Analysis of a range of crude oils and source rocks appears to indicate that primary and secondary oil migration has a strong impact on the distribution of pyrrolic nitrogen compounds in reservoired petroleum. The migration effects controlling the composition of pyrrolic nitrogen compounds recognized tentatively in this study include (a) the relative enrichments of alkyl carbazoles to alkylbenzocarbazoles, (b) nitrogen-shielded isomers to nitrogen-exposed isomers, and (c) higher homologues to the lower homologous species. A suite of molecular migration parameters based on chemical compositions of pyrrolic nitrogen compounds in crude oils have been proposed. If substantiated in more case history studies, these parameters are potentially useful in petroleum population mapping.

The system of handling aircraft fuels and/or missile propellants can be subject to failure. Such system failures could result in a fuel/propellant spill and subsequently result in the release of potentially explosive or toxic vapors into the atmosphere. The results of the Phase I effort included a review of Air Force experience in aircraft fuel spills and the development of models to predict the vapor generation and migration of fuel spilled or sprayed into the atmosphere. These models were then applied to typical sizes of spills and estimates made of the hazard region around the spill. The results of the effort include an identification of the important parameters which influence the mathematical modeling results and estimates of the hazard region. The projected hazard region is somewhat smaller than present regulations require.

Computations at the SCF and MCSCF levels have been made on the vertical excitation energies and some of the ground and excited state potential surfaces of the fifteen air triatomic molecules: water, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and their positive and negative ions. The results presented are preliminary for the most part. Their accuracy will be assessed in a later report in which correlation effects will be more extensively examined than that have been in the present report.

The Defense Land Fallout Interpretive Code (DELFIC) was used to determine the sensitivity of fallout predictions to input meteorological data. Weapon yields considered were 1 KT, 10 KT, 100 KT, and 1 MT. Burst locations were Washington, DC, and Seattle, Washington.
