- Abstract
Three installments of "Writing Assignment of the Month," a regular feature of the National Council of Teachers of English publication, "Notes Plus," are presented in this compilation. The articles describe writing exercises which have proven to be successful in the classroom. The first article gives suggestions for introducing students to mapping, a prewriting technique which uses graphic representations of information as an aid in organizing ideas for written and oral compositions. An example of mapping and a student essay derived from a map are included. The second article offers detailed instructions for a two-week writing unit which uses comparisons of film critiques from a variety of publications to teach writing and research skills. The guidelines include objectives and day-by-day instructions. The final article describes two methods of using writing as a means of enhancing learning across the curriculum. The methods, speculative and double-entry journal writing, involve stopping frequently while reading in order to write down observations and thoughts. It is stressed that this type of writing is a process rather than product. (DC)

National Council of Teachers of English, Urbana, IL., ERIC Clearinghouse on Reading and Communication Skills, Urbana, IL., and Cullinan, Bernice E.
- Abstract
This book offers direction for the teacher who wants to know what can be done to improve the effectiveness of language and reading instruction. Part 1 focuses on the issues in teaching black children to read and provides the teacher with an orientation to some of the specific problems in the field such as the question of the existence and nature of black dialects, whether black English speakers should be taught standard English, and what teachers need to know to be effective in the classroom which includes dialect speakers. Diagnostic tools are described in part 2 so that the teacher can identify the language base on which to build individual programs. Articles in part 3 suggest classroom strategies for teaching oral standard English to nonstandard speakers. Part 4 provides materials which guide teachers in assisting dialect speakers in their special problems with correspondence between spoken forms and written symbols in beginning reading. Part 5 contains the edited transcripts of the proceedings from a conference which provide a framework for understanding the questions that black English raises in the teaching of reading. Two special resources for teachers, including an annotated bibliography of materials on language, dialects, and reading, comprise part 6. (HOD)

- Abstract
Experience in teaching composition at every level, from seventh grade to advanced writing courses intended for college sophomores, reveals one common problem--lack of specificity. Hillocks discusses this problem and suggests that it can be surmounted by involving students in the process of observing, encouraging them to draw inferences from their observations, and helping them to develop the sense of audience and critical awareness that comes with having students read, listen to, and comment on each other's writing. Fifteen activities designed to increase the students' power as observers and recorders of sensory experience are described. (JM)

- Abstract
In the fall of 1972 the Research Foundation of the National Council of Teachers of English decided to fund the Research Instruments Project (TRIP), a project designed to collect and evaluate measurement instruments in reading, language development, teacher competency, standard English as a second language or dialect, literature, writing, listening, and miscellaneous language skills. In addition to being suitable for assessing a component of the field of English education, the tests selected had to be available on microfilm from University Microfilms or through the ERIC system, must not have been published or made commercially available, and had to have potential use for future research. Information on each of the more than 100 instruments listed includes the suggested age range, a description of the instrument, validity, reliability, and normative data, ordering information, and a list of related documents and references. - Abstract
This book is designed to be a bridge between teachers and research in such topics as the cloze procedure, readability formulas, miscue analysis, reading strategies, informal reading inventories, and concepts and reading in the content areas. "Children's Behavior While Reading" by H. Robinson serves as a bridge between Huey's early beginning and contemporary theory and research. "Oral Reading Analysis: A View of the Reading Process" by C. Burke and "Reading Strategy Lessons; Expanding Reading Effectiveness" by Y. Goodman both discuss the reading process as seen through miscue analysis. "The Relationship of Beginning Reading Instruction and Miscue Patterns" by J. DeLawter looks at patterns of miscues in children who have received different kinds of reading instruction. "A Different Look at Reading in the Content Areas" by K. Carlson looks at the differences in miscues produced in reading different content materials. "Literacy in the Classroom" by J. Bormuth discusses readability of texts and the pupils' ability to comprehend textual materials. "Auditory Discrimination: Differences versus Deficits" by P. Williams reports on research that isolates linguistic elements. And "Use of Informal Reading Inventories" by W. Page and R. Barr discusses the informal reading inventory. (WR)

- Abstract
This booklet is intended for teachers who are now teaching units in film production as part of a program in communication or who wish to begin work with filmmaking in such a program. The first section is intended to serve as a brief introduction to film theory, while a major portion of the rest of the booklet is devoted to film projects which may be used with classes. Exercises included for teachers without access to filmmaking equipment may be carried out with pencils, paper, and other readily available classroom materials. Other exercises using super-8 cameras and equipment are also suggested, as are activities using videotape recorders and still cameras in place of motion picture equipment. All exercises and activities are designed for adaptation to grade and ability levels by the teacher. (LL)

44. Children's Categorization of Speech Sounds in English. NCTE Committee on Research Report No. 17.

- Abstract
The primary purposes of this study were to investigate the phonetic bases of nonstandard spellings invented by preschool and primary-grade children, to devise appropriate experimental techniques for eliciting judgments of phonetic relationships from young children, to identify the specific characteristics that influence children's categorization of speech sounds, and to identify the significance of children's phonetic judgments for phonetic classification and for the teaching of literacy. The six chapters of the book discuss such topics as invented spelling, experimental studies of clusters, experimental studies of preconsonantal nasals, and studies of vowels. Some of the major conclusions reached in this study are that (1) the basis for certain common nonstandard spellings is that children categorize speech sounds in unexpected but phonetically justified ways; and (2) categorization of speech sounds is an important component of early language learning because it influences children's efforts in spelling, giving rise to certain types of apparent errors which teachers should understand in order to respond appropriately. ERIC Clearinghouse on Reading and Communication Skills, Urbana, IL. and American Institutes for Research in the Behavioral Sciences, Palo Alto, CA.
- Abstract
This catalog of reading programs is a result of an intensive search by the American Institutes for Research of reading programs in operation across the nation, followed by computer evaluation of the findings. Although the principal objective of the research was to produce multimedia inservice packages for reading teachers which demonstrate twelve outstanding programs, the number of effective reading programs discovered was too significant to go unreported. Summaries are given for each of the 222 programs judged to have potential for improving reading ability. The size of each program and its target population are described; its starting date, staff, and major features are given; its facilities, materials, and equipment are listed; and its cost is detailed. Sources of further information on each program are also included. The programs outline elementary, secondary, adult, and special education areas and cover a wide range of reading skills, organizational plans, and geographical areas. The twelve programs to be depicted in multimedia packages are also briefly described. More complete descriptions of most of the programs can be found in the ERIC system. (MKM)

National Council of Teachers of English, Urbana, IL., ERIC Clearinghouse on Reading and Communication Skills, Urbana, IL., and Hoetker, James
- Abstract
Although drama should be a central, indispensable activity not only in language arts programs but in college and university programs preparing teachers of language arts and reading, few teachers have had opportunities for the workshop and theater experiences that would enable them to introduce their students to the world of drama. This booklet suggests resources that are rich and detailed enough to enable any teacher to learn drama while teaching it. The primary focus is on Viola Spolin's "Improvisation for the Theater," which sets out a structured sequence of dramatic activities--theater games--designed to prepare students of any age to act on the stage. A number of theater games, many of them Spolin's are described so the reader may get an idea of their nature and their possible uses. (TO)

- Abstract
The purpose of this booklet is to provide a summary of perception research and to suggest practical applications which will improve students' and teachers' communication ability. The "theory" section of this work is devoted to the definition of perception as a selective process, dependent on such factors as acuity of sensory equipment, physical point of view, psychophysical condition, past experience, and present needs and purposes. The manner in which perception is used in communication and basic principles such as continuity, proximity, perceptual constancy, and figure-ground relationship which influence perception are also examined. The "practice" section includes exercises suitable for classroom implementation in sensitivity, nonverbal perception, listening, and awareness. (KS)

- Abstract
The purpose of this booklet is to aid high school and college instructors in designing and teaching units or courses in the fundamentals of informational and employment interviewing. The theory section of this work provides a definition of related communications principles, and an analysis of the dynamics of informational and employment interviewing. Exercises are suggested to demonstrate to students their involvement in day-to-day interviewing situations and to increase student awareness of the total interview process, types and uses of interviewing in American society, and the advantages and disadvantages of interviewing as an information gathering technique. Other exercises are specifically related to preparation for career-hunting through practice in the employment interview situation and resume writing. (KS)

- Abstract
Human communication involves the interaction of selves, and an intercultural encounter permits the discovery of one's own cultural self. Participatory learning of intercultural communication provides students with an opportunity for involvement through analysis of their and others' perceptions, improvement of language fidelity, emphasis on sensitivity to difference in others, and development of an ability to evaluate intercultural communications. Practical applications of theory for the classroom include exercises designed to stimulate self-awareness, improve understanding of cultural patterns through the study of literature, and increase perception of varied value systems.
