Abstract

There is a crucial need for effective and easily dispersible colloidal microsensors able to detect local pH changes before irreversible damages caused by demineralization, corrosion, or biofilms occur. One class of such microsensors is based on molecular dyes encapsulated or dispersed either in polymer matrices or in liquid systems exhibiting different colors upon pH variations. They are efficient but often rely on sophisticated and costly syntheses, and present significant risks of leakage and photobleaching damages, which is detrimental for mainstream applications. Another approach consists in exploiting the distance-dependent plasmonic properties of metallic nanoparticles. Still, assembling nanoparticles into dispersible colloidal pH-sensitive sensors remains a challenge. Here, we show how to combine optically active plasmonic gold nanoparticles and pH-responsive thin shells into "plasmocapsules". Upon pH change, plasmocapsules swell or shrink. Concomitantly, the distance between the gold nanoparticles embedded in the polymeric matrix varies, resulting in an unambiguous color change. Billions of micron-size sensors can thus be easily fabricated. They are non-intrusive, reusable, and sense local pH changes. Each plasmocapsule is an independent reversible microsensor over a large pH range. Finally, we demonstrate their potential use for the detection of bacterial growth, thus proving that plasmocapsules are a new class of sensing materials.

5. Effectiveness of water system chemical disinfection against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections, despite a not-so-obvious connection.

Abstract

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a well-recognized opportunistic pathogen frequently responsible for hospital-acquired infections. Acquisition routes of P aeruginosa are both endogenous and exogenous, including transmission from a portion of the hospital water system. The impact of disinfection procedures of the water system and description routes of P aeruginosa transmission in a surgical intensive care unit over a 2-year period were investigated. Two distinct periods A and B were considered, respectively, before and after the disinfection. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to compare isolates recovered from patients and tap water. Overall, 21.3% of tap water samples were positive but with a significantly lower rate in period B. Concomitantly, the prevalence of patients positive for P aeruginosa decreased from 2.6% to 1%, suggesting a correlation between the presence of environmental sources and patient contaminations. The results revealed that 18% of patients were involved in cross-transmission events not related to any isolate recovered from water, suggesting transmission through care practices. Conversely, only 1 environmental transmission event was suspected in a patient. Although the link between the hospital environment and patients was unclear, HCW-associated care practices could be related to contaminated point-of-use waters and then indirect spreading to patients. • Pseudomonas aeruginosa ICU-acquired infections, with environmental origin suggested. • Maintenance operations on the water system. • Positive P aeruginosa tap water samples decreased after maintenance. • Reduction of P aeruginosa -positive patients decreased after maintenance operations. • Typing methods and epidemiological data suggesting rather transmission through care practices. Abstract

International audience; Introduction: We aimed to describe patients with coexisting infective endocarditis (IE) and bacterial meningitis (BM).Methods: We merged two large prospective cohorts, an IE cohort and a BM cohort, with only cases of definite IE and community-acquired meningitis. We compared patients who had IE and BM concurrently to patients with IE only and BM only.Results: Among the 1030 included patients, we identified 42 patients with IE-BM (4.1%). Baseline characteristics of patients with IE-BM were mostly similar to those of patients with IE, but meningitis was the predominant presentation at admission (39/42, 92.3%). Causative pathogens were predominantly Streptococcus pneumoniae (18/42, 42.9%) and Staphylococcus aureus (14/42, 33.3%). All pneumococcal IE were associated with BM (18/18). BM due to oral and group D streptococci, Streptococcus agalactiae, and S. aureus were frequently associated with IE (14/30, 46.7%). Three-month mortality was 28.6% in patients with IE-BM, 20.5% in patients with IE, and 16.6% in patients with BM.Conclusions: Patients with pneumococcal IE or altered mental status during IE must be investigated for BM. Patients with S. aureus, oral and group D streptococcal or enterococcal BM, or unfavorable outcome in pneumococcal meningitis would benefit from an echocardiography. Patients with the dual infection have the worst prognosis. Their identification is mandatory to initiate appropriate treatment.

Abstract

Background Aspecific scoring systems are used to predict the risk of death postsurgery in patients with infective endocarditis ( IE ). The purpose of the present study was both to analyze the risk factors for in‐hospital death, which complicates surgery for IE , and to create a mortality risk score based on the results of this analysis. Methods and Results Outcomes of 361 consecutive patients (mean age, 59.1±15.4 years) who had undergone surgery for IE in 8 European centers of cardiac surgery were recorded prospectively, and a risk factor analysis (multivariable logistic regression) for in‐hospital death was performed. The discriminatory power of a new predictive scoring system was assessed with the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Score validation procedures were carried out. Fifty‐six (15.5%) patients died postsurgery. BMI >27 kg/m 2 (odds ratio [ OR ], 1.79; P =0.049), estimated glomerular filtration rate OR , 3.52; P IV ( OR , 2.11; P =0.024), systolic pulmonary artery pressure >55 mm Hg ( OR , 1.78; P =0.032), and critical state ( OR , 2.37; P =0.017) were independent predictors of in‐hospital death. A scoring system was devised to predict in‐hospital death postsurgery for IE (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.780; 95% CI, 0.734–0.822). The score performed better than 5 of 6 scoring systems for in‐hospital death after cardiac surgery that were considered. Conclusions A simple scoring system based on risk factors for in‐hospital death was specifically created to predict mortality risk postsurgery in patients with IE .

40. [4]Cyclo-N-alkyl-2,7-carbazoles: Influence of the Alkyl Chain Length on the Structural, Electronic, and Charge Transport Properties

Abstract

Macrocycles possessing radially oriented π-orbitals have experienced a fantastic development. However, their incorporation in organic electronic devices remains very scarce. In this work, we aim at bridging the gap between organic electronics and nanorings by reporting the first detailed structure–properties–device performance relationship study of organic functional materials based on a nanoring system. Three [4]cyclo-N-alkyl-2,7-carbazoles bearing different alkyl chains on their nitrogen atoms have been synthesized and characterized by combined experimental and theoretical approaches. This study includes electrochemical, photophysical, thermal, and structural solid-state measurements and charge transport properties investigations. An optimized protocol of the Pt approach has been developed to synthesize the [4]cyclocarbazoles in high yield (52–64%), of great interest for further development of nanorings, especially in materials science. The charge transport properties of [4]cyclocarbazoles and model compound [8]cycloparaphenylene ([8]CPP) have been studied. Although no field effect (FE) mobility was recorded for the benchmark [8]CPP, FE mobility values of ca. 10–5cm2·V–1·s–1were recorded for the [4]cyclocarbazoles. The characteristics (threshold voltage VTH, subthreshold swing SS, trapping energy ΔE) recorded for the three [4]cyclocarbazoles appear to be modulated by the alkyl chain length borne by the nitrogen atoms. Remarkably, the space-charge-limited current mobilities measured for the [4]cyclocarbazoles are about 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of [8]CPP(1.37/2.78 × 10–4cm2·V–1·s–1for the [4]cyclocarbazoles vs 1.21 × 10–7cm2·V–1·s–1for [8]CPP), highlighting the strong effect of nitrogen bridges on the charge transport properties. The whole study opens the way to the use of nanorings in electronics, which is now the next step of their development.

Abstract

Photoelectron excitations into unoccupied energy states are fundamental in solid-state physics and many modern applications. The operation of such internal electronic transitions relies not only on photon absorption efficiency, which is pivotal in sensing, photovoltaics, active plasmonics, etc., but also on light–matter interactions and near/far-field spectroscopic techniques. Here, we report on a spectroscopic absorption fingerprint in magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) responses of various nanoparticulate systems. MCD spectra acquired at low temperatures on assemblies of uncoupled/coupled Ag and Au nanoparticles reveal asymmetric MCD spectral line shapes strongly depending on the nature and shape of nanoparticles and on their interparticular interactions. Assembling for instance the NPs into 2D networks with interparticle distances allowing dipolar interactions or transforming the spherical nanoparticles into disks was found to significantly alter the magneto-optic response in the spectral line shape. The findings are interpreted within the framework of chiral magneto-plasmonic effects by considering the k-dependent electronic states involved in both inter- and intraband electronic transitions.

45. From Chains to Monolayers: Nanoparticle Assembly Driven by Smectic Topological Defects

Abstract

In this Letter, we show how advanced hierarchical structures of topological defects in the so-called smectic oily streaks can be used to sequentially transfer their geometrical features to gold nanospheres. We use two kinds of topological defects, 1D dislocations and 2D ribbon-like topological defects. The large trapping efficiency of the smectic dislocation cores not only surpasses that of the elastically distorted zones around the cores but also surpasses the one of the 2D ribbon-like topological defect. This enables the formation of a large number of aligned NP chains within the dislocation cores that can be quasi-fully filled without any significant aggregation outside of the cores. When the NP concentration is large enough to entirely fill the dislocation cores, the LC confinement varies from 1D to 2D. We demonstrate that the 2D topological defect cores induce a confinement that leads to planar hexagonal networks of NPs. We then draw the phase diagram driven by NP concentration, associated with the sequential confinements induced by these two kinds of topological defects. Owing to the excellent large-scale order of these defect cores, not only the NP chains but also the NP hexagonal networks can be oriented along the desired direction, suggesting a possible new route for the creation of either 1D or 2D highly anisotropic NP networks. In addition, these results open rich perspectives based on the possible creation of coexisting NP assemblies of different kinds, localized in different confining areas of a same smectic film that would thus interact thanks to their proximity but also would interact via the surrounding soft matter matrix.
