Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a potent technique for analyzing and detecting various targets, including toxic ions, pesticides, and biomarkers, at the single-molecule level. The efficiency of SERS techniques relies heavily on the underlying SERS substrate, which is primarily responsible for the strong induction of localized plasmon resonance on nanostructures. Noble metals such as gold and silver were commonly used to fabricate SERS substrates, leveraging the electromagnetic mechanism (EM) to enhance the Raman signal. However, chemically synthesized nanoparticle-based SERS substrates suffer from low uniformity and reproducibility. Furthermore, the high cost associated with noble metals makes most SERS substrates expensive to produce. In this study, we present a straightforward method for fabricating a highly uniform and reproducible SERS substrate using a femtosecond laser-based 3D printer. Notably, our method offers good cost competitiveness since it requires only a minimal amount of gold coating for the SERS signal. Moreover, the proposed method exhibits exceptional versatility in SERS analysis and detection, catering to numerous targets in the field.

Microrobots that can be precisely guided to target lesions have been studied for in vivo medical applications. However, existing microrobots have challenges in vivo such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, actuation module, and intra- and postoperative imaging. This study reports microrobots visualized with real-time x-ray and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that can be magnetically guided to tumor feeding vessels for transcatheter liver chemoembolization in vivo. The microrobots, composed of a hydrogel-enveloped porous structure and magnetic nanoparticles, enable targeted delivery of therapeutic and imaging agents via magnetic guidance from the actuation module under real-time x-ray imaging. In addition, the microrobots can be tracked using MRI as postoperative imaging and then slowly degrade over time. The in vivo validation of microrobot system–mediated chemoembolization was demonstrated in a rat liver with a tumor model. The proposed microrobot provides an advanced medical robotic platform that can overcome the limitations of existing microrobots and current liver chemoembolization.

Spiders synthesize their web using a liquid bridge-to-solidification mechanism at the end of their glands. Inspired by this process, in this work, we fabricated micro-glue threads (μGTs, polymer microwires) by a simple "pinch and spread" process using just two fingertips. The μGTs exhibited excellent tensile strength (∼50 GPa), comparable to those of spider silk and biological fibers. The chemical, physical, and mechanical properties of the μGTs were investigated, and it was confirmed that the thickness of the μGTs could be controlled by ethanol treatment in varying concentrations. Moreover, electrically conductive μGTs were easily fabricated by simply mixing them with various nanomaterials such as gold nanoparticles, zinc oxide nanowires, and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Interestingly, the conductive μGTs, fabricated using rGO, exhibited remarkable electrical conductivity (0.45 μS) compared to those fabricated using other materials. The conductive μGTs are applicable not only to NO2 gas sensing but also as electrical fuselike materials that melt when the humidity increases. Collectively, the results present μGTs as cost-effective, simple, and versatile materials, which enables their application in a variety of sensors.

As wireless capsule endoscope (WCE) technology has advanced, various studies were published on WCEs with functional modules for the diagnosis and treatment of problems in the digestive system. However, when additional functional modules are added the physical size of the WCEs will increase, making them more difficult for patients to comfortably swallow. Moreover, there are limitations when it comes to adding multi-functional modules to the WCEs due to the size of the digestive tract itself. This article introduces a controllable modular capsule endoscope driven by an electromagnetic actuation (EMA) system. The modular capsules are divided into a driving capsule and a functional capsule. Capsules with different functions are swallowed in sequence and then recombination, transportation and separation functions are carried out under the control of the EMA system while in the stomach, this approach solves the size limitation issues faced by multi-functional capsule endoscopes. The recombination and separation functions make use of a characteristic of soft magnetic materials so that their magnetization direction can be changed easily. These functions are made possible by the addition of a soft magnet to the capsule together with the precise control of magnetic fields provided by the EMA system.

Microscale and nanoscale robots, frequently referred to as future cargo systems for targeted drug delivery, can effectively convert magnetic energy into locomotion. However, navigating and imaging them within a complex colloidal vascular system at a clinical scale is exigent. Hence, a more precise and enhanced hybrid control navigation and imaging system is necessary. Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) has been successfully applied to visualize the ensemble of superparamagnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with high temporal sensitivity. MPI uses the concept of field-free point (FFP) mechanism in the principal magnetic field. The gradient magnetic field (|∇B|) of MPI scanners can generate sufficient magnetic force in MNPs, hence, it has been recently used to navigate nanosized particles and micron-sized swimmers. In this article, we present a simulation analysis of the optimized navigation of an ensemble of microsized polymer MNP-based drug carriers in blood vessels. Initially, an ideal two-dimensional FFP case is employed for the basic optimization of the FFP position to achieve efficient navigation. Thereafter, a nine-coil electromagnetic actuation simulation system is developed to generate and manipulate the FFP position and |∇B|. Under certain vessel and fluid conditions, the particle trajectories of different ferromagnetic polymer ratios and |∇B| were compared to optimize the FFP position.

Targeted drug delivery using a microrobot is a promising technique capable of overcoming the limitations of conventional chemotherapy that relies on body circulation. However, most studies of microrobots used for drug delivery have only demonstrated simple mobility rather than precise targeting methods and prove the possibility of biodegradation of implanted microrobots after drug delivery. In this study, magnetically guided self-rolled microrobot that enables autonomous navigation-based targeted drug delivery, real-time X-ray imaging, and microrobot retrieval is proposed. The microrobot, composed of a self-rolled body that is printed using focused light and a surface with magnetic nanoparticles attached, demonstrates the loading of doxorubicin and an X-ray contrast agent for cancer therapy and X-ray imaging. The microrobot is precisely mobilized to the lesion site through automated targeting using magnetic field control of an electromagnetic actuation system under real-time X-ray imaging. The photothermal effect using near-infrared light reveals rapid drug release of the microrobot located at the lesion site. After drug delivery, the microrobot is recovered without potential toxicity by implantation or degradation using a magnetic-field-switchable coiled catheter. This microrobotic approach using automated control method of the therapeutic agents-loaded microrobot has potential use in precise localized drug delivery systems.

Microrobots have been demonstrated to have the potential in medical approaches, such as for targeted drug delivery. However, real-time tracking and imaging are still one of the major issues faced by microrobots. Here, we fabricated helical microrobots based on self-folding technique, and we performed double coating of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to the surface of microrobots to enhance the image quality under X-ray. The result shows that, we successfully coated the AuNPs into the self-rolled microrobots, and it increases the image quality when compared to non-coated microrobots. Despite the fact that there still remain some challenges to achieve successful applications of microrobots, we believe that the potential of this study can contribute to reduce the challenges faces in the medical microrobot fields.

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs), which are thought to be the main candidate for metastasis, are gaining importance owing to their potential impact on human health and public welfare. For capturing CTCs, antigen-antibody interaction has been used in which specific antigens expressed on cell surface of CTCs can be bound to antibodies immobilized on substrates. Conventional detection methods for CTCs have often suffered not only from relatively low antigen-antibody coupling efficiency but also from cumbersome fabrication processes of micro/nano-structures for CTCs capture. Herein, we report a facile, robust antibody-based CTCs detection technique using centrifugal force, which can enhance the capturing efficacy of CTCs. We validate chemical functionalization process of antibodies on a silica substrate by using atomic force microscopy. Furthermore, it turned out that the centrifugal force from a benchtop centrifuge is enough to produce a ~2.3-fold increase in capture yield of CTCs through enhancement of binding avidity between CTCs and the antibodies. Our result points out the great potential of our method for practical application in CTCs diagnostics and opens a new avenue for biological and chemical sensing.

Contamination of foods by mycotoxins is a common yet serious problem. Owing to the increase in consumption of fresh produce, consumers have become aware of food safety issues caused by mycotoxins. Therefore, rapid and sensitive mycotoxin detection is in great demand in fields such as food safety and public health. Here we report a single-step luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) aptasensor for mycotoxin detection. To accomplish the single-step sensor, our sensor was constructed by linking a quencher-labeled aptamer through a linker to the surface of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). Our LRET aptasensor is composed of Mn2+-doped NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+ UCNPs as the LRET donor, and black hole quencher 3 (BHQ3) as the acceptor. The maximum quenching efficiency is obtained by modulating the linker length, which controls the distance between the quencher and the UCNPs. The densely packed nanovilli structure enhanced the Raman signal, forming hotspots owing to its large surface area. Using experiments and electromagnetic simulations, we optimized the nanovilli structure as a SERS sensor. The sandwich-type aptasensor was designed using an aptamer and 4-Phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione-methylene blue complex. The nanovilli-based aptasensor could sensitively detect various concentrations of 25-hydroxy vitamin D3, ranging from those found in deficient to excess conditions. The detection limit of the nanovilli-based sandwich-type aptasensor for 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 was 0.001 ng/mL, which is much lower than the deficiency concentration, and was detectable even in the human serum. In addition, our proposed sensor exhibited good repeatability (17.76%) and reproducibility (7.47%). Moreover, the nanovilli-based sandwich-type SERS aptasensor could selectively distinguish 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 from other vitamins. The silver nanovilli-based sandwich-type surface enhanced Raman scattering aptasensor opens a new avenue for the development of a bio-inspired vitamin-sensing platform.

The concept of an active drug delivery and controlled drug release using microrobot system has attracted attention over the past decade. However, developing these microrobot system is hindered by the low drug release rate upon external stimuli, such as an alternating magnetic field or light, with a long stimulation period (>40% release upon 10 min stimulation). This study evaluated using self-rolled helical microrobots to provide a controlled drug delivery system that uses magnetic manipulation and provides for highly efficient drug release. The rapid and simple fabrication of helical microrobots that change shape upon exposure to protic/aprotic stimuli was demonstrated using a single-layer self-folding technique. The self-folded helical microrobots navigated in the desired direction using a rotating magnetic field produced by an electromagnetic actuator. After arrival at the target location, non-covalently bonded anti-cancer drugs were released during a short period of ultrasound stimulation. The results demonstrate that, with 1 min of ultrasound stimulation, more than 90% of drug release was achieved. This efficient drug release system could enable the practical application of a microrobot-based drug delivery system.

There are challenges in developing practically viable biopolymer-based actuators with ecofriendly, biocompatible, and biodegradable functionalities. Therefore, we propose a cellulose acetate (CA)-based ecofriendly soft-ionic networking actuator consisting of multifunctional additive polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), highly conductive ammonia-functionalized graphene nanoplatelets (AFGNPs), ionic liquids (IL), and flexible conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxuthiopene)-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) as an electrode. The proposed actuator exhibits a large bending displacement and short response time in an open-air environment, resulting from its enhanced electro-chemo-mechanical properties and strong ionic and interfacial interactions. In comparison with CA/PVDF-IL actuator, the CA/PVDF–IL–AFGNPs actuator demonstrates a considerably increased IL uptake and ion-exchange capacity of up to 71.04% and 300.6%, respectively, and an increase in the specific capacitance by over 3.64 times, which lead to bending actuation performances 2.21 and 1.87 times greater, respectively, under AC (4 V) and DC (4 V). Moreover, we demonstrate that a CA/PVDF–IL–AFGNPs actuator with a hierarchical structure shows values that are 1.32, 1.5, and 1.74 times larger than those of a planar actuator in DC (4 V), AC (3 V), and blocking force (4 V), respectively. The developed high-performance CA/PVDF–AFGNPs and the hierarchical surface texture of the patterned CA/PVDF–IL–AFGNPs actuators present these extraordinary achievements together with environmentally friendly materials, a low driving voltage, easy manufacturing, and high actuation performances. Therefore, they can be candidates for human-friendly products (e.g., biomedical devices, bioinspired robots, and soft haptic devices).

Algal photosynthesis is considered to be a sustainable, alternative, and renewable solution to generating green energy. For high-productivity algaculture in diverse local environments, a high-throughput screening method is needed to select algal strains from naturally available or genetically engineered strains. Herein, we present an integrated plasmonic photobioreactor for rapid, high-throughput screening of microalgae. Our 3D nanoplasmonic optical cavity-based photobioreactor permits the amplification of a selective wavelength favorable to photosynthesis in the cavity. The hemispheric plasmonic cavity allows intercellular interaction to be promoted in the optically favorable milieu and also permits effective visual examination of algal growth. Using Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, we demonstrated a 2-fold enhanced growth rate and a 1.5-fold lipid production rate with no distinctive lag phase. By facilitating growth and biomass conversion rates, the integrated microalgae analysis platform will serve as rapid microalgae screening platforms for biofuel applications.

Porous noble metal nanoparticles exhibit many attractive nanoplasmonic features, and these structures have potential applications in many fields. However, such applications have been hindered by a lack of synthetic methods with the ability to mass-produce mono-disperse nanoparticles. Current synthetic approaches to porous gold nanostructure fabrication involve galvanic replacement approaches or electrochemical deposition methods that are generally limited by stringent multi-step protocols and relatively low yields. Here, we introduce the facile synthesis of scalable, mono-disperse, mesoporous gold nanoparticles (MPGNs) using an acidic emulsification method. This method facilitates high synthetic yields (>93%) and tunable particle sizes (130–400 nm). MPGNs exhibit enhanced payloads of gadolinium (Gd), a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging. Additionally, they permit photo-thermal conversion under near-infrared light (NIR) irradiation due to the increased surface area to volume ratio and the unique, structure-mediated LSPR effect. Specifically, MPGNs fabricated using our method provided Gd payloads 2–4 orders of magnitude greater than previously reported theranostic nano-probes. We believe that our novel synthetic technique will not only contribute to large-scale production of homogeneous porous gold nanoparticles, but will also promote further research in porous noble metal nanostructures.

Untethered miniature robots have attracted attention in biomedical fields because it could enable various in vivo applications, such as delivering stem cells or tissue sampling from the conventionally inaccessible locations. However, the average velocity of existing soft polymer-based miniature robot remains inefficient for practical application. Here, we developed a chained magnetic microparticles-embedded elastomer based magnetically actuated miniature walking soft robot with a high average velocity (∼ 2.7 mm/s), which is higher than conventional soft polymer-based robots with similar dimension. To maximize average velocity, we optimized magnetization of the robot by controlling the alignment of the magnetic microparticles. We also introduced “legs” on the miniature robot to efficiently convert transversal motion to longitudinal motion. Also, the robot poses high reversible stretchability (∼ 845 %). Ionic-type artificial muscles with eco-friendly, biodegradable, and biocompatible functionalities have attracted attention for a wide range of potential applications in wearable electronics, soft haptic-feedback systems, and active biomedical devices. Here, we report on the development of an ecofriendly high-performance ionic soft actuator based on biofriendly cellulose acetate (CA), graphene nanopowders (GN), ionic liquid (IL) as a plasticizer, and biofriendly-flexible-nonmetallic conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiopene)-polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT: PSS) as an electrode, thereby realizing a novel ecofriendly CA-IL-GN actuator with a large bending mechanical deformation and a fast response time. The proposed CA-IL-GN (0.2 wt%) nanocomposite membrane exhibited dramatic increments in specific capacitance (2.92 times) and Young’s modulus (2.38 times), thus leading to a 2.9 times larger bending deformation and a 4.8 times faster response than those of pure CA-IL actuator. Therefore, the developed ecofriendly high-performance CA-IL-GN actuator can be considered to be a promising candidate for human-friendly electronics, including artificial muscles, flexible haptic devices, soft wearable devices, and bio-medical devices, due to its cost-effectiveness, large bending mechanical actuation, fast response, and bio-friendly functionalities.

We have developed pyrene-modified magnetic polyaniline nanoparticles (MPANs), a hybridization of MnFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and polyaniline (PANI) with pyrene as a cross-linker, for diagnosis by simultaneous magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and photothermal therapy. In general, the strong affinity between PANI molecules, owing to interchain hydrogen bonding and the π–π interactions mediated by their aromatic composition, hinders the successful synthesis of complexes of PANI with inorganic materials. To overcome this obstacle, we used pyrene as a cross-linker to synthesize a stable complex of PANI with MNPs. We first modified the hydrophobic MNPs with pyrene through a hydrophobic interaction and then formed a complex with PANI. The pyrene-induced π–π interactions between the pyrene molecules on the MNPs and PANI reduced the affinity between the PANI molecules, and the strong affinity between the PANI molecules and MNPs rendered stable nanocomplexes of MPANs. Finally, Cetuximab-conjugated MPANs were fully tested for simultaneous diagnosis by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from superparamagnetic MnFe2O4 and photothermal ablation therapy from the near-infrared absorbing characteristics of PANI in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) overexpressed cancer cells (A-431 cells) in vitro.

Frequency upconversion activated with lanthanide has attracted attention in various real-world applications, because it is far simpler and more efficient than traditional nonlinear susceptibility-based frequency upconversion, such as second harmonic generation. However, the quantum yield of frequency upconversion of lanthanide-based upconversion nanocrystals remains inefficient for practical applications, and spatial control of upconverted emission is not yet developed. Here, we developed an asymmetric nanocrescent antenna on upconversion nanocrystal (ANAU) to deliver excitation light effectively to the core of upconversion nanocrystal by nanofocusing light and generating asymmetric frequency upconverted emission concentrated toward the tip region. ANAUs were fabricated by high-angle deposition (60°) of gold (Au) on the isolated upconversion nanoparticles supported by nanopillars then moved to refractive-index matched substrate for orientation-dependent upconversion luminescence analysis in the single-nanoparticle scale. We studied shape-dependent nanofocusing efficiency of nanocrescent antennae as a function of the tip-to-tip distance by modulating the deposition angle. The generation of asymmetric frequency upconverted emission toward the tip region was simulated by the asymmetric far-field radiation pattern of dipoles in the nanocrescent antenna and experimentally demonstrated by the orientation-dependent photon intensity of frequency upconverted emission of an ANAU. This finding provides a new way to improve frequency upconversion using an antenna, which locally increases the excitation light and generates the radiation power to certain directions for various applications.

Here, wire-framed Au nanobundles (WNBs), which consist of randomly oriented and mutually connected Au wires to form a bundle shape, are synthesized. In contrast to conventional nanoparticles (spheres, rods, cubes, and stars), which exhibit nanostructure only on the surface, cross-sectional view image shows that WNBs have nanostructures in a whole volume. By using this specific property of WNBs, an externally controllable multistep photothermic-driven drug release (PDR) system is demonstrated for in vivo cancer treatment. In contrast to conventional nanoparticles that encapsulate a drug on their surface, WNBs preserve the drug payload in the overall inner volume, providing a drug loading capacity sufficient for cancer therapy. An improved in vivo therapeutic efficacy of PDR therapy is also demonstrated by delivering sufficient amount of drugs to the target tumor region.

By loading Gd(III) inside NIR-absorbing polyaniline nanostructures, a novel diagnostic and photothermal agent with enhanced MR sensitivity, targeting ability, and photothermal ability to treat epithelial cancer is developed.

Carboxymethyl-dextran (CM-dextran) replaced the hydrophobic oleylamine ligands on the surfaces of MnO nanoparticles, rendering them highly water-soluble by allowing direct contact with excited water protons. Solution MRI studies of the two types of nanoparticles, exchanged and bilayered, with different core sizes have shown that the exchanged ligand structure exhibits significantly enhanced longitudinal relaxation. The modification with dextran converted the nanoparticles into effective T1 MRI contrast agents, as well as promoting strong interactions with macrophages. Thus, it is a potential MR contrast agent for visualizing inflammatory macrophages.

Well-designed nanoparticle-mediated, image-guided cancer therapy has attracted interest for increasing the efficacy of cancer treatment. A new class of smart theragnostic nanoprobes employing cetuximab (CET)-conjugated polyethylene glycol (PEG)ylated gold nanorods (CET-PGNRs) is presented; these nanoprobes target epithelial cancer cells using near-infrared light. The cetyltrimethylammonium bromide bilayer on GNRs is replaced with heterobifunctional PEG (COOH-PEG-SH) to serve as a biocompatible stabilizer and to increase specificity. The carboxylated GNRs are further functionalized with CET using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC-NHS) chemistry. To assess the potential of such GNRs, their optical properties, biocompatibility, colloidal stability, in vitro/in vivo binding affinities for cancer cells, absorption imaging, and photothermal therapy effects are investigated. CET-PGNRs exhibit excellent tumor targeting ability and strong potential for simultaneous absorption imaging and photothermal ablation of epithelial cancer cells.

Well-designed photothermal nanomaterials have attractedthe interest of many scientists pursuing a better means toaccurately diagnose cancer and assess the efficacy of treat-ment, because these materials enable therapies in which thetumor region is pin-pointed with a laser-guided light sourcewithout surgical intervention.

Zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO NWs) have been attempted to various applications, such as piezoelectric devices, energy harvesting devices, self-powered nanosensors, and biomedical devices. However, recent reports have shown the toxic effect of ZnO NWs. In this report, we described the detection of ZnO NWs, for the first time using reduced graphene oxide (RGO) wrapping method. By wrapping RGO to ZnO NW (RGO–ZnO NW), we are able to aggregate ZnO NWs and increase the sensing performance. The detection measurement is based on the resonance frequency shift derived from mass variation of RGO–ZnO NW adsorption on the DNA immobilized resonator. The resonator is able to detect ZnO NWs with detection limit of 100 ng mL −1 which is 2 order below the fatal toxic concentration of ZnO NWs in Human Monocyte Macrophages (HMMs). Furthermore, the resonator is able to detect ZnO NWs in real tap water, showing the potential as ZnO NWs screening platform in real environmental aqua system.

To detect chemical or biological threats, it is crucial that sensor devices can differentiate various target molecules. In general, each different sensing method has its own strengths and weaknesses due to their respective limitations. For example, although resonant sensors have high sensitivity, they are not able to discriminate target molecules. At the same time, although surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy is a representative label-free detection method that can discriminate target molecules, its fabrication is often complex and expensive. Here we present a label-free multimodal nanoporous resonator-based system for small molecule detection and discrimination that combines the strengths of each of these sensing methods. Our approach is not only able to improve the sensitivity of the resonant sensor but it can also discriminate the target molecules. Furthermore, the fabrication process is swift (lasting < 3 min) and convenient.

By using DNA linkers, we are able to conjugate self-crosslinked SWNTs which could be detected upon hybridization with a DNA immobilized resonator. The DNA immobilized resonator is able to detect SWNTs with a detection limit of 10 ng ml(-1) which was 2-3 orders of magnitude smaller than the reported SWNT toxicity concentration.

Hybrid organic-inorganic near-infrared responsive magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized for theragnosis combined with localized therapy. In detail, inorganic super-paramagnetic nanoparticles were embedded inside organic polyaniline matrix, which enables localized photothermal therapy upon NIR illumination under intracellular acidic/oxidative condition. In this structure, super-paramagnetic nanoparticle works as MRI contrast agent, that enables the visualization of a tumor and polyaniline works for near-infrared responsive tumor ablation.

The ultrasensitive and selective diagnosis along with efficient therapy in earliest stage of cancer has been enormously highlighted by a better means to treat the cancer. Herein, Gd (III) chelated polyaniline nanoparticles (GPNPs) was synthesized to be served as a highly T 1 enhanced contrast agents and Near-Infrared photothermal therapy probes. In addition, therapeutic antibody was conjugated on the surface of GPNPs for the targeted theragnosis. Fabricated GPNPs significantly reduced the T 1 of water protons with as well as represented photothermal ability. The physicochemical properties and biocompatibilities of GNPSs were fully characterized and GPNPs exhibited excellent tumor targeting ability. Consequently, GPNPs exhibited strong potential for efficient diagnosis of cancer in MR imaging and photothermal ablation of epithelial cancer cells.
