Abstract

Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused a high burden of sick leave worldwide. Long-term sick leave for COVID-19 may be longer than for other influenza-like syndromes. The real impact of long COVID on absenteeism remains uncertain. Aims To investigate the burden of sick leave, especially >12 weeks, in Belgian workers with a positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) from July 2020 to September 2021 and to compare these figures with sick leave for other infectious diseases. Methods We coupled a database of SARS-CoV-2-positive workers and workers who were absent for other infections with objective absence data. Predictors of prolonged sickness were evaluated by negative binomial regression, Cox proportional hazards regression and ordinal logistic regression. Results The study population involved 2569 workers who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and 392 workers who were absent for other infectious diseases. In total, 16% (95% CI 14–17%) of workers with a positive SARS-CoV-2 test had no sick leave registered. Fourteen out of 1000 (95% CI 9–20‰) workers with absenteeism for COVID-19 experienced sick leave >12 weeks as compared to 43 out of 1000 workers (95% CI 3–69‰) with absenteeism due to other infections. When including PCR-positive workers without sick leave, the prevalence of long-term sick leave decreased to 12 per 1000 (95% CI8–17‰). Long-term sick leave was associated with older age, high previous sick leave and low educational level. Conclusions The prevalence of long-term sick leave was lower than estimated in earlier investigations regardless of worrying reports about post-COVID-19 syndrome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

3. Low temperature ferromagnetic properties of the diluted magnetic semiconductor Sb2-xCrxTe3

Abstract

We report on magnetic and electrical transport properties of Sb2-xCrxTe3 single crystals with 0 <= x <= 0.095 over temperatures from 2 K to 300 K. A ferromagnetic state develops in these crystals at low temperatures with Curie temperatures that are proportional to x (for x > 0.014), attaining a maximum value of 20 K for x = 0.095. Hysteresis below TC for applied field parallel to the c-axis is observed in both magnetization and Hall effect measurements. Magnetic as well as transport data indicate that Cr takes the 3+ (3d3) valence state, substituting for antimony in the host lattice structure, and does not significantly affect the background hole concentration. Analysis of the anomalous Hall effect reveals that skew scattering is responsible for its presence. Abstract

The productivity, precision, and performance benefits of Smart Manufacturing are unleashed when there is frictionless movement of information-data in context, at the right time, among systems, operations and people, that can create value within and across all manufacturers and all sizes of plants throughout enterprise supply chains. This chapter argues that the line of sight to the full economic potential of Smart Manufacturing requires business, leadership, market, and infrastructure realignments for the “democratization” of “smart” business, technology, operational, and workforce data practices industry-wide. It argues that access and the ability to effectively use operational data in cyber operations and the knowhow to deploy Smart Manufacturing solutions are increasingly important but are more and more constrained by today’s manufacturing infrastructure practices. It describes how CESMII, the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (https://www.cesmii.org), has been addressing this democratization, breaking through barriers, and transforming manufacturing to a new data-centric orientation.

41. Identification of genes regulated during mechanical load-induced cardiac hypertrophy

Abstract

Cardiac hypertrophy is associated with both adaptive and adverse changes in gene expression. To identify genes regulated by pressure overload, we performed suppressive subtractive hybridization between cDNA from the hearts of aortic-banded (7-day) and sham-operated mice. In parallel, we performed a subtraction between an adult and a neonatal heart, for the purpose of comparing different forms of cardiac hypertrophy. Sequencing more than 100 clones led to the identification of an array of functionally known (70%) and unknown genes (30%) that are upregulated during cardiac growth. At least nine of those genes were preferentially expressed in both the neonatal and pressure over-load hearts alike. Using Northern blot analysis to investigate whether some of the identified genes were upregulated in the load-independent calcineurin-induced cardiac hypertrophy mouse model, revealed its incomplete similarity with the former models of cardiac growth. Abstract

Aim: To develop age-, sex-, and ethnic-Appropriate normative reference ranges for standard echocardiographic measurements of the left heart by combining echocardiographic measurements obtained from adult volunteers without clinical cardiovascular disease or significant cardiovascular risk factors, from multiple studies around the world.Methods and results: The Echocardiographic Normal Ranges Meta-Analysis of the Left heart (EchoNoRMAL) collaboration was established and population-based data sets of echocardiographic measurements combined to perform an individual person data meta-Analysis. Data from 43 studies were received, representing 51 222 subjects, of which 22 404 adults aged 18-80 years were without clinical cardiovascular or renal disease, hypertension or diabetes. Quantile regression or an appropriate parametric regression method will be used to derive reference values at the 5th and 95th centile of each measurement against age. Conclusion: This unique data set represents a large, multi-ethnic cohort of subjects resident in a wide range of countries. The resultant reference ranges will have wide applicability for normative data based on age, sex, and ethnicity. © The Author 2013.

Review of: Raber, M. (2016). Ministries of Compassion among Russian Evangelicals, 1905–1929. – Eugene, OR : Pickwick Publ. – XIV + 259 p. This is a review of a book on the social activity of Evangelicals and Baptists in Russia and the USSR between 1905 and 1929, which was referred to as the compassionate ministry. The author singles out three patterns of compassionate ministry (mutual help as part of a strategy of survival during the period of persecution, ministry to the destitute in order to increase their influence, and Christian economic communities as a means of achieving the economic independence of the religious community), describes the diversity of the religious group, shows the complexity of the social and political context, defines the ministry’s main objectives, draws conclusions, and informs the reader of further research areas. According to the author, the compassionate ministry was voluntary, was aimed at the expansion of faith, and should be considered an important marker of Evangelical and Baptist identity., Рецензия на книгу: Raber M. Abstract

Single crystals of Sb2Te3 doped with Cr (cCr=0–6×1020 cm-3) were prepared by the Bridgman method. The measurements of the Hall coefficient reveal a nonmonotonous dependence of hole concentrations on the Cr content in the crystal. The hole concentration decreases at low content of Cr, while at higher content of Cr it increases again. However, according to magnetic measurements, Cr atoms enter the structure and form uncharged substitutional defects CrSb×, which cannot affect the free carrier concentration directly. The observed dependence can be elucidated by means of a point defect model. The model is based on an assumption that defect structure of Sb2Te3 can be treated as hybrid Schottky and antisite defect disorder. Thus, we assume an interaction of CrSb× with the most populated native defects in the structure—antisite defects SbTe-1 and vacancies in the Te sublattice VTe+2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have measured electrical and magnetic properties of single crystals of Sb[sub 2-x]Mn[sub x]Te[sub 3] with x=0–0.045 at temperatures of 2 K to 300 K. Hall effect measurements indicate that each manganese atom donates approximately one hole to the valence band. The magnetic susceptibility is paramagnetic down to 2 K, and both Curie–Weiss and Brillouin analyses show that manganese substitutes for Sb and takes the Mn[sup 2+] state with S=5/2. Contrary to the case of III–V host matrices, manganese does not stimulate ferromagnetic order in the family of bulk layered V[sub 2]–VI[sub 3] diluted magnetic semiconductors, at least in the range of magnetic impurity and carrier concentrations studied here. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

Barium-filled skutterudites BaCoSb with an anomalously large filling fraction of up to y=0.44 have been synthesized. The lattice parameters increase linearly with Ba content. Magnetic susceptibility data show that BaCoSb is paramagnetic, which implies that some of the Co atoms in BaCoSb have acquired a magnetic moment. The presence of the two different valence states of Co (Co3+ and Co2+) leads to the anomalously large barium filling fraction even without extra charge compensation. All samples show n-type conduction. The electrical conductivity increases with increasing the Ba filling fraction. The lattice thermal conductivity of BaCoSb is significantly depressed as compared to unfilled CoSb. The dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT, increases with increasing temperature reaching a maximum value of 1.1 for BaCoSb at 850 K. c 2001 American Institute of Physics.
