In this article, we investigate the structural relaxation of lithium silicate glass during isothermal physical aging by monitoring the temporal evolution of its refractive index and enthalpy following relatively large (10–40 °C) up- and down-jumps in temperature. The Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts function aptly describes the up- and down-jump data when analyzed separately. For temperature down-jumps, the glass exhibits a typical stretched exponential kinetic behavior with the non-exponentiality parameter β < 1, whereas up-jumps show a compressed exponential behavior (β > 1). We analyzed these datasets using the non-exponential and non-linear Tool–Narayanaswamy–Moynihan (TNM) model, aiming to provide a comprehensive description of the primary or α-relaxation of the glass. This model described both up- and down-jump datasets using a single value of β ≤ 1. However, the standard TNM model exhibited a progressively reduced capacity to describe the data for larger temperature jumps, which is likely a manifestation of the temperature dependence of the non-exponentiality or non-linearity of the relaxation process. We hypothesize that the compressed exponential relaxation kinetics observed for temperature up-jumps stems from a nucleation-growth-percolation-based evolution on the dynamically mobile regions within the structure, leading to a self-acceleration of the dynamics. On the other hand, temperature down-jumps result in self-retardation, as the slow-relaxing denser regions percolate in the structure to give rise to a stretched exponential behavior. The Cupressaceae family includes species considered to be medicinal. Their essential oil is used for headaches, colds, cough, and bronchitis. Cedar trees like Chamaecyparis lawsoniana (C. lawsoniana) are commonly found in urban areas. We investigated whether C. lawsoniana exerts some of its effects by modifying airway smooth muscle (ASM) contractility. The leaves of C. lawsoniana (363 g) were pulverized mechanically, and extracts were obtained by successive maceration 1:10 (w:w) with methanol/CHCl3. Guinea pig tracheal rings were contracted with KCl, tetraethylammonium (TEA), histamine (HIS), or carbachol (Cch) in organ baths. In the Cch experiments, tissues were pre-incubated with D-600, an antagonist of L-type voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels (L-VDCC) before the addition of C. lawsoniana. Interestingly, at different concentrations, C. lawsoniana diminished the tracheal contractions induced by KCl, TEA, HIS, and Cch. In ASM cells, C. lawsoniana significantly diminished L-type Ca2+ currents. ASM cells stimulated with Cch produced a transient Ca2+ peak followed by a sustained plateau maintained by L-VDCC and store-operated Ca2+ channels (SOCC). C. lawsoniana almost abolished this last response. These results show that C. lawsoniana, and its active metabolite quercetin, relax the ASM by inhibiting the L-VDCC and SOCC; further studies must be performed to obtain the complete set of metabolites of the extract and study at length their pharmacological properties. Due to strong inter-band transitions, the optical response of copper exhibits a high light absorbance in the visible region of the spectrum, recovering blue wavelengths and reflecting a reddish color. In this contribution, copper is split into subwavelength thin films, which are separated by silicon dioxide dielectric layers to take advantage of photonic bandgaps, which subtract bands from the reflected light and, thus, give rise to a wide range of reflective colors, including blue. Using numerical simulations, we investigate the photonic bandgaps of SiO2/Cu stacks, enabled by Fabry–Pérot transmission resonances, which demonstrate the color tunability of these structures. Mushrooms of the genus Pleurotus have shown nematophagous activity as it produces many chemical compounds and enzymes affecting parasitic nematodes. This study aimed to extract the inhibitory activity of the five strains of the fungus Pleurotus spp. It was evaluated against eggs and larvae of Haemonchus contortus. The extract of P. ostreatus obtained the highest level of inhibition of eggs at 97.6% (1341 μg/mL) followed by P. pulmonarius (EPP) at 81.2% (774 μg/mL). The extract selected for evaluation against larvae was P. pulmonarius, showing no effect for L3 larvae, but for L4 larvae an immobility effect of 56.93% was observed at 900 μg/mL. The protein profile showed the presence of 23 protein bands in the extract. The crude extract of P. pulmonarius showed degradation of tissues both inside the eggs and larvae L1. Metabolites produced by Pleurotus mushrooms can consider using in agriculture sustainable by utilizing in producing of ovicidal and larvicidal against H. contortus instead of chemical compounds. Tritium self-sufficiency in fusion nuclear reactors will be based on the neutron capture by lithium in the so-called breeding blankets of the reactor, a nuclear reaction that will produce helium along with tritium. The low solubility of helium in liquid metals could cause the eventual formation of helium bubbles, which may have a negative impact on the performance of the breeding blanket in a way that has yet to be fully understood. In this work, we provide deep insight into the behavior of lithium and helium mixtures at experimentally operating conditions (800 K and pressures between 1 and 100 bars) using a microscopic model suitable to describe the interactions between helium and lithium at the atomic level, in excellent agreement with available experimental data. The simulations predict the formation of helium bubbles with radii around 10 Å at ambient pressure with surface tension values in the range of 0.6–1.0 N/m. We also report the cohesive energies of helium and the work of formation of the cluster of atoms, as well as a quantitative estimation of the Hildebrand and Kumar cohesion parameters. Giordano Bruno (Nola 1548 – Rome 1600) published in 1582 Candelaio, a comedy that anticipates the core arguments he developed in the six dialogs written in volgare during the philosopher's stay in England (1583–1585). In the comedy, the term candelaio (candlebearer) is deployed not only as a trope for light and illumination, but also as a slang designation for sodomite. Thus, sexual dissident Bonifacio, the tragicomic personage to which the title refers, brings to light the mostly unavowed or denigrated, albeit ineradicable complexities of every sexual individuality. In this framework, the personality, lifestyle, and views of disruptive Bonifacio/Candelaio serve as narrative support for a critical stance aiming at undoing the validity claims of the man/woman dichotomy. At the antipodes of the finitization of sexuality fostered by Christian creationism, Bruno's sexual approach is framed within a conception of "natura naturante," the all-pervasive, inexhaustible and animating power, which enables the emergence of utterly diversified beings throughout the infinitude of the existing worlds. Having dismantled the epistemic pretentions of sexual binarity and its possible closed supplementations, Bruno effectively frees Bonifacio's sexual heteroclisis from the stigma of unnaturalness. Notwithstanding the trailblazing traits of Bruno's sexual thought and its ontological framework, Brunian scholarship to the present has ignored that the philosopher from Nola posed the arguably most profound and consistent challenge to binary sexuality and its finite suppletions in pre-Darwinian Modernity. In view of the critiques of patriarchy and anti-feminism that began to develop at the turn to the twentieth century, it is striking that no systematic effort has been undertaken to relate Bruno's principled reversion of the form/matter hierarchy to his advocacy for the axiological restauration of femaleness in the masculinist-centered culture of the West. In accordance with Bruno's explicit design to "turn upside down the reversed world," his philosophy seeks to reveal the endless profusion of sexual forms not as creations of an omnipotent paternal figure, but as emergences from an inexhaustible source, which he signally terms "the maternal womb of Nature." Introduction: Emerging adulthood has been described as a period of risk for body weight gain. Several studies have indicated that the positive or negative health behaviors established during this stage, tend to prevail the rest of life. However, there are discrepancies in published studies on weight change in freshmen and there are disagreements on weight gain predictors. The present study reviewed the literature with the aim of knowing the eating behaviors associated with weight gain in university students. Method: A systematic search was conducted in three databases according to the PRISMA method during the months of February to November 2020. Results: 20 articles were included in the review. The main behaviors associated with weight gain were the consumption of sugary drinks, alcohol consumption, low consumption of vegetables and fruits, frequent self-consumption, eating unhealthy and low levels of food regulation. How do capital controls and banking concentration affect economic development? This paper develops a general equilibrium model to study these important issues. To do so, we construct a framework with heterogeneous agents and imperfectly competitive financial intermediaries who help depositors manage liquidity risk. Importantly, higher levels of concentration raise the cost of domestic borrowing which increase the reliance on international capital markets. Objectives: Early colonial documents from central Mesoamerica detail raising and planting of European livestock and crops alongside native ones. The extent to which Indigenous people, especially of the rural commoner class, consumed newly introduced foods is less known. This gap in knowledge is addressed through stable isotope analysis and comparison to published archaeological botanical, human, and faunal data. Materials and Methods: Stable isotope analysis of bone collagen and bioapatite is applied to 74 skeletal samples of Indigenous human remains representing Colonial period individuals from El Japón—a farming hamlet in the Xochimilco area—to provide insight into long‐term individual dietary practices in the context of a rapidly transforming Mesoamerican world. Results: Carbon isotope ratios in collagen (δ13Ccollagen) average −8.10/00 VPDB (SD 0.55), while δ15N averages 8.90/00 AIR (SD 0.50). δ13Cbioapatite averages −2.90/00 VPDB (SD 0.60). Modest increase in carbon isotopic diversity is observed among more recent males from El Japón when compared to earlier males and females. Discussion: Based on the isotopic results, it is estimated that the individuals of El Japón consumed maize or other C4 plants as a central source of carbohydrates. Dietary protein was largely supplied through domestic maize‐fed fauna but potentially supplemented by wild terrestrial and aquatic fauna and fowl. Similarity in skeletal isotopic composition between precontact Mesoamericans from other sites and El Japón individuals of both earlier and later stratigraphy is interpreted as continuity in local diets and foodways despite potentially available European alternatives. Colonial taxation demands on preexisting agricultural regimes may have incentivized maize production, thus indirectly contributing to the maize‐centered aspect of local foodways. Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a rare autoimmune disease of the central nervous system characterized by severe attacks of optic neuritis, myelitis, and/or area postrema. Advances in understanding the pathophysiology of NMOSD have led to improved diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. There has been a notable increase in research efforts worldwide, including in Latin America (LATAM). In recent years, LATAM has witnessed a surge in research on NMOSD, resulting in a growing body of evidence on various aspects such as epidemiology, clinical manifestations, paraclinical features (including AQP4-IgG [Aquaporin-4-immunoglobulin G] and imaging), acute and long-term treatment strategies, as well as accessibility to diagnostic tests. This narrative review aims to present the most relevant findings from different NMOSD cohorts in LATAM, providing a comprehensive overview of the current understanding of the disease in the region, while considering its unique characteristics and challenges. A wide spectrum of tumors may affect the periungual spaces of the digits. Superficial acral fibromyxoma (SAF) is a rare, benign soft tissue tumor with diverse clinical presentations. We present a case of a 55‐year‐old woman with a 2‐year history of a solitary periungual tumor on the left thumb, subjected to multiple episodes of trauma. Initially suspected to be a periungual squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) based on clinical and dermoscopic features, the tumor was confirmed to be a CD34− SAF through histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Although CD34 immunoreactivity is common in SAF, one‐third of these tumors, including this case, do not stain for this marker. Periungual SCC considered a “great mimicker of nail tumors,” may resemble other benign nail tumors such as SAF. The patient underwent complete surgical excision with primary closure, resulting in no recurrence after 1 year. This case highlights SAF as an underrecognized benign entity that may manifest with features suspicious of malignancy, potentially leading to unnecessarily aggressive interventions. Recognizing SAF through accurate biopsy techniques and thorough histopathologic evaluation, even in the absence of CD34 reactivity, is crucial for appropriate treatment and preservation of hand function and appearance. BACKGROUND: Potato varieties have diverse biophysical characteristics, so it is important for breeders to have the capacity to choose those that meet the preferences of end users, such as mealiness, firmness, and taste, among others. Combining user preferences with descriptive information regarding the sensory characteristics of boiled potatoes can contribute to the improvement of consumer‐driven varieties. This study aimed to factor in the preferences of end users to improve the prospects for varietal acceptance, adoption, and discrimination among genotypes in potato breeding. RESULTS: The priority quality traits (traits that play the most significant roles in acceptance and adoption) of the boiled potatoes were determined by evaluating gender and livelihood using the G+ tool. The G+ tool is designed to assess gender impact on roots, tubers and bananas (RTB) traits by serving as a validation check to reflect on important gender‐based issues in agricultural food systems in order to reduce harm and promote positive impact. Potato genotypes were differentiated by penetration (textural parameters as measured by standard texture probe) and the procedure was repeatable, as there was no significant difference between the cooking replicates at 40 min of cooking. Instrument‐based texture parameters, such as penetration peak force (hardness/firmness) and area (area under the curve, which represents energy needed to penetrate) of boiled potato tubers were significantly associated with sensory attributes such as fracturability and hardness in the mouth. An attempt to differentiate genotypes using near‐infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) revealed that the average results observed for the calibration for yellow color (r2 = 0.70), homogeneity of color (r2 = 0.48), moisture in mass (r2 = 0.40), and uniformity of texture (r2 = 0.56) suggested that these parameters could be used for initial breeding screening purposes. CONCLUSIONS: The preferred traits of the boiled potato can be integrated into the potato‐breeding program/product profile. Near‐infrared spectroscopy shows strong potential to predict potato color and the ability of NIRS models to predict some texture attributes is also promising. © 2023 The Authors. In mammalian females, quiescent primordial follicles serve as the ovarian reserve and sustain normal ovarian function and egg production via folliculogenesis. The loss of primordial follicles causes ovarian aging. Cellular senescence, characterized by cell cycle arrest and production of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), is associated with tissue aging. In the present study, we report that some quiescent primary oocytes in primordial follicles become senescent in adult mouse ovaries. The senescent primary oocytes share senescence markers characterized in senescent somatic cells. The senescent primary oocytes were observed in young adult mouse ovaries, remained at approximately 15% of the total primary oocytes during ovarian aging from 6 to 12 months, and accumulated in aged ovaries. Administration of a senolytic drug ABT263 to 3-month-old mice reduced the percentage of senescent primary oocytes and the transcription of the SASP factors in the ovary, in addition, led to increased numbers of primordial and total follicles and a higher rate of oocyte maturation. Our study provides experimental evidence that primary oocytes, a germline cell type that is arrested in meiosis, become senescent in adult mouse ovaries and that senescent cell clearance reduced primordial follicle loss and mitigated ovarian aging phenotypes. Students with disabilities face additional challenges in maintaining a sense of belonging at university, due to structural barriers. An emergent theoretical model has proposed that self-advocacy, social relationships and mastery of the student role may be important factors for sense of belonging among students with disabilities. However, the utility of this model is yet to be quantitatively tested. The present study thus aimed to investigate how these variables may predict sense of belonging in students with disabilities. Further, given how previous literature has emphasised the importance of university accessibility in predicting belonging amongst students with disabilities, we also included perceptions of accessibility as a predictor variable. In a sample of 84 UK undergraduates who self-identified as having a disability, we found that perceptions of accessibility significantly positively predicted feelings of belonging at university, such that students who felt their university campus and course was more accessible felt stronger feelings of belongingness. However, counter to our hypotheses, measures of self-advocacy, social relationships and mastery of the student role did not significantly predict belonging. Recommendations for Page 2 of 2 future research are discussed, including measures to improve accessibility and belonging at university and the need for a generalisable measurement of accessibility amongst students with disability. Introduction: Passive exercise involves limb movement via an external force and is an intervention providing an immediate postexercise executive function (EF) benefit. It is, however, unknown whether EF is improved simultaneous with passive exercise--a salient question given the advent of passive (and active) exercise workstations designed to enhance productivity and wellbeing for individuals engaged in sedentary occupations. Methods: Here, participants (N = 23) completed separate 20-min conditions involving active (i.e., via volitional muscle activation) and passive (i.e., via mechanically driven cycle ergometer) cycle ergometry and a non-exercise control condition. EF was assessed prior to (i.e., preintervention), simultaneous with, and immediately after (post-intervention) each condition via the antipointing task. Antipointing involves a goal-directed limb movement mirror-symmetrical to a target and is an ideal tool for the current investigation given that the task is mediated via EF inhibitory control networks that show response-dependent changes following a single bout of exercise. Results and discussion: Results showed that passive exercise produced a simultaneous and post-intervention reduction in antipointing reaction time (RT), whereas active exercise selectively produced a post-intervention--but not simultaneous--RT reduction. Thus, passive and active exercise elicited a postexercise EF benefit; however, only passive exercise produced a simultaneous benefit. That passive--but not active--exercise produced a simultaneous benefit may reflect that the intervention provides the necessary physiological or psychological changes to elicit improved EF efficiency without the associated dual-task cost(s) of volitional muscle activity. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the in vivo medial and lateral joint laxities across various total knee arthroplasty (TKA) alignment categories correlated to (1) hip–knee–ankle angle, (2) proximal tibial angle and (3) distal femoral angle in a consecutive group of patients undergoing robotic‐assisted TKA. Methods: Using ligament tensions acquired during 805 robotic‐assisted TKA with a dynamic ligament tensor under a load of 70–90 N, the relationship between medial and lateral collateral ligament laxity and overall limb alignment was established. Only knees with neutral or mechanical varus alignment were included and divided into five groups: neutral (0°–3°), varus 3°–5°, varus 6°–9°, varus 10°–13° and varus ≥14°. Groups were further subdivided by the intraoperative medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) and lateral distal femoral angle (LDFA). The distraction of the medial and lateral sides was compared across the various alignments using an analysis of variance. Results: The ability to distract the medial collateral ligament in extension and flexion was proportional to the degree of varus deformity, increasing from 4.0 ± 2.3 mm in the neutral group to 8.7 ± 3.2 mm in the varus ≥14° group (p < 0.0001). On the lateral side, the distraction of the lateral collateral ligament decreased in both extension (2.2 ± 2.4 vs. 1.2 ± 2.7, p < 0.0001) and flexion (2.8 ± 2.8 to 1.7 ± 3.0, p < 0.0001) with increasing native varus deformity. MPTA and LDFA had similar effects, where increasing MPTA varus and LDFA valgus increased medial distractibility in extension and flexion. There was significant variability of the stretch of the ligaments within and across all alignment categories, in which the standard deviation of the groups ranged from 2.0 to 3.0 mm. Conclusion: This study demonstrates increased medial ligament distractibility with increasing varus deformity. However, there was significant variability in ligamentous laxity within various limb alignment categories suggesting the anatomy and soft tissue identity of the knee is complex and highly variable. Background: Trigeminal schwannoma is a rare type of tumor that arises from the Schwann cells of the trigeminal nerve. Method: We present a case of a patient with a giant V2 trigeminal schwannoma with painful swelling in the left maxilla. A complete resection using a combined open maxillectomy and endoscopic endonasal approach was performed. Conclusion: This case highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to perform a combined open and endoscopic approach for safe resection while preserving adequate speech and swallowing. We examined the latest decade of Australian sociology PhD completions for differences in the number and quality of research outputs students published during doctoral enrolment. There was no evidence of a statistically significant difference between Go8 PhD students and their non-Go8 PhD counterparts in terms of either the quantity of research publications achieved, or the quality of these publications as measured by high-impact journals. There was also insufficient evidence statistically to conclude that Go8 men and Go8 women differed from one another, or that non-Go8 men and non-Go8 women differed from one another in overall quantity of outputs and publishing in high-impact journals. However, publishing success of men and women, when combined, regardless of whether they were at elite Go8 or non-Go8 institutions, showed gender had a marginally significant effect on publication productivity, men outperforming women, in both publication counts and in publishing in high-impact journals. Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate a person‐centred model of clinical supervision to enhance person‐centredness. Design: Experimental, quantitative. Methods: One hundred and three New Graduates were supported to reflect through a person‐centred lens (July–December 2020). Evaluation was undertaken at 6 months using: the Manchester Clinical Supervision Scale‐26 (effectiveness of supervision) and the Person‐centred Practice Inventory (measures attributes of the nurse/midwife, the care environment and person‐centred processes). Due to participation difficulties, scores were calculated by attendance rates using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Regular attendees scored higher on the supervision's effectiveness; however, this did not reach efficacy. 'Finding time' to attend contributed to low scores. Supervision scored well on its supportive function when attended. Many New Graduates perceived a decline in their care environment. Attendance aside, New Graduates averaged an increased in their person‐centred attributes and processes. Greater participation was found in those who scored higher at baseline on their person‐centred attributes and processes, and this higher scoring continued at 6 months than those who attended less. Conclusion: New Graduates who perceive themselves as person‐centred and reflective at baseline are more likely to attend a person‐centred clinical supervision and score higher at 6 months than those who attended less often. New Graduates found support within supervision during challenging times. Implications for Practice for Professional and/or Patient Care: For successful implementation of Person‐centred Clinical Supervision, New Graduates need support to attend, as attendance supports them to begin seeing value in the process. Impact: This intervention kept person‐centred practice at the forefront of New Graduates reflection, in a time of extreme change. The research has implications for nursing and midwifery management with the imperative to deliver person‐centred care and create the person‐centred cultures for staff to feel supported and empowered. Legg–Calve–Perthes disease (LCPD) is an idiopathic avascular necrosis of the pediatric femoral head. Bone remodeling and bone structural genes have the potential to contribute to the progression of LCPD when there is disequilibrium between bone resorption and bone formation. A case–control study was performed to search for associations of several common polymorphisms in the genes Receptor Activator for Nuclear Factor κappa B (RANK), Receptor Activator for Nuclear Factor κappa B Ligand (RANKL), osteoprotegerin (OPG), interleukin (IL)-6, and type 1 collagen (COL1A1) with LCPD susceptibility in Mexican children. A total of 23 children with LCPD and 46 healthy controls were genotyped for seven polymorphisms (rs3018362, rs12585014, rs2073618, rs1800795, rs1800796, rs1800012, and rs2586498) in the RANK, RANKL, OPG, IL-6, and COL1A1 genes by real-time polymerase chain reaction with TaqMan probes. The variant allele (C) of IL-6 rs1800795 was associated with increased risk of LCPD (odds ratio [OR]: 3.8, 95% confidence interval [CI]: [1.08–13.54], p = 0.033), adjusting data by body mass index (BMI) and coagulation factor V (FV), the association with increased risk remained (OR: 4.9, 95% CI: [1.14–21.04], p = 0.025). The OPG polymorphism rs2073618, specifically GC-GG carriers, was associated with a more than fourfold increased risk of developing LCPD (OR: 4.34, 95% CI: [1.04–18.12], p = 0.033) when data were adjusted by BMI-FV. There was no significant association between RANK rs3018362, RANKL rs12585014, IL-6 rs1800796, COL1A1 rs1800012, and rs2586498 polymorphisms and LCPD in a sample of Mexican children. The rs1800975 and rs2037618 polymorphisms in the IL-6 and OPG genes, respectively, are informative markers of increased risk of LCPD in Mexican children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Type 2 diabetes (DM2) is an increasingly prevalent disease that challenges tuberculosis (TB) control strategies worldwide. It is significant that DM2 patients with poor glycemic control (PDM2) are prone to developing tuberculosis. Furthermore, elucidating the molecular mechanisms that govern this susceptibility is imperative to address this problem. Therefore, a pilot transcriptomic study was performed. Human blood samples from healthy controls (CTRL, HbA1c < 6.5%), tuberculosis (TB), comorbidity TB-DM2, DM2 (HbA1c 6.5–8.9%), and PDM2 (HbA1c > 10%) groups (n = 4 each) were analyzed by differential expression using microarrays. We use a network strategy to identify potential molecular patterns linking the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) specific for TB-DM2 and PDM2 (p-value < 0.05, fold change > 2). We define OSM, PRKCD, and SOCS3 as key regulatory genes (KRGs) that modulate the immune system and related pathways. RT-qPCR assays confirmed upregulation of OSM, PRKCD, and SOCS3 genes (p < 0.05) in TB-DM2 patients (n = 18) compared to CTRL, DM2, PDM2, or TB groups (n = 17, 19, 15, and 9, respectively). Furthermore, OSM, PRKCD, and SOCS3 were associated with PDM2 susceptibility pathways toward TB-DM2 and formed a putative protein–protein interaction confirmed in STRING. Our results reveal potential molecular patterns where OSM, PRKCD, and SOCS3 are KRGs underlying the compromised immune response and susceptibility of patients with PDM2 to develop tuberculosis. Therefore, this work paved the way for fundamental research of new molecular targets in TB-DM2. Addressing their cellular implications, and the impact on the diagnosis, treatment, and clinical management of TB-DM2 could help improve the strategy to end tuberculosis for this vulnerable population. A combination of density measurement, differential scanning calorimetry, refractometry, and Raman and 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is employed to characterize the evolution of the structure and physical properties of lithium disilicate (Li2Si2O5) and lead metasilicate (PbSiO3) glasses during physical aging. Both glasses display marked increase in density, enthalpy recovery, and refractive index following a temperature down‐jump near their glass transition regions. The collective analysis of Raman and NMR spectra reveals that the aging‐induced structural relaxation in these silicate networks involves a significant disproportionation of Q‐species as well as their spatial clustering. Background: In Uganda, village health workers (VHWs) manage childhood illness under the integrated community case management (iCCM) strategy. Care is provided for malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhoea in a community setting. Currently, there is limited evidence on the cost-effectiveness of iCCM in comparison to health facility-based management for childhood illnesses. This study examined the cost-effectiveness of the management of childhood illness using the VHW-led iCCM against health facility-based services in rural south-western Uganda. Methods: Data on the costs and effectiveness of VHW-led iCCM versus health facility-based services for the management of childhood illness was collected in one sub-county in rural southwestern Uganda. Costing was performed using the ingredients approach. Effectiveness was measured as the number of under-five children appropriately treated. The Incremental Cost-Effectiveness Ratio (ICER) was calculated from the provider perspective. Results: Based on the decision model for this study, the cost for 100 children treated was US$628.27 under the VHW led iCCM and US$87.19 for the health facility based services, while the effectiveness was 77 and 71 children treated for VHW led iCCM and health facility-based services, respectively. An ICER of US$6.67 per under five-year child treated appropriately for malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea was derived for the provider perspective. Conclusion: The health facility based services are less costly when compared to the VHW led iCCM per child treated appropriately. The VHW led iCCM was however more effective with regard to the number of children treated appropriately for malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea. Considering the public health expenditure per capita for Uganda as the willingness to pay threshold, VHW led iCCM is a cost-effective strategy. Background: Each year, 3,800 cases of snakebite envenomation are reported in Mexico, resulting in 35 fatalities. The only scientifically validated treatment for snakebites in Mexico is the use of antivenoms. Currently, two antivenoms are available in the market, with one in the developmental phase. These antivenoms, produced in horses, consist of F(ab')2 fragments generated using venoms from various species as immunogens. While previous studies primarily focused on neutralizing the venom of the Crotalus species, our study aims to assess the neutralization capacity of different antivenom batches against pit vipers from various genera in Mexico. Methodology: We conducted various biological and biochemical tests to characterize the venoms. Additionally, we performed neutralization tests using all three antivenoms to evaluate their effectiveness against lethal activity and their ability to neutralize proteolytic and fibrinogenolytic activities. Results: Our results reveal significant differences in protein content and neutralizing capacity among different antivenoms and even between different batches of the same product. Notably, the venom of Crotalus atrox is poorly neutralized by all evaluated batches despite being the primary cause of envenomation in the country's northern region. Furthermore, even at the highest tested concentrations, no antivenom could neutralize the lethality of Metlapilcoatlus nummifer and Porthidium yucatanicum venoms. These findings highlight crucial areas for improving existing antivenoms and developing new products. Conclusion: Our research reveals variations in protein content and neutralizing potency among antivenoms, emphasizing the need for consistency in venom characteristics as immunogens. While Birmex neutralizes more LD50 per vial, Antivipmyn excels in specific neutralization. The inability of antivenoms to neutralize certain venoms, especially M. nummifer and P. yucatanicum, highlights crucial improvement opportunities, given the medical significance of these species. In the educational field, the application of neurodidactic strategies focused on emotions is presented as an innovative and effective approach to promote emotional development in students from 8 to 10 years old in the Cumana Educational Unit belonging to the Fifth year of basic education. These strategies are designed to stimulate emotional intelligence through guided practice and reflective feedback, with the aim of promoting the acquisition of essential emotional competencies. By integrating techniques that focus attention on emotions and promote emotional self-regulation, deeper and more meaningful learning is facilitated, preparing children to effectively manage their emotions in the current educational context. The children in this educational center exhibit negative behaviors, such as fights between classmates and lack of concentration in the activities directed by the teacher, among other challenges. These problems were the main reason that motivated this investigative study to be carried out. In this study, a mixed methodology was used that included diagnostic tests, interviews and observations to evaluate the emotional progress of students and design specific emotional modulation strategies. The results confirm that there is a lack of coexistence skills due to deficiencies in education. emotional. In response, it is suggested to develop a guide to educational strategies that includes activities aimed at teachers responsible for children's learning. The evaluation of the structural integrity of a vertical cask that is used for spent nuclear fuel dry storage is reported. The cask diameter and height are 3.566 m (140 in.) and 5.28 m (207.75 in.), respectively. The analysis focuses on such a cask being impacted by a commercial airplane. The dry storage container standards, which are under evaluation and approval by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, are considered. The storage container inner basket is made of a stainless steel plate cylinder. It is located within an outer shell. The last one is manufactured with concrete and has internal and external steel liners. The commercial airplane considered in this analysis has a length of 40.39 m (132 ft, 6 in.). Its wingspan and height are 35.23 m (115 ft, 7 in.) and 11.98 m (39 ft, 4 in.), respectively. Its take-off weight is 81 090 kg (178 773 lb). An explicit analysis with the finite element method is carried out. The impact angles were 0, 30, 45, and 60 deg with respect to the horizontal. The mesh of the domain has 1 104 229 hexahedral elements and 1 516 156 nodes. Initially, all the structures are considered without restrictions and free of stresses. The vertical container for dry storage is at rest on a rigid concrete base. The aircraft velocity is 234 m/s or 842 km/h (523 mph). The impact event is simulated in an interval of 0.03 s. The maximum principal stress fields show that there are points at the lid of the container that are above the elastic limit and the ultimate strength. Introduction. Paradoxical embolism is a thrombotic event originating in the venous circulation, which manifests as arterial embolism through an anatomical cardiac or pulmonary defect. It is mainly associated with stroke, also presenting as acute myocardial infarction, renal infarction, and other ischemic events. Clinical case. A 47-year-old patient was admitted due to abdominal pain, which required emergency surgical management, finding significant intestinal ischemia. Additional studies found protein S deficiency and evidence of a patent foramen ovale. Discussion. Arterial thrombosis is known as unusual thrombosis; this situation requires to rule out associated thrombophilia or other prothrombotic diseases. Protein S deficiency is a rare thrombophilia, which in adults causes venous thrombosis. In the presence of anatomical defects, such as a patent foramen ovale, it can progress to arterial embolism, presenting a picture of paradoxical embolism. The study work of these patients requires imaging that demonstrates the aforementioned defect, as well as the possible origin of the emboli. Management is based on full anticoagulation, treatment of existing thrombotic manifestations, and management of the anatomical defect. Conclusions. Paradoxical embolism should be suspected in case of unusual thrombosis. It requires exhaustive studies based on imaging, and management should consist of anticoagulation and closure of the defect. We introduce a method to enforce some symmetries starting from a trial wave-function prepared on quantum computers that might not respect these symmetries. The technique eliminates the necessity for performing the projection on the quantum computer itself. Instead, this task is conducted as a post-processing step on the system's "Classical Shadow". Illustrations of the approach are given for the parity, particle number, and spin projectors that are of particular interest in interacting many-body systems. We compare the method with another classical post-processing technique based on direct measurements of the quantum register. We show that the present scheme can be competitive to predict observables on symmetry-restored states once optimization through derandomization is employed. Implementing approaches based on process mining in inter-organizational collaboration environments presents challenges related to the granularity of event logs, the privacy and autonomy of business processes, and the alignment of event data generated in inter-organizational business process (IOBP) execution. Therefore, this paper proposes a complete and modular data-driven approach that implements natural language processing techniques, text similarity, and process mining techniques (discovery and conformance checking) through a set of methods and formal rules that enable analysis of the data contained in the event logs and the intra-organizational process models of the participants in the collaboration, to identify patterns that allow the discovery of the process choreography. The approach enables merging the event logs of the inter-organizational collaboration participants from the identified message interactions, enabling the automatic construction of an IOBP model. The proposed approach was evaluated using four real-life and two artificial event logs. In discovering the choreography process, average values of 0.86, 0.89, and 0.86 were obtained for relationship precision, relation recall, and relationship F-score metrics. In evaluating the quality of the built IOBP models, values of 0.95 and 1.00 were achieved for the precision and recall metrics, respectively. The performance obtained in the different scenarios is encouraging, demonstrating the ability of the approach to discover the process choreography and the construction of business process models in inter-organizational environments. This study binder jets a tungsten carbide‐nickel (WC‐Ni) sintered‐agglomerated composite powder, and postprocesses the preforms using an initial sintering step followed by a hot isostatic pressing (HIP) step. The effects of sintering temperatures, sintering durations, and HIP temperatures on notable properties (e.g., porosity, microstructure, hardness, and oxidation behavior) are quantified. The highest average relative density produced in this study was 96.8%, and volumetric shrinkage of these coupons was about 64%. Microstructural characterization shows that the WC grains are homogenously distributed throughout the nickel matrix and grow to an average diameter of 1.6 μm${\mathrm{\mu m}}$ (a 60% increase) during processing. X‐ray diffraction patterns indicate that no unwanted products were formed. Processed coupons achieved a maximum hardness of 54 Rockwell C, limited by their internal porosity. Oxidation tests result in the production of WO3 and NiWO4 at temperatures above 600°C. Methodologies and results from this study can be leveraged to additively manufacture highly dense, geometrically complex WC‐Ni parts with small carbide grains, low nickel content, desirable microstructure, and suitable functional properties. Efficient structural optimization remains integral in advancing lightweight structures, particularly concerning the mitigation of environmental impact in air transportation systems. Varying levels of detail prove useful for different applications and design phases. The lightworks framework presents a modular approach, for the consideration of individual design parameterizations and structural solvers for the numerical optimization of thin-walled structures. The framework provides the combination of lightweight fibre composite design and the incorporation of stiffeners for a gradient-based optimization process. Therefore, an analytical stiffener formulation is implemented in combination with different continuous composite material parameterizations. This approach allows the analysis of local buckling modes, as well as the consideration of load redistribution between stringer and skin. The flexibility achieved in this way allows a tailored configuration of the optimization problem to the required level of complexity. A verification of the framework's implementation is carried out using established literature results of a simplified unstiffened wing box structure, where a very good agreement is shown. The accessibility of solvers with different fidelity through a generic solver interface is demonstrated. Furthermore, the usage of the implemented continuous composite parameterizations as design variables is compared in terms of computational performance and mass, providing different advantages and disadvantages. Post-event rumination, the extent to which one engages in persistent, detailed, and negative thinking following social situations, serves as a risk process in the pathophysiology of social anxiety. Although a substantial body of research has assessed post-event rumination and social anxiety, this literature has produced inconsistent results. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine whether the magnitude of the association between post-event rumination and social anxiety varied as a function of questionnaire and/or task utilized. We included all studies reporting a correlation between post-event rumination and social anxiety symptomatology. Fisher's z correlation coefficients were calculated through random-effect meta-analyses. Results indicated a moderate association between post-event rumination and social anxiety symptomatology (r = 0.45, p < 0.001, 95%CI [0.40–0.50]). Subgroup meta-analyses indicated that the type of questionnaire used to assess post-event rumination (Q = 44.36, df = 3, p < 0.001) and social anxiety (Q = 26.44, df = 8, p < 0.001), as well as the task conducted prior to assessing post-event rumination (Q = 14.31, df = 2, p < 0.001), influenced the effect size. This study demonstrates a moderate relation between post-event rumination and social anxiety across the anxiety spectrum, illustrating the importance of treatments specifically targeting post-event rumination. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to describe trends and outcomes for patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) in the Netherlands. METHODS The Netherlands Heart Registration database was used to report the number and outcomes of isolated, primary SAVR procedures performed from 2007 to 2018 in adult patients. RESULTS A total of 17 142 procedures were included, of which 77.9% were performed using a biological prosthesis and 21.0% with a mechanical prosthesis. Median logistic EuroSCORE I decreased from 4.6 [interquartile range (IQR) 2.4–7.7] to 4.0 (IQR 2.6–6.0). The 120-day mortality decreased from 3.3% in 2007 to 0.7% in 2018. The median duration of follow-up was 76 months (IQR 53–111). Ten-year survival, when adjusted for age, EuroSCORE I and body surface area, was 72.4%, and adjusted 10-year freedom from reinvervention was 98.1%. Additional analysis for patients under the age of 60 showed no difference between patients treated with a biological or mechanical prosthesis in adjusted 10-year survival, 89.7% vs 91.9±%, respectively (P  = 0.25), but a significant difference in adjusted 10-year freedom from reintervention, 90.0±% vs 95.9%, respectively (P  < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Between 2007 and 2018, age and risk profile of patients undergoing SAVR decreased, especially for patients treated with a biological prosthesis. The 120-day mortality decreased over time. Background Evidence-based clinical susceptibility breakpoints have been lacking for antimicrobial agents used for diphtheria. Objectives We aimed to evaluate broth microdilution and disc diffusion methods and create a dataset of MIC values and inhibition zone diameters (ZDs) from which breakpoints could be determined. Methods We included 400 recent clinical isolates equally distributed by species (Corynebacterium diphtheriae and Corynebacterium ulcerans) and by national surveillance programmes (France and Germany). Non-duplicate toxigenic and non-toxigenic isolates were chosen to enable the inclusion of a diversity of susceptibility levels for the 13 agents tested. Broth microdilution and disc diffusion, using EUCAST methodology for fastidious organisms, were used. Results The distributions of MIC and ZD values were largely in agreement among methods and countries. Breakpoints to allow categorization of WT isolates as susceptible, i.e. susceptible (S) or susceptible, increased exposure (I) were determined for 12 agents. The data supported a breakpoint for benzylpenicillin and amoxicillin of resistant (R) > 1 mg/L since WT isolates were inhibited by 1 mg/L or less. WT isolates were categorized as I (S ≤ 0.001 mg/L) for benzylpenicillin, emphasizing the need for increased exposure, and S (S ≤ 1 mg/L) for amoxicillin. Erythromycin breakpoints were set at S ≤ 0.06 mg/L and R > 0.06 mg/L. The corresponding ZD breakpoints were determined for all agents except amoxicillin, for which categorization was based on benzylpenicillin results. Conclusions This work provided a large set of antimicrobial susceptibility data for C. diphtheriae and C. ulcerans , using a harmonized methodology. Rogue waves are an intriguing nonlinear phenomenon arising across different scales, ranging from ocean waves through optics to Bose–Einstein condensates. We describe the emergence of rogue wave-like dynamics in a reaction-diffusion system that arise as a result of a subcritical Turing instability. This state is present in a regime where all time-independent states are unstable and consists of intermittent excitation of spatially localized spikes, followed by collapse to an unstable state and subsequent regrowth. Pediatric colorectal cancer, comprising just 1% of childhood cancers, has surged among young individuals, underscoring its significant health impact. Diagnostic challenges arise from atypical presentation and nonspecific symptoms in 90% of cases, leading to delayed detection in 19%. Methods A 2-year retrospective study of pediatric colorectal carcinoma cases was conducted across a specialized surgical pediatric center. Data were gathered, including age, symptoms, diagnostics, treatments, and outcomes. Results Six colorectal carcinoma cases (median age, 16) were documented, mainly in males (66%). Predominant histological types included mucinous adenocarcinoma and signet ring cell carcinoma. Metastasis was present in all cases, with symptoms including hematochezia (83%), abdominal pain (100%), weight loss (66%), and anemia (100%). Diagnosis often faced misidentification, fostering disease progression and metastasis. Various diagnostic and treatment modalities were employed, including surgery and neo-adjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy. Conclusion Swift detection and intervention for pediatric colorectal carcinoma are pivotal. Efficient diagnostics and heightened awareness among medical professionals and the public are imperative. Early surgical intervention remains a cornerstone, especially for patients with pertinent family histories and characteristic symptoms. Tailored guidelines for pediatric patients are needed to enhance outcomes and survival. The heat of mixing of some petrological relevant substitutions (i.e., Mg-Al, Si-Al, Mg-Ti, Mg-Ca, and Mg-Fe) was investigated systematically in silicates, titanates, tungstates, carbonates, oxides, hydroxides, and sulphates by density functional theory calculations (e.g., melilite, chlorite, biotite, brucite, cordierite, amphibole, talc, pseudobrookite, pyroxene, olivine, wadsleyite, ilmenite, MgWO4, ringwoodite (spinel), perovskite, pyrope-grossular, magnesite-calcite, MgO-CaO, anhydrous and different hydrated MgSO4). A specific substitution is characterised by different microscopic interaction energies in different minerals, e.g., the octahedral Mg-Al exchange on a single crystallographic site in pyroxene has a microscopic interaction energy that is more than twice compared to that in biotite. A comparative investigation of the heat of mixing using microscopic interaction energies on a single crystallographic site has the advantage that they are not influenced by cation ordering. They could be successfully correlated with the stiffnesses of the minerals, which in turn were scaled to the oxygen packing fraction, a parameter that is easily available for poorly investigated minerals. With this information, the interaction energies of a certain substitution can be transferred from minerals where they are well-known to mineral groups where they are less- or unknown. Using the cross-site terms and the microscopic interaction energies, the macroscopic interaction energies of the coupled substitution, e.g., Mg + Si = Al + Al, of biotite and pyroxene were calculated, which are, however, affected by cation ordering and different degrees of local charge balance, for which appropriate models are necessary. Background: Although economic evaluations (EEs) have been increasingly applied to medical devices, little discussion has been conducted on how the different health realities of specific populations may impact the application of methods and the ensuing results. This is particularly relevant for pediatric populations, as most EEs on devices are conducted in adults, with specific aspects related to the uniqueness of child health often being overlooked. This study provides a review of the published EEs on devices used in paediatrics, assessing the quality of reporting, and summarising methodological challenges. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed to identify peer-reviewed publications on the economic value of devices used in paediatrics in the form of full EEs (comparing both costs and consequences of two or more devices). After the removal of duplicates, article titles and abstracts were screened. The remaining full-text articles were retrieved and assessed for inclusion. In-vitro diagnostic devices were not considered in this review. Study descriptive and methodological characteristics were extracted using a structured template. The Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS) 2022 checklist was used to assess the quality of reporting. A narrative synthesis of the results was conducted followed by a critical discussion on the main challenges found in the literature. Results: 39 full EEs were eligible for review. Most studies were conducted in high-income countries (67%) and focused on high-risk therapeutic devices (72%). Studies comprised 25 cost-utility analyses, 13 cost-effectiveness analyses and 1 cost-benefit analysis. Most of the studies considered a lifetime horizon (41%) and a health system perspective (36%). Compliance with the CHEERS 2022 items varied among the studies. Conclusions: Despite the scant body of evidence on EEs focusing on devices in paediatrics results highlight the need to improve the quality of reporting and advance methods that can explicitly incorporate the multiple impacts related to the use of devices with distinct characteristics, as well as consider specific child health realities. We previously showed that SerpinE2 and the serine protease HtrA1 modulate fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling in germ layer specification and head-to-tail development of Xenopus embryos. Here, we present an extracellular proteolytic mechanism involving this serpin-protease system in the developing neural crest (NC). Knockdown of SerpinE2 by injected antisense morpholino oligonucleotides did not affect the specification of NC progenitors but instead inhibited the migration of NC cells, causing defects in dorsal fin, melanocyte, and craniofacial cartilage formation. Similarly, overexpression of the HtrA1 protease impaired NC cell migration and the formation of NC-derived structures. The phenotype of SerpinE2 knockdown was overcome by concomitant downregulation of HtrA1, indicating that SerpinE2 stimulates NC migration by inhibiting endogenous HtrA1 activity. SerpinE2 binds to HtrA1, and the HtrA1 protease triggers degradation of the cell surface proteoglycan Syndecan-4 (Sdc4). Microinjection of Sdc4 mRNA partially rescued NC migration defects induced by both HtrA1 upregulation and SerpinE2 downregulation. These epistatic experiments suggest a proteolytic pathway by a double inhibition mechanism: SerpinE2 ┤HtrA1 protease ┤Syndecan-4 → NC cell migration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) seed (CS) and Pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) seed (PS) are used in ruminant diets as energy sources. The current experiment studied the impact of dietary inclusion of CS and PS on nutrient intake and digestibility, milk yield, and milk composition of dairy sheep. Twelve primiparous Texel × Suffolk ewes [70 ± 5 days in milk (DIM); 0.320 ± 0.029 kg milk yield] were distributed in a 4 × 3 Latin square design and fed either a butter-based control diet [CON; 13 g/kg dry matter] or two diets with 61 g/kg DM of either CS or PS. Dietary inclusion of CS and PS did not alter live weight (p >0.1) and DM intake (p >0.1). However, compared to the CON, dietary inclusion of both CS and PS increased the digestibility of neutral detergent fiber (p <0.001) and acid detergent lignin (p < 0.001). Milk production (p = 0.001), fat-corrected milk (p < 0.001), and feed efficiency (p < 0.001) were enhanced with PS, while the highest milk protein yield (p < 0.05) and lactose yield (p < 0.001) were for CS-fed ewes. Compared to the CON diet, the ingestion of either CS and/or PS decreased (p < 0.001) the C16:0 in milk. Moreover, both CS and PS tended to enhance the content of C18:3n6 (p > 0.05) and C18:3n3 (p > 0.05). Overall short-term feeding of CS and/or PS (up to 6.1% DM of diet) not only maintains the production performance and digestibility of nutrients but also positively modifies the milk FA composition. This article aims to review the various techniques used to produce diesel from lignocellulosic biomass. Data were collected using the Web of Science database to identify trends, barriers, and prospects associated with the alternative methods used. The analysis reviewed 359 papers published between 2006 and 2021, focusing on three key areas: biomass pretreatment, biomass conversion, and biorefining. Pretreatment technologies require extensive research to reduce excessive energy and reagent consumption, thereby reducing overall costs. Fast pyrolysis and lipid‐producing microorganisms have been shown to be the most promising conversion routes due to their versatility in utilizing different lignocellulosic residues and producing a wide range of marketable co‐products. The most widely used method used for refining is hydroprocessing coupled with catalysts, with the objective of improving bio‐oil quality. Two of the main challenges are the excessive cost of the overall process and the limitations imposed by the technology. These limitations require processing optimization to achieve sustainable production and valuable co‐products. The growth of lignocellulosic diesel production will depend on the integration with other biodiesel and biofuel production processes by the optimization of new processes and the generation of new bioproducts to increase efficiency and reduce costs for commercial viability. Countless workers handle bodily effluvia and body envelope violations every working day, and consequentially face deeply unpleasant levels of disgust. Understanding if and how they adapt can help inform policies to improve worker satisfaction and reduce staff turnover. So far, limited evidence exist that self-reported disgust is reduced (or lower to begin with) among those employed in high-disgust environments. However, it is unclear if this is due to demand effects or translates into real behavioural changes. Here, we tested healthcare assistants (N = 32) employed in UK care homes and a control sample (N = 50). We replicated reduced self-reported pathogen disgust sensitivity in healthcare workers compared to controls. We also found it negatively correlated with career duration, suggesting long-term habituation. Furthermore, we found that healthcare assistants showed no behavioural disgust avoidance on a web-based preferential looking task (equivalent to eye tracking). Surprisingly, this extended to disgust elicitors found outside care homes, suggesting generalisation of disgust habituation. While we found no difference between bodily effluvia (core disgust) and body envelope violations (gore disgust), generalisation did not extend to other domains: self-reported sexual and moral disgust sensitivity were not different between healthcare assistants and the control group, nor was there a correlation with career duration. In sum, our work confirms that people in high-frequency disgust employment are less sensitive to pathogen disgust. Crucially, we provide preliminary evidence that this is due to a process of long-term habituation with generalisation to disgust-elicitors within the pathogen domain, but not beyond it. While ulceration is one of the most common infantile hemangioma (IH) complications, severe bleeding is a rare consequence, with a paucity of patients reported. We report a 5‐month‐old girl with a very large, mixed, partial segmental IH of the upper chest wall who, despite medical intervention, developed severe ulceration and multiple episodes of life‐threatening bleeding that ultimately led to hemorrhagic shock. Experience in our patient and a review of six previous reports shows that severe bleeding is a risk when ulceration extends directly into an arterial feeding vessel that is often visible clinically. Other potential predictors for severe bleeding include large to very large IH size with extension of the tumor into underlying structures, segmental or partial segmental patterning, mixed and bulky morphology, and white discoloration as a sign of impending or worsening ulceration. Background: Prevention of vertical (mother to child) transmission of HIV is one of the key strategies towards HIV epidemic control. Despite considerable progress over the past decade in Zambia, the country is yet to reach global and national target for elimination of vertical transmission of HIV. Avoidance of unintended pregnancy among women living with HIV is one of the cost-effective interventions in a comprehensive approach to prevent vertical transmission of HIV. Therefore, this study aimed at ascertaining trends in and predictors of unmet need for family planning among women living with HIV in Zambia. Methods: The study employed a repeated cross sectional (RCS) study design, using data from the three (3) most recent consecutive rounds of the Zambia Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS) conducted in 2007, 2013/2014 and 2018. The study used data from a total of 27,153 women aged 15–49 years over the three survey periods among whom 4,113 had an HIV positive result following a rigorous HIV testing algorithm of the demographic and health surveys, and these constituted our sample size of women living with HIV. We used descriptive statistics and logistic regression analyses to respectively ascertain trends in and predictors of unmet need for family planning among women living with HIV. Results: Over the three survey points, unmet need for family planning among women living with HIV has largely remained unchanged from 20.8% in 2007 to 20.5% in 2013/14 and 21.1% in 2018 DHS. Residence, age of women, household wealth, woman's parity, employment, and age of spouse emerged as significant predictors of unmet need for family planning among women living with HIV in Zambia. Conclusion: Preventing HIV infection in a child preserves life, contributes to improving quality of life from its early stages and averts lifetime costs of HIV treatment and associated healthcare costs. There is need to consider optimization of interventions to prevent vertical transmission of HIV including shaping programming regarding preventing unintended pregnancies among women living with HIV. Among other aspects, policy and practice need to strengthen SRH/HIV integration and better target rural residents, younger women, those with high parity and consider positive male engagement to reduce unmet need for family planning among women living with HIV. AbstractWe propose a new method for high-dimensional semi-supervised learning problems based on the careful aggregation of the results of a low-dimensional procedure applied to many axis-aligned random projections of the data. Our primary goal is to identify important variables for distinguishing between the classes; existing low-dimensional methods can then be applied for final class assignment. To this end, we score projections according to their class-distinguishing ability; for instance, motivated by a generalized Rayleigh quotient, we can compute the traces of estimated whitened between-class covariance matrices on the projected data. This enables us to assign an importance weight to each variable for a given projection, and to select our signal variables by aggregating these weights over high-scoring projections. Our theory shows that the resulting Sharp-SSL algorithm is able to recover the signal coordinates with high probability when we aggregate over sufficiently many random projections and when the base procedure estimates the diagonal entries of the whitened between-class covariance matrix sufficiently well. For the Gaussian EM base procedure, we provide a new analysis of its performance in semi-supervised settings that controls the parameter estimation error in terms of the proportion of labeled data in the sample. Numerical results on both simulated data and a real colon tumor dataset support the excellent empirical performance of the method. Land‐use change and agricultural expansion have caused marked biodiversity loss in Southeast Asia, but impacts on freshwater communities have been very little studied. Semi‐aquatic bugs are abundant in streams, provide prey for many other animals, and are sensitive to environmental change, making them a relevant group for studying land‐use change.We investigated the effects of logging and conversion of forest to oil palm plantations on semi‐aquatic bugs in Sabah, Malaysia, and the potential value of retaining riparian buffer strips in plantations, by sampling across 12 rivers along an existing land‐use gradient. We recorded catchment, riparian, and stream‐scale environmental variables and surveyed semi‐aquatic bugs within streams in old‐growth forest, logged forest, and oil palm plantation with (OPB) and without buffer strips (OP). We recorded the abundance, richness, total biomass, and proportion of juveniles and winged adult individuals of all species, together with the sex ratio of a common morphospecies (Ptilomera sp.), as possible indicators of disturbance effects.Average abundance and average richness, but not total biomass, of all semi‐aquatic bugs were lower in areas with higher habitat disturbance. In particular, average abundance in old‐growth forest was more than two, four, and six times higher than that in logged forest, OPB, and OP, respectively. Average richness in old‐growth forest was higher than in logged forest by two species, but more than two and three times higher than in OPB and OP, respectively.The presence of riparian buffer strips in oil palm had little effect on the abundance and richness of semi‐aquatic bugs. We found no significant differences in the proportion of juveniles, winged adult individuals, or the sex ratio of Ptilomera sp. along the disturbance gradient.In conclusion, oil palm plantations were associated with lower average abundance and richness of semi‐aquatic bugs than forest sites, but community composition did not differ markedly between logged and old‐growth forests. We also found that the forested buffer strips maintained within our oil palm plantation study sites did not protect forest species of semi‐aquatic bugs. Maintaining forest may therefore provide the best option for the conservation of semi‐aquatic bugs, but further studies of the effects of land‐use change and management options are needed across Southeast Asia.
