Search

Observations at (sub-)millimeter wavelengths offer a complementary perspective on our Sun and other stars, offering significant insights into both the thermal and magnetic composition of their chromospheres. Despite the fundamental progress in (sub-)millimeter observations of the Sun, some important aspects require diagnostic capabilities that are not offered by existing observatories. In particular, simultaneously observations of the radiation continuum across an extended frequency range would facilitate the mapping of different layers and thus ultimately the 3D structure of the solar atmosphere. Mapping large regions on the Sun or even the whole solar disk at a very high temporal cadence would be crucial for systematically detecting and following the temporal evolution of flares, while synoptic observations, i.e., daily maps, over periods of years would provide an unprecedented view of the solar activity cycle in this wavelength regime. As our Sun is a fundamental reference for studying the atmospheres of active main sequence stars, observing the Sun and other stars with the same instrument would unlock the enormous diagnostic potential for understanding stellar activity and its impact on exoplanets. The Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST), a single-dish telescope with 50m aperture proposed to be built in the Atacama desert in Chile, would be able to provide these observational capabilities. Equipped with a large number of detector elements for probing the radiation continuum across a wide frequency range, AtLAST would address a wide range of scientific topics including the thermal structure and heating of the solar chromosphere, flares and prominences, and the solar activity cycle. In this white paper, the key science cases and their technical requirements for AtLAST are discussed.

High-latitude (∣ b ∣ > 30°) molecular clouds have virial parameters that exceed 1, but whether these clouds can form stars has not been studied systematically. Using JCMT SCUBA-2 archival data, we surveyed 70 fields that target high-latitude Planck Galactic cold clumps (HLPCs) to find dense cores with density of 10 ^5 –10 ^6 cm ^−3 and size of 1 × 10 ^21 cm ^−2 ). At an average rms of 15 mJy beam ^−1 , we detected Galactic dense cores in only one field, G6.04+36.77 (L183) while also identifying 12 extragalactic objects and two young stellar objects. Compared to the low-latitude clumps, dense cores are scarce in HLPCs. With synthetic observations, the densities of cores are constrained to be n _c ≲ 10 ^5 cm ^−3 should they exist in HLPCs. Low-latitude clumps, Taurus clumps, and HLPCs form a sequence where a higher virial parameter corresponds to a lower dense-core detection rate. If HLPCs were affected by the Local Bubble, the scarcity should favor turbulence-inhibited rather than supernova-driven star formation. Studies of the formation mechanism of the L183 molecular cloud are warranted.

The hot Neptune desert is one of the most sparsely populated regions of the exoplanet parameter space, and atmosphere observations of its few residents can provide insights into how such planets have managed to survive in such an inhospitable environment. Here, we present transmission observations of LTT 9779 b, the only known hot Neptune to have retained a significant H/He-dominated atmosphere, taken with JWST NIRISS/SOSS. The 0.6–2.85 μ m transmission spectrum shows evidence for muted spectral features, rejecting a perfectly flat line at >5 σ . We explore water- and methane-dominated atmosphere scenarios for LTT 9779 b’s terminator, and retrieval analyses reveal a continuum of potential combinations of metallicity and cloudiness. Through comparisons to previous population synthesis works and our own interior structure modeling, we are able to constrain LTT 9779 b’s atmosphere metallicity to 20–850× solar. Within this range of metallicity, our retrieval analyses prefer solutions with clouds at millibar pressures, regardless of whether the atmosphere is water or methane dominated—though cloud-free atmospheres with metallicities >500× solar cannot be entirely ruled out. By comparing self-consistent atmosphere temperature profiles with cloud condensation curves, we find that silicate clouds can readily condense in the terminator region of LTT 9779 b. Advection of these clouds onto the dayside could explain the high dayside albedo previously inferred for this planet and be part of a feedback loop aiding the survival of LTT 9779 b’s atmosphere in the hot Neptune desert.

We present a comprehensive analysis of young stellar object (YSO) variability within the M17 Southwest Extension (M17 SWex), using 3.5 yr of monitoring data from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) Transient Survey at submillimeter and 9 yr from the NEOWISE mission at mid-infrared (mid-IR). Our study encompasses observations of 147 bright submillimeter peaks identified within our deep JCMT coadded map as well as 156 YSOs in NEOWISE W1 and 179 in W2 that were previously identified in Spitzer surveys. We find three robust submillimeter variables: two are candidate YSOs and one is a likely extragalactic source. At mid-IR wavelengths, our analysis reveals secular and stochastic variability in 47 YSOs, with the highest fraction of secular variability occurring at the earliest evolutionary stage. This is similar to what has previously been observed for low-mass YSO variability within the Gould Belt. However, we observe less overall variability in M17 SWex at both the submillimeter and mid-IR. We suspect that this lower fraction is due to the greater distance to M17 SWex. Our findings showcase the utility of multiwavelength observations to better capture the complex variability phenomena inherent to star formation processes and demonstrate the importance of years-long monitoring of a diverse selection of star-forming environments.

The James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) Transient Survey has been monitoring eight Gould Belt low-mass star-forming regions since 2015 December and six somewhat more distant intermediate-mass star-forming regions since 2020 February with the Submillimeter Common User Bolometer Array 2 on board JCMT at 450 and 850 μ m and with an approximately monthly cadence. We introduce our pipeline v2 relative calibration procedures for image alignment and flux calibration across epochs, improving on our previous pipeline v1 by decreasing measurement uncertainties and providing additional robustness. These new techniques work at both 850 and 450 μ m, where version 1 only allowed investigation of the 850 μ m data. Pipeline v2 achieves better than 0.″5 relative image alignment, less than a tenth of the submillimeter beam widths. The version 2 relative flux calibration is found to be 1% at 850 μ m and

An unbiased spectral survey of V883 Ori, an eruptive young star, was carried out with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Band 6. The detected line emission from various molecules reveals morphological/kinematical features in both the Keplerian disk and the infalling envelope. A direct infall signature, redshifted absorption against the continuum, has been detected in CO, HCO ^+ , HCN, HNC, and H _2 CO. HCO ^+ and SO show large armlike structures that probably connect the infalling envelope to the disk. HCN and H _2 CO reveal a distinct boundary between the inner and outer disks and tentative spiral structures connecting the outer disk to the inner disk. HNC shows a large central emission hole ( r ∼ 0.″3) due to its chemical conversion to HCN at high temperatures. HDO emission, a direct tracer of the water sublimation region, has been detected in the disk. Molecular emission from complex organic molecules is confined within the HDO emission boundary, and HCO ^+ has an emission hole in its distribution due to its destruction by water. Together, these features suggest that the current episode of eruption in V883 Ori may be triggered by the infall from the envelope to the outer disk, generating a spiral wave that propagates inward and greatly enhances the accretion onto the central star.

High angular resolution imaging by Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has revealed the near universality and diversity of substructures in protoplanetary disks. However, disks around M-type pre-main-sequence stars are still poorly sampled, despite the prevalence of M dwarfs in the Galaxy. Here we present high-resolution (∼50 mas, 8 au) ALMA Band 6 observations of six disks around mid-M stars in Taurus. We detect dust continuum emission in all six disks, ^12 CO in five disks, and ^13 CO line in two disks. The size ratios between gas and dust disks range from 1.6 to 5.1. The ratio of about 5 for 2M0436 and 2M0450 indicates efficient dust radial drift. Four disks show rings and cavities, and two disks are smooth. The cavity sizes occupy a wide range: 60 au for 2M0412, and ∼10 au for 2M0434, 2M0436, and 2M0508. Detailed visibility modeling indicates that small cavities of 1.7 and 5.7 au may hide in the two smooth disks 2M0450 and CIDA 12. We perform radiative transfer fitting of the infrared spectral energy distributions to constrain the cavity sizes, finding that micron-sized dust grains may have smaller cavities than millimeter grains. Planet–disk interactions are the preferred explanation to produce the large 60 au cavity, while other physics could be responsible for the three ∼10 au cavities under current observations and theories. Currently, disks around mid- to late M stars in Taurus show a higher detection frequency of cavities than earlier-type stars, although a more complete sample is needed to evaluate any dependence of substructure on stellar mass.

The launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) marks a pivotal moment for precise atmospheric characterization of Y dwarfs, the coldest brown dwarf spectral type. In this study, we leverage moderate spectral resolution observations ( R ∼ 2700) with the G395H grating of the Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board JWST to characterize the nearby (9.9 pc) Y dwarf WISEPA J182831.08+265037.8. With the NIRSpec G395H 2.88–5.12 μ m spectrum, we measure the abundances of CO, CO _2 , CH _4 , H _2 S, NH _3 , and H _2 O, which are the major carbon-, nitrogen-, oxygen-, and sulfur-bearing species in the atmosphere. Based on the retrieved volume mixing ratios with the atmospheric retrieval framework CHIMERA, we report that the C/O ratio is 0.45 ± 0.01, close to the solar C/O value of 0.458, and the metallicity is +0.30 ± 0.02 dex. Comparison between the retrieval results and the forward modeling results suggests that the model bias for C/O and metallicity could be as high as 0.03 and 0.97 dex, respectively. We also report a lower limit of the ^12 CO/ ^13 CO ratio of >40, being consistent with the nominal solar value of 90. Our results highlight the potential for JWST to measure the C/O ratios down to percent-level precision and characterize isotopologues of cold planetary atmospheres similar to WISE 1828.

The young stellar source HH 30 is a textbook example of an ionic optical jet originating from a disk in an edge-on system shown by the Hubble Space Telescope. It has a remnant envelope in ^12 CO observed by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The optical jet is characterized by its narrow appearance, large line width at the base, and high temperature inferred from line diagnostics. Three featured structures can be identified, most evident in the transverse position–velocity diagrams: an extremely-high-velocity wide-angle wind component with large spectral widths in the optical, a very-low-velocity ambient surrounding medium seen in ^12 CO, and a low-velocity region traced by ^12 CO nested both in velocity and location between the primary wind and ambient environment. A layered cavity with multiple shells forms nested morphological and kinematic structures around the optical jet. The atomic gas originating from the innermost region of the disk attains a sufficient temperature and ionization to emit brightly in forbidden lines as an optical jet. The wide-angle portion expands, forming a low-density cavity. The filamentary ^12 CO encompassing the wind cavity is mixed and advected inward through the action of the magnetic interplay of the wide-angle wind with the molecular ambient medium. The magnetic interplay results in the layered shells penetrating deeply into the vast cavity of tenuous atomic wind material. The HH 30 system is an ideal manifestation of the unified wind model of Shang et al. (2020, 2023), with clearly distinguishable atomic and molecular species mixed through the atomic lightly ionized magnetized wind and the surrounding cold molecular ambient material.

We present JWST/NIRCam F187N, F200W, F405N, and F410M direct imaging data of the disk surrounding SAO 206462. Previous images show a very structured disk, with a pair of spiral arms thought to be launched by one or more external perturbers. The spiral features are visible in three of the four filters, with the nondetection in F410M due to the large detector saturation radius. We detect with a signal-to-noise ratio of 4.4 a companion candidate that, if on a coplanar circular orbit, would orbit SAO 206462 at a separation of ∼300 au, 2.25 σ away from the predicted separation for the driver of the eastern spiral. No other companion candidates were detected. At the location predicted by simulations of both spirals generated by a single massive companion, the NIRCam data exclude objects more massive than ∼2.2 M _J assuming the BEX evolutionary models. In terms of temperatures, the data are sensitive to objects with T _eff ∼ 650–850 K, when assuming planets emit like blackbodies ( R _p between 1 and 3 R _J ). From these results, we conclude that if the spirals are driven by gas giants, these must be either cold or embedded in circumplanetary material. In addition, the NIRCam data provide tight constraints on ongoing accretion processes. In the low extinction scenario we are sensitive to mass accretion rates of the order $\dot{M}\sim {10}^{-9}{M}_{{\rm{J}}}$ yr ^−1 . Thanks to the longer wavelengths used to search for emission lines, we reach unprecedented sensitivities to processes with $\dot{M}\sim {10}^{-7}{M}_{{\rm{J}}}$ yr ^−1 even toward highly extincted environments ( A _V ≈ 50 mag).

MWC 758 is a young star hosting a spiral protoplanetary disk. The spirals are likely companion-driven, and two previously identified candidate companions have been identified—one at the end the Southern spiral arm at ∼0.″6, and one interior to the gap at ∼0.″1. With JWST/NIRCam, we provide new images of the disk and constraints on planets exterior to ∼1″. We detect the two-armed spiral disk, a known background star, and a spatially resolved background galaxy, but no clear companions. The candidates that have been reported are at separations that are not probed by our data with sensitivity sufficient to detect them−nevertheless, these observations place new limits on companions down to ∼2 M _Jup at ∼150 au and ∼0.5 M _Jup at ≳600 au. Owing to the unprecedented sensitivity of JWST and youth of the target, these are among the deepest mass-detection limits yet obtained through direct imaging observations, and provide new insights into the system’s dynamical nature.

As part of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Guaranteed Time Observation program “Direct Imaging of YSOs” (program ID 1179), we use JWST NIRCam’s direct imaging mode in F187N, F200W, F405N, and F410M to perform high-contrast observations of the circumstellar structures surrounding the protostar HL Tau. The data reveal the known stellar envelope, outflow cavity, and streamers, but do not detect any companion candidates. We detect scattered light from an inflowing spiral streamer previously detected in HCO ^+ by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, and part of the structure connected to the c-shaped outflow cavity. For detection limits in planet mass we use BEX evolutionary tracks when M _p < 2 M _J and AMES-COND evolutionary tracks otherwise, assuming a planet age of 1 Myr (youngest available age). Inside the disk region, due to extended envelope emission, our point-source sensitivities are ∼5 mJy (37 M _J ) at 40 au in F187N and ∼0.37 mJy (5.2 M _J ) at 140 au in F405N. Outside the disk region, the deepest limits we can reach are ∼0.01 mJy (0.75 M _J ) at a projected separation ∼ 525 au.

We present ∼0.″2 (∼80 au) resolution observations of the CO(2–1) and SiO(5–4) lines made with the Atacama large millimeter/submillimeter array toward an extremely young intermediate-mass protostellar source ( t _dyn < 1000 yr), MMS 1 located in the Orion Molecular Cloud-3 region. We have successfully imaged a very compact CO molecular outflow associated with MMS 1, having deprojected lobe sizes of ∼1800 au (redshifted lobe) and ∼2800 au (blueshifted lobe). We have also detected an extremely compact (≲1000 au) and collimated SiO protostellar jet within the CO outflow. The maximum deprojected jet speed is measured to be as high as 93 km s ^−1 . The SiO jet wiggles and displays a chain of knots. Our detection of the molecular outflow and jet is the first direct evidence that MMS 1 already hosts a protostar. The position–velocity diagram obtained from the SiO emission shows two distinct structures: (i) bow shocks associated with the tips of the outflow, and (ii) a collimated jet, showing the jet velocities linearly increasing with the distance from the driving source. Comparisons between the observations and numerical simulations quantitatively share similarities such as multiple-mass ejection events within the jet and Hubble-like flow associated with each mass ejection event. Finally, while there is a weak flux decline seen in the 850 μ m light curve obtained with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope/SCUBA 2 toward MMS 1, no dramatic flux change events are detected. This suggests that there has not been a clear burst event within the last 8 yr.

We present the outflows detected in HOPS 373SW, a protostar undergoing a modest 30% brightness increase at 850 μ m. Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of shock tracers, including SiO 8–7, CH _3 OH 7 _k –6 _k , and ^12 CO 3–2 emission, reveal several outflow features around HOPS 373SW. The knots in the extremely high-velocity SiO emission reveal the wiggle of the jet, for which a simple model derives a 37° inclination angle of the jet to the plane of the sky, a jet velocity of 90 km s ^−1 , and a period of 50 yr. The slow SiO and CH _3 OH emission traces U-shaped bow shocks surrounding the two CO outflows. One outflow is associated with the high-velocity jets, while the other is observed to be close to the plane of the sky. The misaligned outflows imply that previous episodic accretion events have either reoriented HOPS 373SW or that it is an unresolved protostellar binary system with misaligned outflows.

We report 850 μ m continuum polarization observations toward the filamentary high-mass star-forming region NGC 2264, taken as part of the B -fields In STar forming Regions Observations large program on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. These data reveal a well-structured nonuniform magnetic field in the NGC 2264C and 2264D regions with a prevailing orientation around 30° from north to east. Field strength estimates and a virial analysis of the major clumps indicate that NGC 2264C is globally dominated by gravity, while in 2264D, magnetic, gravitational, and kinetic energies are roughly balanced. We present an analysis scheme that utilizes the locally resolved magnetic field structures, together with the locally measured gravitational vector field and the extracted filamentary network. From this, we infer statistical trends showing that this network consists of two main groups of filaments oriented approximately perpendicular to one another. Additionally, gravity shows one dominating converging direction that is roughly perpendicular to one of the filament orientations, which is suggestive of mass accretion along this direction. Beyond these statistical trends, we identify two types of filaments. The type I filament is perpendicular to the magnetic field with local gravity transitioning from parallel to perpendicular to the magnetic field from the outside to the filament ridge. The type II filament is parallel to the magnetic field and local gravity. We interpret these two types of filaments as originating from the competition between radial collapsing, driven by filament self-gravity, and longitudinal collapsing, driven by the region's global gravity.

The isolated globule B335 contains a single, low-luminosity Class 0 protostar associated with a bipolar nebula and outflow system seen nearly perpendicular to its axis. We observed the innermost regions of this outflow as part of JWST/NIRCam Guaranteed Time Observations program 1187, primarily intended for wide-field slitless spectroscopy of background stars behind the globule. We find a system of expanding shock fronts with kinematic ages of only a few decades emerging symmetrically from the position of the embedded protostar, which is not directly detected at NIRCam wavelengths. The innermost and youngest of the shock fronts studied here shows strong emission from CO. The next older shock front shows less CO and the third shock front shows only H _2 emission in our data. This third and most distant of these inner shock fronts shows substantial evolution of its shape since it was last observed with high spatial resolution in 1996 with Keck/NIRC. This may be evidence of a faster internal shock catching up with a slower one and of the two shocks merging.

Variability in the brightness of young stellar objects (YSOs) is a common phenomenon that can be caused by changes in various factors, including accretion, extinction, disk morphology, interactions between the disk and the stellar photosphere, and the rotation of hot or cold magnetic spots on the stellar photosphere. Analyzing the variability on different timescales provides insight into the mechanisms driving the changes in the brightness of YSOs. We investigate the variability of YSOs on both long and short timescales using two mid-IR data sets: the Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) 7.5 yr W2 (4.6 μ m) data and the YSOVAR 40 day Spitzer/IRAC2 (4.5 μ m) data, respectively. We classify the variability types in each timescale following Park et al. We find a higher detection rate of variable sources in the short term (77.6%) compared to the long term (43.0%) due to the higher sensitivity of the Spitzer observations. In addition, the higher cadence of the YSOVAR data results in the weeks-long short-term variability being mostly secular, while the years-long long-term variability explored with the coarsely sampled NEOWISE data is mostly stochastic. By crossmatching the two catalogs, we statistically analyze the variability types exhibited by YSOs across both timescales. The long-term variability amplitude is mostly three times (up to 10 times) greater than the short-term variability. Furthermore, we evaluate variability on very short (1–2 days) timescales and recover a trend of the increasing amplitude of variability as the timescales increase. By comprehensively analyzing the variability of YSOs over various timescales, we contribute to a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms driving their variability.

Evidence abounds that young stellar objects undergo luminous bursts of intense accretion that are short compared to the time it takes to form a star. It remains unclear how much these events contribute to the main-sequence masses of the stars. We demonstrate the power of time-series far-infrared (far-IR) photometry to answer this question compared to similar observations at shorter and longer wavelengths. We start with model spectral energy distributions that have been fit to 86 Class 0 protostars in the Orion molecular clouds. The protostars sample a broad range of envelope densities, cavity geometries, and viewing angles. We then increase the luminosity of each model by factors of 10, 50, and 100 and assess how these luminosity increases manifest in the form of flux increases over wavelength ranges of interest. We find that the fractional change in the far-IR luminosity during a burst more closely traces the change in the accretion rate than photometric diagnostics at mid-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths. We also show that observations at far-IR and longer wavelengths reliably track accretion changes without confusion from large, variable circumstellar and interstellar extinction that plague studies at shorter wavelengths. We close by discussing the ability of a proposed far-IR surveyor for the 2030s to enable improvements in our understanding of the role of accretion bursts in mass assembly.

Protostellar outflows and jets are almost ubiquitous characteristics during the mass accretion phase and encode the history of stellar accretion, complex organic molecule (COM) formation, and planet formation. Episodic jets are likely connected to episodic accretion through the disk. Despite the importance, studies on episodic accretion and ejection links have not been done yet in a systematic fashion using high-sensitivity and high-resolution observations. To explore episodic accretion mechanisms and the chronologies of episodic events, we investigated 39 fields containing protostars with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of CO, SiO, and 1.3 mm continuum emission. We detected SiO emission in 19 fields, where 17 sources are driving molecular jets. Jet velocities, mass-loss rates, mass accretion rates, and periods of accretion events appear to have some dependence on the driving forces of the jet (e.g., bolometric luminosity, envelope mass). Next, velocities and mass-loss rates appear to be somewhat correlated with the surrounding envelope mass, suggesting that the presence of high mass around protostars increases the ejection–accretion activity. We determine mean periods of ejection events of 20–175 yr for our sample, which could be associated with perturbation zones of ∼2−25 au extent around the protostars. In addition, mean ejection periods show an apparent anticorrelation with the envelope mass, where high accretion rates may trigger more frequent ejection events. The observed periods of outburst/ejection are much shorter than the freezeout timescale of the simplest COMs like CH _3 OH, suggesting that episodic events could affect the ice–gas balance inside and around the snowline.

Protostellar outflows often present a knotty appearance, providing evidence of sporadic accretion in stellar mass growth. To understand the direct relation between mass accretion and ejection, we analyze the contemporaneous accretion activity and associated ejection components in B335. B335 has brightened in the mid-IR by 2.5 mag since 2010, indicating increased luminosity, presumably due to an increased mass accretion rate onto the protostar. Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of ^12 CO emission in the outflow reveal high-velocity emission, estimated to have been ejected 4.6–2 yr before the ALMA observations and consistent with the jump in mid-IR brightness. The consistency in timing suggests that the detected high-velocity ejection components are directly linked to the most recent accretion activity. We calculated the kinetic energy, momentum, and force for the ejection component associated with the most recent accretion activity and found that, at least, about 1.0% of the accreted mass has been ejected. More accurate information on the jet inclination and the temperature of the ejected gas components will better constrain the ejected mass induced by the recently enhanced accretion event.

The internal structure of the prestellar core G208.68-19.02-N2 (G208-N2) in the Orion Molecular Cloud 3 (OMC-3) region has been studied with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The dust continuum emission revealed a filamentary structure with a length of ∼5000 au and an average H _2 volume density of ∼6 × 10 ^7 cm ^−3 . At the tip of this filamentary structure, there is a compact object, which we call a nucleus , with a radius of ∼150–200 au and a mass of ∼0.1 M _⊙ . The nucleus has a central density of ∼2 × 10 ^9 cm ^−3 with a radial density profile of r ^−1.87±0.11 . The density scaling of the nucleus is ∼3.7 times higher than that of the singular isothermal sphere (SIS). This as well as the very low virial parameter of 0.39 suggests that the gravity is dominant over the pressure everywhere in the nucleus. However, there is no sign of CO outflow localized to this nucleus. The filamentary structure is traced by the N _2 D ^+ 3–2 emission, but not by the C ^18 O 2–1 emission, implying the significant CO depletion due to high density and cold temperature. Toward the nucleus, the N _2 D ^+ also shows the signature of depletion. This could imply either the depletion of the parent molecule, N _2 , or the presence of the embedded very-low luminosity central source that could sublimate the CO in the very small area. The nucleus in G208-N2 is considered to be a prestellar core on the verge of first hydrostatic core (FHSC) formation or a candidate for the FHSC.

While the most exciting explanation of the observed dust asymmetries in protoplanetary disks is the presence of protoplanets, other mechanisms can also form the dust features. This paper presents dual-wavelength Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of a large asymmetric dusty ring around the M-type star CIDA 9A. We detect a dust asymmetry in both 1.3 and 3.1 mm data. To characterize the asymmetric structure, a parametric model is used to fit the observed visibilities. We report a tentative azimuthal shift of the dust emission peaks between the observations at the two wavelengths. This shift is consistent with a dust trap caused by a vortex, which may be formed by an embedded protoplanet or other hydrodynamical instabilities, such as a dead zone. Deep high-spatial-resolution observations of dust and molecular gas are needed to constrain the mechanisms that formed the observed millimeter cavity and dust asymmetry in the protoplanetary disk around CIDA 9A.

One of the most poorly understood aspects of low-mass star formation is how multiple-star systems are formed. Here we present the results of Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 6 observations toward a forming quadruple protostellar system, G206.93-16.61E2, in the Orion B molecular cloud. ALMA 1.3 mm continuum emission reveals four compact objects, of which two are Class I young stellar objects and the other two are likely in prestellar phase. The 1.3 mm continuum emission also shows three asymmetric ribbon-like structures that are connected to the four objects, with lengths ranging from ∼500 to ∼2200 au. By comparing our data with magnetohydrodynamic simulations, we suggest that these ribbons trace accretion flows and also function as gas bridges connecting the member protostars. Additionally, ALMA CO J = 2−1 line emission reveals a complicated molecular outflow associated with G206.93-16.61E2, with arc-like structures suggestive of an outflow cavity viewed pole-on.

We report observations with the JWST/NIRCam coronagraph of the Fomalhaut ( α PsA) system. This nearby A star hosts a complex debris disk system discovered by the IRAS satellite. Observations in F444W and F356W filters using the round 430R mask achieve a contrast ratio of ∼4 × 10 ^−7 at 1″ and ∼4 × 10 ^−8 outside of 3″. These observations reach a sensitivity limit of 0.7 mag (Vega) color. Whether this object is a background galaxy, brown dwarf, or a Jovian-mass planet in the Fomalhaut system will be determined by an approved Cycle 2 follow-up program. Finally, we set upper limits to any scattered light from the outer ring, placing a weak limit on the dust albedo at F356W and F444W.

We present the first analysis of JWST near-infrared spectroscopy of stellar flares from TRAPPIST-1 during transits of rocky exoplanets. Four flares were observed from 0.6–2.8 μ m with the Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph and 0.6–3.5 μ m with the Near Infrared Spectrograph during transits of TRAPPIST-1b, f, and g. We discover P α and Br β line emission and characterize flare continuum at wavelengths from 1–3.5 μ m for the first time. Observed lines include H α , P α –P ϵ , Br β , He i λ 0.7062 μ m, two Ca ii infrared triplet (IRT) lines, and the He i IRT. We observe a reversed Paschen decrement from P α –P γ alongside changes in the light-curve shapes of these lines. The continuum of all four flares is well described by blackbody emission with an effective temperature below 5300 K, lower than the temperatures typically observed at optical wavelengths. The 0.6–1 μ m spectra were convolved with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) response, enabling us to measure the flare rate of TRAPPIST-1 in the TESS bandpass. We find flares of 10 ^30 erg, large enough to impact transit spectra occur at a rate of ${3.6}_{-1.3}^{+2.1}$ flare day ^−1 , ∼10× higher than previous predictions from K2. We measure the amount of flare contamination at 2 μ m for the TRAPPIST-1b and f transits to be 500 ± 450 and 2100 ± 400 ppm, respectively. We find up to 80% of flare contamination can be removed, with mitigation most effective from 1.0–2.4 μ m. These results suggest transits affected by flares may still be useful for atmospheric characterization efforts.

EX Lup is the archetype for the class of young stars that undergoes repeated accretion outbursts of ∼5 mag at optical wavelengths that last for months. Despite extensive monitoring that dates back 130 yr, the accretion history of EX Lup remains mostly qualitative and has large uncertainties. We assess historical accretion rates of EX Lup by applying correlations between optical brightness and accretion, developed on multi-band magnitude photometry of the ∼2 mag optical burst in 2022. Two distinct classes of bursts occur: major outbursts (Δ V ∼ 5 mag) have year-long durations, are rare, reach accretion rates of ${\dot{M}}_{\mathrm{acc}}\sim {10}^{-7}$ M _⊙ yr ^−1 at peak, and have a total accreted mass of around 0.1 Earth mass. The characteristic bursts (Δ V ∼ 2 mag) have durations of ∼2–3 months, are more common, reach accretion rates of ${\dot{M}}_{\mathrm{acc}}\sim {10}^{-8}$ M _⊙ yr ^−1 at peak, and have a total accreted mass of around 10 ^−3 Earth masses. The distribution of total accreted mass in the full set of bursts is poorly described by a power law, which suggests different driving causes behind the major outburst and characteristic bursts. The total mass accreted during two classes of bursts is around 2 times the masses accreted during quiescence. Our analysis of the light curves reveals a color-dependent time lag in the 2022 post-burst light curve, attributed to the presence of both hot and cool spots on the stellar surface.

Hot corinos are of great interest due to their richness in interstellar complex organic molecules (COMs) and the consequent potential prebiotic connection to solar-like planetary systems. Recent surveys have reported an increasing number of detected hot corinos in Class 0/I protostars; however, the relationships between their physical properties and the hot-corino signatures remain elusive. In this study, our objective is to establish a general picture of the detectability of hot corinos by identifying the origins of the hot-corino signatures in the sample of young stellar objects (YSOs) obtained from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Survey of Orion Planck Galactic Cold Clumps project. We apply spectral energy distribution modeling to our sample and identify the physical parameters of the modeled YSOs directly, linking the detection of hot-corino signatures to the envelope properties of the YSOs. Imaging simulations of the methanol emission further support this scenario. We therefore posit that the observed COM emission originates from the warm inner envelopes of the sample YSOs, based on both the warm region size and the envelope density profile. The former is governed by the source luminosity and is additionally affected by the disk and cavity properties, while the latter is related to the evolutionary stages. This scenario provides a framework for detecting hot-corino signatures toward luminous Class 0 YSOs, with fewer detections being observed toward similarly luminous Class I sources.

We present the spectra of complex organic molecules (COMs) detected in HOPS 373SW with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). HOPS 373SW, which is a component of a protostellar binary with a separation of 1500au, has been discovered as a variable protostar by the JCMT transient monitoring survey with a modest (∼30%) brightness increase at submillimeter wavelengths. Our ALMA target-of-opportunity observation at ∼345 GHz for HOPS 373SW revealed extremely young chemical characteristics with strong deuteration of methanol. The dust continuum opacity is very high toward the source center, obscuring line emission from within 0.″03. The other binary component, HOPS 373NE, was detected only in C ^17 O in our observation, implying a cold and quiescent environment. We compare the COM abundances relative to CH _3 OH in HOPS 373SW with those of V883 Ori, which is an eruptive disk object, as well as other hot corinos, to demonstrate the chemical evolution from envelope to disk. High abundances of singly, doubly, and triply deuterated methanol (CH _2 DOH, CHD _2 OH, and CD _3 OH) and a low CH _3 CN abundance in HOPS 373SW compared to other hot corinos suggest a very early evolutionary stage of HOPS 373SW in the hot corino phase. Since the COMs detected in HOPS 373SW would have been sublimated very recently from grain surfaces, HOPS 373SW is a promising place to study the surface chemistry of COMs in the cold prestellar phase before sublimation.

As next-generation imaging instruments and interferometers search for planets closer to their stars, they must contend with increasing orbital motion and longer integration times. These compounding effects make it difficult to detect faint planets but also present an opportunity. Increased orbital motion makes it possible to move the search for planets into the orbital domain, where direct images can be freely combined with the radial velocity and proper motion anomaly, even without a confirmed detection in any single epoch. In this paper, we present a fast and differentiable multimethod orbit-modeling and planet detection code called Octofitter. This code is designed to be highly modular and allows users to easily adjust priors, change parameterizations, and specify arbitrary function relations between the parameters of one or more planets. Octofitter further supplies tools for examining model outputs including prior and posterior predictive checks and simulation-based calibration. We demonstrate the capabilities of Octofitter on real and simulated data from different instruments and methods, including HD 91312, simulated JWST/NIRISS aperture masking interferometry observations, radial velocity curves, and grids of images from the Gemini Planet Imager. We show that Octofitter can reliably recover faint planets in long sequences of images with arbitrary orbital motion. This publicly available tool will enable the broad application of multiepoch and multimethod exoplanet detection, which could improve how future targeted ground- and space-based surveys are performed. Finally, its rapid convergence makes it a useful addition to the existing ecosystem of tools for modeling the orbits of directly imaged planets.

We present observations of polarized dust emission at 850 μ m from the L43 molecular cloud, which sits in the Ophiuchus cloud complex. The data were taken using SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as a part of the BISTRO large program. L43 is a dense ( ${N}_{{{\rm{H}}}_{2}}\sim {10}^{22}$ –10 ^23 cm ^−2 ) complex molecular cloud with a submillimeter-bright starless core and two protostellar sources. There appears to be an evolutionary gradient along the isolated filament that L43 is embedded within, with the most evolved source closest to the Sco OB2 association. One of the protostars drives a CO outflow that has created a cavity to the southeast. We see a magnetic field that appears to be aligned with the cavity walls of the outflow, suggesting interaction with the outflow. We also find a magnetic field strength of up to ∼160 ± 30 μ G in the main starless core and up to ∼90 ± 40 μ G in the more diffuse, extended region. These field strengths give magnetically super- and subcritical values, respectively, and both are found to be roughly trans-Alfvénic. We also present a new method of data reduction for these denser but fainter objects like starless cores.

Planet formation imprints signatures on the physical structures of disks. In this paper, we present high-resolution (∼50 mas, 8 au) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of 1.3 mm dust continuum and CO line emission toward the disk around the M3.5 star 2MASS J04124068+2438157. The dust disk consists of only two narrow rings at radial distances of 0.″47 and 0.″78 (∼70 and 116 au), with Gaussian σ widths of 5.6 and 8.5 au, respectively. The width of the outer ring is smaller than the estimated pressure scale height by ∼25%, suggesting dust trapping in a radial pressure bump. The dust disk size, set by the location of the outermost ring, is significantly larger (by 3 σ ) than other disks with similar millimeter luminosity, which can be explained by an early formation of local pressure bump to stop radial drift of millimeter dust grains. After considering the disk’s physical structure and accretion properties, we prefer planet–disk interaction over dead zone or photoevaporation models to explain the observed dust disk morphology. We carry out high-contrast imaging at the $L^{\prime} $ band using Keck/NIRC2 to search for potential young planets, but do not identify any source above 5 σ . Within the dust gap between the two rings, we reach a contrast level of ∼7 mag, constraining the possible planet below ∼2–4 M _Jup . Analyses of the gap/ring properties suggest that an approximately Saturn-mass planet at ∼90 au is likely responsible for the formation of the outer ring, which can potentially be revealed with JWST.

We have observed the low-mass protostellar source IRAS 15398−3359 at a resolution of 0.″2–0.″3, as part of the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array Large Program FAUST, to examine the presence of a hot corino in the vicinity of the protostar. We detect nine CH _3 OH lines including the high-excitation lines with upper-state energies up to 500 K. The CH _3 OH rotational temperature and the column density are derived to be ${119}_{-26}^{+20}$ K and ${3.2}_{-1.0}^{+2.5}\times {10}^{18}$ cm ^−2 , respectively. The beam filling factor is derived to be ${0.018}_{-0.003}^{+0.005}$ , indicating that the emitting region of CH _3 OH is much smaller than the synthesized beam size and is not resolved. The emitting region of three high-excitation lines, 18 _3,15 –18 _2,16 , A ( E _u = 447 K), 19 _3,16 –19 _2,17 , A ( E _u = 491 K), and 20 _3,17 –20 _2,18 , A ( E _u = 537 K), is located within the 50 au area around the protostar and seems to have a slight extension toward the northwest. Toward the continuum peak, we also detect one emission line from CH _2 DOH and two features of multiple CH _3 OCHO lines. These results, in combination with previous reports, indicate that IRAS 15398−3359 is a source with hybrid properties showing both hot corino chemistry rich in complex organic molecules on small scales (∼10 au) and warm carbon-chain chemistry rich in carbon-chain species on large scales (∼100–1000 au). A possible implication of the small emitting region is further discussed in relation to the origin of the hot corino activity.

The Y-dwarf WISE 1828+2650 is one of the coldest known brown dwarfs with an effective temperature of ∼300 K. Located at a distance of just 10 pc, previous model-based estimates suggest WISE1828+2650 has a mass of ∼5–10 M _J , making it a valuable laboratory for understanding the formation, evolution, and physical characteristics of gas giant planets. However, previous photometry and spectroscopy have presented a puzzle, with the near impossibility of simultaneously fitting both the short- (0.9–2.0 μ m) and long-wavelength (3–5 μ m) data. A potential solution to this problem has been the suggestion that WISE 1828+2650 is a binary system whose composite spectrum might provide a better match to the data. Alternatively, new models being developed to fit JWST/NIRSpec, and MIRI spectroscopy might provide new insights. This article describes JWST/NIRCam observations of WISE 1828+2650 in six filters to address the binarity question and to provide new photometry to be used in model fitting. We also report adaptive optics imaging with the Keck I0 m telescope. We find no evidence for multiplicity for a companion beyond 0.5 au with either JWST or Keck. Companion articles will present low- and high-resolution spectra of WISE 1828 obtained with both NIRSpec and MIRI.

We study the H ii regions associated with the NGC 6334 molecular cloud observed in the submillimeter and taken as part of the B -fields In STar-forming Region Observations Survey. In particular, we investigate the polarization patterns and magnetic field morphologies associated with these H ii regions. Through polarization pattern and pressure calculation analyses, several of these bubbles indicate that the gas and magnetic field lines have been pushed away from the bubble, toward an almost tangential (to the bubble) magnetic field morphology. In the densest part of NGC 6334, where the magnetic field morphology is similar to an hourglass, the polarization observations do not exhibit observable impact from H ii regions. We detect two nested radial polarization patterns in a bubble to the south of NGC 6334 that correspond to the previously observed bipolar structure in this bubble. Finally, using the results of this study, we present steps (incorporating computer vision; circular Hough transform) that can be used in future studies to identify bubbles that have physically impacted magnetic field lines.

We observed HD 19467 B with JWST’s NIRCam in six filters spanning 2.5–4.6 μ m with the long-wavelength bar coronagraph. The brown dwarf HD 19467 B was initially identified through a long-period trend in the radial velocity of the G3V star HD 19467. HD 19467 B was subsequently detected via coronagraphic imaging and spectroscopy, and characterized as a late-T type brown dwarf with an approximate temperature ∼1000 K. We observed HD 19467 B as a part of the NIRCam GTO science program, demonstrating the first use of the NIRCam Long Wavelength Bar coronagraphic mask. The object was detected in all six filters (contrast levels of 2 × 10 ^−4 to 2 × 10 ^−5 ) at a separation of 1.″6 using angular differential imaging and synthetic reference differential imaging. Due to a guide star failure during the acquisition of a preselected reference star, no reference star data were available for post-processing. However, reference differential imaging was successfully applied using synthetic point-spread functions developed from contemporaneous maps of the telescope’s optical configuration. Additional radial velocity data (from Keck/HIRES) are used to constrain the orbit of HD 19467 B. Photometric data from TESS are used to constrain the properties of the host star, particularly its age. NIRCam photometry, spectra, and photometry from the literature, and improved stellar parameters are used in conjunction with recent spectral and evolutionary substellar models to derive the physical properties of HD 19467 B. Using an age of 9.4 ± 0.9 Gyr inferred from spectroscopy, Gaia astrometry, and TESS asteroseismology, we obtain a model-derived mass of 62 ± 1 M _J , which is consistent within 2 σ with the dynamically derived mass of ${81}_{-12}^{+14}$ M _J .

Starless cores represent the initial stage of evolution toward (proto)star formation, and a subset of them, known as prestellar cores, with high density (∼ 10 ^6 cm ^−3 or higher) and being centrally concentrated are expected to be embryos of (proto)stars. Determining the density profile of prestellar cores therefore provides an important opportunity to gauge the initial conditions of star formation. In this work, we perform rigorous modeling to estimate the density profiles of three nearly spherical prestellar cores among a sample of five highly dense cores detected by our recent observations. We employed multiscale observational data of the (sub)millimeter dust continuum emission, including those obtained by SCUBA-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope with a resolution of ∼ 5600 au and by multiple Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations with a resolution as high as ∼ 480 au. We are able to consistently reproduce the observed multiscale dust continuum images of the cores with a simple prescribed density profile, which bears an inner region of flat density and an r ^−2 profile toward the outer region. By utilizing the peak density and the size of the inner flat region as a proxy for the dynamical stage of the cores, we find that the three modeled cores are most likely unstable and prone to collapse. The sizes of the inner flat regions, as compact as ∼ 500 au, signify them as being the highly evolved prestellar cores rarely found to date.

We present BISTRO Survey 850 μ m dust emission polarization observations of the L1495A-B10 region of the Taurus molecular cloud, taken at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). We observe a roughly triangular network of dense filaments. We detect nine of the dense starless cores embedded within these filaments in polarization, finding that the plane-of-sky orientation of the core-scale magnetic field lies roughly perpendicular to the filaments in almost all cases. We also find that the large-scale magnetic field orientation measured by Planck is not correlated with any of the core or filament structures, except in the case of the lowest-density core. We propose a scenario for early prestellar evolution that is both an extension to, and consistent with, previous models, introducing an additional evolutionary transitional stage between field-dominated and matter-dominated evolution, observed here for the first time. In this scenario, the cloud collapses first to a sheet-like structure. Uniquely, we appear to be seeing this sheet almost face on. The sheet fragments into filaments, which in turn form cores. However, the material must reach a certain critical density before the evolution changes from being field dominated to being matter dominated. We measure the sheet surface density and the magnetic field strength at that transition for the first time and show consistency with an analytical prediction that had previously gone untested for over 50 yr.
