogy based on the biblical verse, solution of the theological question and was crowned by the thanksgiving. We are currently aware of seventeen excerpts from Cracow scholars: some of them have already been thoroughly studied, but the majority are still waiting in the manuscripts for the critical edition. This paper collected the most important information about the preserved texts, their location in the manuscripts and the state of editions. In this way, the paper gives the tools to continue and to deepen future investigations on the principia in fifteenth-century Cracow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The theme of eulogy which cannot be used as the main theme at the beginning of the Age of Jahiliyyah was scrutinized much more within the poems written about other themes. From the middle of this period, al-Nābigha ad-Dhubyānī began to earn money by writing poems in the genre of eulogy. This situation attracted the other poets of the period and they started to write eulogies in the form of qasida. It is seen that the qasida with the theme of the eulogy was partly interrupted in the Golden Age of Islam because in this period, the Muslims were in constant wars and struggle owing to the spread of Islam in new places. In this period, some changes occurred in the motifs used in the eulogy. The expansion of Muslim lands and the political developments experienced during the Umayyad Period had a direct impact on the eulogy. The poems with the theme of eulogy in the abovementioned period focused on the elements such as boasting about race and tribe as in the Age of Ignorance. In this period, Umayyad, Shi’a, Hāricī and Zubeyrī factions appeared. The poets turned the poems with the theme of eulogy into a political propaganda tool by supporting the faction they feel close to these political movements. Due to the reputation of the poets by society, many statesmen praised by the poets took these poets with them and bestowed on the poets much. In the Abbasid period, the Islamic State made great progress in different such as scientific, social, cultural, and political aspects. This progress naturally allowed the eulogy to develop in different topics. Even in the Abbasid Period, eulogies continued to be used as a political weapon by the people in power to be accepted by society. Additionally, the eulogies of this period also appear as historical records in terms of describing the victories and internal turmoil. Eulogy poets of the Abbasid Period took the habit of making money with poetry inherited from the eulogy poets of the Umayyad Period a step further. Apart from the eulogies that were special to the upper class, respected as official poetry, and far from reflecting reality and social feelings in the abovementioned period, there were also eulogies reflecting the general feelings associated with the whole society among the people. The first eulogy poems written in Andalusia under Arab rule were penned in the general framework of Eastern Arabic poetry. Even if the eulogy poems written in Andalusia seem to be a replica and a sequel of Eastern Arabic poetry in terms of style and subject, after they conquered Andalusia, the Arabs encountered climatic conditions and natural beauties that they were not accustomed to before. These natural beauties of Andalusia further developed the competence of the Arabs in poetry and prompted them to use short and light couplets in their poems. The political conflicts experienced in the Islamic State of Andalusia, just as in the Eastern Islamic States, had a direct impact on the eulogy. Andalusian eulogy poets maintained to see the eulogy poems as a source of income for themselves like the Eastern poets who are their predecessors and contemporaries. The absence of a study covering all periods of the eulogy that has an important place in classical Arabic poetry paved the way for this article. This study aims to show the differences among the periods by analysing the birth of eulogy and its development in classic Arab literature. Despite the literary tradition that developed with Western influences in the 19th century, the "Divan poetry" or "culture" has prevailed. İbrahim Necati was one of the poets who combined West-influenced Turkish poetry and classical Turkish poetry in this century. The poet, who was not quoted in the literature and has been confused with his contemporary dervish poet İbrahim Necati, authored two surviving works: Mahsul-i Şebabım and Gencine-i Belagat. The 42-page Mahsul-i Şebabım, published by Alem Printing House in Istanbul in 1887, begins with an appreciation written by İsmail Safa (d. 1901). The work includes 19 ghazals, 4 stanzas, 3 poems written in the new form under the "Nazira" section, 1 eulogy to the Prophet, and 7 poems, and 1 masnavi, and 14 couplets in the "Muhtelifü'l-Me'al-i Eş'arıma Bir Nazar" section. It also includes prose sections: "To A Bunch of Flowers" and "Cümel". The present paper aims to publish the Mahsûl-i Şebâbım with Latin letters, inform the readers about İbrahim Necati, one of the unknown poets of the 19th century, and his literary personality. Abdurrahman B. Ahmed B. Ali al-Humaydi is one of the important Egyptian poets of the Ottoman period. al-Humaydi, also known as Elh-i Varrak, wrote many poems, especially prophetic eulogies. He collected his poems in an alphabetical system in his divan. In this article, the first 40 couplets of Abdurrahman B. Ahmed B. Ali al-Humaydi, which he discussed in his work Menhu's-semi' bi serhi temlihi'l bedî' bi medhi's-sefî, which are in manuscript form in various libraries, and they are included in these couplets. While doing this, the arts will be listed on the basis of the author's system. Al-humaydi handled the literal and spiritual bedi' arts in a mixed order. The author has included 13 types of puns under the title of pun. In addition, in some couplets, he exemplified several bedî' types together. With this study, it is aimed to bring to light the couplets that are the best expression of the love of the Prophet in this work, which remained on the dusty shelves of the libraries, and to introduce the literary arts in these couplets. In addition, it is aimed to contribute to the science of bedî with this research, which is one of the most beautiful examples of the bedî'iyye type, in which at least one bedî' art is included in each couplet.
