This article explores the significance of educational theory in student teachers' reflections on former compulsory school experiences. The student teachers participating in this study were given a two-part assignment: (1) to create a digital pictorial narrative about one of their former teachers, (2) to write an academic text based on their narratives. We ask what kind of shifts can be observed in student teachers' reflections when they reflect on their prior experiences from compulsory school alone as opposed to reflecting on their prior experiences in light of educational theory. The student teachers' language in the two texts was significantly different, and we found it valuable to use Vygotsky's theory of language and thinking in the analysis. The text highlights two findings: when utilising educational theory, the student teachers' focus shifted (1) from the teacher's traits to the teacher's actions and (2) from the pupil's perspective to the teacher's perspective. This case study uses qualitative data generated over three years to explore how a Chinese expert teacher constructs her personal practical theory (PPT) about teaching. The data analysis showed that the teacher successfully constructed a personally relevant, institutionally expected, and socio-culturally embedded PPT that manifested her teaching beliefs. The teacher constructed the PPT through five essential and interrelated steps: (a) identifying effective teaching practice; (b) crystalising a core concept from effective teaching; (c) proposing theoretical tenets around the core concept; (d) configuring the theoretical tenets into a preliminary PPT; (e) refining the PPT in relevant communities. The theory construction experience deepened the teacher's understanding of teaching and enhanced her confidence in engaging with educational theories and university-based scholars. However, the teacher's lack of knowledge about educational theories and hands-on tools for theory construction posed significant challenges to the teacher. This study generates new empirical evidence and conceptual insights into teacher theory construction, enriching international discussions on the theory-practice gap in education. The research findings also suggest practical implications for frontline teachers, facilitating their engagement with theories to close the theory-practice divide in their situated contexts. This article examines three films that comment on public education in Germany. Berlin Rebel High School (Alexander Kleider, 2016), Die Kinder der Utopie (Hubertus Siegert, 2019), and Herr Bachmann und seine Klasse (Maria Speth, 2021) are German documentaries that present a critique of the current educational system and, at the same time, allow glimpses into classrooms that offer alternative educational models. All three films align themselves with the educational theories of utopian, radical, or critical pedagogies and embrace an approach to education that rejects the definition of a static end goal and emphasizes the unfinished, continuous nature of pedagogical practice. In the films' examples, education's utopian dimension resides in the process of striving for positive change, in the critical analysis of the present and the purposeful and collaborative action of learners and educators to change it for the better. The analysis of the formal, narrative, and paratextual strategies of the documentaries shows that critical hope is generated by the films on two levels, first, through the portrayal of concrete examples of alternative pedagogical practices and, second, through the films' participation in the educational process. One vital constant in pedagogical narratives is the link between children's play and education. Study of their relationship from a philosophical perspective is marked by paradoxes and tensions that have often raised the implementation of their use in educational practice in differing and even opposing ways. This article seeks to set out new ways of interpreting the relationship between play and education from a conciliatory approach. This relationship is explored from the works of three contemporaneous pragmatist thinkers of the late nineteenth: Jane Addams, John Dewey, and George Mead. The results suggest that the possibility of a relationship between children's play and education is not so much found in the development of potentially educational materials, an extraordinary teaching method, or strictly teaching the curriculum. Rather, the significant contribution is concentrated in the conviction that play could be crucial for the cultivation of democracy. Pragmatists such as Addams and Dewey relied on the aesthetic experience of play as one of the most powerful possibilities for not only keeping democracy alive but also cultivating a cosmopolitan citizenship. Traditional artificial selection of job information is difficult to solve the problem of job seekers finding suitable positions quickly and accurately. This article is based on ant colony algorithm for visual analysis and personalized recommendation of job information. Through visual analysis of massive job information on the network, personalized recommendations are made based on job seekers' professional, skill, behavior, and other information. A visual analysis and personalized recommendation system for job information is established, and recommendation accuracy, efficiency, and recall rate are evaluated and analyzed using recommendation theory, realize comprehensive evaluation of information visualization analysis and personalized recommendation quality of position information based on ant colony algorithm. Educational theorizing makes use of various tools and perspectives to understand how differentiation processes in education have emerged as responses to socio-historical developments. Drawing on a systematic literature review, this article finds that educational research has framed these responses in five different ways: as structural-functional response; communicative response; cultural-historical response; hegemonic response; and as a response to capability development. Scrutinizing these scholarly understandings of differentiation from a meta-theoretical perspective, the article investigates, firstly, the kinds of knowledge generated within each approach; secondly, how researchers and researched subjects—differentiating agents and differentiated patients—are positioned relative to one another; and thirdly, how these approaches contribute to thinking about inclusion and exclusion in education. Drawing on insights from the author's fieldwork in multi-ethnic Southwest China, each of these five theoretical conceptualizations are interrogated with respect to their potential to accommodate conceptions of individual or collective agency. The ideal of theoretical integration in motivational approaches to education is worthy, but in this commentary, I raise some (semi)contrarian concerns about both the meaning of theoretical integration and how that occurs. Integration is more than an aggregation or combination of measures but rather involves synthesis into a framework with theoretic and meta-theoretic integrity. Across disciplines and fields of inquiry, the development of science largely happens within theories and at their boundaries. Integration in practice (e.g., interventions) raises different issues, mainly concerning the coordination of elements that may address different classroom issues, and therefore can stem from multiple models and theories. I also describe the common direction and progress of motivational psychology over the past several decades, albeit with some “jingle –jangle” trends muddying our conceptual waters. Yet contrary to the view that it is our multiple perspectives that confuse teachers, I argue that confusion more centrally lies in the wide gap between our generally student-centered theories and public policies and institutional norms that hinder their implementation and their integration into practice. The interest of entrepreneurial competencies has increased in the academic world, yet little has been done to review how these are taught. This paper aims to review how entrepreneurial competencies interventions are delivered to undergraduate students and to shed light on the current gap between these interventions and what is proposed in entrepreneurial competencies frameworks. Therefore, decision-making and other entrepreneurial competencies delivered in undergraduate education are reviewed. A systematic literature review was conducted to detect papers reporting decision-making interventions; 15 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2016 and 2022 are included in this review. Results indicate that, in most cases, current decision-making interventions in undergraduate education are not lined up with entrepreneurial competencies frameworks. Few papers report enhancing decision-making in students whereas the others report improving other competencies such as self-awareness. It is shown that interventions with "through" learning objectives and its teaching methods provide the greatest opportunities for undergraduates to develop decision making competence; that is the knowledge, attitudes, and skills to grapple uncertainty, ambiguity, and risk. Inquiries into the medium of education take up a question that has so far usually been answered teleologically or psychologically. The coherence of educational endeavors has been illustrated by their objective, and this again has been illustrated by the changes in the state of the educatees. The difficulty of such an approach is that no educator is able to know the inner state of the educatee, i.e., that which the latter really experiences, remembers, and expects during the process of education. Moreover, the drawback of all teleology is that it does not provide a concept for understanding the frequent failure of these efforts. Higher education institutions must prepare students for success in the dynamic knowledge economy by providing a high-quality educational experience. As the world and our understanding of learning processes continually evolve, educators face the challenge of developing innovative strategies to engage and motivate students in their own learning. Scholarly literature advocates a shift away from traditional educational methods towards personalised, collaborative, and contextualised education. This transformation can be understood through the lens of Dilemma Theory, which reveals that current educational approaches predominantly align with Western cultural values. The suppression of opposing values has created a need for approaches that reflect a broader spectrum of values. It is important to recognise that navigating value conflicts is integral to creative endeavours and resolving these conflicts enables progress towards successful outcomes. This study is the first to apply the theoretical principles of Malcolm Knowles’ theory of andragogy to evaluate data collected from learners who participated in team science training workshops in a biomedical research setting. Briefly, andragogy includes six principles: the learner’s self-concept, the role of experience, readiness to learn, orientation to learning, the learner’s need to know, and intrinsic motivation. Using an embedded study design, the primary focus was on qualitative data, with quantitative data complementing the qualitative findings. The deductive analysis demonstrated that approximately 85% of the qualitative data could be connected to at least one andragogical principle. Participant responses to positive evaluation questions were largely related to two principles: readiness to learn and problem-based learning orientation. Participant responses to negative questions were largely connected to two different principles: the role of experience and self-direction. Inductive analysis found an additional theme: meeting biological needs. Quantitative survey results supported the qualitative findings. The study findings demonstrate that andragogy can serve as a valuable construct to integrate into the development of effective team science training for biomedical researchers.

The level of online learner involvement has a significant impact on the effectiveness and quality of higher education. Online learner engagement, however, is also a complicated, multifaceted idea that has developed through time and been defined and assessed in various ways by various academics and practitioners. In this paper, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the theoretical and practical aspects of online learner engagement in higher education. In Part 1, we trace the historical development of the concept of learner engagement from the 19th to the 21st centuries, and examine its current understanding and challenges. We also review some of the most prominent frameworks and models that have been proposed to conceptualize, design, implement, and evaluate online learner engagement. Later, in Part 2, we present some of the best practices and strategies that have been proven to enhance online learner engagement in various disciplines and contexts. We also discuss some of the emerging trends and future directions for research and practice in this field. We hope that this paper will serve as a useful resource for educators, researchers, and policymakers who are interested in improving online learner engagement in higher education.

This paper tackles the question of in which sense, if any, educational theory should be considered as ‘political’. From a pragmatist perspective it evaluates three meanings of the term: first, the political as an exception, such as Rancière’s interruption of the existing order, and second, the political as something that is always already given, such as in Derrida’s concept of iteration. Third, the paper turns towards Rorty’s plea for understanding philosophy as cultural politics, i.e., as intervention into the ongoing public discourse. It is argued that this third meaning of the term is better suited for understanding the political of educational theory as it is realistically modest and enables to analyze the political effectiveness of educational theory. These considerations are framed by both a reflection on the very possibility of drawing distinctions between theory and politics as well as an outlook on possible consequences following from an understanding of educational theory as cultural politics. In the outlook, the paper asks why we can hardly see any publicly relevant educational theory and provides suggestions for a “caring critique”, a careful attitude towards our own researching practices, situations, and assemblies.

Teacher education in Finland has followed a research-based approach for decades, but the approach has rarely been investigated from the viewpoint of in-service teachers. This study explores how in-service teachers experienced the meaning of educational science, research and theory (ESRT) and how teachers engage with educational research as part of their work. Using a phenomenologically oriented analytical approach, the informants were grouped into three categories. In the first category, teachers understood the meaning of ESRT broadly, whereas those in the second group viewed the meaning as primarily instrumental, and those in the third group considered it insignificant. The informants reportedly engage with educational research only rarely due to a lack of time and opportunities, and the fact that their working conditions do not support a research-based work orientation. Interprofessional competence is needed to improve health care outcomes. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of theoretically grounded interprofessional education (IPE) experiences to advance interprofessional competencies for occupational and physical therapy doctoral students. In addition, a pretest/postest survey was designed to determine the participants' perceptions of knowledge attainment, roles, and attitudes. Two cohorts of students (N = 115) completed surveys pre and post IPE experiences. Statistically significant changes were found on perception of roles and knowledge attainment. An extraordinary amount of data is becoming available in educational settings, collected from a wide range of Educational Technology tools and services. This creates opportunities for using methods from Artificial Intelligence and Learning Analytics (LA) to improve learning and the environments in which it occurs. And yet, analytics results produced using these methods often fail to link to theoretical concepts from the learning sciences, making them difficult for educators to trust, interpret and act upon. At the same time, many of our educational theories are difficult to formalise into testable models that link to educational data. New methodologies are required to formalise the bridge between big data and educational theory. This paper demonstrates how causal modelling can help to close this gap. It introduces the apparatus of causal modelling, and shows how it can be applied to well‐known problems in LA to yield new insights. We conclude with a consideration of what causal modelling adds to the theory‐versus‐data debate in education, and extend an invitation to other investigators to join this exciting programme of research. Since the 1970s, the concepts of "lifeworld" and "everyday life" have been part of the discourse of social pedagogy and social and educational work in general. Xavier Úcar's objective in this article is to generate and communicate socio‐pedagogical knowledge that helps social pedagogues to build socio‐educational relationships that are more effective, more sustainable, more satisfactory, and ultimately richer in terms of both experiences and learning for participants. A conceptually oriented, nonsystematic analysis procedure was used to conduct this research. The procedure involved an in‐depth investigation of documents that focus on the two target areas of this study: (1) social pedagogy, and (2) lifeworld and everyday life. The results describe the theoretical background of lifeworld and everyday life, discuss the development of the perspective of "lifeworld orientation" within the framework of social pedagogy in Germany, and analyze how everyday life is understood through actions undertaken by social pedagogues. Clinicians with teaching and training roles should be adequately trained and assessed. However, some debate exists as to what the nature of this training should be. Historically, a postgraduate certificate in education was a pre-requisite to becoming a GP trainer but this is changing with growing concern that such a pre-requisite might act as a deterrent to potential GP trainers. This research examines the impact of a scheme designed to provide an alternative, more practical and focused, pathway to becoming a GP trainer. We interviewed 26 course participants and stakeholders of the London GP Training Course (LGPTC), observed teaching sessions, and analysed course materials. We asked what elements of the course were and weren't effective, for whom, and under what circumstances. Here, we present a summary of our main findings – that GP trainers want to know practically, not theoretically, how to be a trainer; formative assessment boosts trainees' confidence in their own skills and abilities; short, practical GP training courses can help enhance the numbers of GP trainers; important questions remain about the role and value of educational theory in education faculty development. Globally, educational psychology and theory have advanced the knowledge of various ways college students learn and retain information. Low academic performance in college education is directly attributed to learning disabilities. Using the underlying mechanism of mobile-assisted language learning, the present study explored how self-monitoring impacted self-management, as well as beliefs about language learning skills. The present study hypothesized that college students' beliefs about the problems associated with mobile phones to learn a language serve as a moderator in the relationship between self-management and beliefs about how their language skills are improving. Furthermore, this study investigated the role of self-management as a mediator in the relationship between self-monitoring and beliefs about mobile-assisted language skills. The data was gathered from 329 college students in the Chinese city of Shanghai. The PLS-based SEM results highlighted a direct relationship between self-monitoring and self-management, during mobile-assisted language learning in college English teaching. The findings also confirmed the underlying role of college students' beliefs on the issues associated with using mobile phones to learn a second language. Today, multilevel analytics on educational governance, management, and leadership are common in educational leadership research, drawing on a variety of approaches and academic disciplines. This article develops a threefold critique of the state of the art. First, this article argues that research on higher education leadership often represents an unreflected position regarding the societal role of higher education—decontextualising leadership from external practices and disregarding its internal object. Second, the approaches applied in leadership as a multilevel phenomenon can be problematic. On one end of the spectrum, we find particularist approaches focusing on individual levels representing disparate and often incompatible theoretical perspectives. As these positions rarely communicate, they have difficulties producing a coherent representation of higher education leadership. Universalist approaches, in turn, study leadership on several levels but offer identical conceptual tools for any societal practice, thereby losing the sensibility of the societal, cultural, and economic tasks of higher-education institutions, and for their specific character as institutions for research and teaching. Thirdly, research on educational leadership mostly fail to provide adequate theory of pedagogical interaction and influence. This is a twofold challenge. On the one hand, research lacks a theory of the object of educational leadership, namely teaching and studying. On the other, although research often defines leadership as a process of influence aimed at supporting learning, it lacks a theory able to explain what constitutes this influence. After theoretical debate around the inter or transdisciplinary character related to production of knowledge at the contemporary university; Education was again being moved back to the epistemological tribunal. No longer by its condition as a discipline, but due to that the trait of discipline itself faced the institutional demise. With that dilemma, a former question returned in educational field, namely: how Education might be comprehended as scientific discipline? That question turns out to be essential to ponder the epistemic role of educational research. Oriented to that, the notion of academic discipline is examined, exploring their conceptual requirements and limits. Accordingly, the Wilfred Carr's theoretical proposal of educative practice is revisited, and connected with two fundamental epistemic dimensions for understanding the meaning of discipline of knowledge: the disciplinary language and object. The purpose of this article is to review and put into perspective certain anthropological foundations involved in educational work around the end of education, highlighting that teaching practice cannot avoid them. For the author, it is worth noting that the anthropological components and scope of the aims of education must constitute the center of all educational endeavors. Thus, from the perspective of the philosophy of education, this approach is in line with retaking concepts from the classical philosophy of realism with an Aristotelian basis, to renew the formative commitment that education implies today. Specifically, the author states that, returning to the classical conception of paideia, educating is mainly training. In conclusion, the author emphasizes that educational work, especially in the school environment, has the purpose of effectively helping students reach the fullness of their personal being, specifying five purposes in this process: to inspire students to be surprised about reality and also to awaken their interest in learning and training themselves; educate character around truth, goodness and beauty; develop virtues so that students live in coherence with their existential purposes; training supposes a process of personalization, of personal growth; and finally that education is oriented towards the profound growth of the interior life. This paper introduces this Special Issue celebrating the writing and professional work of Paul Hirst. The international range of contributors include scholars who knew him and his work in his heyday, as well as younger generations of philosophers of education. In this Introduction the editors, in conversation, first introduce the papers on Hirst's early work on liberal education and the nature of knowledge, and then go on to discuss his later turn to advocacy of an education centred on social practices and his discussions of the nature of educational theory and teacher education. They consider those papers that refer to his work on the place of the arts in education and those involving detailed exploration of his work in moral and religious education. The extensive nature of his high-level administrative work in London and Cambridge, as well as nationally, is also recognized. A paper based on his personal correspondence reveals the lively man behind the work. Paul Hirst's writings about the nature of educational theory continue to be important to the field of education. In this paper I unpack and analyse in some detail his conception of educational theory. I centre my discussion on three issues. First, I look at the 'big picture', how Hirst situates educational theory between the foundational disciplines and educational practice, and in so doing endows it with a specific function. His view is contrasted with the view of D. J. O'Connor; the discussion between the two of them is well known. Second, with the big picture in place, I inquire deeper into Hirst's view of the raison d'être of educational theory. Here his views are compared with those of the German philosopher of education Erich Weniger. Finally, I discuss Hirst's later revisions of his view, most notably his argument that the justification of educational theory by the foundational disciplines is not enough. Educational theory must also pass the test of practice, he claims. I judge this to be a considerable change, one that blurs the big picture rather than making it clearer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Simulation-based procedure training is now integrated within health professions education with literature demonstrating increased performance and translational patient-level outcomes. The focus of published work has been centered around description of such procedural training and the creation of realistic part-task models. There has been little attention with regards to design consideration, specifically around how simulation and educational theory should directly inform programme creation. Using a case-based approach in cardiology as an example, we present a blueprint for theory-informed simulation-based procedure training linking learning needs analysis and defining suitable objectives to matched fidelity. We press the importance of understanding how to implement and utilise task competence benchmarking in practice, and the role of feedback and debriefing in cycles of repeated practice. We conclude with evaluation and argue why this should be considered part of the initial design process rather than an after-thought following education delivery.
