The catalytic conversion of CO 2 to CH 4 (Sabatier reaction) has been studied to develop an after-treatment process at vehicles exhausts. Three different formulations of Ru commercial catalysts, two in powder and one in pellets shape, were tested and characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX), N 2 adsorption at −196 °C and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). Experimental results show a high CO 2 conversion (X CO2 = 0.96 @ T = 280 °C) for one powder catalyst formulation whereas the other one has maximum CO 2 conversion = 0.69. In both cases a high CH 4 selectivity is measured. High CO 2 conversion (X CO2 = 0.92 @ T = 300 °C) is obtained also with pellet catalysts but only at lower GHSV values. The different behavior of the catalysts was ascribed to the different physicochemical properties and the key parameters for the application development of the process were identified. In particular, the possibility to use pellets or monolithic reactors, thus minimizing the pressure drops in the reactor, makes possible a commercial application in the treatment of vehicles exhausts. • Ru catalysts guarantee high CO 2 conversion to CH 4 even in pellet shape. • Ru content can be limited to 1.5 wt% for a thickness of 0.5 mm on catalyst surface. • Catalyst performances make it possible the application of monolithic reactors. Among wild species used in potato breeding, Solanum commersonii displays the highest tolerance to low temperatures under both acclimated (ACC) and non‐acclimated (NACC) conditions. It is also the first wild potato relative with a known whole genome sequence. Recent studies have shown that abiotic stresses induce changes in the expression of many small non‐coding RNA (sncRNA).We determined the small non‐coding RNA (sncRNAome) of two clones of S. commersonii contrasting in their cold response phenotypes via smRNAseq.Differential analysis provided evidence that expression of several miRNAs changed in response to cold stress conditions. Conserved miR408a and miR408b changed their expression under NACC conditions, whereas miR156 and miR169 were differentially expressed only under ACC conditions. We also report changes in tasiRNA and secondary siRNA expression under both stress conditions.Our results reveal possible roles of sncRNA in the regulatory networks associated with tolerance to low temperatures and provide useful information for a more strategic use of genomic resources in potato breeding. Background: Little is known about the influence of multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis on parenthood attitude in people with MS (pwMS).Objective: To investigate the impact of diagnosis, clinical features and external disease-related influences on parenthood decision-making in Italian pwMS.Methods: A web-based survey was posted on SMsocialnetwork.com to investigate clinical status, parenthood desire, influences on family planning, pregnancy outcomes, abortions and adoptions of pwMS.Results: 33/395 respondents never wanted to become parent because of MS ("anti-parenthood after diagnosis"). 362 declared to be in favor of parenthood. 51% pwMS having a child by the survey time had already received the MS diagnosis at first childbirth. The frequency of a second child in pwMS after diagnosis was 38% compared to 67% in people without yet MS diagnosis. 16% of pwMS were discouraged to become parent after diagnosis, mainly by medical personnel. In 71% of respondents, diagnosis did not delay the decision to become parent and only 39% were counseled by treating physician to plan pregnancy. Patients' distribution according to the clinical phenotype (exclusively relapsing vs exclusively progressive) showed a higher proportion of progressive patients in the "anti-parenthood after diagnosis" subgroup.Conclusion: MS diagnosis impacted dramatically on the life project of 7% of pwMS that decided not to have children because of the disease and in pro-parenthood pwMS impacted especially on having the second child. Several telescopes include large deformable mirrors (DM) located directly inside the telescope. These adaptive telescopes trigger new constraints for the calibration of the adaptive optics (AO) systems as they usually offer no access to an artificial calibration source for the interaction matrix measurement. Moreover, the optical propagation between the DM and the wavefront sensor (WFS) may evolve during the operation, resulting in misregistrations that highly affect the AO performance and thus the scientific observation. They have to be measured and compensated, for instance by updating the calibration. A new strategy consists of estimating the misregistrations and injecting them into synthetic models to generate noise-free interaction matrices. This pseudo-synthetic approach is the baseline for the adaptive optics facility working with a Shack–Hartmann WFS and seems particularly suited for the future Extremely Large Telescope as the calibration will have to be regularly updated, for a large numbers of actuators. In this paper, the feasibility of a pseudo-synthetic calibration with pyramid WFS at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) is investigated. A synthetic model of the LBT AO systems is developed, and the procedure to adjust the misregistrations parameters is introduced, extracting them from an experimental interaction matrix. We successfully tested an interaction matrix generated from the model on the real system in high-order AO mode. We recorded a slightly better performance with respect to the experimental one. Knowledge of whether and how respiratory microbiota composition can prime the immune system and provide colonisation resistance, limiting consecutive pathobiont overgrowth and infections, is essential to improving the prevention and therapy of respiratory disorders. Modulation of dysbiotic ecosystems or reconstitution of missing microbes might be a possible measure to reduce respiratory diseases. The aim of this review is to analyse the role of nasopharyngeal microbiota in the development of respiratory tract disease in paediatric-age subjects. PubMed was used to search for all studies published over the last 15 years using the following key words: 'microbiota' or 'microbioma' and 'nasopharyngeal' or 'respiratory' or 'nasal' and 'children' or 'paediatric' or 'infant'. Analysis of the literature showed that respiratory microbiota can regulate health and disease development in the respiratory tract. Like the gut microbiota, the respiratory microbiota is established at birth, and early respiratory microbiota composition determines bacterial succession patterns and respiratory health in children. Protective and dangerous bacteria have been identified, and this can be considered the base for developing new approaches to diseases that respond poorly to traditional interventions. Reconstitution of missing microbes can be achieved by the administration of pre- and probiotics. Modulation of respiratory microbiota by favouring colonisation of the upper respiratory tract by beneficial commensals can interfere with the proliferation and activity of resident pathobionts and is a possible new measure to reduce the risk of disease. We show numerical simulations with monochromatic light in the visible for the LBTI Fizeau imager, including opto-dynamical aberrations due here to adaptive optics (AO) errors and to differential piston fluctuations, while other errors have been neglected. The achievable Strehl by the LBTI using two AO is close to the Strehl provided by a single standalone AO system, as long as other differential wavefront errors are mitigated. The LBTI Fizeau imager is primarily limited by the AO performance and by the differential piston/tip-tilt errors. Snapshots retain high-angular resolution and high-contrast imaging information by freezing the fringes against piston errors. Several merit functions have been critically evaluated in order to characterize point spread functions and the modulation transfer functions for highcontrast imaging applications. The LBTI Fizeau mode can provide an image quality suitable for standard science cases (i.e. a Strehl above 70 per cent) by performing both at a time: an AO correction better than ≈λ/18 RMS for both short and long exposures, and a piston correction better than ≈λ/8 RMS for long exposures or simply below the coherence length for short exposures. Such results, which can be applied to any observing wavelength, suggest that AO and piston control at the LBTI would already improve the contrast at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths. Therefore, the LBTI Fizeau imager can be used for high-contrast imaging, providing a high-Strehl regime (by both AO systems), a cophasing mode (by a fringe tracker) and a burst mode (by a fast camera) to record fringed speckles in short exposures. We show by numerical simulations a fundamental gain in contrast when combining coherently monochromatic light from two adaptive optics (AO) telescopes instead of using a single stand-alone AO telescope, assuming efficient control and acquisition systems at high speed. A contrast gain map is defined as the normalized point spread functions (PSFs) ratio of a single Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) aperture over the dual Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer (LBTI) aperture in Fizeau mode. The global gain averaged across the AO-corrected field of view is improved by a factor of 2 in contrast in long exposures and by a factor of 10 in contrast in short exposures (i.e. in exposures, respectively, longer or shorter than the coherence time). The fringed speckle halo in short exposures contains not only highangular resolution information, as stated by speckle imaging and speckle interferometry, but also high-contrast imaging information. A high-gain zone is further produced in the valleys of the PSF formed by the dark Airy rings and/or the dark fringes. Earth rotation allows us to exploit various areas in the contrast gain map. A huge-contrast gain in narrow zones can be achieved when both a dark fringe and a dark ring overlap on to an exoplanet. Compared to a single 8-m LBT aperture, the 23-m LBTI Fizeau imager can provide a gain in sensitivity (by a factor of 4), a gain in angular resolution (by a factor of 3) and, as well, a gain in raw contrast (by a factor of 2-1000 varying over the AO-corrected field of view). We study the unconventional transmission properties of a wave packet through a PT-symmetric potential region as describing the actual electromagnetic wave propagation along a waveguide filled with gain and loss media. The nontrivial behavior of the transmission probability manifests in the giant amplification of the incident electromagnetic signal of given wavelengths for well-defined configurations, depending on the gain/loss contrast. Maximum transmission peaks are related to spectral singularities and a strict correlation exists between the 'resonant' wavelengths and the gain/loss contrast. The transit times are as well calculated, showing their surprising vanishing in the opaque barrier limit, independently of the gain/loss contrast, which is reminiscent of some sort of Hartman effect. Also, nonlocal effects manifest in the presence of negative delay times for given configurations, while a correlation is apparent between maximum delay times and transmission probability peaks, though appreciably depending on the gain/loss contrast. Context. The diffusion of adaptive optics systems in astronomical instrumentation for large ground-based telescopes is rapidly increasing and the pyramid wavefront sensor is replacing the Shack–Hartmann as the standard solution for single conjugate adaptive optics systems. The pyramid wavefront sensor is typically used with a tip-tilt modulation to increase the linearity range of the sensor, but the non-modulated case is interesting because it maximizes the sensor sensitivity. The latter case is generally avoided for the reduced linearity range that prevents robust operation in the presence of atmospheric turbulence. Aims. We aim to solve part of the issues of the non-modulated pyramid wavefront sensor by reducing the model error in the interaction matrix. We linearize the sensor response in the working conditions without extending the sensor linearity range. Methods. We developed a new calibration approach to model the response of pyramid wave front sensor in partial correction, whereby the working conditions in the presence of residual turbulence are considered. Results. We use in simulations to show how the new calibration approach allows for the pyramid wave front sensor without modulation to be used to sense and correct atmospheric turbulence and we discuss when this case is preferable over the modulated case. The effect of both pH and surface oxidation of nanoparticles is studied on the interaction between a commercial slurry of Nanoscale Zerovalent Iron (NZVI) and the azo dye Acid Orange 7 (AO7). NZVI is a reducing agent used for the degradation of several pollutants, including azo dyes: during pollutant degradation, it undergoes progressive oxidation and dissolution. Though it is generally acknowledged that NZVI consists of core-shell nanoparticles, where the core of metallic iron is covered by FexOy shell, it still remains a poorly defined system. In this work, the solid fraction recovered by filtration and drying was characterized by means of XRD diffraction with Rietveld refinement, N2 isotherms at 77 K, FE-SEM and TEM observation, EDX analysis, and IR spectroscopy. Powders were obtained from both the parent slurry and the same slurry pretreated with HCl in order to remove FexOy shell, finally reactivating the nanoparticles. The aforementioned physicochemical characterization allowed figuring out some correlations between the properties of the studied nanomaterial and the processes occurring when it is in contact with AO7 in aqueous phase. The type of interaction occurring within the NZVI/AO7 system (adsorption and type of redox reactions) strongly depends not only on the pH of the starting solution, but also on the surface oxidation of the nanoparticles. To review the topics of interest related to the use of dalbavancin in paediatric patients. PubMed was used to search for all of the studies published over the last 15 years using the key word 'dalbavancin'. A total of 36 manuscripts were selected, and due to the limited pediatric experience a further research was performed in order to identify clinical trials ongoing. Three studies that concerned children were found in clinicaltrials.gov. This review considers also the manuscripts published on the adult population in order to highlight the gaps requiring further research at pediatric age. Dalbavancin has emerged as a promising agent against resistant Gram-positive invasive infections. It is approved in the United States and Europe for the treatment of adult patients with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (SSTIs). Compared to other available antibiotics that are active against multi-resistant bacteria, the advantages of dalbavancin include a lower potential for drug interactions and the possibility of fewer required doses due to a longer half-life. Pharmacokinetic characteristics of dalbavacin are attractive for its clinical impact, especially for children who may avoid prolonged hospitalization and central venous access. However, further studies are needed to establish its appropriate paediatric dosage before it can be licensed for use in newborns and children. For younger patients, at a time when infections due to multidrug-resistant Gram-positive pathogens are increasing, dosage, efficacy and safety data for dalbavancin are needed to ensure the highest antimicrobial efficacy while also minimizing the risk of adverse events. Morphological, textural and surface properties are reported of Fe-doped aluminosilicate nanotubes (NTs) of the imogolite type (IMO, (OH) 3 Al 2 O 3 SiOH). Two samples with 1.4 wt% Fe were obtained by either direct synthesis (Fe-1.4-IMO) or post synthesis loading (Fe-L-IMO). Since formation of Fe 2 O 3 clusters was observed in both cases, a third sample with a lower Fe content corresponding to 0.70 wt% Fe was prepared by direct synthesis, with the aim of preventing clusters formation (Fe-0.70-IMO). The samples were characterized by: High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM); X-ray Diffraction (XRD); N 2 sorption isotherms; Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA); Diffuse Reflectance (DR) UV–vis and IR spectroscopies; electrophoretic mobility in water (ζ-potential) and adsorption of the azo-dye Acid Orange 7 (NaAO7) from water solutions. With Fe-0.70-IMO, Al 3+ isomorphic substitution by Fe 3+ was the main process occurring, leading to a material with formula (OH) 3 Al 1.975 Fe 0.025 O 3 SiOH, in which formation of Fe(OH)Al groups occurred at NTs outer surface. With Fe-1.4-IMO, some of the formed Fe(OH)Al groups probably acted as nucleation seeds, due to the natural tendency of iron to form Fe–O–Fe bridges, being responsible of the (undesired) formation of some Fe 2 O 3 clusters. Comparison with Fe-L-IMO, in which only the formation of Fe 2 O 3 clusters was, in principle, expected, showed on the contrary that some isomorphic substitution occurred also by post-synthesis loading. The intrinsic acidity of Fe(OH)Al groups was marginally different from that of Al(OH)Al groups, as shown by both IR spectroscopy and ζ-potential measurements, but the presence of iron modified the adsorption properties of IMO. Interaction with AO7 − anions in water, indeed, occurred in different ways: i) with proper IMO, besides electrostatic interaction with the positively charged external surface of nanotubes, AO7 − anions preferentially adsorb via H-bonding on inner SiOH groups; ii) with both Fe-0.70-IMO and Fe-1.4-IMO, Fe 3+ cations of Fe(OH)Al groups act as coordination centres for N atoms in the AO7 − moiety; iii) with Fe-L-IMO, larger Fe 2 O 3 clusters likely hinder AO7 − adsorption. The acronym PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections) has been used to describe a syndrome characterized by various obsessions, compulsions, tics, hyperactivity, motor stereotypies, and paroxysmal movement disorders that are correlated with prior infection by group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus pyogenes (GABHS) infections. Five clinical criteria can be used to diagnose PANDAS: (1) the presence of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and/or any other tic disorders; (2) prepuberal onset (between 3 years of age and the start of puberty); (3) abrupt onset and relapsing-remitting symptom course; (4) a distinct association with GABHS infection; and (5) association with neurological abnormalities during exacerbations (adventitious movements or motoric hyperactivity). The exact pathogenesis of PANDAS remains unclear, and several theories that focus on multiple etiologic or contributive factors have emerged. PANDAS appears to be a neurobiological disorder that potentially complicates GABHS infections in genetically susceptible individuals. The current standard of care for PANDAS patients remains symptomatic, and cognitive behavioral therapy, such as exposure and response prevention, combined with family counseling and psychoeducation, should be the first approach for treating PANDAS. This review examines current theories of PANDAS pathogenesis, identifies possible treatments for managing this complex condition, and highlights areas for future research. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that presents a protean spectrum of clinical manifestations, and may affect any organ. The typical course of SLE is insidious, slow, and progressive, with potential exacerbations and remissions, and even dramatically acute and rapidly fatal outcomes. Recently, infections have been shown to be highly associated with the onset and/or exacerbations of SLE, and their possible causative and/or protective role has been largely emphasized in the medical literature. However, the etiopathogenesis of SLE is still obscure and far from being completely elucidated. Among infections, particularly Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), parvovirus B19, retrovirus, and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections might play a pivotal pathogenetic role. The multifaceted interactions between infections and autoimmunity reveal many possibilities for either causative or protective associations. Indeed, some infections, primarily protozoan infections, might confer protection from autoimmune processes, depending on the unique interaction between the microorganism and host. Further studies are needed in order to demonstrate that infectious agents might, indeed, be causative of SLE, and to address the potential clinical sequelae of infections in the field of autoimmunity. Despite the potential for protection against a broad spectrum of pathogens, the availability of an increased number of effective vaccines could lead to a significant reduction in vaccination coverage as the result of issues with implementation of new vaccines within existing protocols. To overcome these problems, the development of combined vaccines has been promoted. The use of combined vaccines offers a number of potential benefits, including a reduction in the number of patient visits, reduced complications associated with multiple intramuscular injections, decreased costs of stocking and administering separate vaccines, and a lowering of the risk of delayed or missed vaccinations. The hexavalent vaccine includes antigens against diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis ( DTaP), hepatitis B ( HBsAg), poliomyelitis (P1, P2, P3) and Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) infections. The primary goal of this review is to discuss the immunogenicity, efficacy, safety and tolerability of several hexavalent preparations that are either commercially available or still under development. The benefits of vaccination are clearly demonstrated by the eradication or enormous decline in the incidence of many vaccine-preventable diseases, but the coverage of many highly recommended vaccines is still frequently inadequate and children continue to suffer from diseases that could have been prevented. The main aim of this paper is to discuss the recognized barriers to the vaccination of children and adolescents confronting national health systems, providers and parents, and the ways in which they can be overcome. Most of the problems underlying limited vaccination coverage among children are due to a lack of understanding on the part of healthcare providers and parents, which underlines the need for educational programmes specifically addressed to each of these groups. It is also essential that all of the physicians providing immunization develop approaches that acknowledge parents' concerns and respectfully try to correct any misinformation. Other means of extending vaccine coverage include the implementation of adequate systems for recording vaccine administration and the activation of effective reminder/recall systems, the provision of immunization services in some medical care specialties or by integrating healthcare sites, and the elimination or reduction of all the problems that currently limit access to vaccination services. Noroviruses (NoVs) are among the most frequent causes of acute pediatric gastroenteritis. Although the disease is often self-limiting and recovery is the rule, it constitutes an important health problem because of its highly contagious nature and the high rate of morbidity. NoVs are responsible for 47-96 % of outbreaks of acute pediatric gastroenteritis, and 5-36 % of sporadic cases. NoV-induced gastroenteritis is a frequent cause of hospitalization, and severe and sometimes fatal cases have been reported in immunocompromised children. The increasing recognition of NoVs as the cause of pediatric disease and the limited success in preventing outbreaks have led to consideration of vaccines. However, while awaiting the development of a vaccine, there is an urgent need for more epidemiological data concerning childhood NoV infection, including the impact of NoVs on different age groups, the possible etiological role of NoVs in infections other than gastroenteritis, and the socioeconomic impact of NoVs on households. There are few and partially discordant data regarding nasopharyngeal rhinovirus (RV) load and viremia, and none of the published studies evaluated the two variables together. The aim of this study was to provide new information concerning the clinical relevance of determining nasopharyngeal viral load and viremia when characterising RV infection. Nasopharyngeal swabs were obtained from 251 children upon their admission to hospital because of fever and signs and symptoms of acute respiratory infection in order to identify the virus and determine its nasopharyngeal load, and a venous blood sample was taken in order to evaluate viremia. Fifty children (19.9 %) had RV-positive nasopharyngeal swabs, six (12 %) of whom also had RV viremia: RV-C in four cases (66.6 %), and RV-A and RV-B in one case each. The RV nasopharyngeal load was significantly higher in the children with RV viremia ( p < 0.001), who also had a higher respiratory rate ( p = 0.02), white blood cell counts ( p = 0.008) and C-reactive protein levels ( p = 0.006), lower blood O saturation levels ( P = 0.005), and more often required O therapy ( p = 0.009). The presence of RV viremia is associated with a significantly higher nasopharyngeal viral load and more severe disease, which suggests that a high nasopharyngeal viral load is a prerequisite for viremia, and that viremia is associated with considerable clinical involvement. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of posterior pharyngeal and nasopharyngeal swabs in identifying and quantifying meningococcal carriage. Two swab samples were obtained from 564 healthy adolescents aged 15-19 years, the first taken from the posterior pharyngeal wall through the mouth and the second through the nose. Bacterial genomic DNA was extracted and screened for Neisseria meningitidis by means of two separate singleplex real-time polymerase chain reactions (real-time PCRs) in order to identify the CtrA and sodC genes. Subsequently, N. meningitidis-positive samples underwent a further singleplex real-time PCR in order to determine the N. meningitidis serogroup, and the DNA was quantified by means of standard curves. Thirty-seven subjects (6.6 %) were found to be carriers of N. meningitidis. The most frequently carried serogroup was serogroup B (15 cases, 40.5 %); serogroups A, Y, X, W135 and Z were found in, respectively, two (5.4 %), five (13.5 %), four (10.8 %), three (8.1 %) and one subject (2.7 %); the serogroup was not identified in seven cases. The detection of carrier status was significantly more frequent using posterior pharyngeal swabs (5.3 % vs. 2.1 %; p = 0.004), which also contained a significantly larger number of N. meningitidis genomic copies (4.91 ± 1.39 vs. 2.50 ± 0.8 log genomic copies/mL; p < 0.001). Posterior pharyngeal swabs seem to be better than nasopharyngeal swabs for detecting N. meningitidis carriage in large-scale epidemiological studies because they identify a significantly larger number of pathogen carriers and recover a significantly larger amount of bacterial DNA. Mismanaged protein trafficking by the proteostasis network contributes to several conformational diseases, including cystic fibrosis, the most frequent lethal inherited disease in Caucasians. Proteostasis regulators, as cystamine, enable the beneficial action of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) potentiators in ΔF508-CFTR airways beyond drug washout. Here we tested the hypothesis that functional CFTR protein can sustain its own plasma membrane (PM) stability. Depletion or inhibition of wild-type CFTR present in bronchial epithelial cells reduced the availability of the small GTPase Rab5 by causing Rab5 sequestration within the detergent-insoluble protein fraction together with its accumulation in aggresomes. CFTR depletion decreased the recruitment of the Rab5 effector early endosome antigen 1 to endosomes, thus reducing the local generation of phosphatidylinositol-3-phosphate. This diverts recycling of surface proteins, including transferrin receptor and CFTR itself. Inhibiting CFTR function also resulted in its ubiquitination and interaction with SQSTM1/p62 at the PM, favoring its disposal. Addition of cystamine prevented the recycling defect of CFTR by enhancing BECN1 expression and reducing SQSTM1 accumulation. Our results unravel an unexpected link between CFTR protein and function, the latter regulating the levels of CFTR surface expression in a positive feed-forward loop, and highlight CFTR as a pivot of proteostasis in bronchial epithelial cells. Millions of people throughout the world are bitten by animals each year. About 90 % of the bites are caused by dogs and cats, and infections are the most common complications. As children are the most frequently bitten subjects, pediatricians should provide parents with everything they need to know in order to confront the problem. However, this does not seem to be case and, as the treatment of bite wounds is frequently inappropriate and delayed, the risk of acute infection and sequelae is increased. The main aim of this review is to discuss the epidemiology, microbiology, and clinical characteristics of infections due to dog and cat bites in children, and suggest the best approach to their management. Analysis of the published literature shows that prompt treatment is necessary in order to reduce the risk of infection. The therapeutic measures include wound washing, specific prophylaxis (i.e., tetanus and/or rabies), and antibiotics in the case of immunocompromised patients or deep wounds (particularly if there is evidence of edema or crushing), facial bites, or any wound over a tendon or bone. This study was conducted to evaluate the association between pneumococcal DNA load and parapneumonic pleural effusion (PPE) in children with community-acquired pneumonia. Bacterial load was quantified and related to the presence of PPE with or without empyema in 72 otherwise healthy children aged ≤5 years who were hospitalised because of radiographically confirmed CAP and showed a real-time polymerase chain reaction that was positive for Streptococcus pneumoniae. The proportion of children with a high bacterial load (i.e. ≥265 DNA copies/mL) was larger among the subjects with PPE than those without it. Multivariate analysis showed that a high bacterial load was significantly associated with PPE (OR 8.65; 95 % CI 1.10-67.8 vs a bacterial load of <125 copies/mL). Children with infection due to pneumococcal serotype 19A were at highest risk of developing PPE (OR 7.44; 95 % CI 1.10-50.4 vs all other typeable serotypes). The patients with CAP due to pneumococcal serotypes that are not included in the 13-valent conjugate vaccine (PCV13) were more frequently affected by PPE than those with infections associated with serotypes included in the vaccine, except for serotype 19A. Bacterial loads of ≥265 DNA copies/mL are significantly associated with PPE, and serotype 19A is significantly associated with a high bacterial load and the development of PPE. The mean bacterial load of the patients with empyema was higher than that of patients with simple PPE. Steroids have long been used to improve a number of clinical conditions because of their role in reducing inflammatory responses, but their use has always been limited because of their possible long-term side effects. The aim of this review is to establish whether steroids can have a positive effect on the outcome of some pediatric upper respiratory tract infections. We used PubMed to select all of the studies on topical or systemic steroids, and their therapeutic use in children with rhinosinusitis (RS), acute otitis media (AOM), otitis media with effusion (OME), acute pharyngitis (AP), or periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis and cervical adenitis (PFAPA), published over the last 15 years. Although a generally significant improvement in signs and symptoms has been observed with the use of intranasal steroids in children with RS, it is not clear which molecule should be recommended, how long treatment should be continued, or whether the benefits are limited to allergic children. No high-quality studies on the use of topical or systemic steroids in AOM have been carried out, and the results of studies of OME are controversial. The potential positive effects of steroids in children with AP are too slight to justify their use, and their possible adverse effects (particularly in the case of repeated administration) have not been clearly evaluated. Oral corticosteroids seem to be effective in resolving the symptoms of PFAPA, although they do not prevent future fever cycles. These findings show that further randomised and controlled studies are required in order to approach upper respiratory tract infections correctly and avoid the risks associated with frequent steroid use. The purpose of this investigation was to determine how specialists in paediatric infectious diseases (PIDs) manage children with suspected Lyme disease (LD) by comparing their approaches in Italian endemic and non-endemic areas. A cross-sectional survey of the PID specialists participating in the Italian Society for Pediatric Infectious Disease (SITIP) Registry of LD was carried out between 1 January and 30 April 2012. A total of 160 children (80 living in endemic areas and 80 living in non-endemic areas) were diagnosed as having LD between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2011. The clinical manifestations were erythema migrans in 130 cases (81.3 %), arthritis in 24 (15.0 %) and neuroborreliosis in six (3.8 %). Significant differences from the recommendations concerning serology and the tests to undertake were mainly observed in the children with erythema migrans, especially those living in non-endemic areas ( p < 0.05). The children with erythema migrans who lived in non-endemic areas were treated with antibiotics significantly less frequently than those living in endemic areas ( p < 0.05), and significantly fewer children with erythema migrans or arthritis living in non-endemic areas were treated with amoxicillin in comparison with those living in endemic regions ( p < 0.05). The duration of antimicrobial therapy was significantly shorter than recommended in the children with erythema migrans or arthritis, especially those living in non-endemic areas ( p < 0.05). Paediatric LD is also present in areas of Italy in which it is not considered endemic, but knowledge concerning its management is generally poor among PID specialists and characterised by enormous gaps in non-endemic areas. We have performed H and KS band observations of the planetary system around HR8799 using the new AO system at the Large Binocular Telescope and the PISCES Camera. The excellent instrument performance (Strehl ratios up to 80% in H band) enabled the detection of the innermost planet, HR 8799e, at H band for the first time. The H and KS magnitudes of HR8799e are similar to those of planets c and d, with planet e being slightly brighter. Therefore, HR8799e is likely slightly more massive than c and d. We also explored possible orbital configurations and their orbital stability. We confirm that the orbits of planets b, c and e are consistent with being circular and coplanar; planet d should have either an orbital eccentricity of about 0.1 or be non-coplanar with respect to b and c. Planet e can not be in circular and coplanar orbit in a 4:2:1 mean motion resonances with c and d, while coplanar and circular orbits are allowed for a 5:2 resonance. The analysis of dynamical stability shows that the system is highly unstable or chaotic when planetary masses of about 5 MJ for b and 7 MJ for the other planets are adopted. Significant regions of dynamical stability for timescales of tens of Myr are found when adopting planetary masses of about 3.5, 5, 5, and 5 MJ for HR8799b, c, d, and e respectively. The two-electron atom is the simplest nontrivial quantum system not amenable to exact solutions. Today, its relevance in the development of quantum mechanics and its pedagogical value within the realm of atomic physics are widely recognized. In this work, an historical review of the known different methods and results devised to study such a problem is presented, with an emphasis to the calculations of the ground state energy of helium. Then we discuss several, related, unpublished results obtained around the same years by Ettore Majorana, which remained unknown till recent times. Among them a general variant of the variational method appears to be particularly interesting, even for current research in atomic and nuclear physics: it takes directly into account, already in the trial wavefunction, the action of the full Hamiltonian operator of a given quantum system. Further relevant contributions, specialized to the two-electron problem, include the introduction of the remarkable concept of an effective nuclear charge different for the two electrons (thus generalizing previous known results) and an application of the perturbative method, where the atomic number Z was treated effectively as a continuous variable. Finally a survey of results, relevant mainly for pedagogical reasons, is given; in particular we focus on simple broad range estimates of the helium ionization potential, obtained by suitable choices for the wavefunction, as well as on a simple alternative to Hylleraas' method, which led Majorana to first order calculations comparable in accuracy with well-known order 11 results derived, in turn, by Hylleraas. The purpose of this investigation was to collect information regarding rhinovirus (RV) circulation in children with lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in Burundi, Central Africa. We enrolled all of the children aged between 1 month and 14 years who were admitted to the hospital of Kiremba, North Burundi, with fever and signs and symptoms of LRTI (i.e., cough, tachypnea, dyspnea or respiratory distress, and breathing with grunting or wheezing sounds with rales) between 1 November 2010 and 31 October 2011, and obtained nasopharyngeal swabs for RV detection by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The VP4/VP2 region of the positive samples was sequenced to determine the species of RV (A, B, or C). Four hundred and sixty-two children were enrolled: 160 (34.6 %) with bronchitis, 35 (7.6 %) with infectious wheezing, and 267 (57.8 %) with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). RV infection was demonstrated in 186 patients [40.3 %; mean age ± standard deviation (SD) 1.77 ± 2.14 years]. RV infection was detected in 78 patients aged <12 months (40.0 %), 102 aged 12-48 months (44.3 %), and six aged >48 months (16.7 %; p < 0.01 vs. the other age groups). The most frequently identified RV was RV-A (81 cases, 43.5 %), followed by RV-C (47, 25.3 %) and RV-B (18, 9.7 %); subtyping was not possible in 40 cases (21.5 %). RV-A was significantly associated with bronchitis and CAP ( p < 0.01) and RV-C with wheezing ( p < 0.05). In Burundi, RVs are frequently detected in children with LRTIs. Severe cases occur more frequently in children with underlying chronic diseases; however, epidemiological studies have clearly shown that influenza also causes an excess of medical examinations, drug prescriptions and hospitalizations in otherwise healthy children (particularly those aged <5 years), as well as a considerable number of paediatric deaths. Childhood influenza also has a number of social and economic consequences. However, many European health authorities are still reluctant to include influenza vaccinations in their national vaccination programmes for healthy children because, among other things, there are doubts concerning their real ability to evoke a protective immune response, especially in children in the first years of life. New hope for the solution of these problems has come from the introduction of vaccines containing more antigens and the possibility of intradermal administration. However, contraindication to vaccination applies only to vaccines based on live attenuated viruses for the theoretical possibility that they might infect the fetus. In contrast, the use of several inactivated vaccines is useful and recommended. As a result of the transplacental passage of antibodies, maternal immunization can reduce the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases that may occur in the first months of life before the start or completion of the suggested vaccination schedule. One of the best examples is vaccination against influenza that can protect pregnant women from a disease that can lead to hospitalization and death in a significantly higher number of cases than in the general population and can induce protective specific antibody levels as well as being effective in infants in the first months of life. Other examples are vaccinations against tetanus, pertussis, pneumococcal infections and Haemophilus influenzae type b infection. Abstract: We review the non-trivial issue of the relativistic description of a quantum mechanical system that, contrary to a common belief, kept theoreticians busy from the end of 1920s to (at least) mid 1940s. Starting by the well-known works by Klein–Gordon and Dirac, we then give an account of the main results achieved by a variety of different authors, ranging from de Broglie to Proca, Majorana, Fierz–Pauli, Kemmer, Rarita–Schwinger and many others. A particular interest comes out for the general problem of the description of particles with arbitrary spin, introduced (and solved) by Majorana as early as 1932, and later reconsidered, within a different approach, by Dirac in 1936 and by Fierz–Pauli in 1939. The final settlement of the problem in 1945 by Bhabha, who came back to the general ideas introduced by Majorana in 1932, is discussed as well, and, by making recourse also to unpublished documents by Majorana, we are able to reconstruct the line of reasoning behind the Majorana and the Bhabha equations, as well as its evolution. Intriguingly enough, such an evolution was identical in the two authors, the difference being just the period of time required for that: probably few weeks in one case (Majorana), while more than ten years in the other one (Bhabha), with the contribution of several intermediate authors. The important unpublished contributions by Majorana anticipated later results obtained, in a more involved way, by de Broglie (1934) and by Duffin and Kemmer (1938-9), and testify the intermediate steps in the line of reasoning that led to the paper published in 1932 by Majorana, while Bhabha took benefit of the corresponding (later) published literature. Majorana’s paper of 1932, in fact, contrary to the more complicated Dirac–Fierz–Pauli formalism, resulted to be very difficult to fully understand (probably for its pregnant meaning and latent physical and mathematical content): as is clear from his letters, even Pauli (who suggested its reading to Bhabha) took about one year in 1940-1 to understand it. This just testifies for the difficulty of the problem, and for the depth of Majorana’s reasoning and results. The relevance for present day research of the issue here reviewed is outlined as well. The effects of heavy metals, both toxic (Pb, Cd) and essential (Cu, Zn) on the ultrastructure and the induction of Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70) have been studied in the aquatic moss Leptodictyum riparium Hedw. In vitro cultured L. riparium was treated with different heavy metals, both toxic, as cadmium or lead; and essential microelements such as Copper or Zinc concentrations ranging from 10−3 to 10−6 M to investigate both ultrastructural damage and HSP induction. TEM observations showed that sub-lethal concentrations of heavy metals caused only slight changes, largely localized in the chloroplasts. Among all the heavy metals tested, cadmium caused the most severe modifications. Heavy metals caused the decrease of the soluble protein content and the enhancement of proteins reacting versus HSP70 antibodies, suggesting that molecular chaperons might be involved in the resistance to toxic effects of lead, cadmium, copper and zinc. Therefore, the induction of HSP70 in L. riparium would confer a higher resistance to pollutants under stressful conditions lethal for other mosses and higher plant species. These results suggest that the moss L. riparium can tolerate heavy metals stress without incurring severe cellular/subcellular damage. A predator's foraging performance is related to its ability to acquire sufficient information on environmental profitability. This process can be affected by the patchy distribution and clustering of food resources and by the food intake process dynamics. We simulated body mass growth and behaviour in a forager acting in a patchy environment with patchy distribution of both prey abundance and body mass by an individual-based model. In our model, food intake was a discrete and stochastic process and leaving decision was based on the estimate of net energy gain and searching time during their foraging activities. The study aimed to investigate the effects of learning processes and food resource exploitation on body mass and survival of foragers under different scenarios of intra-patch resource distribution. The simulation output showed that different sources of resource variability between patches affected foraging efficiency differently. When prey abundance varied across patches, the predator stayed longer in poorest patches to obtain the information needed and its performance was affected by the cost of sampling and the resulting assessment of the environment proved unreliable. On the other hand, when prey body mass, but not abundance, varied among the patches the predator was quickly able to assess local profitability. The many recent researches into the mysterious disappearance of Ettore Majorana, one of the greatest minds of theoretical physics in the twentieth century, are summarised and discussed in some detail. The fate of the Italian scientist is argued to be intimately related to the final months of his life in Naples, from where he decided to disappear in March 1938. This analysis of accurate and detailed investigations performed in the last few years, together with facts already known, reveals a fascinating and intriguing picture, which was previously unexpected. We propose a simple phenomenological model predicting, through Lorentz symmetry breaking, a CPT-violating asymmetry between particle and antiparticle states in neutrino oscillations involving sterile neutrinos. Such a model is able to explain the apparently observed anomalous excess of low-energy νe-like events, reported by the MiniBooNE collaboration, as well as the non-observation of the corresponding anomalous excess of $\bar\nu_e$-like events. The present model leads to very specific physical predictions in the neutrino oscillations scenario, and account for the observed anomalies in terms of only one CPT-Lorentz violation parameter of the order of the Grand-Unification energy scale. Abstract: Light variation in temporal and spatial domains is a key constraint on the photosynthetic performance of phytoplankton. The most obvious responses are the modification of cell pigment content either to improve photocapture or to mitigate photo-damage. Very few studies have analyzed whether light variation significantly alters carbon assimilation, especially in a fluctuating light environment as in the mixed layer of the ocean. We addressed the question using a modeling approach, which allows the reproduction of most of the possible scenarios, obtained with great difficulty from laboratory or field experiments. The complete model is based on the dynamic coupling of a photoacclimation and photodamage-repair responses. In this combined model the virtual phytoplankton is exposed to different light regimes (steady, square wave, sinusoidal light–dark cycles and fluctuating regimes). The results reconcile controversial results on different photacclimation states achieved during fluctuating light regimes. The model produces a depression of carbon assimilation in any light fluctuating scenario, as compared to steady light regimes, due to the temporal delay between light fluctuations and photoresponses. These results suggest the possibility of selective pressure during evolution, more effective on photoprotective mechanisms than on optimization of light harvesting. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In terms of both high photo-thermal efficiency and high stability, multi-layer structures based on metal-dielectric composites (cermet) can be considered the most attractive selective solar absorbers for receiver tubes operating at medium-high temperatures in the field of solar thermodynamic plants. The double cermet layer approach represents a very simple fabrication method and can give high performances in terms of high solar absorptance and low hemispherical emittance. Optimised solar coatings based on cermet layers were fabricated in our laboratories by sputtering technique following the double layer approach. The joined employment of ellipsometric measurements and optical simulation is proposed as an effective method to optimise and fabricate coatings showing the best performances at a fixed operating temperature of the receiver tube. Interesting results concerning an optimised spectrally selective coating are shown. Solar absorptance higher than 0.94 and hemispherical emittance at 580 °C lower than 0.13 were obtained. Abstract: We propose a simple explanation of unconventional thermodynamical and magnetic properties observed for Sr2RuO4. Actually, our two-phase model of superconductivity, based on a straight generalization of the Ginzburg–Landau theory, does predict two jumps in the heat capacity as well as a double curve for the dependence of the critical temperature on an external magnetic field. Abstract: We present and analyze in detail an unknown theory of ferromagnetism developed by Ettore Majorana as early as the beginnings of 1930s, substantially different in the methods employed from the well-known Heisenberg theory of 1928 (and from later formulations by Bloch and others). Similarly to this, however, it describes successfully the main features of ferromagnetism, although the key equation for the spontaneous mean magnetization and the expression for the Curie temperature are different from those deduced in the Heisenberg theory (and in the original phenomenological Weiss theory). The theory presented here contains also a peculiar prediction for the number of nearest neighbors required to realize ferromagnetism, which avoids the corresponding arbitrary assumption made by Heisenberg on the basis of known (at that time) experimental observations. The aim of this study was to verify the frequency of atypical bacterial infections in children undergoing tonsillectomy because of severely recurrent acute tonsillopharyngitis (AT) and the possible benefit of surgery in cases in which Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydophila pneumoniae seem to play a role in causing the recurrences. A total of 118 patients (76 males; mean age ± standard deviation, 6.67 ± 3.31 years) were enrolled: 59 underwent tonsillectomy because of severely recurrent AT and 59 underwent adenotonsillectomy because of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The results show, for the first time, that the great majority of children with a history of severely recurrent AT (and, therefore, considered to be eligible for elective tonsillectomy) are infected by atypical bacteria, mainly M. pneumoniae, and that tonsillectomy seems to be effective in reducing the recurrence of both AT and acute respiratory disease during 12 months follow-up postsurgery. Aims To conduct a multicentre observational study to describe management of foot infections in diabetes in the out-patient setting in Italy. Patients and methods Ten centres equally distributed nationwide were asked to collect, by means of a spreadsheet (Access/Excel Microsoft program), data concerning 30 consecutive diabetic patients with foot infections deemed suitable for antibiotic treatment in the out-patient setting. Centres with ≥ 5 years’ experience of out-patient management were selected. Data from 271 consecutive patients treated as out-patients were collected and analysed by the central coordinator. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS statistical software package. Results Lesions were mainly located at the toes and midfoot (33.6 and 30.2%, respectively); 63 (23.2%) patients had multiple ulcers. Seventy (25.8%) patients also had concomitant osteomyelitis. Three hundred and four pathogens, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobes and anaerobes, were isolated in 219/271 patients (80.8%) by culturing debrided tissue (71.2%) or purulent material (28.8%). Infections were polymicrobial in 33.8% of patients. The most common pathogens were Staphylococcus aureus (27.3%) and Pseudomonas spp. (20.4%); enterobacteriaceae, enterococci, streptococci and anaerobes accounted for 11.5, 7.6, 6.9 and 1.9%, respectively. Antibiotics were frequently administered by parenteral route and frequently in combination. Piperacillin/tazobactam was the parenteral antibiotic most frequently utilized (21.1%). Cure/improvement was observed in 93.4% of patients. Conclusions Foot ulcers in diabetes are common and serious; the aetiology is often polymicrobial, often including S. aureus and Pseudomonas spp. Treatment in the out-patient setting is safe and effective, and penicillins together with β-lactamase inhibitors and fluoroquinolones are the most frequent choice. We succeed in building up a straightforward theoretical model for spin-triplet p-wave superconductors, by introducing a second-order parameter and a nonlinear interaction between the two mean fields in the Ginzburg–Landau theory. Such interaction breaks the isotropy of the original medium and allows pairs of electrons to arrange into S = 1 Cooper pairs. In order to evaluate the infectious agents associated with the first episode of severe acute wheezing in otherwise healthy infants and to define the role of each of them in recurrences, 85 patients in Italy, aged <12 months, hospitalized because of a first acute episode of wheezing, were prospectively enrolled between 1 October 2005 and 31 March 2006. Upon enrolment, nasopharyngeal swabs were collected for the real-time PCR detection of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) types A and B, influenza virus types A and B, adenovirus, parainfluenza viruses types 1, 2, 3 and 4, rhinovirus, human metapneumovirus, human coronavirus types 229E, OC43, NL63, and HKU1, bocavirus, enterovirus, and paraechovirus; nasopharyngeal aspirates were also obtained to detect atypical bacteria. At least one infectious agent was identified in 76 children (89.4%). RSV was the most frequently detected pathogen and its prevalence was significantly higher than that of the other pathogens in both age groups, and significantly higher in the children aged 3–12 months than in those aged <3 months. Only the children with RSV infection experienced recurrent wheezing. Viral load was significantly higher in children with than in those without recurrent wheezing. This study shows that RSV is the main reason for hospitalization during the first wheezing episode in infants, and that it appears to be the only pathogen associated with a high frequency of recurrences. Abstract: We have recently proposed a theoretical model for superconductors endowed with two distinct superconducting phases, described by two scalar order parameters which condensate at different critical temperatures. On analyzing the magnetic behavior of such systems, we have found some observable differences with respect to the case of ordinary Ginzburg–Landau superconductors. Background Peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin treatment resulted in fewer incidences of depression and flu-like symptoms than that of standard interferon/ribavirin, whereas peginterferon alfa-2b/ribavirin and standard interferon/ribavirin treatment resulted in similar incidences of these adverse events (AEs). Aim To assess the efficacy and safety of peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin in genotype 1-infected patients treated for up to 12 weeks with peginterferon alfa-2b/ribavirin but not achieving early virologic response (EVR) (non-EVR) or nontolerant (NT) because of depression, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, or injection-site reactions. Methods Nontolerants were treated for an additional 36 weeks and non-EVRs for an additional 60 weeks with peginterferon alfa-2a (180 μg/week)/ribavirin (1000/1200 mg/day). Patients with detectable HCV RNA after 12 weeks were discontinued. Results Of 25 NTs, 23 (92%) were HCV-RNA negative after 12 weeks on peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin and 14 (56%) achieved sustained virologic response. Of 32 non-EVRs to peginterferon alfa-2b/ribavirin, four (13%) achieved EVR with peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin and one (3%) achieved sustained virologic response. Four non-EVRs and 0 NTs were withdrawn for AEs; 26 (81%) and 24 (96%), respectively, completed peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin treatment or were withdrawn for insufficient response at week 12. In NTs, depression, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, and injection-site reactions declined during treatment. Conclusion Most patients who did not tolerate peginterferon alfa-2b/ribavirin because of AEs, and who completed the full 36-week course of peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin treatment, achieved sustained virologic response. A complete theoretical model describing artificial disintegration of nuclei by bombardment with α-particles, developed by Majorana as early as 1930, is discussed in detail jointly with the basic experimental evidences that motivated it. By following the quantum dynamics of a state resulting from the superposition of a discrete state with a continuum one, whose interaction is described by a given potential term, Majorana obtained (among the other predictions) the explicit expression for the integrated cross section of the nuclear process, which is the directly measurable quantity of interest in the experiments. Although this is the first application of the concept of quasi-stationary states to a Nuclear Physics problem, it seems also that the unpublished Majorana work anticipates by several years the related seminal paper by Fano on Atomic Physics. Abstract: In this paper, an accurate experimental investigation of the Mpemba effect (that is, of the fact that initially hot water freezes before the colder one) is carried out, showing that, in the adiabatic cooling of water, relevant roles are played by supercooling, and by phase transitions which take place at 6±1 ∘C,3.5±0.5 ∘C and 1.3±0.6 ∘C. The last transition, which occurs with the non-negligible probability of 0.21 with respect to the total number of runs performed, has not been detected earlier. On the basis of our experimental results, we can present a thorough theoretical analysis of supercooling and of such phase transitions, which are interpreted in terms of the different ordering of molecule clusters in water. Abstract: The recently proposed theoretical model of superconductors endowed with two distinct superconducting phases and critical temperatures is further analyzed by introducing two distinct order parameters, described by two scalar fields which condensate at different temperatures. We find some deviations in basic thermodynamical quantities with respect to the Ginzburg–Landau one-phase superconductors. In particular, in contrast to the usual case where only one jump in specific heat takes place at the normal-superconductor transition temperature, we actually predict an additional discontinuity for C V when passing from a superconducting phase to the other one. We give an accurate historical and scientific account of a practically unknown manuscript written by Ettore Majorana in French. The retrieved text deals with Quantum Electrodynamics by using the formalism of field quantization, and it is here reported, for the first time, in English translation. It is likely related to an invited talk for a conference at Leningrad (or Kharkov) in 1933 (or 1934) which, however, Majorana never attended. Probably this manuscript is one of the last missing papers of the “Senatore folder,” given by Majorana to one student of his at the University of Naples in 1938, just before his disappearance.
