Rabies is a lethal viral disease and dogs are the major disease reservoir in the Philippines. Spatio-temporal variations in environmental factors are known to affect disease dynamics. Some rabies-affected countries considered investigating the role of weather components in driving rabies cases and it has helped them to strategize their control efforts. In this study, cointegration analysis was conducted between the monthly reported rabies cases and the weather components, such as temperature and precipitation, to verify the effect of weather components on rabies incidence in Davao City, Philippines. With the Engle-Granger cointegration tests, we found that rabies cases are cointegrated into each of the weather components. It was further validated, using the Granger causality test, that each weather component predicts the rabies cases and not vice versa. Moreover, we performed the Johansen cointegration test to show that the weather components simultaneously affect the number of rabies cases, which allowed us to estimate a vector-error correction model for rabies incidence as a function of temperature and precipitation. Our analyses showed that canine rabies in Davao City was weather-sensitive, which implies that rabies incidence could be projected using established long-run relationship among reported rabies cases, temperature, and precipitation. This study also provides empirical evidence that can guide local health officials in formulating preventive strategies for rabies control and eradication based on weather patterns.

Despite the control programs of the City Veterinarian's Office (CVO), rabies is still geographically widespread across Davao City. Hence, a modified SEIV model incorporating different control strategies and adding population compartments focusing on reported rabies cases was formulated to understand dog rabies transmission dynamics. The model was fitted to the datasets of CVO from 2006--2020, such as the cumulative monthly positive rabies cases and the number of examined positive rabies samples in Talomo, Buhangin, and Poblacion districts. Results showed that the Talomo district had the highest rabies transmission rate but the lowest castration rate. On the other hand, the Poblacion district had the highest impounding rate and castration rate but the lowest birth and vaccination rate. Finally, the Buhangin district had the highest birth rate and vaccination rate but the lowest impounding rate and transmission rate. Sensitivity analysis (SA) was performed on over 10,000 samples of parameter space by the LHS method to obtain PRCC values. Results of the SA revealed that dog vaccination had a significantly strong influence among many interventions in mitigating rabies transmission -- consistently in Talomo, Poblacion, and Buhangin districts. The results obtained in this study support the CVO's ongoing mass canine rabies vaccination campaign in the city as a method of rabies control. Despite this, dog population control strategies (i.e. castration and impounding) must still be implemented in addition to intensifying vaccination strategy, as the birth rate also strongly contributes to increasing rabies transmission. Through the model and data fitting approaches, this study has provided information on the level of control measures implemented in three districts and can also be utilized to develop future rabies epidemiological models in Davao City and other locations. Davao City, the largest city in the Philippines with 11 legislative districts, is among the top cities with high rabies incidence. To eliminate the rabies incidence, the City Veterinarian's Office (CVO) has been implementing the Intensified Rabies Control Program (IRCP) that is composed of mass dog vaccination, dog neutering, dog impounding, and information and education campaigns (IEC). In this paper, we formulated a linear programming (LP) model that minimizes the IRCP operational cost while satisfying the different targets set by the CVO for each of the IRCP component as well as its allocated budget. From the analysis, the CVO should be lessening the number of dogs to be vaccinated in districts whose vaccine coverage is already above 70%. This is to ensure that the number of dogs to be vaccinated in other districts can be increased and achieve 70% vaccine coverage. However, the model suggests that it is optimal that 90% of the dogs in the Talomo district (the most populous district in the city) should be vaccinated. Furthermore, with the 24:1 ratio of the number of vaccinated dogs to the impounded dogs, it is optimal to neuter one dog for every 239 vaccinated dogs. Additionally, the model suggests impounding more dogs to highly populated districts. Lastly, the model suggests maintaining the average number of IEC participants. By doing these interventions firmly, dogs in Davao City can potentially achieve herd immunity, and the human's risk to contract rabies will be lowered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Muller F element (4.2 Mb, ~80 protein-coding genes) is an unusual autosome of Drosophila melanogaster; it is mostly heterochromatic with a low recombination rate. To investigate how these properties impact the evolution of repeats and genes, we manually improved the sequence and annotated the genes on the D. erecta, D. mojavensis, and D. grimshawi F elements and euchromatic domains from the Muller D element. We find that F elements have greater transposon density (25–50%) than euchromatic reference regions (3–11%). Among the F elements, D. grimshawi has the lowest transposon density (particularly DINE-1: 2% vs. 11–27%). F element genes have larger coding spans, more coding exons, larger introns, and lower codon bias. Comparison of the Effective Number of Codons with the Codon Adaptation Index shows that, in contrast to the other species, codon bias in D. grimshawi F element genes can be attributed primarily to selection instead of mutational biases, suggesting that density and types of transposons affect the degree of local heterochromatin formation. F element genes have lower estimated DNA melting temperatures than D element genes, potentially facilitating transcription through heterochromatin. Most F element genes (~90%) have remained on that element, but the F element has smaller syntenic blocks than genome averages (3.4–3.6 vs. 8.4–8.8 genes per block), indicating greater rates of inversion despite lower rates of recombination. Overall, the F element has maintained characteristics that are distinct from other autosomes in the Drosophila lineage, illuminating the constraints imposed by a heterochromatic milieu.

Rabies remains a public health concern in the Philippines despite the national campaign against this viral disease. For instance, in Davao City – the largest city in the Philippines – rabies is endemic despite the implementation of Intensified Rabies Control Program (IRCP), which is comprised of mass dog vaccination, dog castration, dog impounding, and information campaigns. In this study, we report the trends of rabies in Davao City from 2006–2017, analyze the monthly pattern of rabies incidence in the city before and after the implementation of IRCP, assess the impact of IRCP using count regression models, and provide recommendations for the strategic implementation of the programs. Our result suggests that dog impounding, precipitation, and the presence of responsibly owned dogs are significantly associated with decreasing number of reported rabies cases. Thus, we recommend that, during summer seasons, the city’s impounding efforts must be intensified. Since dog impounding is resource-demanding and may cause instability in the dog population, we suggest that the city should push for the 70% minimum vaccination coverage. Finally, implementation of other interventions such as castration and information, education, and communication (IEC) sessions must be carefully assessed as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Digital RF solutions have been shown to be advantageous in various design aspects, such as accurate modeling, design reuse, and scaling when migrating to the next CMOS process node. Consequently, the majority of new low-cost and feature cell phones are now based on this approach. However, another equally important aspect of this approach to wireless transceiver SoC design, which is instrumental in allowing fast and low-cost productization, is in creating the inherent capability to assess performance and allow for low-cost built-in calibration and compensation, as well as characterization and final-testing. These internal capabilities can often rely solely on the SoCs existing processing resources, representing a zero cost adder, requiring only the development of the appropriate algorithms. This paper presents various examples of built-in measurements that have been demonstrated in wireless transceivers offered by Texas Instruments in recent years, based on the digital-RF processor (DRPTM) technology, and highlights the importance of the various types presented; built-in self-calibration and compensation, built-in self-characterization, and built-in self-testing (BiST). - Abstract
The Muller F element (4.2 Mb, ~80 protein-coding genes) is an unusual autosome of Drosophila melanogaster; it is mostly heterochromatic with a low recombination rate. To investigate how these properties impact the evolution of repeats and genes, we manually improved the sequence and annotated the genes on the D. erecta, D. mojavensis, and D. grimshawi F elements and euchromatic domains from the Muller D element. We find that F elements have greater transposon density (25-50%) than euchromatic reference regions (3-11%). Among the F elements, D. grimshawi has the lowest transposon density (particularly DINE-1: 2% vs. 11-27%). F element genes have larger coding spans, more coding exons, larger introns, and lower codon bias. Comparison of the Effective Number of Codons with the Codon Adaptation Index shows that, in contrast to the other species, codon bias in D. grimshawi F element genes can be attributed primarily to selection instead of mutational biases, suggesting that density and types of transposons affect the degree of local heterochromatin formation. F element genes have lower estimated DNA melting temperatures than D element genes, potentially facilitating transcription through heterochromatin. Most F element genes (~90%) have remained on that element, but the F element has smaller syntenic blocks than genome averages (3.4-3.6 vs. 8.4-8.8 genes per block), indicating greater rates of inversion despite lower rates of recombination. Overall, the F element has maintained characteristics that are distinct from other autosomes in the Drosophila lineage, illuminating the constraints imposed by a heterochromatic milieu., (Copyright © 2015 Leung et al.)
