Ice shelves control sea-level rise through frictional resistance, which slows the seaward flow of grounded glacial ice. Evidence from around Antarctica indicates that ice shelves are thinning and weakening, primarily driven by warm ocean water entering into the shelf cavities. We have identified a mechanism for ice shelf destabilization where basal channels underneath the shelves cause ice thinning that drives fracture perpendicular to flow. These channels also result in ice surface deformation, which diverts supraglacial rivers into the transverse fractures. We report direct evidence that a major 2016 calving event at Nansen Ice Shelf in the Ross Sea was the result of fracture driven by such channelized thinning and demonstrate that similar basal channel-driven transverse fractures occur elsewhere in Greenland and Antarctica. In the event of increased basal and surface melt resulting from rising ocean and air temperatures, ice shelves will become increasingly vulnerable to these tandem effects of basal channel destabilization.

Unknown basal characteristics limit our ability to simulate the subglacial hydrology of rapidly melting contemporary ice sheets. Sediment-based landforms generated beneath Late Pleistocene ice sheets, together with detailed digital elevation models, offer a valuable means of testing basal hydrology models, which describe the flow and dynamics of water in the subglacial system. However, to date no work has evaluated how well process-based subglacial hydrology models represent the hypothesized conditions associated with glaciofluvial landform formation in the palaeo setting. Previous work comparing model output to geomorphological evidence has typically done so using models that do not resolve subglacial processes and instead express likely subglacial water pathways. Here, we explore the ability of the Glacier Drainage System model (GlaDS), a process-based subglacial hydrology model, to represent the genesis conditions associated with a specific glaciofluvial landform termed "murtoos". Distinctive triangular landforms found throughout Finland and Sweden, murtoos are hypothesized to form 40–60 km from the former Fennoscandian Ice Sheet margin within a "semi-distributed" system at the onset of channelized drainage in small cavities where water pressure is equal to or exceeds ice overburden pressure. Concentrating within a specific ice lobe of the former Fennoscandian Ice Sheet and using digital elevation models with a simulated former ice surface geometry, we forced GlaDS with transient surface melt and explored the sensitivity of our model outcomes to parameter decisions such as the system conductivity and bed topography. Our model outputs closely match the general spacing, direction, and complexity of eskers and mapped assemblages of features related to subglacial drainage in "meltwater routes". Many of the predictions for murtoo formation are produced by the model, including the location of water pressure equal to ice overburden, the onset of channelized drainage, the transition in drainage modes, and importantly the seasonal sequence of drainage conditions inferred from murtoo sedimentology. These conclusions are largely robust to a range of parameter decisions, and we explore seasonal and inter-annual drainage behaviour associated with murtoo zones and meltwater pathways. Our results demonstrate that examining palaeo basal topography alongside subglacial hydrology model outputs holds promise for the mutually beneficial analyses of palaeo and contemporary ice sheets to assess the controls of hydrology on ice dynamics and subglacial landform evolution. In 2018 the first subglacial lake in the Canadian Arctic was proposed to exist beneath the Devon Ice Cap, based on the analysis of airborne radar data. Here, we report a new interpretation of the subglacial material beneath the Devon Ice Cap, supported by data acquired from multiple surface-based geophysical methods in 2022. The geophysical data recorded included 9 km of active-source seismic-reflection profiles, seven transient electromagnetic (TEM) soundings, and 17 magnetotellurics (MT) stations. These surface-based geophysical datasets were collected above the inferred locations of the subglacial lakes and show no evidence for the presence of subglacial water. The acoustic impedance of the subglacial material, estimated from the seismic data, is 9.49 ± 1.92 × 10 6 kg m -2 s -1 , comparable to consolidated or frozen sediment. The resistivity models obtained by inversion of both the TEM and MT measurements show the presence of highly resistive rock layers (1000–100 000 Ω m) directly beneath the ice. Re-evaluation of the airborne reflectivity data shows that the radar attenuation rates were likely overestimated, leading to an overestimation of the basal reflectivity in the original radar studies. Here, we derive new radar attenuation rates using the temperature- and chemistry-dependent Arrhenius equation, and when applied to correct the returned bed power, the bed power does not meet the basal reflectivity threshold expected over subglacial water. Meltwater forms at the base of the Antarctic Ice Sheet due to geothermal heat flux (GHF) and basal frictional dissipation. Despite the relatively small volume, this water has a profound effect on ice-sheet dynamics. However, subglacial melting and hydrology in Antarctica remain highly uncertain, limiting our ability to assess their impact on ice-sheet dynamics. Here we examine subglacial hydrology within the Amery Ice Shelf catchment, East Antarctica, using the subglacial hydrology model GlaDS. We calculate subglacial melt rates using a higher-order ice-flow model and two GHF estimates. We find a catchment-wide melt rate of 7.03 Gt year 1 (standard deviation = 1.94 Gt year 1), which is =50% greater than previous estimates. The contribution from basal dissipation is approximately 40% of that from GHF. However, beneath fast-flowing ice streams, basal dissipation is an order of magnitude larger than GHF, leading to a significant increase in channelized subglacial flux upstream of the grounding line. We validate GlaDS using high-resolution interferometric-swath radar altimetry, with which we detect active subglacial lakes and fine-scale ice-shelf basal melting. We find a network of subglacial channels that connects areas of deep subglacial water coincident with active subglacial lakes, and channelized discharge at the grounding line coinciding with enhanced ice-shelf basal melting. The concentrated discharge of meltwater provides 36% of the freshwater released into the iceshelf cavity, in addition to ice-shelf basal melting. This suggests that ice-shelf basal melting is strongly influenced by subglacial hydrology and could be affected by future changes in subglacial discharge, such as lake drainage or channel rerouting. Plain Language Summary Melting beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet is relatively low, but the pattern of melting and meltwater drainage is important for controlling the flow of the overlying ice. Melting occurs due to geothermal heating from the underlying bedrock and heat generated from friction as the ice slides over the bedrock. Despite its importance, we know very little about melting beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Here we use a numerical model to calculate meltwater drainage pathways beneath part of the ice sheet that flows into the Amery Ice Shelf, East Antarctica. We find that total melting is 7 gigatonnes per year. This is 50% more than previous studies because our model can resolve high melting beneath areas where the ice sheet is flowing fast. Using satellite observations of ice-sheet surface elevation change, we detect the filling and draining of lakes at the base of the ice sheet and ocean melting beneath the floating ice shelf. We use these observations to validate the modeled meltwater drainage pathways at the base of the ice sheet. Hydrologic pathways beneath ice sheets and glaciers play an important role in regulating ice flow. Antarctica has experienced, and will continue to experience, changes in ice dynamics and geometry, but the associated changes in subglacial hydrology have received less attention. Here, we use the GlaDS subglacial hydrology model to examine drainage evolution beneath an idealised Antarctic glacier in response to steepening ice surface slopes, accelerating ice velocities and subglacial lake drainages. Ice surface slope changes exerted a dominant influence, redirecting basal water to different outlet locations and substantially increasing channelised discharge crossing the grounding line. Faster ice velocities had comparatively negligible effects. Subglacial lake drainage results indicated that lake refilling times play a key role in drainage system evolution, with lake flux more readily accommodated following shorter refilling times. Our findings are significant for vulnerable Antarctic regions currently experiencing dynamic thinning since subglacial water re-routing could destabilise ice shelves through enhanced sub-shelf melting, potentially hastening irreversible retreat. These changes could also affect subglacial lake activity. We, therefore, emphasise that including a nuanced and complex representation of subglacial hydrology in ice-sheet models could provide critical information on the timing and magnitude of sea-level change contributions from Antarctica. This study presents the first light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based morphometric description of a water blister from a past ice-sheet bed caused by rapid supraglacial drainage. The blister formed during the rapid early Holocene deglaciation of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet (FIS). It is located in southwest Finland within a subglacial meltwater route interpreted to represent the transition from a distributed to a channelized drainage system. A LiDAR digital elevation model was supplemented with sedimentological and ground-penetrating radar data on blister outflow channels and sedimentology of downflow polymorphous mounds and ridges (PMRs). Unlike the water blisters recorded from the rapid drainage of supraglacial lakes on the Greenland Ice Sheet, the smaller blister size here was either due to crevasse or moulin drainage, or was a supraglacial lake drainage that tapped into a pre-existing, relatively efficient drainage system and related semi-sorted sediments, promoting rapid drainage and reworking of PMRs along the meltwater route. The preservation potential or exposure probability of blister marks is presumably low but they can provide important information about evolution of subglacial drainage systems that is of value to modern interpretations of glacial hydrology. Basal sliding in Antarctic glaciers is often modeled using a friction law that relates basal shear stresses to the effective pressure. As few ice sheet models are dynamically coupled to subglacial hydrology models, variability in subglacial hydrology associated with the effective pressure is often implicitly captured in the basal friction coefficient – an unknown parameter in the basal friction law. We investigate the impact of using effective pressures calculated from the Glacier Drainage System (GlaDS) model on basal friction coefficients calculated using inverse methods in the Ice-sheet and Sea-level System Model (ISSM) at Denman Glacier, East Antarctica, for the Schoof and Budd friction laws. For the Schoof friction law, a positive correlation emerges between the GlaDS effective pressure and basal friction coefficient in regions of fast ice flow. Using GlaDS effective pressures generally leads to smoother basal friction coefficients and basal shear stresses, and larger differences between the simulated and observed ice surface velocities compared with using an effective pressure equal to the ice overburden pressure plus the gravitational potential energy of the water. Compared with the Budd friction law, the Schoof friction law offers improved capabilities in capturing the spatial variations associated with known physics of the subglacial hydrology. Our results indicate that ice sheet model representation of basal sliding is more realistic when using direct outputs from a subglacial hydrology model, demonstrating the importance of coupling between ice sheet and subglacial hydrological systems. However, using our outputs we have also developed an empirical parameterization of effective pressure that improves the application of the Schoof friction law without requiring explicit hydrological modeling. Supraglacial drainage networks play an integral role in both glacier dynamics and run-off timing, and mapping them provides insight into their role in glacial systems. Here we present a reproducible approach for semi-automated mapping of supraglacial hydrologic features, which complements existing work in automated and manual mapping by providing clear definitions for identification of features. This framework uses a digital terrain model (DTM) to identify potential flow routes on the glacier surface, which are then classified using a set of standardized rules based on the DTM and an orthomosaic. We found that the normalized difference water index calculated from digital imagery was influenced by image brightness and introduce a new approach using average RGB values to correct for this. Using this framework we mapped supraglacial drainage networks at Nàłùdäy and Thores Glacier, Canada. The framework was easier to implement with high-resolution (0.5 m) imagery and DTMs, compared to data with lower resolution (10 m), due to the increased detail in topography and feature boundaries at high-resolution. Lower-resolution data captured larger streams (>2 pixels wide), however, indicating that the framework can still be used at this resolution. Petermann Glacier is a major outlet glacier of northern Greenland that drains a marine‐based basin vulnerable to destabilization from enhanced oceanic and atmospheric forcings. Using satellite radar interferometry data from the Sentinel‐1a/b missions, we observe a seasonal glacier acceleration of 15% in the summer, from 1,250 to 1,500 m/yr near the grounding line, but the physical drivers of this seasonality have not been elucidated. Here, we use a subglacial hydrology model coupled one‐way to an ice sheet model to evaluate the role of subglacial hydrology as a physical mechanism explaining the seasonal acceleration. We find excellent agreement between the observed and predicted velocity in terms of timing and magnitude with the addition of an applied lower limit on effective pressure of 6% of ice overburden pressure. We conclude that seasonal changes in subglacial hydrology are sufficient to explain the observed seasonal speed up of Petermann Glacier. Plain Language Summary: Petermann Glacier is one of the largest glaciers in northern Greenland with a sea‐level rise potential of about half a meter. In recent years, extensive satellite data have become available which provide frequent and widespread observations over much of the Greenland ice sheet, including Petermann. Access to such records provides the opportunity to investigate changes in glacier dynamics taking place over much smaller time periods. We see that in the summer Petermann's speed increases by about 15% from 1,250 to 1,500 m/year near the grounding line. We are able to reproduce this observed pattern in speed by predicting how friction at the base of the glacier will change with the addition of summer surface melt to the bed, and using those changes in friction to calculate seasonal speedup of the ice. The supraglacial drainage system of the Greenland Ice Sheet, in combination with surface melt rate, controls the rate of water flow into moulins, driving subglacial water pressure. We apply a physically-based surface meltwater flow model to a ~ 20×27 km² catchment on the southwestern Greenland Ice Sheet in high and low melt years to examine the impact of surface melt rate and variability on moulin inputs. The model outputs predict important differences in moulin inputs between high and low melt years. Subglacial hydrology is an important component of the ice dynamic system in Antarctica but is challenging to investigate due to the large spatial scales of the catchment systems, the ice thickness, and remote location. Here I discuss key discoveries about Antarctic subglacial hydrology from the Glacier Drainage System (GlaDS) model, including the presence of long, often high-pressure, subglacial channels. These channels pump tens of cubic metres per second of freshwater into ice-shelf cavities and directly affect melt rates at the critical grounding zone regions. Future ice dynamics and ice-shelf cavity models should take subglacial hydrology into account if they are to accurately predict future behaviour of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Liquid water can exist at temperatures well below freezing beneath glaciers and ice sheets, where subglacial water systems, fresh and saline, have been shown to host unique microbial ecosystems. Geophysical techniques sensitive to fluid-content contrasts, e.g. electromagnetics, can characterize subglacial water and its salinity. Here, we assess the ground-based transient electromagnetic (TEM) method for deriving the resistivity and salinity of subglacial water. We adapt an existing open-source Bayesian inversion algorithm, which uses independent depth constraints, to output posterior distributions of resistivity and pore fluid salinity with depth. A variety of synthetic models, including a thin (5 m), conductive (0.16 Ωm), hypersaline (147 psu) subglacial lake, are used to evaluate the TEM method for imaging under 800 m-thick ice. The study demonstrates that TEM methods can resolve conductive, saline bodies accurately using external depth constraints, for example, from radar or seismic data. The depth resolution of TEM can be limited beneath deep (>800 m), thick (>50 m) conductive, water bodies and additional constraints from passive electromagnetic (EM) methods could be used to reduce ambiguities in the TEM results. Subsequently, non-invasive active and passive EM methods could provide profound insights into remote aqueous systems under glaciers and ice sheets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
