Abstract: Lab.Oratorium (2019) is the concluding part of Philippe Manoury's Köln Trilogy. It follows In situ (2013) and Ring (2016) in exploring the spoken voice as a musical element, the wider possibilities of the orchestra, and the use of sound spatialization and live electronics. Lab.Oratorium is also a work deeply rooted in the present. In this interview, Philippe Manoury discusses the political and poetic significance of this work, conceived as an artistic response to Europe's responsibility in the tragic situation of migrants around the Mediterranean. He also develops his thoughts on musical form, spatialization and creative process in music.

Abstract: International audience; Detecting rapid, coincident changes across sensory modalities is essential for recognition of sudden threats or events. Using two-photon calcium imaging in identified cell types in awake, head-fixed mice, we show that, among the basic features of a sound envelope, loud sound onsets are a dominant feature coded by the auditory cortex neurons projecting to primary visual cortex (V1). In V1, a small number of layer 1 interneurons gates this cross-modal information flow in a context-dependent manner. In dark conditions, auditory cortex inputs lead to suppression of the V1 population. However, when sound input coincides with a visual stimulus, visual responses are boosted in V1, most strongly after loud sound onsets. Thus, a dynamic, asymmetric circuit connecting AC and V1 contributes to the encoding of visual events that are coincident with sounds.

Abstract: International audience; Amnesic shellfish poisoning is a potentially lethal human toxic syndrome which is caused by domoic acid (DA), a neurotoxin produced by marine phytoplankton, principally from Pseudonitzschia genus. In this report, a method to identify and quantify the DA toxin, with simultaneous identification of its photodegradation products, has been developed. It uses an ultra high performance liquid chromatography coupled to a quadrupole-time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometer (UHPLC–QTOF) after solid-phase extraction (SPE). An unambiguous identification of DA was carried out by considering both the retention time of DA in UHPLC and the exact mass of protonated DA molecule ([M + H] + = 312.1447 m/z) and of the most intense fragment ion (m/z 266.1391). The quantification was conducted using protonated DA molecule with protonated Glafenin as internal standard, obtaining a limits of detection of 0.75 µg L −1. Large screening with UHPLC–QTOF could also give structural information about degradation products of DA present in samples after UV-irradiation. This method was applied for the determination of DA in complex liquid samples after SPE and is applicable for environmental monitoring of this toxic substance in the aquatic environment. Abstract: International audience; CatOracle responds to the need to join high-level control of audio timbre with the organization of musical form in time. It is inspired by two powerful existing tools: CataRT for corpus-based concatenative synthesis based on the MuBu for Max library, and PyOracle for computer improvisation, combining for the first time audio descriptor analysis and learning and generation of musical structures. Harnessing a user-defined list of audio features, live or prerecorded audio is analyzed to construct an "Audio Oracle" as a basis for improvisation. CatOracle also extends features of classic concatenative synthesis to include live interactive audio mosaicking and score-based transcription using the Bach library for Max. The project suggests applications not only to live performance of written and improvised electroacoustic music, but also computer-assisted composition and musical analysis.

Abstract: International audience; Transporting waxy crude oils through long pipelines at low temperatures may be challenging due to its paraffinic components which lead to a complex (yielding) rheological behavior depending on the flow and thermal history. In order to evaluate those characteristics MRI velocimetry tests were performed with an equivalent model waxy fluid with macroscopic behavior analogous to waxy crude oils. This local flow data associated with stress measurement provide information on the effective fluid properties independently of possible flow heterogeneities. Here the rheological behavior of this fluid was observed for cooling under different shear conditions and for various flow histories at constant temperature. We show that after a significant destructuring it exhibits a yield stress fluid behavior with a low yield stress and some very slight thixotropy. However these rheological characteristics are strongly and irreversibly dependent on the maximum flow rate to which the fluid has been submitted after cooling, whatever the shear history during cooling is. In particular it exhibits a high apparent yield stress for cooling under low shear but, if it is then sheared at a higher shear rate, it will flow under much smaller stress whatever the subsequent flow history.

The main advantage of the distributed control architecture is to allow for a modular design of the control algorithms. The paper shows that the cooperative nature of the solution enables an initial decentralized design to be improved by properly choosing the relative priority assignment between subsystems.

Abstract: International audience; Colistin is a mixture of polymyxin E1 and E2, bactericidal pentacationic lipopeptides used to treat infections caused by Gram-negative pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Industrial production of colistin is obtained by a fermentation process of the natural producer Paenibacillus polymyxa var colistinus. NonRibosomal peptide synthetases (NRPS) coding the biosynthesis of polymyxins A, B and P have been recently described, rendering thereof the improvement of their production possible. However, the colistin biosynthesis pathway was not published so far. In this study, a Paenibacillus alvei has been identified by biochemical (Api 50 CH system) and molecular (16S rDNA sequencing) methods. Its culture supernatant displayed inhibitory activity against Gram-negative bacteria ( P. aeruginosa, K. pneumoniae, Salmonella spp.). Two polymyxins, E1 and E2, were recovered from the supernatant and were characterized by high resolution LC-MS. A genomic library (960 clones) was constructed to identify the gene cluster responsible for biosynthesis of polymyxins. Selection of the clones harbouring the sequences of interest was obtained by a simple PCR-based screening. We used primers targeting NRPS sequences leading to the incorporation of amino acids present in polymyxins E. The sequences from three clones of interest were assembled on 50.4 kb. Thus, five open reading frames corresponding to a new NRPS gene cluster of 41 kb were identified. In silico, analyses revealed the presence of three NRPS implicated in the biosynthesis of polymyxins E. This work provides insightful information on colistin biosynthesis and might contribute to future drug developments in this group of antibiotics.

Abstract: Si la mare de Baro est celebre pour sa peche annuelle rituelle, en revanche son fonctionnement hydrologique demeurait inconnu jusqu’a la mise en place d’un referentiel altimetrique pour le plan d’eau et la plaine alentour, mis en relation avec les hauteurs d’eau du Niandan. Les processus d’alimentation sont desormais cernes et une modelisation permet de mettre en evidence le role direct des precipitations et du ruissellement associe. La necessite d’un « reempoissonnement » annuel impose cependant le maintien d’une connexion avec le cours d’eau. Pour cela, le barrage projete de Fomi peut apporter une solution sous forme de crues artificielles peu consommatrices en eau du reservoir mais l’edification d’une passe vannee ou a batardeaux a l’entree du chenal naturel dans le bourrelet de berge, permettant de gerer les niveaux de la mare et de la plaine rizicole, est imperative.

Abstract: During the examination of a collection made by the authors in 2009 in San Pedro de Atacama (Antofagasta Region, Chile) one specimen was identified as Bryum incacorralis Herzog, a moss not previously known from Chile (Müller, 2009) and easily confused with some species of Philonotis Brid. (Ochi, 1980). Comparison with the type material confirmed its identity (Holotype: Bolivia, Cochabamba: an Felsen der "Estradillas" bei Incacorral, 3000 m, Herzog s.n., JE! no. 04003475). Bryum incacorralis was first described by Herzog (1909) based on material collected in Cochabamba (Bolivia), and later recorded by Griffin (1977) and O'Shea (2010) from Venezuela. It is placed in the so-called sect. "Alpiniformia" within the genus Bryum which is characterized by the presence of ovate to ovate-lanceolate leaf shape, the costa ceasing just below the leaf apex, the very dense areolation of the leaf, and long, more or less clavate capsules (Ochi, 1980). This note constitute the first record of Bryum incacorralis from Chile, where the species was found in the highlands of the north part of the country, in San Pedro de Atacama, an arid high plateau placed at the east of Antofagasta, growing on soil between Laretia, at ca. 4000 m. Bryum incacorralis is a distinctive species characterized by small to medium sized plants, scarcely lustrous, with ovate-lanceolate leaves, not or hardily bordered, equally spaced through the stem, with an acuminate apex and an abruptly narrowed base; laminal cells hexagonal to short-rectangular, and a costa ceasing just below the apex. Chilean specimen is synoicous, with antheridia and archegonia mixed at the same gametoecium, with abundant filiform paraphyses longer than the sexual structures. In comparison with the type specimen, the Chilean sample is more robust, its leaves margin are little revolute, and the apex vary from mild to markedly abruptly acuminate, sometimes ending in a small mucro. Abstract: A new experimental setup, combining a custom-designed Schwarzschild-type Cassegrain-based microscope and an ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) spectrophotometer, has been developed, focusing the light beam down to 20 μm diameter. Optical absorption spectra (in the 300–2500 nm range) have been measured on micrometer-sized natural glass inclusions providing information on iron speciation in magmatic melts. The absence of contribution from the host crystal matrix provides a test of the efficiency of micro-focusing. A microthermometric stage has been adapted on the microscope for measuring optical absorption spectra up to 900 K with application to the thermochromism of minute natural spinel crystals (MgAl2O4:Fe2+,Cr3+). This experimental setup provides an easy and fast way to follow the evolution of spectral properties and color of glasses or crystals with temperature as well as the possibility of measuring spatially resolved optical absorption spectra.

Abstract: cote interne IRCAM: Misdariis14c; None / None; National audience; The silence of Quiet Vehicles – especially, Hybrid or Electric Vehicles – is a crucial issue in terms of safety, ergonomics or even ecology which becomes to be largely studied either in a research or development point of view. Most of the works done in that domain are based on experiments which try to measure presence and emergence of such vehicles in real, or simulated, environment and to evaluate their detectabilty, in the same contexts, while being equipped with extra sounds specifically designed for fulfilling basic functional conditions with regards to nearby pedestrians or other road users. In this necessary experimental workflow, we assume that simulation approach – or, more generally, virtual reality – is a potentially powerful and valid paradigm to test the contextual impact of a large number of propositions and to conduct controled laboratory experiments for evaluation. This paper will then present the first step of the development of an audio simulation based on Ambisonics field recordings in various urban locations, multi-channel audio rendering and mock-up of different audio scenarios for insertion of one or multiple QV sound signatures in a given sound scene. Next steps – together with general stakes and perspectives – of this approach will also be presented and discussed.

However, we currently understand better auditory processing in the frequency domain than in the temporal domain. Recently, auditory psychophysics showed that humans perceive a sound whose intensity increases as louder than a sound whose intensity decreases over time, although the overall intensity of the sounds are the same. The underlying neuronal mechanisms of this striking perceptual asymmetry are still elusive. To test if the direction of intensity variation is asymmetrically processed by the auditory system, we have recorded the activity of large populations of neurons in the auditory cortex of awake mice while playing sounds of ramping-up and ramping-down intensities with various durations. We observed that long ramps (> 250ms) produce complex cortical population dynamics with different sets of neurons ?ring at the beginning compared to the end of the ramps. This indicates that the coding of intensity variations coding is strongly distributed in the auditory cortex. More interestingly, we observed that population ?ring rate is overall larger for increasing ramps than for decreasing ramps, suggesting that, also for mice, sounds ramping up could be perceptually more salient than sounds ramping down. To test this hypothesis, we performed behavioral experiments in which the saliency of a sound is measured through associative learning speed. We observed that increasing ramps are more rapidly associated to a correct behavior than decreasing ramps, showing that increasing sound intensities are more salient than decreasing sound intensities for mice. Altogether, these novel observations indicate that strongly non-linear processes in the auditory system shape both the perception and the cortical representation of time-varying sounds, to eventually reinforce rising and thus potentially approaching sound sources.

Abstract: cote interne IRCAM: Lafay14a; None / None; National audience; In this paper, we aim at better understanding how human mental representations are structured in the specific case of the perception of urban soundscapes. This task is traditionally studied using questionnaires, surveys or categorization tasks followed by a lexical analysis. In contrast, we propose a new experimental approach to tackle this aim. In this approach, the subject is asked to manipulate sound events and textures within a dedicated computer environment in order to recreate two complex urban soundscapes, one ideal and the other not ideal. Subjects have access to a sound data set which has been designed and structured based upon perceptual considerations, and may alter the physical parameters of the selected sound samples. In order to achieve this, we use an audio-digital environment and a web audio interface for sound mining developed for the purposes of this study. The latter allows subjects to explore a sound database without resorting to text. By focusing on the auditory modality during the experimental process, this new paradigm potentially allows the subject to be better put in context and provides a more detailed description of the actual mental representations. In the light of the results presented in this paper, it seems that it also reduces the potential bias of only using verbalization during the experiment. After a presentation of our experimental protocol and the computer environment on which it depends, we will detail the results obtained during a pilot study achieved with ten subjects. We will stress the di erences between using this paradigm and one based on questionnaires.

Abstract: cote interne IRCAM: Cacciatore13a; None / None; National audience; Tamonontamo (2012) is a piece for amplified vocal quartet, choir of 24 singers and live electronics. The focus of this article is about the work made in collaboration with the Real-Time Music Interaction Team of Ircam. Augustin Muller, computer music programmer working with me at Ircam for this project, upgraded the CataRT software adding a Spat~ module to relate the corpus-based synthesis with the spatialization. In most of works the spatialization of sounds depends from the aesthetic choose of the composer. The Spat~ software allows the drawing in the space of linear movements of a source among a pre-selected number of loudspeakers with a user-friendly graphical interface. In this patch, we used Spat to spatialize the sounds in a non-linear way. The logic of spatialization depends on the pair of audio descriptors chosen in the set-up of the CataRT graphical display. In this sense, the aesthetic ideas of the composer refer not locally to each sound but on the choosing of the audio descriptors used for the x, y axis. A further Spat-related display has been implemented to split the space of analysis/playing from the space of diffusion of sounds. The implementation of the Unispring algorithm in the mnm.distribute external Max/MSP object allows the distribution of grains rescaling their position inside a pre-drawn sub-space. The interpolation between different shapes or the change of audio descriptors on the x, y axis for both displays can be programmed and made in real time. The storage of the synthesis as database (in a text file), allows the possibility to recall the analysis and recover the shapes drawn previously. Hiding and permanent deletion of some selected corpora in the database is also possible. The use of colour to work on the z axis is possible and is among the next step of this work. The upgrade of the use of Spat~ to an ambisonics system for diffusion of sounds represents the possibility to make—through the concatenative synthesis—a genuine work of 3D-sound-sculpting.

Abstract: cote interne IRCAM: Schwarz12b; None / None; National audience; We present a method, applicable to corpus-based concatenative synthesis and specifically to audio mosaicing, that assists the composer in exploring the relationship between the parameterization of a concatenative algorithm and the resulting similarity between the output sound and the original target soundfile. Rather than focus solely on straightforward imitation, our work is predicated upon the notion that similarity can be manifest in a variety of perceptually meaningful ways and that both semblance and dissemblance have compositional utility. Our method consists of visualizing a collection of concatenated outputs, each of which is a unique solution to the problem of matching the same target soundfile with the same sound database but using a different combination of descriptor weights. We create a solution space where the location of each output is modeled by its similarity to the target as well as its similarity to each other solution. Visualization and navigation of this space is made possible through a multi-dimensional scaling algorithm, permitting 2D browsing, aural feedback, and the composition of paths through the solution space. This meta-control framework helps to give the composer a more comprehensive understanding of concatenative potential. By arranging concatenated outputs into different regions of similarity and dissimilarity, the solution space provides a rich and expansive terrain for compositional exploration and discovery.

Abstract: cote interne IRCAM: Einbond12a; None / None; National audience; The need for fine-tuned microtonal pitch combined with the timbral richness of corpus-based concatenative synthesis has led to the development of a new tool for corpus-based pitch and loudness control in real time with CataRT. Drawing on recent research in feature modulation synthesis (FMS) as well as the bach library for MAX/MSP, we have implemented a set of new modules for CataRT that permit the user to define microtonal har- monies graphically and combine them with other audio descriptors to trigger concatenative synthesis in real or deferred time. Pitch information is generated from a pitch analysis or extracted from soundfile meta-data, and loudness may be controlled independently for different sound sets. Musical implementations already suggest promising results as well as future goals to generalize this approach to further timbral features for corpus-based FMS.

Abstract: Comprehensive information on the spatio-temporal dynamics of the vascular response is needed to underpin the signals used in hemodynamics-based functional imaging. It has recently been shown that red blood cells (RBCs) velocity and its changes can be extracted from wide-field optical imaging recordings of intrinsic absorption changes in cortex. Here, we describe a complete processing work-flow for reliable RBC velocity estimation in cortical networks. Several pre-processing steps are implemented: image co-registration, necessary to correct for small movements of the vasculature, semi-automatic image segmentation for fast and reproducible vessel selection, reconstruction of RBC trajectories patterns for each micro-vessel, and spatio-temporal filtering to enhance the desired data characteristics. The main analysis step is composed of two robust algorithms for estimating the RBCs' velocity field. Vessel diameter and its changes are also estimated, as well as local changes in backscattered light intensity. This full processing chain is implemented with a software suite that is freely distributed. The software uses efficient data management for handling the very large data sets obtained with in vivo optical imaging. It offers a complete and user-friendly graphical user interface with visualization tools for displaying and exploring data and results. A full data simulation framework is also provided in order to optimize the performances of the algorithm with respect to several characteristics of the data. We illustrate the performance of our method in three different cases of in vivo data. We first document the massive RBC speed response evoked by a spreading depression in anesthetized rat somato-sensory cortex. Second, we show the velocity response elicited by a visual stimulation in anesthetized cat visual cortex. Finally, we report, for the first time, visually-evoked RBC speed responses in an extended vascular network in awake monkey extrastriate cortex.

Abstract: MusiClef is a multimodal music benchmarking initiative that will be running a MediaEval 2012 Brave New Task on Multimodal Music Tagging. This paper describes the setup of this task, showing how it complements existing benchmarking initiatives and fosters less explored methodological directions in Music Information Retrieval. MusiClef deals with a concrete use case, encourages multimodal approaches based on these, and strives for transparency of results as much as possible. Transparency is encouraged at several levels and stages, from the feature extraction procedure up to the evaluation phase, in which a dedicated categorization of ground truth tags will be used to deepen the understanding of the relation between the proposed approaches and experimental results.

However, despite the clearly defined requirements of naturalness and flexibility, no automatic method has yet found widespread use. After clarifying the definition, terminology, and usages of sound texture synthesis, we will give an overview of the many existing methods and approaches, and the few available software implementations, and classify them by the synthesis model they are based on, such as subtractive or additive synthesis, granular synthesis, corpus-based concatenative synthesis, wavelets, or physical modeling. Additionally, an overview is given over analysis methods used for sound texture synthesis, such as segmentation, statistical modeling, timbral analysis, and modeling of transitions.

We introduce three levels of detail for sound (individual events, statistical texture, background din), to define a proximity profile around the listener. The smooth transition between the levels is assured alternatively by statistical modeling or audio impostors. The activation of the three levels is controlled by invisible and editable profile objects mapped to presets of audio process parameters. These also serve to balance the CPU load between the different audio processes. We have tested this method on various virtual scenes such as crowds, rain, foliage, or traffic.

We present here a novel way of modeling audio–graphic content for interactive 3D scenes with the concept of sound processes and their activation through 2D or 3D profiles. Many 3D applications today support both graphical and audio effects to provide a more realistic user experience; however a common model and interchange format for interactive audio–graphic scenes is still lacking. X3D is one of the most promising formats for 3D scene representation. It is extensible and supports simple spatial audio representation and almost all basic and advanced 3D computer graphics techniques. We therefore propose an extension of the X3D standard to represent the sound process and activation profile model for providing a rich audio–graphic description in X3D.

Abstract: International audience; — As reported by many recent studies, the mean time between failures of future post-petascale su-percomputers is likely to reduce, compared to the current situation. The most popular fault tolerance approach for MPI applications on HPC Platforms relies on coordinated checkpointing which raises two major issues: a) global restart wastes energy since all processes are forced to rollback even in the case of a single failure; b) checkpoint coordination may slow down the application execution because of congestions on I/O resources. Alternative approaches based on uncoordinated checkpointing and message logging require logging all messages, imposing a high memory/storage occupation and a significant overhead on communications. It has recently been observed that many MPI HPC applications are send-deterministic, allowing to design new fault tolerance protocols. In this paper, we propose an uncoordinated checkpointing protocol for send-deterministic MPI HPC applications that (i) logs only a subset of the application messages and (ii) does not require to restart systematically all processes when a failure occurs. We first describe our protocol and prove its correctness. Through experimental evaluations, we show that its implementation in MPICH2 has a negligible overhead on application performance. Then we perform a quantitative evaluation of the properties of our protocol using the NAS Benchmarks. Using a clustering approach, we demonstrate that this protocol actually succeeds to combine the two expected properties: a) it logs only a small fraction of the messages and b) it reduces by a factor approaching 2 the average number of processes to rollback compared to coordinated checkpointing.

Abstract: International audience; Measuring erythrocyte velocity in individual microvessels has important applications for biomedical and functional imaging. Recent multiphoton fluorescence microscopy approaches require injecting fluorescent tracers; moreover, only one or few vessels can be imaged at a time. To overcome these shortcomings, we used CCD-based optical imaging of intrinsic absorption changes in macroscopic vascular networks to record erythrocytes' trajectories over several mm2 of cortical surface. We then demonstrate the feasibility of erythrocyte velocity estimation from such wide-field data, using two robust, independent, algorithms. The first one is a recently published Radon transform-based algorithm that estimates erythrocyte velocity locally. We adapt it to data obtained in wide-field imaging and show, for the first time, its performance on such datasets. The second ("fasttrack") algorithm is novel. It is based on global energy minimization techniques to estimate the full spatiotemporal erythrocytes' trajectories inside vessels. We test the two algorithms on both simulated and biological data, obtained in rat cerebral cortex in a spreading depression experiment. On vessels with medium-slow erythrocyte velocities both algorithms performed well, allowing their usage as benchmark one for another. However, our novel fasttrack algorithm outperformed the other one for higher velocities, as encountered in the arterial network.

Abstract: cote interne IRCAM: Schwarz10a; None / None; National audience; Existing methods for sound texture synthesis are often concerned with the extension of a given recording, while keeping its overall properties and avoiding artefacts. However, they generally lack controllability of the resulting sound texture. After a review and classification of existing approaches, we propose two methods of statistical modeling of the audio descriptors of texture recordings using histograms and Gaussian mixture models. The models can be interpolated to steer the evolution of the sound texture between different target recordings (e.g. from light to heavy rain). Target descriptor values are stochastically drawn from the statistic models by inverse transform sampling to control corpus-based concatenative synthesis for the final sound generation, that can also be controlled interactively by navigation through the descriptor space. To better cover the target descriptor space, we expand the corpus by automatically generating variants of the source sounds with transformations applied, and storing only the resulting descriptors and the transformation parameters in the corpus.

Abstract: cote interne IRCAM: Einbond10a; National audience; Corpus-based concatenative synthesis presents unique possibilities for the visualization of audio descriptor data. These visualization tools can be applied to sound diffusion in the physical space of the concert hall using current spatialization technologies. Using CataRT and the FTM library for Max/MSP we develop a technique for the organization of a navigation space for synthesis based on user-defined spatial zones and informed by the perceptual concept of timbre space. Spatialization responds automatically to descriptor data and is controllable in real-time or can be recorded for later playback. This work has been realized in recent compositions for instruments, electronics, and sound installation using Wave Field Synthesis and Vector-Based Amplitude Panning. The goal is to place the listener in the midst of a virtual space of sounds organized by their descriptor data, simulating an immersion in timbre space.

Abstract: cote interne IRCAM: Cahen08a; None / None; National audience; La combinaison du son et de l'image a depuis longtemps été instanciée et étudiée et l'on sait classer et analyser les correspondances temporelles et spatiales entre ces médias. Ces correspondances sont en général au service d'une narration qu'elles viennent renforcer et participent à l'engagement cognitif du spectateur. La recherche présentée ici, vise à explorer de nouvelles dimensions d'une corrélation entre les perceptions visuelles et auditives dans le cadre d'installations interactives où le spectateur deviendrait acteur et même compositeur. Comment peut-on concevoir un environnement immersif, spatial, multimédia et multimodal qui permette à un spectateur de s'engager dans l'exploration d'un univers mixte fait de sons et de composantes graphiques ? Comment un utilisateur peut-il mieux s'approprier un ensemble de sons, une composition musicale, une base de données sonores ou une scène audio virtuelle ? Dans notre étude, le son a la prééminence sur l'image. Nous ne travaillons pas sur la sonification de l'espace, mais sur la conception d'un environnement hybride mêlant sources sonores et composantes géométriques où l'interaction et la navigation servent à l'appropriation d'un univers sonore, voire même à réaliser des compositions musicales. Ces recherches s'inscrivent dans le cadre du projet Énigmes sur les partitions navigables qui a été animé par Roland Cahen de 2006 à 2007 et qui a débouché sur la réalisation de plusieurs dispositifs de création sonore, plastique et visuelle.

Abstract: cote interne IRCAM: Schwarz08a; None / None; National audience; Corpus-based concatenative synthesis plays grains from a large corpus of segmented and descriptor-analysed sounds according to proximity to a target position in the descriptor space. This can be seen as a content-based extension to granular synthesis providing direct access to specific sound characteristics. The interactive concatenative sound synthesis system CataRT that realises real-time Corpus-based concatenative synthesis is implemented as a collection of Max/MSP patches using the FTM library. CataRT allows to explore the corpus interactively or via a written target score, to resynthesise an audio file or live input with the source sounds. We will show musical applications of pieces that explore the new concepts made possible by corpus-based concatenative synthesis.

Abstract: International audience; Plumage is an interface for interactive 3D audio/graphic scene browsing and design. The interface relies on the notion of tape heads in a sonic and graphic 3D space made of feathers associated with sound micro-samples. The spatial layout of the feathers is defined by sound parameters of the associated samples. The musical play is the outcome of a continuous and interactive navigation in the sound space controlled by direct manipulation of tape head trajectories. This work is based on the design of interactions. A simple and efficient audio graphic navigation is designed through the combination and synchronization of elementer sound object triggerings.; Plumage est une interface pour le contrôle interactif de la composition et du jeu de scènes graphiques et audio spatialisées. L'interface repose sur un environnement graphique 3D composé de têtes de lecture animées parcourant un espace sonore matérialisé par des plumes associées associées`associéesà des grains sonores (des micro-´ échantillons). La disposition spatiale des plumes repose sur des paramètres sonores deséchantillons qu'elles représentent. Plumage porte sur le design d'interaction. Abstract: cote interne IRCAM: Thiebaut07a; None / None; National audience; Although sound visualization and image sonification have been extensively used for scientific and artistic purposes, their combined effect is rarely considered. In this paper, we propose the use of an iterative visualization/sonification approach as a sound generation mechanism. In particular, we visualize sounds using a textural self-similarity representation, which is then analysed to generate control data for a granular synthesizer. Following an eco-systemic approach, the output of the synthesizer is then fed back into the system, thus generating a loop designed for the creation of novel time-evolving sounds. All the process is real-time, implemented in Max/MSP using the FTM library. A qualitative analysis of the approach is presented and complemented with a discussion about visualization and sonification issues in the context of sound design.

The development of this prototype concerned both hardware and software components: a small wireless sensor interface including accelerometers and gyroscopes, and an analysis system enabling gesture following and recognition. A first set of experiments was conducted with teenagers in a music theory class. The preliminary results were encouraging concerning the suitability of these developments in music education.

People have to take attention to the visual sign to get the information of train departure time, corridor number, change the train etc. However, some stations of SNCF, which is the national railway company, are very large and have many lines, for instance, TGV, domestic, international line, so that it takes long time to find the right way to corridor. Some people seem to lose their ways while they are moving at the station. Then we thought that it was necessary to make the sound navigation system not to lose the way, and passengers were smoothly guided to their right destinations. Before this experiment, some research had been done to find the problem at the station, and we got the conclusion that people felt difficult to go to another place from main platform. From these researches, we chose one place for the sound installation, which was the passage from main platform to another platform at Montparnasse station in Paris. This reason was that people had to use the long moving walkway for three times, there were some exits on this way, and they could not see the destination because another platform was upper stair. After recording and analyzing the ambient sound of the station, we made some three types of sounds that were Attention, Feedback, and Time-line. Attention and Feedback sounds tell us the right way, and Time-line sound tells us the distance to the destination. 30 subjects selected the sound that went well with the sound navigation system in the laboratory. The highest score sounds were installed at the actual station, and the evaluation experiment was conducted. Consequently, some problems have been improved.

This instrument is an acoustic violin with added sensing capabilities to measure the bow acceleration in realtime. We explain first the approach we developed to characterize bowing styles. Second, we describe the realtime implementation of the bowing style recognition system. Finally we describe an electro-acoustic music composition, Bogenlied, written for the augmented violin.

Abstract: cote interne IRCAM: Rasamimanana06a; None / None; National audience; We developed an ”augmented violin”, i.e. an acoustic instrument with added gesture capture capabilities to control electronic processes. We report here gesture analysis we performed on three different bow strokes, detache, martele and spiccato, using this augmented violin. Different features based on velocity and acceleration were considered. A linear discriminant analysis has been performed to estimate a minimum number of pertinent features necessary to model these bow stroke classes. We found that the maximum and minimum accelerations of a given stroke were efficient to parameterize the different bow stroke types, as well as differences in dynamics playing. Recognition rates were estimated using a kNN method with various training sets. We finally discuss that bow stroke recognition allows to relate the gesture data to music notation, while a bow stroke continuous parameterization can be related to continuous sound characteristics.

Abstract: cote interne IRCAM: Tardieu06c; None / None; National audience; En parallèle des travaux sur le confort acoustique des voyageurs en gare, la SNCF souhaite aussi évaluer l’apport du design sonore. L’objectif du travail présenté ici est alors de proposer des solutions de design sonore pour l’amélioration de l’usage d’une gare. Ce travail a été effectué en collaboration étroite avec l’équipe Perception et Design Sonores de l'Ircam dont l'un des objectifs vise à développer des outils méthodologiques adaptés pour analyser un contexte d'usage dans le but de faciliter l'utilisation d'un objet ou le trajet dans un espace grâce à l'apport du sonore. Après une étude préliminaire sur l’ambiance sonore dans les gares, une étude sur l’usage des gares a été effectuée dans l’objectif d’identifier les problèmes rencontrés par les usagers. La méthodologie employée repose sur l’analyse de trajets tests effectués par des voyageurs présélectionnés. Les résultats ont permis d’écrire un cahier des charges pour la création d’une signalétique sonore afin de résoudre les problèmes identifiés. Celle-ci a été créée par un compositeur puis testée et validée expérimentalement dans la gare de Paris Montparnasse.

Abstract: cote interne IRCAM: Schoonderwaldt06a; None / None; National audience; A cost-effective method was developed for the estimation of the bow velocity in violin playing, using an accelerometer on the bow in combination with point tracking using a standard video camera. The video data are used to detect the moments of bow direction changes. This information is used for piece-wise integration of the accelerometer signal, resulting in a drift-free reconstructed velocity signal with a high temporal resolution. The method was evaluated using a 3D motion capturing system, providing a reliable reference of the actual bow velocity. The method showed good results when the accelerometer and video stream are synchronized. Additional latency and jitter of the camera stream can importantly decrease the performance of the method, depending on the bow stroke type.
