We have used data from the Outer Galaxy High-Resolution Survey (OGHReS) to refine the velocities, distances, and physical properties of a large sample of 3584 clumps detected in far infrared/submillimetre emission in the HiGAL survey located in the $\ell = 250^\circ-280^\circ$ region of the Galactic plane. Using $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO spectra, we have determined reliable velocities to 3412 clumps (95% of the sample). In comparison to the velocities from the HiGAL catalogue, we find good agreement for 80% of the sample (within 5 km/s). Using the higher resolution and sensitivity of OGHReS has allowed us to correct the velocity for 632 clumps and provide velocities for 687 clumps for which no velocity had been previously allocated. The velocities are used with a rotation curve to refine the distances to the clumps and to calculate the clumps' properties using a distance-dependent gas-to-dust ratio. We have determined reliable physical parameters for 3200 outer Galaxy dense clumps (~90% of the HiGAL sources in the region). We find a trend of decreasing luminosity-to-mass ratio with increasing Galactocentric distance, suggesting the star formation efficiency is lower in the outer Galaxy or that it is resulting in more lower mass stars than in the inner Galaxy. We also find a similar surface density for protostellar clumps located in the inner and outer Galaxy, revealing that the surface density requirements for star formation are the same across the Galactic disc., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures. We present radio continuum maps of 12 nearby ($D\leq 27~\rm Mpc$), edge-on ($i\geq 76^{\circ}$), late-type spiral galaxies mostly at $1.4$ and 5 GHz, observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, Very Large Array, Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, Effelsberg 100-m and Parkes 64-m telescopes. All galaxies show clear evidence of radio haloes, including the first detection in the Magellanic-type galaxy NGC 55. In 11 galaxies, we find a thin and a thick disc that can be better fitted by exponential rather than Gaussian functions. We fit our SPINNAKER (SPectral INdex Numerical Analysis of K(c)osmic-ray Electron Radio-emission) 1D cosmic-ray transport models to the vertical model profiles of the non-thermal intensity and to the non-thermal radio spectral index in the halo. We simultaneously fit for the advection speed (or diffusion coefficient) and magnetic field scale height. In the thick disc, the magnetic field scale heights range from 2 to 8 kpc with an average across the sample of $3.0\pm 1.7~\rm kpc$; they show no correlation with either star-formation rate (SFR), SFR surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) or rotation speed ($V_{\rm rot}$). The advection speeds range from 100 to $700~\rm km\,s^{-1}$ and display correlations of $V\propto \rm SFR^{0.36\pm 0.06}$ and $V\propto \Sigma_{\rm SFR}^{0.39\pm 0.09}$; they agree remarkably well with the escape velocities ($0.5\leq V/V_{\rm esc}\leq 2$), which can be explained by cosmic-ray driven winds. Radio haloes show the presence of disc winds in galaxies with $\Sigma_{\rm SFR} > 10^{-3}~\rm M_{\odot}\,yr^{-1}\,kpc^{-2}$ that extend over several kpc and are driven by processes related to the distributed star formation in the disc., Comment: 39 pages, 20 colour figures, 10 tables. The origin and life-cycle of molecular clouds are still poorly constrained, despite their importance for understanding the evolution of the interstellar medium. We have carried out a systematic, homogeneous, spectroscopic survey of the inner Galactic plane, in order to complement the many continuum Galactic surveys available with crucial distance and gas-kinematic information. Our aim is to combine this data set with recent infrared to sub-millimetre surveys at similar angular resolutions. The SEDIGISM survey covers 78 deg^2 of the inner Galaxy (-60 deg < l < +18 deg, |b| < 0.5 deg) in the J=2-1 rotational transition of 13CO. This isotopologue of CO is less abundant than 12CO by factors up to 100. Therefore, its emission has low to moderate optical depths, and higher critical density, making it an ideal tracer of the cold, dense interstellar medium. The data have been observed with the SHFI single-pixel instrument at APEX. The observational setup covers the 13CO(2-1) and C18O(2-1) lines, plus several transitions from other molecules. The observations have been completed. Data reduction is in progress, and the final data products will be made available in the near future. Here we give a detailed description of the survey and the dedicated data reduction pipeline. Preliminary results based on a science demonstration field covering -20 deg < l < -18.5 deg are presented. Analysis of the 13CO(2-1) data in this field reveals compact clumps, diffuse clouds, and filamentary structures at a range of heliocentric distances. By combining our data with data in the (1-0) transition of CO isotopologues from the ThrUMMS survey, we are able to compute a 3D realization of the excitation temperature and optical depth in the interstellar medium. Ultimately, this survey will provide a detailed, global view of the inner Galactic interstellar medium at an unprecedented angular resolution of ~30"., Comment: 30 pages. We present sub-mm continuum and heterodyne data of the interacting galaxy NGC 3627, obtained with the HHT and APEX. We find significant changes in the molecular line ratios over small scales in the southeastern part of this galaxy. The kinematics of the CO(2-1) line, as well as the morphology in the 870um continuum emission, suggest a continuation of the western spiral arm on the east side of the galaxy's central area. This continued spiral arm crosses the normal eastern spiral arm in an area which shows an unusual magnetic field configuration. This spiral arm crossing, independently of if it's physical or just projected, may help in the understanding of the observed magnetic field configuration., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, in conf. proc. We present a fully sampled map covering the Orion Hot Core and dense molecular ridge, in the sub-millimeter J=6-5 rotational transition of 13CO, at 0.45 mm with a resolution of 13 arcsec and 0.5 km s^-1. The map covers 3 arc min by 2arc min . The profile centered on the Hot Core peaks at 8.5 km s^-1 and has a peak intensity of 40 K, corrected antenna temperature. It shows line wings from 30 km s^-1 to -20 km s^-1. The map of intensity, integrated from 0 to +18 km s^-1, shows a prominent maximum <5 arcsec from the center of the Orion Hot Core. The FWHP is 3 arcsec, larger than the regions containing complex molecules. Single dish measurements of lines from the J=2-1 or J=1-0 transitions of CO isotopes show no such distinct maximum. Correcting for optical depth 1.5 in the J=6-5 line of 13CO, and assuming that the level populations are thermalized at 150 K, the beam averaged column density between 0 to +18 km s^-1 is N(13CO )=6.8 10^17 cm^-2 and N(CO)=5.2 10^19 cm-2. When combined with published dust emission data, the CO/ H2 number ratio is 2 {\cdot} 10^-5, a factor of ~5 lower than the canonical value, 10^-4. For the Orion South and Orion Ridge region, the column density of CO is <25% of that found for the Hot Core but CO/H2 ratios are similar. Models of Photodissociation Regions, PDRs, predict that CO lines from PDRs are only marginally optically thick. Within the framework of the HERM33ES key project, we are studying the star forming interstellar medium in the nearby, metal-poor spiral galaxy M33, exploiting the high resolution and sensitivity of Herschel. We use PACS and SPIRE maps at 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 micron wavelength, to study the variation of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with galacto-centric distance. Detailed SED modeling is performed using azimuthally averaged fluxes in elliptical rings of 2 kpc width, out to 8 kpc galacto-centric distance. Simple isothermal and two-component grey body models, with fixed dust emissivity index, are fitted to the SEDs between 24 and 500 micron using also MIPS/Spitzer data, to derive first estimates of the dust physical conditions. The far-infrared and submillimeter maps reveal the branched, knotted spiral structure of M33. An underlying diffuse disk is seen in all SPIRE maps (250-500 micron). Two component fits to the SEDs agree better than isothermal models with the observed, total and radially averaged flux densities. The two component model, with beta fixed at 1.5, best fits the global and the radial SEDs. The cold dust component clearly dominates; the relative mass of the warm component is less than 0.3% for all the fits. The temperature of the warm component is not well constrained and is found to be about 60K plus/minus 10K. The temperature of the cold component drops significantly from about 24K in the inner 2 kpc radius to 13K beyond 6 kpc radial distance, for the best fitting model. The gas-to-dust ratio for beta=1.5, averaged over the galaxy, is higher than the solar value by a factor of 1.5 and is roughly in agreement with the subsolar metallicity of M33., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the A&A Herschel Special Issue

Aims. The purpose of this study is to examine the prediction that the deuterated H3+ ion, H2D+, can be found exclusively in the coldest regions of molecular cloud cores. This is also a feasibility study for the detection of the ground-state line of ortho-H2D+ at 372 GHz with APEX. Methods. The 1(10)-1(11) transition of H2D+ at 372 GHz was searched towards selected positions in the massive star forming cloud OriB9, in the dark cloud L183, and in the low- to intermediate mass star-forming cloud R CrA. Results. The line was detected in cold, prestellar cores in the regions of OriB9 and L183, but only upper limits were obtained towards other locations which either have elevated temperatures or contain a newly born star. The H2D+ detection towards OriB9 is the first one in a massive star-forming region. The fractional ortho-H2D+ abundances (relative to H2) are estimated to be about 1.0E-10 in two cold cores in OriB9, and 3.0E-10 in the cold core of L183. Conclusions. The H2D+ detection in OriB9 shows that also massive star forming regions contain very cold prestellar cores which probably have reached matured chemical composition characterized, e.g., by a high degree of deuterium fractionation. Besides as a tracer of the interior parts of prestellar cores, H2D+ may therefore be used to put contraints on the timescales related to massive star formation., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The feasibility of observing the C18O (3-2) spectral line in cold clouds with the APEX telescope has been tested. As the line at 329.330 GHz lies in the wing of a strong atmospheric H2O absorption it can be observed only at high altitude observatories. Using the three lowest rotational levels instead of only two helps to narrow down the physical properties of dark clouds and globules. The centres of two C18O maxima in the high latitude low mass star forming region CG 12 were mapped in C18O (3-2) and the data were analyzed together with spectral line data from the SEST. The T_MB(3-2)/T_MB(2-1) ratio in the northern C18O maximum, CG 12 N, is 0.8, and in the southern maximum, CG 12 S, ~2. CG 12 N is modelled as a 120'' diameter (0.4pc) cold core with a mass of 27 Msun. A small size maximum with a narrow, 0.8 kms-1, C18O (3-2) spectral line with a peak temperature of T_MB ~11 K was detected in CG 12 S. This maximum is modelled as a 60'' to 80'' diameter (~0.2pc) hot (80 K < Tex < 200 K) ~1.6 Msun clump. The source lies on the axis of a highly collimated bipolar molecular outflow near its driving source. We observed the nearby early-type spiral galaxy NGC 4594 (M 104, Sombrero galaxy) with the Very Large Array at 4.86 GHz, with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope at 8.35 GHz as well as with the Heinrich Hertz Telescope at 345 GHz in radio continuum. The 4.86 and 8.35 GHz data contain polarization information and hence information about the magnetic fields: we detected a large-scale magnetic field which is to our knowledge the first detection of a large-scale magnetic field in an Sa galaxy in the radio range. The magnetic field orientation in M104 is predominantly parallel to the disk but has also vertical components at larger z-distances from the disk. This field configuration is typical for normal edge-on spiral galaxies. The 345 GHz data pertain to the cold dust content of the galaxy. Despite the optical appearance of the object with the huge dust lane, its dust content is smaller than that of more late-type spirals., Comment: 10 pages with 9 figures. We use the radiation transfer simulation of Xilouris et al. (1999) to constrain the quantity of dust in three nearby spiral galaxies (NGC 4013, NGC 5907 and NGC 4565). The predicted visual optical depth from the model is compared with the thermal continuum radiation detected from NGC 4013 and NGC 5907 at 850 microns and from NGC 4565 at 1.2 mm. The former is based on SCUBA images of NGC 4013 and NGC 5907, reduced and presented for the first time in this work. The comparison of visual optical depth and 850 microns (1.2 mm) emission yields the emissivity of dust grains in the submillimeter (millimeter) waveband. We infer a value of 1.2x10^{4} for the emissivity at 850 microns which is a factor 4 higher than the benchmark, semi-empirical model of Draine & Lee (1984). At 1.2 mm our values are a factor 1.5 higher than this model. Our estimates are more closely aligned with recent measurements carried out in the laboratory on amorphous carbon and silicate particulates. A comparison between the distribution of 850 microns (1.2 mm) surface brightness and the intensity levels in the ^{12}CO(1-0) and 21 cm lines underlines the spatial association between dust detected in the submillimeter/millimeter waveband and molecular gas clouds. We suggest that the relatively high emissivity values that we derive may be attributable to amorphous, fluffy grains situated in denser gas environments., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We have observed the continuum emission of the interacting galaxy NGC4631 at 0.87 and 1.23mm using the Heinrich-Hertz-Telescope on Mt. Graham and the IRAM 30-m telescope on Pico Veleta. We have obtained fully sampled maps which cover the optical emission out to a radius of about 7' at both wavelengths. For a detailed analysis, we carefully subtracted the line contributions and synchrotron and free-free emission from the data, which added up to 6% at 1.23mm and 10% at 0.87mm. We combined the flux densities with FIR data to obtain dust spectra and calculate dust temperatures, absorption cross sections, and masses. Assuming a ``standard'' dust model, which consists of two populations of big grains at moderate and warm temperatures, we obtained temperatures of 18K and 50K for the both components. However, such a model suffers from an excess of the radiation at 1.23mm, and the dust absorption cross section seems to be enhanced by a factor 3 compared to previous results and theoretical expectations. At large galactocentric radii, where the galaxy shows disturbances as a result of gravitational interaction, this effect seems to be even stronger. Some possibilities to resolve these problems are discussed. The data could be explained by a very cold dust component at a temperature of 4-6K, an increased abundance of very small grains, or a component of grains with unusual optical properties. We present imaging of molecular gas emission in the star-forming spiral galaxy NGC6946. Our CO(1-0) and CO(3-2) images, made at 22" resolution with the IRAM 30-m and the Heinrich Hertz 10-m radio telescopes, are the most extensive CO observations of this galaxy and are among the most extensive observations of molecular gas in any spiral galaxy. The molecular component in NGC6946 is unusually massive, with a ratio of molecular to atomic Hydrogen of 0.57. A star formation efficiency image for NGC6946 ranges by over two orders of magnitude with highest values found in the northeastern spiral arm, and anticorrelates with the 6cm polarized emission image, which traces the regular part of the magnetic field. We analyse the ISM in NGC6946's disk by making 1-D and 2-D comparisons of images made in several wavebands. A point-by-point correlation technique finds that the molecular gas is closely associated with the 7micron-emitting dust. The high correlation found between the MIR emission and the radio continuum at 6cm cannot be due to dust heating and gas ionization in star-forming regions because the thermal radio emission is less correlated with the MIR than the nonthermal emission. We have mapped the CO(3-2) line emission from several nearby galaxies, using the Heinrich-Hertz-Telescope. Our investigation includes twelve galaxies of various types and in different stages of star forming activity. The main results of this CO(3-2) survey are: 1. In none of the observed objects the emission is confined to the nucleus, as claimed in some earlier publications. CO(3-2) emission can be detected for some objects to the same extent as the CO(2-1) and the CO(1-0) lines. 2. The emission is more concentrated to the vicinity of star forming structures than the lower CO transitions. This is shown by decreasing line ratios from the very centres towards larger radii. 3. The CO(3-2) luminosity is stronger in objects that contain a nuclear starburst or morphological peculiarities. 4. The line ratios seem to be independent of Hubble type, color or luminosity. Most galaxies with enhanced central star formation show line ratios of ~1.3 in the very centre and \~1.0 at a radius of about 1kpc. Objects with a ring-like molecular gas distribution or normal galaxies show lower ratios. 5. Starburst galaxies show CO(3-2) emission also in their disks. We have detected extraplanar cold dust at distances out to > 10 kpc, situated in the halo of the interacting galaxy NGC 4631. The dust emission disk is much thinner than the warped HI disk and new structures emerge. In particular, a giant arc has been found that is linked to anomalies in the kinematical structure of the atomic gas. Most of the extraplanar dust is closely associated with HI spurs that have been found earlier. These spurs obviously are traces of the interaction. The dust emission within the plane reaches the border of the optical disk. The activity of the disk of NGC 4631 is moderately enhanced by the interaction, but no gas moving in the z-direction could be found. Hence, it seems unlikely that strong winds have deposited the high-z dust. Instead, the coincidence with the HI features suggests that we see a track left behind by the interaction. In addition, the HI shows a supershell formed by an impact in the zone where the dust trail crosses the disk. This region is also characterized by disturbances in the distribution of the Ha light. Watson and Haff (1980) have discussed a theory which is designed to explain quantitatively isotopic fractionation effects observed during sputtering of simple or complex targets. This theory is based on the assumption that most of the atoms sputtered from a surface originate in the top monolayer. The present investigation is mainly concerned with a direct experimental test of that assumption. The sputtering of both solid and liquid phases of gallium, indium, and the gallium-indium eutectic alloy is studied. Results obtained with the aid of ion scattering and Auger spectroscopy show that, in agreement with rough theoretical expectations, the surface monolayer of a gallium-indium alloy with 16.5 percent indium in bulk contains more than 94 percent indium, while the next layer can be only slightly enriched.
