Objetivou-se neste trabalho estudar o perfil soroepidemiológico de T. gondii em galinhas de criações de subsistência, galinhas de postura e frangos de corte na região metropolitana de Goiânia, Goiás e avaliar a correlação entre os dois testes sorológicos usados (MAD e HAI). Foram estudadas amostras de 450 aves, sendo 150 oriundas de cada tipo de criação, utilizando os testes de MAD e HAI. Das 150 aves de criação de subsistência em que se coletou amostra de sangue, 57 (38%) foram reagentes ao MAD. Das 150 amostras de galinhas de postura analisadas, 17 (11,3%) apresentaram anticorpos no exame sorológico. Dos 150 frangos de corte estudados, apenas sete (4,7%) foram reagentes ao teste de MAD. This paper aimed to analyze the relation between Big Data and competitive advantage using the resource-based view and the dynamic capabilities. Three international databases were used and analyzed 29 articles. Results indicated that both the resource-based view and the dynamic capabilities approach are used to analyze Big Data as competitive advantage creator. Two aspects were evidenced: the combined approaches can result in more consistent analyses; and the lack of a robust theoretical framework for Big Data analysis is evidenced by the predominance of descriptive articles and practical reports. Em ambientes de negócios altamente dinâmicos, a possibilidade de geração de informações impulsiona as empresas a utilizarem de forma eficiente um grande volume de dados, tanto em recursos quanto em capacidades. Este artigo teve como objetivo analisar a relação entre Big Data e vantagem competitiva utilizando a visão baseada em recursos e as capacidades dinâmicas. Três bases de dados internacionais foram utilizadas e analisados 29 artigos. Os resultados indicaram que tanto a visão baseada em recursos quanto a abordagem de recursos dinâmicos são usados para analisar Big Data como criador de vantagem competitiva. Dois aspectos foram evidenciados: as abordagens combinadas podem resultar em análises mais consistentes; e a falta de um referencial teórico robusto para a análise de Big Data é evidenciada pela predominância de artigos descritivos e relatórios práticos. The application of good handling practices among market traders who sell fish in the Amazon region is a critical situation, due to consumption regional habits and preference for food acquisition in street fair and traditional markets. This research aimed to evaluate the fresh shrimp (Macrobrachium amazonicum) selling conditions in different street fairs and markets of Belém using a checklist based on the Brazilian legislation that refers to whole fresh fish. Seven fairs and three markets were visited in the metropolitan area ofBelém, where sixty vendors of fresh regional shrimp were interviewed with the help of a questionnaire that included parameters of environmental conditions of the selling, general aspects of human resources of the handlers, equipment and utensils, sanitization, and finally, general aspects of exposure. In the observation made by this research, 100% of the establishments had non-conformities in at least one of the parameters analyzed, thus indicating the urgency of public policies aimed at training in good handling practices to this target public as a health promotion policy. The canning industry in Brazil has supply problems, since the extractive fishing sardine does not meet industry demand, causing the need to import fish from other countries. In this context, there is the proposal to use the matrinxã (Brycon amazonicus) as an alternative to sardines (Sardinella brasiliensis) for the canning of fish industry. This work aimed to evaluate the nutritional and sensory quality and matrinxã cans in vegetable oil. To evaluate the acceptance we used three canned fish samples with vegetable oil coverage, as follows: matrinxã, freshwater and saltwater sardine sardines. A preference test and an acceptance hedonic scale of nine points was applied. There was no significant difference in preference between the matrinxã and freshwater sardines, however, the matrinxã and saltwater sardines differ significantly, and canned matrinxã was the most preferred. For the color attribute, flavor and overall impression there was no significant difference between the three fish, as for the taste attribute, matrinxã presented higher acceptance significantly differing from saltwater sardines. In the chemical composition, the matrinxã showed a protein content of 28.67%, moisture 51.67%, 15.67% and total lipids 2.67% minerals. Therefore, it is concluded that the matrinxã is a good option for canned fish industry, as presented good nutritional quality and high acceptance compared to traditional canned fish. In this study, we evaluated genetic diversity, clustering analysis based on Jaccard’s coefficient and population structure in 33 genotypes of C. arabica and of three diploid Coffea species (C. canephora, C. eugenioides and C. racemosa) using 30 SSR markers. A total of 206 alleles were identified, with a mean of 6.9 over all loci. The set of SSR markers was able to discriminate all genotypes and revealed that Ethiopian accessions presented higher genetic diversity than commercial varieties. Population structure analysis indicated two genetic groups, one corresponding to Ethiopian accessions and another corresponding predominantly to commercial cultivars. Thirty-four private alleles were detected in the group of accessions collected from West side of Great Rift Valley. We observed a lower average genetic distance of the C. arabica genotypes in relation to C. eugenioides than C. canephora. Interestingly, commercial cultivars were genetically closer to C. eugenioides than C. canephora and C. racemosa. The great allelic richness observed in Ethiopian Arabica coffee, especially in Western group showed that these accessions can be potential source of new alleles to be explored by coffee breeding programs. This buffalo species can be infected by tick-borne hemoparasites and remains a carrier of these pathogens which represent a risk of infection for more susceptible species like cattle. Therefore, studies on the epidemiology of tick-borne hemoparasites in buffaloes are required. In this study, the prevalence of Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, and Anaplasma marginale were determined in water buffalo herds of western Cuba. To this aim, a cross-sectional study covering farms with large buffalo populations in the region was performed. Eight buffalo herds were randomly selected, and blood samples were collected from 328 animals, including 63 calves (3-14months), 75 young animals (3-5years), and 190 adult animals (>5years). Species-specific nested PCR and indirect ELISA assays were used to determine the molecular and serological prevalences of each hemoparasite, respectively. The molecular and serological prevalence was greater than 50% for the three hemoparasites. Differences were found in infection prevalence among buffalo herds, suggesting that local epidemiological factors may influence infection risk. Animals of all age groups were infected, with a higher molecular prevalence of B. bigemina and A. marginale in young buffalo and calves, respectively, while a stepwise increase in seroprevalence of B. bovis and B. bigemina from calves to adult buffaloes was found. The co-infection by the three pathogens was found in 12% of animals, and when analyzed by pair, the co-infections of B. bovis and B. bigemina, B. bigemina and A. marginale, and B. bovis and A. marginale were found in 20%, 24%, and 26%, respectively, underlying the positive interaction between these pathogens infecting buffaloes. These results provide evidence that tick-borne pathogen infections can be widespread among water buffalo populations in tropical livestock ecosystems. Further studies should evaluate whether these pathogens affect the health status and productive performance of water buffalo and infection risk of these pathogens in cattle cohabiting with buffalo. We determined total lipid content and cafestol and kahweol concentrations in green beans and genotyped 107 Coffea arabica accessions, including wild genotypes from the historical FAO collection from Ethiopia. A genome-wide association study was performed to identify genomic regions associated with lipid, cafestol and kahweol contents and cafestol/kahweol ratio. Using the diploid Coffea canephora genome as a reference, we identified 6,696 SNPs. Population structure analyses suggested the presence of two to three groups (K = 2 and K = 3) corresponding to the east and west sides of the Great Rift Valley and an additional group formed by wild accessions collected in western forests. We identified 5 SNPs associated with lipid content, 4 with cafestol, 3 with kahweol and 9 with cafestol/kahweol ratio. Most of these SNPs are located inside or near candidate genes related to metabolic pathways of these chemical compounds in coffee beans. In addition, three trait-associated SNPs showed evidence of directional selection among cultivated and wild coffee accessions. Our results also confirm a great allelic richness in wild accessions from Ethiopia, especially in accessions originating from forests in the west side of the Great Rift Valley. N2fixation was higher during the wet summer than during the dry winter both in acacia monocultures and in mixed plantations. Context: Introducing N-fixing trees in fast-growing tropical plantations may contribute to reducing the long-term requirements of N fertilizers. Management practices established in forest monocultures should be revisited in mixed-species plantations. Aims: This field experiment aimed to compare N2 fixation rates of Acacia mangium Wild in monospecific stands and in mixed-species stands with Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden. A secondary objective was to gain insight into the seasonal variations of N2 fixation. Methods: 15N was applied to acacia and eucalypt monocultures and mixed-species with a 1:1 ratio at mid rotation. Leaves were collected in autumn, winter, spring, and summer to determine the foliar N concentrations and 15N atom fraction. The N content in the above-ground biomass was estimated as well as the percentage of N derived from atmospheric N2 (%Ndfa) using eucalypts in monoculture as reference plants. Results: %Ndfa values averaged over the year were 14% in monoculture and 44% in mixed-species stands. While the stocking density of acacia trees was twice as high in monoculture as in mixture, the amounts of N fixed in above-ground biomass of acacia trees were close (35–39 kg N ha−1) at 39 months after planting. %Ndfa values were higher during the wet summer than the dry winter both in acacia monocultures and in mixed plantations. Conclusion: The stocking density of acacia trees can be reduced in mixed plantations with eucalypts in comparison to acacia monocultures with a low influence on the input of N to soil through biological fixation. Water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is a potential reservoir for Anaplasma marginale in livestock ecosystems of tropical countries. However, their participation in the epidemiological process of bovine anaplasmosis in endemic areas remains unclear. In the present study, the reservoir competence of water buffalo for A. marginale was explored by focusing on the analysis of rickettsemia levels in carrier animals, and the genetic characterization of A. marginale strains from cattle and buffalo. Eight groups of cattle and water buffaloes were randomly selected from cohabiting herds in four livestock ecosystems of Cuba, together with two control groups from unrelated cattle and buffalo herds. A total of 180 adult animals (88 water buffalo and 92 cattle) were sampled. Rickettsemia in carrier animals was determined by quantitative real-time PCR. The rickettsemia (parasitemia) levels in cattle were higher than in buffaloes, however the rickettsemia in buffalo may be enough to infect R. microplus ticks. The genetic diversity of A. marginale was assessed by strain characterization and phylogenetic analysis of 27 msp1α gene sequences. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2016-10-03 Background: In February 2016, a new fungal disease was spotted in wheat fields across eight districts in Bangladesh. The epidemic spread to an estimated 15,000 hectares, about 16% of the cultivated wheat area in Bangladesh, with yield losses reaching up to 100%. Within weeks of the onset of the epidemic, we performed transcriptome sequencing of symptomatic leaf samples collected directly from Bangladeshi fields. Results: Reinoculation of seedlings with strains isolated from infected wheat grains showed wheat blast symptoms on leaves of wheat but not rice. Our phylogenomic and population genomic analyses revealed that the wheat blast outbreak in Bangladesh was most likely caused by a wheat-infecting South American lineage of the blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that genomic surveillance can be rapidly applied to monitor plant disease outbreaks and provide valuable information regarding the identity and origin of the infectious agent. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2016-04-28 The seasonal climate drivers of the carbon cycle in tropical forests remain poorly known, although these forests account for more carbon assimilation and storage than any other terrestrial ecosystem. Based on a unique combination of seasonal pan-tropical data sets from 89 experimental sites (68 include aboveground wood productivity measurements and 35 litter productivity measurements), their associated canopy photosynthetic capacity (enhanced vegetation index, EVI) and climate, we ask how carbon assimilation and aboveground allocation are related to climate seasonality in tropical forests and how they interact in the seasonal carbon cycle. We found that canopy photosynthetic capacity seasonality responds positively to precipitation when rainfall is < 2000ĝ€-mmĝ€-yrĝ'1 (water-limited forests) and to radiation otherwise (light-limited forests). On the other hand, independent of climate limitations, wood productivity and litterfall are driven by seasonal variation in precipitation and evapotranspiration, respectively. Consequently, light-limited forests present an asynchronism between canopy photosynthetic capacity and wood productivity. First-order control by precipitation likely indicates a decrease in tropical forest productivity in a drier climate in water-limited forest, and in current light-limited forest with future rainfall < 2000ĝ€-mmĝ€-yrĝ'1. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2015-08-11 Potassium (K) is an important limiting factor of tree growth, but little is known of the effects of K supply on the long-distance transport of photosynthetic carbon (C) in the phloem and of the interaction between K fertilization and drought. We pulse-labelled 2-year-old Eucalyptus grandis L. trees grown in a field trial combining K fertilization (+K and -K) and throughfall exclusion (+W and -W), and we estimated the velocity of C transfer by comparing time lags between the uptake of 13CO2 and its recovery in trunk CO2 efflux recorded at different heights. We also analysed the dynamics of the labelled photosynthates recovered in the foliage and in the phloem sap (inner bark extract). The mean residence time of labelled C in the foliage was short (21-31 h). The time series of 13C in excess in the foliage was affected by the level of fertilization, whereas the effect of throughfall exclusion was not significant. The velocity of C transfer in the trunk (0.20-0.82mh-1) was twice as high in +K trees than in -K trees, with no significant effect of throughfall exclusion except for one +K-W tree labelled in the middle of the drought season that was exposed to a more pronounced water stress (midday leaf water potential of -2.2MPa). Our results suggest that besides reductions in photosynthetic C supply and in C demand by sink organs, the lower velocity under K deficiency is due to a lower cross-sectional area of the sieve tubes, whereas an increase in phloem sap viscosity is more likely limiting phloem transport under drought. In all treatments, 10 times less 13C was recovered in inner bark extracts at the bottom of the trunk when compared with the base of the crown, suggesting that a large part of the labelled assimilates has been exported out of the phloem and replaced by unlabelled C. This supports the 'leakage-retrieval mechanism' that may play a role in maintaining the pressure gradient between source and sink organs required to sustain high velocity of phloem transport in tall trees. This research is related to the performance evaluation of twelve Coffea arabica cultivars in Vale do Ribeira Paulista, in order to generate consistent information for the technical recommendation for cultivation in the region. The experiment was set in February 2018, at the Experimental Campus of the São Paulo State University “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” - UNESP in Registro, SP, Brazil, in a spacing of 3.00x0.60 m, in a randomized block design with three replications. The following parameters were evaluated: stem diameter, number of plagiotropic branches, plant height, number of internodes of plagiotropic branches, length of the first plagiotropic branch, incidence of brown spots and phoma leaf spot, infestation by leaf miner and yield. The results showed a good adaptation of all cultivars to growing conditions in Vale do Ribeira Paulista, with higher and faster vegetative development of large coffee cultivars. The productive potential of cultivars in the first harvest was similar to the performance of the same cultivars in traditional growing regions, with emphasis on ‘Arara’ and ‘Catucaí Amarelo 24/137’, with about 55 bags ha-1 of processed coffee. There was no incidence of rust disease in the experimental evaluation period, unlike other biotic agents such as leaf miner, phoma-spot and brown eye spot. Nossa pesquisa se relaciona à avaliação do desempenho de doze cultivares de Coffea arabica no Vale do Ribeira Paulista, gerando informações consistentes para a recomendação técnica de cultivo na região. O experimento foi instalado em fevereiro de 2018, no Câmpus Experimental da Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho”, em Registro, SP, Brasil, em espaçamento de 3,00x0,60m, delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, três repetições e parcelas de oito plantas, sendo considerada como parcela útil apenas as seis plantas centrais. Foram avaliados o diâmetro de caule, o número de ramos plagiotrópicos, a altura das plantas, o número de internódios dos ramos plagiotrópico, o comprimento do primeiro ramo plagiotrópico, a incidência de cercosporiose e mancha-de-phoma em folhas dos cafeeiros, a infestação por bicho-mineiro e, estimada a produtividade das cultivares. Nossos resultados evidenciaram uma boa adaptação de todas as cultivares às condições de cultivo no Vale do Ribeira Paulista, com maior e mais rápido desenvolvimento vegetativo das cultivares de porte alto. O potencial produtivo das cultivares na primeira colheita revelou-se semelhante ao desempenho das mesmas cultivares em regiões tradicionais de cultivo, com destaque para as cultivares Arara e Catucaí Amarelo 24/137, com cerca de 55 sacas.ha-1 de café beneficiado. Não houve incidência de ferrugem no período de avaliação experimental, ao contrário de outros agentes bióticos como, bicho-mineiro, mancha-de-phoma e cercosporiose.

We investigated an alternative mechanochemical method to treat asbestos-cement materials by loading them with potassium and phosphorus from KH2PO4 during the milling process to obtain a product used as liming and soil conditioner. The results showed total asbestos fibrous elimination after 7 to 8 h of milling. The materials showed a slow-release fertilizer profile. The liming property is maintained when the asbestos-cement weight proportion used is equal to or higher than KH2PO4. A comparative soil experiment with limestone also indicates that lower doses of the K- and P-enriched detoxified asbestos cement were required to reach similar liming effects. Maize cultivation (greenhouse) was used to evaluate its performance showing higher biomass production for the sample loaded with potassium and phosphorous. Plant extracts from soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) were investigated on soybean plants grown after inoculation with these extracts. Soil samples were collected from two important Brazilian soybean-growing regions to produce the extracts used in the experiments. The extracts were produced with material collected from aboveground biomass and rhizosphere of soybean plants cultivated in a controlled greenhouse (phase 1). The extracts produced in phase 1 were applied in a sequential experiment (phase 2). Phase 2 was conducted to examine the plant microbiome after the microbial alteration process in the greenhouse through seed inoculation with the extracts produced previously. Samples of aboveground biomass were collected to determine root dry matter and crop yield. Bacterial 16S rRNA sequences were processed to determine the final microbial content of soybean. The inoculated treatments had lower species diversity; however, the phyla Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were more abundant in the treatments than in the non-inoculated treatment. The soybean plant stem in the inoculated treatment also had a positive response to enrichment of the bacterial classes Betaproteobacteria, Bacilli and Flavobacteria. Inoculation affected the microbial composition of soybean plants. The alteration of microbiome changes revealed differences for crop yield between the inoculated and non-inoculated treatments, with up to 93.5 % higher crop yields per plant according to the extract applied. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 Non-biodegradable petroleum-based plastics are still widely used by the food industry for packaging applications and, due to that bio-based raw materials such as starch, have been attracting growing interest from the packaging industries as a biocompatible alternative material. During the industrial processing of potato, a large amount of residual starch is produced from the washing of the raw material. Starch-like biopolymers have been proposed for the formulation of biodegradable materials. The application of starch in the packaging production depends on chemical, physical and functional properties to form gels and films. The aim of this study was to develop packaging films made from potato processing residual starch combined with polar organic solvents (glycerol and acetic acid) that can be fully obtained from renewable sources. The characterization of the material obtained was performed evaluating the microbiological stability, mechanical properties, formed bonds and barrier characteristics and, in order to demonstrate the real application in fruits preservation the material was direct applied into papaya fruits (Carica papaya) by the immersion method. The present study exhibits the potential of starch residual from potato industrialization to manufacture packaging films. The films achieved the expected results for microbiological analysis, water vapor permeability and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. The qualitative analysis of the shelf stability test showed the potential of the films in fruit preservation envisioning the application in food industry for packaging. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic absorption spectroscopy were employed for the film characterization. For the postharvest experiments, unwrapped fruits were compared to individually wrapped ones in both conventional polyvinyl chloride film and polyvinyl chloride film containing silver and stored under two conditions (10 days at 15°C, and 2 days at 22°C to simulate market conditions). The physicochemical analyzes, including soluble solids, titratable acidity, ratio, pH, ascorbic acid, weight loss, firmness and color were performed every two days of storage, while microbiological analyzes were performed on the 1st and 10th day of storage. Sensory analysis was carried on the last day of storage. Physicochemical analyses showed that fruits wrapped with polyvinyl chloride films presented a lower weight loss compared to than unwrapped fruits. These results were in accordance with sensory analysis. More importantly, papaya wrapped with polyvinyl chloride film containing silver kept papaya peel green for longer time causing a delay in ripening, indicating its potential to extend postharvest shelf-life of papaya and reduce postharvest losses. Ewes received intravaginal sponges soaked with 60 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP), which were kept in place for six (G6; n = 12), nine (G9; n = 12), or 12 (G12; n = 12) days. Half of the ewes in each group remained estrus synchronized only ((SYNCH)) and the other half was superovulated ((SOV)) with 133 mg porcine follicle-stimulating hormone (pFSH). There were no differences (p > 0.05) in antral follicle counts determined with ultrasonography 60 hours before MAP sponge removal (or at the time of the first pFSH dose) among G6 (6.4 +/- 0.9), G9 (6.2 +/- 0.7), and G12 (5.5 +/- 0.6). Estrus responses and NSER success rates did not vary (p > 0.05) among the three progestin-treatment groups of ewes for either estrus-induced or superovulated animals. The onset of estrus occurred 10-12 hours later (p < 0.01) in G9(SYNCH) ewes compared with G6(SYNCH) and G12(SYNCH,) and the duration of estrus was similar to 19 hours greater (p < 0.01) in G9(SOV) than in G6(SOV). The average duration of the NSER procedure was 32.6 +/- 1.3 minutes. At least one structure was recovered in 85.7% of synchronized and in 87.5% of superovulated ewes. Viable embryo recovery rates were also similar (p > 0.05) for G6 (1.0 +/- 0.3 and 2.5 +/- 1.5), G9 (1.3 +/- 0.5 and 4.8 +/- 2.0), and G12 groups (1.0 +/- 0.3 and 4.8 +/- 2.3; estrus-synchronized and superovulated ewes, respectively). In conclusion, progestogen pretreatment of different durations and NSER can be employed in Morada Nova ewes, resulting in reasonable viable embryo recovery rates in both estrus-synchronized and superovulated animals. Four species were collected: Pseudischnaspis bowreyi (Cockerell), Aulacaspis tubercularis Newstead (Diaspididae) and Ceroplastes floridensis Comstock (Coccidae) on fruits and leaves and Ceroplastes stellifer (Westwood) on leaves. Pseudischnaspis bowreyi is associated for the first time with mango trees in Brazil. Ceroplastes floridensis and P. bowreyi are reported for the first time in the states of Bahia and Pernambuco and C. stellifer in the state of Bahia. All scale insects obtained in this study caused injuries that led to control methods adopted by the growers to reduce their populations, but only A. tubercularis was already reported in the region. Background: We hypothesized that a diet with old man saltbush hay used as an alternative source of nutrients could partially replace the concentrate in the feeding of feedlot lambs. Objective: This study evaluated the behavior and performance of lambs fed diets containing increasing levels of old man saltbush hay plus concentrate. Methods: Twenty-four castrated Santa Inês lambs at approximately eight months of age (22 ± 1.97 kg) were confined in a randomized complete design and fed diets containing 30, 40, 50, and 60% (dry matter: DM) of old man saltbush hay. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2022-01-01 Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária Phenotyping is the major bottleneck in the effort to develop varieties of rice (Oryza sativa L.) suitable for growing under a water-saving irrigation management, such as alternate wetting and drying irrigation techniques (AWD). To analyze if the genotypic variability for carbon isotope discrimination (CID) in rice leaves could be used as a relatively high-throughput tracer to early select superior genotypes highlighting improved root architecture traits when submitted to AWD, a set of twenty varieties grown under semi-natural conditions were submitted to two water irrigation regimes, continuous flooding (CF) and AWD cycles. Coefficients of genetic variance (π2g) obtained for root architecture, micro-morphological and physiological traits were significant for all of them regardless of the adopted irrigation system, except to mean root diameter. The three significant principal components (PCs) with eigenvalue > 1, explain most of the total variation across cycles and water regimes. For most of analyzed traits, the values of heritability coefficients were higher regardless of adopted irrigation management and trait category; for CID, the magnitudes of broad heritability at an individual level (greater than 0.80) were similar in the two irrigation techniques, evidencing that the success of the selection is independent of irrigation management. The higher CID values after three AWD cycles are associated with varieties with higher total root length and volume. To our knowledge, this is the first study demonstrating the potential application of CID as a tracer to select root architecture traits in rice when water-saving irrigation management is of concern. In the last decades, capital-concentrating activities such as agribusiness, mining, and hydropower promoted extensive changes in land cover, hydrology, and environmental conditions. These changes are jeopardizing the basin’s biodiversity and ecosystem services. Threats are escalating as poor environmental policies continue to be formulated, such as environmentally unsustainable hydropower plants, large-scale agriculture for commodity production, and aquaculture with non-native fish. If the current model persists, it will deepen the environmental crisis in the basin, compromising broad conservation goals and social development in the long term. Better policies will require thought and planning to minimize growing threats and ensure the basin’s sustainability for future generations. In the Brazilian Cerrado, soybean is the main grain crop, and strategies that improve the cultivation of cover crops in the off-season in succession to soybean could facilitate NT for large cultivated areas. In the municipality of Nova Xavantina, MT, Brazil, three experiments were carried out in a randomized block design with four replications. This work aimed to evaluate the establishment of Urochloa ruziziensis (ruzigrass) in succession to soybean as a function of ruzigrass seed treatment, sowing density and phenological stage, and soybean cultivar allelopathic potential. In the first experiment, treatment of ruzigrass seeds with six doses (0, 150, 300, 450, 600 and 750 mL of commercial product 100 kg−1 of seeds) of fipronil + thiophanate-methyl + pyraclostrobin was evaluated. In the second experiment, two ruzigrass interseeding periods (soybean phenological stages R5.5 and R7) and five ruzigrass seed densities (4.3, 6.4, 8.6, 10.7 and 12.9 kg ha−1 VPS) were tested. In the third experiment, the interference of soybean cultivars in the establishment of ruzigrass and the potential allelopathic effect of the cultivars on forage germination were evaluated, six soybean cultivars RR (Roundup Ready®) were used: P98Y70; TMG 115; TMG 132; M 8527; P98Y11; TMG 123. Our results showed that seed treatment facilitated forage establishment in the interseeding system, and the use of high sowing rates at phenological stage R5.5 of soybean promoted greater ruzigrass plant development. The effects of the soybean cultivars on ruzigrass germination varied, suggesting allelopathic effects of the deposition of petioles and soybean leaves on ruzigrass seeds. Thus, an appropriate interseeding strategy can improve forage production in the off-season and favor NT through correct management of forage establishment in succession to soybean. In phytopathogenic bacteria, elicitors are constituent components of cellular structures, such as flagellin. We sought to select structural components of Xanthomonas spp. incompatible with tomato, aiming to control bacterial spot (Xanthomonas perforans). Initially, cell suspensions from 11 Xanthomonas spp. isolates were infiltrated into the leaves to assess their ability to cause a hypersensitivity response (HR) and the incompatible ones had their flagellin purified. The flagellin of the isolates were first applied at different concentrations, via infiltration and spraying. The pathogen, X. perforans, was inoculated after 24 h, to assess whether there would be any harmful reaction. No harmful reaction was observed in any treatment. Then, a second experiment was conducted to assess the severity of all isolates, at a concentration of 8.35 μg · ml–1, via spraying, infiltration, and soil. The greatest reduction in Area Under the Disease Progress Curve (AUDPC) was observed in the treatment with XapRR, applied via spraying. Thus, prospecting for elicitors is the first step in developing a product for agricultural use. The flagellin elicitor of XapRR is promising and capable of producing these molecules on a large scale. International audience; Aim: Macroinvertebrates comprise a highly diverse set of taxa with great potential as indicators of soil quality. Communities were sampled at 3,694 sites distributed world-wide. We aimed to analyse the patterns of abundance, composition and network characteristics and their relationships to latitude, mean annual temperature and rainfall, land cover, soil texture and agricultural practices. Location: Sites are distributed in 41 countries, ranging from 55 degrees S to 57 degrees N latitude, from 0 to 4,000 m in elevation, with annual rainfall ranging from 500 to >3,000 mm and mean temperatures of 5-32 degrees C. Time period: 1980-2018. Major taxa studied: All soil macroinvertebrates: Haplotaxida; Coleoptera; Formicidae; Arachnida; Chilopoda; Diplopoda; Diptera; Isoptera; Isopoda; Homoptera; Hemiptera; Gastropoda; Blattaria; Orthoptera; Lepidoptera; Dermaptera; and "others". Methods: Standard ISO 23611-5 sampling protocol was applied at all sites. Data treatment used a set of multivariate analyses, principal components analysis (PCA) on macrofauna data transformed by Hellinger's method, multiple correspondence analysis for environmental data (latitude, elevation, temperature and average annual rainfall, type of vegetation cover) transformed into discrete classes, coinertia analysis to compare these two data sets, and bias-corrected and accelerated bootstrap tests to evaluate the part of the variance of the macrofauna data attributable to each of the environmental factors. Network analysis was performed. Each pairwise association of taxonomic units was tested against a null model considering local and regional scales, in order to avoid spurious correlations. Results: Communities were separated into five clusters reflecting their densities and taxonomic richness. They were significantly influenced by climatic conditions, soil texture and vegetation cover. Abundance and diversity, highest in tropical forests (1,895 +/- 234 individuals/m(2)) and savannahs (1,796 +/- 72 individuals/m(2)), progressively decreased in tropical cropping systems (tree-associated crops, 1,358 +/- 120 individuals/m(2); pastures, 1,178 +/- 154 individuals/m(2); and annual crops, 867 +/- 62 individuals/m(2)), temperate grasslands (529 +/- 60 individuals/m(2)), forests (232 +/- 20 individuals/m(2)) and annual crops (231 +/- 24 individuals/m(2)) and temperate dry forests and shrubs (195 +/- 11 individuals/m(2)). O estudo teve o objetivo de definir e estabelecer regras mínimas para a catalogação de datasets ômicos, oriundos do Laboratório Multiusuário de Bioinformática da Embrapa (LMB), no Repositório de Dados de Pesquisa da Embrapa (Redape). Foram adotados os seguintes procedimentos metodológicos: i) revisão bibliográfica; ii) construção do estado do conhecimento sobre catalogação; iii) identificação de regras mínimas para descrição de datasets; iv) exploração dos elementos metadados do software Dataverse; v) identificação de atributos para descrever elementos metadados; vi) estabelecimento de regras para orientar a descrição de elementos, campos e subcampos dos esquemas Metadados de Citação e Metadados Ciência da Vida. Como resultados foram definidas e estabelecidas: i) regras mínimas de catalogação e descrição de metadados, contemplando aspectos da representação descritiva e temática; ii) instruções para o preenchimento do formulário de catalogação no Redape, uma instância do software Dataverse; iii) orientações para o uso de vocabulários controlados FAIR; iv) recomendações para revisão na catalogação de datasets. O artigo relata a experiência de catalogação de datasets ômicos no Redape, descrevendo as orientações estabelecidas para a geração de metadados qualificados, descritos de acordo com padrões internacionais de representação descritiva, e em aderência aos princípios FAIR. The effects of the dry aging process, in terms of chamber temperature and aging time, have not been described previously for Bos indicus meat. Aims This study evaluated the effects of aging conditions (method, temperature, time) on the microbiological, physicochemical, volatile compound profile and weight loss characteristics of dry-aged and wet-aged beef from Nellore cattle (Bos indicus). Methods Beef loins (n = 16) were cut into eight portions and assigned to treatments in a complete block design combining aging method (dry or wet), temperature (2 degrees C or 7 degrees C) and time (21 or 42 days). Key results Samples dry-aged at 7 degrees C had higher (P < 0.05) weight loss than samples dry-aged at 2 degrees C. Although storage temperature did not affect (P > 0.05) the yield of wet-aged samples, Enterobacteriaceae counts increased (P < 0.05) in the samples stored at 7 degrees C compared with 2 degrees C. Aging for 42 days resulted in greater (P < 0.05) process losses (drip + evaporation + trimming) for both aging methods than aging for 21 days. The pH, moisture content and Warner-Bratzler shear force values were not affected (P > 0.05) by aging method, temperature or time. Qualitative analysis indicated that volatile compounds were affected by aging method and time, but not by aging temperature. Conclusions The results indicate that higher temperature and longer aging periods cannot be not recommended for either dry or wet aging, owing to the increase in process losses of dry-aged samples, and growth of Enterobacteriaceae and psychrotrophic bacteria in wet-aged samples. Implications This study highlights the importance of controlling conditions for dry aging to produce a safe product and obtain higher yields. Processing plants or retailers that produce dry-aged or wet-aged meat could use these results to adjust their production systems. The Vale do Ribeira region is among the largest banana producing areas in Brazil, but little is known of the earthworms living there. Hence, the present study assessed earthworm populations and species in three banana plantations and adjacent Atlantic forest fragments along the Ribeira de Iguape River using standard (hand sorting) methodologies. Furthermore, we review earthworm populations reported in banana/plantain plantations worldwide. Only two species (Pontoscolex corethrurus, Amynthas gracilis) belonging to two families (Rhinodrilidae, Megascolecidae) were found in the Ribeira River valley, occurring concurrently. Abundance was low (< 13 indiv. m(-2)) compared with other banana plantations worldwide, that frequently surpassed 100 indiv. m(-2). More than 70 studies reported earthworms from >200 banana plantations in 28 countries, and mean species richness was 2.7 per site, ranging from 1 to 10 species. Exotics predominated in most sites and P. corethrurus was the most prevalent species encountered. Overall, more than 104 species from 10 families were reported, with around 61 native and 43 exotic widespread species, mainly of the Megascolecidae, Lumbricidae and Acanthodrilidae families. Richness was highest in India (27 spp.) and the Canary Islands (25 spp.), but native species dominated only in a few countries and sites, while exotics were prevalent especially in island countries and Brazil. Lower-input practices appear to be important for earthworm communities and banana plantations can have large earthworm populations in some cases, which may be contributing to soil processes and plant production, topics that deserve further attention. However, many important banana-producing countries have not yet been evaluated, so further work is warranted, both in terms of applied ecology and biodiversity. Due to its significance in environmental reforestation, as well as the continued exploitation of its wood, it is necessary to develop management programs that support the conservation of the species. Simple sequence repeats (SSR) or microsatellite markers are widely used in population genetic studies across a range of diverse organisms. In this study, we present the first SSR markers developed for A. fraxinifolium as well as their frequency and distribution based on transcriptome data. From transcriptome data, we identified more than 100 thousand sequences presenting microsatellites, with a predominant distribution of trinucleotide repeats. From the initial screening, we selected 20 microsatellite loci which were validated and evaluated for genetic indices in two natural populations. All loci were polymorphic, ranging from four to 11 alleles per locus. The observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0 to 1.0 and from 0.533 to 1.0, respectively, while the genetic differentiation (GST = 0.363) was greater within than between populations. The developed SSR loci from RNA-Seq data provides a foundation for future studies on genetic diversity and population structure, mating system, and gene flow for A. fraxinifolium populations and related species, aiming at conservation and management.
