Abstract Objective The objective of this study is to develop a novel therapeutic approach for the treatment of ovarian cancer while investigating the role of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in the context of ovarian cancer therapy. The primary aim is to establish a technical procedure for the isolation of tumor cells, lymphocytes, and dendritic cells (DCs) derived from ovarian cancer tissues or ascites. Subsequently, the focus lies on the generation of dendritic cell-tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (DC-TILs) exhibiting specific cytotoxic capabilities aimed at targeted therapeutic interventions. The cytotoxic impact of DC-TIL interactions on tumor cells was investigated through in vitro experimentation. This research aims to provide fundamental experimental insights for the future clinical advancement of TIL therapy in ovarian cancer. Methods The experimental samples included fresh surgical specimens and ascites specimens procured from three patients (ranging in age from 32 to 75), sourced from the Department of Gynecology at the Third Bethune Hospital of Jilin University. TILs were extracted through in vitro isolation from solid tumor tissues, while primary tumor cells and DCs were obtained from ascites specimens. Tumor-specific antigens derived from patient tumor cells were utilized to stimulate the maturation of DCs. TILs were subsequently co-cultured with antigen-stimulated DC cells. Subsequently, TILs with specific killing effects were obtained, and the cytotoxic impact of DC-TILs on tumor cells was detected in vitro. Results (1) TILs were successfully obtained through expansion from the tumor tissue of a patient diagnosed with ovarian cancer. (2) DCs were successfully induced from ascites cells harvested from patients diagnosed with ovarian cancer. (3) TILs significantly enhanced the cytotoxicity of tumor cells following DC stimulation. Conclusion TILs have the capacity to augment the cytotoxicity directed towards tumor cells following DC stimulation.

Abstract In order to further improve the output torque and stability of the external rotor permanent magnet synchronous motor, a double‐layer non‐uniform Halbach external rotor permanent magnet synchronous motor (DNH) structure is proposed and optimised. Finite element models of DNH and other structures are established to compare the electromagnetic characteristics of these motors and verify the superiority of the proposed structure. Secondly, the multi‐objective whale optimisation algorithm is improved, and the algorithm is tested by test function to verify the improvement effect. Further, the Spearman correlation of the parameters is calculated, and the parameters are layered. The first layer parameters are optimised by the improved multi‐objective whale optimisation algorithm, and the second layer parameters are optimised by parameter scanning. Finally, the motor performance of the initial scheme, single layer optimisation scheme, and hierarchical optimisation scheme is compared by simulation. The simulation results show that the hierarchical optimisation method is superior to the single layer optimisation method. By comparing with other schemes, the performance advantages of hierarchical optimisation DNH in terms of average output torque, cogging torque, torque ripple, permanent magnet cost and other parameters are proved, as well as the effectiveness of the optimisation method.

Abstract Climate change can alter wetland extent and function, but such impacts are perplexing. Here, changes in wetland characteristics over North America from 25° to 53° North are projected under two climate scenarios using a state-of-the-science Earth system model. At the continental scale, annual wetland area decreases by ~10% (6%-14%) under the high emission scenario, but spatiotemporal changes vary, reaching up to ±50%. As the dominant driver of these changes shifts from precipitation to temperature in the higher emission scenario, wetlands undergo substantial drying during summer season when biotic processes peak. The projected disruptions to wetland seasonality cycles imply further impacts on biodiversity in major wetland habitats of upper Mississippi, Southeast Canada, and the Everglades. Furthermore, wetlands are projected to significantly shrink in cold regions due to the increased infiltration as warmer temperature reduces soil ice. The large dependence of the projections on climate change scenarios underscores the importance of emission mitigation to sustaining wetland ecosystems in the future.

Abstract Sea‐level rise (SLR) poses a severe threat to the coastal environment through seawater intrusion into freshwater aquifers. The rising groundwater table also exacerbates the risk of pluvial, fluvial, and groundwater flooding in coastal regions. However, current Earth system models (ESMs) commonly ignore the exchanges of water at the land‐ocean interface. To address this gap, we developed a novel land‐ocean hydrologic coupling scheme in a state‐of‐the‐science ESM, the Energy Exascale Earth System Model version 2 (E3SMv2). The new scheme includes the lateral exchange between seawater and groundwater and the vertical infiltration of seawater driven by the SLR‐induced inundation. Simulations were performed with the updated E3SMv2 for the global land‐ocean interface to assess the impacts of SLR on coastal groundwater under a high CO2 emission scenario. By the middle of this century, seawater infiltration on the inundated areas will be the dominant component in the land‐ocean coupling process, while the lateral subsurface flow exchange will be much smaller. The SLR‐induced seawater infiltration will raise the groundwater levels, enhance evapotranspiration, and increase runoff with distinct spatial patterns globally in the future. Although the coupling process is induced by SLR, we found topography and warming temperature have more control on the coupling impacts, probably due to the relatively modest magnitude of SLR during the selected future period. Overall, our study suggests significant groundwater and seawater exchange at the land‐ocean interface, which needs to be considered in ESMs.

Abstract Coastal zone compound flooding (CF) can be caused by the interactive fluvial and oceanic processes, particularly when coastal backwater propagates upstream and interacts with high river discharge. The modeling of CF is limited in existing Earth System Models (ESMs) due to coarse mesh resolutions and one‐way coupled river‐ocean components. In this study, we present a novel multi‐scale coupling framework within the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM), integrating global atmosphere and land with interactively coupled river and ocean models using different meshes with refined resolutions near the coastline. To evaluate this framework, we conducted ensemble simulations of a CF event (Hurricane Irene in 2011) in a Mid‐Atlantic estuary. The results demonstrate that the novel E3SM configuration can reasonably reproduce river discharge and sea surface height variations. The two‐way river‐ocean coupling improves the representation of coastal backwater effects at the terrestrial‐aquatic interface that are caused by the combined actions of tide and storm surge during the CF event, thus providing a valuable modeling tool for better understanding the river‐estuary‐ocean dynamics in extreme events under climate change. Notably, our results show that the most significant CF impacts occur when the highest storm surge generated by a tropical cyclone meets with a moderate river discharge. This study highlights the state‐of‐the‐art advancements developed within E3SM for simulating multi‐scale coastal processes.

Background: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is known as the most common complication of diabetes, resulting from a complex inheritance-environment interaction without effective clinical treatments. Herein, we revealed the protective effects and mechanisms of Zn(II)-curcumin, a curcumin derivative, against streptozotocin-induced DN in rats in the presence or absence of cadmium exposure.Methods: The present study focused on investigating the therapy of Zn(II)-curcumin against cadmium-aggravated DN by regulating gut microbiota, metabolism, inflammation and zinc homeostasis based on pathological changes, TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), 16S rRNA gene sequencing and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS).Results: We found Zn(II)-curcumin significantly mitigated the cadmium-aggravated phenotypes of diabetic nephropathy, as indicated by the remission of renal dysfunction, pathological changes, inflammation and zinc dyshomeostasis in streptozotocin-treated rats exposed to cadmium. Administration of Zn(II)-curcumin significantly alleviated the dysbiosis of gut microbiota and the changes of serum metabolite profiles in rats treated with streptozotocin in combination with cadmium. Notably, fecal microbial transplantation identified the ability of Zn(II)-curcumin to regulate renal function, inflammation and zinc homeostasis was partly dependent on the gut microbiota.Conclusion: These findings revealed that Zn(II)-curcumin alleviated cadmium-aggravated diabetic nephropathy by reshaping the gut microbiota and zinc homeostasis, which provided unique insights into the mechanisms of the treatment and prevention of diabetic nephropathy.

BackgroundThe causal relationship between juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and primary ovarian failure (POF) remains uncertain. To elucidate this relationship, we employed a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis.MethodsThe single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with JIA were obtained from a previously published genome-wide association study (GWAS), while the pooled data for POF originated from the FinnGen consortium. The study populations consisted exclusively of individuals of European descent. In our Mendelian randomization analysis, we performed inverse-variance weighted analysis, weighted-median analysis, weighted-mode analysis and Mendelian randomization-Egger regression analysis, supplemented by sensitivity analyses to validate the accuracy and robustness of the findings.ResultsThe IVW (OR = 1.23, 95% CI 1.06-1.43; P = 0.007) and weighted median (OR = 1.25, 95% CI 1.06-1.47; P = 0.009), along with sensitivity analysis validation, provide compelling evidence of a significant causal association between JIA and POF.ConclusionThe study revealed a significant causal association between genetically predicted JIA and POF, indicating that JIA significantly elevates the risk of developing POF. Therefore, it is recommended to implement screening for premature ovarian failure in women diagnosed with JIA.

Abstract Ground heat flux (G0) is a key component of the land‐surface energy balance of high‐latitude regions. Despite its crucial role in controlling permafrost degradation due to global warming, G0 is sparsely measured and not well represented in the outputs of global scale model simulation. In this study, an analytical heat transfer model is tested to reconstruct G0 across seasons using soil temperature series from field measurements, Global Climate Model, and climate reanalysis outputs. The probability density functions of ground heat flux and of model parameters are inferred using available G0 data (measured or modeled) for snow‐free period as a reference. When observed G0 is not available, a numerical model is applied using estimates of surface heat flux (dependent on parameters) as the top boundary condition. These estimates (and thus the corresponding parameters) are verified by comparing the distributions of simulated and measured soil temperature at several depths. Aided by state‐of‐the‐art uncertainty quantification methods, the developed G0 reconstruction approach provides novel means for assessing the probabilistic structure of the ground heat flux for regional permafrost change studies.

Abstract Light-absorbing particles (LAP) deposited on seasonal snowpack can result in snow darkening, earlier snowmelt, and regional climate change. However, their future evolution and contributions to snowpack change relative to global warming remain unclear. Here, using Earth System Model simulations, we project significantly reduced black carbon deposition by 2081-2100, which reduces the December-May average LAP-induced radiative forcing in snow over the Northern Hemisphere from 1.3 Wm−2 during 1995-2014 to 0.65 (SSP126) and 0.49 (SSP585) Wm−2. We quantify separately the contributions of climate change and LAP evolution on future snowpack and demonstrate that projected LAP changes in snow over the Tibetan Plateau will alleviate future snowpack loss due to climate change by 52.1 ± 8.0% and 8.0 ± 1.1% at the end of the century for the two scenarios, mainly due to reduced black carbon contamination. Our findings highlight a cleaner snow future and its benefits for future water supply from snowmelt especially under the sustainable development pathway of SSP126.

Reducing fruit and vegetable waste and maintaining quality has become challenging for everyone. Nanotechnology is a new and intriguing technology that is currently being implemented in fruit and vegetable preservation. Silver nanomaterials provide superior antibacterial qualities, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, which expands their potential applications in fruit and vegetable preservation. Silver nanomaterials include silver nanocomposites and Ag-MOF, of which silver nanocomposites are mainly composed of silver nanoparticles. Notably, not all kinds of silver nanoparticles utilized in the preservation of fruits and vegetables are thoroughly described. Therefore, the synthesis, mechanism of action, and advancements in research on silver nanocomposites for fruit and vegetable preservation were discussed in this study.

Abstract Flow direction modeling consists of (a) an accurate representation of the river network and (b) digital elevation model (DEM) processing to preserve characteristics with hydrological significance. In part 1 of our study, we presented a mesh‐independent approach to representing river networks on different types of meshes. This follow‐up part 2 study presents a novel DEM processing approach for flow direction modeling. This approach consists of (a) a topological relationship‐based hybrid breaching‐filling method to conduct stream burning for the river network and (b) a modified depression removal method for rivers and hillslopes. Our methods reduce modifications to surface elevations and provide a robust two‐step procedure to remove local depressions in DEM. They are mesh‐independent and can be applied to both structured and unstructured meshes. We applied our new methods with different model configurations to the Susquehanna River Basin. The results show that topological relationship‐based stream burning and depression‐filling methods can reproduce the correct river networks, providing high‐quality flow direction and other characteristics for hydrologic and Earth system models.

Abstract Applications of process‐based models (PBM) for predictions are confounded by multiple uncertainties and computational burdens, resulting in appreciable errors. A novel modeling framework combining a high‐fidelity PBM with surrogate and machine learning (ML) models is developed to tackle these challenges and applied for streamflow prediction. A surrogate model permits high computational efficiency of a PBM solution at a minimum loss of its accuracy. A novel probabilistic ML model partitions the PBM‐surrogate prediction errors into reducible and irreducible types, quantifying their distributions that arise due to both explicitly perceived uncertainties (such as parametric) or those that are entirely hidden to the modeler (not included or unexpected). Using this approach, we demonstrate a substantial improvement of streamflow predictive accuracy for a case study urbanized watershed. Such a framework provides an efficient solution combining the strengths of high‐fidelity and physics‐agnostic models for a wide range of prediction problems in geosciences.

Background: With rapid development in agriculture and industry, water polluted with heavy metallic ions has come to be a serious problem. Adsorption-based methods are simple, efficient, and broadly used to eliminate heavy metals. Conventional adsorption materials have the problems of secondary environmental contamination. Hydrogels are considered effective adsorbents, and those prepared from biopolymers are biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic, safe to handle, and increasingly used to adsorb heavy metal ions. Aim of review: The natural origin and easy degradability of biopolymer hydrogels make them potential for development in environmental remediation. Its water absorption capacity enables it to efficiently adsorb various pollutants in the aqueous environment, and its internal pore channels increase the specific surface area for adsorption, which can provide abundant active binding sites for heavy metal ions through chemical modification. Key scientific concept of review: As the most representative of biopolymer hydrogels, polysaccharide-based hydrogels are diverse, physically and chemically stable, and can undergo complex chemical modifications to enhance their performance, thus exhibiting superior ability to remove contaminants. This review summarizes the preparation methods of hydrogels, followed by a discussion of the main categories and applications of polysaccharide-based biopolymer hydrogels.

Glucosinolates are a kind of important sulfur-containing anionic hydrophilic natural products in cruciferous vegetables. Under the catalysis of endogenous myrosinase, glucosinolates can be hydrolyzed to produce active substances with anti-cancer, anti-oxidation, antimicrobial and other effects, which have attracted wide attention of researchers. Sulforaphane is a thioglucose monomer with the best anticancer effect and the strongest efficacy. As an effective component of drugs or functional foods, it has high research value and broad application prospects. In this study, the source, structure, properties, functional activities of sulforaphane are summarized, and its extraction technology, separation and purification methods and anticancer applications are systematically introduced. The research prospect is discussed and anticipated, in order to provide research basis and technical support for the research and development of sulforaphane functional components and high value-added utilization.

Abstract The 21st century evapotranspiration (ET) trends over the continental U.S. are assessed using innovative, energy‐based principles. Annual ET is projected to increase with high confidence at the rate of 20 mm for every 1℃ of rise in near‐surface air temperature, or 0.45 or 0.98 mm/year/year, depending on the emission scenario. The ET trajectory is dominated (58%) by the increase of land‐surface net radiative energy. An enhancement of the fraction of energy taken up by ET becomes a more important controller (53%) in late 21st century, under the high emission scenario. This increase is explained by the “tug of war” between atmospheric vapor demand and land‐surface ability to supply water. An assessment of future water availability (precipitation minus ET) shows no significant changes at the continental scale. This outcome nevertheless hides strong spatial variability, emphasizing the role of ET in shaping the distribution of water availability among human populations.

Sulforaphane (SFN) is a natural isothiocyanate compound widely abundant in cruciferous vegetables with multiple bioactive functions. However, traditional analytical methods for the extraction and determination of SFN are cumbersome, time-consuming, and low sensitivity with large amounts of organic solvents. Herein, novel magnetic COF-on-COFs (MB-COFs) were fabricated using Fe3O4 as a magnetic core and COFs-1 grown with COFs-2 as a shell, and they were used as efficient adsorbents of magnetic dispersive solid-phase extraction for rapid quantification of SFN in cruciferous vegetables by combining with HPLC-MS/MS. At the optimal ratio of COFs-1 to COFs-2, MB-COFs had a spherical cluster-like structure and a rough surface, with a sufficient magnetic response for rapid magnetic separation (1 min). Due to the introduction of Fe3O4 and COFs-2, MB-COFs exhibited outstanding extraction efficiencies for SFN (92.5–97.3%), which was about 18–72% higher than that of the bare COFs. Moreover, MB-COFs showed good adsorption capacity (Qm of 18.0 mg/g), rapid adsorption (5 min) and desorption (30 s) to SFN, and favorable reusability (≥7 cycles) by virtue of their unique hierarchical porous structure. The adsorption kinetic data were well fitted by the pseudo-second-order, Ritchie-second-order, intra-particle diffusion, and Elovich models, while the adsorption isotherm data were highly consistent with the Langmuir, Temkin, and Redlich–Peterson models. Finally, under the optimized conditions, the developed method showed a wide linear range (0.001–0.5 mg/L), high sensitivity (limits of quantification of 0.18–0.31 μg/L), satisfactory recoveries (82.2–96.2%) and precisions (1.8–7.9%), and a negligible matrix effect (0.82–0.97). Compared to previous methods, the proposed method is faster and more sensitive and significantly reduces the use of organic solvents, which can achieve the efficient detection of large-scale samples in practical scenarios. This work reveals the high practical potential of MB-COFs as adsorbents for efficient extraction and sensitive analysis of SFN in cruciferous vegetables.

Tea polyphenols (TPs) are important bioactive compounds in tea and have excellent physiological regulation functions. However, the extraction and purification of TPs are key technologies affecting their further application, and the chemical instability, poor bioavailability of TPs are major challenges for researchers. In the past decade, therefore, research and development of advanced carrier systems for the delivery of TPs has been greatly promoted to improve their poor stability and poor bioavailability. In this review, the properties and function of TPs are introduced, and the recent advances in the extraction and purification technologies are systematically summarized. Particularly, the intelligent delivery of TPs via novel nano-carriers is critically reviewed, and the application of TPs nano-delivery system in medical field and food industry is also described. Finally, the main limitations, current challenges and future perspectives are highlighted in order to provide research ideas for exploiting nano-delivery carriers and their application in TPs.

Background: Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs), as insecticides or acaricides, are widely used in agricultural products to ensure agricultural production. However, widespread use of OPs leads to environmental contamination and significant negative consequences on biodiversity, food security, and water resources. Therefore, developing a sensitive and rapid method to determine OPs residues in different matrices is necessary. Originally, the enzyme inhibition methods are often used as preliminary screens of OPs in crops. Many studies on the characteristic of Au nanomaterials have constantly been emerging in the past decade. Combined with anisotropic Au nanomaterials, enzyme inhibition methods have the advantages of high sensitivity, durability, and high stability. Aim of Review: This review aims to summarize the principles and strategies of gold (Au) nanomaterials in enzyme inhibition methods, including colorimetric (dispersion, particle size of Au nanomaterials) and fluorometric (fluorescence energy transfer, internal filtration effect) detection, and electrochemical sensing system (shape of Au nanomaterials, Au nanomaterials combined with other nanomaterials). The application of enzyme inhibition in agricultural products and research progress was also outlined. Next, this review illustrates the advantages of Au nanomaterial-based enzyme inhibition methods compared with conventional enzyme inhibition methods. The detection limits and linear range of colorimetric and fluorometric detection and electrochemical biosensors have also been provided. At last, key perspectives, trends, gaps, and future research directions are proposed. In order to make the identification and utilization of nutritional quality components in Chinese cabbage more predictive, to obtain ideal raw materials, and to help screen functional Chinese cabbage varieties that have high nutritional value, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the nutritional quality of different Chinese cabbage varieties. In this study, 17 nutritional quality indexes of 35 Chinese cabbage varieties, including crude fiber (CF), crude protein (CP), vitamin C (VC), glucose (Glc), fructose (Fru), malic acid (MA), citric acid (CA), oxalic acid (OA), total amino acid (TAA) and CA, K, Mg, P, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn, were analyzed using diversity analysis, correlation analysis, principal component analysis, membership function analysis and cluster analysis. The results showed that there were different degrees of variation in the 17 nutritional quality indexes, and the coefficients of variation ranged from 11.45% to 91.47%. The correlation analysis found that there were significant or extremely significant correlations between different nutrient elements of Chinese cabbage, which indicated that principal component analysis could be carried out, and the comprehensive score (D value) of different materials could be obtained using principal component analysis and the membership function method. The nutritional quality of Chinese cabbage was classified into five grades by cluster analysis. Finally, a mathematical model for evaluating the nutritional quality of Chinese cabbage was established using the D value and multiple stepwise regression methods, and 10 key indexes were selected from the 17 indexes, which could be used for the rapid identification of the nutritional quality of Chinese cabbage. This study provided a theoretical basis for the nutritional quality evaluation and variety breeding of Chinese cabbage.

Abstract River networks are important features in surface hydrology. However, accurately representing river networks in spatially distributed hydrologic and Earth system models is often sensitive to the model's spatial resolution. Specifically, river networks are often misrepresented because of the mismatch between the model's spatial resolution and river network details, resulting in significant uncertainty in the projected flow direction. In this study, we developed a topological relationship‐based river network representation method for spatially distributed hydrologic models. This novel method uses (a) graph theory algorithms to simplify real‐world vector‐based river networks and assist in mesh generation; and (b) a topological relationship‐based method to reconstruct conceptual river networks. The main advantages of our method are that (a) it combines the strengths of vector‐based and DEM raster‐based river network extraction methods; and (b) it is mesh‐independent and can be applied to both structured and unstructured meshes. This method paves a path for advanced terrain analysis and hydrologic modeling across different scales.

At present, nano-carrier materials with antibacterial activity are of great significance. Due to the widespread resistance of many pathogenic microorganisms, it has seriously threatened human health. The natural antimicrobial substances extracted from fruits and vegetables can significantly improve their stability combined with nano-carrier materials. The resistance of pathogenic microorganisms will be substantially reduced, greatly enhancing the effect of active antimicrobial substances. Nanotechnology has excellent research prospects in the food industry, antibacterial preservation, food additives, food packaging, and other fields. This paper introduces nano-carrier materials and preparation techniques for loading and encapsulating active antibacterial substances in detail by constructing a nano-release system for active antibacterial substances. The antibacterial effect can be achieved by protecting them from adverse external conditions and destroying the membrane of pathogenic microorganisms. The mechanism of the slow release of the bacteriostatic active substance is also described. The mechanism of carrier loading and release is mainly through non-covalent forces between the bacteriostatic active substance and the carrier material, such as hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, van der Waals forces, electrostatic interactions, etc., as well as the loading and adsorption of the bacteriostatic active substance by the chemical assembly. Finally, its wide application in food and medicine is introduced. It is hoped to provide a theoretical basis and technical support for the efficient utilization and product development of bacteriostatic active substances.

The Qinghai Province of China is located in the northeast region of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP) and carries abundant yak genetic resources. Previous investigations of archaeological records, mitochondrial DNA, and Y chromosomal markers have suggested that Qinghai was the major center of yak domestication. In the present study, we examined the genomic diversity, differentiation, and selection signatures of 113 Qinghai yak, including 42 newly sequenced Qinghai yak and 71 publicly available individuals, from nine yak breeds/populations (wild, Datong, Huanhu, Xueduo, Yushu, Qilian, Geermu, Tongde, and Huzhu white) using high-depth whole-genome resequencing data. We observed that most of Qinghai yak breeds/populations have abundant genomic diversity based on four genomic parameters (nucleotide diversity, inbreeding coefficients, linkage disequilibrium decay, and runs of homozygosity). Population genetic structure analysis showed that Qinghai yak have two lineages with two ancestral origins and that nine yak breeds/populations are clustered into three distinct groups of wild yak, Geermu yak, and seven other domestic yak breeds/populations. FST values showed moderate genetic differentiation between wild yak, Geermu yak, and the other Qinghai yak breeds/populations. Positive selection signals were detected in candidate genes associated with disease resistance (CDK2AP2, PLEC, and CYB5B), heat stress (NFAT5, HSF1, and SLC25A48), pigmentation (MCAM, RNF26, and BOP1), vision (C1QTNF5, MFRP, and TAX1BP3), milk quality (OPLAH and GRINA), neurodevelopment (SUSD4, INSYN1, and PPP1CA), and meat quality (ZRANB1), using the integrated PI, composite likelihood ratio (CLR), and FST methods. These findings offer new insights into the genetic mechanisms underlying target traits in yak and provide important information for understanding the genomic characteristics of yak breeds/populations in Qinghai.

Abstract Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains a prevalent chronic airway inflammatory disease. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are associated with inflammation regulation; therefore, we examined distinct effects of circRNA FOXO3 (circFOXO3) against pneumonic inflammatory processes in COPD. Methods We first quantified and localized circFOXO3 in mouse lung epithelial cell line MLE12 by quantitative reverse-transcription PCR and in situ hybridization. Next, circFOXO3 was suppressed by therapeutic administration of circFOXO3 knockdown lentivirus in mice exposed to air or cigarette smoke (CS) for 12 weeks, and several hallmarks of COPD were evaluated. Results We noticed that circFOXO3 is upregulated in CS-exposed lungs and cigarette smoke extract (CSE)-treated murine alveolar epithelial cells. Knockdown of circFOXO3 attenuated the release of CXCL1 and IL-6 as well as inflammatory processes in the lungs of CS-exposed mice. In addition, we identified miR-214-3p as a circFOXO3-targeted microRNA. MiR-214-3p overexpression exerted protective effects against pneumonic inflammation after CS exposure. Silencing of circFOXO3 downregulated IKK-β mRNA (miR-214-3p’s target), resulting in the dysfunction of the NF-κB signaling pathway and attenuation of CSE-induced inflammatory-cytokine expression. Conclusions Collectively, these findings reveal a crucial function of circFOXO3 in the pathological remodeling related to CS-induced inflammatory processes. Hence, circFOXO3 might be a good target for the treatment of inflammatory disorders similar to CS-induced lung inflammation.

The identification of unknown groundwater pollution sources is one of the most important premises in groundwater pollution prevention and remediation. In this paper, an exploratory application of a least squares method to identify the unknown groundwater pollution source is conducted. Supported by a small amount of observation data and the analytical solutions of the pollutant transport model, the initial concentration, the leakage location and the pollutant mass are identified by using the least squares method under a sand tank experiment and a gas station area. In the sand tank experiment, it is found that the fitting errors of three cross-sections are within 6%. In the gas station area, it is found that the results are nearly consistent with the site investigation information. The results indicate that the least squares method has considerable application values in the identification of groundwater pollution sources. In this work, we establish a two-dimensional axisymmetric simulation model to numerically study the impacting behaviors between oil droplets and an immiscible aqueous solution based on the three-phase field method. The numerical model is established by using the commercial software of COMSOL Multiphysics first and then validated by comparing the numerical results with the previous experimental study. The simulation results show that under the impact of oil droplets, a crater will form on the surface of the aqueous solution, which firstly expands and then collapses with the transfer and dissipation of kinetic energy of this three-phase system. As for the droplet, it flattens, spreads, stretches, or immerses on the crater surface and finally achieves an equilibrium state at the gas–liquid interface after experiencing several sinking-bouncing circles. The impacting velocity, fluid density, viscosity, interfacial tension, droplet size, and the property of non-Newtonian fluids all play important roles in the impact between oil droplets and aqueous solution. The conclusions can help to cognize the mechanism of droplet impact on an immiscible fluid and provide useful guidelines for those applications concerning droplet impact.

Cruciferous vegetables are rich in glucosinolates, which can be metabolized to produce the antitumor compound indole-3-carbinol (I3C). The conventional solvent extraction method for I3C is inefficient. To improve the extraction efficiency of I3C from cruciferous vegetables, we prepared a metal-organic framework (MOF) material (Fe3O4@Zn-Al-LDH@B-D-MIL-100). First, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were introduced to layered double hydroxides by in situ polymerization. Then, the MOF material was grown on the surface of the layered double hydroxide by co-precipitation and the layer-by-layer self-assembly method. This gave Fe3O4@Zn-Al-LDH@B-D-MIL-100, which was characterized using a variety of techniques. The results showed that Fe3O4@Zn-Al-LDH@B-D-MIL-100 had a double-layer porous structure, excellent superparamagnetism (11.54955 emu/g), a large specific surface area (174.04 m2/g), and a pore volume (0.26 cm3/g). The extraction conditions for I3C were optimized. Non-linear fitting of the static adsorption model showed that the adsorption was mainly monolayer. Fe3O4@Zn-Al-LDH@B-D-MIL-100 had fast adsorption kinetics and could extract 95% of I3C in 45 min. It is superior to the traditional solvent extraction method because of its high enrichment efficiency in a short time and environmental friendliness. The successful preparation of the new nanomaterial will provide a new reference for the enrichment and extraction of the I3C industry.

In this study, a novel metal-organic framework (M-ZIF-8@ZIF-67) was successfully prepared using the single layer Fe3O4-ZIF-8 as magnetic core and wrapped a layer of ZIF-67 outer. This M-ZIF-8@ZIF-67 was employed as an adsorbent for the adsorption and removal of fipronil and its metabolites from environmental water and cucumber samples. The characterization results suggested that M-ZIF-8@ZIF-67 has the double layer structure a polyhedral structure with uniform pores, while ZIF-67 was successfully coated on the surface of Fe3O4-ZIF-8. The unique structure endowed M-ZIF-8@ZIF-67 a high surface area (219 m2/g) and high adsorption capacity for fipronil, fipronil desulfinyl, fipronil sulfide and fipronil sulfone. To our knowledge, this is the first report detailing the adsorption properties of M-ZIF-8@ZIF-67 with double layer structure relating to the adsorption and removal of pesticides. Furthermore, the adsorption model analysis demonstrated that the static adsorption data fitted the Freundlich bimolecular layer adsorption model better than the Langmuir monolayer adsorption model. This study indicates that M-ZIF-8@ZIF-67 has significant potential in the adsorption and removal of fipronil and its metabolites in water and vegetable samples.

Carbendazim (CBZ), a systemic, broad-spectrum benzimidazole fungicide, is widely used to control fungal diseases in agricultural products. Its residues might pose risks to human health and the environment. Therefore, it is warranted to establish a rapid and reliable method for its residual quantification. Herein, we proposed a competitive assay that combined aptamer (DNA) specific recognition and bimetallic nanozyme gold@platinum (Au@Pt) catalysis to trace the CBZ residue. The DNA was labeled onto bimetallic nanozyme Au@Pt surface to produce Au@Pt probes (Au@Pt-DNA). The magnetic Fe3O4 was functionalized with a complementary strand of DNA (C-DNA) to form Fe3O4 probes (Fe3O4-C-DNA). Subsequently, the CBZ and the Fe3O4 probes competitively react with Au@Pt probes to form two Au@Pt-DNA biosensors (Au@Pt-ssDNA-CBZ and Au@Pt-dsDNA-Fe3O4). The Au@Pt-ssDNA-CBZ biosensor was designed for qualitative analysis through a naked-eye visualization strategy in the presence of CBZ. Meanwhile, Au@Pt-dsDNA-Fe3O4 biosensor was developed to quantitatively analyze CBZ using a multifunctional microplate reader. A competitive assay based on the dual-mode Au@Pt-DNA biosensors was established for onsite sensitive determination of CBZ. The limit of detection (LOD) and recoveries of the developed assay were 0.038 ng/mg and 71.88-110.11%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging between 3.15 and 10.91%. The assay demonstrated a good correlation with data acquired from liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry analysis. In summary, the proposed competitive assay based on dual-mode Au@Pt-DNA biosensors might have a great potential for onsite sensitive detection of pesticides in agro-products.

The demand for Chinese chives is growing as they are also rich in vitamins, fiber, and sulfur nutrients. Chinese chives should be sprayed with imidacloprid to control pests and diseases to safeguard their yield and to meet the demands of East Asian consumers for Chinese chives. Overspraying of imidacloprid can lead to residues in Chinese chives, posing a severe risk to human health. To reduce the harmful effects of imidacloprid residues on humans, we investigated the imidacloprid dissipation pattern and the final residue on Chinese chives using the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Good linearity (R2= 0.9988), accuracy (expressed as recovery % of 78.34–91.17%), precision [expressed as relative SDs (RSDs) of 0.48–6.43%], and sensitivity [a limit of quantification (LOQ) ≤ 8.07 × 104 mg/kg] were achieved. The dissipation dynamics were consistent with the first-order kinetics, with a half-life of 2.92 days. The final residual levels on Chinese chives were 0.00923–0.166 mg/kg, which is lower than the maximum residue limits (MRLs) of 1 mg/kg for imidacloprid on Chinese chives. A risk assessment index of

Imidacloprid is one of the most commonly used insecticides for managing pests, thus, improving the quality and yield of vegetables. The abuse/misuse of imidacloprid contaminates the environment and threatens human health. To reduce the risk, a colorimetric enzyme-linked immunoassay assay (Co-ELISA) and chemiluminescence enzyme-linked immunoassay assay (Cl-ELISA) were established to detect imidacloprid residues in vegetables. The linear range of Co-ELISA ranged between 1.56 μg/L and 200 μg/L with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.56 μg/L. The values for Cl-ELISA were 0.19 μg/L to 25 μg/L with an LOD of 0.19 μg/L, which are lower than those of Co-ELISA. Fortifying Chinese cabbage, cucumber, and zucchini with imidacloprid at 10, 50, and 100 μg/L yielded recoveries between 81.7 and 117.6% for Co-ELISA and at 5, 10, and 20 µg/L yielded recoveries range from 69.7 to 120.6% for Cl-ELISA. These results indicate that Cl-ELISA has a high sensitivity and a rapid detection time, saving cost (antigen and antibody concentrations) and serving as a more efficient model for the rapid detection of imidacloprid residue.

In this study, a novel composite material prepared by using deep eutectic solvent (tetrabutylammonium chloride-dodecanol, DES5) functionalized magnetic MWCNTs−ZIF−8 (MM/ZIF−8@DES5) was employed as an adsorbent for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of six pyrethroids from tea drinks. The characterization results show that MM/ZIF−8@DES5 possessed sufficient specific surface area and superparamagnetism, which could facilitate the rapid enrichment of pyrethroids from tea drink samples. The results of the optimization experiment indicated that DES5, which comprised tetrabutylammonium chloride and 1-dodecanol, was selected for the next experiment and that the adsorption properties of MM/ZIF−8@DES5 were higher than those of MM/ZIF−8 and M-MWCNTs. The validation results show that the method has a wide linear range (0.5–400 μg L−1, R2 ≥ 0.9905), low LOD (0.08–0.33 μg L−1), and good precision (intra-day RSD ≤ 5.6%, inter-day RSD ≤ 8.6%). The method was successfully applied to the determination of pyrethroids in three tea drink samples.

Abstract The earth's hydroclimate is continuing to change, and the corresponding impacts on water resource space‐time distribution need to be understood to mitigate their socioeconomic consequences. A variety of ecosystem services, transport processes, and human activities are synced with the timing of peak annual runoff. To understand the influence of changing hydroclimate on peak runoff dates across the continental United States, we downscaled outputs of 10 Global Circulation Models for different future scenarios. Our results quantify robust spatial patterns of both negative (up to 3–5 weeks) and positive (up to 2–4 weeks) shifts in the dates of peak annual runoff occurrence by the end of this century. In snowmelt‐dominated areas, annual maxima are projected to shift to earlier dates due to the corresponding changes in snow accumulation timing. For regions in which the occurrence of springtime extreme soil wetness shifts to later time, we find that peak annual runoff is also projected to be delayed. These patterns of runoff timing change tend to be more pronounced for projections of higher greenhouse concentration in the future.

Drug residues, organic dyes, heavy metals, and other chemical pollutants not only cause environmental pollution, but also have a serious impact on food safety. Timely and systematic summary of the latest scientific advances is of great importance for the development of new detection technologies. In particular, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) can mimic antibodies, enzymes and other biological molecules to recognize, enrich, and separate contaminants, with specific recognition, selective adsorption, high affinity, and strong resistance characteristics. Therefore, MIPs have been widely used in chemical analysis, sensing, and material adsorption. In this review, we first describe the basic principles and production processes of molecularly imprinted polymers. Secondly, an overview of recent applications of molecularly imprinted polymers in sample pre-treatment, sensors, chromatographic separation, and mimetic enzymes is highlighted. Finally, a brief assessment of current technical issues and future trends in molecularly imprinted polymers is also presented.

As a generalization of intuitionistic fuzzy sets, single-valued neutrosophic sets have certain advantages for solving indeterminate and inconsistent information. In this paper, we study the fuzzy inference full implication method based on a single-valued neutrosophic t-representable t-norm. Firstly, single-valued neutrosophic fuzzy inference triple I principles for fuzzy modus ponens and fuzzy modus tollens are shown. Then, single-valued neutrosophic ℛ-type triple I solutions for fuzzy modus ponens and fuzzy modus tollens are given. Finally, the robustness of the full implication of the triple I method based on a left-continuous single-valued neutrosophic t-representable t-norm is investigated. As a special case in the main results, the sensitivities of full implication triple I solutions, based on three special single-valued neutrosophic t-representable t-norms, are given.

Background/Aims: Ligustrazine (LSZ) has been identified as an antitumor agent against some types of cancers. Nevertheless, its ability to inhibit growth, migration and invasion of medulloblastoma cells is still unclear. This study aimed to explore the effect of LSZ on Daoy cells. Methods: The effects of LSZ on viability, proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion of Daoy cells were analyzed by CCK-8, BrdU, flow cytometry and Transwell assays, respectively. The effect of LSZ on miR-211 expression was analyzed by qRT-PCR. miR-211 inhibitor transfection was performed to suppress miR-211 expression. The effects of LSZ on apoptosis-related factors, MMP-2, MMP-9, and Vimentin (Vim), as well as main factors of PI3K/AKT and mTOR pathways were analyzed by Western blot. Results: LSZ inhibited viability but promoted apoptosis of Daoy cells. Additionally, the proliferative, migratory and invasive abilities of Daoy cells were decreased by LSZ. Meanwhile, LSZ promoted the activations of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9, increased Bax level, decreased Bcl-2 level, as well as inhibited the expressions of MMP-2, MMP-9 and Vim. Additionally, we found that LSZ enhanced miR-211 expression and exerted its anti-medulloblastoma effect by up-regulation of miR-211. Furthermore, LSZ inhibited PI3K/AKT and mTOR signaling pathways by up-regulating miR-211. Conclusion: LSZ suppressed medulloblastoma Daoy cells by up-regulating miR-211 and further modulating the activations of PI3K/AKT and mTOR signaling pathways.

Yellow sarson (Brassica rapa ssp. trillocularis) is an important rapeseed-mustard species of Brassica rapa due to its high seed oil content. Glycerolipids and fatty acid composition affect seed germination and determine the quality of seed oil. To date, no information is available on the composition of individual glycerolipids in this species. Therefore, in this study the glycerolipid profiling of yellow sarson seeds was performed using ultra high performance liquid chromatography coupled to triple time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Triple-TOF-MS). A fast and efficient chromatographic separation of glycerolipids was accomplished based on an UPLCTM BEH C8 column within 22 min. In ESI positive ion mode, TOF-MS scan-information dependent acquisition-product ion scan was carried out to acquire both high resolution MS and MS/MS information from one injection. According to MS/MS spectra, predominant fragmentation patterns of glycerolipids were elucidated in detail. Based on retention time, accurate mass, isotopic distribution, and fragmentation patterns, the composition of 144 glycerolipids and fatty acids were finally identified in yellow sarson seeds, including 77 triacylglycerols, 32 diacylglycerols, 18 sulfoquinovosyl-diacylglycerols, 5 monogalactosyl-diaclyglycerols, and 12 digalactosyl-diacylglycerols. Of them, the most abundant glycerolipids in yellow sarson seeds were triacylglycerols, the major storage form of seed oil in plants. In addition, diacylglycerols were found as a minor component of glycerolipids. The lowest amounts of glycerolipids detected in seeds were glycosyl-acylglycerols. The results revealed the composition and relative content of glycerolipids in yellow sarson seeds, which will provide a more comprehensive assessment of the quality of seed oil and also help to select functional cultivars with higher beneficial glycerolipids. This profiling method has the advantages of high throughput, high sensitivity and good accuracy, which will provide a reliable analysis platform for glycerolipids metabolism in plants.

Background/Aims: The transcription factor CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α (C/EBPα) is a basic leucine zipper transcription factor that plays essential roles in tumor progression. Although decreased or absent C/EBPα expression in many cancers suggests a possible role for C/EBPα as a tumor suppressor, the functions of C/EBPα in lung adenocarcinoma remain unclear. Methods: Here, C/EBPα expression levels in 26 lung adenocarcinoma and para-carcinoma tissue samples were detected by qRT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Cell transwell assays, wound healing assay and three-dimensional spheroid invasion assay were performed to assess the effects of C/EBPα on migration and invasion in lung adenocarcinoma cells in vitro. Western blotting was applied to analyze the potential mechanisms. Results: C/EBPα was found to be decreased in lung adenocarcinoma tissues compared to para-carcinoma tissues. Overexpression of C/EBPα significantly inhibited the migration and invasion of lung adenocarcinoma cells. In addition, C/EBPα overexpression suppressed the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) that was characterized by a gain of epithelial and loss of mesenchymal markers. Further study showed that C/EBPα suppressed the transcription of β-catenin and downregulated the levels of its downstream targets. Conclusion: Our data suggest that C/EBPα inhibits lung adenocarcinoma cell invasion and migration by suppressing β-catenin-mediated EMT in vitro. Thus, C/EBPα may be helpful as a potential target for treatment of lung adenocarcinoma.

The present study investigated the effect of dietary astaxanthin (AX) on the growth performance, antioxidant parameters, and repair of hepatopancreas damage in Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). To evaluate the hepatopancreas protective function of AX in shrimps, we compared the effect of five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets under oxidized fish oil conditions with varying AX levels during the 50-day experimental period. The formulated diets were as follows: (i) OFO (oxidized fish oil); (ii) OFO/AX150 (oxidized fish oil + AX150 mg/kg); (iii) OFO/AX250 (oxidized fish oil + AX250 mg/kg); (iv) OFO/AX450 (oxidized fish oil + AX450 mg/kg); and, (v) control group (fresh fish oil). Results showed that the oxidized fish oil with 275.2 meq/kg peroxide value (POV) resulted in a substantial decrease in the final body weight of L. vannamei (P > 0.05) and induced some visible histopathological alterations in the hepatopancreas. Growth performance was significantly higher in shrimps fed with the OFO/AX450 diet than those fed with the OFO diet (p < 0.05). However, no significant difference was observed when the OFO/AX450 diet was compared to the control diet containing fresh fish oil (p > 0.05). Moreover, shrimps under the OFO/AX450 diet displayed a significant improvement in hepatopancreatic health and showed a reduction of malondialdehyde (MDA) compared to those under the OFO diet (p < 0.05). Dietary AX improved the antioxidant capacity of L. vannamei by increasing the catalase (CAT) activity in the hemolymph. Acute salinity change test showed a higher shrimp survival rate under OFO/AX450 diet than the OFO diet (p < 0.05), suggesting that AX can contribute to enhanced stress tolerance. In conclusion, our data suggest that AX confers dose-dependent protection against OFO-induced oxidative insults and hepatopancreatic damage in shrimp.

A simple, sensitive and effective magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) technique was developed for the extraction of pyrethroid pesticides from environmental water samples, followed by gas chromatography tandem triple quadrupole mass spectrometry determination. An adsorbent of magnetic zeolitic imidazolate framework-8@deep eutectic solvent (M-ZIF-8@DES) was prepared using deep eutectic solvent coated on the surface of M-ZIF-8. The features of M-ZIF-8@DES were confirmed by material characterizations, and the results indicated that M-ZIF-8@DES has a good magnetism (61.3 emu g−1), a decent surface area (96.83 m2 g−1) and pore volume (0.292 mL g−1). Single factor experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of different conditions on the performance of MSPE. Under the optimal conditions, the developed method performs good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9916) in the concentration range of 1−500 μg L−1. The limits of detection were in the range of 0.05−0.21 μg L−1 (signal/noise = 3/1). The intraday relative standard deviation (RSD) and interday RSD were less than 9.40%. Finally, the proposed technique was applied for the determination of pyrethroid pesticides in environmental water samples. This work shows the potential of DES-modified metal-organic frameworks for different sample pretreatment techniques.

As persistent organic pollutants, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) and their metabolites pose considerable risks to human health and the environment. Therefore, monitoring DDTs in the environment is essential. Here, we developed a green, simple, and effective magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method coupled with gas chromatography tandem triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry to determine the DDT content of environmental water samples. A magnetic ionic liquid (IL) adsorbent was developed based on a modified magnetic multiwalled carbon nanotube/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (MM/ZIF-8/IL), synthesized by immobilizing the IL on the surface of MM/ZIF-8. We confirmed successful synthesis of MM/ZIF-8/IL by material characterization, and our results suggested that the MM/ZIF-8/IL had a high Brunauer−Emmett−Teller surface area (159.9 m2 g−1), good thermostability (−1). Several experimental conditions affecting the MSPE efficiency were optimized. Under the best conditions, good detection linearity was achieved (0.5−500 µg L−1) with determination coefficients ranging from 0.9927 to 0.9971. The lower limits of detection (0.0016−0.0072 µg L−1) also had good precision, having an intraday relative standard deviation (RSD) ≤ 6.5% and an interday RSD ≤ 8.9%. Finally, we used the as-developed method to determine DDT levels in environmental water samples.

Molecular imprinting technology (MIT), also known as molecular template technology, is a new technology involving material chemistry, polymer chemistry, biochemistry, and other multi-disciplinary approaches. This technology is used to realize the unique recognition ability of three-dimensional crosslinked polymers, called the molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). MIPs demonstrate a wide range of applicability, good plasticity, stability, and high selectivity, and their internal recognition sites can be selectively combined with template molecules to achieve selective recognition. A molecularly imprinted fluorescence sensor (MIFs) incorporates fluorescent materials (fluorescein or fluorescent nanoparticles) into a molecularly imprinted polymer synthesis system and transforms the binding sites between target molecules and molecularly imprinted materials into readable fluorescence signals. This sensor demonstrates the advantages of high sensitivity and selectivity of fluorescence detection. Molecularly imprinted materials demonstrate considerable research significance and broad application prospects. They are a research hotspot in the field of food and environment safety sensing analysis. In this study, the progress in the construction and application of MIFs was reviewed with emphasis on the preparation principle, detection methods, and molecular recognition mechanism. The applications of MIFs in food and environment safety detection in recent years were summarized, and the research trends and development prospects of MIFs were discussed.

Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans (FOC) is a destructive disease of Brassica crops, which results in severe yield losses. There is little information available about the mechanism of disease resistance. To obtain an overview of the transcriptome profiles in roots of R4P1, a Brassica oleracea variety that is highly resistant to fusarium wilt, we compared the transcriptomes of samples inoculated with FOC and samples inoculated with distilled water. RNA-seq analysis generated more than 136 million 100-bp clean reads, which were assembled into 62,506 unigenes (mean size = 741 bp). Among them, 49,959 (79.92%) genes were identified based on sequence similarity searches, including SwissProt (29,050, 46.47%), Gene Ontology (GO) (33,767, 54.02%), Clusters of Orthologous Groups (KOG) (14,721, 23.55%) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes Pathway database (KEGG) (12,974, 20.76%) searches; digital gene expression analysis revealed 885 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between infected and control samples at 4, 12, 24 and 48 hours after inoculation. The DEGs were assigned to 31 KEGG pathways. Early defense systems, including the MAPK signaling pathway, calcium signaling and salicylic acid-mediated hypersensitive response (SA-mediated HR) were activated after pathogen infection. SA-dependent systemic acquired resistance (SAR), ethylene (ET)- and jasmonic (JA)-mediated pathways and the lignin biosynthesis pathway play important roles in plant resistance. We also analyzed the expression of defense-related genes, such as genes encoding pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins, UDP-glycosyltransferase (UDPG), pleiotropic drug resistance, ATP-binding cassette transporters (PDR-ABC transporters), myrosinase, transcription factors and kinases, which were differentially expressed. The results of this study may contribute to efforts to identify and clone candidate genes associated with disease resistance and to uncover the molecular mechanism underlying FOC resistance in cabbage.

Due to their unique optical properties, narrow size distributions, and good biological affinity, gold nanoparticles have been widely applied in sensing analysis, catalytic, environmental monitoring, and disease therapy. The color of a gold nanoparticle solution and its maximum characteristic absorption wavelength will change with the particle size and inter-particle spacing. These properties are often used in the detection of hazardous chemicals, such as pesticide residues, heavy metals, banned additives, and biotoxins, in food. Because the gold nanoparticles-colorimetric sensing strategy is simple, quick, and sensitive, this method has extensive applications in real-time on-site monitoring and rapid testing of food quality and safety. Herein, we review the preparation methods, functional modification, photochemical properties, and applications of gold nanoparticle sensors in rapid testing. In addition, we elaborate on the colorimetric sensing mechanisms. Finally, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of colorimetric sensors based on gold nanoparticles, and directions for future development.

Monitoring of low levels of chlorsulfuron in environmental water samples is important. Although several detection methods have been developed, they all have some drawbacks, such as being time-consuming, requiring expensive instruments and experienced operators, and consuming large volumes of organic solvents. There is an urgent need for a simple, rapid, and inexpensive detection method for chlorsulfuron. Herein, such a method was developed using anti-aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in the presence of acetamiprid in agricultural irrigation water samples. Aggregation of the AuNPs was induced by acetamiprid, and this produced a distinct color change from Bordeaux red to blue. However, the strong hydrogen bonding interaction between chlorsulfuron and acetamiprid could inhibit AuNP aggregation. The effect of chlorsulfuron on the anti-agglomeration behavior of AuNPs was monitored by ultraviolet–visiblespectroscopy (UV-Vis) and the naked eye over a concentration range 0.1–100 mg/L. The detection limit for chlorsulfuron was 0.025 mg/L (signal-to-noise ratio of three). This colorimetric method was successfully applied to the determination of chlorsulfuron in spiked tap water and agricultural irrigation water with satisfactory recoveries (76.3%–94.2%).

Magnetic solid-phase extraction is an effective and convenient sample pretreatment technique that has received considerable interest in recent years. A lot of research indicated that magnetic nanocarbon-material-based composites have good application prospects as adsorbents for magnetic solid-phase extraction of pesticides. Herein, a novel zeolitic imidazolate framework based on magnetic multiwalled carbon nanotubes (M-M-ZIF-67) has been prepared as an adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction of nine organochlorine pesticides from agricultural irrigation water samples. The obtained M-M-ZIF-67 material possessed porous surfaces and super-paramagnetism due to the utilization of magnetic multiwalled carbon nanotubes as the magnetic kernel and support. To evaluate the extraction performance of the M-M-ZIF-67, the main parameters that affected the extraction efficiency were researched. Under the optimal conditions, a good linearity for the nine organochlorine pesticides was achieved with the determination coefficients (R2) higher than 0.9916. The limits of detection (signal/noise = 3:1) were in the range 0.07–1.03 µg L−1. The recoveries of all analytes for the method at spiked levels of 10 and 100 µg L−1 were 74.9–116.3% and 75.1–112.7%, respectively. The developed M-M-ZIF-67 based magnetic solid-phase extraction method has a potential application prospect for the monitoring of trace level of organochlorine pesticides in environmental water samples.

Various highly sensitive and selective analytical methods have been used to monitor metsulfuron-methyl residue in the environment. However, these methods involve costly instruments and complex, time-consuming operations performed in laboratories. Here, a rapid, convenient, and sensitive colorimetric sensor based on anti-aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) is demonstrated for the rapid detection of metsulfuron-methyl in agricultural irrigation water. The AuNPs could be induced to aggregate in the presence of melamine and exhibited a distinct color change from wine-red to blue. The aggregation was suppressed by a strong hydrogen-bonding interaction between metsulfuron-methyl and melamine. The differences of the absorbance at 523 nm (ΔA523) and the color change was linearly related to metsulfuron-methyl concentration over the range 0.1–100 mg/L, as observed visually and by UV-vis (Ultraviolet-visible) spectrometry. The detection limit of the sensor was as low as 0.05 mg/L (signal/noise = 3), and was used to determine metsulfuron-methyl in spiked water and in agricultural irrigation water samples. Recoveries were in the range of 71.2–100.4%, suggesting that the colorimetric sensor was suitable for the determination of metsulfuron-methyl in agricultural water samples.

We present a directly competitive fluorescence assay for highly sensitive detection of melamine in milk using magnetic dummy molecularly imprinted polymers (MDMIPs). The detection principle is based on competitive binding between the fluorescent label and melamine on the MDMIPs. The fluorescent label was obtained by combining fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) with melamine in ethanol and water. MDMIPs were prepared on the surface of Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles using 2,4-diamino-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine as dummy template. The MDMIPs were characterized and their adsorption capacity was evaluated based on their static adsorption and Scatchard analysis. Results suggest that MDMIPs were successfully coated on the Fe3O4@SiO2 surface and had a core–shell structure. Adsorption experiments suggested that the MDMIPs had higher specific recognition capacities for melamine and FITC–melamine (FITC-Mel) than did magnetic dummy molecularly non-imprinted polymers. Competitive binding between FITC-Mel and melamine was performed under the optimum conditions to determine melamine quantitatively. The linear range of this fluorescence assay was 0.1–20 mg/L for melamine detection. The detection limit was 0.05 mg/L in negative milk samples. The assay was also successfully employed to detect melamine in spiked milk samples, with satisfactory recoveries, i.e., between 70.2% and 92.7%.
