We investigate the presence of hub-filament systems in a large sample of 146 active proto-clusters, using H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ J=1-0 molecular line data obtained from the ATOMS survey. We find that filaments are ubiquitous in proto-clusters, and hub-filament systems are very common from dense core scales ($\sim$0.1 pc) to clump/cloud scales ($\sim$1-10 pc). The proportion of proto-clusters containing hub-filament systems decreases with increasing dust temperature ($T_d$) and luminosity-to-mass ratios ($L/M$) of clumps, indicating that stellar feedback from H{\sc ii} regions gradually destroys the hub-filament systems as proto-clusters evolve. Clear velocity gradients are seen along the longest filaments with a mean velocity gradient of 8.71 km s$^{-1}$pc$^{-1}$ and a median velocity gradient of 5.54 km s$^{-1}$pc$^{-1}$. We find that velocity gradients are small for filament lengths larger than $\sim$1~pc, probably hinting at the existence of inertial inflows, although we cannot determine whether the latter are driven by large-scale turbulence or large-scale gravitational contraction. In contrast, velocity gradients below $\sim$1~pc dramatically increase as filament lengths decrease, indicating that the gravity of the hubs or cores starts to dominate gas infall at small scales. We present a numerical study of the gravity-driven filamentary flow arising in the presence of elongated perturbations embedded in a globally gravitationally unstable medium. We perform idealized simulations of the gravitational collapse of a moderate filamentary perturbation with a central enhancement (a core) embedded in either a uniform or a stratified background. Both simulations maintain the filamentary structure during the collapse, developing a hierarchical accretion flow from the cloud to the filament, and from the filament to the core. Only the stratified simulation produces a flat central density profile of filaments, best matching the observed Plummer-like profiles, supporting suggestions that molecular clouds may be preferentially flattened. The flow changes direction smoothly from the cloud to the filament, with no density divergence nor a shock developing at the filament’s axis during the prestellar evolution. The drainage of material by the filament-to-core accretion slows down the growth of the filament, causing the ratio of the core’s central density to the filament’s axial density to increase in time, and to diverge at the time when a singularity (protostar) forms in the core. We argue that the system should evolve towards a stationary state in which the filament-to-core accretion balances the cloud-to-filament one, and search for it in the simulations, but find no unambiguous evidence. However, we find that, after a period of accelerated increase, the filament’s linear mass density reaches a linear growth rate. The stationary state may be approached during the protostellar stage.

We present ALMA Band-3/7 observations towards "the Heart" of a massive hub-filament system (HFS) SDC335, to investigate its fragmentation and accretion. At a resolution of $\sim0.03$ pc, 3 mm continuum emission resolves two massive dense cores MM1 and MM2, with $383(^{+234}_{-120})$ $M_\odot$ (10-24% mass of "the Heart") and $74(^{+47}_{-24})$ $M_\odot$, respectively. With a resolution down to 0.01 pc, 0.87 mm continuum emission shows MM1 further fragments into six condensations and multi-transition lines of H$_2$CS provide temperature estimation. The relation between separation and mass of condensations at a scale of 0.01 pc favors turbulent Jeans fragmentation where the turbulence seems to be scale-free rather than scale-dependent. We use the H$^{13}$CO$^+$ (1-0) emission line to resolve the complex gas motion inside "the Heart" in position-position-velocity space. We identify four major gas streams connected to large-scale filaments, inheriting the anti-clockwise spiral pattern. Along these streams, gas feeds the central massive core MM1. Assuming an inclination angle of $45(\pm15)^{\circ}$ and a H$^{13}$CO$^+$ abundance of $5(\pm3)\times10^{-11}$, the total mass infall rate is estimated to be $2.40(\pm0.78)\times10^{-3}$ $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, numerically consistent with the accretion rates derived from the clump-scale spherical infall model and the core-scale outflows. The consistency suggests a continuous, near steady-state, and efficient accretion from global collapse, therefore ensuring core feeding. Whether ionization feedback triggers the formation of massive stars is highly debated. Using ALMA 3 mm observations with a spatial resolution of $\sim 0.05$ pc and a mass sensitivity of 1.1 $\rm M_\odot$ beam$^{-1}$ at 20 K, we investigate the star formation and gas flow structures within the ionizing feedback-driven structure, a clump-scale massive ($\gtrsim 1500$ $\rm M_\odot$) bright-rimmed cloud (BRC) associated with IRAS 18290-0924. This BRC is bound only if external compression from ionized gas is considered. A small-scale ($\lesssim1$ pc) age sequence along the direction of ionizing radiation is revealed for the embedded cores and protostars, which suggests triggered star formation via radiation-driven implosion (RDI). Furthermore, filamentary gas structures converge towards the cores located in the BRC's center, indicating that these filaments are fueling mass towards cores. The local core-scale mass infall rate derived from H$^{13}$CO$^+$ $J=1-0$ blue profile is of the same order of magnitude as the filamentary mass inflow rate, approximately 1 $\rm M_\odot$ kyr$^{-1}$. A photodissociation region (PDR) covering the irradiated clump surface is detected in several molecules, such as CCH, HCO$^+$, and CS whereas the spatial distribution stratification of these molecules is indistinct. CCH spectra of the PDR possibly indicate a photoevaporation flow leaving the clump surface with a projected velocity of $\sim2$ km s$^{-1}$. Our new observations show that RDI accompanied by a clump-fed process is operating in this massive BRC. We investigate the effect of numerical magnetic diffusion in magnetohydrodynamic simulations of magnetically supported molecular clouds. To this end, we have performed numerical studies on adaptive mesh isothermal simulations of marginally sub-critical molecular clouds. We find that simulations with low and intermediate resolutions collapse, contrary to what is theoretically expected. However, the simulation with the highest numerical resolution oscillates around an equilibrium state without collapsing. In order to quantify the numerical diffusion of the magnetic field, we ran a second suit of current-sheet simulations in which the numerical magnetic diffusion coefficient can be directly measured, and computed the corresponding diffusion times at various numerical resolutions. On this basis, we propose a criterion for the resolution of magnetic fields in MHD simulations based on requiring that the diffusion time to be larger than the characteristic timescale of the physical process responsible for the dynamic evolution of the structure., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. We investigate the origin of the observed scaling $j\sim R^{3/2}$ between the specific angular momentum $j$ and the radius $R$ of molecular clouds (MCs) and their their substructures, and of the observed near independence of $\beta$, the ratio of rotational to gravitational energy, from $R$. To this end, we measure the angular momentum (AM) of sets of particles in an SPH simulation of the formation, collapse and fragmentation of giant MCs. The sets of SPH particles are defined either as ``clumps'' (connected particle sets), or as lagrangian sets that conform a connected clump only at a certain time $\tdef$. We find that: {\it i)} Clumps evolve along the observed \jR\ relation at all times, {\it ii)} Lagrangian particle sets evolve along the observed relation when the volume containing them also contains a large number of other ``intruder'' particles. Otherwise, they evolve with $j\sim$ cst. {\it iii)} Tracking lagrangian sets to the future, we find that a subset of the SPH particles participates in the collapse, while another disperses away. {\it iv)} Noting that, under AM conservation, $\beta$ increases during contraction, we suggest that its near independence of radius may arise from the competition between this increase and an increase in the AM exchange rate at higher rotational energy density gradient. {\it v)} We suggest that, if MCs are globally dominated by gravity, the observed \jR\ relation arises because the observational selection of its dense structures amounts to selecting the fragments that have lost AM via Reynolds stresses from their neighbors., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, submitted to ApJ, comments welcome

We investigate the generation of turbulence during the prestellar gravitational contraction of a turbulent spherical core. We define the ratio $g$ of the one-dimensional turbulent velocity dispersion, $\sigma_\mathrm{1D}$ to the gravitational velocity $v_g$, to then analytically estimate $g$ under the assumptions of a) equipartition or virial equilibrium between the gravitational ($E_g$) and turbulent kinetic ($E_\mathrm{turb}$) energies and b) stationarity of transfer from gravitational to turbulent energy (implying $E_\mathrm{turb}/E_g=$cst). In the equipartition and virial cases, we find $g=\sqrt{1/3}\approx0.58$ and $g=\sqrt{1/6}\approx0.41$, respectively; in the stationary case we find $g=\langle v_\mathrm{rad}\rangle L_d/(4\pi\sqrt{3}\eta Rv_g)$, where $\eta$ is an efficiency factor, $L_d$ is the energy injection scale of the turbulence, and $R$ is the core's radius. Next, we perform AMR simulations of the prestellar collapse of an isothermal, transonic turbulent core at two different resolutions, and a non-turbulent control simulation. We find that the turbulent simulations collapse at the same rate as the non-turbulent one, so that the turbulence generation does not significantly slow down the collapse. We also find that a) the simulations approach near balance between the rates of energy injection from the collapse and of turbulence dissipation; b) $g\approx0.395\pm0.035$, close to the "virial" value (turbulence is $\sim35-40\%$ of non-thermal linewidth); c) the injection scale is $L_d\lesssim R$, and d) the "turbulent pressure" $\rho\sigma_\mathrm{1D}^2$ scales as $\sim\rho^{1.64}$, an apparently nearly-adiabatic scaling. We propose that this scaling and the nearly virial values of the turbulent velocity dispersion may be reconciled with the non-delayed collapse rate if the turbulence is dissipated as soon as it is generated., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. Molecular clouds are a fundamental ingredient of galaxies: they are the channels that transform the diffuse gas into stars. The detailed process of how they do it is not completely understood. We review the current knowledge of molecular clouds and their substructure from scales $\sim~$1~kpc down to the filament and core scale. We first review the mechanisms of cloud formation from the warm diffuse interstellar medium down to the cold and dense molecular clouds, the process of molecule formation and the role of the thermal and gravitational instabilities. We also discuss the main physical mechanisms through which clouds gather their mass, and note that all of them may have a role at various stages of the process. In order to understand the dynamics of clouds we then give a critical review of the widely used virial theorem, and its relation to the measurable properties of molecular clouds. Since these properties are the tools we have for understanding the dynamical state of clouds, we critically analyse them. We use two hydrodynamical simulations (with and without photoionising feedback) of the self-consistent evolution of molecular clouds (MCs) undergoing global hierarchical collapse (GHC), to study the effect of the feedback on the structural and kinematic properties of the gas and the stellar clusters formed in the clouds. During this early stage, the evolution of the two simulations is very similar (implying that the feedback from low mass stars does not affect the cloud-scale evolution significantly) and the star-forming region accretes faster than it can convert gas to stars, causing the instantaneous measured star formation efficiency (SFE) to remain low even in the absence of significant feedback. Afterwards, the ionising feedback first destroys the filamentary supply to star-forming hubs and ultimately removes the gas from it, thus first reducing the star formation (SF) and finally halting it. The ionising feedback also affects the initial kinematics and spatial distribution of the forming stars, because the gas being dispersed continues to form stars, which inherit its motion. In the non-feedback simulation, the groups remain highly compact and do not mix, while in the run with feedback, the gas dispersal causes each group to expand, and the cluster expansion thus consists of the combined expansion of the groups. Most secondary star-forming sites around the main hub are also present in the non-feedback run, implying a primordial rather than triggered nature. We do find one example of a peripheral star-forming site that appears only in the feedback run, thus having a triggered origin. Star formation is a multi-scale, multi-physics problem ranging from the size scale of molecular clouds ($\sim$10s pc) down to the size scales of dense prestellar cores ($\sim$0.1 pc) that are the birth sites of stars. Several physical processes like turbulence, magnetic fields and stellar feedback, such as radiation pressure and outflows, are more or less important for different stellar masses and size scales. During the last decade a variety of technological and computing advances have transformed our understanding of star formation through the use of multi-wavelength observations, large scale observational surveys, and multi-physics multi-dimensional numerical simulations. Additionally, the use of synthetic observations of simulations have provided a useful tool to interpret observational data and evaluate the importance of various physical processes on different scales in star formation. arXiv:2005.00801v2, Star clusters form in dense, hierarchically collapsing gas clouds. Bulk kinetic energy is transformed to turbulence with stars forming from cores fed by filaments. In the most compact regions, stellar feedback is least effective in removing the gas and stars may form very efficiently. These are also the regions where, in high-mass clusters, ejecta from some kind of high-mass stars are effectively captured during the formation phase of some of the low mass stars and channeled into the latter to form multiple populations. Star formation epochs in star clusters are generally set by gas flows that determine the abundance of gas in the cluster. We argue that there is likely only one star formation epoch after which clusters remain essentially clear of gas by cluster winds. Collisional dynamics is important in this phase leading to core collapse, expansion and eventual dispersion of every cluster. We study the gravitationally-dominated, accretion-driven evolution of a prestellar core. In our model, as the core's density increases, it remains immersed in a constant-density environment and so it accretes from this environment, increasing its mass and reducing its Jeans length. Assuming a power-law density profile $\rho \propto r^{-p}$, we compute the rate of change of the slope $p$, and show that the value $p=2$ is stationary, and furthermore, an attractor. We compare dense clumps and cores in a numerical simulation of molecular clouds (MCs) undergoing global hierarchical collapse (GHC) to observations in two MCs at different evolutionary stages, the Pipe and the G14.225 clouds, to test the ability of the GHC scenario to follow the early evolution of the energy budget and star formation activity of these structures. In the simulation, we select a region that contains cores of sizes and densities similar to the Pipe cores, and find that it evolves through accretion, developing substructure similar to that of G14.225 cloud after $\sim 1.6$ Myr. Within this region, we follow the evolution of the Larson ratio $\mathcal{L} \equiv \sigma_{\rm v}/R^{1/2}$, where $\sigma_{\rm v}$ is the velocity dispersion and $R$ is the size, the virial parameter $\alpha$, and the star formation activity of the cores/clumps. In the simulation, we find that as the region evolves: $i)$ its clumps have $\mathcal{L}$ and $\alpha$ values first consistent with those of the Pipe substructures and later with those of G14.225; $ii)$ the individual cores first exhibit a decrease in $\alpha$ followed by an increase when star formation begins; $iii)$ collectively, the ensemble of cores/clumps reproduces the observed trend of lower $\alpha$ for higher-mass objects, and $iv)$ the star formation rate and star formation efficiency increase monotonically. We suggest that this evolution is due to the simultaneous loss of externally-driven compressive kinetic energy and increase of the self-gravity-driven motions. We conclude that the GHC scenario provides a realistic description of the evolution of the energy budget of the clouds' substructure at early times, which occurs simultaneously with an evolution of the star formation activity., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a unified description of the scenario of Global Hierarchical Collapse and fragmentation (GHC) in molecular clouds (MCs), owing to the continuous decrease of the average Jeans mass in the contracting cloud. GHC constitutes a regime of collapses within collapses, in which small-scale collapses begin at later times, but occur on shorter timescales than large-scale ones. The difference in timescales allows for most of the clouds' mass to be dispersed by feedback from the first massive stars, maintaining the global star formation rate low. All scales accrete from their parent structures. The main features of GHC are: star-forming MCs are in an essentially pressureless regime, which produces filaments that accrete onto clumps and cores ("hubs"). The filaments constitute the collapse flow from cloud to hub scales and may approach a quasi-stationary state; the molecular and dense mass fractions of the clouds increase over time; the first (low-mass) stars appear several Myr after global contraction began; more massive stars appear after a few Myr in massive hubs resulting from the collapse of larger scales; the minimum fragment mass may extend well into the brown-dwarf regime; Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion occurs at the protostellar and core scales, accounting for a near-Salpeter IMF; the extreme anisotropy of the filamentary network explains the difficulty in detecting large-scale infall signatures; the balance between inertial and gravitationally-driven motions in clumps evolves during the contraction; prestellar cores adopt Bonnor-Ebert-like profiles, but are contracting ever since early times when they may appear to be unbound and to require pressure confinement; stellar clusters develop radial age and mass segregation gradients. We present radiation-magnetohydrodynamic simulations aimed at studying evolutionary properties of H\,{\normalsize II} regions in turbulent, magnetised, and collapsing molecular clouds formed by converging flows in the warm neutral medium. We focus on the structure, dynamics and expansion laws of these regions. Once a massive star forms in our highly structured clouds, its ionising radiation eventually stops the accretion (through filaments) toward the massive star-forming regions. The new over-pressured H\,{\normalsize II} regions push away the dense gas, thus disrupting the more massive collapse centres. Also, because of the complex density structure in the cloud, the H\,{\normalsize II} regions expand in a hybrid manner: they virtually do not expand toward the densest regions (cores), while they expand according to the classical analytical result towards the rest of the cloud, and in an accelerated way, as a blister region, towards the diffuse medium. Thus, the ionised regions grow anisotropically, and the ionising stars generally appear off-centre of the regions. Finally, we find that the hypotheses assumed in standard H\,{\normalsize II}-region expansion models (fully embedded region, blister-type, or expansion in a density gradient) apply simultaneously in different parts of our simulated H\,{\normalsize II} regions, producing a net expansion law ($R \propto t^\alpha$, with $\alpha$ in the range of 0.93-1.47 and a mean value of $1.2 \pm 0.17$) that differs from any of those of the standard models., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use magnetohydrodynamical simulations of converging warm neutral medium flows to analyse the formation and global evolution of magnetised and turbulent molecular clouds subject to supernova feedback from massive stars. We show that supernova feedback alone fails to disrupt entire, gravitationally bound, molecular clouds, but is able to disperse small--sized (~10 pc) regions on timescales of less than 1 Myr. Efficient radiative cooling of the supernova remnant as well as strong compression of the surrounding gas result in non-persistent energy and momentum input from the supernovae. However, if the time between subsequent supernovae is short and they are clustered, large hot bubbles form that disperse larger regions of the parental cloud. On longer timescales, supernova feedback increases the amount of gas with moderate temperatures (T~300-3000 K). Despite its inability to disrupt molecular clouds, supernova feedback leaves a strong imprint on the star formation process. Context: Atomic and molecular cloud formation is a dynamical process. However, kinematic signatures of these processes are still observationally poorly constrained. Methods: Targeting the cloud-scale environment of the prototypical infrared dark cloud G28.3, we employ spectral line imaging observations of the two atomic lines HI and [CI] as well as molecular lines observations in 13CO in the 1--0 and 3--2 transitions. The analysis comprises investigations of the kinematic properties of the different tracers, estimates of the mass flow rates, velocity structure functions, a Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) study as well as comparisons to simulations. Results: The central IRDC is embedded in a more diffuse envelope of cold neutral medium (CNM) traced by HI self-absorption (HISA) and molecular gas. The spectral line data as well as the HOG and structure function analysis indicate a possible kinematic decoupling of the HI from the other gas compounds. Spectral analysis and position-velocity diagrams reveal two velocity components that converge at the position of the IRDC. Estimated mass flow rates appear rather constant from the cloud edge toward the center. The velocity structure function analysis is consistent with gas flows being dominated by the formation of hierarchical structures. Conclusions: The observations and analysis are consistent with a picture where the IRDC G28 is formed at the center of two converging gas flows. While the approximately constant mass flow rates are consistent with a self-similar, gravitationally driven collapse of the cloud, external compression by, e.g., spiral arm shocks or supernovae explosions cannot be excluded yet. We explore the structure of magnetic field lines in and around filaments in simulations of molecular clouds undergoing global, multi-scale gravitational collapse. In these simulations, filaments are not in a static equilibrium, but are long-lived flow structures that accrete gas from their environment and direct it toward clumps embedded in the filament or at the nodes at the conjunction with other filaments. In this context, the magnetic field is dragged by the collapsing gas, so its structure must reflect the flow that generates the filament. Around the filament, the gas is accreted onto it, and the magnetic lines must then be perpendicular to the filament. As the gas density increases, the gas flow changes direction, becoming almost parallel to the filament, and magnetic lines also tend to align with it. At the spine of the filament, however, magnetic lines become perpendicular again since they must connect to lines on the opposite side of the filament, resulting in "U"-shaped magnetic structures, which tend to be stretched by the longitudinal flow along the filament. Magnetic diffusive processes, however, allow the gas to continue to flow. Assuming a stationary state in which the ram pressure of the flow balances the magnetic tension, the curvature of the field lines is determined by the diffusion rate. We derive an expression relating the curvature of the field lines to the diffusive coefficient, which may be used to observationally determine the nature of the diffusive process., Submitted to MNRAS

In previous contributions, we have presented an analytical model describing the evolution of molecular clouds (MCs) undergoing hierarchical gravitational contraction. The cloud's evolution is characterized by an initial increase in its mass, density, and star formation rate (SFR) and efficiency (SFE) as it contracts, followed by a decrease of these quantities as newly formed massive stars begin to disrupt the cloud. The main parameter of the model is the maximum mass reached by the cloud during its evolution. Thus, specifying the instantaneous mass and some other variable completely determines the cloud's evolutionary stage. We apply the model to interpret the observed scatter in SFEs of the cloud sample compiled by Lada et al.\ as an evolutionary effect so that, although clouds such as California and Orion A have similar masses, they are in very different evolutionary stages, causing their very different observed SFRs and SFEs. The model predicts that the California cloud will eventually reach a significantly larger total mass than the Orion A cloud. Next, we apply the model to derive estimated ages of the clouds since the time when approximately 25\% of their mass had become molecular. We find ages from $\sim 1.5$ to 27 Myr, with the most inactive clouds being the youngest. Further predictions of the model are that clouds with very low SFEs should have massive atomic envelopes constituting the majority of their gravitational mass, and that low-mass clouds ($M \sim 10^3$-$10^4 \, M_\odot$) end their lives with a mini-burst of star formation, reaching SFRs $\sim 300$-$500\, M_\odot$ Myr$^{-1}$. Modeling emission lines from the millimeter to the UV and producing synthetic spectra is crucial for a good understanding of observations, yet it is an art filled with hazards. This is the proceedings of "Walking the Line", a 3-day conference held in 2018 that brought together scientists working on different aspects of emission line simulations, in order to share knowledge and discuss the methodology. Emission lines across the spectrum from the millimeter to the UV were discussed, with most of the focus on the interstellar medium, but also some topics on the circumgalactic medium. The most important quality of a useful model is a good synergy with observations and experiments. Challenges in simulating line emission are identified, some of which are already being worked upon, and others that must be addressed in the future for models to agree with observations. Recent advances in several areas aiming at achieving that synergy are summarized here, from micro-physical to galactic and circum-galactic scale., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables. We discuss the mechanism of cluster formation in hierarchically collapsing molecular clouds. Recent evidence, both observational and numerical, suggests that molecular clouds (MCs) may be undergoing global, hierarchical gravitational collapse. The "hierarchical" regime consists of small-scale collapses within larger-scale ones. The latter implies that the star formation rate increases systematically during the early stages of evolution, and occurs via filamentary flows onto "hubs" of higher density, mass, and velocity dispersion, and culminates a few Myr after than the small-scale collapses have started to form stars. In turn, the small-scale collapses occur in clumps embedded in the filaments, and are themselves falling into the larger potential well of the still-ongoing large-scale collapse. The stars formed in the early, small-scale collapses share the infall motion of their parent clumps towards the larger potential trough, so that the filaments feed both gaseous and stellar material to the hubs. This leads to the presence of older stars in a region where new protostars are still forming, to a scale-free or fractal structure of the clusters, in which each unit is composed of smaller-scale ones, and to the eventual merging of the subunits, explaining the observed structural features of open clusters., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, to appear in the proceedings of IAU Symposium 316: Formation, Evolution, and Survival of Massive Star Clusters

The Hierarchical Gravitational Fragmentation scenario is investigated through numerical simulations of the prestellar stages of the collapse of a marginally gravitationally unstable isothermal sphere immersed in a strongly gravitationally unstable, uniform background medium. The core developes a Bonnor–Ebert (BE)-like density profile, while at the time of singularity (the protostar) formation the envelope approaches a singular-isothermal sphere (SIS)-like r^−2 density profile. However, these structures are never hydrostatic. In this case, the central flat region is characterized by an infall speed linear with radius, while the envelope is characterized by a uniform infall speed. This implies that the hydrostatic SIS initial condition leading to Shuʼs classical inside-out solution is not expected to occur, and therefore neither should the inside-out solution. Instead, the solution collapses from the outside-in, naturally explaining the observation of extended infall velocities. The core, defined by the radius at which it merges with the background, has time-variable mass and radius, and evolves along the locus of the ensemble of observed prestellar cores in a plot of Mcore/MBE versus Mcore, spanning the range from the “stable” to the “unstable” regimes, even though it is collapsing at all times. We conclude that the presence of an unstable background allows a core to evolve dynamically from the time when it first appears, even when it resembles a pressure-confined, stable BE-sphere. Partially ionized plasmas are found across the Universe in many different astrophysical environments. They constitute an essential ingredient of the solar atmosphere, molecular clouds, planetary ionospheres and protoplanetary disks, among other environments, and display a richness of physical effects which are not present in fully ionized plasmas. This review provides an overview of the physics of partially ionized plasmas, including recent advances in different astrophysical areas in which partial ionization plays a fundamental role. We study the dynamical state of cores by using a simple analytical model, a sample of observational massive cores, and numerical simulations of collapsing massive cores. From the model, we find that, if cores are formed from turbulent compressions, they evolve from small to large column densities, increasing their velocity dispersion as they collapse, while they tend to equipartition between gravity and kinetic energy. From the observational sample, we find that: (a) cores with substantially different column densities in the sample do not follow a Larson-like linewidth-size relation. Instead, cores with higher column densities tend to be located in the upper-left corner of the Larson velocity dispersion-size diagram, a result predicted previously (Ballesteros-Paredes et al. 2011a). (b) The data exhibit cores with overvirial values. Finally, in the simulations we reproduce the behavior depicted by the model and observational sample: cores evolve towards larger velocity dispersions and smaller sizes as they collapse and increase their column density. However, collapsing cores appear to approach overvirial states within a free-fall time. The cause of this apparent excess of kinetic energy is an underestimation of the gravitational energy, due to the assumption that the gravitational energy is given by the energy of an isolated sphere of constant column density. This excess disappears when the gravitational energy is correctly calculated from the actual spatial mass distribution, where inhomogeneities, as well as the potential due to the mass outside of the core, also contribute to the gravitational energy. We conclude that the observed energy budget of cores in surveys is consistent with their non-thermal motions being driven by their self-gravity and in a hierarchical and chaotic collapse., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. Motivated by recent numerical simulations of molecular cloud (MC)evolution, in which the clouds engage in global gravitational contraction, and local collapse events culminate significantly earlier than the global collapse, we investigate the growth of density perturbations embedded in a collapsing background, to which we refer as an Inverse Hubble Flow (IHF). We use the standard procedure for the growth of perturbations in a universe that first expands (the usual Hubble Flow) and then recollapses (the IHF). We find that linear density perturbations immersed in an IHF grow faster than perturbations evolving in a static background (the standard Jeans analysis). A fundamental distinction between the two regimes is that, in the Jeans case, the time $\tau_\mathrm{nl}$ for a density fluctuation to become nonlinear increases without limit as its initial value approaches zero, while in the IHF case $\tau_\mathrm{nl} \le \tau_\mathrm{ff}$ always, where $\tau_\mathrm{ff}$ is the free-fall time of the background density. We suggest that this effect, although moderate, implies that small-scale density fluctuations embedded in globally-collapsing clouds must collapse earlier than their parent cloud, regardless of whether the initial amplitude of the fluctuations is moderate or strongly nonlinear, thus allowing the classical mechanism of Hoyle fragmentation to operate in multi-Jeans-mass MCs. More fundamentally, our results show that, contrary to the standard paradigm that fluctuations of all scales grow at the same rate in the linear regime, the hierarchical nesting of the fluctuations of different scales does affect their growth even in the linear stage., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures; published in MNRAS

In this contribution, we test our previously published one-dimensional PDR model for deriving total hydrogen volume densities from HI column density measurements in extragalactic regions by applying it to the Taurus molecular cloud, where its predictions can be compared to available data. Also, we make the first direct detailed comparison of our model to CO(1-0) and far-infrared emission. Using an incident UV flux G0 of 4.25 ({\chi} = 5) throughout the main body of the cloud, we derive total hydrogen volume densities of \approx 430 cm-3, consistent with the extensive literature available on Taurus. The distribution of the volume densities shows a log-normal shape with a hint of a power-law shape on the high density end. We convert our volume densities to H2 column densities assuming a cloud depth of 5 parsec and compare these column densities to observed CO emission. We find a slope equivalent to a CO conversion factor relation that is on the low end of reported values for this factor in the literature (0.9 x 1020 cm-2 (K km s-1)-1), although this value is directly proportional to our assumed value of G0 as well as the cloud depth. We seem to under-predict the total hydrogen gas as compared to 100 {\mu}m dust emission, which we speculate may be caused by a higher actual G0 incident on the Taurus cloud than is generally assumed., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures. The interstellar medium (ISM) is subject, on one hand, to heating and cooling processes that tend to segregate it into distinct phases due to thermal instability (TI), and on the other, to turbulence-driving mechanisms that tend to produce strong nonlinear fluctuations in all the thermodynamic variables. In this regime, large-scale turbulent compressions in the stable warm neutral medium (WNM) dominate the clump-formation process rather than the linear developent of TI. Cold clumps formed by this mechanism are still often bounded by sharp density and temperature discontinuities, which however are not contact discontinuities as in the classical 2-phase model, but rather “phase transition fronts”, across which there is net mass and momentum flux from the WNM into the clumps. The clumps grow mainly by accretion through their boundaries, are in both thermal and ram pressure balance with their surroundings, and are internally turbulent as well, thus also having significant density fluctuations inside. The temperature and density of the cold and warm gas around the phase transition fronts fluctuate with time and location due to fluctuations in the turbulent pressure. Moreover, shock-compressed diffuse unstable gas can remain in the unstable regime for up to a few Myr before it undergoes a phase transition to the cold phase, and is furthermore constantly replenished by the turbulence. These processes populate the classically forbidden density and temperature ranges. Since gas at all temperatures appears to be present in bi- or tri-stable turbulence, we conclude that the word “phase” applies only locally, surrounding phase transition sites in the gas. Globally, the word “phase” must relax its meaning to simply denote a certain temperature or density range.

It has been recently shown that molecular clouds do not exhibit a unique shape for the column density probability distribution function (Npdf). Instead, clouds without star formation seem to possess a lognormal distribution, while clouds with active star formation develope a power-law tail at high column densities. The lognormal behavior of the Npdf has been interpreted in terms of turbulent motions dominating the dynamics of the clouds, while the power-law behavior occurs when the cloud is dominated by gravity. In the present contribution we use thermally bi-stable numerical simulations of cloud formation and evolution to show that, indeed, these two regimes can be understood in terms of the formation and evolution of molecular clouds: a very narrow lognormal regime appears when the cloud is being assembled. However, as the global gravitational contraction occurs, the initial density fluctuations are enhanced, resulting, first, in a wider lognormal Npdf, and later, in a power-law Npdf. We thus suggest that the observed Npdf of molecular clouds are a manifestation of their global gravitationally contracting state. We also show that, contrary to recent suggestions, the exact value of the power-law slope is not unique, as it depends on the projection in which the cloud is being observed.

We investigate the formation and evolution of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) by the collision of convergent warm neutral medium (WNM) streams in the interstellar medium, in the presence of magnetic fields and ambipolar diffusion (AD), focusing on the evolution of the star formation rate (SFR) and efficiency (SFE), as well as of the mass-to-magnetic-flux ratio (M2FR) in the forming clouds. We find that: 1) Clouds formed by supercritical inflow streams proceed directly to collapse, while clouds formed by subcritical streams first contract and then re-expand, oscillating on the scale of tens of Myr. 2) Our suite of simulations with initial magnetic field strength of 2, 3, and 4 $\mu\G$ show that only supercritical or marginal critical streams lead to reasonable star forming rates. 3) The GMC's M2FR is a generally increasing function of time, whose growth rate depends on the details of how mass is added to the GMC from the WNM. 4) The M2FR is a highly fluctuating function of position in the clouds. 5) In our simulations, the SFE approaches stationarity, because mass is added to the GMC at a similar rate at which it converts mass to stars. In such an approximately stationary regime, the SFE provides a proxy of the supercritical mass fraction in the cloud. 6) We observe the occurrence of buoyancy of the low-M2FR regions within the gravitationally-contracting GMCs, so that the latter naturally segregate into a high-density, high-M2FR "core" and a low-density, low-M2FR "envelope", without the intervention of AD. We present the results of radiation-magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the expansion of HII regions and surrounding photodissociation regions in turbulent, magnetised, molecular clouds on scales of up to 4 parsecs, including the effects of ionising and non-ionising ultraviolet radiation and x rays from young star clusters. We find that HII region expansion reduces the disordered component of the B field, imposing a large-scale order on the field around its border. The field in the neutral gas lies along the ionisation front, while the field in the ionised gas tends to be perpendicular to this. The highest pressure compressed neutral/molecular gas is driven towards approximate equipartition between thermal/magnetic/turbulent energy densities, whereas lower pressure neutral/molecular gas divides into quiescent, magnetically dominated regions, and, on the other hand, turbulent, demagnetised regions. The ionised gas shows approximate thermal/turbulent equipartition, but with magnetic energy densities 1 to 3 orders of magnitude lower. A high velocity dispersion (approx 8 km/s) is maintained in the ionised gas throughout our simulations, despite the mean expansion velocity being significantly lower. The B field does not significantly brake the HII region expansion on the length and timescales accessible to our simulations, but it does tend to suppress the small-scale fragmentation and radiation-driven implosion of neutral/molecular gas that forms globules and pillars at the edge of the HII region. However, the relative luminosity of ionising and non-ionising radiation has a much larger influence than the presence or absence of the B field. When the radiation field is relatively soft (as in the case of a lower mass cluster, with earliest spectral type of B0.5), then fragmentation is less vigorous and a thick, relatively smooth PDR forms. We discuss the nature of the velocity dispersion vs. size relation for molecular clouds. In particular, we add to previous observational results showing that the velocity dispersions in molecular clouds and cores are not purely functions of spatial scale but involve surface gas densities as well. We emphasize that hydrodynamic turbulence is required to produce the first condensations in the progenitor medium. However, as the cloud is forming, it also becomes bound, and gravitational accelerations dominate the motions. Energy conservation in this case implies $|E_g| \sim E_k$, in agreement with observational data, and providing an interpretation for two recent observational results: the scatter in the $\delta v-R$ plane, and the dependence of the velocity dispersion on the surface density ${\delta v^2/ R} \propto \Sigma$. We argue that the observational data are consistent with molecular clouds in a state of hierarchical gravitational collapse, i.e., developing local centers of collapse throughout the whole cloud while the cloud itself is collapsing, and making equilibrium unnecessary at all stages prior to the formation of actual stars. Finally, we discuss how this mechanism need not be in conflict with the observed star formation rate.

We numerically investigate the effect of feedback from the ionizing radiation heating from massive stars on the evolution of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and their star formation efficiency (SFE). We find that the star-forming regions within the GMCs are invariably formed by gravitational contraction. After an initial period of contraction, the collapsing clouds begin forming stars, whose feedback evaporates part of the clouds' mass, opposing the continuing accretion from the infalling gas. The competition of accretion against dense gas consumption by star formation (SF) and evaporation by the feedback, regulates the clouds' mass and energy balance, as well as their SFE. We find that, in the presence of feedback, the clouds attain levels of the SFE that are consistent at all times with observational determinations for regions of comparable SF rates (SFRs). However, we observe that the dense gas mass is larger in general in the presence of feedback, while the total (dense gas + stars) is nearly insensitive to the presence of feedback, suggesting that the total mass is determined by the accretion, while the feedback inhibits mainly the conversion of dense gas to stars. The factor by which the SFE is reduced upon the inclusion of feedback is a decreasing function of the cloud's mass, for clouds of size ~ 10 pc. This naturally explains the larger observed SFEs of massive-star forming regions. We also find that the clouds may attain a pseudo-virialized state, with a value of the virial mass very similar to the actual cloud mass. We use numerical simulations to investigate how the expansion of an HII region is affected by an ambient magnetic field. First we consider the test problem of expansion in a uniform medium with a unidirectional magnetic field. We then describe the expansion of an HII region in a turbulent medium, taking as our initial conditions the results of and MHD turbulence simulation. We find that although in the uniform medium case the magnetic field does produce interesting effects over long length and timescales, in the turbulent medium case the main effect of the magnetic field is to reduce the efficiency of fragmentation of the molecular gas.

We present numerical simulations aimed at exploring the effects of varying the sub-grid physics parameters on the evolution and the properties of the galaxy formed in a low-mass dark matter halo (~7 × 1010 h –1 M ☉ at redshift z = 0). The simulations are run within a cosmological setting with a nominal resolution of 218 pc comoving and are stopped at z = 0.43. For simulations that cannot resolve individual molecular clouds, we propose the criterion that the threshold density for star formation, n SF, should be chosen such that the column density of the star-forming cells equals the threshold value for molecule formation, N ~ 1021 cm–2, or ~8 M ☉ pc–2. In all of our simulations, an extended old/intermediate-age stellar halo and a more compact younger stellar disk are formed, and in most cases, the halo's specific angular momentum is slightly larger than that of the galaxy, and sensitive to the SF/feedback parameters. We found that a non-negligible fraction of the halo stars are formed in situ in a spheroidal distribution. Changes in the sub-grid physics parameters affect significantly and in a complex way the evolution and properties of the galaxy: (1) lower threshold densities n SF produce larger stellar effective radii Re , less peaked circular velocity curves Vc (R), and greater amounts of low-density and hot gas in the disk mid-plane; (2) when stellar feedback is modeled by temporarily switching off radiative cooling in the star-forming regions, Re increases (by a factor of ~2 in our particular model), the circular velocity curve becomes flatter, and a complex multi-phase gaseous disk structure develops; (3) a more efficient local conversion of gas mass to stars, measured by a stellar particle mass distribution biased toward larger values, increases the strength of the feedback energy injection—driving outflows and inducing burstier SF histories; (4) if feedback is too strong, gas loss by galactic outflows—which are easier to produce in low-mass galaxies—interrupts SF, whose history becomes episodic; and (5) in all cases, the surface SF rate (SFR) versus the gas surface density correlation is steeper than the Kennicutt law but in agreement with observations in low surface brightness galaxies. The simulations exhibit two important shortcomings: the baryon fractions are higher, and the specific SFRs are much smaller, than observationally inferred values for redshifts ~0.4-1. These shortcomings pose a major challenge to the SF/feedback physics commonly applied in the ΛCDM-based galaxy formation simulations.

(Abridged) The gravitational term for clouds and cores entering in the virial theorem is usually assumed to be equal to the gravitational energy, since the contribution to the gravitational force from the mass distribution outside the volume of integration is assumed to be negligible. Such approximation may not be valid in the presence of an important external net potential. In the present work we analyze the effect of an external gravitational field on the gravitational budget of a density structure. Our cases under analysis are (a) a giant molecular cloud (GMC) with different aspect ratios embedded within a galactic net potential, and (b) a molecular cloud core embedded within the gravitational potential of its parent molecular cloud. We find that for roundish GMCs, the tidal tearing due to the shear in the plane of the galaxy is compensated by the tidal compression in the z direction. The influence of the external effective potential on the total gravitational budget of these clouds is relatively small, although not necessarily negligible. However, for more filamentary GMCs, the external effective potential can be dominant and can even overwhelm self-gravity, regardless of whether its main effect on the cloud is to disrupt it or compress it. This may explain the presence of some GMCs with few or no signs of massive star formation, such as the Taurus or the Maddalena's clouds. In the case of dense cores embedded in their parent molecular cloud, we found that the gravitational content due to the external field may be more important than the gravitational energy of the cores themselves. This effect works in the same direction as the gravitational energy, i.e., favoring the collapse of cores. We present measurements of the mean dense core lifetimes in numerical simulations of magnetically supercritical, turbulent, isothermal molecular clouds, in order to compare with observational determinations. "Prestellar" lifetimes (given as a function of the mean density within the cores, which in turn is determined by the density threshold n_thr used to define them) are consistent with observationally reported values, ranging from a few to several free-fall times. We also present estimates of the fraction of cores in the "prestellar", "stellar'', and "failed" (those cores that redisperse back into the environment) stages as a function of n_thr. The number ratios are measured indirectly in the simulations due to their resolution limitations. Our approach contains one free parameter, the lifetime of a protostellar object t_yso (Class 0 + Class I stages), which is outside the realm of the simulations. Assuming a value t_yso = 0.46 Myr, we obtain number ratios of starless to stellar cores ranging from 4-5 at n_thr = 1.5 x 10^4 cm^-3 to 1 at n_thr = 1.2 x 10^5 cm^-3, again in good agreement with observational determinations. We also find that the mass in the failed cores is comparable to that in stellar cores at n_thr = 1.5 x 10^4 cm^-3, but becomes negligible at n_thr = 1.2 x 10^5 cm^-3, in agreement with recent observational suggestions that at the latter densities the cores are in general gravitationally dominated. We conclude by noting that the timescale for core contraction and collapse is virtually the same in the subcritical, ambipolar diffusion-mediated model of star formation, in the model of star formation in turbulent supercritical clouds, and in a model intermediate between the previous two, for currently accepted values of the clouds' magnetic criticality., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, ApJ accepted. (Abridged) We present numerical hydrodynamical simulations of the formation, evolution and gravitational collapse of isothermal molecular cloud cores. A compressive wave is set up in a constant sub-Jeans density distribution of radius r = 1 pc. As the wave travels through the simulation grid, a shock-bounded spherical shell is formed. The inner shock of this shell reaches and bounces off the center, leaving behind a central core with an initially almost uniform density distribution, surrounded by an envelope consisting of the material in the shock-bounded shell, with a power-law density profile that at late times approaches a logarithmic slope of -2 even in non-collapsing cases. The resulting density structure resembles a quiescent core of radius < 0.1 pc, with a Bonnor-Ebert-like (BE-like) profile, although it has significant dynamical differences: it is initially non-self-gravitating and confined by the ram pressure of the infalling material, and consequently, growing continuously in mass and size. With the appropriate parameters, the core mass eventually reaches an effective Jeans mass, at which time the core begins to collapse. Thus, there is necessarily a time delay between the appearance of the core and the onset of its collapse, but this is not due to the dissipation of its internal turbulence as it is often believed. These results suggest that pre-stellar cores may approximate Bonnor-Ebert structures which are however of variable mass and may or may not experience gravitational collapse, in qualitative agreement with the large observed frequency of cores with BE-like profiles., Accepted for publication in ApJ. We study the formation of giant dense cloud complexes and of stars within them by means of SPH numerical simulations of the mildly supersonic collision of gas streams (``inflows'') in the warm neutral medium (WNM). The resulting compressions cause cooling and turbulence generation in the gas, forming a cloud that then becomes self-gravitating and undergoes global collapse. Simultaneously, the turbulent, nonlinear density fluctuations induce fast, local collapse events. The simulations show that: a) The clouds are not in a state of equilibrium. Instead, they undergo secular evolution. Initially, their mass and gravitational energy |Eg| increase steadily, while the turbulent energy Ek reaches a plateau. b) When |Eg| becomes comparable to Ek, global collapse begins, causing a simultaneous increase in both that maintains a near-equipartition condition |Eg| ~ 2 Ek. c) Longer inflow durations delay the onset of global and local collapse, by maintaining a higher turbulent velocity dispersion in the cloud over longer times. d) The star formation rate is large from the beginning, without any period of slow and accelerating star formation. e) The column densities of the local star-forming clumps are very similar to reported values of the column density required for molecule formation, suggesting that locally molecular gas and star formation occur nearly simultaneously. The MC formation mechanism discussed here naturally explains the apparent ``virialized'' state of MCs and the ubiquitous presence of HI halos around them. Within their assumptions, our simulations support the scenario of rapid star formation after MCs are formed, although long (>~ 15 Myr) accumulation periods do occur during which the clouds build up their gravitational energy, and which are expected to be spent in the atomic phase., matches version to be published. As we strive to understand how galaxies evolve it is crucial that we resolve physical processes and test emerging theories in nearby systems that we can observe in great detail. Our own Galaxy, the Milky Way, and the nearby Magellanic Clouds provide unique windows into the evolution of galaxies, each with its own metallicity and star formation rate. These laboratories allow us to study with more detail than anywhere else in the Universe how galaxies acquire fresh gas to fuel their continuing star formation, how they exchange gas with the surrounding intergalactic medium, and turn warm, diffuse gas into molecular clouds and ultimately stars. The $\lambda$21-cm line of atomic hydrogen (HI) is an excellent tracer of these physical processes. We combine previously published interferometric and single-dish data of relatively nearby massive dense cores that are actively forming stars to test whether their `fragmentation level' is controlled by turbulent or thermal support. We find no clear correlation between the fragmentation level and velocity dispersion, nor between the observed number of fragments and the number of fragments expected when the gravitationally unstable mass is calculated including various prescriptions for `turbulent support'. On the other hand, the best correlation is found for the case of pure thermal Jeans fragmentation, for which we infer a core formation efficiency around 13 per cent, consistent with previous works. We conclude that the dominant factor determining the fragmentation level of star-forming massive dense cores at 0.1 pc scale seems to be thermal Jeans fragmentation., Comment: accepted in MNRAS

We summarize recent numerical results on the control of the star formation efficiency (SFE), addressing the effects of turbulence and the magnetic field strength. In closed-box numerical simulations, the effect of the turbulent Mach number $\Ms$ depends on whether the turbulence is driven or decaying: In driven regimes, increasing $\Ms$ decreases the SFE, while in decaying regimes the converse is true. The efficiencies in non-magnetic cases for realistic Mach numbers $\Ms \sim 10$ are somewhat too high compared to observed values. Including the magnetic field can bring the SFE down to levels consistent with observations, but the intensity of the magnetic field necessary to accomplish this depends again on whether the turbulence is driven or decaying. In this kind of simulations, a lifetime of the molecular cloud (MC) needs to be assumed. Further progress requires determining the true nature of the turbulence driving and the lifetimes of the clouds. Simulations of MC formation by large-scale compressions in the warm neutral medium (WNM) show that the clouds' initial turbulence is produced by the accumulation process that forms them, and that the turbulence is driven for as long as this process lasts, producing realistic velocity dispersions and also thermal pressures in excess of the mean WNM value. In simulations including self-gravity, but neglecting the magnetic field and stellar energy feedback, the clouds never reach an equilibrium state, but rather evolve secularly, increasing their mass and gravitational energy until they engage in generalized gravitational collapse.
