Acute exposure to high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) leads to sudden death and, if survived, lingering neurological disorders. Clinical signs include seizures, loss of consciousness, and dyspnea. The proximate mechanisms underlying H2S-induced acute toxicity and death have not been clearly elucidated. We investigated electrocerebral, cardiac, and respiratory activity during H2S exposure using electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocardiogram, and plethysmography. H2S suppressed electrocerebral activity and disrupted breathing. Cardiac activity was comparatively less affected. To test whether Ca2+ dysregulation contributes to H2S-induced EEG suppression, we developed an in vitro real-time rapid throughput assay measuring patterns of spontaneous synchronized Ca2+ oscillations in cultured primary cortical neuronal networks loaded with the indicator Fluo-4 using the fluorescent imaging plate reader (FLIPR-Tetra®). Sulfide >5 ppm dysregulated synchronous calcium oscillation (SCO) patterns in a dose-dependent manner. Inhibitors of NMDA and AMPA receptors magnified H2S-induced SCO suppression. Inhibitors of L-type voltage-gated Ca2+ channels and transient receptor potential (TRP) channels prevented H2S-induced SCO suppression. Inhibitors of T-type voltage-gated Ca2+ channels, ryanodine receptors, and sodium channels had no measurable influence on H2S-induced SCO suppression. Exposures to >5 ppm sulfide also suppressed neuronal electrical activity in primary cortical neurons measured by multielectrode array (MEA), an effect alleviated by pretreatment with the nonselective TRP channel inhibitor, 2-aminoethoxydiphenylborate (2-APB). 2-APB also reduced primary cortical neuronal cell death from sulfide exposure. These results improve our understanding of the role of different Ca2+ channels in acute H2S-induced neurotoxicity and identify TRP channel modulators as novel structures with potential therapeutic benefits.

Study Design: A prospective study.Purpose: To obtain the results of four body image questionnaires analyzed for validity in Korean and compare them to radiographic findings and quality of life scores.Overview of Literature: Each of the four body image questionnaires has been studied, but comparative studies of each other are rare.Methods: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients ages 10 to 19 years completed the Korean version of the Quality of Life Profile for Spinal Deformities (K-QLPSD), the Scoliosis Research Society-22 self-image subscale (K-SRS-22-si), Korean version of the Spinal Appearance Questionnaire (K-SAQ), Korean version of the Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire-Scoliosis (K-BIDQ-S), and Korean version of the Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (K-ISYQOL). Four body image questionnaires were compared with K-ISYQOL and radiographic major curve magnitude, coronal balance, and sagittal balance. Spearman’s correlation was performed to compare the four body image questionnaires.Results: The study included 84 AIS patients, with a mean age of 12.6 years and a major Cobb angle of 29.4°. The four surveys were correlated with major curve magnitude and K-ISYQOL. K-SAQ and K-BIDQ-S were correlated better than K-QLPSD, and K-SRS-22-si was correlated with K-ISYQOL. The four surveys were moderately correlated with major curve magnitude, but there was no correlation with age, coronal balance, and sagittal balance.Conclusions: K-SAQ and K-BIDQ-S correlate better with K-ISYQOL than K-QLPSD and K-SRS-22-si.

Record power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been obtained with the organic hole transporter 2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis( N , N -di- p -methoxyphenyl-amine)9,9′-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD). Conventional doping of spiro-OMeTAD with hygroscopic lithium salts and volatile 4- tert -butylpyridine is a time-consuming process and also leads to poor device stability. We developed a new doping strategy for spiro-OMeTAD that avoids post-oxidation by using stable organic radicals as the dopant and ionic salts as the doping modulator (referred to as ion-modulated radical doping). We achieved PCEs of >25% and much-improved device stability under harsh conditions. The radicals provide hole polarons that instantly increase the conductivity and work function (WF), and ionic salts further modulate the WF by affecting the energetics of the hole polarons. This organic semiconductor doping strategy, which decouples conductivity and WF tunability, could inspire further optimization in other optoelectronic devices.

Improvements to perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have focused on increasing their power conversion efficiency (PCE) and operational stability and maintaining high performance upon scale-up to module sizes. We report that replacing the commonly used mesoporous–titanium dioxide electron transport layer (ETL) with a thin layer of polyacrylic acid–stabilized tin(IV) oxide quantum dots (paa-QD-SnO 2 ) on the compact–titanium dioxide enhanced light capture and largely suppressed nonradiative recombination at the ETL–perovskite interface. The use of paa-QD-SnO 2 as electron-selective contact enabled PSCs (0.08 square centimeters) with a PCE of 25.7% (certified 25.4%) and high operational stability and facilitated the scale-up of the PSCs to larger areas. PCEs of 23.3, 21.7, and 20.6% were achieved for PSCs with active areas of 1, 20, and 64 square centimeters, respectively.

A genetic etiology of male infertility is identified in fewer than 25% of infertile men, while 30% of infertile men lack a clear etiology, resulting in a diagnosis of idiopathic male infertility. Advances in reproductive genetics have provided insights into the mechanisms of male infertility, and a characterization of the genetic basis of male infertility may have broad implications for understanding the causes of infertility and determining the prognosis, optimal treatment, and management of couples. In a substantial proportion of patients with azoospermia, known genetic factors contribute to male infertility. Additionally, the number of identified genetic anomalies in other etiologies of male infertility is growing through advances in whole-genome amplification and next-generation sequencing. In this review, we present an up-to-date overview of the indications for appropriate genetic tests, summarize the characteristics of chromosomal and genetic diseases, and discuss the treatment of couples with genetic infertility by microdissection-testicular sperm extraction, personalized hormone therapy, and in vitro fertilization with pre-implantation genetic testing.

This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of endoscopic spinal surgery (ESS) and minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) for degenerative lumbar disease (DLD) through meta-analysis. The Medline (via PubMed), Cochrane, Scopus, and Embase databases were searched for studies that evaluated the outcomes of ESS and MIS-TLIF in DLD, including visual analog scale (VAS) score for low back pain, VAS score for leg pain, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and complications published between January 2000 and August 2020. Two authors extracted the data independently. Any discrepancies were resolved by a consensus. Four comparative studies were identified. No significant differences were found between the ESS and MIS-TLIF groups in terms of VAS score for back pain, VAS score for leg pain, and ODI, except for complication rate. The complication rate was higher in the ESS than in the MIS-TLIF group. A literature review identified four comparative studies reporting the clinical outcomes of ESS and MIS-TLIF for DLD. Despite the heterogeneity, a limited number of meta-analyses showed that the clinical outcomes between the two groups were not significantly different except for complication rate. Hence, further large-scale multicenter studies are required to validate our results.

Purpose Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors are effective treatments for erectile dysfunction, and several recent studies have reported positive effects of PDE5 inhibitors on semen parameters as well. However, the data are still controversial. We investigated the effect of PDE5 inhibitors on sperm function by analyzing sperm motility and acrosome reaction. Materials and methods This study included young healthy men who underwent fertility evaluation; 32 cases were finally included. Men were excluded if they used a PDE5 inhibitor within 2 weeks or if they had insufficient semen volume (≤2 mL), leukocytospermia, or a genitourinary infection. Changes in sperm motility and acrosome reaction were determined after in vitro exposure to the maximal semen concentration of oral intake of sildenafil (100 mg) or tadalafil (20 mg). Results Mean age of the participants was 35.4±4.9 years, mean sperm concentration was 68.7±32.4 ×10⁶/mL, and mean sperm motility was 50.38%±8.41%. All three groups (control, sildenafil, tadalafil) experienced trends of decreased average sperm motility over time, but these changes were not significant. There were no significant differences between the three groups in the acrosome reaction after 120 minutes of drug exposure, either. The maximal semen concentration of oral intake of sildenafil (100 mg) or tadalafil (20 mg) did not substantially affect sperm motility or acrosome reaction. Conclusions Our results suggest that on-demand use of a PDE5 inhibitor is safe and useful for the male partner of an infertile couple; however, further studies are warranted for daily PDE5 inhibitor use.

Metal halide perovskites of the general formula ABX3—where A is a monovalent cation such as caesium, methylammonium or formamidinium; B is divalent lead, tin or germanium; and X is a halide anion—have shown great potential as light harvesters for thin-film photovoltaics1–5. Among a large number of compositions investigated, the cubic α-phase of formamidinium lead triiodide (FAPbI3) has emerged as the most promising semiconductor for highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells6–9, and maximizing the performance of this material in such devices is of vital importance for the perovskite research community. Here we introduce an anion engineering concept that uses the pseudo-halide anion formate (HCOO−) to suppress anion-vacancy defects that are present at grain boundaries and at the surface of the perovskite films and to augment the crystallinity of the films. The resulting solar cell devices attain a power conversion efficiency of 25.6 per cent (certified 25.2 per cent), have long-term operational stability (450 hours) and show intense electroluminescence with external quantum efficiencies of more than 10 per cent. Our findings provide a direct route to eliminate the most abundant and deleterious lattice defects present in metal halide perovskites, providing a facile access to solution-processable films with improved optoelectronic performance. Incorporation of the pseudo-halide anion formate during the fabrication of α-FAPbI3 perovskite films eliminates deleterious iodide vacancies, yielding solar cell devices with a certified power conversion efficiency of 25.21 per cent and long-term operational stability.

Summary The charge transferability of the electron transfer layers (ETLs) is important for achieving high performance in mesoscopic (mp) perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, because of the low electron extraction efficiency of TiO2, lithium doping is essentially required. In this work, we compared the electrical properties of mp-TiO2 doped with Li-salts with different anions—LiTFSI, Li2CO3, LiCl, and LiF. Interestingly, we found that the anions of the Li-salt dopants affect the electrical properties of the ETLs and the solar cell performance. The Li2CO3 doping of mp-TiO2 led to conduction bands deeper than those of pristine mp-TiO2 or other doped mp-TiO2. The maximum efficiency of 25.28% and certified efficiency of 24.68% (Newport) was obtained by using Li2CO3 dopant. This optimization of the ETLs properties is expected to greatly contribute to the progress of PSCs by leading to further increases in their efficiency.

Objectives This study aimed to compare the demographic characteristics, disease activity, functional status, and quality of life between patients with axial spondyloarthritis and fibromyalgia and patients with axial spondyloarthritis without fibromyalgia. Methods We searched MEDLINE via PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, and Embase databases, from the earliest available indexing date to March 30, 2019, for comparative studies evaluating fibromyalgia in patients with axial spondyloarthritis. Two authors extracted data independently, and all discrepancies were resolved through consensus. Results Seven comparative studies were identified. No statistically significant differences were observed in terms of age, levels of inflammatory markers, and prevalence of extra-articular manifestations such as uveitis, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease between patients with Axial spondyloarthritis fibromyalgia and those without it. Sex ratios (female to male) were approximately 3:2 and 1:3 in patients with and without fibromyalgia, respectively. The ratios concerning human leukocyte antigen B27-positive patients with and without fibromyalgia were 45.1% and 65.6%, respectively. Patients with fibromyalgia had significantly higher Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index, Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index, and Ankylosing Spondylitis Quality of Life scores. Conclusions Our meta-analysis showed that patients with Axial spondyloarthritis fibromyalgia had considerably higher pain severity, disease activity, and worse quality of life than patients without fibromyalgia. The sex ratios (female to male) were approximately 3:2 and 1:3, and ratios for human leukocyte antigen B27-positive patients were 45.1% and 65.6% in patients with and without fibromyalgia, respectively. Further well-designed studies are needed to substantiate our results.

This study aimed to compare the results of gait analysis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients and healthy subjects through a meta-analysis of the existing research. The Medline (via PubMed), Cochrane, Scopus, and Embase databases were searched for studies that evaluated the findings of AIS, including spatiotemporal parameters (walking speed, step length, cadence, and stance phase duration), segmental kinematics (frontal, sagittal, and transverse pelvic motion), and electromyographic variables (electrical activity of the quadratus lumborum, erector spinae, and gluteus medius), and were published between January 2000 and May 2020. Two authors extracted the data independently, and any discrepancies regarding the eligibility of retrieved studies were resolved by a consensus. Six comparative studies were identified and subsequently analyzed. It was found that the stance phase and frontal pelvic motion were significantly reduced in AIS patients compared with healthy controls. No significant difference was observed for speed, step length, cadence, sagittal pelvic motion, and transverse pelvic motion. The electrical activity durations of the quadratus lumborum, erector spinae, and gluteus medius were significantly increased in the AIS group compared with healthy subjects. Despite the heterogeneity, a limited number of meta-analyses showed reduced stance phase and frontal pelvic motion with prolonged activation timing of the quadratus lumborum, erector spinae, and gluteus medius muscles. Hence, further large-scale, multicenter studies are required to validate our results.

Significant aggregation between ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) dispersed in polar and nonpolar solvents hinders the formation of high quality thin film for the device application and impedes their excellent electron transporting ability. Herein a bifunctional coordination complex, titanium diisopropoxide bis(acetylacetonate) (Ti(acac)2) is employed as efficient stabilizer to improve colloidal stability of ZnO NPs. Acetylacetonate functionalized ZnO exhibited long-term stability and maintained its superior optical and electrical properties for months aging under ambient atmospheric condition. The functionalized ZnO NPs were then incorporated into polymer solar cells with conventional structure as n-type buffer layer. The devices exhibited nearly identical power conversion efficiency regardless of the use of fresh and old (2 months aged) NPs. Our approach provides a simple and efficient route to boost colloidal stability of ZnO NPs in both polar and nonpolar solvents, which could enable structure-independent intense studies for efficient organic and hybrid optoelectronic devices.

Operating in wet conditions The high efficiency of the complex organic molecule Spiro-OMeTAD as a hole-transporting material for perovskite solar cells requires the use of hygroscopic dopants that decrease stability. Jeong et al. synthesized hydrophobic fluorinated analogs of Spiro-OMeTAD as hole-transporting materials that have favorable shifting of the electronic state for hole extraction and used them to fabricate perovskite solar cells. A champion device had a certified power conversion efficiency of 24.8% and an open-circuit voltage near the Shockley-Queisser limit. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between neck pain and radiological findings in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients. METHODS The study groups comprised 257 AS and 50 normal patients. Of the AS patients, 91 had axial neck pain (group 1) and 166 did not (group 2). Full-length radiographs of the spine in the anteroposterior and lateral planes were taken. Radiographic parameters such as the chin brow vertical angle (CBVA), McGregor slope (McGS), slope of the Line of Sight (SLS), C2 slope, C2-C7 lordosis (CL), C2-C7 sagittal vertical axis (C2-C7 SVA), and T1 slope were measured. Statistical analysis was performed. RESULTS The AS and normal patients were found to have significantly different CBVA, McGS, C2 slope, C2-C7 SVA, and T1 slope. However, no significant difference was observed for SLS and CL. Between groups 1 and 2, there were significant differences in the McGS, CL, and T1 slope. However, no significant difference between these two groups was observed for CBVA, SLS, C2 slope, and C2-C7 SVA. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify statistically significant predictors of neck pain in AS patients and it revealed that the T1 slope and McGS were two such predictors. The T1 slope showed superior discriminatory power to McGS and CL in the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that a high T1 slope and McGS are independent radiological predictors of neck pain in AS. Further well-designed studies would be necessary to substantiate our results.

Inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) have intensively drawn attention as efficient light-emitting materials for optoelectronic applications due to their fine optoelectronic properties with a high photoluminescence quantum yield and easily tunable saturated emission color. However, the poor stability of the red-emitting PeNCs has become an obstacle because of the uncontrollable iodine substitution from the PeNCs due to weak Pb-I bonding. In this work, we have demonstrated a ligand-mediated post-treatment (LMPT) method using a halide ion-pair ligand, tridodecylmethyl ammonium iodide (TrDAI), for the air stable and high-quality red-emitting PeNCs. Through the LMPT method, the optoelectronic properties of red-emitting PeNCs are dramatically improved resulting in a PLQY of 88.7% at 637 ± 2 nm emission with an increased carrier lifetime from 20.77 to 31.52 ns. We achieve highly efficient red perovskite light-emitting diodes exhibiting a maximum current efficiency of 7.69 cd A-1 and an external quantum efficiency of 6.36% at 637 ± 2 nm electroluminescence emission with a sharp full-width at half maximum of 31 nm.

The performance of solar cells is determined by three factors: the open-circuit voltage (VOC), short-circuit current density (JSC), and fill factor (FF). The VOC and FF are determined by the material bandgap and the series/shunt resistance, respectively. However, JSC is determined by the amount of incident light in addition to the bandgap of the material. In this study, a moth-eye pattern was formed on a glass surface via direct printing to increase the amount of incident light and thus increase JSC. The moth-eye pattern is a typical antireflection pattern that reduces the reflection by gradually increasing the refractive index. A flat perovskite solar cell (F-PSC) and a moth-eye patterned perovskite solar cell (M-PSC) had JSC values of 23.70 and 25.50 mA/cm2, respectively. The power-conversion efficiencies of the F-PSC and M-PSC were 19.81% and 21.77%, respectively.

There have been ongoing social discussions on revision of the abortion law since the Constitutional Court ruled it nonconformity to the constitution on April 11, 2019. Thus, Korean Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Korean Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Korean College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and Korean Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists organized 'special committee for abortion law' to support social discussion on the revision of the abortion law, and they prepared official opinions of obstetrics for medical issues including doctors' right to refuse abortion. In the future, the committee will continue to adapt to changes of medical environment especially after the revision of the abortion law by collecting its members' feedbacks.

To compare the serum levels of leptin and soluble leptin receptor (sOB-R) with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) girls and controls through meta-analysis. The MEDLINE via PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, and EMBASE database, from the earliest available date of indexing between January 2010 and January 2019, were searched for comparative studies evaluating serum levels of leptin and sOB-R in AIS girls. Two authors performed the data extraction independently. Any discrepancies were resolved by a consensus. Six comparative studies were identified. There was no statistically significant difference in terms of leptin between AIS girls and control [p = 0.19, WMD = -2.06 (-5.14, 1.03) ng/mL]. However, the sOB-R level was significantly higher [p 0.00001, WMD = 2.85 (1.81, 3.88) ng/mL] and the free leptin index was significantly lower [p = 0.0006, WMD = -0.12 (-0.19, -0.05)] in AIS girls than those of healthy control girls. The effect of cationic chlorides has been studied to achieve high quality perovskite films, for high performance perovskite solar cells. However, the role of cationic chloride additives which form mixed-cations on the perovskite structure is still unclear. Investigating the crystal morphology and stability of perovskite films for various sizes or concentrations of cationic chlorides is an essential part of the optoelectronic perovskite study. This paper investigates how cationic chlorides GuCl, FACl, CsCl, RbCl, and KCl, with different cationic sizes and concentrations, affected FAPbI3 perovskite. By forming mixed-cations by the addition of cationic chlorides with appropriate cation size and concentration, based on the tolerance factor, the crystallinity of the perovskite film was improved, achieving a lifetime 2.50 times longer, and a grain size 2.44 times larger. As a result, the efficiency of the perovskite solar cells is increased to 23.28%, and certified as 22.65% at Newport with optimized cationic chlorides. To understand the effect of the cation size and concentration of the cationic chlorides, theoretical analysis of the mechanism by which the cationic chlorides increased the crystallinity was performed using density functional theory calculations. The results revealed the effect of the various cationic chlorides on perovskite phase structures and matched the experimental results.

This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the sperm retrieval rate (SRR) and pregnancy rate after testicular sperm extraction in men with azoospermia and those with a history of cryptorchidism treated by orchiopexy.The SRR and clinical pregnancy rate were investigated. We performed a sub-analysis that included factors such as bilaterality, age, and idiopathic non-obstructive azoospermia (iNOA). The analysis comprised 13 studies from January 1995 to July 2021. The data sources were PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library included "cryptorchidism", "orchidopexy", "azoospermia", and "testicular sperm extraction".The overall mean SRR was 63.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 57.6%-68.6%; I²=62.4%), and the overall mean clinical pregnancy rate was 30.1% (95% CI, 22.6%-38.8%; I²=69.9%). The meta-analysis comparing the SRR, there was no significant difference between patients with a history of bilateral and unilateral orchiopexy (relative risk [RR]=1.02; 95% CI, 0.89-1.16; p=0.79). Orchiopexy performed under the age of 10 years showed significantly increased SRR compared to the age of over 10 years (RR=1.25; 95% CI, 1.06-1.47; p=0.008). Azoospermic men with a history of cryptorchidism treated by orchiopexy had significantly higher SRR than iNOA (RR=1.90; 95% CI, 1.40-2.58; p0.0001).Men with azoospermia and a history of cryptorchidism treated by orchiopexy had significantly higher SRR than those with iNOA after testicular sperm extraction. Furthermore, patients who underwent orchiopexy before the age of ten years had significantly higher SRR than patients operated at an older than the age of ten years.

In the February 25, 2021 issue of Nature, Seo et al. reported a perovskite solar cell with a certified conversion efficiency of 25.2%. We discuss how improving the carrier management with electron transfer and the perovskite layer are key for achieving high-efficiency perovskite solar cells.

Among gastrointestinal emergencies, acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding remains a challenging clinical problem owing to significant patient morbidity and costs involved in management. Endoscopic hemostatic therapy is the mainstay of treatment and decreases the incidence of re-bleeding, the need for surgery, morbidity, and mortality. However, in 8%–15% of patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding, endoscopic hemostatic therapy does not successfully control bleeding. Trans-arterial coil embolization is an effective alternative treatment for endoscopic hemostatic failure; however, this procedure can induce adverse outcomes, such as non-target vessel occlusion, vessel dissection and perforation, and coil migration. Coil migration is rare but causes severe complications, such as re-bleeding and bowel ischemia. However, in most cases, coil migration is local and involves spontaneous healing without serious complications. Here, we report the case of a patient who underwent trans-arterial coil embolization of the gastroduodenal artery with the purpose of controlling massive duodenal bleeding, resulting in a fatal outcome caused by coil migration.

Hyperprolactinemia due to a pituitary adenoma is a rare cause of erectile dysfunction (ED). The prevalence of clinically apparent prolactinomas is reported to be from 6-10 to 50 per 100,000. A few reports have been published of prolactinoma presenting with ED. Here, we report a rare case of a young man who presented with ED as a chief complaint and who was diagnosed with a huge prolactinoma, and we discuss a related fertility issue.

Summary One of the most effective methods to achieve high-performance perovskite solar cells has been to include additives that serve as dopants, crystallization agents, or passivate defect sites. Cl-based additives are among the most prevalent in literature, yet their exact role is still uncertain. In this work, we systematically study the function of methylammonium chloride (MACl) additive in formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3)-based perovskite. Using density functional theory, we provide a theoretical framework for understanding the interaction of MACl with a perovskite. We show that MACl successfully induces an intermediate to the pure FAPbI3 α-phase without annealing. The formation energy is related to the amount of incorporated MACl. By tuning the incorporation of MACl, the perovskite film quality can be significantly improved, exhibiting a 6× increase in grain size, a 3× increase in phase crystallinity, and a 4.3× increase in photoluminescence lifetime. The optimized solar cells achieved a certified efficiency of 23.48%.
