Although much is known about recidivism risk, less is known about factors predicting early release. The current study analyses a sample of 2,070 adult felony probation clients to see if offense characteristics, domains from the Texas Risk Assessment System (TRAS), and demographic variables impact both revocation and successful early release. Results revealed that predictors of early release mirrored those of revocation with one exception—race. Specifically, Black clients were 27% less likely to be granted early release. The findings highlight the TRAS is an effective tool to help mitigate bias for revocation of probation but not for granting early release. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive issue that is underreported to law enforcement. One reason why individuals do not report their victimization stems from a perceived lack of support from law enforcement officials. However, law enforcement perceptions of IPV are largely unknown as the empirical literature on this topic is both limited and dated. To fill this gap in the literature, we conduct an exploratory analysis of how officers perceive IPV events. Utilizing original survey data from 498 law enforcement officers in a Southern state, officer perceptions of offenders, victims, and the credibility of IPV calls are explored. We also evaluate whether those perceptions vary by personal characteristics of officers by utilizing t -tests and correlations. Findings indicate that, overall, officer perceptions have evolved from the historical viewpoint that IPV events were a private family matter to contemporary perceptions that IPV is a serious crime that requires attention from law enforcement. Furthermore, results suggest differences in perceptions by officers' personal characteristics (i.e., gender, rank, age, and years of law enforcement experience). With increasing age and years of law enforcement experience, victim-related factors are less salient in police perceptions of IPV calls. Regarding gender, female officers are less likely than male officers to believe victims may easily leave an abusive relationship and less likely to consider physical evidence of trauma to be very important in determining the credibility of an IPV call—suggesting that female officers are more in tune with the complexity of IPV cases. Belsky, Steinberg, and Draper's sociobiological theory suggests that early family context influences an individual's developmental trajectory in adolescence. A key hypothesis derived from the developmental model is that females growing up in a home without a father will have an earlier onset of puberty and may reach pubertal maturity sooner than their peers who grow up in homes with a father present. The current study uses a nationally representative sample of American youth (Add Health) to examine the association between having an absent biological father and female biological maturity, controlling for additional theoretically informed covariates. The current study contributes to the literature by utilizing a lifetime measure of absent biological father and a biological maturity scale (measured in adolescence) that taps into multiple aspects of pubertal development. Results from multivariate regression analysis revealed no significant association between absent biological father and female biological development. This finding suggests that, contrary to the sociobiological model, having an absent biological father in childhood is not predictive of advanced pubertal development among female adolescents. It is a criminological fact that females commit fewer delinquent acts than their male counterparts. This “gender gap” has long been recognized but specific questions concerning similarities or differences in the development, persistence, and desistence of antisocial behavior among females and males remain underinvestigated. Two prominent theoretical models, Moffitt’s developmental taxonomy and Silverthorn and Frick’s delayed-onset pathway, make distinct predictions about the composition of female offenders and the nature of their offending. The current study tests these explanations using longitudinal data from the Pathways to Desistance Study, a large sample of serious juvenile offenders followed for 7 years into early adulthood. Results from a series of negative binominal regressions reveal stronger support for Moffitt rather than Silverthorn and Frick in that findings showed two groups of female offenders. Background: Acute respiratory failure develops in infants with bronchiolitis and Community acquired pneumonia (CAP) because of hypoxemia, due to mismatch between ventilation and perfusion. Nasal continuous airway pressure (nCPAP) and high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) improve the work of breathing and oxygenation .High flow nasal cannula (HFNC), also called heated humidified high flow nasal cannula (HHHFNC), is a new non-invasive ventilation therapy that seems to be well tolerated in infants with hypoxemic respiratory failure. Aim: To compare the effectiveness and the outcome of Heated Humidified High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) versus Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (NCPAP), as a primary mode of respiratory support, in patients with respiratory failure due to pneumonia or bronchiolitis at PICU regarding demographic data, length of admission, increasing of positive pressure and need of intubation. Patients and Methods: observational study was conducted on 40 patients with acute respiratory failure due to either bronchiolitis or community acquired pneumonia (CAP), admitted to Paediatric ICU, Children Hospital, Ain Shams University, in the time period between February 2018 to July 2019. The patients, aged between 1 month to 5 years, were subjected to detailed clinical history and examination. All patients received continuous monitoring of electrocardiograph,pulse oximetry and respiratory rate .The patients were treated either with (HFNC) Humidified high flow nasal cannula or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Studied groups were compared regarding demographic data, increasing in respiratory support,need of intubation, fate and length of admission during PICU stay. Results: HFNC was as efficient as CPAP in lowering RR(respiratory rate) and HR(heart rate) in infants with bronchiolitis and community acquired pneumonia. Thus HFNC group was as significant as NCPAP group in treatment of bronchiolitis and CAP regarding length of admission,increasing of positive pressure and need of iintubation in PICU . Conclusion: This study concluded that HFNC is as efficient as nCPAP for initial respiratory support in young infants, hospitalized in a PICU for moderate to severe acute respiratory failure.
