vaccine hesitancy ,COVID-19 ,focus groups ,healthcare ,vaccination - Abstract
Even though vaccination has been regarded as historically one of the most successful public health interventions, vaccine hesitancy still remains an important health issue. In order to explore this issue, the authors conducted four asynchronous online focus groups with the total of 40 Croatian citizens. Drawing on iterative thematic analysis, three emerging overarching reasons of vaccine hesitancy were determined: risk perception (cost-benefit ratio), belief in natural immunity and institutional distrust. In addition, three possible cross-cutting topics emerged: communication with healthcare workers, influence of media, social media and the Internet, and COVID-19 pandemic. A widespread dissatisfaction with healthcare workers is tentatively explained by proposing the concept of ‘false autonomy’ of patients when making vaccination decisions. As for the COVID-19 context, the participants often cited their awareness of the profit-driven healthcare system in conjunction with the development of COVID-19 vaccines. The authors conclude by framing the study results into the wider social context of individualistic consumerism, postmodern health beliefs and the characteristics of Croatian healthcare system, as well by calling for more in-depth studies of vaccine hesitancy., Italian Sociological Review, V. 12 N. 2 (2022)

pandemic, infodemic, Croatia, media content analysis, coronavirus, information - Abstract
In addition to the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020, there has been a pandemic of information, misinformation and fake news connected with it, referred to by the World Health Organization as infodemic. Taking into consideration that timely, accurate and transparent provision of information is highly relevant in facing health risks, the media worldwide have invested into professional coverage of the topic. However, numerous online communication platforms have soon become flooded by incorrect, fabricated and sensationalist information. The aim of this paper is to comparatively analyse the infodemic in the context of Croatian web portals (112 texts from 23 web portals) in the first and second wave of the pandemic. Using the method of quantitative media content analysis, two foci were developed in the instrument: one connected with the discourse of/on scientists (3 codes) and the other with iterative thematic analysis (6 codes were used to uncover topics - the source, danger, vaccine, protective masks, distancing, immunity). Chi-square test was used to test the statistical significance of the difference between the two waves of the pandemic/infodemic. The results suggest there are four statistically significant differences - one related to the first focus (quoting scientists is more frequent in the second wave) and three to the second (topic of source of virus is less present in the texts appearing during the second wave of the pandemic, while topics of immunity and danger are significantly more represented in the second wave).

domestic violence, gender, interviews, safety, women, Croatia - Abstract
Although significant legal dimensions of equality have been achieved, there are still persistent social dimensions of the inequality of women. In an attempt to examine some reasons for this, we aimed to look into the personal experience, views and stories of women working in courts (judges), social services and the police force who professionally deal or have dealt with cases of domestic violence. Our analysis is based on semi–structured dialogic interviews as in–depth in–person conversations, reached based on chain– referral or snowball sampling. This qualitative approach does not provide a basis for generalization to the population, but is an important complement to quantitative approaches if one wishes to reduce reification and provide a thick description of the situation in the field. Thematic and narrative analysis of the data gathered in interviews (n = 21) is conducted, with the help of NVivo software. The results focus on the professional experience of tackling domestic violence cases, gender–based prejudice in the profession and the motivation of our interlocutors, enabling us to map relevant topics and concerns. The results suggest there are culturally specific resistance strategies in both women’s conduct and the reaction of the community. These strategies rely on and negotiate with traditional family arrangements, which might foster social cohesion and safety, particularly in predominantly rural regions. A theoretical background is found at the intersections of sociological and criminological theory where gender is mainstreamed into traditional perspectives.

rodna ravnopravnost, hrvatska kinematografija, iza kamere - Abstract

Although significant legal dimensions of equality have been achieved, there are still persistent social dimensions of inequality of women. In an attempt to examine some reasons for this, we aimed to look into personal experience, views and stories of women working in courts (judges), social services and the police who professionally deal with the cases of gender-based violence. Our analysis is based on semi- structured dialogic interviews as in-depth in-person conversations with concerned persons, reached based on chain-referral or snowball sampling. This qualitative approach does not provide the basis for generalization, but is an important complement to quantitative approaches if one wishes to reduce reification and provide a thick description of the situation on the field. Thematic and narrative analysis of the data gathered in interviews (N = 20) is conducted, with the help of NVivo software. The results enable the mapping of relevant topics and concerns as well as suggest there are culturally specific resistance strategies in both women’s conduct and the reaction of the community. These strategies rely on and negotiate with traditional family arrangements, which might foster social cohesion and safety, particularly in predominantly rural regions. The theoretical background is found primarily in Sylvia Walby's notion of gender regime and the modernization from private to public patriarchy, especially due to the fact that personal views and experience of professional women are analysed. Also, the overview of the modern urban-rural dichotomy as applied in sociological theory is given, together with the gender-aware criticism of its implicit androcentrism.

Croatia. Facebook. Hesitancy. Internet. Network. Social Media. Vaccination - Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present the overview of literature insights and research findings pertaining to the new media specificities, vaccination discourse on social media and ethical aspects of using them in social science research. These findings will serve us for the development of the analytic framework for conducting a semantic network analysis and multimodal critical analysis of vaccination discourse in two Facebook groups in Croatia. The paper is part of the objectives set within the project The Impact of the Internet and Internet Social Networking Sites on the Attitudes and Decisions about Vaccination, funded by the Croatian Science Foundation. The goals are to map pro and anti-vaccination points of view and arguments, identify influencers, look into the factors motivating anti-vaccination attitudes on social media, and analyse prevailing sentiments, themes, resistant concepts and/or arguments. Strategies and measures to overcome misinformation and vaccine hesitancy are thereby of continuous interest.

Croatia, development, gender equality, post-feminism, smart economics, women - Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyse smart economics argumentation of gender equality, with the data on gender equality index (GEI) in Croatia in mind, from the perspective of the most frequent critiques addressed at the so-called economic development theories of gender equality. The progress of Croatia towards achieving gender equality in the 21st century has been slow ; according to GEI, Croatia has retained the same rank among the EU countries since 2005 and was in 2017 farther away from the European average than in 2005. The general level of economic development is strongly connected with values, religion, cultural roles, legislation, marital pattern of resource allocation, labour market access, education, fertility, political participation etc. Smart economics treats gender equality as an integral part of economic development, whereby the gap between men and women (in human capital, economic opportunities, voice) is the main obstacle to achieving efficient development. Gender equality is thereby seen as an investment return. The World bank, UN and International Labour Organisation have referred to the double dividend of gender equality: it is tied to both millennium development goals (to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women) and economic efficiency increase. The main critiques of this approach, numerous in the last fifteen years, which we will discuss in this paper, revolve around the subordination of the intrinsic value of equality, feminisation of responsibility, lack of knowledge about the need for systemic transformation, over-emphasized efficiency, opportune pragmatism, post-feminism etc.

The aim of this study is to discuss postmodern attitudes to health in relation to vaccination hesitancy in Croatia based on focus group discussions, conducted asynchronously with 40 Croatian citizens in October 2020. The data were coded and analysed with the help of NVivo software. The study is part of the wider research project funded by the Croatian Science Foundation. Our data suggest that vaccination attitudes should be seen as a continuum ranging from ardent advocacy of mandatory vaccination to a complete refusal of any vaccine, whereby the term vaccine hesitant is reserved for a heterogenous group (where people can refuse only some vaccines, delay vaccine schedule, refuse non-obligatory vaccines etc.). The results of iterative thematic analysis reveal risk perception, distrust in the healthcare system and lifestyle factors as relevant determinants of vaccine hesitancy. As the attitudes connected with vaccine hesitancy are, among other factors, under the influence of wider socio-cultural context, in this paper the focus is put on examining our results in the broader context of postmodern health beliefs, which include but are not limited to the advocacy of a holistic approach and unobtrusive treatments, patient participation, harmony of body, mind and spirit etc.

vaccine hesitancy ,social context ,media ,information sources - Abstract
The aim of the research was to determine the influence of various media, social and institutional sources of information on attitudes about vaccination, i.e. on the belief in conspiracy theories in the field of vaccination. So far, some studies, especially in situations of vaccine confidence crises, showed that official sources of information (public media and the state institutions) and new sources of information, such as social media and the Internet, have different effects when it comes to vaccination attitudes. However, the topic is largely unexplored. The results of the research show that the Internet portals are emerging as a new factor in creating negative attitudes about vaccination, which calls for further research. The traditional sources of information (television, professional books and articles), although often used, do not have a one- way impact. Social institutions as sources of information create positive attitudes about vaccination, while the positive and strong influence of the family as a source of information on belief in vaccination conspiracy theories implies the possibility that negative information about vaccination is often exchanged within the family.

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to analyze the origin of different interpretations of the events connected with terrorism, with special emphasis put on different interpretations of causes and consequences of terrorism. The objective is to show that the same logic has perpetrated the causes of the problem and is being used to solve it. Design/Methods/Approach: This research into the social causes of terrorism leans against a critical theoretical perspective and uses a historical comparative method aimed at deconstructing some taken-for-granted perspectives regarding terrorism and its actors. It brings the understanding of the causes of terrorism into connection with the history of mutual relationships between today's main actors of global terrorism and anti-terrorism in the wish to explain the consequences of terrorism as resulting from the stable and continued relationship between the main actors. Findings: The analysis has shown that current approaches to dealing with the problem of terrorism are so strikingly unsuccessful because, among other reasons, they rely on the same logic that led to the problem in the first place and thus cannot be used to solve the problem. Current power relations between the actors of “terrorism” and “anti-terrorism” point to the need for a possible alternative approach to preventing the mutually complementing “terrorist” and “anti-terrorism” violence. Originality/Value: The greatest value of this analysis is that it offers a view of the problem of terrorism based in the tradition of sociological theory, particularly that of deviance, serving thus as an important complement to more customary criminalist, criminological, psychological and legal perspectives. Without such historically grounded and sociologically informed approach, critical perspective would not be possible. Brez takšnega zgodovinsko utemeljenega in sociološko podkrepljenega pristopa kritični pogledi niso možni.

glass ceiling, gender, inequality, workplace - Abstract
The aim of this paper is to provide a sociologically-based analysis of the phenomenon of glass ceiling in Croatia in comparison with the EU context and in eastern Croatia within the Croatian context. The purpose is to contribute to the analysis of the problematics of gender workplace discrimination and inequality and of women's access to all levels of professional hierarchy, with the focus on the concept of glass ceiling and both the challenges and criticism it faces us with. The mixed-methods approach used in this research includes both quantitative and qualitative focus: semi-structured interviews conducted in 2018 with women holding different top positions in business and the analysis of secondary data gathered from Croatian and European sources (Ombudsman's research on gender representation in companies in Croatia, Eurostat, ILO, McKinsey, UN, Croatian Bureau of Statistics etc.). The results suggest that general theses on more difficult and obstacle- laden advancement of women can be supported, that there are significantly more men in leading and management positions and that there are additional efforts that need to be make in order to achieve social gender equality apart from only formal and legislative equality. Gender inequality is pronouncedly present in the field of work, and particularly so above a certain top level, and awareness needs to be raised regarding huge costs of this situation growth-wise and development-wise.

gender based violence, solidarity, crisis, disaster, flood - Abstract
Our objective is to compare the criminogenic potential of crises resulting from war and natural disasters, respectively, as an indicator of a drop in solidarity, in relation to gender-based violence (GBV). Disasters usually lead to the weakening of social control, although some researchers consider this a myth. We will discuss previous research and seminal examples comparatively, and review main hypotheses, frequent myths and theoretical explanations of the rates of GBV in contexts of crises brought about by war and natural disasters. Then we will present results of our University of Zagreb-funded research on social control and deviance in disastrously flooded areas in Croatia in 2014, and compare them to the official data on reported GBV. Our results suggest that the rate of GBV in the context of crisis of solidarity, social control and cohesion brought about by natural disasters do not increase, unlike the rate of GBV in the context of war, which is extremely high. Theoretical explanation of this significant difference is based on studies of war and gender which see, among others, deep structures of patriarchy underlying socialization into gender identities as important factors in the reproduction of militarism. Raping of women is the most frequent form of GBV in war, and is a strategy of enemy feminisation as a form of symbolic domination. Our findings can help (social policy/education) reduce GBV as a global health and development problem that cannot be fully understood out of the context of social structure normativity – gender norms and gender roles, namely, support GBV and often make it tolerable or even invisible.

gender, aesthetics, power, consumerism - Abstract
Sociology has since its beginnings defined itself as science dealing with modern society, which means that the conception of being modern had necessarily preceded both its discourse in general and its discourse on modernization and/or development specifically. There are different approaches to defining the modern project, from Hegel's philosophical discourse on self-consciousness of an epoch to Foucault's diversification of meaning in various discursive fields. This research aims to analyse gendered subtext of early sociological discourse on modernization (in Marx, Weber, Durkheim and particularly Simmel). The results suggest that it is necessary to re-examine the assumptions and rethink the meanings of the gender difference based on which the discourse of modernization has fundamentally established itself and based on which it has operated. I will show on the example of commercialized aestheticization of women that research on gender and modernization needs to be conducted in situated and contextualized frameworks, whereby the female repressed from the phallogocentric matrix returns paradoxically through the effects of dehumanization, automatization, alienation and commodification, which are all also aspects of modernization. The relationship of women and history is thereby in no way simple, but reveals both continuities and transformations in dominating discourses and possible counter discourses.

rodna ravnopravnost, nulti kurikulum, obrazovanje, habitus, dispozitiv - Abstract

It brings the understanding of the causes of terrorism into connection with the history of mutual relationships between today's main actors of global terrorism and anti- terrorism in the wish to explain the consequences of terrorism as resulting from the stable and continued relationship between the main actors. Findings: The analysis has shown that current approaches to dealing with the problem of terrorism are so strikingly unsuccessful because, among other reasons, they rely on the same logic that led to the problem in the first place and thus cannot be used to solve the problem. Current power relations between the actors of “terrorism” and “anti- terrorism” point to the need for a possible alternative approach to preventing the mutually complementing “terrorist” and “anti-terrorism” violence. Originality/Value: The greatest value of this analysis is that it offers a view of the problem of terrorism based in the tradition of sociological theory, particularly that of deviance, serving thus as an important complement to more customary criminalist, criminological, psychological and legal perspectives. Without such historically grounded and sociologically informed approach, critical perspective would not be possible.

apocalypse ,Luhmann ,systems theory - Abstract
The narratives of the end, particularly the Bible-inspired ones containing apocalyptic imagery, have been studied for centuries. Sociological treatment of this subject has been primarily focussed on apocalyptic communities and millenarian movements, or their social setting (Sitz im Leben). The treatment of apocalypse in this article differs in that it is a sociological contribution which focuses on the aspect of genre in its systemic effects from the standpoint of Niklas Luhmann’s systems theory. The main interest is to point to the structural issues springing from the idea of imminent ending and its social potential. The author’s thesis is that fictions about the purpose and the flow of history from the beginning to the end satisfy, among other potential social functions, our systemic social needs. Various historical imaginings and projections of the world out of existence, despite their different content or politics of representation, seem to share a common systemic logic concerning operational closure and structural openness. Even though the system always seemingly tries to offer solutions to a variety of crises, the real systemic autopoietic interest is to ensure the mechanism that will continue generating new problems, new crises that it can try to solve – that way enabling us to imagine our significance in the space between our present existence and our always imminent nonexistence. The projection of an ending is an inherent feature functionally operative in systemic auto-reproduction. The extraordinary historical resilience of the belief that the end is coming despite historical disconfirmations (practised by various transformations of the belief or by deferrals of the end) springs from the recurring systemic need for adjustments in the interest of ‘reality’ and the control thereof. Thus, by looking into the narratives of the end, the article aims to investigate the systemic logic behind the sensemaking process, without losing the materiality of sociological ideas from sight or implying the map of the experience of the Other.

Vukovar ,predrasude ,mitovi - Abstract

The paper discusses the influence of fair play in sports on the construction of social values, and the intensity and directness of such influence, as well as possible mutuality of such social processes. The first part is dedicated to the definitions of basic terms and aims at establishing the theoretical framework for the discussion. After that, the attempt is made at answering the key question about the character of the influence of fair play in sports on social values and about the degree of universality of that influence, in the sense of answering the question where all the values and norms contained in the fair play sport attitude can be recognized. The third part deals with the relationship between declarative pledge for fair play and its realization and presence in sports and society alike. In the end, unused potential of the organized promotion of the idea of fair play outside sports is analysed, together with the need for strategic planning of the institutionalization of fair play relationships.

The influence of popular culture on young people is a well-described and researched place in literature, but the politics of the representation of femininity has an ambivalent place, ranging from emancipatory to enslaving interpretations of sexualized performances of femininity. That is why there is a need for local empirical research on concrete interpretations and reception of popular cultural images, narratives, and discourses among different social groups. The goals of this research are to map the basic themes, arguments and ways of negotiation that appear when high school students in focus groups interpret several music videos of popular songs in Croatia, with a special focus on the performance of femininity. The paper will present an overview of relevant literature that talks about the development of music videos, as well as femininity, gender stereotypes, gender roles, how we learn them, and where everything is shown to us. Furthermore, the paper presents the portrayal of women in the media and points to the sexualization of women in music videos and supports it with examples. The paper also analyses the literature on the influence of music videos on young people, guided by the question of how young people identify with their idols and characters from music videos, and shows examples of how young people see a typical female singer. To map the basic themes and narratives, the research uses focus groups in which high school students aged 16 from the Đakovo area participated. Participants were shown three music videos that were discussed according to a previously designed question guide. The results show that the objectification and sexualization of women and men as the target audience appear as the most common topics in the discussions of high school students about the performances of femininity in music videos. In the discussion about the meaning of the collected data, emphasis is placed on the issue of impact on young people.

Naglim razvojem suvremene tehnologije, dolazi između ostalog do razvoja novog okvira feminističke misli i djelovanja – cyberfeminizma. U Hrvatskoj početkom 90-ih godina prošlog stoljeća nastaju prvi cyberfeministički pokreti – elektronska konferencija Zamir/women i projekt Elektroničke vještice.

Povijesni pregled seksualnosti svjedoči o raznolikim pristupima ženskoj seksualnosti i čestim nastojanjima njezina prigušivanja. Teorijski pristupi tradicionalno su se doticali muške i ženske kontrole seksualnosti. Erotska plastičnost, kao nosivi pojam ovog završnog rada, označava stupanj do kojeg društvene i kulturne norme oblikuju seksualnu žudnju i ponašanje.
