Descriptive statistical analysis reveals that the Gateway Service has been consistently playing the leading role in global document delivery service as well as in global resource sharing. This article investigated how to use holding data, circulation and interlibrary loan (ILL) statistics to analyze the East Asian collection at the University of Minnesota. Data from multiple sources was divided along Library of Congress call number classification to help explore what was collected, utilized, and what should be grown or de-emphasized. These three sets of data are readily available in most libraries, and they can serve as a powerful tool to help subject librarians to assess the collection in their subject fields. This article reports on library services focusing on cataloging outsourcing at the University of California Los Angeles East Asian Library. Cataloging outsourcing may be regarded as a trend in future library services but those who opposed see it as a threat to the library profession. Since October 2005, with a pilot project in September 2004, the UCLA East Asian Library has been pursuing an outsourcing project for cataloging backlogs. The advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing of cataloging backlogs is also discussed.

This article highlights the collection evaluation of Chinese history resources on the Ming and Qing dynasties at the East Asian collection, University of Wisconsin, Madison. The collection evaluation project was a collaborative effort between Victoria Chu, an East Asian studies librarian, and Kefeng Qiu, a first year MLS student. The curriculum covered current and traditional topics related to East Asian librarianship and was well attended by East Asian and Chinese studies librarians in North America.

This article reports on Glenn Shaw focusing on his collection at the East Asia collection. Shaw is a writer and professor who first went in Japan in 1913 and lived there. He amassed a collection of more than 6,000 items, which was donated by his family to the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1963 after his death. In 1970, the Glenn Shaw collection was transferred to the Asia Collection at Hamilton Library at the University of Hawaii, along with the entire East-West Center library. The collection is now integrated with the general Asia and East materials, though some items have been moved to the Closed Shelves section for protection.

This article presents information on five fundamental elements that a new librarian should pay attention to in order to get a new East Asian collection started in the right direction, that will result, in time, in a "beautiful picture." These five fundamental elements are User relations, Vendor relations, Colleague relations, Inter-collegiate relations, and Gifts and Exchanges. To develop a new East Asian collection, the librarian must know who are the primary users, what their information needs are, and how to maintain close ties with them. Undoubtedly, in an academic library, the major users of the East Asian collections would be faculty and students in the appropriate departments, institutes and research program. To obtain materials selected according to guidelines set up in the collection development policy, the librarian needs to develop good vendor relations to facilitate the purchase of those materials and their distribution to the library. A new East Asian collection is usually a one-librarian situation, and organizationally the collection is nestled in the mainstream collections. It does not have the division of labor that is found in a regular East Asian Library. To accomplish the work needing to be done, the East Asian studies librarian needs cooperation and support from colleagues in almost all other library departments or units.

Between January 1, 2004, and February 25, 2005, CEAL received $13,780.00 in personal as well as institutional subscription payments and $687.83 in accrued interest, for a total of $14,467.83. It also received $4,205.00 registration fees for the two 2005 pre-conference cataloging workshops sponsored by the Committee on Technical Processing. The registration fees are intended to cover travel expenses and honoraria for the instructors, as well as the purchasing and reproduction of instructional materials. The total debit for the period of January 1, 2004, to February 25, 2005, was $11,701.86. The largest item was $6,156.18 for printing of "Journal of East Asian Libraries," issues. The ending balance of the CEAL account as of February 25, 2005, is $20,469.08. After subtracting the pre-conference workshop registration fees, there is a net increase of $2,748.40 over the previous year's final total. One of the major reasons for this large increase was the subscription received for multiple years at once, and many subscribers took this option.

The article reports that on May 22,1963, Edwin G. Beal, then Head of the Orientalia Division of the Library of Congress, and Chairman of the Committee on Library Resources in the Far East, issued the first newsletter of that organization on East Asian libraries. That first newsletter included discussions about technical processing, acquisitions, cataloging, exchange of information, and personnel announcements. Over the years reports of meetings and research collections, book reviews, and articles of professional interest were added. The question of whether to make the "Journal of East Asian Libraries," a peer-reviewed journal came up regularly at the meetings of the Executive Board after 1996. The question was listed as an item on the meeting agenda for discussion by the Executive Board a number of times but was usually tabled for lack of time. In 2003, the Executive Board tackled the issue in earnest, and for the next two years work was done to make sure that whatever decision was reached, it would be carefully considered and reflect the ideas and opinions of the members of Council of East Asian libraries (CEAL). Finally, the question was voted upon at the Plenary Session of the annual CEAL meeting, held in Chicago, Illinois, on March 30, 2005.

The article presents information about the annual meeting of the Council on East Asian Libraries Committee Technical Processing (CTP), that was held on Wednesday, March 3, 2004, in San Diego, California. The session began with the chair of the committee, Mr. Hideyuki Morimoto, welcoming participants to the meeting and introducing the current CTP members. Morimoto introduced the outline of the session program, which consisted of three presentations and a committee report, including previously received cataloging questions and general remarks. The East Asian Library at University of Washington holds approximately 10,000 serials, including Chinese, Japanese and Korean, which are shelved into 6 locations. Before 2001, 80% of Chinese and Korean serials were not fully cataloged; and holding and item records were also not completed. Therefore, the project was initiated in 2001 in order to bring the library in line with other libraries in using Pinyin transliteration of Chinese materials; to improve access to library collection; and to facilitate collection development, interlibrary loan services, circulation, and technical services.

The award ceremony took place on March 31, 2005. Yongyi Song, technical services and collection development librarian at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library, California State University, Los Angeles, is the 2005 recipient of the American Library Association Paul Howard Award for Courage. The Howard Award is a bi-annual award consisting of $1,000 and a gold-framed citation of achievement honoring a librarian, library board, library group, or an individual who has exhibited unusual courage for the benefit of library programs or services.

From the Warring States period on institutional reforms and popular education generated various schools, such as the Confucians and the Taoists in the form of private writings and collections. And with the far reaching impact of Buddhism on the Chinese thought, religion and scholarship, religious literature became popular.
