Studies document difficulties undergraduate pre-nursing and allied health students face when learning human anatomy and physiology (A&P) course content. A comprehensive synthesis exploring the teaching practices within the course and how those practices are evaluated is warranted. This scoping literature review identified 78 journal articles investigating teaching practices, and we charted their research methods, student outcomes, and institutional contexts. Content analysis found the teaching practices described most frequently in A&P education research literature involved multiple aligned changes across the curriculum, including student activities, course delivery, and assessments. Critical appraisal of study methodologies revealed that most studies in undergraduate A&P were longitudinal, included comparison groups, and used simple inferential statistics. In contrast, few studies listed limitations of their research, collected data from multiple institutions, or reported student demographic data. We believe these factors pose notable limitations to the interpretation of A&P education studies across institutional contexts. The results of this review identify future lines of inquiry to enrich existing evidence about pedagogical interventions in A&P courses.

Research and publications on differentiation instruction in various subjects have developed rapidly in the world. Unfortunately, this trend is not directly proportional to the subject of physical education, even though differentiation instruction is the latest learning trend that is based on student learning needs. This research aims to analyze the metrics and visualization of differentiation instruction publications over the last ten years (2013-2023) using the literature review method. Google Scholar inspection using the Publish or Perish application only found nine articles (out of 16 articles) that met the VOSviewer visualization analysis criteria. As a result, the highest publication metrics were only three articles in 2014 and 53 citations as the highest top citations in 2019 for two articles. Network term differentiation is limited to three terms: analysis, lesson, and education. The VOSviewer visualization confirms that differentiation instruction has great potential to be developed in physical education to contribute to fulfilling students' learning experiences by their learning potential preferences. Future research can consider aspects of differentiation instruction that are not limited to teachers evaluating student learning outcomes based on differentiation instruction, and using differentiation instruction to improve various skills that help students survive in real life.

This systematic literature review (SLR) scrutinizes the trends and interrelationships prevalent in Virtual Reality (VR) applications within educational frameworks, analyzing a comprehensive pool of 43 theses conducted in a Eurasian country. The primary objectives encompass investigating learning-teaching theories, learning domains, design elements, VR typology, and the departments undertaking VR research. Findings from the SLR underscore a significant concentration of VR research activities within technology-oriented departments. The prevalent approach involves experimental assessments of diverse variables within VR learning environments, yet a conspicuous dearth of design-centric investigations is observed. This highlights a critical need for comprehensive studies elucidating the design and developmental processes within VR applications, especially in light of the current characterization of VR research as lacking established standards. Moreover, a noteworthy revelation is the prevalent absence of a robust theoretical framework across the majority of studies. This absence may pose impediments to the widespread adoption of VR within educational paradigms, given the pivotal role of learning-teaching theories in guiding pedagogical processes. Examination of design elements highlights the prominence of realistic experiences, passive observation, mobility, and interaction with the environment. Recognizing the potential impact of diverse design elements on enhancing realism, aligning specific elements with distinct learning domains holds promise for augmenting the immersive quality of VR experiences. This research emphasizes the critical need for more comprehensive, theory-guided, and design-focused VR studies to propel its integration effectively within educational landscapes.

The ability to interact or engage with the instructor, other students, and the content i.e., to experience online student engagement, is one main difference between traditional and digital media employed in teaching and learning processes. As literature on this topic in the Turkish context has proliferated, to date, virtually no systematic reviews of this research have been carried out in order to identify potential gaps in the literature. To address this issue, this study investigated previously conducted research in chronological order on student engagement at the post-secondary level in the Turkish context using a PRISMA-based systematic review screening process. The results show that online engagement research and practices have clearly increased and diversified over time. Specifically, online engagement research in the Turkish context has tended to focus on computer science students studying in online-only, LMS-supported environments where their behavioral engagement has been investigated quantitatively. Considering these findings, this systematic review suggests that future studies in the Turkish context should examine other fields besides computer science education, focus more on collaborative tools and the social dimension of engagement, use more qualitative methods, and investigate blended environments as well as online-only.

We examined how Learning Analytics literature represents participants from diverse societies by comparing the studies published with samples from WEIRD (Western, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) nations versus non-WEIRD nations. By analyzing the Learning Analytics studies published during 2015-2019 (N = 360), we found that most of the studies were on WEIRD samples, with at least 58 percent of the total studies on WEIRD samples. Through keyword analysis, we found that the studies on WEIRD samples' research topics focused on self-regulated learning and feedback received in learning environments. The studies on non-WEIRD samples focused on the collaborative and social nature of learning. Our investigation of the analysis tools used for the studies suggested the limitations of some software in analyzing languages in diverse countries. Our analysis of theoretical frameworks revealed that most studies on both WEIRD and non-WEIRD samples did not identify a theoretical framework. The studies on WEIRD and non-WEIRD samples convey the similarities of Learning Analytics and Educational Data Mining. We conclude by discussing the importance of integrating multifaceted elements of the participant samples, including cultural values, societal values, and geographic areas, and present recommendations on ways to promote inclusion and diversity in Learning Analytics research.

A comprehensive examination of the impact of instructional leadership provided by school principals on teacher commitment was carried out across different nations, including Indonesia. This research employed a literature review approach, scrutinizing journal articles that delved into the connection between the instructional leadership of school principals and teacher commitment. After applying predefined criteria to 120 chosen articles in this domain, only 15 articles met the specified criteria and were subsequently incorporated into the review. The findings of the literature review revealed that the instructional leadership of school principals and the resulting organizational commitment have a positive, and mostly said statistically significant, effect on teacher organizational commitment in various countries.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused tremendous upheaval in schooling. In addition to devasting effects on students, these disruptions had consequences for researchers conducting studies on education programs and policies. Given the likelihood of future large-scale disruptions, it is important for researchers to plan resilient studies and think critically about adaptations when such turbulence arises. In this article, we utilize qualitative analysis of interviews with research study leaders to illuminate practical and methodological challenges, as well as promising practices that arose during the pandemic period. We find that researchers made pivots to address practical challenges and protect the feasibility of their studies. We also find that researchers took precautions, where possible, to understand and bolster internal validity. However, these pivots frequently surfaced additional threats to construct and external validity. We conclude with recommendations for future studies conducted in times of prolonged unplanned school closures or other large-scale disruptions.

This paper discusses the type of professional learning that international academic mobility makes possible during a PhD program. The conceptual approach used Pierre Bourdieu's field theory, which allows analyzing PhD students as 'newcomer' members who bet on mobility under the idea of "illusio." The methodology used was qualitative. The information was obtained through semi-structured interviews with twenty-four new researchers who studied in four prestigious PhD programs in education and history in Mexico. The findings demonstrate that mobility fosters relationships with peers abroad, makes it easier to learn to do research, favors the reconversion of capital within the scientific field, and offers practical knowledge related to the need to publish results in order to achieve international recognition.

In this article I focus on the use of mixed methods in designing a classroom observation instrument known as the Facilitative Orientation to Reading Teaching (FORT). The instrument was designed to capture the teaching of reading and formed part of a project that took place in 2 Kwa-Zulu Natal primary schools. Participants were 8 teachers and their learners. The goal was to investigate how a teacher's pedagogical content knowledge can affect the literacy acquisition of Foundation and Intermediate Phase learners. In the study reported on here I used a facilitative-restrictive teaching and learning model based on the theories of, among others, Bernstein and Vygotsky, as well as Scarborough's Reading Rope theory. The instrument design was based on an original classroom instrument that captured only quantitative data. Through the addition of qualitative data, the instrument could capture classroom practice more accurately. Findings indicate that, ultimately, 1 of the participating teachers appeared to be successfully leading their learners from decoding to comprehension across the important Grade 3 to 4 threshold, where learners are expected to move from learning to read to be being able to learn from reading.

Educational games, prevalent in contemporary settings, leverage game-based learning (GBL) to actively engage and enhance learners' knowledge and skill acquisition through captivating in-game learning activities. To assess the effectiveness of GBL, game-based assessment (GBA) has emerged. GBA employs gameplay for learners to attain educational objectives while capturing data for analyzing their in-game competencies. The integration of gameplay in assessments has garnered increasing attention to GBA. This review of 21 studies provides an overview of the application of GBA in the field of education, covering aspects of the publication nature, theoretical frameworks, game types, in-game assessment details, and the assessed subjects and knowledge. Key findings include: (1) the annual number of publications fluctuates; a majority of studies originate from the USA; (2) the supporting theory tends to be unitary, with the evidence-centered design model cited the most; (3) simulation, immersive, and video games with rich game elements are applied most as assessment tools, and in-game assessment details are associated with game features; and (4) GBA is predominantly used in physics education. These findings indicate that applying GBA in education is promising with solid theoretical support, and practitioners are suggested to design GBA according to their educational needs and game features.

Identifying gifted students in today's complex context requires precision in both the definition of the concept and its constituent characteristics. However, there are discrepancies worldwide in the instruments established to diagnose gifted students. This study undertook a systematic literature review (SLR) to identify the most representative characteristics of this profile. A database of 676 articles from Scopus and WoS was analyzed, of which 37 were screened for further study using a content analysis approach. The study aimed to answer two research questions: (1) What are the prevailing characteristics of research on giftedness? (2) What are the challenges and barriers to current research and practice in gifted research? These inquiries were addressed through a series of disaggregated questions divided into four categories: publication metrics, study methodology, identification and support of giftedeness, and technology used. The main findings were a) the lack of standardized measures for identifying gifted individuals; b) the important role of teacher training in identifying and supporting gifted profiles; and c) the inherent limitations of research on giftedness, which constrain the generalizability of its findings. It was concluded that emotional intelligence plays a critical role in giftedness. Key challenges identified include discrepancies in giftedness identification instruments and the impact of cultural and socio-economic factors on gifted education.

The article focuses on the re-constructions of power-securing structures behind social inequalities. This conceptual study aims to synthesize different transdisciplinary studies from critical age, gender, race, and disability studies to gain an intersectional view of the power effects of discriminatory social habits, practices, and structures. The results show an intersectional synthesis regarding the phenomenon of adultism. A typical definition of adultism is the abuse of power by adults towards children while adulthood/childhood are socially constructed. Adultism can be seen as the discriminatory axis of social positioning according to age or generation, consisting of subordinating social practices and attitudes that subsume into social norms and structures. The theoretical concept of adultism contains various methodological approaches and paradigms. Different fields according to social constructivism like ethnomethodology, poststructuralism, linguistics, and symbolic interactionism emerge into a new theoretical framework. Their offered terms like Doing Difference or Age, Subjectivation, and Generationing, are contrasted and brought together into a new theoretical framework and a Theory of Childilization. This theory shows a necessary shift of perspectives to the approach of critical adulthood and the question of how childhood is performed by adulthood regarding generationing practices, structures, and privileged adult acting. The new theory reveals recurring patterns, discriminatory structures, and dominating practices based on the example of adultistic narratives. These narratives combine the mentioned disciplines around the subject related to structures, interactions, and cultures. Here, using a relational perspective, unseen, unspoken, and unheard practices by adults are uncovered, and can be applied to a reframing of education and learning environments, or of negative power effects on the lower-status group of children. The theory of Childilization is enfolded in a triad of mature-normative framing, re-framings, and counter-framings to new perspectives on adultism. With empirical evidence, the article shows a re-framing of learning and identity-building on a community-based level and examples of counter-framings by young actors. In the context of a Hawaiian case study, age-different learning environments of progressive education at six schools in Oahu (n=6) can be shown. The case study illustrates examples of critical adulthood in contrast to common adultistic narratives like pathologizing, or educative ordering and the realization of some counter-framings of children. And finally, it emphasizes the necessity of conceptualizing adultism on the part of those affected--accompanied by the demand to equalize children's rights and to deconstruct adultistic concepts of "being a minor child" vs. "being a mature adult". The article is therefore challenging "good" norms and orders of adult societies, citizenship, education, and even research and sciences.

This paper presents the findings from a research project to analyse 30 years of the "Research in Learning Technology" journal (1993 to 2022). The analysis explores the content of the articles in terms of key topics and their relationship with sector events and policies, discussing key terms such as virtual learning environment, massive open online courses (MOOCs) and virtual reality (VR). It also considers how the terminology used to describe the field has changed over time, starting with a focus on the computer and expanding to include a range of common terms such as e-learning, technology enhanced learning (TEL) and digital. Between 1993 and 2015, issues of the journal were accompanied by editorials. This analysis considers how the role of the editorials helped to shape and establish the journal and influence the field of learning technology to take a more research and theory-based approach. Finally, an analysis of the locations of the authors who have published in the journal has demonstrated a shift from a predominantly UK-based journal to one with more international reach.

Flipped learning is an educational method that utilizes technology to provide instruction outside regular class hours, enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes. Bibliometric studies have been increasingly used to assess the status of research in a field. However, no study has explored research trends in implementing the flipped classroom model (FCM) in educational research. Hence, this research explored trends in implementing FCM in educational research using bibliometric analysis. For this purpose, I analyzed the data from 1,093 publications indexed in the Web of Science database using VOSviewer software. The results showed that publications on flipped classrooms increased annually, and most studies were conducted in 2020. In addition, the results also revealed that Interactive Learning Environments journal published the most articles, and most of the publications were conducted in the USA. The institution with the most publications is the University of Hong Kong, while the researcher with the most publications is Gwo-Jen Hwang. Furthermore, the results also revealed 10 clusters demonstrating research trends in flipped research in the education field. Based on the findings, recommendations for practice and research are made.

Students benefit from a nonlinear learning path, also known as a nonsequential learning path, because it allows them to control the pace and sequence of their learning. However, the dynamics of a nonlinear learning path, particularly within an open learning environment like MOOCs, remain underexplored. The current study aims to map out various nonlinear learning paths and explore the potential for personalisation within these environments. Guided by the PRISMA 2020 Statement, we conducted a comprehensive review of 3,418 articles from three databases, focusing on 30 that were relevant to nonlinear learning paths in open learning environments. We discovered that a nonlinear learning path in MOOCs involves path selection, cyclical paths, or skipped paths, all influenced by the design of the MOOC learning materials. In classrooms utilizing an open learning environment, a nonlinear learning path is facilitated by activities such as face-to-face or online discussions, self-study materials, student-created content, project mentoring or coaching, peer feedback, and co-learning activities. Additionally, personalisation, tailored by educators or technology, is key to preventing students from becoming disoriented within these open learning environments. Our findings highlight the importance of promoting nonlinear learning paths in both classrooms and MOOCs, developing learning path recommender systems, and creating supportive MOOC learning materials. Future research should explore students' perceptions of nonlinear learning paths within an open learning environment, particularly focusing on the integration and impact of MOOC learning materials.

The digital transformation in higher education can be observed in numerous ways and practices. Recently, post-pandemic digitalization played a significant role in the increase of the educational use of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality, extended reality, and social media. Among these, social media has dominated daily life long before the rest of the technologies. Hence, examining the current situation of social media studies within educational research aids in envisioning the future vision. This study aims to outline the trends in the use of social media platforms by analyzing them within educational research published between 2017-2023. For this purpose, 473 articles in the Web of Science database were examined regarding the dimensions of publication year, country of publication, author, keyword, article type, the method used, sampling, data collection tools and analysis methods, and social media use. The findings of this study are believed to guide practitioners and researchers in their practice and consideration of social media within educational environments.

This systematic literature review explores the ethical considerations and challenges instructional designers face when integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the instructional design process for adult learners. Using the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework to examine the relationship of ethics, pedagogy, and technology in educational contexts, considering the increasing usage of AI. Synthesizing data from peer-reviewed publications, qualitative research, and theoretical papers, the review examines the evolution and application of AI-driven instructional technologies, the ethical issues encountered, and how they affect the educational experiences of adult learners. Crucial topics identified include balancing ethical standards with technological advancements, ensuring learner privacy and data security, and mitigating biases in AI algorithms. The results highlight the need for transparency in AI applications and the ongoing need for professional growth to successfully negotiate the changing ethical environment. This review highlights significant gaps in the literature, including the lack of comprehensive ethical frameworks tailored for AI in adult education, the scarcity of long-term empirical studies on AI's impact, and the need for practical implementation strategies for instructional designers. Addressing these gaps is essential for enhancing the quality and integrity of AI-enhanced adult education. By focusing on stronger ethical frameworks and coordinated efforts among educators, technologists, and policymakers, this review intends to improve the quality and integrity of AI-enhanced adult learning.

This comprehensive scoping review aimed to identify and synthesize the existing research on professional development (PD) for educators and educational leaders in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) between 2018 and 2023. Fourteen scholarly articles covering a wide range of topics related to education in the UAE were collected and analyzed. The review revealed that PD initiatives in the UAE often focus on enhancing teacher effectiveness and leadership skills, particularly in the context of educational reforms and inclusive education practices. However, significant challenges were identified, including implementation gaps, cultural barriers, and resistance to centrally imposed PD programs. The findings suggest that while PD programs positively impact teacher performance and educational quality, further efforts are needed to address the challenges within the UAE's unique socio-cultural context.

Continuing education (CE) plays a crucial role in workforce development and economic growth across Asia, yet the landscape of CE research in the region has not been comprehensively mapped. A comprehensive bibliometric analysis of continuing education (CE) research in Asia from 1972 to 2023 was carried out, utilizing data from the Scopus database to map the evolving landscape of CE research in the region. Findings revealed a significant surge in research output since the late 1990s, with East Asian countries, particularly China, Hong Kong (China), and Taiwan (ROC), emerging as leaders in the field. The analysis uncovers several key patterns: institutional collaborations tend to cluster regionally, there's a noticeable generational gap in researcher's networks, and the healthcare sector dominates CE research topics. Recent trends indicate a shift towards digital learning approaches and learner-centered methodologies. The study also highlights the need for increased cross-border collaborations and expansion of CE research beyond the healthcare sector. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of CE research trends in Asia and provides insights for future directions in the field.

Arguably, the ability to generalize is an essential characteristic of students who succeed in mathematics and computer science. Teachers should be aware of its presence in their classroom and have tools to encourage its existence. Thus, it is important to examine the successful ways that generalization is taught. This systematic review examined and synthesized literature regarding teaching generalization and looked for indicators of success when teaching it. The findings showed that the most common way generalization is taught is through patterning tasks, primarily in K-6. Successful generalization was most frequently assessed by "caught not taught" methods. The primary indicator of success was an algebraic expression which, unfortunately, does not guarantee that generalization has occurred in the mind of the student. In summary, very few methods of teaching generalization have actually been journaled, and there is a dearth of methods to evaluate or assess if generalization has occurred.

This literature review examines the use of photography in educational research and in education, to learn how photography could be better used in teaching and learning mathematics and mathematics education research. The authors analyzed 125 publications published between 1975 and 2023 to identify different research methods and teaching solutions that utilize photography. Within educational research two main approaches that are often used combined were photo-elicitation (photographs are used in an interview as a stimulus) and photovoice (taking photographs is a way the participant communicates their perspective). Mathematics education research could also combine these methods, for example in identity research. Our findings regarding teaching show that photographs have an important role in connecting mathematics to the real world and for visualizing mathematics. The best way to engage students is when they take photographs of themselves as a starting point to mathematical activity. Based on this review we identify future exploratory directions and various research gaps.

Reports on the evaluation of the most relevant themes on career adaptability through bibliometric analysis using the keyword "career adaptability" as its input aims to get a comprehensive view of current issues and trends in career adaptability research. The VOSviewer software in collaboration with Microsoft Excel and Open Refine was adopted as tool to visualize the network of authors, countries of origins and keywords in publication data mined on June 19 2022. The analysis found a total of 728 scientific publication from 1981 to 2022. The results show that in the last 15 years the number of career adaptability publications has grown very significantly. The United States is a major country contributing of publications. Author analysis presents Nota L as the most prolific author, while Savickas L is a prominent author while Guan Y is the writer with the best writing network with 8 other writers on career adaptability. Academic Press Inc. dominates the publication with 22.94% of it is production. Keyword analysis shows that career adaptability studies in the last two decades have focused on the theme of career planning through the establishment of a career guidance framework that aims to create prosperity.

This study was conducted to examine the advantages and disadvantages of the Suggestopedia Method (SM) in English instruction, utilizing a systematic literature review. The study's sample consisted of 17 research articles identified through the purposeful sampling method. Google Scholar and Social Science Network search engines were used for data collection. Boolean expression and content analysis methods were employed for the analysis of the obtained data. The research revealed that the SM is a method that provides significant advantages to English instruction. It was observed that there is a meaningful difference in the advantageous aspect of the SM concerning its advantages and disadvantages in English instruction. Additionally, it was concluded that the SM supports foreign language acquisition as a whole. As a result of the systematic literature review, it was determined that according to some research findings the SM is directly related to the reduction of students' age and attitude. In this context, it can be suggested that the method can be used from the preschool level to higher education. In-service training can be organized to improve teachers' attitudes toward the SM. Furthermore, teachers from different disciplines can collaborate to assess the effectiveness of the method through collaborative studies.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI-Gen) in education is a challenge for educational administrations due to the benefits and risks of its use. This research seeks to analyse the scientific production of AI-Gen in the educational field. The method used was a bibliometric analysis of descriptive and quantitative documents from the Web of Science database. The VOSviewer statistical programme was used to identify the keyword clusters and to create the network map. The results of this study ascertain that 2023 is the birth of AI-Gen research in education and has since produced a total of 178 papers, where Australia heads the ranking of countries with studies on this subject matter. The ChatGPT phenomenon materialises as a focus of study in the majority of cited research. The study includes seven keyword clusters, where the IA-Gen cluster which is related to terms such as challenges, risks and opportunities are highlighted. Following the discussion, the main conclusion of the study denotes that further research is required on the use of AI-Gen during the teaching-learning process in several educational stages to prevent plagiarism and to obtain a comprehensive understanding of this technology as an educational resource.

Previous studies have revealed some ambiguity regarding the role of research in teacher education and teachers 'use of research in their profession. In view of this, a research project was started in 2019 with the aim of developing a connection between research and practice through a popular scientific approach. Student teachers create video pitches and didactic materials based on their master's theses to transfer knowledge to the school community. The current study investigates how teachers perceived student teachers 'scientific master's theses when they are communicated in a popular scientific way. Ten Finnish primary school teachers were interviewed in 2022 and 2023, and the data was analysed through reflexive thematic analysis. The findings show that the teachers found the student teachers ' popular scientific materials to be beneficial to the teachers 'own learning, the development of students 'digital competence and the recruitment of new teachers. The teachers also noted that the student teachers 'materials were more accessible than traditional theses, but they identified the need for further developments in the platform, material quality and practical application. Based on these results, we suggest that educational research should develop formats for dissemination and knowledge transfer that are more applicable to teachers in their daily practice.

Australia's higher education sector has seen substantial developments in equity and inclusivity as a result of initiatives which work to improve the numbers and experiences of students from a wide diversity of backgrounds. This practice report shares learnings from a recent national project about the impacts of a wide range of access and equity programs and services, shedding light on effective strategies throughout the student life cycle. The study, known as the Critical Interventions Framework Part 3 (CIF 3), analysed published studies which provide details about the impact of initiatives, highlighting the mechanisms which have enabled students to gain access to and succeed in higher education. The focus here is on a key outcome of the CIF 3, the updated Equity Initiatives Framework (EIF), designed for utility as a quick reference guide to aid equity practitioners and others working to support students in their educational endeavours.

The Capital Area North Doctorate in Educational Leadership (CANDEL) program is committed to educational equity and supports, amongst others, K-12 schoolteachers, administrators, and teacher educators who are committed to bridging the worlds of theory and practice. As teacher educators, we advocate for those in doctoral programs to consider pláticas as a methodology that positions researchers and educators as equal collaborators, each with a wealth of experience to share. The historical roots as well as the five principles of plática methodology (Fierros & Delgado Bernal, 2016) are considered. We discuss our positionality as Latinas and first-generation college graduates, as researchers and as platicadoras engaged in teacher education research. Furthermore, we provide examples of how each has used pláticas methodology to understand the experiences of teachers. We conclude by providing advice for doctoral students interested in using pláticas in their own research.
