Review of prospective database.To report the results of Ponte osteotomy with pedicle screw instrumentation for major thoracic adolescent idiopathic (AIS) curves.Ponte osteotomy for achieving coronal and sagittal correction of major thoracic curves in AIS with pedicle screw instrumentation is a widespread technique, but results have not been well described.Review of 87 consecutive AIS patients with Lenke 1-4 curves who underwent Ponte osteotomies and pedicle screw instrumentation by 2 surgeons at a single institution. Surgical details, blood loss, and complications were recorded. We evaluated coronal and sagittal radiological measurements and Scoliosis Research Society-22 (SRS-22) questionnaire scores over 2-year follow-up.The mean preoperative thoracic coronal Cobb angle was 57° ± 9.7°, fulcrum flexibility was 47.2%, and lateral Cobb angle was 17.8° ± 4°. The mean estimated blood loss (EBL), expressed as percent estimated blood volume, was 35.8 ± 20.5 mL. There was significant improvement in coronal thoracic Cobb angle, percent correction, and apical vertebral translation over 2-year follow-up (p .05). In hypokyphotic curves, there was a significant increase in lateral thoracic T5-T12 kyphosis from 8.1° to 18.3° (p.001). In hyperkyphotic curves, mean lateral thoracic T5-T12 kyphosis improved from 45° to 26° (p.001). Median SRS-22 domains were higher after treatment (p.05). Complications included significant hypotension (1), EBL greater than 75% estimated blood volume (2), and wound infection needing drainage (2). There were neuromonitoring signal changes in 7 patients but no significant neurological complications.In this case series of major thoracic AIS curves treated with segmental pedicle screw instrumentation and Ponte osteotomies, there was an improvement in the coronal and sagittal radiological parameters. A prospective controlled study is needed to determine whether pedicle screw instrumentation and Ponte osteotomies influence outcomes and complications.

Among five components of metabolic syndrome, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is unique because it is not significantly associated with blood pressure. This study looks at cross-sectional relationships between HDL cholesterol and hypertension using medical check-up data from 1803 apparently healthy Japanese men aged 49.9 +/- 9.0 years, and 1150 Japanese women aged 49.5 +/- 9.0 years. Pearson's correlation coefficients between systolic blood pressure (SBP)/diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and HDL cholesterol were -0.01 (ns)/-0.01 (ns) in men and -0.04 (ns)/-0.01 (ns) in women. The standardised partial regression coefficient of HDL cholesterol for SBP/DBP (mmHg) controlling for age, body mass index (BMI), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), triglycerides, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were 0.15 (P < 0.0001)/0.15 (P < 0.0001) in men and 0.10 (P < 0.0001)/0.12 (P < 0.0001) in women. The odds ratio (OR; 95% confidence interval [CI]) of a 1 mg/dL increment of HDL cholesterol for hypertension controlling for age, BMI, FPG, triglycerides, hs-CRP, LDL cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, exercise status, drinking status, and smoking status was 1.03 (1.02-1.04; P < 0.001) in men and 1.03 (1.01-1.05; P = 0.002) in women. Thus, HDL cholesterol was independently positively associated with hypertension in apparently healthy Japanese men and women.

We have investigated the influence of dietary n-6/n-3 (ù-6/ù-3) polyunsaturated fatty acid-balance on the tendency to arterial thrombosis and the progress of atherosclerosis in apoE-/- LDLR-/- double knockout mouse. Homozygous apoE-/- LDLR-/- double knockout mouse (DKO mice, 129XC57BL/6J background) and male C57BL/6 mice aged 6 weeks were divided into four groups. Each group was fed a diet containing a different n-6/n-3 ratio (Group l: 0.29; Group 2: 1.43; Group 3: 5.00; Group 4: 8), prepared with high linolenic (LNA) flaxseed oil (n-3 rich) and high linoleic (LA) safflower oil (n-6 rich). There were no statistical differences in the gain in body weight between the four groups. After 16 weeks, plasma triglyceride and LDL levels in Group 1 were significantly lower than in the other groups. Conversely, HDL was the highest. After 8 and 16 weeks, the tendency to arterial thrombosis was assessed using a He-Ne laser-induced thrombosis model. The degree of atherosclerosis was measured using the entire aorta method employing image analysis software. The n-6/n-3 ratio had a dose-dependent antithrombotic effect (thrombus volume decreased 23%, Group 1 vs. Group 4), In addition, the extent of atherosclerosis was less in the animals fed a low n-6/n-3 ratio compared with the high n-6/n-3 ratio group (atherosclerotic area decreased 40%, Group 1 vs. Group 4). The lowest n-6/n-3 ratio tested (0.29) was the most effective in suppressing the thrombotic and atherosclerotic parameters in these DKO mice.

The B4C- and BN-dispersed β-FeSi2 thermoelectric materials were synthesized by mechanical alloying and subsequent hot pressing. The effects of the B4C and BN dispersion on the thermoelectric properties, such as Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity etc., of the β-FeSi2 were investigated. For the sample with B4C and BN addition, a larger amount of the residual ∈ phase was detected in the X-ray diffraction patterns than the sample without addition. In the case of the BN addition, the Seebeck coefficient was enhanced by BN addition above 700 K, and the electrical resistivity also increased with increasing amount of BN. This is considered to result from doping of a small amount of B into the β phase due to partial decomposition of the BN phase. The fine dispersion of BN particles in the β phase matrix was quite effective for reducing the thermal conductivity as compared to the B4C addition over the entire temperature range. The figure of merit, Z, of the β-FeSi2 was significantly enhanced by BN addition.

Effects of supplementation by copper(I) and copper (II) in Long-Evans Cinnamon(LEC) rats and life survival of rats are given. Long-Evans Cinnamon(LEC) strain rats were used at age of 8 weeks. The rats were randomly assigned to either copper(I) chloride or copper (II) chloride group. We have performed x-ray emissivite determination of copper in liver of LEC rats using PIXE and detected increase in copper in liver at early stage which could be supplemented by copper(I) and copper (II). During the supplementation period, clinical deterioration continued accompanied by daily body sway. The rats lost an undetermined amount of body weight and died approximately fourteen days later.

Objective The aim of the present study was to evaluate the esthetic and functional outcomes after surgical excision of nonmelanomatous malignant lesions of the face, followed by a suitable tool of reconstruction. Background Neoplasm of the skin is found most often on the face. Cosmetically, the face is the most important anatomic area for most patients. Because of this, malignant tumors of the facial skin pose a great challenge in treatment, prohibiting compromises between oncologically responsible surgery and functional and cosmetic outcomes. Patients and methods This prospective study included 25 patients, all of them suffering from nonmelanomatous skin cancer and managed at Menoufia University Hospitals and Damanhur Oncology Center by different modalities of reconstruction during the period from April 2012 to December 2014. The appropriate technique was selected for every patient, taking in consideration the location and size of the lesion. Results Eighteen cases had reconstructive procedures with local flaps only, five cases had more combined reconstructive tools in the form of local flaps (rotational flaps) plus split-thickness graft to close the secondary defect, and two cases required reconstruction with a full-thickness graft. Conclusion Our experience showed that the postoperative defects gave the best cosmetic results when reconstructed by using a nearby tissue, fulfilling all patient and surgeon expectations with a minimum rate of morbidity. Clear guidelines and a multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of skin cancer are important to ensure that patients receive optimal care with satisfactory end results for tumor control as well as reconstructive esthetic outcome.

Study Design Retrospective case series from one institution with a comparison control group. Objective To evaluate the safety of concomitant tethered cord release and growing-rod insertion in individuals with early onset scoliosis. Methods We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent concurrent tethered cord release and growing-rod insertion. We compared our data to a comparison control group of eight patients who underwent staged tethered cord release and growing-rod insertion. Results We identified three patients meeting criteria. There were no neurological complications in the three patients who underwent concomitant surgery. Average immediate postoperative curve correction was 43.3 degrees (47.6%). We identified seven patients who underwent staged surgery from a multicenter prospective database. No neurological complications were reported, and average immediate postoperative correction was 35.1 degrees (46.2%). Conclusion We believe that concurrent tethered cord release and growing-rod insertion can be performed safely with the use of multimodality neurophysiological monitoring techniques.

We retrospectively analyzed cases of intra-articular medial malleolar fractures in skeletally-immature patients (Salter-Harris III and IV) with suboptimal outcomes at St. Louis Children's Hospital and Shriner's Hospital for Children. Common causes of poor outcome were frac­ture malunion or malreduction and physeal damage. Malreductions of only 2 mm does not appear to be toler­ated and the concept of "remodeling" does not apply to these fracture patterns. Based on this study, we "recom­mend" fracture reduction and fixation if there is greater than 1 mm of fracture step-off..

We report on a case of a tension band plate and screw construct (Eight Plate) used over the anterior distal tibia in an 9-year-old girl in an attempt to induce recurvatum of the ankle joint to correct a recalcitrant equinus deformity. With growth of the distal tibial physis, the epiphyseal screw was drawn through the physis into the distal tibial metaphysis, resulting in the creation of a transphyseal bony bar. Caution should be exercised when attempting temporary hemiepiphyseodesis using a plate and screw construct in small epiphyses or in an osteopenic bone.

Recent genetic studies have revealed that several epidemiological factors affect Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection in pig populations. However, mechanisms underlying the spread of MAC infection among hog farms have not been clarified. In consideration of this situation, we cross-sectionally investigated the mechanisms underlying the spread of MAC on the island of Okinawa. Pigs slaughtered (n=706,763) and 331 hog farms on Okinawa were surveyed during the years 2002-2004. Two outbreaks of MAC infection were occurred in several farms during survey period. Bacteria were isolated from randomly selected pigs and genotype of isolates was determined by using genetic finger printing methods with the insertion sequence (IS) 1245 restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Most isolates had large numbers of IS1245 copies, while strains with low copy numbers of IS1245 and isolates without IS1245 were seen in few farms. MACs strains were repeatedly isolated from pigs of the affected farms during the survey period. Those farms with an identical pig rearing systems showed synchronic changes in the prevalence of MAC infection. An industrial farm without an outbreak had an independent pig flow, but maintained distinct MAC strains. Multivariate analysis did not reveal independent factors for the prevalence of the MAC infection. These findings suggest that there were three clusters distinguished genetically in the main island of Okinawa, which were potentially spread by common pig flow. However, the outbreaks occurred because of unspecified conditions on each farm environment.

A new low-noise charge-coupled-device (CCD) output amplifier, the RJG detector, has been developed. The RJG detector incorporates a JFET which has an electrically floating ring-junction gate (RJG). The operating principle of the amplifier is that signal charges, transferred from the CCD into the RJG, directly modulate the drain current in the detection JFET. The performance of the detector was evaluated by operating test devices under a 37-MHz clock frequency, which is the same frequency as that for the horizontal CCD operation in the recently developed 2-million-pixel high-definition CCD image sensor. It was found that 1/f noise was reduced by introducing the JFET and that reset noise was completely eliminated by achieving complete charge transfer through the reset operation. As a result, input referred noise equivalent electrons within the 18.5-MHz baseband were reduced to 17 (electrons). >

A new silicon photovoltaic infrared sensor is proposed. Its basic operational principle is demonstrated. The sensor consists of three regions with a homojunction structure, having a flexibly designed barrier height corresponding to the cutoff wavelength. The operation of the sensor is based on infrared absorption and internal photoemission by free electrons in a conduction band in degenerate n/sup ++/-type silicon. The fabricated sensors have verified the basic operational principle and have shown that the detectable wavelength range extends to over 12 mu m. >

A standard TV-compatible PtSi Schottky-barrier infrared imager is described. The imager is a 324*487 element area array and has an electronic shutter function. Although the pixel is 42*21 mu m, a large fill factor of 42% is obtained, using a 1.5- mu m minimum design rule and a two-level polysilicon layer, and two-level aluminum layer structure. Using face-down bonding technology, it was possible to reduce the package size to 60% of the conventional ceramic package size. Due to optimization of the Schottky-barrier diode process and the diode structure, the noise equivalent temperature difference is as small as 0.1 K at f/1. >

An HDTV (high-definition television) color camera has been developed by using a novel color-coding method, the field sequential color-coding method, to suppress spurious color signals. This camera has realized a high resolution of more than 850 TV lines without color moire and spurious color signals. Since the size and weight are 1/5 that of an HDTV 3-CCD color camera, it is suitable for both industrial and home use. >

Objective: To determine if the type of health insurance is associated with a delay in children obtaining orthoses. Methods: The medical records of 60 children who were prescribed an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) or thoracolumbosacral orthosis (TLSO) were retrospectively reviewed. Ten children were randomly chosen with either of 3 types of insurance (government, health maintenance organizations [HMOs], and preferred provider organizations [PPOs]) with an orthosis provided by a single supplier. The time interval between prescription and insurance company authorization was recorded, as well as the interval between prescription and procurement of the orthosis. Results: There were significant differences in the time from prescription to authorization of orthoses between insurance types (P = 0.001) and time from authorization until brace procurement between insurance types (P = 0.01). Children with PPO insurance received authorization for an AFO faster than children with government insurance or an HMO (P < 0.05). Children with government insurance received authorization for a TLSO significantly later than children with PPO insurance (P = 0.004) or HMO insurance (P = 0.03). The difference in time between authorization and procurement of a TLSO in children with PPO insurance (36 days) was strikingly different from that of children with government insurance (123 days) (P = 0.003). Discussion: This study documents that children with government insurance face delays in obtaining orthotic treatment compared with children with PPO insurance. The delay in the procurement of the more expensive brace (TLSO is approximately 4 times the cost of an AFO) correlated to more striking delays in the government-insured population.

In vitro and in vivo experimental models have demonstrated that vascular endothelial function is significantly impaired as a result of oxidative stress, mediated by the generation of oxygen-derived free radicals in response to chronic or acute inflammation. In particular, super-oxide () at specific concentrations leads to the impairment of nitric oxide (NO) bioactivity, and it is known that NO plays a fundamental role in the maintenance of vascular homeostasis. The relationship between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and NO release in thrombosis-related endothelial damage in the peripheral microvasculature remains unclear, however. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of the free-radical scavenger, edaravone, on NO synthesis and thrombotic potential in arterioles after exposure to laser irradiation. Highly sensitive electrochemical NO microsensors were positioned in femoral arterioles of mice, and the kinetics of NO release were recorded in response to standardized laser irradiation in vivo. In addition, images of NO release from damaged vascular cells were investigated in a similar rat model using the NO-sensitive dye 4,5-diaminofluorescein diacetate (DAF-2DA). Thrombogenesis was assessed in carotid arterioles by continuous video microscopy using image analysis software. Laser irradiation led to NO release from perturbed endothelial cells and from platelet-rich thrombi. Edaravone had no significant effect on NO release in non-laser treated, intact endothelium compared with placebo. In contrast, edaravone demonstrated a dose-dependent effect on NO release and thrombogenicity. At a concentration of 10.5 mg/kg per h, edaravone promoted a 5-fold increase in NO and a reduction in platelet-rich thrombus volume to 58% of the placebo values. Our data provide direct evidence to confirm that acute endothelial damage in peripheral microvessels initially induces NO release and that the free-radical scavenger, edaravone, augments NO synthesis leading to suppression of platelet thrombus formation.

An interline-transfer CCD image sensor with 1280(H)× 970(V) pixels that has been developed for a TV camera will be presented. The device, designed for high definition TV, has a 48dB SNR.

Prostate cancer is a common malignancy that affects Japanese elderly men. Its incidence is increasing, recently, and its treatments are various. The measurement of quality of life (QOL) has become important for the evaluation of and selection of treatments. In Japan, however, there is no standard way of measuring QOL for prostate cancer patients, except the Japanese version of the EORTC QOL questionnaire for prostate cancer patients. We examined the validity and feasibility of this translated EORTC QOL questionnaire for prostate cancer patients.Sixty-nine prostate cancer patients who were under treatment in 4 hospitals were selected for this study. We applied the content validity, the factorial validity which was analyzed by the oblique principal component cluster analysis, the internal consistency analyzed by the alpha coefficient of Cronbach, the convergent validity which was used GHQ, IPSS and PS as external measures, and the feasibility.This questionnaire showed good internal consistency, as the alpha coefficient was 0.61 to 0.90 in all domains, except for sex life, which was the lowest. This questionnaire was classified into 7 clusters by the oblique principal component cluster analysis. Consequently, the factorial validity was good, except for items regarding sex life. As domains correlate well with external measures except in sex life, the convergent validity was good. It was suggested that only two items were not acceptable in regard to the content validity and the feasibility, and that the translation into Japanese of 2 items was inadequate.Our study suggests that the Japanese version of the EORTC QOL questionnaire for prostate cancer patients demands improvement for the practical employment in clinical trials, as there is a problem of translation and feasibility.

We developed a new rating scale, Kohnan Vegetative Score, to measure severity and small clinical changes in vegetative state patients. It has 7 items corresponding to the conditions of vegetative state by Japanese Society of Neurosurgery: motor function, food ingestion, urination and defecation, eye movement, vocalization, communication, and facial expression. Each item is rated in 5 ordinal categories: slight (score = 1), mild(2), moderate(4), and extreme(5). The sum of the scores is used as the summary score, which ranges from 7 to 35, and high score means 'severe'. We examined the reliability and the factorial structure of the Kohnan Vegetative Score. The subjects were 10 patients who met the conditions of vegetative state. Four neurosurgeons rated the subjects, and then 2 of them repeated the rating after one week interval. As a measure of reliability, the (weighted) Kappa coefficient proposed Cohen (1960, 1968) was calculated for each item, and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated for the summary score. To analyze the factorial structure, the factor analysis was carried out. The minimum and the maximum weighted Kappa values were 0.44 and 0.64 for intra-rater reliability, and 0.37 and 0.69 for inter-rater reliability, respectively. Concerning the factorial structure, the contribution of the first factor was 91.5% which indicated the unidimensionality of the scale. The ICC's estimate for the summary score were 0.90 (95% C.I.: 0.766-0.970). On the basis of these results, the Kohnan Vegetative Score has unidimensionality and high reliability enough for a practical use.

The Modified Norris Scale is a rating scale for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which consists of two parts, the Limb Norris Scale and the Norris Bulbar Scale. The Limb Scale has 21 items to evaluate extremity function and the Bulbar Scale has 13 items to evaluate bulbar function. Each item is rated in 4 ordinal categories. Considering the habitual difference, we translated the English scale into Japanese one with minor modification, and added more detailed explanations for all categories of each item. Then we examined reliability and factorial structure of the translated scale. The subjects were 23 patients with motor disturbance and each subject was rated twice by 2-4 neurologists. As a measure of reliability, the Kappa coefficient proposed by Cohen (1960) and Kraemer (1980) was calculated for each item and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was evaluated for total scores of each of two scales. To analyze the factorial structure, the factor analysis was carried out. The minimum and the maximum Kappa values were .70 and .97 for intra-rater reliability of the Limb Scale's items, .60 and .83 for inter-rater reliability of the Limb Scale's items, .41 and 1.00 for intra-rater reliability of the Bulbar Scale's items and .26 and .81 for inter-rater reliability of the Bulbar Scale's items, respectively. Concerning the factorial structure, the contribution of the first factor was 83.6% for the Limb Scale and that for the Bulbar Scale was 66.7%. This indicates unidimensionality of both Scales. The ICCs for the total scores were .97 (95%C.I. .95-.99) for the Limb Scale and .86 (.73-.93) for the Bulbar Scale, respectively. On the basis of these results, the Scale has unidimensionality and high reliability enough for practical use.

The effectiveness of fluconazole on deep seated fungal infections associated with hematological disorders was evaluated in a multicenter clinical study. The underlying diseases included acute myeloblastic leukemia, acute lymphocytic leukemia, malignant lymphoma, adult T cell leukemia, multiple myeloma and others. Fluconazole (FLCZ) was administrated 100-400 mg/day intravenously or orally to 79 patients with systemic fungal infections complicated with hematological disorders and it was possible to evaluate clinical efficacies in 60 patients. 27 patients were diagnosed as having determinate systemic fungal infections and 33 patients suspected fungal infections. The clinical efficacies were 81.5% (22/27) in patients with diagnosed fungal infections and 57.6% (19/33) in patients with suspected fungal infections. The overall clinical efficacy was 68.3% (41/60). No side effects such as gastrointestinal symptoms, vascular pain and renal dysfunction were observed in this study. As for abnormal laboratory test, transient increases in GOT, GPT, Al-P, LDH, serum Na, Cl and decrease in serum K were observed in 9 patients (11.4%). These results indicated that FLCZ has a high therapeutic efficacy on deep seated fungal infections in patients with hematological disorders.

MACIF (CD59) is a glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored membrane glycoprotein which inhibits the formation of membrane attack complex of human complement. MACIF prepared from human erythrocyte membranes was digested with pronase. When the digest was subjected to two-phase partition with butanol and 0.1 N HCl, the carboxyl-terminal peptide was recovered in the butanol phase because of the attachment of the highly hydrophobic GPI. The amino acid sequence of the peptide was determined to be Asn72 at its amino-terminus and up to Glu76, while the presence of Asn77 was ambiguous. To allow unequivocal determination of the carboxyl-terminus, a soluble form of MACIF was prepared from human urine on a large scale. The carboxyl-terminal peptide from the soluble form was prepared by tryptic digestion followed by reversed-phase HPLC. The sequence and composition of the peptide unequivocally revealed Asn77 as the carboxyl-terminus. The pattern of disulfide bonds of MACIF was also determined with the membrane form as well as the soluble form. Cystine-containing peptides were prepared by chymotryptic and tryptic digestion, purified by HPLC, and their amino acid sequences were determined. The results indicated that disulfide bonds were formed at Cys3-Cys26, Cys6-Cys13, Cys19-Cys39, Cys45-Cys63 (or 64), and Cys63 (or 64)-Cys69.

After 8 months of storage of normal red cells in liquid nitrogen, red cell enzyme activities were essentially unchanged, except for triose phosphate isomerase which was reduced by about half. Mutant pyruvate kinase (PK), PK Tokyo I, showed no changes in kinetic or electrophoretic properties after 8 months of storage. These findings indicate that red cells stored for a long term in liquid nitrogen can still be used for the study of mutant PK.

A ⅔-in 384 (H) × 490 (V) element interline CCD image sensor with a new antiblooming structure was developed. Blooming was suppressed without sacrificing photosensitivity and dynamic range by means of a vertical overflow drain positioned under (rather than beside) a photodiode. For 10-percent vertical height illumination the smear signal was reduced to 0.05 percent of the illumination signal. Well-balanced performance, namely, large dynamic range (72 dB), low random noise (65 rms noise electrons per charge packet), high-contrast transfer functions for horizontal and vertical directions, and a spectral response similar to the luminous efficiency curve were obtained under moderate operating conditions.

A 1920(H)*1035(V)-pixel high-definition CCD (charge-coupled-device) image sensor compatible with an 1125-scanning-lines and 16:9 aspect-ratio television system is described. The device basically uses an interline scheme with a vertical overflow drain. To maintain 74.25-MHz ultrahigh-data-rate operation, the device adopts a dual-channel configuration for the horizontal CCD (H-CCD) register. To accomplish both vertical signal charge transfer in the vertical CCD (V-CCD) register and signal charge distribution from the V-CCD registers into the dual-channel horizontal CCD registers simultaneously within a 3.77- mu s short horizontal blanking period, a one-horizontal-period signal storage memory electrode and optical black memory are introduced. Bipolar buffer transistor chips are hybridized in the same package as the device, so as to reduce parasitic capacitance at CCD output terminals and maintain a wide-bandwidth operation. The device operates successfully and 1000-TV-line limiting resolution was obtained for both vertical and horizontal directions. Total random noise was evaluated to be 41 electrons. Dynamic range reached 66 dB. Signal-to-noise ratio for a black/white (B/W) camera was 51.5 dB under F4.0 and 2000-lux illumination conditions. >

The device adopts a vertical overflow drain principle, a buried,channel amplifier, three-level polysilicon technology, and 1.5-µm-rule fine-pattern process. The device operates with an NTSC format. The 560 TV lines limiting resolution is obtained in the horizontal direction. No significant loss in transfer efficiency is observed in the horizontal register, even at the 14.32 MHz clock rate. Optimal photosensitivity spectrum response is obtained and the peak response appears at 550 nm. The noise equivalent signal is reduced to 48 electrons, using correlated double sampling. Then, the dynamic range reaches 68 dB. The correlated double sampling, combined with buried-channel amplifier technology is found to be also effective for great reduction in horizontal line noise.

Summary. Four new red-cell pyruvate kinase (PK) variants are presented along with one case of so-called classical type PK deficiency. PK ‘Tokyo II’ had a low activity, Km (PEP) and Vmax, but a normal urea stability and only slight deviation from normal in neutralization tests by antiserum. It had a normal nucleotide specificity, abnormal electrophoretic mobility (fast moving) and the variant was associated with a mild haemolytic anaemia. PK ‘Maebashi’ had a low activity, high Km (PEP), low Vmax urea instability, decreased reactivity to antiserum, normal electrophoretic mobility, normal nucleotide specificity and was associated with a moderate haemolytic anaemia. PK ‘Tsukiji’ had low activity, high Km (PEP), markedly high Vmax, urea instability, decreased reactivity to antiserum, abnormal electrophoretic mobility (fast moving) and grossly abnormal nucleotide specificity especially abnormal behaviour to ADP. The haemolytic process in this case was moderate to severe. PK ‘Ube’ was electrophoretically abnormal (fast moving) but otherwise had normal characteristics and the propositus was healthy and not anaemic. PK ‘Ube’ was found by electrophoretic screening for genetic PK polymorphism. In the classical type PK deficiency, the usual red-cell PK (PK-R1 and PK-R2) was not demonstrable by electrophoresis but instead M2-type PK was present, presumably by compensatory process. Kinetic studies confirmed that the patient's red-cell PK consisted of M2-type PK. This patient had a severe haemolytic anaemia.

A dual-channel horizontal-CCD (H-CCD) register scheme is essential to realizing high-density image sensors. However, fixed pattern noise will appear, unless precise care is taken in designing a transfer region connecting two H-CCD registers. This paper indicates that the fixed pattern noise is caused by an incomplete signal charge transfer between two H-CCD registers, due to the potential dip and barrier formed in the transfer region. A new transfer-region structure is proposed. It has been confirmed that the fixed pattern noise can be eliminated by this new structure. >

An undesirable image lag with a long time constant was found in the interline CCD image sensor having an n+-p-junction photodiode (PD). This paper clarifies the image lag mechanism and proposes a new photodiode structure having very little image lag. The image lag measurement method and the experimental results are also given. The experimental results quantitatively agree with the analytical model, in which signal electrons are assumed to be transferred from the PD to the vertical CCD as a small subthreshold current. To eliminate the image lag, a p+-n-p-structure PD with low donor concentration is proposed, in which all the signal electrons can be quickly transferred before the subthreshold condition begins. As a result, decay lag values for the first and the second fields were reduced to half and no decay lags were observed after the third field.

A sensor with unit cell dimensions as small as 8.4(H)*9.8(V) mu has been developed. In order to realize such a high-density device, the following technologies have been developed: (1) dual-channel horizontal CCD registers, (2) single p-well vertical overflow drain, (3) high-capacitance p-well structure, and (4) inverted-LOCOS channel isolation process. A horizontal resolution of more than 500 TV lines has been obtained. Maximum signal charge for the vertical CCD register is as much as 1.5*10/sup 5/ electrons, corresponding to 270-nA output current, in spite of a narrow-channel vertical CCD register with a mask width of only 1.8 mu m. The total random noise is less than 20 electrons after correlated double sampling. The dynamic range reaches 77 dB, and the photosensitivity is 0.092 mu A/ mu W. Experimental results also show that the technologies used here are effective for realizing a high-definition CCD image sensor for future use. >

Describes the organization and performance of a multipurpose CCD comb filter to separate luminance and chrominance from the composite color video signal. The filter consists of a main (long) and two sub- (short) channels terminated at two comb outputs (add and subtract) and a simple delayed output. It is operated at 4/spl times/f/SUB SC/(f/SUB SC/: color subcarrier frequency). The comb filter transfer functions are usually shifted toward the lower frequency and the rejection ratios are degraded, due to the incomplete charge transfer. A 1920(H) × 1035(V) pixel high definition CCD image sensor has been developed. In order to follow up 74.25 MHz high sampling frequency, as well as to avoid the necessity for ultra fine patterning work for horizontal CCD register electrode formation, the device adopts a dual channel configuration for the horizontal CCD register. To accomplish both vertical signal charge transfer in the V-CCD register and signal charge distribution from the V-CCD registers into the dual channel horizontal CCD registers simultaneously within a 3.77 ?s short horizontal blanking period, the 1H memory electrode between the V-CCD and H-CCD is introduced. The device operates successfully and a 1000 TV line limiting resolution has been obtained.

THE APPLICATION OF AN overflow drain and barrier positioned beside the photosensitive area? has made it possible to suppress blooming of CCD image sensors. However, this method was found to sacrifice photosensitivity and dynamic range. This paper will describe an interline CCD sensor where the vertical overflow drain is positioned under, rather than beside the photodiode. Thus the cell area can now be used effectively for photoelectron generation and storage, and increased photosensitivity and dynamic range can be maintained. Furthermore, this technique eliminates the blooming phenomenon.

New technologies has been developed for dual channel read-out registers. The mechanism for fixed pattern noise, associated with charge transfer between two horizontal CCD registers, has been clarified and optimum design has been proposed. Furthermore, a new dual channel read-out technique has been developed.
