The granulomatous lymphadenitis (GL) in pigs is mainly caused by Mycobacterium avium hominissuis (MAH), who belongs to the Mycobacterium avium Complex (MAC), considered non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). Although GL does not affect swine zootecnical performance, economic losses occur during the slaughter line by condemning viscera and carcasses. The lesion is characterized by one or more foci of granuloma, which most frequently affect the organs of the digestive tract and peripheral lymph nodes. The main differential diagnosis encompasses Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis), who belongs to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex (MTbC), of relevant zoonotic potential. Nevertheless macroscopic examinations and histopathology are insufficient to determine the etiologic agent involved. Federal Meat Inspection had registered the frequency of 0,81 % of lymphadenitis in Brazil from 2012 to 2014. The aim of this study was to investigate the etiology of the granulomatous lesions for validation of the national data of inspection and build a database to further risk analysis. RESUMO As doenças pulmonares intersticiais constituem um grupo de doenças difusas do parênquima pulmonar, no qual a fibrose pulmonar intersticial está incluída. Histologicamente, esta se caracteriza por hiperplasia de pneumócitos tipo II, hiperplasia ou hipertrofia de músculo liso e fibrose. Embora a patogenia da fibrose pulmonar intersticial não esteja bem elucidada, devido às semelhanças microscópicas encontradas nos pneumócitos tipo II em felinos e na forma familiar da doença em humanos, acredita-se que haja caráter genético para o seu desenvolvimento. Os sinais clínicos frequentemente relatados incluem desconforto respiratório, cianose, letargia e perda de peso. Devido ao caráter progressivo e à ausência de tratamento específico, a doença apresenta prognóstico desfavorável. Foi atendida uma gata de 12 anos de idade, com histórico de dispneia há 20 dias. Ao exame clínico, o animal apresentou dispneia expiratória restritiva, crepitação à ausculta torácica e foi visualizado padrão intersticial ao exame radiográfico do tórax. A paciente foi submetida à punção com agulha fina de tecido pulmonar e veio a óbito algumas horas após o procedimento, apresentando insuficiência respiratória aguda. No exame histológico do tecido pulmonar, foi verificada a ocorrência de fibrose pulmonar idiopática. O objetivo do presente trabalho é relatar um caso de dispneia expiratória restritiva em um felino doméstico devido à fibrose pulmonar idiopática, já que, segundo o conhecimento dos autores, não há nenhum relato da ocorrência da doença no país. ABSTRACT Interstitial lung diseases are a group of diffuse parenchymal lung diseases in which interstitial lung fibrosis is included. Histologically, it is characterized by type II pneumocyte hyperplasia, hypertrophy or hyperplasia of smooth tissue and fibrosis. Although the pathogenesis of interstitial lung fibrosis has not been elucidated, due to the microscopic similarities found in type II pneumocytes in cats and familial form of the disease in humans, it is believed that there is a genetic trait for development. The frequently reported clinical signs include respiratory distress, cyanosis, lethargy, and weight loss. Due to the progressive nature and the absence of specific treatment, the disease has a poor prognosis. A 12-year-old cat with dyspnea for 20 days was assisted. The animal underwent fine needle aspiration of lung tissue and died few hours after the procedure, with acute respiratory failure. Upon histological examination of lung tissue, the occurrence of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis was found. The aim of this study is to report a case of restrictive expiratory dyspnea in a domestic feline due to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, because, according to our knowledge, there is no report on the occurrence of the disease in our country.

Brucellosis caused by Brucella abortus infection is a contagious zoonotic disease that causes abortions in cows, as well as joint and reproductive alterations in bulls. This study reports that eight (1.92%) out of a total of 469 aborted bovine fetuses analysed in a time frame of nine years were caused by B. abortus infection. The diagnosis was based on macroscopic, histological, microbiological, serological, immunohistochemical, and molecular findings. The gestational age of the fetuses studied ranged from 6 to 9 months. The main gross findings were purulent discharge from the nasal cavity, trachea and bronchi; pleural and pericardial fibrin deposits; and non-collapsed lungs with white spots in the parenchyma, and red areas in the apical lobes. Intercotyledonary areas of three placentas examined exhibited reddened areas, and the cotyledons exhibited well-defined, yellowish-white round areas with thickened walls on their surface. Microscopically, the most frequently observed lesions were necrosuppurative bronchopneumonia, interstitial pneumonia, and necrosuppurative placentitis with areas of vasculitis, mineralization, and thrombosis. Brucella abortus was isolated from fetal tissues of seven of the nine cases investigated. Immunohistochemical tests were positive in four cases, and PCR detected B. abortus genetic material in three cases. Infection by B. abortus should be considered a possible cause of abortion in cattle in southern Brazil. La brucelosis causada por Brucella abortus es una enfermedad zoonótica contagiosa que causa abortos en las vacas, así como alteraciones articulares y reproductivos en los toros. En 469 fetos bovinos abortados analizados en un período de nueve años, nueve (1,92%) se debieron a B. abortus infección. El diagnóstico se basó en los estudios de lesiones macroscópicas, histológicas, microbiológicas, serológicas, inmunohistoquímicas y hallazgos moleculares. La edad gestacional de los fetos osciló de 6 a 9 meses. Los principales hallazgos macroscópicos se caracterizaron por una descarga de pus en la cavidad nasal, tráquea y bronquios, y depósitos de fibrina pleural y pericárdico, además de los pulmones se han observado manchas blancas en el parénquima y las zonas rojas en los lóbulos apicales. En la región intercotiledonaria de tres placentas examinadas, hubo áreas enrojecidas intercaladas con zonas redondas de color amarillo-blanco bien definidos, con paredes engrosadas en la superficie de los cotiledones. Microscópicamente se observó bronconeumonía necrosupurativa, neumonía intersticial y placentitis necrosupurativa con áreas de vasculitis, la mineralización, y la trombosis. Brucella abortus fue aislado de los tejidos fetales de siete de los nueve casos investigados. La prueba de inmunohistoquímica fue positiva en cuatro casos, y la PCR amplifica el material genético de las bacterias en tres. La infección con B. abortus tiene que ser considerado como una posible causa de aborto en el ganado en el sur de Brasil.

An inherited disease of cattle, characterized by lysosomal storage of glycogen in several tissues, is reported. The disease was diagnosed in a Brahman herd in the municipality of Porto Lucena, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Affected calves, after one month of age, showed progressive difficulty to follow their mother, retarded growth, muscular weakness and tremors, lethargy and poor body condition. All affected calves were sired by the same bull. Necropsy was performed on three affected calves. The only gross lesion detected was paleness of the skeletal muscles of the trunk and limbs. Cytoplasmic vacuoles, the main histological lesion, were particularly evident in skeletal muscles, myocardium and Purkinje fibers, in neurons of the brain and spinal cord. Large amounts of periodic acid Schiff (PAS) positive granules were also observed in these most severely affected tissues. Pretreatment with diastase completely abolished the PAS reactivity. The 1057?TA, a lethal mutation in the gene of the acid alpha-glucosidase, which causes generalized glycogenosis in Brahman cattle, was detected by PCR in paraffin embedded tissues of affected animals on which post-mortem examination was performed. Clinical, histological and molecular findings were similar to previous descriptions of generalized glycogenosis in Brahman cattle in Australia. During a series of experiments attempting to reproduce clinically apparent bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BoHV-5) infections, a group of calves was inadvertently infected with bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV). Another group of calves was infected with BoHV-5 only. This paper reports the outcome of such infections. Two out of six calves solely infected with BoHV-5 displayed moderate to severe clinical signs. Three out of four calves of the group co-infected with BoHV-5 and BVDV developed severe clinical signs, two of them died. BoHV-5 virus was isolated to higher titres and for a longer period from the group of calves infected with both viruses. These results suggest that BVDV may enhance clinical signs induced by BoHV-5 and may also play a role in extending the period of BoHV-5 shedding. Durante a realização de experimentos envolvendo inoculações experimentais com herpesvírus bovino tipo 5 (BoHV-5), um grupo de bovinos foi acidentalmente também inoculado com vírus da diarréia viral bovina (BVDV). Os dados obtidos nesta co-infecção foram então comparados a aqueles observados em animais inoculados exclusivamente com BoHV-5. No grupo infectado com BoHV-5 somente, dois dos seis animais inoculados mostraram sinais clínicos de moderados a graves. No grupo co-infectado com BoHV-5 e BVDV, três dos quatro animais desenvolveram doença grave, e dois deles morreram. BoHV-5 foi isolado em títulos maiores e por um período de tempo mais longo no grupo co-infectado. Os resultados sugerem que o BVDV pode exacerbar os sinais clínicos induzidos pelo BoHV-5 e, ainda, aumentou os níveis de excreção deste último.
